Front Range, Colorado: The majority of the rocks comprising the Front Range of Colorado are pre- Cambrian schists, gneisses, and intrusives which have been elevated to form part of the Southern Rocky Mountain physiographic province. The region is noted mainly for its production of gold and silver, but ores of tungsten, fluorspar, uranium, copper, and iron have been worked. Geological literature describes pitchblende and other radioactive minerals occurring at Jamestown, Boulder County; Central City, Gilpin County; and Lawson, Clear Creek County (fig. 1). These three adjoining counties cover most of the highly mineralized section of the Front Range which extends from James- town to Breckenridge. As far as the writer is aware, uranium has been found only in the portion north-east of Lawson.

PREVIOUSLY I have dealt with the methods of separating silver from copper. There now remains the portion which treats of solidified juices ; and whereas they might be considered as alien to things metallic, nevertheless, the reasons why they should not be separated from it I have explained in the second book. Solidified juices are either prepared from waters in which nature or art has infused them, or they are produced from the liquid juices themselves, or from stony minerals. Sagacious people, at first observing the waters of some lakes to be naturally full of juices which thickened on being dried up by the heat of the sun and thus became solidified juices, drew such waters into other places, or diverted them into low-lying places adjoining hills, so that the heat of the sun should likewise cause them to condense. Subsequently, because they observed that in this wise the solidified juices could be made only in summer, and then not in all countries, but only in hot and temperate regions in which it seldom rains in summer, they boiled them in vessels over a fire until they began to thicken. In this manner, at all times of the year, in all regions, even the coldest, solidified juices could be obtained from solutions of such juices, whether made by nature or by art. Afterward, when they saw juices drip from some roasted stones, they cooked these in pots in order to obtain solidified juices in this wise also. It is worth the trouble to learn the pro- portions and the methods by which these are made. I will therefore began with salt, which is made from water either salty by nature, or by the labour of man, or else from a solution of salt, or from lye, likewise salty. Water which is salty by nature, is condensed and converted into salt in salt-pits by the heat of the sun, or else by the heat of a fire in pans or pts or trenches. That which is made salty by art, is also condensed by fire and changed into salt. There should be as many salt-pits dug as the circumstance of the place permits, but there should not be more made than can be used, although we ought to make as much salt as we can sell. The depth of salt-pits should be moderate, and the bottom should be level, so that all the water is evaporated from the salt by the heat of the sun. The salt-pits should first be encrusted with salt, so that they may not suck up the water. The method of pouring or leading sea-water into salt-pits is very old, and is still in use in many places. The method is not less old, but less common, to pour well-water into salt-pits, as was done in Babylon, for which Pliny is the authority, and in Cappadocia, where they used not only well-water, but also spring-water. In all hot countries salt-water and lake-water are conducted, poured or carried into salt-pits, and, being dried by the heat of the sun, are converted into

QUESTIONS of assaying were explained in the last Book, and I have now come to a greater task, that is, to the description of how we extract the metals. First of all I will explain the method of preparing the ore1 ; for since Nature usually creates metals in an impure state, mixed with earth, stones, and solidified juices, it is necessary to separate most of these impurities from the ores as far as can be, before they are smelted, and therefore I will now describe the methods by which the ores are sorted, broken with hammers, burnt, crushed with stamps, ground into powder, sifted, washed, roasted, and calcineda.

SIZING is the process of separating mixed particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles range between certain definite maximum and minimum sizes. In coal preparation, sizing is generally accomplished by passing the coal over screens. Separation by differential settling in air or water currents has been adapted to the special field of separating very fine sizes, and these processes are in commercial use to a relatively small extent in the coal industry. Separation with screens is a very old industrial practice. Agricola described the use of screens for ore treatment in the middle ages. In the literature of the British coal industry references were made to the screening of coal as early as 1589, but the practice of extensive sizing for the market did not become general until the last half of the nineteenth century. In America, the practice of sizing developed first in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, beginning with the use of rakes in the mine working places to recover coarse coal. This mining procedure left the fines in the mine. Preparation outside the mine started with the installation of stationary cast-iron plates with 4 to 6-in. square holes. The run-of-mine coal was dumped upon the platforms, the large pieces of rock were picked out by hand, and the large lumps of coal were broken with hammers. The term "breaker," which still applies to the anthracite-preparation plant, originated with this practice, but the term is no longer descriptive of the entire function of the plant. In 1884, the first power-operated anthracite coal breaker was erected by Gideon Bart at his colliery at Wolf Creek near Minersville, Pa. This plant utilized a system of rolls for breaking the coal and revolving screens for sizing. The plant was driven by a steam engine. It could handle coal at the rate of 200 tons a day. By 1860, revolving screens were in wide use in the Pennsylvania anthracite field. Shaking screens were introduced in the Pennsylvania anthracite region in the 90's and they rapidly displaced the lower-capacity revolving screens.

D. T. ROGERS*—The conclusions drawn in this paper have important practical significance to the steelmaker and the metallurgist if, in practice, it is demonstrated that metallic copper in the charge will pick up sulphur from the furnace atmosphere and thus increase the sulphur content of the bath. The problem of residual copper arising out of increasing copper in the scrap available to the industry is, in itself, a matter of concern to the steel maker. If, in addition to the often detrimental effects of high residual copper upon the physical properties of some important steel grades, there is to be a complication of the sulphur problem, then we have a set of conditions that bodes no good for the open hearth melter and the open hearth metallurgist. "IntroductionThe Yellowknife greenstone belt lies along the west side of Yellowknife bay on the north shore of Great Slave lake, some 600 miles north of Edmonton, Alberta. The producing gold mines along the belt include the Con-Rycon and Negus which came into production in 1938 and 1939, and the Giant Yellowknife, which followed in 1948. In addition to these, the Akaitcho and Crestaurum mines are potential producers and there are several promising prospects.Early geological work along the belt was done by A. W. Jolliffe who first recognized a number of great faults, the largest of which is the West Bay fault with a horizontal movement of more than 3 miles. In 1943, A. S. Dadson, following an examination of the Giant-Yellowknife property, advanced the hypothesis that Baker Creek valley was underlain by a series of major gold-bearing shear zones. Subsequent diamond drilling in 1944 bore out the correctness of this view and outlined the great ore-bearing shear zones that are now being developed and mined by Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines. Near the south boundary of the Giant property, the shear zones are cut off by the West Bay fault. This prompted Neil Campbell, District Geologist for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, to make a detailed study of the geology along the West Bay fault in the hope of finding the faulted extension of the Giant shear-zone system on the west side of this fault. In this he was entirely successful. By careful geological mapping he matched several faulted diabase dykes on both sides of the fault and, knowing their dip, determined the horizontal and vertical components of movement along the fault. Subsequent •diamond drilling based on Campbell's work located the presumed correlative of the Giant shear-zone system on the Con-Rycon and Negus properties, where it has been named the Campbell zone or system. At the present time, all production at the Negus Mines property is coming from orebodies along the Campbell zone."

Introduction I Appreciate very much the opportunity of discussing with you tonight oil developments in western Canada. These developments are of importance to all of us, first because of their great economic significance to all of Canada, and second because of the location of the new oilfields. Situated as they are in the west and northwest, they are of considerable strategic value from the standpoint of continental defence. The story of oil development in Canada covers a span of almost a century, during which time success in finding reserves of petroleum was barely sufficient to maintain interest in continuing the search. Finally, in 1947, a well of the first importance was completed in Alberta and, judging by discoveries made since then, it appears that Canada, at long last, is to become an important producer of petroleum.

The tide of increasing demand for metals turned during early 1949, with resultant lower prices. The production of the principal metals was less than in 1948. The problem of high unit costs, however, was held over from 1948. With the lower prices for metals, greater efforts are being made to reduce operating costs. The labor supply was adequate during the latter half of the year in most districts. The force has been reduced at most mines; some mines were idle during part of the year because of strikes, and others ceased operations on their own account. In the main, labor efficiency increased during the year in underground metal mines. Efforts are being made generally to improve labor relations. Green men hired in the time of the scarcity of skilled miners are becoming better trained. The supervisory personnel of most mines is cost conscious, and the planning of operations has been improved. Overhead costs are being scrutinized. The trend toward mechanization underground continued strong. Mining technology rapidly is becoming a problem of handling materials. Surface miners, underground miners and miners of metals, nonmetallics, and coal can learn much Gardner from each other. A mine, however, may become overmechanized. The capital charges against new equipment may exceed the saving in labor costs where sufficient daily tonnage is not handled.

When lime and magnesia are used as fluxes in the smelting of titaniferous ores fluid, digestible slags low in iron oxide and high in titanium dioxide are produced. The mineral phases present in such slags are (Fe,Mg)O.ZTiOp, CaTiO3, and minor amounts of silicate glass (or its devitrification products). The flux additions are added to the ore in relative amounts to crystallize a ratio of (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 to CaTiO, of near the eutectic proportions of 60 pct (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 and 40 pct CaTiOl. FeO.TiOz (ilmenite) remains present in the slag until the FeO content is reduced to approximately 8 pct. Optimum slag composition is obtained by reducing the FeO content to between 2 and 6 pct. Continued reduction shifts the (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 to oxygen deficient structures classified as MgTi306 and MgTi2O.. Further reduction yields titanium oxycarbides and freezes the melts. The(Fe,Mg)0.2TiO2 structure shows a complete isomorphous replacement of iron by magnesium. It also forms a solid solution compound with as high as 12 mols of TiO2 under reducing conditions without the occurrence of rutile or reduced titanium oxides in the slag.

Mother Earth has had a long life extending over two billion years, during which time she has changed from a mass of incandescent gases to her present form, exhibiting a density stratification from the extremely tenuous gases of the stratosphere to the heavy central nickeliron core. Man is now mining all the principal divisions of Mother Earth except the centrosphere. Nitrogen, oxygen, neon, and other rarer gases are being recovered from the air; magnesium, bromium, potash, borates, and other salts from lakes and seas; brines, medicinal mineral waters, and great quantities of water for domestic and industrial uses from surface and subsurface reservoirs; and, from the rocky crust, many minerals and fuels for our present industrial civilization as well as plants and animals for food and shelter. Productivity of soil is influenced both positively and negatively by man. There is some cause to bewail what may be considered a wasteful influence of men on soil. The general situation is bad in spots but not hopeless. The passing of large areas of fertile land in some areas is merely to be noted and not to be mourned. These lands could not have been used without decrease in their fertility. The productivity factor is affected by human activities. Many soils in the eastern and southern states are far richer and more productive now than they were at any previous time. Arctic soils are not productive

Three companies, United States Potash Company, Potash Company of America, and International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, are now operating potash mines and reGneries in the Carlsbad, New Mexico, area. The three mines are located approximately twenty miles east of Car1sbad. The deposits have been found ideal for mechanized mining methods. This summary has been compiled from information made available by the three operating companies. Prospecting Since outcrops of potash are nonexistent, prospecting is accomplished by drilling and coring of the salt section to establish the grade, thickness, and outline of the potash beds contained in the salt deposits. Information regarding the nature of the formations in the cover of 400 to 600 ft thick over the salt and potash beds is also obtained from drill cuttings in the same operation. By proper interpretation of assembled data the best location for shafts may be determined. The overburden varies in character but consists in general of interbedded shales, sand, gravels, limestones, and anhydrite beds. Water, in unpleasant quantities, especially in the sands and limestones, often completes the geologic section. Some of the shaftas in the area have been sunk without undue difficulties, others have been delayed by flows of water. Most of the shafts are concreted from the surface to the salt section. Each of the three mines in the Carlsbad area has one shaft for hoisting ore and one for hoisting men and supplies. Mining Methods Information acquired from initial drilling and prospecting affected the choice of mining methods. Since the tabular, slightly rolling deposits were similar to coal seams, the room-and-pillar system used in coal mining was adopted by all the companies. Pillars have not been removed in any of the mines on a large scale. One company has conducted experimental robbing of pillars in one restricted area. Where it is known that overlying strata contain water in large amounts, it is not considered practical to risk flooding of the mines by removing pillars without fill. Some thought is now being directed toward development of economical methods of filling for pillar recovery. The problem is not identical at the three mines and local conditions will govern the methods employed for eventual pillar recovery. The important point is that, with large reserves, it has not been necessary to resort to mining of pillars for adequate production. The ore deposits are laterally extensive but are irregular in shape and lie at a depth of 700 to 1100 ft below the surface. The major operations of all mines are on the same bed strati-graphically, except for the langbeinite level at International Minerals and Chemical Corporation. The deposits are apparently not connected and in many parts of the deposits being mined, "salt horses" or barren zones occur. From 400 to 700 ft of salt with minor beds of polyhalite and anhydrite lie immediately above the ore horizon. The ore differs from the salt only in the potassium chloride content and color due to small amounts of iron associated with the sylvite, giving the ore a somewhat mottled red and white cast. Thickness of the ore varies from 5 to 14 ft. Rooms and break-throughs in the mines vary from 24 to 40 ft in width, the overlying salt forming an excellent roof and providing safe mining conditions. Almost no timber is used in any of the mines for roof support. Drilling is normally the first step in mining the face of a room. Electric motor driven auger drills are used in the area. Jack hammers were used to some extent when the mines were first opened but the ore is easily drilled if bits are sharp and the coal type

Dahl and Pawlek1 found that electrolytic copper develops extremely coarse grains at 1000°C after about 90 pct reduction by rolling. This coarsening occurs only under conditions of penultimate grain size, deformation, and alloying which lead to the "cube" recrystallization texture.l,2,3,5 The peculiar angular shapes and straight grain boundaries of the coarse grains were noted by several investigator.1,4,5 On the other hand, coarsening in Fe-containing aluminum or in AI-Mn alloys8 does not depend on a "cube" (or any well developed) recrystallization texture. It is true that increasing deformation by rolling, and, therefore, an increasingly well developed re-crystallization texture, are associated with decreasing incubation periods of coarsening.6-7-8 Nevertheless, coarsening readily develops in aluminum even after only 30 pct reduction by rolling, where the recrystallization texture is very weak.6,8 Also, coarsening was observed by Jeffries9 many years ago in sintered thoriated tungsten, which presumably has no preferred orientation. In all these cases coarsening is associated with grain growth inhibition by a dispersed second phase.8,9 The annealing temperature has to be suficiently high to overcome the inhibition at a few locations. But if it is too high, growth starts at many points, and the resulting grain size becomes much smaller.9 Normally, the coarse grains are more or less equiaxed, and the boundaries have a typical ragged appearance.6.8 Cook and Macquarie4 demonstrated that, in addition to the texture-dependent coarsening previously found at 1000°C,l electrolytic tough pitch copper may also coarsen at 800°C after 50 pct reduction by cross rolling. The coarse grains formed under such conditions have rounded shapes and ragged boundaries, like those in aluminum. When the annealing temperature is higher, the tendency for their formation decreases. All these observations suggest that the coarsening at 800°C is associated with inhibition by a second phase. Actually, coarsening at 800°C after 50 pct reduction by cross rolling was observed only in tough pitch copper,4 which contains Cu2O particles. On the other hand, the texture-dependent 1000°C coarsening occurs in both tough pitch and oxygen-free copper;4 it does not appear to depend on the presence of a dispersed second phase. However, the interpretation of the 800°C coarsening in Cu after 50 pct rolling as an inhibition-dependent process, similar to the coarsening in A1-Mn alloys, is somewhat weakened by the fact that this coarsening was reported4 to occur only after cross rolling, and not after straight rolling. It was, therefore, decided to re-examine this question. A 1 in. diam electrolytic tough pitch copper rod, No. 2 hard drawn, was annealed for 20 min at 700°C, rolled to 0.5 in., annealed 10 min at 700°C, and straight rolled to 0.064 in. It was then given a penultimate anneal of 20 min at 500°C and it was cut into four sections, which were given final reductions by straight rolling as follows: A 30 pct reduction of area B 50 pct reduction of area C 70 pct reduction of area D 90 pct reduction of area Specimens cut from the four sections were finally annealed at 800°C in an oxidizing atmosphere. Strip A remained fine grained up to 10 hr, but the specimen annealed 12 hr consisted of only 2 large grains. Strip B had a few scattered large (1/2 to 3/4 mm) grains after 1 min, although the balance of the specimen consisted of fine grains of about 0.02 mm. After 5 min there were several 10 to 15 mm grains present, and after 1 hr strip B was completely coarsened. The coarse grains had the same characteristics (see Fig 1) as those obtained by Cook and Macquarie at 800°C after cross rolling. Strip C had several grains of 0.05 to 1 mm after 1 min, but it was still largely fine grained after 12 hr. After 48 hr it consisted entirely of grains of about 0.5 to 4 mm, with an extraordinarily large number of twin bands. Strip D remained com- pletely fine grained after 4 hr at 800°C. These results indicate that, in the deformation range of 30 to 70 pct reduction, the incubation period for coarsening as well as the rate of growth and the final size of the coarse grains decreases with increasing deformation. The purpose of this note is to call attention to a source of difficulty which can be responsible for inaccurate estimates of wetting liquid pressure gradients in mixture flow experiments of the Hassler1 type. It has been our experience occasionally to observe what were indicated to be negative pressure gradients, and these were regarded as anomalous in the sense that physically they seemed to contradict the requirement that the flux be in the direction of the potential field. At first it was thought that our scheme of assembling barriers and core sample led to such asymmetry in the distribution of isobars that the manometric leads at each end of the core were responding to internal pressures (within the core sample) which could be either positive or negative with respect to each other, and which in fact might tend to reflect on different effective core lengths in an unpredictable fashion as the wetting liquid saturation was changed. However, no compelling evidence of this possibility has been established. In addition, we were cognizant of the requirements to be satisfied in selecting manometric instrumentation to minimize the delay in response of the manometer to the differential pressures being measured, and were thus assured that our observations of anomalous pressure gradients could not be explained by faulty instrumentation. What we suggest is that if a leak sink occurs in the fluid lines connecting the core to either side of the differential manometer, errors exceeding 100 per cent may result in the estimation of wetting liquid pressure gradient, even though the leak is of such small magnitude that its existence would tend to be obscured by evaporation effects. This is because in a system with leaks at the specified places, the manometer rec- ords at steady state the pressure drop across the manometer barrier elements in addition to the pressure drop across the core sample. This possibility will be illustrated below analytically and by numerical example for the special case where the leak occurs on the high presure side of the core, since we are especially desirous to explain the significance of our observations of the so-called negative pressure gradients. It will be indicated, however, that leak sinks on the low pressure side of the core can account for observations of anomalously high values of pressure gradient, and that multiple leaks on both sides of the core can provide for some compensation so that the errors in pressure estimation are reduced. However, the major point to be emphasized is the fact that the impractical-ity of detecting the small leak sinks which give rise to the difficulties makes it a complicated task for the experimenter in a particular case to know with certainty that his estimation of pressure gradient lies within the limits of error which can be tolerated. Fig. 1 shows the electrical analog of the flow system we have employed in our studies. The inflow and outflow barriers. Rbl and Rb2, the manometer barriers, Rm1, and Rm2, and the core sample, Rc— for a particular fluid saturation and distribution— are all designated as resistance elements; the flowmeter is designated by an ammeter, A; the pressure source is designated by E; and the manometric device is designated by the voltmeter, V. Included in the circuit are the variable resistances, Rx and Ry, which may be regarded as the leak sinks, and which, in general, can vary in magnitude from zero (i.e., a large hole or shunt in the system) to infinity (i.e., no

During the drilling campaign conducted between October, 1942; and May, 1943, to prove the extent of the scheelite deposit worked by King Island Scheelite N.L. at Grassy, King Island, Tasmania, 35 holes were drilled and 606 samples recovered and assayed for their content. Of these, 238 came from outside the limits of the orebody and were for the most part barren, although a few contained some scheelite. The present statistical analysis is made only of the 368 samples taken from diamond-drill cores of the orebody itself.Drilling Pattern and Sampling MethodsFrom the purely statistical viewpoint, it is realised that methods employed in selecting sites for diamong.-drilling, and of collecting samples from drill cores, do not give a completely unbiassed set of data for analysis. Fig. 1 is a sketch plan showing the relativepositions of the drillholes, which were inclined at an angle of depression of 50 deg. The pattern does not conform to a properly randomized and' regularly-spaced grid, the positions of the later holes being determined by the results obtained from previous holes.Statistically, the bias is, therefore, favourable. The unequal spacing of the drill holes and the lack of uniformity in direction of the lines along which the holes were drilled are unsatisfactory from the mathematical viewpoint; but it is realised that these irregularitiesare difficult to avoid in determining by the most economical methods the extent of such an orebody, and are dictated by geological rather than mathematical necessity.Sampling, also, is lacking in complete uniformity. Each sample is approximately 10ft. in length. However, owing to the fact that 100% recovery of core is rarely achieved, and actual lengths of samples taken are ,primarily governed by the length of the drill runs,and secondarily by lithological changes, there is a considerable amount of variation in the sample length.AssayingWith the exception of 28 samples from three drill holes all samples dealt with in this paper were assayed in the Melbourne University Ore-Dressing Laboratory of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. These assays were given to the nearest 0.05% WOg as it was considered that more accurate determination was not possible. This fact has been taken into consideration in the frequency analysis below. The 28 assays determined by the Tasmanian Mines Department were given to the nearest 0.01%.

The Conda phosphate mine, eight miles north of Soda Springs in Caribou County, Idaho, was opened up by the Anaconda Copper Mining CO. in 1920. Except for brief periods, during the 20's and early 30's, the mine has maintained a continuous production, and 2,100,000 short tons of phosphate rock have been shipped to the company's phosphate fertilizer manufacturing plant at Anaconda, Mont., or to independent processing plants on the Pacific Coast; a small tonnage of the rock has been shipped to the Hawaiian Islands. The Phosphoria formation on the Conda property consists of two, commercial-grade phosphate beds separated by 147 ft of black to brownish colored phosphatic calcareous shales interbedded with softer mudstones, clays, and occasional narrow seams of oolitic phosphate. The main lower phosphate bed in the series averaging 7.1 ft in thickness, is called the "foot-wall bed," which lies coriformably on the Wells limestone formation, the 1atter often containing irregular bands of chert. The upper or " hanging-wall bed" of phosphate rock averaging 7.2 ft in thickness, is overlaid by thick quartzite beds, locally called the " Rex chert" member in the upper portion of the Phosphoria formation. (Fig 1.) There are two anticlines on the property with axis striking approximately parallel to the mountain range beneath which extensive development on phosphate rock has been conducted in the past, and is now in progress. The phosphate beds have been eroded to a large extent from the tops of these anticlines, leaving at least three well-pronounced outcrops of the phosphate beds exposed within the boundaries of the Anaconda Copper Mining Cornpany's properties. At present, mining operations in the Conda No. 3 mine are confined to the two phosphate beds along the east flank of the easternmost anticline, where the dips on the beds vary from 50° to 60° east, thereby affording favorable conditions for the sublevel mining system now in use. Mining operations formerly were confined to the footwall or lower oolitic phosphate bed because of its higher phosphate and vanadium contents (32 pct P²O5 and 0.29 pct V2 O 5); this bed averages 7.1 ft in thickness. The oolitic portions of the upper bed were of satisfactory grade, but the shale and clay partings (Fig 2) diluted the mined rock and could not he separated economically by selective mining or by sorting. Experiments in beneficiating this rock were carried on for a number of years. Recently, a simple washing process was adopted, which gave a satisfactory grade of concentrates and a high recovery of P² O5. In 1947 it was decided to expand Anaconda's production of treble superphosphate and phosphoric acid by approximately 90 pct. This rock will be obtained from the footwall and hanging-wall beds, and the rock from the hanging-wall bed will be benefici-ated at -Anaconda.l In order to take advantage of the previous development on the 500 secondary haulage level, short crosscuts will be driven at approximately 950 ft intervals from the existing lateral drifts through the hanging-wall shale beds. From the inner end of each crosscut, short lateral drifts will he driven in both directions, so that four working raises can he put up on the dip of the phosphate bed at proper intervals along each of the lateral drifts. Jasper County lies just north of the geographical center of Georgia, bounded on the west and north by the Ocmulgee River. The county seat, Monticello, is approximately 65 miles east-southeast of Atlanta and 40 miles north of Macon. It is served by the Macon-Athens branch of the Central of Georgia Railway Co. and by five paved highways converging from adjoining county seats. Farming and lumbering are the principal local occupations. About half the county is covered with pine and mixed hardwoods; a large part of the forested land is owned by the Soil Conservation Service of the Department of Agriculture in its Piedmont Land Utilization Project. The topography is one of gently rolling field and forest with occasional hills rising 100 ft or more above the creek beds. Though annual rainfall is in the neighborhood of 60 in., most of it falls in torrential downpours of short duration which tend rapidly to erode the red soil and convert the country roads to greasy tracks of red mud. History The pegmatites of Jasper County produced a small amount of mica in World War I. In World War 11, our Government's search for this strategic mineral brought to Georgia B. C. Burgess, then Southern Manager of Colonial Mica Corp., subdivision of Metals Reserve Corp., who noted on State Highway 83 the presence of pegmatitic material used as road metal. In 1944, after severing his Government connection and returning to private practice, Mr. Burgess investigated the source of the pegmatitic material noted on his previous visit and discovered that graphic granite pegmatite had been mined for the road metal. He secured mineral leases from the Soil Conservation Service and from private owners and began preliminary development work. By 1946 he had uncovered enough pegmatite to warrant an enterprise to undertake economic development of the feldspar. In March 1947, he conveyed his leases and interest to Appalachian Minerals Co., remaining with it as Vice President and General Manager. This company has carried on additional development, removing overburden by bulldozer and drilling the pegmatites uncovered. A modern and efficient feldspar grinding plant to produce 20 mesh feldspar for the glass industry was completed and placed in operation May 1, 1948. This is the second review of developments in coal mining engineering (see C.I.M .M. Transactions, Vol. LI, 1948, pp. 262- 264) and covers the period from October, 1948, to January, 1950. Mechanization The period under review was characterized by the intensive development of appliances providing for complete mechanization of coal-face operations. A variety of machines are being evolved or have already been placed on the market which embody the principle of 'continuous mining'. This trend can be observed in all coal producing countries. In the United States, two continuous mining machines have been developed for entry and room application and by the end of 1 949 were being used in a number of mines. These are the Joy Continuous Miner in which the coal is ripped from the face by means of multiple cutter chains, and the Jeffrey Colmol employing cutters on rotating arms for chipping the coal from the face. The Joy machine is made in tw6l models, 34-in. and 48-in. high and designed for a range of seam thicknesses from 3-ft. -t-in. to 4-ft. 6-in. and from 4-ft. 6-in. to 8ft., respectively. Some experience has been gained with this machine and accounts of its performance are already appearing in the technical literature. The Jeffrey-Colmol has a more limited range of working height. The first model, 38-in. high, was designed for seams about 4 feet in thick11ess but more recently the 28-in. low model has been placed on the market for seams 2-ft. 6-in, to 3-ft. 4-in. in thickness. Conventional mobile loading machines of the gathering-arm type are continuing to yield high production under suitable conditions, and improvements or modifications of the basic principle are embodied in new machines as, for example, the Jeffrey mobile (conveyor) loader with extensible (gathering-arm) head developed for conveyor mining.

IN the last book I have explained the methods of delimiting- the meers along each kind of vein, and the duties of mine officials. In this book1 I will in like manner explain the principles of underground mining and the art of surveying. First then, I will proceed to deal with those matters which pertain to the former heading, since both the subject and methodical arrangement require it. And so I will describe first of all the digging of shafts, tunnels, and drifts on venae profundae; next I will discuss the good indications shown by canales2, by the materials which are dug out, and by the rocks ; then I will speak of the tools by which veins and rocks are broken down and excavated ; the method by which fire shatters the hard veins ; and further, of the machines with which water is drawn from the shafts and air is forced into deep shafts and long tunnels, for digging is impeded by the inrush of the former or the failure of the latter ; next I will deal with the two kinds of shafts, and with the making of them and of tunnels ; and finally, I will describe the method of mining venae dilatatae, venae cumulatae, and stringers.

"IntroductionThe history of iron ore production in the United States has followed a pattern not far different from that set in the production of non-ferrous ores; the first interest of the prospector and miner being the discovery and development of high-grade ores. In the early stages of development of most mining districts, high-cost low-grade ores are usually of slight interest due to the additional capital investment required in concentrating plants, as well as the increased requirements of •power and other facilities. As the reserves of higher grade ores are depleted and the technical knowledge of ore beneficiation is broadened, production of concentrates from the lower grade ores is stimulated.The real stimulus necessary to arouse serious consideration of beneficiated iron ore in the Lake Superior district has been provided by the serious inroads made in the high-grade ore reserves by two World Wars.The first shipment of high-grade iron ore from the Mesabi range in Minnesota was recorded in 1892, and the first token shipment of concentrates was made 15 years later, in 1907. Not until 1910 did the production of concentrates assume any great importance. A steady increase in concentrate production over the years is shown by the fact that, in 1910, concentrates accounted for 8 per cent of the total shipments from the State, whereas by the time of World War II this percentage had increased to 22 per cent and by 1948 had risen to 26 per cent. It seems a safe assumption that the shipment of concentrated iron ore, from the Mesabi range in particular, will continue to increase even more rapidly from now on, with other iron ranges of the Lake Superior district following this lead."

The Zebulon manganese deposit has been known for a number of years. It is situated about 3 miles east of Zebulon, Wake County, N. C., on the Avon, Privett property (fig. 1). The deposit outcrops as a vein, or dike averaging-16 to 20 feet in width. Drilling by the Bureau of Mines has shown that this outcrop results from consolidation of a number of small stringers near the surface. The surface width and the Percentage of manganese oxides (resulting from. weathering) diminish with depth. Below 50 to 80 feet, the vein material is mainly quartz and spessartite garnet. The deposit was first examined by W. T. Benson, a Bureau of Mines engineer, in 1941. The Bureau conducted a diamond-drilling exploratory program an the property from November 7, 1944, to January 25, 1945. A. total of 2,508.5 feet was drilled in 14 holes along the strike of the deposit.
