A spectrochemical procedure applicable to the determination of iron, manganese, and magnesium in titanium metal and to the determination of alloying constituents in three types of titanium alloys is presented. Acid solutions of samples and standards are excited with a spark-type discharge and porous-cup electrode arrangement. The method is particularly applicable for analyzing samples for which a self-electrode method cannot be used. Calibrations are accomplished with synthetic standard solutions, resulting in a primary method that makes calibrations based upon results of other analytical methods unnecessary. Replicate determinations are reproduced to within 5 percent, and the average percentage deviations from reliable chemical values are less than 6 percent. The method can be extended readily to determine additional elements that are similarly soluble and have similar spectral sensitivities. It also can be used as a starting point to establish standards for a direct sparking procedure for analyzing titanium alloys. In view of the absence of established reliable analytical methods in the titanium industry, the spectrochemical method described here should prove to be a timely contribution.

The clue history of performance of a highly volatile type oil reservoir which is now greater than 80 per cent depleted is presented. The reservoir is at a depth of approximately 8,200 ft and includes an area greater than 7,500 acres. The reservoir has been exploited by 10 wells which to date have yielded about 10,880,000 bbl of stock tank oil by pressure depletion. Reservoir pressure has declined from an original of 5,000 psi to approximately 1,450 psi. Produced gas/oil ratio has increased from 3,200 to 23,000 cu ft/bbl with a corresponriing increase in APl gravity of the stock tank oil from 440 to 620 . Pressure and fluid data are given for different stages of depletion. INTRODUCTION In papers by Sloan,' and Cook, Spencer and Bo-browski,' properties of highly volatile type reservoir oil were discussed in detail and methods were presented for predicting performance of reservoirs containing this type of fluid. The purpose of this paper is to present performance history of a highly volatile type oil reservoir designated as Reservoir A which has been produced by pressure depletion and field separation without processing of gas GEOLOGY The reterence field which includes Reservoir A is a structural feature north of a trend of major folding along a northeast-southwest axis. In the area of development, the structure has the appearance of a dome with formation dip of three to four degrees, but structural relations between the reference field and the axis of major folding to the south have not been determined. No faulting within the field is evident. Oil and gas productive sands have been found at depths of 7,000 ft to 10,000 ft in a columnar section of Mio-Oligocene age. The sand bodies in the section are lenticular and usually continuity of sand is limited to a small area. Sand A which forms Reservoir A at a depth of 8,200 ft, however, has exceptional continuous development in the reference field. Fig. 1 shows an isopachous map of net oil sand for Reservoir A. Net thickness of oil sand at producing wells ranges from 14 to 34 ft with an average of 22 ft. Pinch-out of sand has been shown by drilling in the southwest part of the field, but extent of the reservoir on the northwest and northeast parts of the field is indicated only by thinning of the sand. The vertical oil column between the highest and lowest producing well in the reservoir is 339 ft. No water-oil contact has been found within the reservoir. As interpreted from the isopachous map, the reservoir includes about 8,900 acres with an average net sand thickness of 12 ft. Because of limited data on extent of the reservoir, the isopachous map permits only an approximation of sand volume in the reservoir. DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION Reservoir A was discovered during 1938 and was developed with eight wells to the end of 1942. One well was completed during 1946 and the tenth well in the reservoir was completed during 1951. Three of the original wells and the last completion have produced from Sand A only. Six wells have produced from Sand A through the casing side of dual completions. Initial producing rates of the original wells ranged from 800 to 1,000 BOPD. Production history for the reservoir is shown in Fig. 2. Production of the reservoir was begun during 1940 and in May, 1952, peak production from seven wells was 5,300 BOPD. At the end of March, 1954. cumulative production was 10.880,000

The galvanic corrosion properties of titanium and zirconium were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The dissimilar metals involved in these experiments included magnesium, magnesium alloy FS1, aluminum alloys, zinc, steel, tin, lead, copper, Monel, nickel, and several stainless steels. Couples were immersed in synthetic ocean water, tap water, 5-percent ammonium sulfate solution, 5-1/2-percent sodium chloride solution, sodium hydroxide solution, 0.1 N hydrochloric acid, and various concentrations of sulfuric acid.

IN 1947 a large low grade deposit of uranium was located in the northwest corner of Saskatchewan, in the Beaverlodge property of Eldorado Mining & Refining Ltd. Most of the values occur as thin seams and as coatings on other minerals, and the ore, which is light and friable, is not amenable to the usual gravity methods of concentration. The acid leaching process developed to retreat the company's Port Radium tailings was also impractical, as the percentage of carbonates is high and the percentage of sulphides relatively low. Construction of the mill building and installation of equipment, both scheduled for 1952, awaited selection of a satisfactory ore dressing process on or before Oct. 1, 1951. An extensive research program on dressing of ores from the Ace mine therefore was undertaken by the Mines Branch in Ottawa, a research team at the University of British Columbia, and an ore dressing group at the company's Port Hope refinery. Pilot plant operations were conducted at the Ottawa plant of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. under the general direction of C. S. Parsons, consultant on metallurgy and ore dressing for Eldorado. In mid-September, having compared results of the several research programs, Dr. Parsons recommended a process employing a carbonate or basic leach. He reported that, while the chemistry of the process had been proved, engineering of the flowsheet was incomplete, and he suggested that under normal conditions further pilot plant work at the Ace mine might be profitable. However, since this would involve a delay of 12 to 18 months in bringing the property into operation, he recommended that design of the concentrator proceed immediately. Concentrator capacity was determined by two considerations: 1) the amount of ore then available and 2) the expectation that continued improvements would be made in the ore dressing process as a result of the intensive research being carried out by the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. The total crude fluorspar reserves in Western Europe, including the USSR and the Soviet sphere, Thetotalare estimated to exceed 17 million metric tons. The total fluorspar production in 1951 in Western Europe, excluding the USSR and Soviet sphere, amounted to 371,109 metric tons. The chief fluorspar-producing countries in Europe, excluding Russia and the Soviet sphere, are France, Western Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. TOTAL crude fluorspar reserves in western Europe, containing more than 35 pct CaF2, are estimated at 12 million metric tons, while reserves in the USSR and Soviet sphere may exceed 5 million metric tons. The bulk of these reserves are concentrated in the USSR, Spain, United Kingdom, Western Germany, and Italy. Since published estimates of the tonnages of individual mines and explored deposits are not available for most countries in Europe, the estimates given in Table I for individual countries are necessarily approximate, as they have been compiled from various sources and modified and combined according to the author's judgment. The majority of fluorspar deposits in Europe belong to the late Paleozoic metallogenetic epochs and have been found within or along the borders of the Hercynian massifs. Deposits in the Central and Esterel massifs of France, those of Western and Eastern Germany, Sardinia, the Catalonian coastal range and the Sierra de los Santos in Spain, and those of Devonshire and Cornwall belong to the Hercynian metallogenetic epochs. The deposits in southern Norway and Sweden belong to the middle Paleozoic or later, those of northern England to the late Paleozoic or later, those of northern Spain and Greece to the late Mesozoic, and those of northern and probably central Italy and Switzerland to the early Tertiary. Fluorspar occurs typically in veins, lenses, and stringers, but also in bedded replacement deposits and pockets, and may be colorless to white, yellow, green, pink, brown, blue, or purple to almost black. Except for the colorless variety, the only kind which can be used for the optical industry, the color of the fluorspar does not affect its ultimate use. Crystalline cubic or octahedral fluorite of CaF2 composition, with 48.9 pct fluorine and 51.1 pct calcium, has a specific gravity of 3.18. The ore in place, however, usually averages 3.0 metric tons per cubic meter owing to the quantity of other minerals asso- ciated with the fluorspar in the veins and the physical state of the fluorspar, which may vary from sugary to massive crystalline or microscopic inter-growths with barite or quartz. Barite of 4.5 sp gr, quartz of 2.66 sp gr, and chert and calcite are commonly associated with fluorspar. Other minerals usually present in lesser amounts are celestite, wad, silver, lead, zinc, copper, iron, and uranium minerals. In some cavity fillings the rhythmic deposition of the fluorspar, barite, and quartz into successive crusts may make it possible to handpick the crude ore on belts or to separate the fluorspar from other minerals while the actual mining is carried on. Where metallurgical grade lump spar is required for foundries, separation of quartz and barite may be made also by jigs and heavy media, and in some mines the lead and zinc sulphides may be separated and recovered by vibrating tables. However, except in the case of unusually high grade deposits, acid grade fluorspar is obtained by flotation. By this process fluorspar deposits grading down to 35 pct CaF2 in the crude ore can be worked at a profit when fluorspar, lead, zinc, and silver prices are high, as the sulphides of these ores can be separated from the fluorspar by flotation and concentrated.

If a dense fluid such as mud or water is used for circulation, the formation drilled is influenced by a hydrostatic pressure. This pressure depends on hole depth arid drilling fluid density. Laboratory tests indicute that drilling rates in many forri~ations are decreased with increased pressure,—in some cases as much as 90 per cent. A comparison between laboratory and field tests indicates that drilling fluid head affects drilling rates in the field approximately the, same as in the laboratory. Drillirrg rates of many formations are increased by reducing drilling fluid head. INTRODUCTION For many years it has been noted that field and laboratory drilling rate tests did not agree even when the formations tested were the same. For instance, tests of some shales by the Hughes Tool Co. laboratory indicated drilling rates approximately 20 to 30 ft/hour, whereas in the ground this shale would drill only 3 to 5 ft/hour. A possible reason for this discrepancy is the effect of the high pressure which the drilling fluid exerts against the formation at the bottom of the hole. Consider a small element of rock (Fig. II that is to be removed by a rock bit. If the hole is filled with mud or water. the upper surface of the rock element is subjected to a pressure which depends on hole depth and fluid density. The mass of earth around this rock element presses against the circumferential surface and the lower surface. Because of the probability of shearing stresses between the rock element and the surrounding rock, this element is not under true hydrostatic stress. However, as a first approximation for test purposes the rock element was assumed to he under hydrostatic stress. The effect of hydrostatic pressure on some physical properties of rock has been studied.1,2,3 These tests show that the "differential" compres-sive stress:': necessary to cause rup- ture in rock cylinders is greater when tested under high hydrostatic pressure than when tested under atmospheric conditions. These tests were made with pressures greater than 20,000 psi which is in excess of those normally encountered in oil well drilling. Similar tests were made by the Bureau of Reclamation' using pressures equivalent to those encountered in oil well drilling. Again the "differential" compressive stress necessary to produce failure increased with increasing hydrostatic pressure. These tests indicated that drilling rates would probably decrease. Correlation between these tests and drilling tests was not practical. The purpose of this work is to study the effect of mud column pressure on drilling rate, assuming that the material drilled is in a state of hydrostatic strcss. This problem was initially investigated in the laboratory using variable bit loads and confining pressure;. Confirmation of laboratory results was obtained in the field from a series of carefully controlled drilling tests. Because of the necessity of testing many different types of formations. only results from representative formations will be presented here.

This paper is one of a series on mining methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. It describes briefly mining practices at the Sunrise iron mine of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp., Platte County, Wyo. The Sunrise mine is in the Hartville iron district in east-central Wyoming (fig. 1). The district covers part of the Hartville Mountains, a region of moderate relief in which erosional features have been formed by the dissection of a low plateau. Altitudes vary from 4,300 feet along the North Platte River to 6,000 feet in the uplift. The climate is semiarid, with hot summers and winter temperatures below zero for short periods. Grasses, cacti, yucca, and low desert shrubs grow at lower elevations. Cottonwood and boxelder trees and willows grow along permanent streams; juniper and coniferous trees are confined to the higher elevations.

Core samples from an ore horizon 2,000 feet below the surface were successfully obtained by rotary drilling at the property of the Eureka Corp., Eureka, Nev. The ore was soft and friable; cores were not obtained previously with diamond drills. Whipstocking was used to get samples in a zone 200 feet from a vertical hole. A technique in shipstocking, by which the direction and deviation of the holes were controlled by means of nonfriction-type survey instruments, was successfully employed.

This report describes the exploration work done in 1941 in connection with the search for strategic minerals as authorized by the Strategic Materials Act approved by the President on June 7, 1939. It deals with the various manganese deposits and showings in the Tombstone mining district of Cochise County, Ariz. The exploration project comprised a study of the geology, mapping of the areas, and exploration of various mines and deposits by sampling old drifts, crosscuts, and scopes, supplemented by diamond drilling from underground stations. The Federal Government's manganese-purchasing programs have revived interest in occurrences such as the scattered deposits near Tombstone. Because of this, the Bureau of Mines project report on the Tombstone district, prepared originally in 1941 but not published, has been revised and now is being made public.

1. This investigation shows that the most important beds in Claiborne County, from the standpoint of present production and reserves, are the Coal Creek and Jellico. Together, they contain 69 percent of the known recoverable reserves in the county. Reserves in five other beds are tabulated in this report; in order of quantity of reserves, they are: Blue Gem, Lower Pioneer, Pewee, Big Mary, and Rex. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 60 million tons, as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

A simple method of obtaining multistage batch separations by crystallization was described recently. Known as zone-refining, it comprises passing short molten zones through a long solid charge. This technique can now be used on a continuous basis by means of the zone-void method described in this paper. Feed enters, at an intermediate point, a column down which molten zones travel, and waste and product leave at the ends. Materials move in the column through the agency of voids, which are introduced at the ends and travel toward the feed inlet. The voids and molten zones are moved by external heaters in a simple manner, and the principle of reflux is utilized. ANEW method of obtaining multistage separations by crystallization was described recently.' Named zone-refinina.,-, the method comwrises slowly passing a series of molten zones through a long solid charge. Solute becomes concentrated at one or the other end of the charge, depending on whether it raises or lowers the freezing point of the solvent. The separation increases with the number, P, of zone-passes, approaching a limit as P approaches infinity. Zone-refining has been highly effective in purifying germanium and other substances.2,3 and new applications are steadily increasing. Zone-refining is a batch method and as such it has certain limitations inherent in batch operation. If it could be made continuous, its scope and utility would be greatly broadened. This end has been achieved by the zone-void method described in this paper. In the zone-void method feed is introduced continuously at an intermediate point in a column down which molten zones travel, while impure waste and purified product leave at the ends. Both the flows of feed, waste and product, and also the travels of the zones, are actuated by external moving heaters in a simple manner; and the system utilizes the principle of reflux. The method provides, in the field of crystallization, the counterpart of the continuous fractiona-tion column in the field of distillation. The following will be discussed: apparatus and mode of operation, fundamental nature of the separation, design theory, and practical considerations. The method will be described in terms of a binary solute-solvent system in which the solute is an impurity to be removed and the solvent is the desired product. The distribution coefficient, k, defined as the ratio of solute concentration in the solid freezing out of a molten zone to that in the liquid in the zone, is assumed to be constant and less than one. The process is equally effective for k's greater than one and for ternary or higher order systems. Method and Apparatus The essential features of a continuous zone-refining process are represented in highly generalized form in Fig. 1. A series of molten zones, produced by moving heaters, travels slowly down the column or charge (to the left in Fig. 1). If there were no flows of feed, waste, or product, the process would simply be batch zone-refining, the action of the molten zones being to sweep solute down the column, solvent up the column. For the process to be con- tinuous, with stripping and enriching sections in the column, feed must enter, and waste and product must leave, as indicated. The zone-void process accomplishes both objectives, namely, the indicated movements of zones and the indicated flows of material. Zones are moved by moving heaters, just as in batch zone-refining. Materials are made to flow by creating voids at the waste and product exits and causing these voids to move to the feed inlet. Since there must be a net flow of material from the feed inlet to each of the outlets, the indicated movements of voids are in the desired directions, because movement of a void in a given direction corresponds to flow of material in an opposite direction. In order to produce the desired movements of voids, the column is folded into two vertical sections having the feed inlet in common at their upper ends. Voids are displaced upward by the liquids in the molten zones and their travel is actuated by the motions of the zones. Voids travel with the zones in the enriching section and move continuously. Voids travel opposite to the zones in the stripping section and move intermittently. Creation and travel of voids will now be examined in detail. The enriching section of a column in operation, with its void generator, is shown in Fig. 2. The column section is a vertical tube around which a series of closely fitting, regularly spaced heaters travel slowly upward. Each heater produces a molten region, the temperatures of the heaters and the cooling between heaters being controlled so as to maintain the molten zones approximately constant in size. A void is normally present atop the molten zone in each heater. As the heater rises, it continuously melts solid above it, which drips through the void into the molten zone and continuously freezes out solid below it, of concentration k times that of the liquid in the zone. When a molten zone and void reach the feed inlet, which is kept molten, the void is displaced by an equal volume of feed liquid. Generation of voids of controlled size in the enriching section is shown in Fig. 3. The void generator is a tube of small cross-section, provided with lateral heat-conducting fins which sense the position of the heater. Liquid can escape only when the entire outlet tube is within the heater. If any part of the outlet tube is outside the heater, liquid cannot escape,

1. The 1952 Annual Report of the West Virginia Department of Mines lists nine beds that arc being mined in Logan County, of which the Cedar Grove and Chilton are the most important. The Cedar Grove group, No. 2 Gas, and Alma beds have the largest remaining reserves, in the order given. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 5,411 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 3,939 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. The base of the biozone of Olenellus is accepted as the most universally applicable criterion for defining the base of the Cambrian System. The use of this definitive criterion is restricted by important practical considerations. In the southeastern Canadian Cordillera this zone appears to truncate the basal ortho-quartzite of a west to east marine -transgression. This transgression began in Interior British Columbia in the Late Proterozoic and terminated in the region of the present Rockies in the Late Waucobian. Most of the material deposited by the transgressing sea originated in the eastern positive element 'Laurentia' and was transported over the intervening low Proterozoic-Windermere erosion surface. The configuration of the advancing shoreline and the distribution of the sediments were controlled by the tectonic activity of positive elements in northwestern Montana (Montania) and in the Fairmont Hot Springs-Radium area of British Columbia.

CONSIDERING the nature of this audience, I perhaps, in addressing you on the subject of air transportation as related to the mining industry, should speak with tongue in check or at least with some reservation. I know full well that many of you, veterans in the great mineral development in Canada, are perhaps more conversant with the overall aviation picture than I, for aviation to you has been the means to an end, and in many instances has been part and ?parcel in the success of your particular projects, in the form of the initial means of transport. I feel, however, that we in this room today have somewhat parallel geographic interests - yours in relation to what is in the ground, mine in the air - and also in the forests and in the streams - aviation, hunting, and fishing - things which have occupied my attention practically all my adult years. In the light of what has gone. before, and in view of present developments, I think you will agree with me when I say that I do not think there could be a more intriguing pursuit than playing a hand in rolling back Canada's tremendous northern frontiers, even if, at this stage, we have made but slight impression on the untold opportunities which lie in our wide-spread, undeveloped areas.

Following investigations by the Denver Bureau of Mines on drying fine coal in the entrained state, Texas Power & Light Co. employed the fluidized technique to upgrade Texas lignite for use in power plants. Because of the rapidly rising cost of natural gas in Texas the company agreed to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in studying further the upgrading of lignite by low-temperature carbonization, since potential value of the tar would help off- set the cost of fuel. Considerable interest was aroused, therefore, when Aluminum Co. of America decided to use dried lignite in its 240,000-kw power plant at Rockdale, Texas, operated by Texas Power & Light. Carbonization of coal before burning in a power plant is not new. Plants in Germany have been operated for many years on carbonized brown coal and lignite briquets produced in large integrated plants. Large-scale experiments in carbonizing pulverized coal with hot flue gases were made 30 years ago at Milwaukee, and many inventors have proposed other processes. In the U. S., technical and economic problems have prevented successful operation of large plants on carbonized coal, but new techniques of handling solids in fluidized beds may overcome these difficulties, particularly if the higher volatile noncoking coals are used.

THE National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geological Sciences was established seven years ago - in 1949. In 1952, shortly after the Committee had really begun to function and had issued its first report, a paper ( l) was presented describing the objectives and organization of the Committee and the progress to that time. Another four years have gone by and the Committee feels a further progress report may be of interest. HISTORY Ten years ago, in 1946, the Geology Division of the Institute set up a Committee on Geological Research. This Committee, under the Chairmanship of Dr. J. E. Hawley, recommended that "a National Advisory Committ.ee on Research in the Geological Sciences be formed" (2). With the backing of the President and Council of the C.I.M. this recommendation went forward to the then Minister .of Mines and Resources and, with his approval, to the Committee on Scientific and Industrial Research of the Privy ?Council. As a result, the National Advisory Committee was set up in 1949.

THE oxidation of titanium has been studied in recent years by a number of investigators.'-W ne of the most important aspects of the reaction of titanium with oxygen, which has been observed by several of the investigators, is the extremely high solubility of oxygen in the metal. A detailed study of the Ti-0 systeml% as shown that the solubility limit of oxygen in a-titanium is approximately 14.5 wt pct 0 from 800" to 1700°C. The unusual oxidation behavior of titanium may be ascribed to this phenomenon, since part of the oxygen uptake enters into solid solution in the metal and only a part is available for scale formation. A more complete study of the kinetics of oxidation of titanium would require information on the influence of oxygen in solution in the metal upon the oxidation rate. Such information would also be of interest in regard to the theory of oxidation of metals. The authors have measured the oxidation rates of oxygen-saturated and oxygen-free titanium between 800" and 1200°C and have found appreciable differences in their rates of oxygen uptake and in the activation energies. The experimental set-up was similar to that described in a previous paper.u The course of oxida-dation was followed continously by attaching the specimen to a sensitive spring balance and observing the extension of the spring with time of oxidation. High purity electrolytic oxygen was used and precautions were taken to purify the gases employed. The specimens were prepared from iodide titanium and were ground on metallographic polishing papers to a fineness of 4/0. The furnace was first evacuated and filled with argon; the specimen was lowered into the furnace, which was then evacuated and filled with oxygen, after the specimen had reached the oxidation temperature in argon. The samples were presaturated with oxygen by means of the following procedure: Each specimen was first heated in oxygen at 1200°C until its increase in weight indicated 13.8 pct by weight uptake of oxygen. The furnace was then immediately evacuated and filled with purified argon five times. The specimen was heated in the argon atmosphere for a period of 72 hr at 1200°C in order to saturate the metal with oxygen by complete absorption of the scale. The temperature was lowered to the oxidation temperature, the furnace was evacuated and filled with oxygen, and the oxidation rate was followed by noting the extension of the spring balance. No oxide film was visible on these specimens at the start of the oxidation experiments. Titanium samples in the oxygen-free as-received condition were also oxidized and their oxidation rates measured. The results are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, which indicate that the initial rates of uptake of oxygen by both the oxygen-saturated and oxygen-free specimens are parabolic at these temperatures. In response to a request from the President, the Department of the Interior joined with other agencies in a comprehensive study of the land and water resources of the New England-New York region. As part of this study, chemical engineers of the Bureau of Mines have visited 1,025 mineral-industries plants to inventory the waterborne wastes of mineral origin, discharged by the mineral industries of the New England-New York region. Four-hundred and sixty-two of these plants disposed their wastes to a public sewer of some type, but waste control remains a problem for moat of them. The 1,025 plants are discussed in main industry groups according to their production: Chemical and allied products. Stone, clay, and glass products. Iron and steel and their products (except machinery). Nonferrous metals and their products. Electrical machinery. Machinery (except electrical). Transportation equipment. Miscellaneous mineral industries.
