Stress -induced ordering of carbon atoms is studied in a series of Fe-Mn-C alloys. A prominent peak is found in the vicinity of 280°C at frequencies of the order of 1.0 cps, with an associated activation energy of 37 kcal per mole. The height of the peak is linearly rekzted to the concentration of carbon in solution. The distortion of octahedral holes by manganese atoms appears to be predominant over carbon-carbon pair interactions. RELAXATION by stress-induced ordering of point defects is expected whenever the introduction of these point defects produces distortions which have a lower symmetry than that of the lattice. Under zero stress, the isolated point defects occupy the crystallographic-ally equivalent positions in the lattice, as these represent states of equal energy. However, if the defect sites are asymmetric, application of an uniaxial stress will split the energy states, and a redistribution of the defects among various states will take place. This is the case of the internal friction peak called the Snoek peak,1 resulting from isolated interstitials in bcc metals. The interstitial sites in this case have tetragonal symmetry. In the case of fcc and hcp lattices, such an effect is not expected from isolated point defects because of the symmetrical nature of the interstitial sites. However, internal friction peaks arising from interstitial diffusion have been reported both in hcp2,3 and fcc4-8 lattices. These peaks are often explained on the basis of stress-induced ordering of interstitial solutes, caused by the deviation of interstitial sites from their cubic symmetry through the presence of nearby defects. In the case of fcc lattices, evidence for interactions of both the substitutional-interstitial4,6,13 and interstitial-interstitial types5'798'14 have been presented by various investigators. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the internal friction peak attributed to the diffusion of interstitial carbon atoms in high purity austenitic manganese steels and to account for the peak in the light of the existing models. MATERIALS The Fe-Mn-C alloys used in the present investigation were made in two different ways, designated as Type I and Type 11. Type I alloys were made from high purity Fe-Mn alloys obtained in the form of 0.04- in.-diam wires from Materials Research Corporation, Orangeburg, N.Y. These alloys were carburized to different levels using gas mixtures of H2 and CH4 at 1000°C. Type I1 alloys were made in this laboratory starting with zone refined iron, spectrographically pure manganese, and spectrographically pure carbon. They were melted in an argon arc melting furnace and drawn into 0.04-in.-diam wires. All the wires were annealed at about 900°C for 3 hr prior to the internal friction experiments. After the measurements of internal friction, the phases in the samples were identified by X-ray diffraction and the carbon determined by the combustion method. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In the present work, a classical Ke-type pendulum was used. The details of the equipment were described previously by D. T. Peters.9 Dry helium at 40 torr was used in all the experiments. The internal friction, measured as the logarithmic decrement of the torsion amplitude of vibration was determined as a function of temperature, from ambient to about 500°C. The background internal friction was assumed to have the form of the exponential of the inverse temperature and was subtracted from the raw data. The height of the peak was measured at the position of the maximum in the plot of the internal friction versus temperature. The activation energies of the peaks were measured by the peak shift method. The internal friction values for an alloy were obtained as a function of temperature at different frequencies of vibration. The position of the peak changes with frequency, the higher the frequency the higher the peak temperature. The activation energy of the process associated with the peak is obtained using the formula

Operating variables affecting the efficiency of the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and the level of contaminating elements in the steel product were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Steel was made in a 400-lb-capacity BOF designed to rotate on its vertical axis to increase the area of hot metal surface subject to oxygen attack. Hot metal for the BOF was made by melting pig iron and scrap in an 18-inch (ID) cupola. The variables were BOF speed of rotation, rate of oxygen flow, number of jets and angle at which they were machined into the oxygen-lance tip, temperature of hot metal, reactivity of lime, and temperature of scrap for the BOF charge. Experiments were arranged according to a two-level fractional-factorial design. The effects of the seven variables were evaluated for 13 responses. The greatest ingot yield occurred while using the larger angle lance tip and jets. The most carbon burned per unit volume of oxygen resulted from rotating the BOF and using the smaller angle lance tip. The largest sulfur transfer to the slag occurred at the higher hot metal temperature levels and higher rate of oxygen flow.

Underground and strip mining (6,7) produce different hydrologic environments. Many underground mines are below the zone that is completely saturated with water and the mine openings may cause new and continuous contact between sulfurous material and water which flows from the saturated zone to the workings. Strip mines are usually above the zone of continuous saturation and contact between sulfurous material and water is generally restricted to periods of precipitation. A full appreciation of the problem of water pollution caused by drainage from deep mines requires a basic understanding of occurrences and movement of water in the ground and the modes of ground water entrance into mining areas.

This chapter discusses the evolution of high-speed shaft sinking in the South African goldfields. Whether we are talking of an additional shaft at an existing mine or the opening of a new mine, the increasing depth of the ore-bearing reef and the unremitting inflation of costs have provided the compelling incentive to shorten the time taken to sink a shaft and start earning revenue. The high costs of sinking a modern shaft system in South Africa are indicated by the recent example of a deep-level mine in the Orange Free State where the cost was nearly $22!42 million. This was for a single large shaft of 33 ft 6 in. diam (in all cases, shaft diameters refer to the finished diameter of the shaft, e.g., inside the concrete) and 7600 ft deep with a prestressed concrete brattice wall dividing the shaft into upcast and downcast compartments. Higher costs and the consequent demand for increased tonnages, deeper shafts with higher rock temperatures, which necessitate highly sophisticaled ventilation and refrigeration requirements, have all accentuated the importance of time in a shaft-sinking operation. Rectangular shafts with their simple design and comparatively reasonable sinking speeds remained popular for many years until greater mining depths combined with a host of the other allied problems inevitably led to changes in shaft design. Circular shafts appeared to offer many advantages, particularly when considering ventilation, strength, mechanization, and sinking through bad ground and heavily watered zones. However, these advantages were largely offset by the slow rate of advance necessitated by the need to stop sinking in order to line the shaft. The development of the curb ring which enabled lining to take place above the bottom of the shaft and the use of multideck stages allowing sinking and lining to be carried out concurrently resulted in a major break- through. Rectangular shafts, which are still popular elsewhere, have been superseded in South Africa by circular shafts which are almost without exception the only shafts sunk in our goldfields today.

"Gentlemen, one week ago, I attended the University of Minnesota's Annual Symposium on Mining, in Duluth. A good part of this symposium was dedicated to mill linings of rubber.At this symposium, three mining companies published results from long time full scale tests with rubber linings in mills at four different mines. These were the Republic and Empire Mines of Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, the Groveland Mine of Hanna Mining Company and the Eagle Mountain Mine of Kaiser Steel Corporation. These papers will be printed in due time and I will not endeavour to relate their full contents, let me only say that in three of the plants, the linings were found to be very economical compared wi.th steel, and that these three are converting over completely to rubber linings, while the fourth, Empire Mine, reported no economical results as far as the shell lining goes, whereas the grates showed promise of becoming economical. The authors of the Cleveland Cliff's paper, however, stated that design improvements in the rubber lining possibly could result in an economical lining also for Empire Mine.That rubber linings in mills, in most cases, show better wear life than steel linings, is known by most of the audience. But, one thing that has not before been disclosed by the endusers is the effect of rubber linings on the grinding economy. All three papers mentioned above reported no change in capacity or grind and two of them reported a decrease in power consumption per ton ground. Hanna Mining reported an average decrease over a three year period for one mill of over 10%. This, of course, puts the economy of a rubber lining in a completely new light. Finally, a point of interest at this meeting was that all three papers emphasized the design aspect, Thus the industry has acknowledged what I believe to be a very important fact - the design of a lining is often more important than the material it is made of."

The paper describes a statistical method based on regression and classification analysis which is designed to assist exploration management in the selection of prospecting areas and drilling targets in regional programs. The classification is based on three criteria which are formulated from sets of relevant geological, geophysical and geochemical factors: (a) regression estimates of expected ore values, (b) Bayesian probabilities of success and (c) expected utility payoffs. The advantages of the method are: (a) rational and unbiased ratings for areas or targets in a manner consistent with management's goals; (b) calculation of probabilities of success and confidence intervals for the ratings, and (c) rapid and accurate handling of a large amount of data by computer programs.

SELENIUM AND tellurium are by-products of electrolytic copper refining. Copper anodes contain 0.01-0.2 % Se and up to 0.04 % Te; during electrolysis these deposit as a slime at the bottom of the cell. Such slimes contain 2-15% Se and 0.5-8 % Te, as selenides and tellurides of gold, silver, and copper. The following compounds have been identified in the slimes: (Ag, Au)Te2, Ag2Se, Ag2Te, CuAgSe, Cu2Se, Cu2Te. Anodic slimes from copper electro¬lytic refining are a grayish black powder, minus 200 mesh. When this complex mixture is decomposed in an acid medium, elemental selenium and tellurium can be obtained, while in an alkaline medium, both metals go into solution. Acid leaching The slime is charged in acid digesters of 800-900 lb capacity, heated to 260°C with 78 % H2SO4, for 8-12 hr. During digestion the following reactions take place:

A statistical method for determining simultaneously some of the basic geometrical characteristics of porous media such as porsity, specific surface* mean pore width, mean grain thickness and absolute permeability is presented. The proposed method is characterized by its simplicity and the minimum amount of laboratory equipment that it requires. The experimental procedure used to evaluate the various geometrical characteristics is based 'pan the 'surface analysis Of a a In view of this fact the app1icability Of the method is limited to homogeneous and isotropic materials. INTRODUCTION The behavior of a fluid flowing through a porous medium depends, among other things, upon the internal geometry of the medium; hence the importance of developing efficient methods to determine the geometrical properties of porous materials. This paper describes a statistical method to determine simultaneously some of the basic geometrical properties of porous materials such as porosity, specific surface, mean pore width, mean grain thickness and absolute permeability. The mathematical formulation has been developed that the data required to calculate the various geometrical characteristics of a sample can be easily measured by analyzing a section of the sample with an evenly spaced grid. THEORY A simple way of obtaining information about the internal geometry of a porous material is to throw a point at random over a cross-section of a sample. l-Through this procedure the porosity can be detemined.l,2 By considering that the material is homogeneous and isotropic, and that the point is dropped many times, the porosity 4 is given by where N is the total number of times the point is thrown and n is he number of times the point falls within pore areas. Another simple manner of analyzing the structural characteristics of a porous material is to superimpose an arbitrarily long line on a cross-section so that its length is evenly distributed over the surface area. Through this procedure the porosity can also be determined. If L is the total length of the line, and 1 is the sum of the lengths of the line segments within void spaces, the porosity is given by 4 = —.1.............. (2) The advantage of this type of analysis is that geometrical characteristics other than porosity can be obtained. Thus, if c represents the number of intersections between the line and the perimeter of pores, it can be shown3 that the specific surface, defined as he surface area of pores per unit bulk volume, is given by To give a proper description of the internal geometry of a porous medium, it is necessary to define quantities that characterize the notions of pore size and grain size. Unfortunately, because of the complexity of porous materials, it is difficult to give exact geometrical definitions of what is meant by the ConCePtS of "poresl' and "grains", especially when dealing with consolidated materials. Never theless, one often talks about the "size of pores" and the "size of grains" without defining accurately the terms. A possible solution to this problem follows. Assume that an arbitrarily long line is placed on a section of a sample so that the line is evenly distributed over the surface area (see Fig. 1). 1n a system like this, each line segment within a void space will be, by definition, the pore width in a given location and direction. Morphological and electrical properties of GaAs epitaxial layers are influenced not only by changes in the nominal substrate orientation but also by small amounts of misorientation from the exact crystal planes. Deviations up to 5 deg from {11IA}, {11IB}, and (100) planes were investigated. Growth rates increase progressively with angle, approximately I u per hr per deg. Size and density of growth pyramids fall off with increasing angle, but other effects that are deleterious to the surface may occur which are heightened by increased misorientation. Carrier concentration decreases and electron mobility consequently increases as the angular offset increases, except in the case of strong compensation, where the mobility trend is reversed. It has long been known that changes in the crystallo-graphic orientation of the substrate may cause pronounced effects on the morphological properties of vapor grown semiconductor films. Reports of orienta-tion-dependent growth rates and surface characteristics are as old as the literature on epitaxy itself. shawl has recently published a comprehensive study of the dependence of growth rate on substrate temperature and orientation in epitaxial GaAs. It is also well-known that misorienting the substrate surface a few degrees away from the nominal low-index crystal-lographic plane often produces a much smoother epitaxial surface. This was reported by Tung2 for silicon, Reisman and Berkenblit3 for germanium, and by Kontrimas and Blakeslee4 for GaAs, and use is commonly made of this fact in the semiconductor industry to help guarantee smooth vapor deposits. The effects of substrate orientation on the carrier concentration and mobility of vapor grown GaAs were first documented by williams5 in 1964 and have been observed by several other authors since then,6,7 but no one has yet reported a careful study of how small changes influence these properties. We have made such a study and have found that sizable differences in growth rate, morphology, carrier concentration, and mobility can indeed be observed for epitaxial films grown on substrates that are oriented by progressive small increments away from the exact crystal plane. EXPERIMENTAL Early in the investigation an arsine synthesis system of conventional design8 was employed to produce growths on {111A}-oriented GaAs substrate crystals. In that early work, pronounced effects on carrier concentration and electron mobility were observed as a function of slight misorientation from this low index plane. That observation led to the more careful study that is reported here. An AsC13 system, differing in major aspect from those commonly in use today9 only in that the reactor is vertical rather than horizontal, was used for the detailed study. The gallium source was at 900°C and the substrates were at 750°C. The flow rate of pal-ladium-diffused H2 through the AsCl3 bubbler was 200 cu cm per min, and the flow rate of bypass H2 was also 200 cu cm per min. The substrates consisted of chro-mium-doped semiinsulating GaAs to facilitate elec-trical evaluation of the overgrowth by means of Hall and conductivity measurements on conventional eight-legged Hall bridges. They were misoriented by 0 to 5 deg from the {111A}, {111B}, and (100) planes, toward the (100) from the {111A} and {111B} and randomly toward the <111A> or <111B> from the {loo). The crystals were oriented for sawing by the Laue back-re-flection technique, which is good only to about ±1/2 deg; but after polishing or sometimes after epitaxial growth the wafers were checked by a diffractometer technique which is accurate to about * 0.1 deg. After lapping, the wafers were polished with NaOCl after the technique of Reisman and Rohr,10 and just before use they were cleaned in NaOC1, thoroughly rinsed with de-ionized water, and blown dry with nitrogen. Each run employed four wafers, each misoriented by differing amounts from one of the three major faces, and at least two runs were made for each orientation. The runs were continued long enough to provide at least a 15-µ or thicker layer. SURFACE MORPHOLOGY The appearance of all the films that were grown in a given run always changed from wafer to wafer as a function of increasing misorientation, but not always in the same regular fashion. A new method for determining rock drillability in diamond drilling is discussed; the method takes into consideration both penetration rate and bit wear. The method is based on drilling a rock specimen under controlled laboratory conditions using a model bit. The technique used for determining the experimental variables is extremely simple, quick, and reliable. Drillability is then determined by the mathematics of drilling. In considering the different factors that affect diamond drilling performance, the nature of the rock to be drilled is of outmost importance since it affects significantly the drilling costs and such other variables as bit type and design, drilling thrust, and bit rotary speed. Many attempts have been made to study this effect by correlating actual drilling performances either to certain physical properties of the rock being drilled1-? or to test drilling data obtained under laboratory conditions.7-13 These attempts were aimed at providing a reliable method of predicting by simple means the expected rock behavior in actual drilling, thus giving the engineer a tool to use in estimating drilling performances and costs in different types of rock. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a method by which rock drillability (a term used in the technical literature to describe rock behavior in drilling) could be determined in diamond drilling. It is believed that the proposed simple and reliable method will cover the need of the mining industry for a workable method of measuring the drillability of rocks. It should be emphasized, however, that since drill-ability depends on the physical properties of rock and each drilling process (diamond, percussive, rotary) is affected by different or partly different rock properties,14-l6 the proposed method of determining rock drillability cannot be extended to the other drilling processes. The results presented in this paper form part of an extensive three-year research program carried out by the author in the laboratories of the Greek Institute of Geology and Subsurface Research. During this period the effects of the physical properties of rocks and of such operational variables as drilling thrust and bit rotary speed in diamond drilling were investigated in detail. DRILLABILITY CONCEPT The literature is not devoid of drillability studies. While there are a number of investigators1,3,5-7,9-0,12-13,17 who have attempted to establish by direct methods (i.e., drilling tests under laboratory conditions) or indirect (i.e., through a physical property of rock) an index from which the drilling performance in a given rock may be estimated, very few6-7,9,12, of the proposed methods seem to be of much practical value to the diamond drilling engineer and none to date has been universally accepted. Commenting on the proposed methods for assessing rock drillability, Fish14 remarks that "for a measure of drillability to be accepted it is essential that penetration rate at a given thrust and bit life are elucidated as otherwise the method is of little value." This statement should be examined in more detail by making use of the penetration rate-drilling time diagram obtained in drilling a rock under constant operational conditions. Furthermore, the merits of using this diagram to describe rock drillability will be pointed out. At the same time reference will be made to this diagram when discussing some previously proposed methods. Fig. 1 illustrates such a diagram for three rocks,A, B, and C, which have been diamond drilled under identical conditions. It is assumed here that rocks A and B have the same initial penetration rate, i.e., VOA = Vog, but since rock B is more abrasive than A, rapid bit wear occurs and as a result the fall of its penetration rate with respect to time is more vigorous than in rock A. This is shown graphically by a steeper V = f(t) (0 curve in this rock than in rock A. Rock C has a lower initial penetration rate, due to higher strength properties16 but since it is not very abrasive, only a slight fall of its penetration rate occurs during drilling (in this category are some limestone and marbles with compressive strength above 1000 kg per sq cm). It follows from the foregoing considerations that the characteristic for each rock curve (I) is a function of (i), the penetration rate of the rock Vo recorded at the instant of commencing drilling, which determines the starting point of the curve (1) on the y-axis and (ii), the abrasive rock properties which determine the rate of fall of Vo with respect to time. Thus, curve (I) provides an actual picture of the rock behavior in drilling for given operational conditions, and it can be used with complete satisfaction to assess rock drillability. The influence of an external stress and plastic deformation on the allotropic transformation of single crystals of a Co-30.5 pct Ni alloy was investigated. Experimental results were obtained from dilatometry, X-ray diffraction, and optical and electron microscopy. The effects of stresses could be conveniently divided into three stress ranges. In range I, from 0 to about 400 g per sq mm, the specimens exhibited a multi-variant phase change on cooling and a considerable amount of retained cubic phase. In range II, from 400 g per sq mm to the elastic limit, hexagonal regions of a given orientation grew in size and the cubic phase disappeared with increasing stress level. In range III, just above the elastic limit, specimens transformed into hexagonal single crystals. It was found that plastic deformation, not applied stress, was the factor which determined whether a single-crystal product was formed. The observed macroscopic shear directions were mainly (112) on cooling, but the behavior was more complicated on heating under stress. To explain these properties of the phase change, a model based on the nucleation of partial dislocations is proposed. IT is well-known1 that, on heating, hcp cobalt transforms into an fcc arrangement by shearing on close-packed planes. The crystallographic orientation relationship of the phases is as follows: the habit plane is (OOO1)hcp ?{lll}fcc and a (1010)hcp direction is parallel to a (112)fcc direction. The temperature at which the transformation occurs in pure cobalt is around 420.C 1,2This temperature decreases with increasing nickel concentration: and at about 30 pct Ni it reaches room temperature. However, many of the transformation characteristics remain essentially the same, particularly the crystallographic features.495 A convenient way of studying the transformation is to alloy cobalt with nickel, thus avoiding the difficulties of doing experiments at the high temperatures needed to transform pure cobalt. Due to the hysteresis of the transformation it is possible to choose a Co-Ni alloy with an Ms temperature below room temperature and an A, temperature above room temperature. Either structure of such an alloy could then be studied at room temperature, depending on whether it had just been heated or cooled to room temperature. The choice of nickel is further favored by the small difference in lattice parameters between cubic cobalt and nickel and the similarity of their physical, chemical, and electronic properties. Co-Ni alloys are reported to have neither long- nor short-range order.6 The main purpose of this work was to investigate the influence of an external stress on the transformation characteristics of Co-Ni single crystals. It may be expected that slip, twinning, and transformation should have many features in common in cobalt, because the (111) planes of the cubic phase operate as slip planes when plastic deformation by slip occurs, they are the twinning planes, and they are the habit planes for the transformation. Many previous investigators7-&apos;6 have concluded that dislocations must play an important role in the nucleation and propagation of the transformation, just as they do for slip and twinning propagation. An external stress will affect their motion, and a study of its influence should yield further information about the atomic mechanism of transformation. The present work extends that of Gaunt and christian17 and Nelson and Altstette18 in both qualitative and quantitative effects of stress. The basic concept underlying all the present theories of the transformation of cobalt and Co-Ni alloys is the motion of a/6<112> partial dislocations over {1ll} planes of the cubic lattice. The ABCABC... stacking of the close-packed planes of the cubic phase can be changed into the hexagonal ABABAB... stacking by the sweeping of an a/6 <112> partial on every second plane. Twinning, on the other hand, requires a shear of a/6 <112> on each close-packed plane. The reverse transformation can be effected in a similar way by a/3 (1010) dislocations moving over every other basal plane of the hexagonal phase. Transformation theories2, 7- 12,14 differ in the details of the nucleation of the transformation and the propagation of the partial dislocations from plane to plane. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Nickel and cobalt rods supplied as 99.999 pct pure were induct ion-melted together under a vacuum of about 10-5 torr in a 97 pct alumina crucible. An alloy containing 30.5 pct Ni was found to have the desired transformation range, with an Ms near -10°C and an j4s in the vicinity of +10O°C. The ingots were swaged to &--in. rod and electron beam zone-leveled in a 10-6 torr vacuum. This procedure resulted in 12-in.-long single fcc crystal rods (designated I to VII) from each of which several tensile specimens of identical orientation were made. Chemical analysis of the bar ends indicated no contamination or gross segregation and no micro segregation was seen in electron micro-probe scans. Tensile specimens with a 9/32-in.-sq by 1-in.-long gage section were spark-machined from the rods and then electropolished or chemically polished to remove the machining damage and to provide a flat surface

In January of 1969 the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare, through the National Air Pollution Control Administration, published a series of Air Quality Criteria (4&apos;S) and Control Techniques (6,7) for air pollutants in compliance with the 1967 Clean Air Act which will affect the operation of all fuel burning equipment in the very near future. The design of equipment for the future which will use fossil fuels will also be affected. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the modifications which might be anticipated in the future for fuel burning equipment. One class of the several air pollutants looked at first by the USDHEW was the sulfur oxides. Other pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, will be studied and controls for these will supposedly be written in due time. The obvious use of low-sulfur fuels, coal, oil and natural gas is suggested by the Control Technique(6). Conversion to other sources of power, such as nuclear energy and hydropower, is also suggested. The statement is made that since possible hydroelectric sources are limited and nuclear plants are not yet available on a large scale, the changeover to these sources of power will not be overnight. The bulletin (6) suggests that one possible solution in some areas may be the use of low sulfur coals for short periods of time during periods of severe air pollution. Previous laboratory and field experimentation has demonstrated the effect of several variables on drilling rate.1-5 These results have been incorporated into optimization theories6-" for the purpose of reducing drilling cost. Minimum-cost drilling theories rely on a combination of historical data and empirical prediction techniques for selecting optimum bit weight and rotary speed. Past solutions have required extensive use of computing equipment because of both the complexity of the mathematical formulations and the large number of parameters involved. Field attempts to apply these computed results have frequently failed because of the uncertainty of input data requirements. Humble has developed an on-site computer system to control bit weight and rotary speed and thereby implement the concepts of minimum-cost drilling. This system can (1) perform short interval drilling rate tests for formation evaluation, (2) use the results of these tests as input information to solve minimum-cost drilling formulas, and (3) control bit weight and rotary speed in accordance with these computed solutions. The purpose of this paper is to describe the computer control system and present results of initial field testing. Theoretical Considerations Minimum-cost drilling (MCD) requires a quantitative evaluation of the variables involved. Several forms of a basic mathematical model have been sug-gested.&apos;?,&apos; "he relationships reported here form the basis for the solution programmed in this work. Four equations are used, expressing drilling rate, bit bearing wear, bit tooth wear, and cost. A solution for minimum-cost drilling assuming constant bit weight and rotary speed over the entire bit life has been programmed for use in computing MCD schedules. This solution is subject to certain limiting assumptions such as those discussed by Graham et a1.I2: 1. Drilling cost is the summation of bit cost, rotating cost, connection cost and hoisting cost. 2. Diamond bits are excluded. 3. Bit life is limited by either bearing failure or tooth wear, or by a combination of operational factors that make it cheaper to pull an incompletely consumed bit. 4. Circulating hydraulics are adequate and do not limit drilling rate. 5. Bit weight considerations exclude hole deviation. 6. Drilling rate is a function of only bit weight, rotary speed, and degree of tooth dullness; that is, the effects of pressure, lithology, fluid properties hydraulics and drill string dynamics are ignored. In 1956 the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created a "Coal Research Board" in the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries. Over the years through amendments to the original legislation, the scope of authority for research has been expanded from the narrow area of improving and increasing the utilization of coal to covering all aspects of coal technology and any other area of interest which would be of value to the coal industry. In January of 1964, the Board commenced a vigorous program using appropriated funds and funds donated by the coal industry to finance a research program devoted to seeking solutions to the mine drainage problem. A review of published literature on the treatment of mine drainage indicated that much work done up to that point in time concerned only the mechanism of mine drainage formation and theoretical chemistry. Very few applied, developmental, or engineering studies had been devoted to finding practical solutions to the problem of polluted waters being discharged from active or abandoned mines. Projects were therefore undertaken on a wide variety of more utilitarian approaches. This paper will discuss briefly some of the pollution abatement approaches which have been funded by the Coal Research Board of this State, and will describe in some detail a multistage flash evaporator treatment plant now under construction.

This chapter is a partial summary of an investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) made in response to a recent request by the Assistant Secretary, Water and Power Development of the U.S. Department of the Interior, for a comprehensive review of horizontal boring technology related to underground power-line installation. This review is concerned primarily with 3 to 36-in. diam horizontal holes from several hundred to several thousand feet in length. An electric power system consists of three essential functions: generation, transmission, and distribution. The generation component includes the generating station and step-up substation; the transmission component includes the transmission line and stepdown substation at typical voltage levels ranging from 69 to 345 kv for underground lines and 69 to 500 kv for overhead transmission lines; the distribution component includes the distribution line carrying the commonly used voltages of 120, 208, and 240 v, the distribution transformer, and the line to the service customer.l The Federal Power Commission reports that 1600 miles of underground transmission lines of 60 to 345-kv capacity are now in service in the United States. By 1980, it is estimated that approximately 3000 miles of trans- mission lines will have to be placed underground.2 The cost of burying electric transmission lines underground in metropolitan areas, approximately 30 miles from the center of each of the most populated cities, will exceed $1.5 billion with the methods now available. The wide spread in unit costs of overhead and underground transmission lines narrows as right-of-way costs for overhead transmission in congested areas increase. Improved methods of underground emplacement will certainly reduce this difference in costs and even further favor underground emplacement. Also, in the future, overhead transmission lines will probably not be permitted in highly built-up areas.

The demand for natural gas continues to increase at higher than anticipated rates, partly because of its widening price advantage over most other fossil fuels when the cost of air-pollution control is included. However, there are clear indications that the natural gas supply from the conliguous 48 states and continental shelves will not keep up with this rapid growth in demand indefinitely. Projections are presented which define the extent of potential deficiencies from the 1970&apos;s to the year 2000. Among the sources of supplemental gas - imported pipeline natural gas from Canada and Mexico, tanker import of liquefied natural gas, and synthetic pipeline gas from coal and oil shale -by far the most abundant at potentially competitive costs is pipeline gas from coal. The state of development and relative economics of the various coal gasification processes are reviewed. It is shown that synthetic pipeline gas could become a very substantial market for bituminous coal and lignite at current mine-mouth prices - 60-70 million tons of coal for each trillion cubic feet of synthetic pipeline gas produced. This corresponds to only slightly more than the current annual increase in gas demand. Although annual discoveries (gross additions to proved reserves) of natural gas in the United States are still on a general upward trend from the current level of 22 trillion cu ft annually, most forecasters do not expect this to increase substantially in the foreseeable future. For example, the updated (to include 1966 and 1967 data) mathematical model of natural gas discovery and production in the U.S. developed by the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT)&apos; projects that discoveries will level out at about 25 trillion cu ft annually in the late 1970&apos;s and during the 1980&apos;s and then decline to about 21 trillion cu ft by the year 2000 (Fig. 1). This adds up to a new supply for the period 1968-2000 of about 790 trillion cu ft. Experts who usually reflect the producers&apos; viewpoint, such as Radford L. Schantz of Foster Associates,* are relatively more pessimistic. In contrast, a forecast just made by the U.S. Dept. of the Interior is much more optimistic.3 It assumes an increase in gas discoveries of 2.2% per year over the period 1965-80, reaching about 30 trillion cu ft in 1980. If this rate of increase were extended to the year 2000, annual discoveries would reach 46 trillion cu ft at that time, for a total over the period 1968-2000 of about 1100 trillion cu ft. To these forecasts of new gas discoveries must be added proved reserves of roughly 290 trillion cu ft,4 bringing total U.S. supplies for the rest of the century to nearly 1100 trillion cu ft (IGT) and possibly as high as 1400 trillion cu ft (U.S. Dept. of the Interior). This is approximately the same range as that of two estimates of total remaining recoverable natural gas supply: Potential Gas Committee, 980 trillion cu ft5 and IGT, 1450 trillion cu ft.6 Only the 1965 estimate by the U.S. Geological Survey7 suggests that economically recoverable natural gas supplies will not be exhausted around the end of the century. These forecasts are, naturally, based on the assumption that changes in technological, economic, and regulatory environment as they affect the gas industry will be of an evolutionary, not revolutionary, nature. The various forecasts of potential natural gas supply must now be compared to forecasts of natural gas demand (Table I). The general consensus is that the recent Future Requirements Committee projection to 1990&apos; (extended to the year 2000 by the most recent U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) projection9) represents the minimum gas requirements (Table 11). They add up to a total of 1030 trillion cu ft for the period 1968-2000. Even this minimum anticipated gas demand exceeds the total remaining supply estimate by the Potential Gas Committee and would nearly exhaust the proved reserves plus new discoveries projected by IGT. The supply situation would appear much tighter if the demand projections of the Texas Eastern Transmission Gorp.10 and the American Gas Assn.(A.GA.)&apos;&apos; were used (Table I). Yet, these higher forecasts probably do not include the effects of such new markets as gas fuel cells, use of liquefied natural gas as a transport fuel, etc. They also may not fully reflect the impact of air quality control on the fuel market. Obviously, the probable discrepancy between projected supply and demand can only be accommodated in four ways. 1) Rapid increase in exploration and drilling activity to provide new supplies in the amount projected by the optimistic U.S. Dept. of the Interior forecast, coupled with an increase in net pipeline imports from Canada and Mexico from the present 0.5 trillion cu ft per year

An investigation has been conducted to compare short transverse and longitudinal fatigue and fracture properties in 4.25-in.-thick, high strength aluminum alloy plates. One plate was produced using standard rolling techniques while the other was pre.forged before rolling. Little difference was shown in fatigue strength of longitudinal specimens taken from mid-thickness of the plate. Howeuer, in the short transverse orientation fatigue strengths at 107 cycles were about 25 and 50 pct less, respectively, for the preforged and standard rolled plate. Differences in fatigue strengths were attributed to grain size and shape as well US orientation of constituents. Fatigue crack propagation rates and fracture toughness were compared at three different stress intensity (K) levels, using a constant compliance, double cantilever, wedge-shaped specimen. In a given plate, comparable fatigue crack Propagation rates were observed in the longitudinal (i9W) and short transverse (TW) orientations. Somezuhat gveater rates were observed in the short transzerse (TR) orientation. The preforged plute gave a lower rate for all three directions. Considerable secondary cracking developed, at times, over portions of the fatigue crack in both plates, particularly at the lower stress intensity levels in the short transverse specimens. Micro structure revealed constituent stringers as possible causes of the crack branching. Fracture toughness was considerably less in both plates in the short transuerse orientation. It is concluded that preforging not only improved directional tensile properties but also the fatigue and fracture properties in general. On occasion, aluminum plates have been milled away for hinges or bolted connections and stressed through the thickness or short transverse direction. Little or no information is available concerning fatigue characteristics or fracture toughness in this loading orientation in aluminum plate, or of the effect of fabrication on these properties. It was the intent of this project to examine, develop, and apply a unique specimen that has been advocated by others to study the fatigue characteristics and fracture toughness of two differently fabricated high strength aluminum plates. Linear elastic fracture mechanics criteria may be applied to the specimen so that the fatigue crack propagation rate and fracture toughness data may be of use for design or inspection applications. Fatigue characteristics are generally measured in the longtudinal or long transverse direction, where fairly large specimens such as center notched panels,&apos; are usually employed. Limitations are evident due to plate thickness, however, in the type and size of specimen that may be tested in the short transverse direction without extensions. Therefore, a specimen that is to be loaded in this direction should, for convenience, be compact. The general type of fatigue crack propagation specimens discussed and employed herein meet this requirement. These specimens are commonly called double cantilever beam specimens and lately "crackline-loaded edge-crack specimens".2 They may vary from a slope of zero (parallel-sides) to a wedge shape, the type employed herein. In general for most specimens the stress intensity KI at the tip of a crack is a function of the load, P and crack length, a. Some varieties of the wedge shaped specimen, however, give essentially a constant stress intensity KI over a considerable range of crack length.&apos; This feature can be a valuable asset in fatigue crack propagation experiments because the stress-intensity can be controlled simply by controlling the load without regard to crack length. MATERIAL AND METHODS Material. A standard rolled (light pass reduction) and a ~reforged and rolled (heavy pass reduction) plate of 7179-T651 material were used for the evaluation. The chemistry, processing history and average tensile properties are shown in Table I. Specimen Selection and Preparation. The specimen selected for the generation of fatigue initiation or S-N data was an axial tension type and is shown in Fig. 1. Specimens were taken from mid-thickness in the longitudinal and short transverse directions from both plates. Specimens were polished with 500 grit paper in a direction parallel to the loading axis. For the fatigue crack propagation tests, the specimen shown in Fig. 2 was used. This is similar to a specimen that has been employed by Mostovoy3 for fracture toughness studies on 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. It also fortuitiously agrees quite well with the dimensions of a specimen for which Srawley and Gross2

Although lateritic deposits have long been a principal source of bauxite and are becoming an increasingly important source of nickel, the problems in the evaluation of such deposits are not generally understood. In the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits, there are many similarities, but there also. are significant differences. It has long been recognized that laterites with commercial concentrations of trivalent metals represent the ultimate in the intense leaching of tropical soils. Any factors which effect-the rate of soil leaching will effect the form of local lateritic concentrations. Although the most intense leaching generally occurs on somewhat elevated areas of gentle relief where there is a free downward flow of rain water, the- effect of local rock structures in effecting varia¬tions in soil metal concentrations has-not been well understood - primarily because the laterite forms a masking blanket over the rocks from which the laterites were derived. All of the-factors which facilitate downward movement of water may effect greater surficial concentrations of trivalent metals. Such features as zones of fracturing, zones of greater rock permeability, and areas of karst topography may, therefore, be responsible for greater leaching. The variations in rock structures and the vagaries of ground water flow pat¬terns impart, to the laterites, rapid lateral and vertical variations in thickness and metal concentrations. Some of the geochemical relationships that exist between subsurface fluids and the associated geologic strata in petroleum producing areas of Louisiana have been determined. Samples of petroleum-associated water were obtained from 126 wells in Louisiana that produced from sediments of three geologic ages: Tertiary, Cretaceous, and Jurassic. The samples were trans-ported to a central laboratory for analysis of chemical composition, using standard methods, to determine if the compositions varied with the geologic strata of their source and, if so, why. The dissolved constituents were com-pared with those of a brine that was concentrated by evaporation. The concentrations of bromide, calcium, and strontium were useful in distinguishing the brines produced from sediments of a late age from those of an earlier age. The concentration ratios of Mg&apos; (total equivalent magnesium) and bromide indicated that dolomitization probably had occurred and altered the composition of the brines. A principal-components analysis of the data indicated an inverse relationship between depth and concentrations of bromide, strontium, calcium, and lithium.
