Radio propagation measurements were conducted in a coal mine at UHF (200 to 1000 MHz) and VLF (1 to 50 kHz) to characterize the transmission loss of intra-mine paths. The basic experimental parameters included frequency, polarization, path orientation and distance. Further tests evaluated the performance of roof-bolt vs. loop antennas at VLF and parasitic reflectors at UHF. Measurement results are summarized in a series of transmission loss curves. Examples are presented to show the use of these curves in predicting the performance of radio communication systems in mines.

Methane and other hydrocarbon gases, byproducts of coalification, are emitted from coal at widely varying rates and often present ventilation problems during mining. The air in some coal mines apparently contains no methane. To determine if coals from mines which had no history of detectable gas emission contained adsorbed methane, samples of coal at the shaft bottom and at an active face were obtained and placed in sealed metal cylinders. The atmosphere around the coal was sampled and analysed by gas chromatography. Methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, and butane were found to have been desorbed from these coals. Hydrogen and helium were also detected. An estimate of the amount of residual gas per ton of coal indicated that coal samples from the active face generally contained more adsorbed gas than coal samples obtained from the shaft bottom, although in both instances the total amount of gas was relatively small.

"Over the past five years, contributions from geologists and mining engineers were instrumental in the successful development of MEPS. It is a system of FORTRAN programs specifically designed to be used by mining personnel to solve geological and mining problems. MEPS is a flexible keyword-driven system. Extensive error editing procedures significantly reduce the time required to proceed from problem recognition to solution. Possibly the most attractive feature of MEPS is that computer solutions may be guided or selectively modified to obtain desired solutions. Some highlights of MEPS are:1. Vocabulary that is familiar to mining people.2. Geological data storage and retrieval.3. Statistical analysis and variograms.4. Contour maps of assays and geological horizons.5. J. J. Predali and J. M. Cases (Attachè de Recherche and Charge de Recherche, respectively, Centre de Recherches sur la Valorisation des Minerais, Institut Polytechnique de Nancy, Nancy, France)-The role of CO, in carbonate flotation is one of the parameters of a complex phenomenon: the adsorption of salts of fatty acids onto minerals. The authors therefore must be congratulated for their work. Their experimental results suggest some questions: 1) Recovery with C02, benzoic acid, or HCl, look very similar [(Fig. 1)] to that with the use of air; however, the recovery decreases very slightly (<10%). But in these two kinds of experiments, two parameters are different: the pH which is near 5.8 (with C02) becomes 9.1(without C02) and the concentration of Ca* I x 10-3 mole per 1 (without C02) becomes 1.9 X 10&apos; mole per 1 (without COO. 2) Adsorption experiments (Fig. 2) permit computing the surface coverage 9 which is 7.4% (without C02) and 8% (without CO_.) for an initial concentration of 12 X 10-6 mole per 1 in sodium oleate. It seems doubtful to us that this small variation can produce large increases of the recovery in flotation. 3) It is difficult to correlate adsoption and flotation experiments because they do not seem to have been done with the same size of particles. "This paper describes, for the first time, a patented method of extracting sodium sulphate from a natural deposit in Western Canada. The method resembles, but is not, strictly speaking, solution mining. The fact that a plant based on this method has been in successful operation since late 1969 will be of added interest. The deposit in question is located near Metiskow, Alberta, and conventional surface recovery methods could not be applied because of heavy concentrations of mud. Considerable pilot work went into the separation and recovery process on which the plant operation is based. The history of the industry is covered briefly as background to this development. Today it is clear that the method has broader application within the industry and, in concept, may generate interest in many other applications."

The explosive oils, nitroglycerin (NG) and ethylene glycol dinitrate (EGDN), were extracted from dynamites by a halocarbon solvent and were then determined by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Separation was achieved by liquid-liquid chromatography on a column packed with Durapak-Carbowax 400/Corasil II and the eluted NG and EGDN were detected with a double-beam ultraviolet detector.

Calculated equilibrium data are presented for three phases in the flue gas stream from a hypothetical open cycle MHD generator. A typical coal is "burned" with 1.0 gram-mole K2O seed per kilogram coal and with 101 percent of stoichiometric air. Tables of composition and the overt thermodynamic properties, enthalpy and entropy, are given for the temperatures 2200 (-100) 1100 kelvins, pressures 1.0 and 1.5 atmospheres, and slag rejection figures of 90 and 75 percent.

The work of the operational communication systems&apos; group dealt with a range of communication needs and functions within mines, primarily along haulageways, to and within sections up to the working face itself, and in mine shafts. A mixture of communication techniques and hardware is needed to satisfy this variety of communication needs within the differing environments encountered in U.S. mines. Substantial progress, both experimental and theoretical, has been made in recent years towards developing alternative communication systems suitable for use in mines which are based on "guided" waves, including wire-less (waveguide-like propagation in mine tunnels) and wire-based systems (leaky coaxial cables or wires) . Major priorities identified for further work needed to confirm (or deny) the applicability, and refine the operational specifications of promising communication systems for mine use include: Short-Term Projects o Cost/performance analyses of promising leaky coaxial cable and UHF radio communication systems which require further data from: - Experimental investigation under U.S. mine conditions of the performance of potentially applicable leaky coaxial cable communication systems developed in Europe (France, Belgium, and the U.K). - Cost estimates on these coaxial cable communication systems. - Measurements of UHF radio propagation in low-coal mines. - Investigation of the influence of obstacles (e.g. shuttle cars and section machinery) in the entries on UHF radio propagation in mines. o Investigation of the problems of transmitter and receiver coupling and termination matching associated with the two-way propagation of low frequency radio waves in hoist shafts.

"Access to the outside world is supplied by the Alaska Highway to continental Canada and the United States, the Haines Highway, and by the White Pass & Yukon Route to Skagway and Vancouver. Communities and mining developments located along the Alaska Highway are supplied daily by truck transport with commodities originating in Whitehorse, Edmonton, and Vancouver.The average payload on the Alaska and Mayo Highway is in the order of 16 to 25 tons and is subject to government regulations. Highway haulage distances to railhead at Whitehorse vary as does the direction. The Clinton Creek asbestos development is located 395 road miles north-west of Whitehorse whereas the United Keno Hill operation is 287 miles to the north. Cassiar Asbestos is located in Northern British Columbia at a distance of 357 miles south-east of railhead at Whitehorse. In order to service these various mines multipurpose highway vehicles have been designed to allow maximum backhaul of petroleum products. The White Pass & Yukon Route was established as an integrated transportation system from 1955 when it became apparent that three non-integrated systems (ship, rail and truck), with the various paper work and rising costs, could not continue to serve the needs of Yukon. Integration became the company policy and a system was developed. A special container ship (Clifford J. Rogers) was designed and built. This was the first specially built container ship in the world. The northern container integrated system was operational in 1955.In 1965 over 8.5 million dollars were spent in upgrading the container facility and the construction of a tanker-container ship designed specifically to serve Yukon and Northern B.C. This program was based largely on experience gained with the original container concept. Two tanker-container ships handled"

Although it is apparent that porphyry copper deposits may have formed in the Andean orogen from Permian time onward, commercial deposits thus far developed appear to have Cenozoic ages only. Following Chilean useage, the porphyry deposits are divided into either: (a) a stockwork, or (b) a tourmaline breccia model. Stockwork type deposits tend to occur on major strike-slip structures which may be either transcurrent or transverse faults related to plate movements, while the tourmaline breccia type may more frequently form independently of regional faults. Stockwork types may be conjugate fractures that intersect and ramify as a network of veins and veinlets, cutting altered rock, and genetically related to a major regional fault, or in other cases they may reflect the intersection of two large fault structures. Circular fracture patterns may more rarely occur in stockwork deposits in response to a specific intrusive. Tourmaline breccia types are characterized by circular and radial fractures genetically connected in some way with tourmaline breccia pipe development or an intrusive piercement that preceded it. Each structural model contains mineralized intrusive8 which have a close time-space relationship to ore and in each model, mineral paragenesis is similar, regardless of age or location in the plate. Also, each model contains the same type of alterntion halos (phyllic, argillic, prophllitic) as are developed in intru- sive centers in porphyry copper deposits found in North America. The potassic zone is exposed best in the older deposits. Examples of each type of deposit are illustrated, demonstrating the feature evolved.

Data from 68 entrained-bed carbonization tests were treated statistically by the Bureau of Mines, and several useful relationships were developed among the major variables. Nine coals, ranging in rank from lignite A to high-volatile A bituminous, were carbonized in two entrained-bed carbonization pilot plants. The carbonizing reactors employed were vertically mounted cylinders, internally heated, refractory-lined, and 10 inches ID. The range of carbonization temperatures was from 825° to 1,600° F. Using a regression-analysis computer program, empirical equations were developed by which carbonization temperature, air-to-coal ratio, devolatilization of coal, char yield, and volatile matter content of product char may be predicted.

During the past few years, a completely new concept has been applied to the design of drives for operating at very low speeds. In this, the motor is supplied by a variable-frequency thyristor cyclo-converter. Today, frequency converters with practically unlimited power ratings can be constructed. The system frequency of 50 or 60 Hz is reduced to about 10 % of these values. This makes it possible to operate the synchronous motor, which has a correspondingly high number of poles, at the extremely low speed of the driven mill, i.e, without interposed gearing. The first motors of this type were built to drive ball mills in the cement industry, which are very similar to those employed for ore processing. Here, too, the tendency is to build units of ever increasing capacity. In the case of conventional drives with mechanical gearing, this involves correspondingly increasing difficulties. These difficulties have prompted various studies of the possibility of applying the new type of drive to ore mills as well, but a gearless drive has not yet been built for this application. However, gearless drives for ore mills will certainly materialize soon and it was therefore considered a logical step to report at the A.I.M.E. Conference on the experience gained with these drives in the cement industry, and on the present state of development.

Reported fiscal year 1973 studies of fires and explosions seek to develop capabilities during mining operations to detect and quench ignitions of gas in the face area, to detect and quench by means of passive or triggered barriers explosions propagating in rock-dusted coal dust, and to detect incipient fires early enough for easy extinguishment. Research discussed includes minimum air velocities to lift coal or rock dusts, surveys to determine adequacy of rock dusting, chemical agents to quench gas or coal dust explosions and their relative efficacies, spectra radiated by explosions, and nozzle sprays of extinguishants.

A portable radon monitoring instrument capable of making on-the-spot measurements of the radon gas content of uranium mine atmospheres was designed and constructed. The monitor was tested in the laboratory and in operating uranium mines. Good correlation was obtained between the monitor readings and radon measurements made on mine atmosphere samples taken in radon bottles.

There are large areas on all of the continents with environments which are favorable for deposits of zinc and lead of Mississippi Valley type. In the developed countries, these environments have for the most part been quite thoroughly explored for the near surface deposits, and it will be necessary to direct more effort to the search for deeper buried deposits from which much of our future production must come. The difficulties of exploration for deep ore of this type are many and formidable, but the area of permissive environments beneath deep cover is many times as great as the area of the known near surface ore districts. It is a reasonable assumption, therefore, that numerous deposits wait for discovery and development. The finding cost, however, is certain to increase, and it is essential that concepts and techniques of exploration be improved if we are to sustain a reasonably strong productive capability into the 21st century. Exploration for deeply buried deposits requires at the outset relatively large areas of favorable geologic environment. The favorable horizons must be within economic limits of depth for the exploration as well as for the mining techniques which are currently available; and there must be some condition, design or strategy which will assure the explorer a reasonable chance of obtaining maximum benefit from discoveries which he may make.

The phosphorus content of the banded iron formation (BIF) and of the associated iron ore deposits in the north west of Western Australia is known to vary widely, a fact which has considerable econ~mic significance. Trendall and Blockley (1970) have described the variety of textural appearances of apatite in the Hamersley Group BlF, and suggest that apatite may account for the entire phosphorus content of the unaltered BIF.A preliminary investigation using an M.A.C. electron microprobe analyser has shown that, at least in some iron ores and in partially enriched BIF and associated shales, the phosphorus occurrence is more complicated than this. A suite of samples was examined from one location which covered the entire Dales Gorge Member and some adjoining macrobands in the Mt. McRae shale, together with samples selected for their high phosphorus content, degree of ore enrichment, and position relative to the enrichment zone. Calcium apatite was not observed in any sample of ore from this sequence, despite its ubiquitous occurrence in the BIF. Silicate mineralogy in the enriched regions also differs from that in the BIF, but this change has not yet been studied in detail.The phosphorus content of goethite in one orebody is often high and appears to be in solid solution in the goethite structure. It shows little or no variability on a micro-scale within a grain, except where theremay be a zoned enrichment near boundaries and solution channels. There is also a limited solubility of phosphorus in hematite (the maximum observed by the author is 0&#183;1 per cent P); but where the hematite is martitic (after magnetite) its phosphorus content is always low or zero. In some bands, martitic hematite has been hydrated to goethite, and this also has a very low phosphorus content. Phosphorus was not found in the silica or silicates in the ore, and even when iron enrichment is just beginning, a limited suite of samples from the BIF suggests that the phosphorus content of the chert microbands is almost entirely in the microscopic goethite nuclei (after riebeckite) scattered throughout the chert. In 1971, the Minerals Division of The Superior Oil Company acquired exploration rights to an unpatented claim group in the Superior (Pioneer), Arizona mining district, lying west of the Concentrator fault. This major post-mineral fault displaces the Magma vein-fault, which is mined in the Magma Mine at Superior, Arizona. The Magma vein-fault and the enclosing section of pre-mineral rocks consisting of Paleozoic and younger Precambrian sediments and diabase, is overlain by a thick section of post-mineral rocks, consisting of the Gila conglomerate, the Apache Leap dacite, and the Whitetail conglomerate. Geologic information on the thickness and attitudes of the rocks obtained from previous diamond drilling indicated that the section of post-mineral rocks might be from 3,000 to over 4,010 feet thick in the target area. (Figure 1) The Magma vein-fault is a steeply dipping vein which has produced nearly a billion dollars of copper, zinc, silver, and gold. It has been mined continuously for nearly 10,000 feet along the strike and nearly 5,000, feet vertically down the dip. It ranges from less than a foot to over 50 feet wide and contains sulfide mineralization con¬sisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and chalcocite.

This is a discussion of the application of the zonal harmonic series to problems involving dipole sources in the vicinity of spherical boundaries. The application of a formal zonal-harmonic series solution to directly obtain numerical results involves two distinct problems: namely, the convergence of the series solution and the accurate calculation of the special functions involved in the series solution. Some interesting techniques will be introduced which help to improve the convergence properties of the series solution.

The Windarra nickel deposits known to date comprise two sulphide orebodies located at Mount Windarra and South Windarra. These orebodies, which are 15 km apart, lie within an ultramafic complex at or near its footwall contact with a banded iron formation. The Windarra deposits are 270 km north-northeast of Kalgoorlie in West- ern Australia which was the centre of a major nickel exploration programme fol- lowing the discovery of nickel deposits at Kambalda in 1966. Surface indications of the Mount Windarra orebody were discovered in 1969 by Mr. Ken Shirley while prospect- ing the Laverton area for Poseidon Ltd. (then NL). The mineralisation was loc- ated by systematic prospecting for goss- anous material associated with aero-mag- netic anomalies and ultramafic rocks. The South Windarra deposit was dis- covered in 1971 by the Union-Hanna- Homestake Joint Venture, by exploring along the strike extension of the mount Windarra ultramafic-banded iron format- ion contact. Prolonged laboratory and limited pilot plant tests have shown that the Bureau of Mines buffered S02 -H2S process is capable of removing 95 to 99 percent of the S02 from industrial waste gases. Most of the S02 is converted to elemental sulfur; only about I percent converted to sulfate The process comprises (1) washing the flue gas to remove particulates and S03, (2) absorption of the S02 in citric acid or other carboxylate solution, (3) reaction of the loaded solution with H2S in a closed vessel to precipitate the absorbed S02 as elemental sulfur, and (4) separation of the sulfur from the regenerated solution by oil flotation and melting. Two-thirds of the molten sulfur is converted to H2S for use in the sulfur precipitation step by reacting sulfur vapor with natural gas and steam in the presence of an alumina catalyst. The chemistry and mechanism of the process are described, initial laboratory and pilot plant data are summarized, and second-generation laboratory operation and pilot plant design are reviewed. Preliminary cost estimates are presented for recovering sulfur from copper smelter gas, powerplant flue gas, and Claus plant tail gas.
