There are several methods described in the literature for the determination of the order and the rate constant for the flotation of minerals. These often involve some type of computational or graphical procedures. A relatively simpler method developed on the basis of a technique used by Chang" in chemical kinetics is described in this paper. Chang's technique, like most others in chemical kinetics," is based on the law of mass action which states that the rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the active masses of the reacting substances at any given time. Application of this law to the flotation of minerals would involve the adaptation of the terms "flotation" for "chemical reaction" and "floatable amount of the minerals" for "the active masses of the chemical reactants." There are indeed a large number of physical processes controlling the actual flotation rate. The most inefficient one of these could be considered equivalent to the slowest reaction in a series of chemical reactions. If variables such as aeration rate and agitation are kept at constant levels, the rate of flotation under free flotation conditions (i.e., conditions under which the suspension is dilute) will be given by the following equation: where C is the concentration of the floatable minerals in the pulp at any given time t, K is the rate constant, and n is the order of the reaction. If we represent the floated fraction of the floatable mineral at time t as m (0 m - 1) and C at t = 0 as Ca, integration of Eq. 1 yields

Galvanic interaction between particulate chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and copper results in the rapid conversion of chalcopyrite to chalcocite. The effects of temperature, surface area, concentration of sulfuric acid and agitation were systematically evaluated. The kinetics were found to be controlled by a steady-state current flow controlled by the effective anodic and cathodic surface areas involved in the galvanic couple. The experimental activation energy was 11.5 and stoichiometric data and reaction products have been characterized. The overall kinetic system has been evaluated based upon an electrochemical model.

The movement of materials is normally associated with a number of problems, some more easily overcome than others. Orebodies are frequently located in remote areas to which transport lines have to be opened. In the case of Mount Isa Mines Limited, the geographical isolation from the major consumer areas necess- itates long lines of transport and communica- tion. The problems associated with transport of metals and minerals vary from time to time because of the changing industrial environment. The increased size of vessels, changes in handling methods, and the economic pressures brought on by increased costs of transport without any guarantee of aligned increase in metal prices all contribute to difficulties which have to be faced by the mining companies in their effort to reach the markets with their products.

REAM (for Rapid Excavation And Mining) is a method of rock fragmentation by high-velocity projectile impact developed by Physics International Company. This paper reports the results of field testing over the last two years. The success of the method is based on the fact that the amount of rock broken per shot scales nonlinearly with projectile impact energy. Thus, high energy impact yields spectacularly low specific energies for rock breakage. The field work reported used 90- and 105-mm military guns to accelerate 8-1/2 and 10-pound concrete and steel projectiles to velocities of 5000 to 5500 fps. All tests were performed in a competent 25,000 psi granodiorite at Hope Valley, California. During the first year of field testing 26 feet of 13-foot-diameter tunnel were produced with the 105-mm gun. The first 20 feet of this tunnel were line-drilled to aid in producing a stable portal. During the second year the tunnel was extended an additional 29 feet using the 90-mm gun. The 55-foot tunnel was produced by 590 shots. Between 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 tons of granite were broken by each shot. A silenced 90-mm gun was placed underground and the tunnel portal closed with a steel barrier. Overpressures of less than 1 psi were measured on the inside of the barrier, corresponding to an impulse noise of about 170 db. The muck produced was similar to drill and blast muck. Overbreak and ground support problems appeared to be less than with drill and blast. The contour of the tunnel was easily controlled using the 90-mm gun; the tests were also conducted using a 57-mm gun for trimming. Projections indicate that advance rates with REAM will be three to seven times faster than drill and blast, at less than two-thirds the cost. This is based on the development of a fully integrated continuous system and an inexpensive propellant giving a total expendables cost of less than $3 per shot. Other applications of the REAM technology are found in secondary breakage for open pit mining, in drilling large diameter holes, and in underground mining for longwall mining, overhand stoping, and raising.

Construction of the first phase of the Sao Paulo Metro, the North-South Line, will be completed late in 1974. The downtown section of this line consists of 2.2 miles of 19.6-foot diameter soft ground tunnels and 3 subway stations. The entire tunnel - station package was let to one contractor. A plan and profile of the tunnels and stations is shown on Figure 1. Passage of the tunnels under Boa Vista Street in the Sao Paulo Financial District was one of the major challenges. The street is only 50 feet wide from building line to building line and flanked by 10 to 20 story buildings. The tunnels pass within 4 feet of adjacent footings. Further south, the tunnels run 13 feet below the flat foundations of the Caixa Economica, a massive 11 to 14 story building. Surface settlement had to he limited to less than .07 feet/tunnel and good face control and grouting procedures were essential. For this reason, full face cutting wheel tunneling machines were selected to drive the tunnels south of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia which included Boa Vista Street and the Caixa Economica. The tunnels north of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia were driven under a fairly wide Avenue and greater settlements were permitted. Open face shields were selected to drive these tunnels. Most of the work has now been completed and analyzed. There is a growing interest among transportation planners to make more use of the subsurface to preserve the landscape and make transportation more efficient and economical. At the present time, utilization of the underground for transportation facilities is severely restrained by the adverse environmental impact and high construction costs. However, recent studies performed by the United States Department of Transportation indicate that, in spite of such problems, the volume of underground construction has significantly increased during recent years and projections point to continuation of these trends(1). It is estimated that the total volume of transportation tunnel construction will exceed $4 billion in this decade. This level of Investment justifies a significant research program. Due to the common interest in transportation tunnels and to the similarities of problems encountered during their construction, the tunneling research activities of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are closely coordinated with the programs other agencies of the U. S. Department of Transportation DOT); specifically, the Federal Railroad Administration (PRA) and the Urban mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). The FHWA is responsive to the particular needs of these agencies but will benefit from the research results obtained also. In 1971, the Office of Secretary, DOT, initiated plans for an overall coordination of the DOT, FICA, UMTA, and FHWA tunneling research activities. The objectives of this effort have been to reduce tunneling costs by 30% and to increase the rate of excavation by 200% within 10 years. Transients are results of sudden changes which take place in power systems and can be created by the opening and closing of switches and circuit breakers or the occurrence of a fault anywhere in the complex. Transients are of short duration, and the time during which they occur is an extremely small percentage of the total operating time. However, it is during these short periods that the greatest electrical stresses occur, mainly due to excessive currents or voltages. In extreme cases, system parts are damaged, and equipment failure follows. Safety can be further compromised because anomalous voltages can exist at machine frames. For several years, the electric utilities have been well aware of the serious nature of transients on their systems, but problems firmly believed to directly result from these phenomena are just now becoming apparent to the coal mining industry. The situation became discernible after the underground introduction of high voltage distribution systems (along with vacuum circuit breakers) and sensitive solid state electronic apparatus. In order to protect against such transients, knowledge about their characteristics and origin must be obtained.

The equipment and procedures used for green pellet production on a laboratory scale are given, together with a description of the straight grate pellet strand analogue which has been developed to examine the response of various ore types to heat hardening. The capabilities of the analogue are illustrated with data obtained from the balling and drying studies using a manganese ore. Differences in inter-batch pellet quality are discussed, and method of minimising the experimental error that can arise from these differences is Presented.

"The Con-Rycon mine is located on the north shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories within the present city limits of Yellow-knife. Development work on the Con property started in 1936, resulting in a mine-mill complex which produced its first gold brick on September 5, 1938. Since that date 5,000,000 tons of ore have been mined yielding 3,000,000 ounces of gold. At present there are 220 employees at the mine.MineThe mine has 1.22 miles of vertical shaft, 41 miles of level development and 10 miles of inclined raises. There has been 1,000,000 feet of diamond drilling in search of ore. The temperature at the 4900 level (4400 feet below sea level) is 68 deg. F.The present mining method is cut and fill. The majority of the ore mined today passed through an internal winze before reaching the main shaft. The long haulage and double handling will be eliminated with the completion of a new shaft presently under construction to the 5800 level.MineralizationThe ore treated today is from the Campbell shear 1vhich is characterized by lenses and veinlets of coarse textured quartz containing some carbonate, sulphides and finely disseminated as well as visible gold. At the lower levels of the mine the arsenopyrite content in the ore is de-creasing with a~ increase in the levels of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite."

In considering the use of underground space for civil works functions, there are several criteria that must be met if transfer of any of them is to occur. It is important to recognize that these criteria involve social and political as well as conventional engineering and economic considerations. It is the purpose of this report to identify certain of these criteria and develop a set of measures that will permit the evaluation of the potential benefit of transferring civil works functions underground. The work reported here was completed for the ASCE and is contained in the report, Undergound Space, 1973. If one examines the total direct and indirect economic return from the location of civil works in subsurface rather than surface space, sizeable benefits accrue. This occurs largely because design, construction, operating and maintenance costs of these systems are highly dependent upon the forces exerted on these systems by the surface enviroment itself. Transferring of these facilities to underground space would eliminate a large segment of those costs. It is equally true that civil works functions compete with other uses for surface space and generate significant conflicts with these competing uses. Highway construction takes land from other productive uses. Electrical transmission lines conflict in terms of safety and aesthetics with adjacent social activities. Assuming that construction costs can be made equivalent, the analyses in the previous report indicate that the locating of all civil works functions underground would yield an annual net savings to the society of the order of 60 billion dollars. The final results of the operation of the Cananea test dumps are discussed. Scale-up factors between shake-flask tests, column tests and the large test dumps are established for the Cananea ore. The formation of clay layers, which formed inside the dumps and markedly affected extraction, as well as secondary enrichment, are discussed.

A slag-metal equilibrium study of the system SnO-FeO-(Si02+Al2O3)/Sn-Fe was carried out at 1250°C. The distribution coefficient, k =(Sn/Fe)metal X (Fe/Sn)slag was found to range from 246 for an iron contentof 0·53 per cenrt in the metal to 82 for an iron content of 6·4 per cent. The value of the ratio ?SnO/?FeO was calculated and found to be approximately a function of per cent SnO in slag alone in the region (Si02+Al2O3)/ FeO = 0·4 to 1·2. Comparison with other published work suggests that the addition of CaO to slags having (SiO2+Al203)/FeO ratios of about 1·1 raises the value of ?SnO/?FeO...

Glass sands fall into that extremely select category of mineral deposits that requires a fantastic degree of natural concentration (95% +) of a single component before they can even be considered as ores suitable for further refinement. The combination of geological factors that has produced such an environment of "mineralogical single-mindedness" has appeared only rarely. Factors that require consideration in the economic evaluation of a potential glass-sand deposit can be grouped into three categories: 1) geological (e.g., size, shape, structure); 2) petrographic (e.g., grain size, accessory minerals, nature of iron contaminants); 3) geographic - political (e.g., proximity to consumer, size of market, zoning restrictions). Of particular con ern is the nature of the iron contamination. Iron-bearing species appear as 1) accessory mineral grains, either detrital or authigenic, 2) cements, 3) grain coatings, and 4) quartz-grain inclusions. Selection of the cheapest form of beneficiation requires precise information on the mineralogy of the iron species and their detailed petrography. Because of the antipathetic relationships, in many parts of the United States and Canada between the geographical locations of glass plants and the geological distribution of glass sands, the selection of ac suitable source for a particular glass plant may be dichotomous. One may seek either an exceedingly pure "classic" type glass sand that is relatively distant and whose cost includes a major transportation charge or a relatively proximate and somewhat "impure" source whose cost includes a substantial fee for beneficiation.

Nearly 17 years ago a major producer of synthetic zeolites started an extensive exploration program for natural zeolite deposits which resulted in the discovery of over 170 occurrences in the western United States. A few years later several of the other producers and consumers of synthetic zeolites also started similar exploration programs. Since then, small quantities of natural zeolite minerals have been produced from at least 12 deposits in the United States. Of these the Bowie deposit, about 13 miles north of Bowie, Arizona, is the most important,having produced over 5,000 tons of vitric tuff zeolitically altered to the mineral chabazite and minor amounts of the minerals erionite and clinoptilolite. Mining Districts and Mineral Deposits of Arizona compiled by Charles A. Mardirosian, Consulting Geologist, estimates the value of the total production from the Bowie deposit at a very conservative $2,000,000. Unfortunately, none of the companies responsible for the discovery and the initial production of natural zeolites made any effort to develop the high volume, low cost applications of this unique mineral raw material. Instead, they developed only the high unit value uses to supplement their existing synthetic molecular sieve product lines. With the producers of synthetic zeolites thinking in pounds and not in tons, further development of natural zeolite deposits stagnated for over a decade.

The development of computers is examined in the context of the mining industry. The risk element is given as a reason for the slow introduction of the computer into mining. Dealing with mining's uncertainty is seen as a major role for computers. The use of computers is traced from early accounting applications to current involvement with all aspects of mining. The problems associated with increasing use of computers and their impact on management is discussed in depth. Disenchantment of management is thought to arise from unfulfilled expectations. Contributory causes are given as overselling of computers, reaction against change, speed and growth of computer technology. The solution is seen to lie in a more dominant role for user management in the development of computer systems and greater emphasis on education. The computer of the future will then become integral to the mining process as an extension of management's planning and control function.

An analysis of the geologic structure of an area of Buchanan County, Va., was made by the Bureau of Mines using imagery from an airborne AN/APQ-97 side-looking radar system to evaluate that mapping technique for delineating structural features that may cause mining problems. Side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) was found to be a useful remote sensing tool for geologic structural analysis, Fault and joint systems identified by lineaments and linear patterns in the imagery were verified by surface and in-mine observations. Little Paw Paw fault was extended 10 miles by SLAR lineament analysis. A 22-mile fault, here named the Bishop-Bradshaw Creek fault, was mapped by lineament analysis and verified by observation of the fault on the Bishop Coal Co. mine map and on offset patterns of commercial gas production along the fault and surface observation of lineament along the fault. Three major super-imposed joint sets and several fault or fractured zones were identified by SLAR lineament analysis, showing more complex structure than earlier mapping indicated. SLAR imagery accurately delineated structural features that are known to affect gas migration and accumulation and that weaken the rock forming the immediate roof to mine workings, causing mining problems and potentially hazardous environment in the mines.

Glass is one of man's most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860's resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer's economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material's potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.

"THE ECSTALL ZINC PLANT was built for the treatment of the Kidd Creek zinc sulphide concentrates. Construction proceeded throughout 1970-71, with operations beginning in April 1972. The two concentrate types treated differ principally in minor impurity and precious metal contents. Processing flexibility was required to allow efficient recovery of the by-products, especially cadmium, copper and silver. The conversion of the zinc sulphide concentrates to end products follows a sequence of operations that are common to most electrolytic zinc plants and typical of the ""Tainton- Jephson"" flowsheet.1. Roasting in air at an elevated temperature to convert the metal sulphides to soluble metal oxides (calcine) and sulphur dioxide. The sulphur dioxide is converted to sulphuric acid in a contad plant and shipped by train to market.2. Leaching of the calcine in spent electrolyte to effect extraction and recovery of zinc as zinc sulphate solution, leaving an insoluble residue.3. Purification of the clarified zinc sulphate solution by cementation with metallic zinc dust to remove impurities detrimental to the electro-deposition of zinc or detrimental to product purity. The solids from cementation are the starting materials for secondary metal recovery.4. Electrolysis of the purified zinc sulphate solution to reduce the zinc to the metallic state while coincidentally regenerating the sulphuric acid for recycle to the leaching step."

This Bureau of Mines publication provides the enthalpy of formation of malachite [Cua(COs)(OH)2] as determined by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry. At 298.15 K the enthalpy of formation from the component oxides is -15.l0±0.30 kcal/mole and from the elements, -251.9±0.5 kcal/mole.
