A novel two-stage froth flotation process to remove pyritic sulfur from fine- size coal is described. The process consists of a first-stage, standard coal flotation step in which high-ash refuse and some of the pyrite are removed as tailings. The first-stage clean coal froth concentrate is then repulped in fresh water, and a coal depressant, a pyrite collector, and a frother are added to float the remaining pyritic material. Laboratory and pilot plant flotation results with coals from the Lower Freeport and Pittsburgh beds are given. The pilot plant test results show that up to 80 percent pyritic sulfur reduction was achieved with the Lower Freeport bed coal and up to 50 percent with the Pittsburgh bed coal. Laboratory and pilot plant results were in excellent agreement, indicating that the process is a viable means of removing much of the sulfur from some coals.

Electromagnetic methods used in geo- physical prospecting for conductive ore bodies have proved successful in Canada,Sweden and other countries. In Australia however the depth of weathering generally exceeds 30 metres. This introduces a problem of highly conductive overburden and renders equipment useful elsewhere virtually ineffective. A discussion of several EM prospecting techniques is presented and a new system under development at James Cook University using V.L.F. transmissions capable of indicating changes in impedance (not only highly conducting media) is outlined.

Poor performance in the several stages of the magnetite recovery circuit, coupled with poor desliming through inefficient and over- loaded desliming screens, led to excessive magnetite consumption. An accurate and reliable sampling programme was established covering all outlets of the plant. Emphasis was placed on frequency of increments in an endeavour to detect extreme conditions of short duration. Systematic checking of the entry points to these outlets than identified those sections of the recovery circuit at fault, namely magnetite recovery separators and the heavy media cyclone product rinsing screens. More product rinsing water was provided, and modifications to the rinsing screens improved the efficiency of these units. Consistency of operation through automatic control of level eliminated the sudden massive losses in the magnetic separators. Load on the recovery circuit was then reduced by improvements to the raw coal desliming screens. A 50 per cent reduction in magnetite consumption was achieved.

In response to the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, mandatory noise standards have been developed that specify time-noise limits of mine personnel exposure. Most affected by elevated noise levels is the pneumatic roof bolter operator, both in terms of levels near or in excess of 115 dbA and in terms of length of exposure. Therefore, the principal emphasis of this Bureau of Mines report is on pneumatic drill noise control. It is not the intent of this report to suggest any drill redesign; instead, methods are suggested to reduce the noise level by complementing existing machines. An integral muffler system and a separate muffler system were tested in an attempt to lower pneurnaric drill noise levels. Pneumatic drills, when new, operate at about 115 dbA when drilling in sandstone. Using the drill muffler systems, it was possible to decrease the noise level of a 115 -dbA s rope drill to approximately 100 dbA.

The primary purpose of this paper is to review the fire and explosion hazards associated with hydrocarbons heavier than methane. Methane is the classical hydrocarbon encountered in mines whose presence is generally due to bacterial decomposition of organic debris. The higher hydrocarbons are more likely to be found during tunneling when petroleum products either natural or man made are encountered. Fires may be defined as rapid gas phase oxidations accompanied by the rapid evolution of light and heat. Explosions may be defined as uncontrolled fires. The rapidly expanding gases resulting from combustion exceed the speed of sound and generate percussive forces. The essential elements for a fire or explosion are shown on Figure 12: (1) a gas phase explosive mixture and (2) an ignition source. The paper will attempt to review various aspects relative to the explosive mixture; The concentration and composition; Techniques for detection; Techniques for ventilation to reduce concentration below explosive limits. The ignition sources are also listed on Figure 12. An arc originates from an electrical source such as electrical switches, relays and motor brushes. Static electricity can also be an arc source and may be generated by air flowing through rubber bases or a rapidly moving endless belt. A spark is generally associated with abrasion of iron metal. The Sudbury Basin is the scene of the mining operations of the Ontario Division of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. Around the rim of the geological formation and within thirty miles of the City of Sudbury are located twelve operating mines and one open pit operated by the Company. The City, with a metropolitan population of some 100,000 lies 240 miles Northwest of Toronto. In addition, there is one mine in Northwestern Ontario, at Shebandowan, 700 miles Northwest of Sudbury. In 1973 these mines produced 16.5 million short tons of ore of which 14.9 million tons were from underground and the balance from open pit operations. Mining methods include blasthole, sublevel caving, induced caving, shrinkage, cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill. Raise boring commenced at Inco in 1964 and is now applied at all mines in the Sudbury District (Figure 1). [ ]

Crosson and Peters treat the errors that result in miner location due to errors in the overburden earth model used for computing location. A parallel effort by J. Powell of PMSRC is discussed here, where the location method used is that of the Westinghouse location program - "Miner". This location program was tested by Powell by using arrival times generated from the overburden earth model of Table l* rounded to the nearest millisecond. Location computations were then made using 3 geophones at a time. The average location is tabulated for all geophone triplets except when 3 geophones are in line. Geophone arrays were as shown in Tables 2 and 3. The manner in which the test was done is illustrated in Figure 1. I. SUMMARY OF RESULTS The arrival time differences, based on the Table 1 earth model, together with geophone locations based on the array geometries of Tables 2 and 3, were entered into the computer, together with a stated depth of 700 feet and an estimated overburden seismic velocity of 10,000 feet per second. These parameter values were processed by the location program - "Miner". Figure 2 illustrates the interpretation of the plots and data. The tabular data and plots of Table 4 and Figures 3, 4, and 5 illustrate the location error results obtained. These plots indicate that for sources within the array, the errors are considerably less than the measured errors obtained during field tests of the present location system. The possible reasons for this discrepancy are noted in Part Eight (Earth Models).

INTRODUCTION The U. S. Department of Transportation has underway an important new program which will have a major impact on rapid excavation technology. The Transportation Tunneling Program, as it is called, is a coordinated, multi-modal research and development effort. Its goals, if realized, will significantly improve our ability to build the underground structures needed for transportation. This, in turn, will improve transport efficiency, environmental impact, and the energy consumption associated with the movement of people and goods. Tunneling technology research and development had its beginning at the Department of Transportation in the Office of High Speed Ground Transportation (OHSGT). The OHSGT developed and implemented a program in 1965 to provide the technology for underground construction needed to support future high speed ground transportation. In 1967, when the OHSGT was transferred from the Department of Commerce to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the program accompanied that office. The thrust of the FRA program has been cost reduction through the development of new materials, innovative designs, and better construction methods. Mining is claimed to be unique among industries owing to its dependence on exploration for its existence, the need to operate in remote, inhospitable areas, the vast capital sums required for development, the need to pay royalties regardless of profitabil- ity, the wide swings in prices for many of its products, the finite life of each-mineral deposit, its susceptibility to criticism by environmentalists, its dependence on export markets and sensitivity to' cost and exchange rate fluctuations, the uncertainties inherent in most mining legislation, pressures to grant mineral rights to aboriginal communities and the burden of having to finance its own infrastructure. The special problems of the industry have been recognised in the income tax laws which, generally speaking, allow for the deduction of all capital expenditure before tax is payable. Notable exceptions to this rule are the absence of special deductions for mineral processing facilities and the absence of any deductions for a large part of the expenditure on ports and port towns. This Bureau of Mines study was initiated to determine whether or not a large-scale investigation of 400-Hz applications in coal mines was justified as a means of increasing safety in operations due to size and weight reductions in portable and other mining machinery. Potential uses for 400-Hz power in mining operations are explored, and cost and size comparisons with 60-Hz systems are made. The use of variable-frequency motor drive is suggested for conveyors. The conclusion was reached that there is no significant potential safety increase due to a general size and weight reduction, as the fact of such general reduction cannot be demonstrated.

Lateritic nickel ore occurs as a supergene or residual deposit as a result of the tropical weathering of underlying ultramafic rocks. The mineralisation may be as hydrated Ni-Mg silicates, like garnierite (silicate ore); or as hydrated Ni-Fe oxide (oxide) ore. Non-sulphide ore represents only 30% of the tonnage mined, but represents 85% of the total world's nickel reserves. A typical lateritic profile consists of 4 zones above the unweathered ultramafic parent rock: Zone 1: the "upper laterite" which is dark red-brown, porous and concentrically structured. It contains 0.2 to 0.8% Ni, 48.0 to 72.0% Fe, and 0 to 9.5% MgO. It is often capped by a ferricrete crust. Zone 2: the "middle laterite", which is red-brown to light brown and more porous than the above zone. It contains 0.8 to 1.5% Ni, 42.0 to 48.0% Fe and 0.5 to 6.0% MgO. The quantity of methane emitted into the mine atmosphere and the movement of gas through solid coal and the adjoining country rock are dependent on the physical properties of the medium, boundary con¬ditions, the initial gas pressure distribution, and the combination of natural and mining factors. Functional relationships between these factors are not yet known. Consequently, the development of rigorous mathematical models to predict methane flow into the mine air is difficult and to date no model has been reported which is capable of such a function. Thus far, empirical formulas available for the calculation of gas quantity released from underground sources require too much his¬torical data, not currently available. Again, these estimations are at best only crudely approximate. The numerical methods available have not been made practical enough for industry wide application. Therefore, the development of a relationship amenable to numerical analysis and practical enough for use in the industry would provide the flexibility lacking in analytical approaches. The mathematical models given in equations (7) and (8) are further attempts in presenting practical models for predicting the quantity of methane emission into the mine environment. Equation (7) is the steady state model and equation (8) is the unsteady state model.

This Volume documents the Phase 111 effort on the Seismic Detection and Location of Isolated Miners on Contract H0122026 undertaken during the fall of 1972 by a task team composed of ADL staff and several seismic consultants. The team was assembled specifically to work together on complementary tasks, at an accelerated level of effort for four months, to meet the Bureau of Mines' time schedule for obtaining independent, objective, technical judgments regarding seismic methods and systems for detecting and locating isolated miners. The impetus for this work resulted from a compilation and analysis, during the first half of 1972, of new experimental data obtained from a series of in-mine field tests conducted by Westinghouse Corp .+ using the CMRSS* interim seismic location system. The Bureau of Mines took advantage of the availability of these new data to reassess the potential and limitations of various seismic methods and systems, and to direct its seismic system improvement program accordingly. ADL assisted the Bureau in this reassessment by drawing on the skills of seismic consultants from industry, universities and government, to supplement the skills of the ADL project team. The consultants were principal resources of broadly-based and detailed technical expertise in the areas of seismic signal-source and signal-propagation characteristics, natural and cultural seismic noise, seismic sensors and field instrumentation, seismic signal and data processing for detection and location, and overall seismic system utilization in the field under operational emergency conditions. Specifically, the participating consultants were: F. Crowley, Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories ; W. Dean, Teledyne Geotech, Alexandria Laboratories; R. Greenfield, Pennsylvania State University; J. Kuo, Columbia University; D. Peters and R. Crosson, University of Washington; and F. Pilotte, U.S. VELA Seismological Center. The principal ADL participants were J. Ginty, R. Lagace, M. Roetter, and R. Spencer.

The subject of Specialty Silica Products could encompass a broad range of materials, some of which would be familiar to members of the Society of Mining Engineers. With the concurrence of your chairman, I have chosen to limit my remarks to synthetic materials, not including such siliceous materials as diatomaceous earth, asbestos, quartz and clays. For purposes of discussion, I have classified Specialty Silica Products into two groups -- powders and liquids -- which I will discuss in that order and which are categorized in Figure 1. The synthetic silica powders are amorphous to x-rays and are manufactured by various processes resulting in products of a wide range of physical and chemical properties, as well as functional performance and applications. Applications or functional properties are generally dependent upon such physical properties as micron-sized particles exhibiting large surface areas per unit weight and low apparent bulk density. Their presence in various systems modify surface properties. As summarized in Figure 2, they act as viscosity modifiers, flow conditioning agents, anti-slip agents, anti-blocking agents, flatting agents in surface coatings, reinforcing agents in polymers such as silicone rubber and numerous other applications. Although the various types of silicas exhibit various levels of functional performance in these end uses, they are not usually equally effective as direct replacements and I will briefly discuss the various types of materials.

Limestone neutralization of acid mine drainage has been proposed and examined as a method of treatment. However, limestones differ greatly in composition and structure. The reactivity of 14 selected limestones was studied, both by chemical and physical properties and by relative effectiveness in neutralizing synthetic and actual mine waters, and several guidelines for the choice of limestones are given. The particle size should be at least as small as 74 microns and preferably smaller. The most effective limestones are most nearly pure calcium carbonate. Stones which have a relatively low calcium con- tent but which contain calcite and have a large surface area are also effective neutralizers. Magnesite and dolomitic limestones are much less reactive. Disadvantages in using even the most reactive lime- stones for neutralization are indicated.

In this paper, a subtle, but important, difference has been drawn between responsibility and mandate. Responsibility has a connotation of financial involvement assigned to an organ- isation as a result of some action it takes, the ramifications of which can be ascribed directly to the organisation. In contrast mandate relates to the power and authority to act. The paper outlines the role of poli- ticians as community decision-makers and the need for Government policy to be flexible in an advanced industrial society so that decision- making options are kept open for as long as necessary. Further, broad community objectives need to be understood and defined so that plans and policies can be consistent. Co-ordination through communication at all levels, especially at the public administration interfaces and with the private sector,is essential for effective resource allocation and efficient implementation. The paper discusses several aspects of the infrastructure responsibility question and some considerations which might be viewed as important by the community decision-makers in considering what responsibility the "community" should accept in providing infrastructure.

Methane concentration peaks were measured by the Bureau of Mines at coal mine working faces during entry development. The statistical distribution of peaks was found to be normal or log normal depending on how well the methane was being mixed into the ventilation airstream. A normal distribution indicated good mixing, whereas a log-normal distribution indicated that mixing was poor. In addition, the "highest" peaks over selected intervals were found to fit a type I extreme-value distribution, a result similar to that obtained while mining longwall faces.
