The product sizing and tonnage from a grinding circuit are the end result of a series of linked size reduction stages which always involve: fragmentation in mining; degradation in transport of ore; crushing and finally grinding. A case study is presented which illustrates the substantial effect on autogenous mill throughput of different mining practice. It is shown that it is possible to model each of the size reduction steps of fragmentation, degradation, crushing and grinding. The way in which this predictive capability is used is dependent on the operating constraints of each mine-mill combination.

Qinling Tunnel is the longest tunnel in China. The rock stratum is very hard rock - intact mixed gneiss. At the beginning of the construction, drift-pilot excavation is very costly due to the use of regular drill and blasting methods. After tests on the acoustic impedance match between rock and explosive, watergel explosive, which has a high velocity of detonation and high brisance, has been used for hard rock blasting. In addition, different cut plans have been compared. It was found that four-large-hole cut is the most effective. And the number of drillholes and specific charge cut down and the average advance reaches more than 94% of the blastholes depth. Thus, the difficult problem of hard rock blasting in drift pilot is successfully solved, while safe and quick construction is guaranteed.

"The Construction Group is responsible for the construction of all of Placer Dome’s major projects and contributes to the development of most major feasibility studies. This group includes an international collection of Placer Dome people who have built mines in Papua New Guinea, Australia, Chile, the United States and Canada. This paper outlines the changing role of the Construction Group from the early days of single projects to today, when several projects are in various phases from feasibility to construction. The projects’ total annual budgets have from time to time exceeded one billion dollars. IntroductionAs the competition increases globally between the major gold mining companies, the impetus continues to build mines at the lowest cost with the shortest construction schedule. Placer Dome has more than met that challenge by building mines around the world at a pace that was not contemplated 15 or 20 years ago. Since 1960, Placer Dome has built 30 mines and expansions at a cost of nearly 4.5 billion dollars.In the last six years alone, Placer Dome has built 14 mines and expansions, worth 2.6 billion dollars. The company’s success is due primarily to Experience, Innovation, People and Standards.The diversity between projects, let alone the pace, has been a challenge. Placer Dome has built mines around the world in a variety of extreme climates and distinctive cultures. The construction experience gained from these projects has allowed Placer Dome to develop an extensive knowledge and data base making it easier to “fast track” projects.Through the years Placer Dome has developed a human resource base. It now has an experienced and adaptable core team of people able to set up construction projects and build mines anywhere in the world. By developing standards and systems to support the projects they can act as soon as a new project is approved, and complete the projects quickly and effectively. The result is that Placer Dome now has the construction expertise to build its own mines, giving them the competitive advantage that allows them to design and construct a mine in the least time at the lowest capital cost. This was demonstrated in March 1997 with the completion of the construction of two new mines in 12 months."

During 1991 - 1993 the author interviewed approximately thirty senior managers of varying responsibilities in either the engineering, construction or operation of a heavy industrial facility. The purpose of the exercise was to determine the factors driving a deterioration of the working relationship between the engineering and the operating company following practical completion of a major project. From the research a number of conclusions have been drawn as to the root cause of the deteriorating relationship. For this paper we are drawing on this initial research and our ongoing experience of solving problems of this nature to present some fundamentals that can be used to break the breakdown maintenance cycle.

In 1933 the Cobre Mining Company re-opened the 32-year-old UV Industry Mine, which is located in a scenic canyon near Silver City, New Mexico. The site location is shown in Figure 1. Current mineral extractions are copper and magnetite; both extractions similar to those mined many years ago. Copper is extracted from chalcopyrite imbedded in the host rock of massive limestone deposits and magnetite, an iron ore, is a by-product of the same extraction process.

Results are presented that were gathered during pilot-and field-scale testing of an innovative technology, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), designed to treat and control acid mine drainage (AMD). The project was performed under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), which is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy through an Interagency Agreement. The MWTP is implemented by MSE, Technology Applications, Inc., located in Butte, Montana. Sulfate-reducing bacteria, a common group of anaerobic bacteria, produce hydrogen sulfide and bicarbonate when supplied with sources of carbon and sulfate. Hydrogen sulfide reacts with metal ions in AMD, precipitating them as metal sulfides; the bicarbonate serves to help neutralized the drainage. Pilot-scale testing was performed within eight packed-bed reactors at a temperature representative of a field application of this technology in a northern climate, nominally 8°C. The reactors, packed with an organic substrate, were operated continuously in upflow configurations receiving AMD at a flow rate corresponding to a 5-day retention time over a test duration of 60 days. During this time, numerous physical and chemical parameters were monitored. Pilot-scale metal removal efficiencies reached 99% for zinc, 99% for aluminum, 96% for manganese, 98% for cadmium, and 96% for copper. Iron and arsenic removal was not as effective as the aforementioned metals, which was largely attributed to the high levels of iron and arsenic contaminating the organic substrate. Evidence existed that both adsorption and sulfate reduction were occurring within the reactors.

The Peruvian mining industry has seen an explosion of foreign investment since President Albert? Fujimori's government was first elected in 1990. Since then, Peru has taken some large steps toward recovery, making it the envy of most other developing countries. A measure of political stability was gained in 1992 when Shining Path leader Abimael Guzman was captured. In addition, the country has taken on a huge privatization program, rewritten its foreign investment laws and has reined in its annual inflation rate from 1,700% in 1990 to about 8% by late 1997. Small wonder then that attendance at the XXIII Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers conference reached a record level, many of whom are employed by some of the world's largest mining companies. About 2,700 mining industry professionals from all over the world attended the week-long event, held in late September in Arequipa. That was an increase from 1995s 1,600 attendees, that meeting also held in Arequipa.

The Osborne copper-gold deposit was discovered in North-West Queensland in 1989. Underground production activities commenced at Osborne deposit in April 1996. This paper will examine technical and operational aspects of the underground mine during its development to a 1.2 Mtpa operation . Technical aspects discussed include geology, mine design and mining methods, equipment fleet selection and capital infrastructure. Operational aspects discussed include the evolution and performance of the integrated work teams that are utilised at Osborne to perform all mining and maintenance activities.

"Abstract - Traditionally, the emphasis in ore and reserve inventory has been to provide fairly simple definitions and presentations for reporting to shareholders and the investing public. The recent introduction of the mineral resource category aims to take into account the "part of the deposit that cannot yet be produced or extracted legally and profitably." Recent proposals still place insufficient emphasis on relating resource/reserve reporting definitions more closely to the needs of mining and exploration operators for the estimation and inventory of these basic material assets.In most schemes, significant ambiguities and shortcomings remain. These concern the potential economic interest of resources, the concept of continuity which is fundamental to the estimation of volumes, mass and grades, the objectives of the production feasibility study and the requirements of the geology, engineering and economic appraisals leading to it, and the "availability" of the permits required to start mine development. Up to now, no industry-wide formal consensus has yet been reached for any of these steps, nor for reconciliation between successive statements.A resource/reserve inventory scheme is presented here that is based on ISO 9000 principles and the Australasian system. Explicit criteria and transition points are proposed to define resource and reserve. Similarly, appropriate criteria are proposed to classify the three mineral resource and two ore reserve categories, based on geological and value continuity and on the objectives of the feasibility study. This scheme offers a way to develop ISO 9001 certification of resource/reserve estimation procedures for mining operations and supply exploration companies with an appropriate inventory system, to allow better information for the shareholders and the investing public.Résumé - L’objectif des inventaires des minerais et des réserves est, depuis le début du siècle, de fournir des définitions simples et d’ordre général visant les actionnaires et le public investisseur. L’introduction d’une catégorie de « ressources minérales » fournira un cadre tenant compte de la "portion d’un gisement qui ne peut encore être extraite ou exploitée légalement et à profit." Cependant, les propositions récentes de systèmes d’inventaires ne comportent pas des définitions des ressources et réserves qui tiennent compte suffisamment des besoins des opérateurs en exploitation et en exploration minière.La plupart des systèmes comportent des ambiguïtés et des carences. Citons la susceptibilité d’exploitation commerciale des ressources, la continuité qui est au centre de l’estimation des volumes, masses et teneurs, les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité de la mise en production, le niveau requis des travaux de géologie, d’ingénierie et d’économique qui y mènent, ainsi que la disponibilité des permis dont dépend la mise en production. Il n’y a jusqu’à maintenant aucun consensus dans l’industrie sur ces points, ni sur des procédures de réconciliation entre les estimations successives.Le système d’inventaire des ressources/réserves proposé ici s’appuie sur la structure ISO 9000 et le système australien. Des critères et des points tournants explicites sont établis pour définir les ressources et les réserves. The George Fisher deposit is a significant sediment hosted silver-leadzinc resource located 2 km north of the Hilton Mine in NW Queensland. The George Fisher feasibility project involved the completion of underground and surface drilling programs to delineate Measured and Indicated Resource which could be converted to an Ore Reserve through mining and commercial studies. The geological information which was collected and used for the feasibility study included a major program of diamond drilling, predominantly from underground sites, but with some drilling also completed from surface. All drillcore was geologically and geotechnically logged, sampled and assayed. Data was also collected from underground cross-cut and drive development which was mapped for rocktype, ore distribution, structure and geotechnical condition. This new geological data, generated during the Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility stages, was combined with results of all previous drilling campaigns in the George Fisher area to produce a comprehensive database on which geological modelling and Resource estimation could be based. To allow fast and accurate collection and utilisation of data from the drilling program, digital collection processes were used where possible. This resulted in rapid data entry into the project database, significantly enhanced data quality, 100 per cent data ownership within the project team and increased productivity levels. Processes used during the project data collection program are described, lessons learned are related and suggestions for ænext timeÆ are listed using the benefit of hindsight.

"A number of studies have identified the presence of heavy minerals in the Athabasca oil sands. A 1996 Mineral Development Agreement study into the recovery of Co-Products identified low operating costs, a simple flowsheet and access to market as key drivers in advancing interest in a viable project.Commercial bitumen extraction processes recover 50% of the titanium heavy minerals and 85% of the zircon into froth containing 1 % of the feed solids. Froth treatment tailings grade is 11.5% Ti02 and 3.6% Zr02.Processing this high grade feed in a combination of flotation, roasting, screening, gravity concentration and magnetic separation, results in concentrates of rutile, leucoxene, ilmenite, zircon and rare earths of marketable quality.A combination of high grade feed and a simple process lead to operating costs among the lowest in the industry. Low cost heavy minerals and low energy costs indicate an intriguing potential for low cost pigment production in Alberta. The production of heavy minerals from oil sands remains one of the largest untapped resources in the Province of Alberta1.0 IntroductionThis paper describes the results of an investigation into the recovery of heavy minerals from tailings produced by the major oil sands plants. The study was carried out under a Canada-Alberta Mineral Development Agreement (Alberta Chamber of Resources 1996). The Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelting/Converting Process employs an electric furnace for settling the slag/matte mixture formed in the smelting furnace. In order to improve the separation of slag and matte and to minimize power consumption, the design and the operating conditions of the electric furnace should be optimized. As the first step, numerical heat and fluid flow analysis of the melts was carried out based on the distribution of current density and Joule?'s heat obtained by the electric field calculation. For these calculations, 3-D body fitted coordinate system and a finite volume method were applied. Using the developed numerical model, the flow pattern analysis by pulse input of a tracer element was simulated. It was found that a strong thermal convection of the molten slag exists around the electrodes due to the concentrated Joule's heat generation in a small area just under the electrodes, and this strongly affects the flow pattern in the furnace. The calculation results were compared with the data obtained from 'a plant test.

Mesothermal quartz lodes in Paleozoic Greenland Group metasediments of the Reefton area have produced 67 t of gold up to 1951, and recent exploration has identified new gold resources in several deposits, including the largest past producers, Blackwater and Globe Progress. The metasediments consist of alternating sandstone and argillite, metamorphosed to lower greenschist facies and hydrothermally altered near the quartz lodes. We examined and sampled drill core from four prospects, Globe Progress, General Gordon, Merrijigs and Blackwater, to determine the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of hydrothermal alteration in the sandstone units. The sandstones are feldspathic litharenites averaging Q65, FlO and R25, with detrital grains of quartz, feldspar, rock fragments, muscovite, biotite (mostly altered to chlorite), and trace quantities of graphite, apatite, zircon, tourmaline and titanite. Hydrothermal alteration has developed a secondary mineral assemblage of K-mica (muscovite, sericite and illite), carbonate, chlorite, pyrite, arsenopyrite and limonite. The abundance of secondary chlorite is greater at Blackwater than at the other locations studied. Features in the sediments associated with increasing hydrothermal alteration towards quartz lodes include, the development and increasing intensity of colour bleaching and carbonate spotting, increasing quantities of disseminated pyrite and arsenopyrite, and the appearance and increasing quantity and size of thin carbonate, quartz and sulphide veins. This is accompanied by increasing concentrations of sulphur, arsenic and antimony as shown in assays, and of volatiles (loss on ignition) and iron as seen in XRF analyses. We were unable to identify consistent trends in the behaviour of potassium, sodium, and calcium that are exhibited by similar mesothermal quartz lode deposits inVictoria, Australia.

Freeport Exploration initiated regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the Republic of Indonesia in 1990 (see figure 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work which totaled 2.6 million hectares (6.4 million acres) and was subsequently awarded additional?concessions which added 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments Freeport?s current land position totals l. 9 million hectares (4.7 million acres).

In 1993 after over 110 years of mining operations, production ceased at the Broken Hill North Mine. Following the cessation of operations a rehabilitation program was developed to satisfy the requirements of the various government departments. This program has been implemented progressively since mine closure. The paper will discuss: primary aims and objectives of the rehabilitation program, implementation of the program, rationale behind rehabilitation objectives, and problems encountered in implementation of the program. To-date the primary rehabilitation of the mine has involved the capping of redundant tailing dams with inert waste rock to prevent the contamination of the receiving environment. A Water Management Plan has been developed to contain all run-off from the mine area in an extreme storm event. A cultural heritage assessment of the leases has been undertaken to ensure the rehabilitation is consistent with the historical significance of the site and community expectations. All redundant material from the mine has been sold in a æno reserveÆ auction and the workshop area has been relocated to the Southern operations. At present the only active areas on the mine are a maintenance area for equipment for the Potosi open pit, and a primary crusher for Potosi ore which is railed to the Southern operations for further processing. Upon completion of the rehabilitation program, Pasminco Broken Hill Mine intends to relinquish the mining leases to the Department of Mineral Resources.

The applicability of Bieniawski and Hoek-Brown empirical strength criteria has been assessed for different groups of coal and various types of intact rocks by using a vast number of published triaxial test data from various places. Analysis of individual data sets revealed that the traditional forms of the criteria do not have a perfect agreement with the data. A strong negative correlation has been observed between B in Bieniawski's criterion and m in Hoek and Brown's criterion with uniaxial compressive strength of materials. Both criteria have been modified and empirical relationships have been introduced for coal as follows:m = 62.903 - 34.213 (log pc) 0.9772B = 10.152 - 4.709 (log pc )0.8889Similar relationships have been developed for different rock types as well.A comparison between the applicability of each of the above approaches with the conventional criteria reveals a very significant advantage for new approaches and a supremacy for the Bieniawski criterion in all cases particularly in the case of coal.The modified Bieniawski criterion fits coal as well as different types of rocks with excellent accuracy.The modified Hoek-Brown criterion gives a good result for rocks but does not fit coal data quite well. In other words, Hoek-Brown criterion is not an suitable one for coal.

Colliery spoil is the major constituent of colliery spoil ærockpasteÆ which has been used to infill abandoned limestone mines in the West Midlands of England since the early-1980s. The other constituents of rockpaste are pulverised fuel ash, lime and water. A key property of the rockpaste is its ability to flow within the mine workings over considerable distances before setting. This paper describes the work carried out to identify suitable sites as sources of colliery spoil for making rockpaste and goes onto consider the flow properties of the material and the monitoring methods used on-site. A full-scale trial comprising infilling a 6600 m3 section of an abandoned mine was conducted prior to the infilling of the Littleton Street Mine which had a volume of about 500 000 m3. As well as describing the methods used for monitoring the movement of rockpaste material, a description is also given of a dip-meter developed specifically for the purpose of measuring the level of paste in the mine. This paper shows how a colliery spoil based paste has been successfully used for infilling abandoned mine workings. The monitoring systems developed for use in the two case studies presented in this paper are now being used extensively for infilling other abandoned mine workings. To-date over 11 mines with a total volume exceeding two million cubic metres have been backfilled.

Dartbrook (Hunter Valley and South Bulli (Southern Coalfield) Collieries provide contrasting settings for gas sorption studies. Gas compositions at Dartbrook are dominated by carbon dioxide, with minor methane, while those at South Bulli are dominated by methane with minor carbon dioxide. Total gas contents at Dartbrook are also significantly greater than those at South Bulli. The two collieries are also contrasted in terms of coal composition and mining environment. Dartbrook Colliery mines a relatively small sectionb(4m) of very thick seam (up to mapproximately25m); the coal is vitrinite-rich, high volatile bituminous. South Bulli mines most of the seam thickness, with coal being an intertinite-rich, medium volatile bituminous coal.Coal samples have been collected from in-seam gas drainage holes for evaluation of relative gas desorption rate (methane versus carbon dioxide). Following adsorption isotherms, petrography, chemistry (proximate and ultimate analysis) and pore structure analysis (carbon dioxide surface area, mercury porosimetry). Bomb desorption studies indicate different behaviours for methane desorption at these two collieries desorbed gas compositions at South Bulli show a small enrichment in methane content. The opposite is observed at Dartbrook. Both collieries show enrichment in CO2 in the residual content. Adsorption studies show marked variation in adsorbed gas contents for methane and carbon dioxide at each colliery and between collieries. These variations are related to differences in coal pore structure, chemistry and Petrology.
