The goal of the project reported in this paper was to make recommendations for changes in roof bolting procedures and bolter design that would reduce roof bolter accident rates. To that end the project identified the major hazards associated with each task a roof bolter operator per-forms, normalized task accident frequencies. by the time spent on each task, reviewed equipment design features and operating procedures related to the identified hazards and developed recommendations for equipment and procedural changes that would reduce, if not eliminate, the hazards. The research steps completed during the project were: a. A review of related literature and re-search including roof bolting time studies b. The collection and analysis of 1975 accident data pertaining to roof bolter activities c. The normalization of the accident frequency data on the basis of time/task data d. A review of roof bolting equipment e. The development of a field data collection instrument f. The selection of mines for bolter observations g. The collection of field data h. Scorodite samples were synthesized, in adding or without crystal seed respectively by using Atmospheric Scorodite Process (ASP), Hydrothermal Scorodite Process (HSP), and Improved Atmospheric Scorodite Process (IASP) individually; and their crystal structure, crystallinity, morphology, particle size, specific surface area, Fe/As mole ratio, as well as the leaching stability were characterized, aimed to reveal the relationships among the synthesis methods, the compositional and structural properties, and the leaching stabilities of scorodite. The results show that synthesis methods have significant effects on the compositional and structural properties of scorodite. Scorodite samples of high crystallinity, small specific surface area, and low Fe/As mole ratio, possess high leaching stability. The order in the leaching stability of scorodite samples synthesized in this study is as follow: ASP<HSP<IASP. Scorodite particles in the sample synthesized by IASP without crystal seed are in large sizes and of pyramidal morphology enclosed mainly by crystal planes of {111}; and the sample possesses the crystallinity of 84.5%, the particle size (D50) of 28.2 m, the BET specific surface area of 3.72 m2/g, and the Fe/As mole ratio of 1.05; after leaching this sample by using acetate buffer solution of pH 4.95 for 10 days, the total arsenic concentration in the leaching solution is merely 1.14 mg/L.

NO industry or group of industries is more deeply interested in the influence exerted by atmospheric dust than that concerned with the getting of coal and of metalliferous ores. The coal miner in the past has mainly been interested on account of the part played by coal dust in the occurrence of explosions; but investigation is revealing that coal miners experience, at least on certain coal fields, unduly high mortality ascribed to lung diseases, some part of which may reasonably be attributed to dust inhalation, and that a small group of men employed in sinking shafts and driving roads through sandstone rocks experience troubles identical with those that afflict many metalliferous miners. Coal Mining The Registrar General for England and Wales issues information every 10 years concerning the mortality experienced in various industries. The records dealing with coal mining are of particular interest, since they are given separately for each of the largest fields. When examined they exhibit the coal miner with a favorable death rate on the whole when compared with all other occupied males; but they reveal great differences on the different fields; thus the Lancashire miner in 1900-2 had a comparative mortality from all causes of 1006 as against a figure of 675 for the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire miners, and in 1910-12 of 941 as against 570 for Nottinghamshire. When mortalities due to four only of the great causes of death are subtracted from the total the differences are greatly reduced; these four causes are phthisis, pneumonia, bronchitis and accidents. Thus for 1910-12 more than one-half of the mortality in Lancashire, 478 out of 941, is so accounted for, but less than one-third of the mortality in Nottinghamshire, 184 out of 570; the latter fraction compares with that for all males, 293 out of 790. Exactly why the accident mortality varies thus with those for the lung diseases has not been determined; the fact, however, points to an interesting association between health and so-called "accidental" occurrences.

SINCE the publication of Prof. J. W. Richards&apos;s paper on The Schumacher Briquetting Process,2 this process has been in operation on a practical .scale in two plants in the United States, and a few notes on the results obtained may he of interest. An experimental plant, consisting of a toggle press and a hydraulic press, was installed at Johnstown, Pa., together with the necessary bins and other equipment, and an attempt was made to briquette a mixture of Mahoning fines and blast, furnace flue dust, in a ratio of 7 parts of ore to 3 parts of dust. The results were unsatisfactory, in that the briquettes made were not hard enough to stand the severe handling to which they were subjected in the various transferences necessary between the press and the furnace. The trouble was clue to several causes: First, the mechanical arrangement of the plant, which did not lend itself to a proper hardening and loading of the briquettes into the cars. Second, the irregular composition of the flue dust, as to both its lime and its fine coke contents. Third, the variability of the moisture content of the ore, and its viscosity when wet. Fourth, the ratio of fine ore to flue dust; that is, it was attempted to bind in too large a quantity of fine ore for the small amount of flue dust used. The first trouble could be overcome, and has been improved upon in the plant as it stands to-day. The second trouble was important, because of the small amount of dust used as a binder, and might have been easily removed by mixing the flue dust of the different furnaces, which, however, was never done. The third difficulty was more serious, but could have been partly solved, had it been possible to meet this along with the fourth difficulty, by decreasing the percentage of ore in the briquettes. It was proposed to do this, but it seems that the problem at the works in question is, primarily, to prepare Mahoning fines for reduction in the blast furnace, and only secondarily to use up the flue dust, and a solution along this line did not seem to be interesting.

Some of the negative impacts of carbon addition on the strength of castables are yet to be overcome in order to fulfill its potential benefits for oxidation resistance. This paper reports the results of recent studies conducted at CIREP on the effects of different types of carbon additives on the thermo-mechanical properties of magnesia-based castables. Experimental techniques included measurements of the hot modulus of rupture (HMOR), hot modulus of elasticity (HMOE), as well as the wedge-splitting test (WST). The comparison of evolving microstructures was carried out employing scanning electron microscopy with microanalysis attachment (SEM/EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). HMOR values of 12 MPa at 1300°C have been reached in MgO-Si02-C castables containing up to 7% carbon.

A numerical study of the developing fluid flow and thermal aspects during the staning phase of aluminum continuous casting processes is presented. The deforming finite element method, coupled with a quasi-Lagrangian formulation, is used to represent the growth of an ingot and the dynamic fluid flow and thermal behavior that evolves in the growing ingot. The mathematical formulation of the problem and the numerical treatment are discussed. The algorithm solves the free moving nodes as part of total unknowns with an automatic time step control for time integration. This permits an optimal computing efficiency while still keeping the computational errors under control. A selection of the results obtained using the algorithm is presented. The results are concerned with the evolution of fluid flow, temperature and solidification phenomena during a DC round ingot casting process, as it evolves from the beginning of casting operation to a steady state. These results show that the time-varying, complex fluid flow and thermal phenomena during continuous casting processes can be very well represented by the computational algorithm. The results also illustrate that, during the casting process, ~e fluid flow and temperature fields change drastically at the initial stage but evolve slowly afterwards

"INTRODUCTION The determination of moisture in coal is an empirical test, because the time, temperature, and equipment are specified. The essential features of the equipment, and details of the procedure are given in A.S.T.M. Designation: D271-44 5/. According to the specifications, the following features should be incorporated in the equipment used:1. Oven must have uniform temperature in all parts.2. Oven must be constructed with minimum of air space.3. Oven must have means of changing the air two to four times per minute.4. Air must be dried over sulfuric acid (sp. gr. 1.84).The analytical procedures governing most of the nation's coal purchases are those given in A.S.T.M. Standards referred to above. These standards are general and of such scope as to cover all ranks and types of coal. In cases where only the moisture is required, a faster method than the standard procedure is desired.The semi-automatic moisture tester manufactured by the Brabender Corp. has proved itself in many industrial processes where the rapid estimation of moisture is of vital importance. With the approval of A. C. Fieldner, chairman, A.S.T.M. Committee D-5, and through the courtesy of Lowell Malan, chief chemist, United Electric Coal Companies, who loaned the tester, tests were made to determine the feasibility of using this instrument to determine the moisture in coal."

Because of the risk of corrosion caused by stray currents, steel foundations and steel sheet piling are generally prohibited in the vicinity of railway structures. Steel solutions are only accepted if they are shown to meet the required design working life and if this can be achieved at an acceptable cost compared to competing materials. The influence of stray currents on various steel sheet piling designs was studied using software initially dedicated to gas and pipeline industries and cathodic protection systems. It has been successfully adapted to model stray currents affecting steel sheet piling. Corrosion rates assessed using this modeling software were considerably lower than commonly expected. Zones of potential corrosion risk were identified; specific cost-effective countermeasures could be established. The developed software tool can help to optimize the design of piling solutions in the vicinity of DC railway power systems in terms of suitable countermeasures that meet structural reliability and cost requirements.

The electrolytic copper refining process is an excellent method for producing high-purity metal for electric conductors and other demanding applications. However, the process involves very high capital expenditure, especially the amounts of metals bound in the process. Efforts have therefore been made for many years to increase the production rate by increasing the current density, without impairing the quality of the copper. One of the approaches has been to diminish the polarization by mechanical means, while another was to "polish" the cathode surface by periodic brief reversals of the current. Reversed current electrolysis was first developed for electro- plating purposes and in 1952 Boliden AB and the Dept. of Electrochemistry at the Royal Inst. of Tech., Stockholm tested the method for copper refining with good results. However, no suitable electrical equipment for current reversal was then available. The thyristor-controlled silicon rectifier became available during the &apos;60s and provided the scope for industrial application of the process and the first large-scale development was made by the Bulgarian copper refinery in Pirdop. Many copper refineries are now studying or adapting the reverse current process. Further lab and pilot investigations have been carried out at Boliden AB during the past 4 years and these were mainly aimed at studying the optimization of factors influencing the quality of copper. A production unit containing two tank sections with a total of 56 cells and equipped with a rectifier for cur- rent reversal has been installed and will be started during 1973.

Outokumpu Mintec started development of the pressure filter in 1991, and the first unit was delivered to Tara Mines Ltd. Ireland in 1992. The filter replaced a conventional disc filter and a thermal dryer. The replacement of the thermal dryer has improved both environmental and working conditions. The filter is currently dewatering 80,000 tons per year of lead concentrate, producing a cake with less than 6 wt % residual moisture.

The Vale Ferro Carajßs S11D project in northern Brazil is based on the movement of unprecedented volumes of waste and ore for mobile in-pit crushing and conveying or ætrucklessÆ systems. In peak years, the system is intended to handle a combined 160 Mt of material.The planning and implementation of the first such system for Vale, in a remote greenfield site, utilising the services of a range of international study, design and supply partners has provided a unique set of technical and project delivery challenges. The lessons from these are of value to the industry as the trend to remote and high-volume operations continues.This paper describes the key features of the mining system and documents the challenges and mitigations for important technical, cultural and project delivery issues that have arisen. "Concepts of an integrated steel plant for sheet products to be built and operating in the year 2000 will be described. The design and operating methodology of this market driven facility will integrate process uniqueness, standardization, manufacturing automation, artificial intelligence and information flow.An integrated steel plant for the year 2000 is defined for this article as one that will be built on a greenfield site and ""started up"" in the year 2000 with a capacity of three million tons per year of flat rolled products ranging from cold rolled and electrical steels to high strength formable steels and a full range of coated products.It may seem that the 21st century and the steel plant we're discussing are far into the future. The startling truth, however, is quite the opposite. As shown in Figure 1, even with accelerated development, a new process on which laboratory development work is begun today might just barely pass through the laboratory phase, pilot plant, and commercial feasibility stages such that it can be considered viable for construction and start up in the year 2000.On that basis, it is very unlikely that this 21st century steel plant will utilize any technology that isn't at least under investigation in the laboratory in 1988. As a result, we recognize that planning and selecting the facilities for this plant is, in fact, a pragmatic rather than futuristic process, and that its main value is in providing a bridge to longer-term predictions."

Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name II Sp 1 it Sets&apos;" have been under research and development by the author and the Ingersoll-Rand Company since February of 1973. The United States Bureau of Mines and the Mines Enforcement and Safety Administration as well as many mining companies have cooperated in field testing the device. Split Set rock anchors are distinctively different from the widely used mechanical rock anchors or fully grouted rock anchors. They control ground movement internally in a manner that allows controlled deformation during the early phase of the ground reaction curve but then, as secondary creep develops, anchorage per unit length increases and they serve to strengthen and stabilize the opening for long periods of time. The history of research and development of the Scott Split Set rock anchor system with accompanying laboratory and field test data is presented in this paper.

"Production of electrolytic copper is characterized by large volumes of acidic spent solutions the utilization of which requires considerable expenditures of neutralizing agents. At present, an economically substantiated technology does not exist for treatment of sulfuric acid rinse solutions and spent copper electrolyte which will allow for repeated use of the acid and the metal salts. Therefore, for this aim the most advantageous is the use of electromembrane methods. In the paper there is stated the essence of developed technologies which are distinguished by low waste and provide the extraction from the solutions of metallic copper, nickel and sulphuric acid. There are also considered methods of copper electrolyte processing allowing to regulate its composition by that or another component (H2S04, Cu, Ni, As).On the base of the detailed study of the behaviour of various types of ion- exchanger membranes in copper-, nickel-, zinc-, arsenic- bearing sulphate solutions there is realized the selection of the most suitable membranes (MK -401, MA-411, MB-2 and MKL-l/MAL-2).Some variants of electro membrane processing of spent solutions of the hydrometallurgy process have passed productions tests on a number of copper-electrolyte enterprises of the countries of CIS (cooperation of Independent States). These tests showed high efficiency of developed methods."

The human element in large measure dictates success in contracting relationships. Because of our professional backgrounds, we view contracts primarily as either engineers, contractors or owners. A beneficial contractual environment--one in which decisions, risks and benefits are shared--demands equal consideration of all three points of view. Most of the older cities in the United States, for example, suffer from bad contracts--generalized, patched-together documents that represent an accumulation of modifications originally written to compensate for specific situations that have occurred over the years. Because such documents lack coherence, they often present conflicting instructions which lead to defensive, ultimately destructive attitudes among the parties involved in the day-to-day administration of the project. Good contract development begins with a strong central philosophy to which the details of the contract can be related. First, the owner should establish a comprehensive philosophy in which risks between the parties are identified. Following this, a specific contract document can be written to satisfy this established philosophy. The contrast between two opposed contractual situations, NYC Water Tunnel Number Three and the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant Cooling Water Tunnels, illustrates how comprehensive, well-written contracts--contracts which share both risks and benefits--provide the basis for achieving quality construction that will reward engineer, contractor and owner.

Lowering of filter cake moisture of ultra-fine coal to a 20 percent level using conventional vacuum filtration could be achieved using a combination of metal ion and surfactants. Pretreating coal slurry with about 0.2 Kg/ton of a surfactant and 50 ppm of copper or 10 ppm of aluminum ions provided filter cake containing 22.8 percent moisture. The lowering of moisture is explained due to formation of hydrophobic micro-agglomerates which facilitates dewatering.
