Volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits are generally considered to have been formed by hydrothermal fluids that leach ore metals out of footwall rocks. However, the necessity for a metal-rich magmatic component in the ore-forming fluid of "giant" ore deposits has been debated over the decades. The solution to this issue is important not only for metallogenic models but also for the mineral exploration. In the hydrothermal leaching model, massive sulfides at mid-ocean ridges are deposited from hydrothermal fluids containing 80 ppm Fe, 6 ppm Zn, 2 ppm Cu, 350oC, and 0.7 g/cm3 density (average data for 21oN East Pacific Rise). A simple calculation demonstrates that such a dilute fluid is unlikely to have been responsible for the formation of the largest ancient massive sulfide ores of greater than 100x106 tonnes, such as Kidd Creek, Brunswick No. 12, Neves Corvo, and Rio Tinto. For such a deposit consisting primarily of pyrite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite (other minerals, including gangue, might account for an additional 10-20%) and even assuming 100% precipitation and retention of the sulfides, more than 790 km3 of vent fluid would be required. For typical water-rock reaction ratios of about 2, this fluid would have to have reacted with about 395 km3 of rock to acquire its metals by conventional leaching processes. This estimate, however, conflicts with the observation that even a giant massive sulfide ore body is usually underlain only by a few cube kilometers of obviously altered rocks. Moreover, this model is not consistent with the observation of hanging wall alteration in many large massive sulfide deposits. The close spatial association between massive sulfides and volcanic rocks, in both ancient and modern sea floors, suggests that direct magmatic contribution should be taken into account in the genetic model. Magmatic fluids, capable of carrying abundant ore metals and volatiles and escaping from magma by depressurization, are well known from modern active volcanoes on land. High concentrations of metals occur in CO2-rich magmatic fluid trapped in felsic volcanic rocks nearby large presently-forming VMS deposits in the eastern Manus Basin (Pacmanus, Suzette) and also in the footwall rocks of Ordovician giant Brunswick #12 deposit in the Bathurst district, New Brunswick. Only 1% of such metal-rich magmatic fluid mixed with heated sea water, that has leached its metals from rocks, would contribute 85% of the total metals to form an orebody. Such magmatic fluids are most likely to be formed from volatile-rich felsic magmas that are prevalent in back arcs, and, if added to the normal circulation system, the fluids could be responsible for the formation of "giant" ore deposits. If this is true, then the study of magmatic fluids in the seafloor volcanic rocks may provide criteria for the exploration of large ore deposits.

Kennecott recently completed an $880 million modernization and expansion of its smelter and refinery to process all concentrates from the Bingham Canyon mine. This is the first application of Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting. Molten material movement by overhead cranes is eliminated and high levels of oxygen enrichment result in very low process gas volumes and exceptionally control of sulfur oxide emissions. All existing in-plant hygiene, safety, and environmental regulations will be met and the smelter is positioned for anticipated more stringent future regulations. Sulfur capture is 99.9 percent resulting in sulfur dioxide emissions less than the 112 kg/hr Air Permit limit, making the smelter the cleanest in the world.

This is the story of the Carlton Mill. But first-a little geography. For those who do not know where the Carlton Mill is, or, perhaps, have only a vague idea, its location is indicated in Figure 1. The plant is situated on the road between the two old mining towns of Cripple Creek and Victor, 10 the west of Colorado Springs. From Denver, it's about 110 miles by road. The story of the Carlton Mill began with the discovery of gold at Cripple Creek in 1890. This discovery set off a major boom such that, by the turn of the century, there were 450 separate operating mines in the district. Gold production boomed early and declined rather rapidly as indicated by the graph in Figure 2. Significant factors affecting production are shown on the graph-the raising of the gold price in 1934 from $20.67 to $35.00 per ounce and the government executive order L-208 in 1942 requiring the closure of all gold mines.

The world's production of petroleum during 1926 is estimated at 1,096,000,000 bbl., an increase of about 29,000,000 from that of 1925 and somewhat larger than the average during the last 4 years, which is about 1,049,000,000 bbl. The daily average during the year may be estimated at 3,000,000 bbl. of which the United States produced 2,123,000 and other countries 877,000. The outstanding developments during the year have been the decline of the Mexican fields, the counterbalancing of this decline by the increase in Venezuelan and Russian production, and increases in Roumania and Colombia. During 1926 the United States, Mexico and Russia retained their relative positions as the three leading producers, while Venezuela probably outranked Persia for fourth place, Roumania passed Dutch East Indies for sixth, and Colombia moved from sixteenth to the eleventh position. It further appears that should present conditions develop normally throughout 1927, it is not improbable that Mexico will be outranked by Russia as the second oil-producing country and that the increased yield of Colombia will place this country in the eighth or ninth position, and ahead of India. The United States and Mexico should produce in 1926 about 79 per cent. of the world's total and the aggregate of the seven leading countries should be close to 95 per cent. of the total. It is interesting to note that about 85 per cent. of the total comes from fields on the American continent, the United States accounting for about 71 per cent., and Spanish-American countries and Trinidad for 13 per cent. Production of countries other than the United States and Mexico has gradually increased during the last four years and now represents about 21 per cent. of the total. The United States easily retains its long standing leadership with a total yield of 775,000,000 bbl., or an average daily yield of 2,123,000, representing about 71 per cent. of the total, which is about equal to that of the previous year. An increase in production of about 11,000,000 bbl. is indicated by the statistics so far available. In 1991, roofbolts were introduced as a primary support for inseam retreat longwall entries at CBDC's Phalen Colliery. Increasing mine depth (+550 m) necessitated replacing conventional inseam steel sets in these entries because they were being severely damaged during wall retreat and subsequently causing gate end problems. Roofbolts had been used in the Sydney coalfield between 1949 and 1963 in room and pillar working, however, some concerns arose with using roofbolts as a primary support in long (2.2 - 3.4 km) single entry roadways. In order to alleviate these concerns, a phased approach was adopted whereby conventional steel densities remained along with roofbolts. The roofbolt design was such that the roofbolts would be the primary support and the steel sets would experience little or no loading. A detailed geotechnical monitoring program was developed by both CBDC and the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratories technical staffs. The results of this monitoring were used to build-up confidence in roofbolts and subsequently reduce the steel set densities until eventually only roofbolts were used as a primary support. This paper will discuss briefly the phased introduction of rootbolts at Phalen Colliery and more specifically the development of geotechnical data collection and interpretation.

INTRODUCTION Additional work has been done on the CIP circuit at Creede, and a brief description of this work is presented in this paper. DREDGE The original dredge for the Bulldog was built by Al Hack, Inc. of Denver. The dredge cutter head is mounted on a boom made of 6-inch diameter pipe which is raised and lowered by a cable-pulley system. Maximum cutting depth is 8 feet. Slurry from the dredge flows through a floating 6-inch diameter pipe supported on 55-gallon drums which runs from the dredge to the shore and then to a trash screen and pumping system. See Figures 1 and 2. The cutter head, suction pump, winches for dredge movement, and all other operations are controlled from a small operations house located toward the rear of the dredge. All of the basic dredge equipment is mounted on a chassis about 8 ft x 16 ft in size. Additional buoyancy was originally provided by sealed 55-gallon drums supported along the sides of the chassis by a small wooden framework. Additional framework and barrels on the front of the chassis on either side of the cutter boom provided additional stability, particularly when digging in hard material. The dredge was quite stable, but two problems were apparent. For one, it could have been sunk by someone from the shore firing a rifle into all of the barrels. In a continuing effort to improve plant efficiency, United States Steel's Atlantic City Ore Operations completed the rubber lining of its balling drums in late 1982. This resulted in benefits of reduced bentonite consumption, reduced maintenance costs, improved production rates, and lower power consumption. These advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of increased oversize production and increased surging on the roll screen sizing devices. Certain operating characteristics and variables are discussed herein.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. It is proposed to give, first, a description of the works; second, a report of the first six months of the present blast; and third, such improvements as have been suggested by the practical working. The site selected for this furnace was, at the time of commencing work, October, 1872, entirely covered by the navigable waters of Lake Champlain. A coffer-dam was first built of cribs of round timber filled with stone, forming three sides, while the shore answered for the fourth. Considerable excavating was done with a steam-dredge, a hole being left for it to pass out. The opening was then built up, and the cribbing banked up with blue clay from the bottom of the lake, to render it water-tight and the dam pumped out; the remainder of the excavating being done by hand. All of the foundations, with the exception of the elevator-tower, and fifteen feet of the east side of hot blast, rest on the Potsdam sandstone, which forms the shore line, dipping into the lake at an angle of fifteen degrees. Phosphate rock is a naturally occurring mineral which, in upgraded form, is important to both agriculture and industry. Phosphate rock normally must be upgraded before it can be assimilated and used. Most of this upgrading is now carried out by chemical means, largely through the reaction of a strong inorganic acid (primarily sulfuric acid) with the phosphate rock to remove major impurities and to produce soluble phosphate. A less important but yet still commercially significant conversion method involves the thermal reduction of phosphate rock at high temperature in an electric furnace to produce elemental phosphorus. The elemental phosphorus is then converted to usable end products. This conversion route is a more costly method than the chemical route, but it has the advantage of being able to produce chemically pure phosphorus derivatives. On the other hand, the use of phosphate rock for agricultural application-primarily for use as a plant nutrient ingredient for fertilizer -does not require the same level of purity. As a consequence, the chemical method of phosphate rock upgrading is the predominant technique for producing phosphatic fertilizers.

The operating mine is dynamic, everchanging, and a continuous moving target. The only way to effectively manage such a creature is to be able to evaluate the cost of operation over short enough time periods that rapid effective controls can be implemented before loss can erode the marginal profits in todays market place. Such short term evaluations can provide the basis for the long range planning that can keep an operation healthy in the future. The spreadsheet programs on small computers (PC's) offer the possibility of such evaluation by accumulating data in a useable format, providing timely cost reporting and providing a tool for use in evaluating the day to day alternative choices of the real mining world.

Barrick' s Buzwagi copper-gold deposit in Tanzania comprises oxide, saprock and sulphide mineralized zones averaging approximately 0.058oz/t gold, 0.13% total copper and 0.03% cyanide-soluble copper. A comparative evaluation of the project based on two potential flowsheet alternatives is presented. The first flowsheet included a gravityconcentration and carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant. The second flowsheet was based on a Gravity-Flotation-CIL plant, which proved to be more economically robust. Selective flotation of copper minerals to produce a saleable copper concentrate proved to be challenging. Detailed characterization of the Buzwagi deposit was carried out through understanding of ore mineralogy, mineral liberation, floatability and selectivity, reagent chemistry and regrinding issues. With this insight, a flotation concentrate of greater than 25% Cu was achieved, recovering a significant amount of copper minerals and tellurides. The overall economics of the project improved significantly with the addition of flotation. Leach tests on gravity and flotation tailings showed an overall increase in gold recovery of approximately 6% for a Gravity-Flotation-CIL plant compared to that for a Gravity-CIL plant.

Current studies, and analysis of previouslypublished data, have lead to a re-evaluation of the inclusion of the North D'Aguilar block within the "Gympie Province" in southeast Queensland. The metamorphic rocks are part of a Late Devonian(?)-Early Carboniferous subduction accretionary complex and are unconformably overlain by volcanic and coarse-grained clastic rocks of probable Early or mid-Permian age, as well as by Early to middle Triassic rocks of the Esk Rift. Metamorphic fabrics in the basement rocks include not only those that can be related to convergence, but also younger fabrics that may have developed during Late Carboniferous or Permian uplift and unroofing of the accretionary rocks. A predominance of basic schists, some of which are blue amphibole-bearing, and associated fine-grained pelagic and hemipelagic sediments in the Northern D'Aguilar block contrast with the siliciclastic-dominated sediments of most of the accretionary complexes of the New England Orogen. However the similarity of structural style, and metamorphic and igneous history, with adjacent basement blocks, and with other blocks throughout the New England orogen, suggests that the North D'Aguilar block simply represents deeper, probably underplated, levels of the same subduction complex. Uplift and cooling may have been accomplished by extensional faulting during Permian inception of the Esk rift, which flanks the block on the west.

Today's competitive international commodity markets demand superior efficiency which requires systematic involvement of people in continual improvement of production and commercial processes. True Total Quality of Management (True TQM) principles provide an operating philosophy for maximising productivity and minimising unit costs of output. The presentation will show the practical and successful use of these principles. This paper will introduce the case study and provide background material on True TQM.

The plant is designed to produce 60,000+ tons of refined lead per year from a nominal feed consisting of 110,000 tons of SLI and industrial batteries, and 10,000 tons of lead contained in drosses and scrap. The plant will also produce as by-products polypropylene chips and detergent grade sodium sulfate, using the Engitec Impianti CX Technology. The battery separation circuit will consist of a battery breaking hammermill and a vibrating screen with water sprays to separate the battery paste from the grid metal and other battery components. The battery components, consisting of ebonite, and separator materials, will be separated' from the grid metal and classified with the use of hydrodynamic water separators. The battery paste will be treated with sodium carbonate to produce a lead carbonate paste for smelting in a reverberatory furnace. The slag from the reverberatory furnace will be campaigned through a traditional primary blast furnace to produce hard lead. The sodium sulfate liquor from the lead carbonate filtration step will be crystallized to produce anhydrous sodium sulfate. The metallic grid metal will be treated through a small rotary smelter of the Engitec design to produce a hard antimonial lead. The plant's scheduled to be commissioned 12 months after receipt of all of the Federal and state permits. The plant will be integrated into the Buick Primary Lead Smelter, located in the center of Missouri's New Lead Belt, at Boss, Missouri. This will allow The Doe Run company to fully utilize all of its existing assets.

One session of the annual meeting of the American Society of Civil Engineers-the first since this society became a Founder society with representation on the Board of the United Engineering Society-was held on Jan. 17, 1917, in the Engineering Societies' Building. Mr. Charles F. Rand, Past-President of this Institute, and President of the United Engineering Society, welcomed the new Founder society in the following words: "As one who has looked forward very earnestly to this clay, and who has made a modest effort in favor of the new arrangements, it is a peculiar satisfaction to be the representative of the Trustees of the United Engineering Society and to welcome you on the occasion of your first meeting in this building in which you now own' a quarter interest. "'As this is your annual meeting, I cannot take your time for extended remarks, yet it seems proper that I should call attention to a few facts respecting the United Engineering Society, with which you are now identified. "The United Engineering Society exists for the purpose of holding the legal title to certain of the property of the societies of Civil, Mining, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and to act for them in certain matters. "The value of its property, including real estate, the Library and the Reserve and Endowment funds, exceeds two million dollars, all free and clear. "The total membership of the four Founder societies is 29,000 and the membership of associate societies is 23,000, making a grand total of 52,000 engineers who now have headquarters in this building.

Alexander N. Winchell, Butte, Mont. (communication to the Secretary): Mr. Spurr calls attention to the fact that an ore-deposit may be due to a succession of concentrations at different geological epochs. He cites an example of such a condition on Napoleon creek, a branch of Forty-Mile creek, Alaska. It will perhaps be of interest to call attention to another example of the same general character, not so remotely situated. The example referred to is located on Pole creek, a tributary of Cherry creek, in the extreme northeastern part of Madison county, Montana. An excellent geological map of this region is to be found in the Three Forks folio (No. 24) of the United States Geological Survey. According to this map, Pole creek, in its upper course, occupies the contact between the " Flathead " formation, which Peale correlates with the Middle and Lower Cambrian, and an area of gneisses and schists supposed

In the world mining scene, precious metals (particularly gold) have recently monopolized the attention in exploration as well as new production activities. As the major world producer of gold, South Africa plays and will continue to play a very significant role in this commodity. This role will, of course, have its consequential effects on the world's gold supply and, hence, also on the international price of gold. It is essential, therefore, and in the interests of all gold producers that the likely future pattern of gold production in South Africa be estimated such that some measure of production uncertainties can be predicted. For this purpose, some elementary geostatistical models will be used, and the main factors affecting the situation will be analyzed in broad outline only under the following headings: South Africa's basic gold ore potential in the three categories of: (1) ore remaining in existing mines; (2) extensions to existing mines via unexplored areas and/or reef horizons of lower grade; and (3) new mines, potentially deep or ultradeep. Cutoff grades - operating, marginal, and flotation, for the foregoing three ore categories, respectively. The availability of production, financial, and other resources required. Cutoff grades will, of course, depend on cost levels (operating and capital), future inflation and cost escalation trends in South Africa (SA), and/or gold price trends (in US$ and via the exchange rate in SA Rand terms). The differentials in inflation and escalation trends with those in overseas countries, mainly the USA, will, in general, set the scene for future exchange rate levels of the Rand. To predict the effect of various cutoff grades on future gold production from South Africa, it is essential to use geostatistical models. The applicability of such models is tested against past records of price, cost, and grade trends and then applied to the estimated ore potentials. These models were referred to briefly in a paper at a recent seminar on gold (Krige, 1986) but are discussed in detail herein. This lecture was intended originally to cover only technical aspects, but, in view of South Africa's position internationally and the possible effect of sanctions, internal unrest, and strikes on gold production, a brief reference to the third factor above (availability of production, financial, and other resources) seems appropriate.
