"Several writers have called attention, in the technical press, to the possible failure of flame safety lamps in coal-dust laden atmospheres. Such writers question the safety or a flame lamp that has been proved only in atmospheres containing methane, believing that the resistance of the lamp to explosion would be lessened it coal dust constituted a part of the explosive mixture.If this be true, it follows that any series of tests devised to prove the safety of flame lamps for use in gaseous and dusty coal mines should not only embrace tests in mixtures containing various proportions of methane, but also in some of the tests the effect of adding coal dust to the explosive gaseous mixtures should be investigated.Some attention has been given this question by investigators, but the more common practice has been to make all tests in gas and air mixtures only, using methane when it was readily available. Apparently the English Accident Committee (1879-1886) who conducted tests upon 250 different lamps did not use coal dust in their tests. The first British requirements for the testing of safety lamps, issued as a result of the Coal Mine Act of 1911, made no mention of tests with coal duet.The Austrian Fire-damp Committee (1890) conducted a series of tests in which coal dust was used in some of the tests. In certain tests, the addition of coal dust apparently lowered the resistance of the lamp 1 meter per second. The Belgium investigators, Messrs. Watteyne and Stassart, conducted a series of tests in 1904 in which coal dust was used in a few tests without any marked difference in safety."

"The Ferderber mine consists of a series of Archean gold-bearing quartz lenses within a shear zone that crosscuts the central part of the quartz diorite Bourlamaque batholith. This zone has sharp contacts with the enclosing quartz diorite, and on average strikes N70E and dips 65SE. Along the contact with the shear zone, the quartz diorite is chloritized, sericitized and carbonatized. The chlorite schist within the zone is probably derived from mafic dykes.The geometry and distribution of structural features within the Ferderber shear zone suggest a long history of repeated movements. The majority of gold-bearing lenses were first emplaced during a probable early period of brittle shear which resulted from strike-slip movement. They were then folded and pulled into boudins by a later episode of reverse movement that accompanied ductile shear. New mineralized veins were emplaced in the shear zone and deformed at this time.Mineralized veins are dominated by quartz, carbonates, tourmaline and micas. Gold is more common within pyrite where chalcopyrite is abundant and is generally in contact with both pyrite and chalcopyrite at ""triple point"" grain junctions. This intimate association suggests that copper may have played an important role in gold deposition.Recent exploration has shown that the Bourlamaque batholith is cut by many parallel or en echelon shear zones. Study of ""Landsat"" and aerial photographs has indicated a number of linear structures striking ENE-WSW and ESE-WNW which form a conjugate system. The intersection of these two structural trends presents an interesting exploration target."

For a user interested in using the program as it exists, Sections B 2, B 5 and B 6 are particularly useful. The program listing (B.6) can be used to prepare a card deck and the data cards can be punched from the directions given in Section B. 2. Typical input data and output printout summarized in B 5 provides guidelines for the program use. Sections B 3 (Program Nomenclature) and B 4 (Subroutine Description) describe, in detail, the inner workings of the program and are particularly useful for a user interested in modifying the program.

"The operating cost of a gold mine employing granular activated carbon to recover gold can be greatly affected by the condition of in-circuit carbon and its attrition losses. To accurately identify and quantify carbon losses requires careful study. Carbon attrition in the mill can be attributed mainly to physical or mechanical breakage due to the transfer of carbon in the circuit and to carbon oxidation and thermal fracture occurring in the carbon reactivation kiln. Of the equipment involved in carbon transfer, the water powered eductors are the major cause of abrasion and should be replaced with pumps or alternate methods that can serve the purpose. This paper also reviews the impact of carbon stripping and washing on overall operations.IntroductionHolt-McDermott Mine operates a 1360 tonnes per day Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) mill to recover gold. The relatively high carbon consumption and high remaining gold values on carbon after stripping were viewed as a challenging project for research. Extensive metallurgical testwork was initiated to reduce these values. Figure 1 below indicates the carbon flowchart prior to any significant changes in the carbon handling procedures.Carbon consumption after commissioning which was as high as 10""/o of carbon eluted, has been brought down to less than 5%. Grade control (long term and short term) and the preparation of ore and waste removal schedules to maintain a uniform grade of mill feed. This also includes the calculation of metal reserves and metal production forecasts.7. Surveying, underground and surface.8. Operations research at the mine site.9. Industrial engineering.10. Chemical analyses and assays.11. Instrumentation.12. Environmental control.A staff of approximately 35 supervisors, engineers and scientists, and 80 technicians, supply the foregoing services. Consulting engineering and drafting firms are used to supply specialized services and technical personnel in-house at Timmins to handle overloads on capital projects under the direction of Ecstall engineers.The operating and maintenance departments depend on the engineering department to supply engineering, design and drafting services for any new facilities or for any planned alteration to existing facilities. To do this efficiently requires a high level of communication and co-operation with these departments. This has been a major factor in developing the present organization of the department shown in Figure 63.The organization is predicated on a strong central technical and engineering resource from which personnel can be assigned responsibilities for different projects, and in different areas, as the work load demands. Job satisfaction is very high because of the variety and challenge in the tasks. Additionally, participation in projects with production and maintenance personnel broadens each technical employee's knowledge of operating and maintenance problems."

The long-term outlook Tor Australla's traditional mining products is for flat demand and continuing low prices. This has come about because of three far-reaching changes since earlier boom days: 1. Continuing declines in intensity of usage of basic mine products; 2. The failure of newer western and third world developing countries to realise growth expectations; and 3. Continued production pressure from third world countries (and first-world primary producers) in an effort to earn foreign exchange and rectify trade balances. These trends have led to a general situation of excess supply and weak demand. In this environment, the prerequisites for survival in the mining sector are first-class mines, modern and efficient production methods, low unit costs, aggressive marketing, and products with reasonable operating margins. Many of Australia's mines meet these prerequisites. Following the A$ depreciation and widespread unit cost reductions, most of these mines will be moderately profitable at current depressed commodity prices. They are well placed to benefit from price rises if these eventuate. A new generation of mines is concentrating on a more profitable product range (gold, diamonds, uranium, mineral sands). Australia's balance of trade remains firmly dependent on the primary mining and agricultural industries (Fig. 1). Despite optimistic talk of high-tech developments, tourism and a resurgence of manufacturing, these will remain a small component of Australia's export structure.

"This paper describes the successful pilot plant testing of a flowsheet, developed at INCO Ltd.'s J.Roy Gordon Research Laboratory (JRGRL), for improved separation of the constituent minerals in a bulk copper nickel concentrate.The flowsheet utilized the fact that xanthate concentration on the mineral surfaces is the most important variable affecting the high lime separation and that reduction of the xanthate concentration could be effected by an oxidative conditioning stage.When the adsorbed xanthate was reduced to a suitably low level, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite could be floated to leave a high grade nickel concentrate as the residue. Sodium cyanide was added to the froth product to depress pyrrhotite and any remaining pentlandite. The temporary depression of chalcopyrite by the sodium cyanide was overcome by introducing a conditioning step following cyanide addition. The advantages of the flowsheet; improved copper-nickel separation, operation without heating of the pulp, production of both high grade nickel concentrate ( 29. 5% Ni, . 26% Cu) and copper concentrate ( <O. 5% Ni, 30% Cu) were all realized."

"The Orenada Zone 4 deposit is a small vein-type gold deposit occurring directly within the Cadillac Break southeast of Val d' Or in southeastern Abitibi Sub province. Mineralization is hosted by the Piche Group which, on the Orenada property, consists of talcchlorite- carbonate, chlorite-carbonate, and sericite-chlorite schists, derived from ultramafic volcanic, mafic igneous, and intermediate to felsic volcaniclastic rocks, respectively. All these rocks have been carbonatized.Rocks of the Pichi Group display a strong east-west, subvertical S1foliation, which is superimposed by asymmetric, intrafolial F2folds with shallow to moderate plunge to the east and to the west. F2folds are accompanied by an S2, subvertical axial planar cleavage, and are interpreted to result from dextral transcurrent shearing along sr.The Zone 4 deposit occurs within a large F2 fold, 60 m wide and plunging at 45 to the east, down to a depth of at least 300m. The auriferous zones consist essentially of zones of closely spaced, parallel quartz-tourmaline-albite-carbonate-arsenopyrite veins concordant to Sr these veins have been folded by the large F2fold and may pre-date the folding. A few discordant quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins, post- dating the F2 folding, also contain gold. Wallrocks adjacent to concordant veins have been carbonatized, albitized and contain significant amounts of tourmaline and arsenopyrite, with which gold is intimately associated.The Orenada Zone 4 deposit is a unique example of a deformed vein- type gold deposit, and exemplifies one of several types of association of lode gold deposits with folds."

Cominco Limited operates an integrated zinc-lead complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. Central to the successful operation of this complex is the treatment of zinc leach residues through the lead smelter. In 1997, Cominco started up a new lead smelter using KTVCET flash smelting, a state-of-the-art conventional slag fuming furnace, and a new drossing plant. The smelter has fully met the requirements for environmental performance, reduced energy consumption, and lowered labour costs. This paper provides a description of the new smelter and discusses the problems encountered during the start-up, as well as the solutions to those problems. Recent operating results are presented. Construction began in 1984 for a 5 megawatt hydroelectric power retrofit at the O'Shaughnessy Dam for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The construction necessitated excavation of limestone bedrock up to 27 feet below the normal water level of the river downstream of the dam. Proximity to the river and difficult terrain resulted in an interesting and challenging construction project.

Gulf Chemical and Metallurgical Corporation (GCMC) has been operating facility for treatment of spent catalysts in Freeport, Texas since 1974. Recently, GCMC expanded its operations with the addition of an electric furnace for the production of fused alumina and mixed alloys. GCMC and its affiliate Sadaci, started up a new pre-treatment facility in Ghent, Belgium in 1998. GCMC is also part owner of Bear Metallurgical Corporation, a major producer of ferroalloys in the United States. This paper reviews the processes at these facilities. Changes in the management of hydrotreating and hydrorefining spent catalysts are discussed in light of recently issued federal regulations that made the majority of spent catalysts a listed hazardous waste.

Edward S. Simpson, Perth, Western Australia (communication to the Secretary): In 1896 the East Coolgardie gold-field was divided into three fields, viz. : Area, square miles. Officia1 Centers. (1) East Coolgardie,. . 634 Kalgoorlie. (2) Broad Arrow,. , 588 Kurawa. (3) Northeast Coolgardie,. 22,960 Kanowna. The whole of the area embraced by the eastern gold-fields is covered with late Tertiary sands and gravel, with occasional beds of clay shales. These mostly overlay granite which occasionally shows through in small round hills. At Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and other mining centers, belts of diorite, serpentine and highly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks appear on the surface. The rainfall at Kalgoorlie in 1897 was 4.75 inches. That the climate has not always been so arid is evidenced by the recent discovery at Coolgardie (only twenty-five miles away) in the late Tertiary formations of a thick bed of brown coal, containing numerous fossil fern-leaves. As assayer and mineralogist to the Government of Western Australia I have had occasion to examine a large amount of the Kalgoorlie ores, both in Perth and at the mines at Boulder itself. "INTRODUCTIONDuring the last few years, through Column Flotation Company of Canada ltd, the Centre de Recherches minérales has worked on the column flotation of coal, phosphate, feldspar, talc, graphite, copper, lead-zinc and diamond ores. The operating companies and prospective deposits were located in Canada and in other countries. Since these projects were financed by the concerned mining companies, all results remain confidential unless we obtain permission to publish. Three companies have graciously allowed us to use their information which I will describe in this text. These are the Polkowice copper mine in Poland, the North Coast Industries ltd graphite deposit and a talc company which preferred to remain anonymous. I will also describe our 2 inch column which was used for all tests. Data is also given on how to scale-up the 2 inch column to industrial size.Figure 1 presents a schematic of a flotation column. Feed, at a controlled rate and pulp density, enters at about 1/4 of the height of the column from the top. A controlled rate of air is bubbled into the bottom of column through a fine-holed sparger. The column volume between the feed point and the top of the sparger is called the recovery zone. Tailings, at a controlled rate, always slightly greater than the feed rate, discharges from the bottom of the column. This difference in feed and tailings flowrates is called the bias. The floated mineral is carried through the recovery zone on air bubbles which rise into the cleaning zone which is that column volume between the feed point and the overflow at the top. As the bubbles rise in this zone they are washed of gangue material by wash water which enters over the top of the froth layer. The froth layer is maintained at a given depth during flotation but this depth will depend on the froth cleanliness, for quite a bit of cleaning by wash water is accomplished in this layer."

Examples of mill CI team projects and results are described. This paper describes practical experiences for those who are considering or are in the process of adopting a CI operating Philosophy.INTRODUCTIONCampbell Mine is 100% owned and operated by Placer Dome Canada Ltd. The mine is located in Balmertown, Ontario approximately 300 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Campbell Mine has produced over s,000,000 ounces of gold since commencing operation in 1949. The operation is profitable and continues to be a major contributor to the gold production of Placer Dome Inc.At Campbell Mine, the concept of Continuous Improvement (CI) is being implemented to make further improvements to safety, quality, productivity, and subsequently profits. CI is not a ""program"". It is a way of doing business that concentrates on improving the system rather than finding fault and being resigned to the status quo.CI focuses on involving all employees in the decision making process and tapping their expertise to improve every facet of the business. In the past, many solutions were simple ""band-aid"" fixes treating the symptom, only to see the problem resurface again. With CI, solutions endeavour to address the root cause of problems and eliminate them permanently. Another primary goal is to eliminate unilateral decisions that benefit a small group but have a negative effect on the whole system."

The Meikle Mine is a high-grade, underground gold mine that utilizes a primary and secondary stoping method with delayed backfill. The newly developed Rodeo Mine will start production using similar mining methods in late 2001. The combined production for the mines will be 4100 stpd of ore in 2002. Dilution of the secondary stopes resulting from blast induced overbreak of the backfill placed in the primary stopes was an issue identified as being a major contributor to the total mining cost at the Meikle Mine. To address the overbreak issue, a low-density, polystyrene enhanced bulk emulsion was developed and introduced to the mine. The density and energy of the emulsion was varied until an optimal level was reached. The use of a low-density bulk emulsion has greatly reduced the overbreak of the primary stope backfill when blasting the secondary stopes. Benefits to the mines include reduced secondary stope dilution, lowered total mining cost, and increased revenues.1

This paper describes the controlled blasting techniques required to mine a rock tunnel section of a main interceptor located in the Boston Metropolitan area. The 3m (10 ft) x 2.8m (9.25 ft) horseshoe shaped tunnel was driven 490m (1600 ft) by conventional drill and blast methods. The geology varied round by round and consisted of five highly faulted and jointed igneous rock types. The tunnel intersected numerous slickenslides and open mud seams which hampered both drilling and loading operations. Smooth blasting wee critical in order to keep overbreak tc a minimum in this extremely hard but blocky ground.

The resin-in-pulp (RIP) ion exchange process was originally conceived by the Atomic Energy Commission in the early 1950&apos;s. However it was developed to commercial success by the Anaconda Co. at its 3000-tpd ore processing mill in Grants, N. M. Essentially, the Anaconda mill&apos;s crushing, grinding and acid leaching operations are the same as at the nearby Kerr-McGee mill, except that Anaconda uses manganese dioxide instead of sodium chlorate as oxidant during acid leaching. The real differences between the two mills become evident when considering how Anaconda treats its leached materials.

Committed to a sustainable development of zinc applications, Union Miniere is investigating processes for the minimisation of waste and residues originating from the classic hydrometallurgical zinc process. In that context, Union Miniere has developed a method for the cold inertisation and solidification of goethite, the Graveliet® process. The result is a hard and inert gravel that can be used in the building industry. During the past two years, a pilot plant for the production of Graveliet® has been built and operated. In the present paper, the Graveliet® process and the pilot plant are described after which the properties of the produced gravel are discussed, from both a mechanical and an environmental point-of-view. Graveliet fulfils the criteria for use as a secondary building material. The GravelietJ process is a viable technology to avoid stockpiling of goethite residues and it thus assures the long-term development of the hydrometallurgical zinc process.
