"The O'Brien mine is in the west-central part of Cadillac township along the Cadillac 'break', which extends for 7,500 feet from west to east across the property.The ground was staked in 1924 by A. Dumont and W. Hermeston, prospecting for M. J. O'Brien, Limited. The first vein discovered is that now known as No. 1. The No. 4 vein was later exposed on the surface; the other veins known to be present were revealed by underground work and diamond drilling carried out both from the surface and underground.The mine is developed from three vertical shafts: No .. 2 extending from the surface to 2,000 feet; No. 3 from the surface to 1,500 feet; and No. 4 from 2,000 to 3,000 feet. There is on the property a mill of about 200 tons a day capacity, the usual shops, and a townsite housing about forty-five families. Gold production to the end of September, 1944, amounted to 295,824 fine oz. from ore having an average grade of 0.505 oz. a ton. In addition, the mill recovered 3,237 tons of arsenic trioxide having a purity of 83 per cent As2O3.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe four main groups of rocks of the Cadillac area- the Cadillac, Blake River, Kewagama or Pontiac, and Malartic- are found within the boundaries of the property. However, as these rocks have been fully described in · various government reports (1,2,3,4,5,6) and all the known orebodies occur within one group- the Blake River-a detailed description of the geology will be dispensed with here. The known ore deposits lie south of the Cadillac 'break' in a group of rocks that includes 'greenstones', greywackes, conglomerate, porphyries, and a rock of gabbroic composition that may be intrusive. Both flows and tuffs can be recognized in the 'greenstones'. The two bands of porphyry that trend easterly across most of the property have been considered by some observers to be dyke rocks and by others to be flows. Certain evidence points to their being dykes that were intruded as sills considerably prior to the emplacement of the gold-bearing veins, but the possibility of flow origin cannot be fully rejected. North of the talc-chlorite-carbonate schist zone forming the 'break' the rocks are conglomerate and greywacke with iron formation, in which there are no known veins of ore grade. Within the schist zone are minor acid and basic intrusives. The general trend of both bedding and schistosity is a few degrees south of east. The dip is generally vertica1 or steep to the south."

"The self-reduction is an alternative and promising process for production of pig iron because offers decisive benefits such as enhancing the reaction kinetic with decrease in fuel consumption and C02 emissions. The self-reduction mixture of iron ore fines, carbonaceous reducer and additives for slag forming components, without agglomeration, was tested in a laboratory rotary kiln. The additives for slag were defined for presenting two different estimated liquidus temperatures (1623 Kand 1773 K) to verify the effect of these temperatures on the iron-carbon nuggets coalescence process. These mixtures were tested at 1673 and 1773 Kin an experimental rotary kiln. After reduction-melting and coalescence processes the samples were disaggregated and the iron nuggets were classified by size. It was considered that nuggets larger than 7,93mm would be a good reference for coalescence index. Low liquidus temperature slag presented 37% of this larger fraction against only 13.5% for high liquidus temperature one. The low liquidus temperature slag would facilitate contact between the particles of iron-carbon in a rotary kiln, enhancing the coalescence.IntroductionThe slag composition usually depends on the reducer ash composition, the ore gangue, the binder composition and any fluxing material [l], and the mechanism of carbon transportation in slag that contains iron oxide reducible by carbon can be explained by the oxide reduction and the metal carburization. During carbon transportation, the carburized particle is transported to slag-metal interphases by the gravity effect, being assimilated by the metallic phase [2]. When the slag's iron oxide comes in contact with the solid carbon, it is immediately reduced, forming Fe particles and CO bubbles as it is shown in the figure l(a). The Fe particles are carburized by carbon particles; they are liquefied simultaneously in the carbon-slag interphase. The Fe-C liquid particles are transported from the slag-carbon interphase to iron-slag interphase as a result of slag flow, based on the surface tension difference (Marangoni effect), figure l(b). The Fe-C liquid particles coalesce on the iron surface and the carbon is immediately diffused in the iron as it is shown in figure l(c). The reduced iron is carburized continuously by repeated sequences [3]."

"This paper presents an application of the use of synthetic ores to study gold recovery by gravity. Three case studies are presented: the first focuses on the use of tungsten to study applications of Knelson Concentrators for upgrading gravity concentrates; the second on tungsten again, in this case to study the performance of a 86 Falcon Concentrator; and the third on lead to mimic gold's grinding behaviour.It is shown that the use of synthetic ores with metallic substitute for gold is not only expedient, but it can also lead to an increased understanding of separation and grinding mechanisms, because of the more accurate results and controlled particle shapes. The case studies highlight the problems associated with gold particle flakiness and gangue density. The grinding behaviour of malleable materials is shown to be complex, as particles can migrate to coarser size classes by flattening and cold welding, and to finer size classes by folding and actual breakage.IntroductionThe title of this contribution is not entirely misleading. On December 26, 1994, at 1:00 am, Santa Fe Pacific Gold's Twin Creeks Mine experienced a major highwall failure involving over 2.5 million tons. The resulting effects of this slide were thousands of ounces of gold that were now deferred and an unstable wall above which made mining the slough material unsafe.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is currently building City Water Tunnel #3 beneath the city. The purpose of this tunnel is to improve water distribution to the city and to allow the DEP to inspect the older tunnels and make the necessary repairs. These older tunnels have been in continuous operation since the early 1900's. Construction on the Third Tunnel is planned in four stages. The Nelson Street Shaft, which is the focus of this paper, is part of the second stage.

"The Dywidag-Systems International DSI Tandem Anchor bolt, with an improved expansion shell-washer design, can substantially reduce potential entry roof falls caused by twisted or deformed expansion shells of the traditional mechanical anchor bolts during installation. In addition, the improved anchorage system can also ensure that a consistent and high installed load is achieved, which is critical for effective beam building under thinly laminated or layered roof conditions. This paper discusses the genesis and anchorage performance of the Tandem Anchor bolt, and analyzes the tension/torque relationship of different mechanical shell anchors using data obtained from both lab and field tests. It also discusses roof bolting mechanisms, roof bolting systems, and factors influencing effective beam building. Finally, numerical modeling was used to analyze the effect of bolt pretension magnitude on entry roof stability.INTRODUCTIONThroughout the history of underground mining, keeping the roof from uncontrollable collapse has been the greatest concern of the miner. Tremendous strides have been made in better understanding, predicting, and supporting the mine roof. This conference has spent the last twenty-eight years sharing information and distributing it to the mining community. A paraphrased statement from former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld adequately describes the challenges to the mining engineer as it pertains to roof control: it is a study of known knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns. It is the hope of the authors to address some of these unknowns.The paper discusses the development of bolt anchorage systems from dry shells to shells with resin-assisted anchorage. It looks at some of the issues faced with the anchorage shells being used when introducing the insertion pressures caused by resin cartridges. The rationale behind the shell design changes was to compensate for this resin induced stresses.An improved expansion shell assembly (a slotted expansion shell base, a tapered cramming plug, and a novel support nut with tapered top) for mine roof bolts makes up the Tandem Anchor (U.S. Pat. No. 6742966); this minimizes the possibility of twisting seen with traditional mechanical shells and thus prevents springy bolts and shell leaves from breaking. A fully grouted Tandem Anchor bolting system has the advantages of both the pure mechanical point-anchor and the non-pretention fully grouted bolting systems. Once installed, the installed load or pretension will be locked in and never bleed off. Compared with the fully-grouted (2-speed resin) tension rebar bolting system, the fully-grouted Tandem Anchor bolting system can (a) reduce bolting cycle time (about 15 seconds per bolt), boosting coal production and productivity; (b) provide a greater installed load or pretention; and (c) achieve a consistent tension/torque ratio, which gives better bolting quality control. Therefore, a fully grouted Tandem Anchor bolting system is the most effective means to reinforce a weak rock mass intrinsically by the theory of beam building. For thinly laminated or layered roof conditions, a higher installed load or pretention (50% or more of the bolt's yield strength) can make a roof bolting system much stiffer, which results in less roof movement. Numerical modeling results show that the magnitude of the roof's tensile stress and relaxation zone can be substantially reduced under a higher installed load or pretention."

"Based on laboratory testwork, a two-stage cleaner / re-cleaner circuit with feed regrind was proposed to replace an existing single-stage middling circuit treating a scavenger concentrate at Inco’s Clarabelle mill. In order to effectively transfer the technology and implement the new flowsheet in the plant, an extensive on-site pilot plant campaign was conducted. After demonstrating the improved metallurgy, the two-stage middlings circuit was successfully implemented at the operation.The present paper describes the on-site pilot plant testwork and the plant metallurgical improvement after implementation of the new middlings circuit. The addition of TETA / Na2S03 greatly enhanced the pentlandite selectivity against pyrrhotite and the two-stage cleaning considerably improved the pentlandite selectivity against rock minerals. The improvement was immediate after the installation of the new middlings circuit. Size by size recovery analysis indicated that a finer regrind would further improve the metallurgy of the new two-stage cleanerhe-cleaner circuit and those modifications are in progress at the mill.INTRODUCTIONThe milling operation at Inco’s Clarabelle mill has been described elsewhere (Kerr and Kipkie, 1985; Agar, 1991). While maximizing the recoveries of chalcopyrite (Cp) and pentlandite (Pn), continuous effort has been directed toward improving pyrrhotite (Po) and rock minerals (Rk) rejection. Inco discovered diethylene triamine (DETA) and triethylene triamine (TETA) (Marticorena, et al., 1994) for pyrrhotite rejection. Falconbridge further improved pyrrhotite rejection using DETA and SO2 (Kelebek, et al., 1995). No special technologies are used in the rejection of rock minerals."

William Clinton Brown, Brooklyn, N. Y.: The demand for an apparatus for cooling water for condensers, refrigeratingmachinery and air-compressors, as well as water-jacketed furnaces, has led manufacturers to put such an apparatus on the market, so that it is now possible to purchase a cooling-tower, properly designed and constructed, by simply stating the amount of water to be cooled and the temperatures of the hot and the cold water. The principle is similar to that described by Mr. Henrich, but wood is not used in the best apparatus. There are two great objections to wood: First, it cannot last long under the very trying conditions to which it is subjected; and second, it absorbs the organic matter with which water in constant use becomes impregnated, and the resulting odor is very disagreeable. A few days ago I saw a cooling-tower and condenser, built by the Henry R. Worthington Co., in operation at the Edison electric-lighting station in Brooklyn, N. Y., cooling the water for a 700 horse-power condenser. It consisted of a large stack of iron, about 15 feet in diameter by about 30 feet high. This stack was filled with tiling through which the water falls. A whirligig distributes the water evenly over the top, and a large fan, about 6 feet in diameter, driven by a 10 horse-power electric motor, blows air into the bottom, thus giving a positive circulation. The water, in running down the sides of the tiling, is met by the blast of air, and enough is evaporated to cool the rest. The vacuum-gauge on the condenser showed 26 inches; so the condenser was undoubtedly getting sufficient cool water.

"Mechanical alloying (MA) synthesizing technology and thennohydrogen processing (THP) were utilized to produce nanocrystalline Ti-MMC's reinforced by TiB intermetallic compound by using TiH2-B powder mixtures. Powders MA'ed up to 8 hours were examined by X-ray diffraction and SEM study. All MA'ed powders afterwards were HIP'ed at 700, 800 and 950EC for 1 hour. Detailed XRD, SEM and TEM study of the samples were carried out to determine the structure and micrography of the Ti-TiB MMC material processed by MA+THP approach followed by HIP'ing at high temperatures.IntroductionThe fiber reinforced titanium base composites [1,2] which possess a great resistance to high temperature have been investigated. In these studies fibers of C and SiC were used as reinforcing materials. However, these fibers react with Ti-matrix at elevated temperature resulting in product formation at the interface between the matrix and the fiber. Because of the chemical reactions, strength of the product MMC material diminishes.In conventional techniques of whisker reinforced composite material production, the mixtures of matrix metal powders and dispersed fibers are consolidated by hot pressing, HIP and/or hot extrusion. These techniques, however, have some shortcomings. Hard and brittle fibers could be broken during mixing cycle of the processing. Consolidation techniques could also be the cause for fiber breakdown. Attaining of the uniform dispersion of fibers into the metal matrix is not an easy process. The chemical reactions at elevated temperature exposures in the interface between the matrix material and fiber reinforcement cause product formations leading to poor mechanical properties."

A shipboard research system capable of operating in waters of up to 2,000 meters has been designed and implemented by the Hawai'i Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) of the University of Hawai'i. It uses a remotely-operated ocean bottom survey camera system, an ROV, the Pisces V submersible, and a submersible emergency recovery system, all aboard the 222- foot R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa. All systems are operated from the stern of Ka'imikai with a mounted Caley telearm and articulated A-frame system. The system was designed for multipurpose use of the ship for launch and recovery of the Pisces V submersible on a lift recovery line (with or without diver assistance), or night-time operations with an electro-optical cable using either the HURL ocean floor sidescan or photo and video system operated at 10 meters above the ocean floor. The 1.14-inch diameter cable is also used to operate an ROV system. The garage/ROV system can also act as a submersible rescue system with a submersible lift capability. The ship is equipped with a SeaBeam and shallow penetration sediment profiling systems. This integrated system approach to deep ocean floor research will make it possible for HURL to carry out research pro- grams on seamount ocean resources and ocean chemistry and climate in Hawai'i and the equatorial Pacific.

FEB. 17-The past month found the average citizen backed off just a little more into his blind corner staring glassily at hydrogen bombs, unbalanced budgets, John L. Lewis, more inflation, a rising wave of strikes, the country's only active battleship on a mudbank, a famous scientist in gaol as a traitor, a favorite actress on a Roman holiday, and rising mountains of potatoes, butter and eggs begging for destruction. About the only bright spot has been industrial activity and employment, but even these are menaced by the coal shortage. Most industries have orders on hand or in prospect to warrant high operations for some time to come. The trend of the Reserve Board's production index is upward except as strikes may interfere. There has been heavy buying at the seasonal merchandise shows, particularly in furniture and house-hold goods. The demand for goods of this kind illustrates greater confidence in the Spring outlook than was generally felt a year ago. Further, the demand also reflects improved market positions due to curtailment of output and reduction of inventories in 1949 and sustained consumer buying power. It demonstrates the strong support that is given directly to many businesses, and indirectly to all, by the phenomenal construction activity that is now under way. The Commerce Department places the number of new dwelling units started in 1949 at the new all-time high of 1,019,000.

The application of the law of supply and demand to the sale of crude oil is generally conceded, but the motives underlying the buyer's (refiner's) demands are not always obvious to the seller (producer). In some cases this obscurity has led to the conclusion that the refiner may be unnecessarily particular when he selects one crude and rejects another. This preference, however, is very largely the reflection of the refiner's product demands and the quality of the stocks obtainable from the selected crude. The purpose of this paper is to point out critical characteristies of the major classes of refined products and to show how crudes vary in their suitability for such products. With relatively few exceptions, available processing methods and addition agents make it theoretically possible to produce any type of refined product from any crude source, although it may not be economically sound to do so. The widespread application of thermal cracking for converting higher boiling stocks into gasoline is well known. More recently cracking and refining in the presence of catalysts9 have been developed, as well as various processes for polymerizing lighter hydrocarbons into gasolines having desirable characteristics.6 For several years, selective solvents have been applied commercially to refining inferior quality kerosene, Diesel fuel and lubricating oil distillates.3 Improved methods for refining lubricating oils from crude residual4 formerly suitable only for fuel, are now in use and a number of special solvent processes are available for dewaxing lubricating oils to low pour point.5 These improved refining methods have been developed not only to meet the demand for improved product quality but also to enable the refiner to obtain quality products from crude sources that would not yield such products by the older refining methods. In many cases, the utilization of these modern refining tools necessitates an appreciable expenditure for equipment as well as added manufacturing costs, and their application therefore must be justified economically. Despite the availability of such tools, the added processing costs involved and yields obtainable may render their application entirely impractical. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has produced a generic in situ copper mine design manual, which contains a computerized cost model for in situ copper oxide mining. The model specifies (1) site-specific parameters, which must be quantified for mine design, (2) a method for minesite design based on those parameters, and (3) a procedure for assessing economic viability for the mine design. The menu-driven computer program performs calculations for developing commercial mine design specifications, as well as capital and operating costs. The default values are based on 1986 dollars, and indices for updating costs are included. The program also provides discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) and allows for sensitivity analyses for an in situ mining operation at any specific undisturbed copper oxide deposit. This report is to be used with the 1990 version of the computer program, which has been made user friendly. It describes the flies, tutorial, input phase, help function, and monitor display of all calculated values and of the DCFROR table. The monitor-displayed discounted initial value of investment and annual operating costs are defined. The dual rate-of-return situation and sensitivity analyses are also briefly discussed. Information is provided on obtaining the computer program on diskette.

The oil embargo and increasing disillusionment with nu- clear power have put this country's abundant coal reserves in growing demand. Both the government and industry are looking toward increased coal mining, and with this goes an increased interest in new and advanced methods of coal utilization. One advanced coal system stands out among the rest-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Its high efficiency, strong probability of sulfur dioxide control, and limited consumption of cooling water place MHD in a unique position to help the power generation industry. Another point in MHD's favor is the capital costs of operation, which are lower than those of other advanced technologies. However, initial costs are higher and realization of a commercial MHD plant in this country may be more than a decade away.
