Chemical and physical tests of coals for the use of the Government have been made by the United States Bureau of Mines. These tests form part of a general study of the coals in the United States with respect to the manner in which each coal can be utilized most efficiently. As a result of this study, much information of value to all industries using coal has been compiled. Special investigations by the Bureau of Mines of the fuels used by the Government have, until recently, been for the most part limited to coal. In the course of these investigations the bureau has de- veloped new methods for use in the purchase of coal by the Gov- ernment. The application of these methods permits an intelligent selection of the coal adapted to the requirements of particular heat- ing or power plants, and has already resulted in the saving of large sums of money. In addition, these investigations have led to the compiling of a series of carefully made analyses of samples of coal collected in a predetermined manner in the mines of all the impor- tant coal fields in the United States, and these analyses are being published to enable Government purchasing agents and all users of coal to select the coal best suited to their needs. The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the general char- acter and commercial quality of some of the coals mined in the United States that reach tidewater shipping ports, and to show in a general way the important characteristics of those coals that by reason of transportation facilities and the situation of the coal fields are most available for export. Coals of excellent physical character and of high heating value are available for export. For this reason and because of the modern facilities at the collieries for properly grading large shipments, American producers can supply coals suitable for any kind of service. The transportation system from the mines to tidewater and the coal- handling equipment for loading boats at the various ports are highly developed, so that producers are able to give excellent service to foreign buyers. Enormous quantities of these coals have been used by railroads, manufacturing, illuminating-gas, and coke plants, and seagoing vessels, and for household purposes. Much of the coal available for export is superior to the coals that have been supplied to foreign users from other sources.

The existence of vast deposits of lignite in the West Central and Western States is well known, although the extent and importance of the deposits have not been appreciated, nor has there been an adequate economic utilization of the deposits. The work of the Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological Survey, and the State geological surveys is disclosing an increasingly large area, underlaid with this kind of coal. Among the States having the largest workable deposits may be mentioned North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Texas, and in several other Western States lignite occurs in smaller areas. In North Dakota alone it is estimated that the deposits cover approximately 32,000 square miles, many of them being 10 to 15 feet thick and capable of producing in all several hundred billions of tons of lignite. When one stops to consider what these figures mean as to the immensity of these deposits in the West, it is not strange that people are seeking to ascertain better means for deriving larger benefits from the proper utilization of those great deposits. Consequently, any proposed methods of utilization that are promising are well worthy of careful consideration.

The United States produces all of the fuller's earth used for re- fining petroleum within its borders. On the other hand, most of the fuller's earth used in bleaching edible oils has been imported from England. Recently a few of the refiners of cottonseed oil have begun to utilize domestic fuller's earth, whereas others have been unable to substitute it successfully for English earth in their practice. Many samples of American earth distinctly superior in bleaching power to the English earth have come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines. For these reasons an investigation of the mining, preparation, and use of fuller's earth in this country, especially in its application to edible oils, was conducted in order to ascertain why our own raw material has been deemed inapplicable to our needs. During the calendar year 1912, according to figures of the United States Geological Survey," there were imported into the United States 1,970 tons of unground fuller's earth, valued at $11,619, and 17,139 tons of ground fuller's earth, valued at $133,718, these values being based on the wholesale market price at the port of origin. The addition of transportation charges, commissions, etc., make the price to the American refiner $14.50 to $16 per ton. Accord- ing to the latest figures compiled by the United States Geological Survey, the United States in 1912 produced 32,715 tons of fuller's earth, valued at $305,522, or $9.34 per ton, at the mine. Most of this domestic production was from three plants in Florida and one in southwestern Georgia and was used almost wholly for decolorizing petroleum. A small amount from other localities was used in the refining of edible oils. No figures definitely differentiating fuller's earth from other clays are kept in regard to our exports, but it is certain that several thousand tons of domestic earth was exported to Germany, and it is also true that German refiners of edible oils have

In connection with its investigation looking to the prevention of waste and the increase of safety and efficiency in the mineral indus- tries the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a study of the possible uses of the electric furnace in metallurgy. This bulletin presents a com- pilation of such data as seem to be useful for the information of persons who may be interested in the matter. In the application of electricity to metallurgy three kinds of processes are involved, namely, mechanical, thermal, and electrolytic. Under the mechanical application of electricity come those proc- esses of dressing and concentrating ores that are known as either electrostatic or electromagnetic processes. In electrothermic processes the current is used as a source of heat. The fundamental differences between the various types of electric furnace that are at present in commercial use relate to the manner in which the electric current is applied, as may be noted by reference to that part of this report in which the subject is discussed. In electrolytic processes the electric current is used for depositing metals from solutions. The process may be conducted in one of the following ways: (1) The material to be treated may be put into solu- tion and then electrolyzed, the material thus treated forming the electrolyte; (2) the material to be treated may form the anode or be placed in contact with the anode; or (3) the material to be treated may form the cathode or be placed in contact with the cathode. This report treats of electrothermic processes, with the possible exception of those for the reduction of aluminum from its ores. Moreover, of the processes used in the so-called electrochemical in- dustries only those for the reduction of an ore to metal, or to a com- pound of the metal that is of value in itself, or is an aid in metallurgical work, are here discussed.

Some of the investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines have for their object the collecting and disseminating of information regard- ing methods by which the fuels of the country may be most effi- ciently used. As the analysis of flue gases tends to develop better methods of firing, which in turn reduces waste of fuel, the Bureau of Mines in this bulletin presents for the benefit of those in charge of boiler plants and all other persons interested detailed information on methods of sampling and analyzing flue gases, and on the utilization of the analyses in promoting boiler-room economy. This bulletin is intended to be a companion to Technical Paper 80," and is written in plain and nontechnical language, as far as pos- sible, so that it may be readily understood by persons who have not had the advantage of a technical education. Whenever possible, illustrations of apparatus and methods of handling have been used rather than elaborate descriptions. The material presented in this report is arranged in two parts. The first part contains the description of the apparatus and the methods used in sampling and analyzing flue gases. The second part gives experimental results obtained with the different methods of sampling and collecting flue gas that are recommended in the first part of the report. Only simple apparatus and methods are considered, as they are accurate enough to show the large heat losses due to the use of too much air, and are also accurate enough to indicate any incomplete combustion losses of economic importance. Without doubt the loss due to large excess of air is the greatest one in the boiler room, and can usually be greatly reduced by making proper use of gas analysis. Before engineers in the isolated industrial plants can be induced to analyze for small traces of combustible gases, they must be first taught how to analyze for carbon dioxide (CO), and they must learn to appre- ciate the great possibilities of reducing loss from large excess of air. The act (36 Stat., 369) that established the Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior defined as part of the bureau's province and duty the making of "diligent investigation of the methods of mining, especially in relation to safety of miners and the appliances best adapted to prevent accidents," and it authorized the bureau from time to time to make such public reports of its work and investiga- tions as the Secretary of the Department of the Interior may direct, with the recommendations of the bureau. The national mine-rescue and first-aid conference was projected in the hope that it would be a factor in increasing safety in the mining industry through the recommendation of better and safer methods of conducting mine-rescue operations, more efficient methods of extend- ing and giving training in the use of artificial-breathing apparatus, and approved and more effective methods of administering first aid to injured miners and of training miners in first-aid work. The bureau feels warranted in publishing the resolutions adopted by the conference as a guide to mine workers and others concerned in obtaining greater safety in mining, and in presenting such extracts from the discussion as indicate the reason for the adoption of any particular method. In issuing this bulletin, however, the bureau does not indorse these resolutions in whole or in part as a final ex- pression of its views regarding the best method or procedure in any case. It does believe, however, that the resolutions furnish an excel- lent starting point from which to develop a standard code of pro- cedure in mine-rescue and first-aid work. It will be noted that in some important cases further information is necessary before any standard procedure can be recommended, par- ticularly as regards types of bandages, methods of resuscitation, the use of stimulants, the cumulative effect of poisonous gases, the diet of men engaged in rescue work, the physiologic effect of the pressure

Although descriptions of the methods of analysis of explosives are to be found in many books on explosives, and in works on engineer- ing chemistry or chemical analysis, most of these descriptions are incomplete and lacking in details. The methods of analysis employed in the laboratories of most explosives factories are frequently treated as trade secrets, and very little information is published from such laboratories. This bulletin outlines the methods of analysis that are used by the Bureau of Mines in the examination of certain classes of explo- sives. The present form of most of these methods has been worked out in the bureau's explosives laboratory. The methods employed by Prof. C. E. Munroe were taken as a basis, and were elaborated to meet the demands incident to the treatment of complicated mix- tures and to the development of the explosives art. A subsequent bulletin will discuss the methods of analysis of "permissible" explosives, many of the latter being of decidedly complicated char- acter and requiring special treatment. This bulletin presents the methods of analysis of "ordinary" dynamite, and the ammonia, gelatin, low-freezing, and granular dynamites, and the common grades of black gunpowder and black blasting powder. The bulletin is published by the bureau for the information of all persons inter- ested in explosives and their safe and efficient use in mining work. As the term "ordinary" dynamite, though much used, has no conventional meaning, and may be used to cover a wide variety of compositions of matter, it may be noted that the standard dynamite used at the Pittsburgh testing station is a good example of the "ordinary" dynamite known in this country. The locomotives in service on the railroads of this country consume more than one-fifth of the total coal production of the United States. The amount is so large that any small saving that can be made effective in locomotive practice at once becomes an important factor in conserving the fuel supply of the nation. For this reason the United States Geological Survey gave attEmtion to the special problems of combustion in locomotive boilers. It approached this task from several different directions. The facts presented herewith constitute one series of results. In the fall of 1906 the locomotive-testing laboratory of Purdue University, at Lafayette, Ind., entered on a series of tests, one purpose of which was to determine in precise terms the degree of efficiency with which a modern high-class American locomotive utilizes the heat energy of the fuel supplied to it. The general interest in the subject, the elaborate plans which had been formulated for conducting the work, and the substantial character of the support which had been pledged to maintain it justified the Geological Survey in aiding the investigation. a The cooperation of the Survey consisted in detailing experts to assist the regular staff of the laboratory in the chemical and calorific work of the tests. These experts, working under the general supervision of the director of the Purdue laboratory, became responsible for the sampling of smoke-box gases, of the fuel used, of the cinders caught in the front end, of the sparks discharged by the stack, and of the refuse caught in the ash pan. The gas analyses were made by them at the university laboratory. The analyses of all solid samples and the calorific tests of the fuels were made at the government fuel-testing plant at St. Louis. The representatives of the Survey were not concerned with other phases of the work.

Throughout the Appalachian Mountains there are dikes of coarse granite or pegmatite, which were intruded into other rocks. These pegmatite dikes contain feldspar, quartz, white mica (muscovite), black mica (biotite), and other minerals, such as beryl, garnet, and tourmaline. The investigation here reported has to do only with the dikes of the southern Appalachian region, in which the abundance of each mineral is as in the order given above. The pegmatites of this region are in every stage of alteration from those in which the feldspar is fresh to those in which the feldspar has decomposed to kaolin. The muscovite (white mica) shows no evidence of alteration, although most of the other associated minerals show traces of disintegration where the feldspar is completely kao- linized. At many places mining for mica has been done in dikes in which the feldspar is completely kaolinized, though the only evi- dences of disintegration in the mica are clay stains which are some- times noted between the outside lamina. Mining in these pegmatite dikes antedates history, traces of prehis- toric workings and some crude mining implements of stone having been unearthed by recent operations. The prehistoric mining is generally supposed to have been for mica, although investigations fail to show that the aborigines put the mica obtained to any par- ticular use except for ornaments, a few mica ornaments having been found in mounds in this region. The search for kaolin or semikaolinized feldspar is a plausible ex- planation of these prehistoric workings; all of them were in pegmatite that is more or less altered, and seemingly stopped only when the pegmatite became too hard to permit working with crude stone im- plements. The dumps do not represent the amount of material that one would expect, from their extent, the workings to have produced. As part of its investigation of methods of increasing the efficiency of fuel resources, the Bureau of Mines is continuing the study of the general problems involved in the economic use of fuels in gas pro- ducers that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. In the course of this study many inci- dental problems of prime importance have demanded consideration. Among them is the determination, under practically constant con- ditions, of the duration of gas-producer tests necessary to reduce the possible error to a minimum. A discussion of this proper length of test period forms the first part of this bulletin. An attempt to dispel some of the uncertainties that arise in an investigation or to account for some of the minor phenomena often necessitates a systematic and careful study of certain chemical, ther- modynamic, or physical laws, or a combination of these, which in turn may result in information or conclusions of great value. Fur- thermore, seemingly unimportant observations often prove to bear directly upon the design, construction, or manipulation of the machine under test. In attempts to improve the gas producer considerable attention has been given by manufacturers to such questions as fixing or isolating the combustible components of the tar, utilizing the waste heat of the producer for the generation of the steam required by the plant, apply- ing the suction principle to bituminous coal and other tarry fuels, and many allied subjects. Little study, apparently, has been given to the physical-chemical conditions most suitable to the formation of hydro- gen and of carbon monoxide, with a view to regulating the percentages of these gases in generators using fuels other than anthracite coal or charcoal. An attempt was made to introduce such investigations when the operations of the government coal-testing plant began at the Louisi- ana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904, but owing to adverse conditions these problems were abandoned until the plant was trans- ferred to Norfolk in 1907. The delay in beginning this line of inves- tigations, together with the short testing season at Norfolk, limit the second part of this report to preliminary physical-chemical studies, which, however, were sufficiently significant to warrant careful ex- amination pending more complete researches, which are being carried on at the station located in Pittsburg.

Previous work.-The general plan of work outlined for the Government fuel-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, included investigations relative to the briquetting of coals found in the United States. These investigations embraced the possibility of making satisfactory commercial fuels from lignite or low-grade coals which do not stand shipment well; of benefiting culm or slack coals that are wasted or sold at unremunerative prices; and of improving the furnace efficiency or ability to withstand transportation of good coals. This work was begun in 1904 and was continued in 1905, 1906, and 1907 as an essential part of investigations looking to the determination of methods for reducing waste and increasing efficiency in the utilization of the fuel resources in the United States. The initial briquetting tests at St. Louis, which included examination into the behavior of different coals or mixtures of coals in the briquetting press, experimental study of the merits of various substances used as binders, and consideration of the physical properties and resistance to weather and abrasion of the briquets, have been described.a They demonstrated that satisfactory briquets could be made from most coals, and that by briquetting the commercial value of many low-grade coals and lignites could be raised enough to more than cover the cost of manufacture. Norfolk plant.-The briquetting plant of the Geological Survey was moved from St. Louis, Mo., to Norfolk, Va., in 1907, along with the steam boiler and producer-gas equipment of the fuel-testing plant, as the closing out of the affairs of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the consequent removal of the buildings from Forest Park made a change of location necessary. Norfolk was selected largely with a view to the testing of coals for naval purposes, and because of facilities in the way of buildings and materials offered by the Jamestown Exposition Company. The work at Norfolk was chiefly devoted to making steaming and briquet tests of coals which reach the Atlantic seaboard at Norfolk and Newport News and are used by the navy and merchant marine. Two briquet machines were installed at the Norfolk plant, one being the English machine used in briquetting tests by the Geological Survey at St. Louis in 1905 and 1906, and the other an American machine. The briquets made at this plant were tested on locomotives of several railroads entering Norfolk and on the United States torpedo boat Buldle in comparison with the run-of-mine coal used in making them. Some of the tests were conducted by the railroads on their own locomotives, but those on the Biddle and on the locomotive of the Seaboard Air Line Railway were carried on by W. T. Ray and Henry Kreisinger, of the United States Geological Survey. Personnel.-Charles T. Malcolmson continued in general charge of the briquetting section after the removal to Norfolk until January 1, 1908. Walter J. Chapman continued in charge of operation of the briquet machines and of the observations reported under the heading "Details of manufacture." Charles L. Wright supervised the installation of the English briquet machine and later in the year continued the physical tests of briquets and the analyses in the chemical laboratory of the section until January 1, 1908, on which date he was placed in general charge of the work of the section. G. E. Ryder and Ralph Galt also continued with the staff, but the former was obliged to resign soon after the plant was in operation on account of ill health; the latter continued with the section as computer until the close of work on December 1, 1908.

This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimina- tion of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To deter- mine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with refer- ence to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope. Although the hypothesis as to coking quality finds but partial support in the chemical analyses, its consideration has led to a method of predicting from an analysis with a fair degree of certainty whether any given coal will coke by the ordinary process. The unbroken transition between coals originally similar but now classed in widely different groups, whether of the same age or of different ages, as a result of dynamochemical action, appears demonstrated by the analyses as well as by field observation. In its investigation of more efficient methods for utilizing the coals and lignites in the United States, to the end that waste might be avoided, the value of low-grade coals increased, and the life of the nation's fuel resources prolonged, the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey carried on a study of the factors involved in the manufacture and use of briquets, including the suitability of various coals for briquetting, the cheapest and most satisfactory binders, and the furnace behavior and evaporative efficiency of briquetted fuel. The investigations had their beginning in the work done at the coaltesting plant at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, and were continued at St. Louis and later at Norfolk, Va. Accounts of various tests and statements of the conclusions to be drawn from them have appeared in a number of bulletins. a In connection with the work at Norfolk, comparative steaming tests were made in stationary, marine, and locomotive boilers with run-ofmine coal and the same coal formed into briquets of two sizes. The tests in a locomotive boiler that are described in detail in this bulletin were undertaken to add cumulative evidence to work done at other places. They were made possible through the courtesy of the Seaboard Air Line Railway Company in supplying both the locomotive and the coal used. During the trials the locomotive stood on a side track in the shop yards of the railway company at Portsmonth, Va. No running tests were made.

For the purpose of procuring data that could be used in estimating the value of the briquetting process as applied to American fuels, the United States Geological Survey, in cooperation with other interests, began in 1904, at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, certain experiments involving the production and use of bituminous-coal briquets. It installed at St. Louis, and later at Norfolk, machines for the manufacture of such briquets, and the output of these machines has been tested in locomotive service on several different railroads in comparison with natural fuels. An elaborate and carefully executed series of tests involving the use of natural coals and of briquets made from the same coal, previously crushed, was carried out on a locomotive mounted at the testing plant of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company at Altoona, Pa.; and some preliminary experiments involving the use of briquets in marine service were made in connection with one of the Government's torpedo boats. A description of these tests is presented herewith. The results sustain the following general conelusions: 1. The briquets made on the Government's machines have well withstood exposure to the weather. and have suffered but little deterioration from handling. 2. In all classes of service involved by the experiments, the use of briquets in the place of natural coal appears to have increased the evaporative efficiency of the boilers tested. 3. The smoke produced has in no test been more dense with the briquets than with coal; on the contrary, in most tests the smoke density is said to have been less when briquets were used. 4. The use of briquets increases the facility with which an even fire over the whole area of the grate may be maintained.

This report is issued by the Bureau of Mines as one of a series dealing with methods of increasing safety and efficiency in mining operations. It is intended purely as a preliminary statement of the present development of hydraulic mine filling as conducted in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania. A discussion of different methods, their variations and modifications, as well as their probable extension as a result of amplified tests of the various roof-supporting materials, will be presented in a future bulletin. The history of the development of the anthracite-mining industry, from the time when the Indian tribes in the Wyoming and Lacka- wanna Valleys first discovered the existence of "stone coal," on through subsequent events-the purchase of lands containing enor- mous deposits of coal for insignificant sums of money, the develop- ment of the first mine, the formation of the first company, the build- ing of canals and railroads-up to the present time when the industry has become of such tremendous importance to the prosperity of north- eastern Pennsylvania and of the Nation itself, is intersprinkled with romance, tragedy, and pathos. The great economic lessons to be learned from a study of mining operations in the anthracite region suggest to the person interested in the efficient utilization of natural resources the need of applying such methods as will make possible the conservation to posterity of this invaluable deposit of coal that has resulted from the operation of the processes of nature during probably hundreds of millions of years. It is the opinion of many prominent mining men familiar with mining operations in the United States and abroad that under certain conditions the most practical way of preventing loss of unmined coal in pillars and of protecting surface property from damage by sub- sidence is by filling the workings with refuse material. This bulletin aims to present a general discussion of hydraulic mine filling, its origin, development, and practicability in anthracite mining.

This bulletin is the fourth of a series a showing the results of the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications. The work of inspecting and analyzing coal delivered on Government contracts was transferred to the Bureau of Mines by an act of Congress effective July 1, 1910. It had been carried on for several years before that date by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. The purchase of coal on the dealer's statement as to quality or on the reputation of the mine or district producing the coal is gradually being discontinued. At present most coal-purchasing contracts make definite provision regarding the desired heating value of a coal and the composition as shown by analysis. The heating value is usually expressed in British thermal units" and the composition specified is that shown by proximate" analysis. The price to be paid for delivered coal is made to depend on whether the analyses and heating-value tests of samples representing the delivery show the quality to be above or below the quality set forth in the contract. Large coal consumers are beginning to appreciate more and more the importance of the cost of power as a factor in the cost of producing a finished article. The endeavor to increase the efficiency and the economical operation of a power plant calls for an intimate knowledge of the quality of the coal being used. The purchase of coal under specifications insures the purchaser getting what he pays for and the coal being of the quality guaranteed. In addition, the analyses and tests of the delivered coal furnish data whereby the power-plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the conditions of operation.

General statement.-The briquetting tests conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey had their beginning in the testing of coals and lignites at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis, Mo., in 1904. Briquetting tests were made at the fuel-testing plants at St. Louis, Mo., and at Norfolk, Va. Similar tests to be made at the experiment station of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburg, Pa., form an essential part of investigations looking to the determination of the fuel value of the coals and lignites belonging to or for the use of the United States. The tests have comprised (1) the manufacture of briquets to determine the adaptability of different coals and lignites to the process and the merits of different binding materials; (2) physical tests to establish the fitness of the briquets to withstand weathering, transportation, and handling; and (3) steaming tests to prove the calorific value of the briquets in boilers of different types used by the Government, and, by comparison with the raw coals, the benefits to be derived from briquetting. Details of the tests have been issued in other publications. list of Government publications on fuel testing and briquetting is given at the close of this volume. Tests at Norfolk.-The fuel tests conducted at Norfolk included a detailed investigation of a number of Virginia and West Virginia coals that are bought by the United States Government for the Navy and for use in constructing the Panama Canal, and are extensively used by the merchant marine, manufacturing plants, and railroads. Through a cooperative arrangement with the Navy Department steaming tests of the coals were undertaken to determine the relative merits of the same coal when burned raw or as briquets in marine boilers. Preliminary arrangements were made between Joseph A. Holmes, then expert in charge of the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and now director of the Bureau of Mines, and Rear-Admiral Charles W. Rae, Chief Engineer of the United States Navy. The tests were made on board the U. S. torpedo boat Biddle, designated for the purpose, beginning December 6, 1907, and ending January 27, 1908. The coal used in these tests came from the Sewell and Beckley beds in the New River district of West Virginia. With the particular equipment used in the tests both coal and briquets were far. from smokeless; consequently the data of this bulletin are applicable only by analogy to parallel operation with a coal more nearly smokeless, but nevertheless applicable with much reliability. The possibilities of coals of different composition are indicated by the data to be published in a bulletin of the Bureau of Mines, wherein the present authors describe a number of tests in which only a very slight amount of smoke was emitted while burning raw coal from the Pocahontas No.3 bed, West Virginia, and briquets made therefrom at rates of combustion very much higher than any rates used in the torpedo-boat boiler. At a combustion rate of 120 pounds of the Pocahontas briquets per square foot of grate surface there was scarcely any smoke. It was the original intention to make a set of preliminary steaming tests alongside a dock (which tests furnish material for this bulletin) and to finish with a set of running tests at sea; but the running tests were never made, for lack of time and men.

This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment.
