Dawsonite-bearing oil shale of Colorado's Green River formation offers a unique and vast (more than 5.9 Gt of A120 j) resource of easily extractable alumina. The processing methods required by the thermal reactions of dawsonite and its oil-shale carrier also require production of shale oil, soda ash, and nahcolite as marketable coproducts. These production methods are presented. The alumina production process is contrasted with the Bayer process to describe technical advantages of extraction of alumina from oil shale which may offset the problems associated with processing a relatively lean ore. While alumina production from oil shale requires development of new technology, the technical problems appear solvable. Only the political problems arising from the now onerous and completely unnecessary federal oil-shale withdrawal appear less solvable.

The Seismic Interactive Interpretation Workstation (IIW) integrates various sets of geophysical and geological data to form a network of information which is stored in a database. Computer models are generated from known drillhole information and later correlated with the processed seismic data. Seismic color processing adds another dimension to the interpretation process. Complex trace attributes provide better definition of subtle features not easily observed from black and white sections. Utilizing the computer workstation, the explorationist gains valuable insight and conducts more intelligent interpretation of seismic data through a more comprehensive network of data analysis.

U.S. Gold Commission Established. - The President, with the authorization of Congress, has named a gold commission made up of 17 individuals, most of them Government officials, to study U.S. policies related to the role of gold in domestic and international monetary systems and report its findings and recommendations to Congress. U.S. Lead Exposure Ruling. - On June 29, the Supreme Court upheld the Government's right to set lead exposure levels for employees at the workplace. The Court ruled in favor of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in a challenge by a group that alleged that OSHA had failed to conduct a cost-benefit analysis prior to issuance of the lead standards. It was the Court's contention that Congress did not require such an analysis when it empowered OSHA to establish workplace standards. The petition to the Court was made by the Lead Industries Association Inc., Battery Council International Inc" American Iron and Steel Institute, St. Joe Minerals Corp., and other lead mining and consuming firms.

A dynamic, interactive map has been developed of the life cycle of a number of metals, from mining through to minerals processing, metal production, product manufacturing, recovery and waste management. Whilst the existing metal process network and waste management infrastructure provide substantial scope for (product) design, these also limit change due to the complex interdependence of metals, both in production and recovery, and the strong path dependency of industry and infrastructure development. Therefore, models for dynamic simulation were constructed that allow the specification and evaluation of the metal process network and waste management infrastructure ‘products’ over a longer time span. The model has been constructed using a bottom-up approach, to enable assessment of the environmental aspects of metallurgy and to simulate changes in the system structure and technology, i.e. from reactor or individual process step up to integrated material cycles. The model comprises hierarchical mass balances and linear models of individual processes and sub-processes. Thus, at lower system aggregate levels an increasing level of technical detail is represented. Data reconciliation has been used literature data on process feed, products and residue composition to calculate representative and reliable split factors around each (sub-)process. World production figures on process capacity and recovery rates are be used to calculate the relative contribution of processes. The dynamic map is illustrated with a case on the introduction of lead-free solder.

A mine’s inherent capacity is dictated by factors such as equipment, design, people, processes, and environment. Actual production may approach, but never surpass, the inherent capacity limit. The inherent capacity ceiling can only be increased through re-engineering. Autonomous haulage systems have the potential to significantly increase a mine’s inherent and realized capacity. Realized capacity may be maximized through the optimization of soft factors such as the processes, behaviours, and organizational systems, controlling asset utilization, availability, and performance. Truck shovel dispatching systems revolutionized the utilization of mobile assets. High-precision global positioning systems (HP-GPS) are increasingly being adopted to optimize equipment performance. Real-time maintenance management systems have the potential to revolutionize equipment availability and significantly reduce cash costs. This paper explores some of the solutions available to mines to increase their inherent capacity and maximize their realized capacity.

"Sixteen miners died tragically at the Paymaster gold mine in Timmins, Ontario, in February 1945 when a badly corroded hoist rope broke. The investigation of the Royal Commission that followed arrived at a number of recommendations (The Legislative Assembly of Ontario, 1947) aimed at avoiding future disasters of this kind. One consequence was the development and legislated use in Canada, several decades ago, of powerful electromagnetic (EM) instruments for the non-destructive testing of mine shaft wire ropes. The authors have been involved for many years in the design, production, and testing of EM instruments (Geller and Udd, 1990, 1992; Geller and Kitzinger, 1991; Geller et al., 1992). Since the mid-1990s, particular attention was paid to the design and operational results obtained from the computer controlled portable MagnographTM II wire rope tester (Geller et al., 1995, 1998).In the present paper, the authors summarize further hardware- and software-related developments of this instrument. Further, an account is given of the results obtained from the most recent design known as the Perma- ScanTM testing system. This is also a computerized dual-function system. In it, however, the sensor head is designed primarily, if not solely, for permanent installation and for remotely controlled operation. This represents a basic departure from traditional designs, which were intended for ad hoc temporary installations. The remote-controlled instrument described in this paper has now been in operational use for more than four years."

Introduction The availability of a thorough, simple-to-use roof fall classification system is desirable for several reasons. First, such a system would expedite the reporting of falls for the purposes of estimating material removal costs, analyzing damage levels, and complying with federal regulations to report falls in certain areas of the mine. Second, the classification system would allow the mining engineer to record falls routinely with little time and effort expended. This would encourage him to make observations concerning what type of roof support would work best in a given situation. Third, and probably most important, an adequate roof fall classification system is the first step toward developing a means of predicting the occurrence and extent of future falls. It was with these three reasons in mind that the following classification system was developed. The type of classification chosen reflects the background of the developer and the intended purposes of the system. Hylbert has proposed a geologic-based classification which groups falls as to structural and compositional origin. The need for similar systems is noted by Cox and by Ferm and Melton. Each of these researchers is confronted with a situation requiring a relationship between local geology and roof fall occurrence. Such a relationship would allow the prediction of the relative frequency of falls from a knowledge of local geologic features. The current research is aimed at fulfilling somewhat different requirements, as noted above. Fall geometry has been chosen as the basis of the classification system so fall type can be reported independent of local geological, environmental, and tectonic conditions. "We carried out adsorption experiments in chloride media to study the adsorption characteristics of Pd (II) anions on the surface of activated carbon. Throughout the experiments, we used commercial activated carbon pellets (0.8 Norit). The adsorption process was interpreted by using the ionisation and adsorption model. This implies that palladium anions were adsorbed physically on a protonated surface of activated carbon either as anionic complex species (PdCl4 -2) or aqua chloro-complex species [PdCl3(H2O)-] in acidic media. Furthermore, we established that adsorption of Pd (II) species was reversible at high chloride [Cl-1] concentration. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qsat) of Pd (II) anions averaged 27 mg/g. The Toth adsorption isotherms fairly predicted the equilibrium adsorption of Pd (II) species and the associated surface coverage.The effect of temperature and acid strength of the feed solution on the adsorption of Pd (II) ions were quantified. The adsorption kinetics was limited by external mass transfer since the effect of pore diffusion on the overall rate constant was negligibly small. A pseudo first-order kinetics model was used to describe the adsorption kinetics."

The recently completed modifications and additions to Reserve Mining Company's taconite concentrating process incorporate a totally new control system. Design of the new control scheme is centered on reliability, versatility, centralization, and optimization. The design objectives were achieved through a distributed control system based on a network of independent field located microprocessor based control system connected to a central control room. Operation of each micro-processors can be interrogated and modified from the central control room by the operator or by either of two computer systems. The two computer systems handle logging, alarming, specialized sequenced controls, and complex process optimization routines.

Froth flotation has been shown to be an effective method for reducing Loss-on-Ignition (LOI) of ponded or landfilled fly ash. Reduction of LOI is required for many fly ashes, particularly those produced from low-No, burners, in order to meet ASTM requirements for use as a mineral admixture in Portland cement concrete. An additional ASTM requirement, fineness, is critical in determining end use applicability, and in many cases, classification of fly ash is necessary to produce an acceptable product. Hydraulic classification has been shown to be a simple, cost-effective method for classification of a variety of minerals including silica, phosphate, mica, coal, etc. and has shown to be similarly effective on fly ash. The combination of froth flotation and hydraulic classification facilitate the production of a high quality pozzolan that meets or exceeds ASTM specifications. This combination has been rigorously evaluated and results of pilot-scale testing are presented. Pilot scale testing was conducted on fly ash from two active utility storage ponds and demonstrated that high quality, consistent pozzolan could be produced using APT's Fast Float? Technology. Along with the pozzolan, additional production of aggregate for masonry mortar and a low sulfur, medium Btu fuel were also demonstrated. The Fast Float? process incorporates several simple unit processes to ensure pozzolan consistency; classification controls particle size distribution which is critical to achieving early strength, flotation controls the grade with respect to L.O.I. (Loss on Ignition) while dewatering controls the moisture content.

Metso Minerals Cisa have developed VisiofrothTM - a system which calculates parameters of the froth surface using vision from remote cameras mounted about individual flotation cells. The parameters calculated from this system can be utilised within process control strategies to achieve stabilisation or optimisation of the flotation process. As part of a JKMRC AMIRA P9 field campaign, froth vision was collected from various cells operated at different air rates and froth depths within Rio Tinto's Northparkes copper roughing and scavenging circuit. At the same time, samples were collected to determine the cell metallurgical performance at each operating condition. These froth images have been processed using the VisiofrothTM system with froth velocity, bubble size, froth collapse rate and various froth colour parameters calculated. These parameters have been compared to the measured concentrate flow and concentrate grade produced at each condition. This analysis shows that the concentrate tonnage flow is strongly correlated with froth velocity whereas the concentrate grade is best correlated using froth velocity in combination with a bubble stability parameter which affects the bubble size distribution on the top surface of the froth. This paper summarises the results from this analysis as well as an overview of the VisiofrothTM system and the parameters that are measured by the software.

THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an abandoned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they penetrated the capping and encountered iron ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was discovered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint. GEOLOGY AND ORE The Sunrise district is in the Hartville uplift, an anticlinal area in which pre-Cambrian rocks similar to those of the Black Hills and the Laramie Mountains are brought to the surface. The lowest part of the pre-Cambrian series exposed is a great thickness of pink, crystalline, Huronian dolomites with thin unstratified beds of schist and quartzite. The objective of this paper is to raise awareness of the importance of including “culture” as one of the four pillars of sustainability and to highlight the disjointed nature of the existing concept of sustainability and the goal of that concept. In other words, the conflicting propositions between the western beliefs that set the foundation of the sustainability concept and the eastern beliefs that aims to have sustainability as an end result. The incorporation of “culture” aims to find a balance, which unites these opposite perspectives to result in a more harmonious solution for society.
