Meeting of Apr. 23, 1915.-The Iron and Steel Committee was authorized in its discretion to defer the date of acceptance of papers for the Hadfield Research Prize to Nov. 1, 1916. The sum of $250 was appropriated as a guarantee fund to establish a Library Research Bureau in co-operation with the other Founder Societies. The sum of $50 was appropriated to the Puget Sound Section. The sum of $250 was appropriated to the San Francisco Section. The sum of $125 was appropriated to the St. Louis Section. The matter of memorializing the New York State Constitutional Convention was referred to the New York Section of the Institute with authority to act as a Section only. Upon recommendation of the Committee on Membership, 50 Mem¬bers, 1 Associate, and 6 Junior Members were elected.

A computer program has been developed to simulate evacuation of a mine in various configurations. The simulation input variables include characteristics of the mine, expressed, in the form of a network of passages, properties of hoists and hoisting strategies, initial miner positions, ventilation and compressed air velocities, stench warning system and self rescuer capabilities. The simulation can be carried out for cases in which there is no fire, i. e. , fire drill simulation, or for cases in which there is a fire at any arbitrary location. The fire is assumed to generate gases which impede movement of miners in the gaseous region. However, the thermal effects of the fire are not considered. The simulation output include the evacuation time for each miner, movement of the hoists, propagation of smoke through the mine passages and smoke exposure of the miners. Several illustrative simulations have been carried out to verify validity of the program and to demonstrate its capabilities. The computer program has been able to predict evacuation time, within 5 percent, for an actual fire drill. It is believed that this program can be used to evaluate evacuation performance of a mine, identify problem areas and demonstrate improvements due to the recommended corrective actions.

In this paper an attempt has been made to review the cost trends in producing copper by conventional milling. smelting and hydro-metallurgical means during the last five years. The primary objectives of this cost analysis are to provide a base for future projections as well as to indicate which cost items are more volatile in their influence on overall cost of producing copper.

The term chromite is often used to cover all chrome ores and concentrates which are the designations actually employed by most industrial users and producers. Chromite is, of course, the predominant mineral in chrome ores which are aggregates of chromite and gangue minerals, most commonly magnesian silicates. Most chrome ores now used are petrographically chromitites which is a rock, rather than an individual mineral term. The title of this chapter, following past usage, is meant in the broad sense. Chromite is the only primary commercial source of chromium. This book is intended to deal only with nonmetallic minerals and rocks. Chromite uses are both metallic (ferroalloys) and nonmetallic (refractories and chemicals), but any discussion of mineralogy, geology, and mining is common for all types. A number of the major commercial ores are interchangeable, and their uses are determined by economic considerations. Mineralogy COMPOSITION [Chromite is a term embracing a wide range of chromium-bearing spinel*-group minerals the compositions of which can be expressed as (Mg,Fe2+)0.(Cr,AI,Fe3+ )203.t This can be further generalized to R2+O.R23+03 and the molecular RO: R,03 ratio is generally close to one. The exact composition may be arbitrarily expressed as a solid solution of six end-members, MgAI2O4, MgCr2O4, MgFe2O4 FeCr2O4, FeA12O4, and Fe2+.Fe23+04 with the proportions of each stated or plotted in the six-cornered prism of Johnston and Stevens61 or this scheme may be simplified to comprise only three endmembers making up a composition triangle, Fig 1. Note that the high-alumina chromites (1, 2, 3, 9), form a cluster well apart from the high-Cr2O3 chromites. There is a tendency for high-iron chromites to be higher in Fe2O3 + TiO2 but it is not a consistent or systematic relationship. The MgO/RO ratio must also be known to characterize the chromite chemically. Simplest and most convenient method is Thayer's' in which a chromite such as (Mg.65Fe.352+)O.(Cr.40Al.50Fe.103+)203 would be written as (Mge,) Cr eAlo. IN a general way, the situation in copper smelting is quite similar to that of lead smelting. In other words, the introduction and successful flotation of copper ores has tended to decrease greatly the tonnage to be handled by the smelter and therefore has resulted in curtailed smelter operation. However, copper production has increased rather than decreased. The general effect of flotation has been to decrease the number of furnaces operating, but it has also increased to a considerable extent the difficulties in handling the material, just as was outlined in the case of lead smelting. In copper smelting, the flotation concentrates must be roasted and prepared for the reverberatory furnace. HANDLING FLOTATION CONCENTRATES The handling of copper flotation concentrate, which is more or less wet and mucky, is more difficult than was the handling of the old gravity concentrate. Also, the roasting of the concentrate and the handling of the calcine produced is more difficult. That is mainly because the material is extremely fine and the tendency to higher dust losses is greatly increased. The draft in the roasting furnaces must be kept as low as, possible, and the feeding of the calcine into the reverberatory furnace must be done carefully, so that dust losses may be kept at a minimum. TRANSITION STAGES OF CONCENTRATION AND SMELTING The general process through which the copper smelter has gone as a result of flotation has been somewhat as follows: In the relatively old days, when copper ores of low grade were first treated, a large number of furnaces were required, and naturally comparatively poor recoveries were made. Also, the profits on low-grade ores were small and the handling of those ores was possible only because of the large tonnages. Then came gravity concentration, which was a great improvement but which only incompletely removed the gangue material, the insoluble and the iron, from the copper ore, and made comparatively poor copper recoveries. This still left a considerable amount of insoluble and iron, as well as the copper itself, to be treated at the smelter.

Charts summarize chemical weathering, and the results of metamorphisms. The book also contains many new illustrations, including aerial photographs. A History of Phelps Dodge 1834-1950, by Robert Glass Cleland. Alfred A. Knopf, 1952. $4.00.-The book traces the growth of Phelps Dodge from the day Anson Greene Phelps opened a small saddle shop in Hartford, Conn., to the present day. As the country grew, so did Phelps Dodge. The company took part in large affairs from its very beginning. It bought and sold, exported and imported, built factories and railroads, and widened its scope of operations economically and geographically. Entrance of Phelps Dodge into copper mining and the gradual giving up of other interests in favor of the new venture is traced.

Palabora Mining Company (PMC) processes a multi-component ore body using a circuit consisting of two AG mills in parallel, closed with vibrating double deck screens and hydrocyclones. The bottom screen undersize feeds the hydrocyclones, but the screen oversize products can be treated in a variety of ways. The top deck screen pebbles can be crushed and then combined with the bottom deck oversize and recycled to the AG mill. Alternatively both the top and bottom deck screen oversize can by-pass the recycle crusher and be recycled directly to the mill. A full tap-off is a configuration when both the top and bottom deck screen oversize streams are stockpiled. The other configuration is when the bottom deck screen oversize is recycled to the mill while the top deck screen oversize is stockpiled - termed partial tap-off. This article reports the findings from the surveys performed to evaluate the performance of the PMC auto mill circuit when operated under the four different configurations discussed. Ore characterisation tests were performed to assess the deportment of the key ore components for the different configuration.

INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid, combustible mineral substance resulting from the degradation and alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. In this natural process of coalification, some non-combustible mineral matter is always associated with the combustible material. Coal preparation or cleaning is the process of removing this inert mineral matter from the coal. Preparation is highly successful in removing the large fragments of inert material, but is not very effective in removing the fine inorganic mineral matter intimately associated with the coal. Of the 600 million tons of coal produced in the United States every year, approximately one-half is produced by coal cleaning methods (1). The bulk of this tonnage is cleaned by coarse or intermediate gravity preparation methods (5 inches to 28 mesh, Tyler). Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. The trend in underground room-and-pillar coal mining is to employ remote-control continuous mining machines and extended cuts, 12 m (40 ft) deep or more. This system of coal extraction, adopted by over 435 mines, can create additional worker-safety hazards. To address the ground control and worker-positioning hazards, a combination of statistical analyses and numerical modeling was conducted. Initially, the reported roof-fall incidents and fatalities were reviewed to delineate the ground-control hazards. Then, the application of the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) for estimating safe extended-cut depths was evaluated. Finally, computer modeling to predict roof displacements during extended-cut mining was completed. The paper describes the results of these studies and their impact on the safety of extended-cut mining.

Over a 4 hr period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc, and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit.Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity.In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one-third of the lead losses in the final tails.All sizes of zinc values between 100 mesh and 7 microns floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the minus 7 micron fraction.The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

Mining represents the first industry in the United States to have federally mandated training for its workers. Although the topics to be covered are specified in 30 CFR 48, course content is left to the discretion of the individual mine operators. Unfortunately, certain topics to be covered, such as prevention of accidents, are usually mine specific, making it very difficult to use the same course content in every mine. Further, training requirements may change from one mine to another, due to changes in the demographic characteristics of the workers, or changes in job and organizational characteristics. Therefore, if the intention of safety training is to modify the behavior of workers, it is expected that there should be some changes in the content of safety training programs in order to address the specific requirements of individual mines, or at least mines of similar worker and job characteristics. This study has been directed towards the development of a systems-based procedure for conducting a needs analysis. A special effort was made to understand the psychology of worker behavior by analyzing worker reactions to various organizational and job characteristics.

THE hydraulic properties exhibited by the calcination products of certain limestones were recognized at an early datemore than 2000 years ago. It was known that calcined limestone with the addition of other minerals would react with water and produce an insoluble and stable product. This material could be cast in desired forms or could be used as a cement for the unification of other materials in large masses or for bonding brick or masonry structures. Cements are essentially mineral glues and it is their ability to unify other materials plus their fluidity when first mixed with water, enabling the mass to assume any desired shape, that has made them so extraordinarily useful to modern industry. Like other glues, cements do not exhibit their maximum strength when used alone and only when mixed with proper aggregates do their optimum properties appear. The resulting concrete, a mixture of cement, mineral aggregates and frequently of reinforcing steel, exhibits the most desirable properties of the individual constituents with regard to tensile strength, stability and permanence. The speed with which such mixtures can be -prepared and installed in place with mechanical equipment has facilitated their adoption by the engineering profession concerned with the construction industries. The development and application of improved methods of manufacture have resulted in such economies that the finished product can be sold at a remarkably low price. In addition, the necessary raw materials are of such common occurrence and wide geographic distribution that the manufacture of cement was established in 34 of the 48 states by 1946. Plants under construction will add to this number. In recent years the industry has been characterized by the development of a number of new cements designed to possess special properties essential for use in unusual environments. These have introduced the use of some new raw materials and also have complicated the processes of manufacture. In the following pages, the major varieties of cement of commercial importance are treated in the chronological order of their appearance on the market.

Guard (General Electric Co., Schenectady)— The method of fractional replication discussed by the author has proven very valuable to us in applied research connected with alloy and process development where many of the same experimental difficulties exist. Several of our experiences may be of assistance to those who want to apply the method in these fields. Contrary to the author's observation that interactions are rarely significant, we have found in a number of cases that first order interactions exist which are significant and metallurgically important. This winter I decided to join the other 36 Freeporters who belong to the AIME; and, I applied for membership in the Society of Mining Engineers. To queries as to my interests in the Society, I had this answer: our principal challenge -- more so today, than at any time in my nearly 25 years in the industry -- is discovery and development of new sources of raw materials. I want to join you in meeting this challenge.
