Mr Dillon, we are very appreciative and hope that this is now a standing arrangement. I shall rapidly read their names, but they must all feel assured that they are very welcome here today. Porphyry-type deposits are characterized by mineralization in, as well as adjacent to, an igneous body, usually a porphyritic stock. One deposit style includes both mineral dissemination and mineralized veinlets, and both porphyry copper and porphyry molybdenum deposits are characterized by dissemination and veinlet control of ore minerals. Those gold deposits that occur in stocks, with gold occur- ring in veinlets and disseminations within the stock, clearly are can- didates for consideration as porphyry gold type. Porphyry copper and porphyry molybdenum deposits are also characterized by potassic, phyllic, argillic, orpropyllitic alteration or some combination of these alteration types. Where two or more alteration zones are present, these are arranged in a sequential outcrop pattern. Gold occurring in dissemination and in veinlets in as well as adjacent to stocks, and which also occur in typical pervasive porphyry alteration suits, constitute a clearly defined class of deposit that fits the definition of a porphyry gold type. Porphyry copper deposits may carry appreciable gold. Porphyry copper-gold deposits are known from all porphyry copper provinces. This chapter is intended to cover porphyry gold occurrences that may have little or no copper or molybdenum as economic concentrations.

A variety of chemicals offered by Armak were evaluated as dewatering aids for aqueous slurries of silica sand, sparsand and feldspar; an established commercial dewatering aid was used as a control. A number of Armak's potential dewatering aids yielded lower moisture retention values than did the commercial product on all of the mineral samples. In addition to the chemical dewatering evaluations, some of the mechanisms involved in the removal of water from these mineral samples were examined.

An ingenious methodology purposively developed by the authors for comprehensive assessment of flotation properties, electrophysical characteristics and. crystal chemistry features of natural gold-bearing sulfide minerals of different origin has been used in this study. Examination of the elemental composition of the minerals, ion-molecular components of the liquid phase in suspensions, surface properties of sulfides and different flotation reagents sorption forms was performed using the methods of X-ray phase and spectral analysis, potentiometry, UV and IR spectrometry, computer image analysis, and computer simulation techniques. The role of isomorphous impurities in the formation of hydrophobic sulfhydric collector layers on mineral surfaces in complex ore processing has been elucidated. The parameters characterizing the variability of the Fe:S ratio in pyrite of different origin have been determined based on non-stoichiometry characteristics of natural gold-bearing sulfide crystals. An ingenious method of formatting and linear approximation of experimental data was used to find out the quantitative relationships between the impurity content, electrophysical characteristics, non-stoichiometry and floatability of pyrite from a number of different deposits. The effect of the impurity species present in sulfides on the characteristic pH value marking the floatability peaks as such and their trend of shift towards higher alkalinity has been revealed. A theoretical substantiation has been given to prognostic assessment criteria for processing characteristics of gold-bearing sulfide minerals with varying composition. New flotation reagents and advanced reagent systems which help to increase the contrast of processing characteristics for different gold-bearing sulfides, resulting in improved selectivity, have been developed. The mechanism of selective flotation of precious metal-bearing Fe and As sulfides achieved by using short-chain dithiocarbamates and a mixture of cyclic trithiocarbonate with oxyalkylsulfides has been analyzed.

"Background:The recorded coal production in Nova Scotia from 1863 to 1980 was 390, 000, 000 short tons. This extraction was associated with an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of discarded material. This mining discard and coal washing plant reject are located in numerous, varying sized dumps throughout the mining areas. Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Sydney coal field region of Nova Scotia.The coal content of these dumps varies from 10 to 30% coal with an average of 18%.Energy Costs:The explosion of energy costs in the mid-1970 's greatly increased the sale price of thermal coal which made recovery of coal from some of the dumps economical. The environmental spin-off of these operations will be the rehabilitation of the dumps upon cessation of the coal reclamation operation.Cape Breton Development Corporation, the owner of most of the dumps in the Sydney coal field was receptive to an approach by Selco of reclaiming coal from their dumps. The technology to be used, had been developed by an associate firm in the United Kingdom on similar mine dump situations."

Mine seals can be remotely constructed in underground coal mines, through vertical boreholes, when direct access to a fire is impossible or considered to be too dangerous. This method has great merit because boreholes can be drilled to specific mine areas and seals can be positioned close to a fire zone. The technology however, can be largely ineffective if the constructed seals do not provide effective barriers to airflow or cannot be used to impound water and other inert materials. Unfortunately, no viable alternatives exist to sealing the entire mine at the ground surface. Full-scale remote mine seal construction research is being conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Under this effort, Howard Concrete Pumping Company and GAI Consultants, Inc. have joined forces to evaluate a potentially significant improvement to the current state-of-the-art. This paper will cover development of novel technology for remote mine seal construction, evaluation of the materials used, construction practice, and follow-up testing.

"Hundreds of diamonds have been found in the United States. The majority of the discoveries occurred during the 19th century as a by-product of placer gold mining. Most of these early diamond finds have no known source, and in many cases are situated in areas unfavorable for diamond exploration based on current models that require kimberlite or lamproite to be emplaced in a stable Archean craton or Proterozoic craton margin.Diamonds have also been recovered in situ from lamproite at Murfreesburo, Arkansas, from kimberlite in the Lake Ellen region of Michigan, and in several kimberlites in the Colorado–Wyoming State Line district. Unverifed reports also suggest that diamonds may have been recovered from other related intrusions at a number of localities in the United States.IntroductionTo date, diamonds have been recovered in situ from kimberlite in the Colorado–Wyoming State Line district and from a kimberlite in Michigan. Additionally, diamonds have been recovered from lamproites in Arkansas. Diamonds have also been reported from kimberlite in Kansas, and from peridotite in New York and Maryland. However, these latter reports have not been verified."

The Institute makes liberal provision for inclusion of engineering students through individual Student Associate membership. Such members pay $2 per year, receive MINING AND METALLURGY, may purchase Technical Publications at reduced rates, have the privilege of attending all meetings and are furnished a distinctive badge in the form of a watch fob. Provision is also made for the affiliation of organized student societies in recognized schools of engineering chemistry, geology and related sciences. In order to qualify for affiliation it is not necessary that all members of the society become Student Associates since the individual members of the society are not listed as members of the Institute However, a large majority of the members of many of the societies are also Student Associate Members of the Institute. Among the things that the Institute does for the affiliated societies are the following: (a) A copy of each issue of MINING AND METALLURGY is furnished to the society; (b) Reports of the meetings and activities of the society are reported in MINING AND METALLURGY; (c) Assistance is given by the Institute in obtaining speakers for the meetings of the society; (d) The name of the society and of its officers is listed in the annual Directory and other publications of the Institute; and (e) Members of the society are given the use of the Engineering Societies Employment Service. Student organizations, desiring to be recognized as affiliated student societies of the Institute, should make application to the Secretary, giving particulars as to the nature of their organization, of their membership, and their officers. Mining has always been among the most hazardous of occupations, and with the increasing demand for coal and minerals, safety in mines assumes even greater importance. Worldwide, underground miners are being exposed to noise and respirable dust hazards associated with roof bolt drilling. These hazards are now being understood to cause irreparable damage to the health of miners. The objective of this research was to discover if a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) drill bit generates less respirable dust and hazardous noise than a competing tungsten carbide (WC) bit in dry vacuum drilling. In order to control the drill parameters the drilling tests were conducted in a laboratory setting. The results were obtained by determining the quantities of dust and noise generated using each drill bit and analyzing those levels, using monitoring devices and software to collect the data. This paper includes information on the experimental setup, equipment used, drilling parameters, and data collected. Our results indicate that PDC bits produce significantly less noise and dust than WC bits. Our findings can contribute to improving the working conditions of rock bolter operators by reducing noise and dust generation.

If a fire occurs outby an underground coal mine section, the immediate safe evacuation of miners from the working section should always be the first action during the rescue operation. Unfortunately, in many cases, the escape-ways (escape routes) dedicated for miners' evacuation are contaminated with fire byproducts from adjacent entries. The purpose of this paper is to present the ventilation control process that will maintain the escape-way free from contaminants and available for travel. Several scenarios in a different section on ventilation system arrangements are analyzed, discussed and presented. To perform these studies, the author used a mine-fire simulator, which provides a dynamic (in real time) representation of the fire's progress and also gives a display, a color-graphic visualization, of the spread of combustion products throughout the ventilation system. Presented and discussed in this paper, also, are ways in which the mine-fire simulator can be used as a training and teaching tool for miners and, particularly, for ventilation and safety personnel.

In this paper the effect of humic substances (natural surfactants), electrolytes and solid particles on bubble coalescence, and as a consequence on froth stability, has been investigated. We formed two bubbles of equal size and forced them to collide using a novel experimental apparatus. The interactions were recorded by a high-speed camera, the images of which helped to determine the coalescence frequency and the coalescence time, as well as the mechanisms of the interactions. Two types of humic substances were used, along with three different electrolytes. Humic substances appeared to have a considerable effect on bubble coalescence, while the effect of electrolytes was minimal. Moderate and high hydrophobic glass spheres were used between two bubbles. Very hydrophobic spheres promoted fast bubble coalescence, while moderate hydrophobic spheres had no effect. We present data of coalescence frequency and time, as well as images of the coalescence events.

To provide thermodynamic data for converting the nickel matte to liquid nickel, an experimental study was conducted in the phase equilibrium between the Ni-S alloy and the CaO-Al2O3 based slag melted in a MgO crucible at 1873 K under controlled Pso2 of 10.1 kPa and Po2 in a range between 2.5x 10-and 10.1 Pa by using CO-CO2-SO2 gas mixtures. The content of nickel in the slag at Po, of 10.1 Pa, above which solid NiO is expected to precipitate in the equilibrium state, was found to be 4, I mass% and the contents of sulfur and oxygen in the nickel melt were 0.4 and 02 mass%, respectively. ft was clarified that increase in the temperature reduces the solubility of nickel in the slag and the contents of sulfur and oxygen in the alloy, The distribution of minor elements such as gold, silver, copper, cobalt, iron, arsenic and antimony between the Ni-S alloy and the CaO-Al2O3 based slag was also studied. The distribution ratios of iron and cobalt, defined by (%X in slag)/[%X in alloy] where X is the minor element, are larger values than that of nickel, while those of copper, silver and antimony are similar to that of nickel. The distribution ratios of arsenic and gold are lower than that of nickel in the higher range of oxygen partial pressure.

"Mineral processes are complex operations that have been modelled, controlled and simulated by diverse technologies. A review is given of some models of mineral processes in the literature. A new variation of a dynamic process model of flotation is presented. Process models, describing real and relevant physical variables, give a good understanding and good qualitative simulations, but can sometimes require prohibitively difficult and extensive parameter estimations. Process control is usually best done on operational plants by the fitting of system models, which can home in on the plant?s observability, controllability and optimisation. System models can be of a form amenable for use in appropriate techniques for controller design and implementation. The control of milling circuits is discussed in some detail. While simulators use models to predict dynamic or steady-state information, part of their strength lies in their ease of use and their ability to test different types of specifications. Some results are given for a flotation circuit simulator that can be made to solve virtually any permutation of specifications.INTRODUCTIONThe development and application of appropriate technology can lead to better operation of mineral processing plants in industry, so that substantial benefits can be obtained from improved throughputs, efficiencies and product qualities. This paper addresses some of the principles and methods used in the quest for the development and exploitation of such technology. Although the design of processes is often the motivation for modelling and simulation, this paper also targets the use of modelling and simulation for the control and optimum operation of mineral processes. The two processes given the most attention here are flotation and milling.Technologies used in mineral processing range from simple to very complex. Simple technical principles, such as mass and component balances, can yield some simple and effective strategies for modelling and control. However, minerals in particulate form have such complex physical and chemical properties that there appears no end to the complexity that emerges, as more and more factors are taken into consideration in the pursuit of better results and understanding. The situation is aggravated by the complexity of mineral processing plants, which have spatially variable conditions within process units, and complicated interactions between these units."

The system concept is to minimize costly unscheduled equipment breakdowns by replacing components earlier than their life expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to preset constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can account for all man-hours reported, and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better manpower utilization and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

During in situ uranium mining using ammonium bicarbonate lixiviant, the ammonium exchanges with cations on the ore's clay. After mining is complete, the ammonium may desorb into post-leach ground water. For the particular ore studied, other elements (uranium and selenium) that are mobilized during the leaching process, have also been found in post-leach ground water. Laboratory column tests, used to simulate the leaching process, have shown that aluminum chloride can rapidly remove ammonium from the ore and, thus, greatly reduce the subsequent ammonium leakage level into ground water. The aluminum chloride has also been found to reduce the leakage levels of uranium and selenium. In addition, the aluminum chloride treatment produces a rapid increase in permeability.
