Seafloor hydrothermal deposits are found worldwide at 700 to 3,600 meters below sea level [1] and contain base and precious metals like Cu, Pb, Zn, Au, and Ag. Some deposits were found in the Japanese exclusive economic zone and the commercial potential will depend on developments in mining and treatment costs of onshore mines. The ores require mineral processing to become concentrate for the various metal smelters and the authors are investigating mineral processing treatments of collected samples. The collected samples were classified into three components (chimney, mounds, and substrate rocks) and they were separated using a RETAC jig. The mound component contains zinc, lead, and copper minerals and further separation using flotation was investigated. This paper introduces results of the mineral processing tests using gravity separation and flotation.

Mineralogy is a significant scientific discipline, essential in establishing the nature and the character of raw materials, regardless of whether they are monomineral or polymineral. Mineralogical characterization is very important, because its results give valuable information on features and nature of examined materials. Information&apos;s on mineralogical nature of mineral raw materials influence directly the quality assessment of a raw material, and thus the possibility of its use. The possibility of use of mineralogy in different industrial branches confirms constant activity of this scientific discipline. By use of methods within mineralogical analysis (optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction and others) data on mineral raw materials can be obtained as support in mineral raw materials quality assessment. Short description of results of mineralogical analysis of some mineral materials (granodiorite, dolomites, clay, refractory materials, slags and casting powders) in this paper shows the importance of its support to quality assessment and determine the possibilities of their use.

Polymetallic nodules are a widespread resource in the Pacific Ocean, particularly in the areas of Clarion-Clipperton (Cronan, 2000). The most abundant mineral phases are forme d by iron and manganese oxides, with minor elements such as nickel, copper, cobalt, molybdenum and rare earths elements (Cronan, 1977; Cronan and Moorby, 1981; Iyer and Sharma, 1990; Mangini et al. 1990; Banerjee et al. 1991). In the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), several authors mention that there are three main mineral species of manganese oxides, which have been recognized and which are associated with different processes of formation: todorokita (Mn2+, Ca, Mg) Mn3 4+ O7. H2), vernadite dMnO and birnessite enriched in Fe and (Na, Ca) 0.5 (Mn4+, Mn3+) 2O4. 1.5 H2O. In nodules of hydrothermal origin have been found todorokite, birnessite, vernadite, goethite and pyrolusite. Although there are many oxides and hydroxides of manganese and iron in amorphous and microcrystalline phases that make up the bulk of the nodule (Frondel et al. 1960; Cronan 1977; Dymond 1981; Calvert and Piper, 1984; Aplin and Cronan, 1985; Martin and Lallier, 1993; Achurra et al. 2009), identifying specific mineral phases is difficult due to the intergrowth of different phases and associated detrital material.

The purpose of the research is to explore this novel foundation method, which involves the installation of closely spaced piles in a perimeter arrangement with a body of soil enclosed in the centre. Both centrifuge modelling and numerical modelling techniques are used.

Flash flotation is a process designed to remove coarse, liberated, fast floating minerals from hydrocyclone underflow. Irrespective of liberation, coarse particles would normally remain in a grinding circuit until they are reground fine enough to report to the hydrocyclone overflow. Additionally, minerals of high density also report to hydrocyclone underflow despite being fine in size and/or liberated because hydrocyclones separate on the characteristics of both particle size and density. Dense particles continually reporting to the hydrocyclone underflow can lead to over-grinding and the production of ultra fine particles. These particles exhibit slow flotation kinetics and thus are difficult to float in conventional flotation circuits. Therefore, removing coarse, liberated particles from the hydrocylcone underflow by flash flotation has the potential to improve recovery and can improve dewatering unit operations and reduce grinding costs.The impact on the overall performance of the flotation circuit by removing coarse, fast floating minerals prior to conventional flotation is not well understood. Ultimately, predicting the overall recovery improvement provides the justification for the installation of a flash flotation cell within the milling circuit. Installation procedure and the quality of the material used in the construction have significant effects on the behavior of the Auger Cast in Place (ACIP) piles. In this study, Installation and curing of a 760 mm (30 in.) diameter and 12 m (39 ft) long ACIP pile with a design capacity of 1140 kN (128 tons) in hard clay was investigated. Construction quality was monitored using the automated monitoring system where the volume of grout pumped and the pressures were monitored with depth. The curing of the pile was monitored using axial vibrating wire strain gages at four levels and lateral vibrating wire strain gages at two levels. The residual strain and temperature profile in the curing pile was monitored over a period of week to determine the appropriate time for load testing the pile. Axial behavior of Auger Cast in Place (ACIP) Piles in hard clay was studied using full scale load test on an instrumented pile. The load-settlement and load transfer relationships of the pile was investigated based on the load test results. Development of skin friction in the load test pile and the reaction pile was also investigated.

"A single unit gas fired power station was being built on the edge of the Gulf of Thailand in 2001. The soil conditions consisted of very soft to soft Holocene Marine Clay, and the site was part of a coast line which had been subsiding below high water mark for some time. In order to provide access around the power station a road system in a figure-of-eight formation was required, and this also needed to be above the design flood level, allowing for future settlement. A ground improvement scheme was proposed and constructed, which consisted of two spacings of prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) over two depth ranges, vacuum consolidation and pre-loading, and rigid inclusions.During the construction phase, the vacuum consolidation was applied for 202 to 221 days in different zones, and monitoring allowed a prediction that the future settlement, including secondary consolidation over a period of 25 years, would be within the range of 175 to 355 mm, which met the contract requirement of less than 400 mm.The power plant was completed and became operational in 2003. Monitoring of the road levels continued, as did the settlement, and in early 2010 the total settlement since the end of vacuum consolidation had reached about 800 mm. The monitoring data both during the ground treatment and for the following 7 years is presented and analysed. This is supported by numerical analysis using 3D finite element methods which shows good agreement with the measured data, and allows a preliminary explanation as to why the predictions were so far out.BACKGROUNDAfter a period of bidding and negotiation, the Eastern Power and Electric Co Ltd (EPEC), an Independent Power Producer, entered into an agreement with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) in November 1997 to sell them power. In 1999 an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract and an Operation and Maintenance contract were signed with a supplier to provide a gas-fired (with oil as a back-up fuel) 350 MW combined cycle power plant in Bang Bo, Samut Prakarn Province, east of Bangkok. The site of the plant at Bang Bo is located immediately to the east of the Samut Prakarn Wastewater Treatment Plant, adjacent to the Gulf of Thailand (see Figure 1) in an area of very soft to soft marine clay (Bangkok clay) having low shear strength and potential for excessive settlement. The site layout comprises the main Power Plant components of generating block, cooling towers, fuel unloading area and storage tanks, switchyard and administration block, separated by access roads."

This paper details a 2MLD ion exchange water treatment plant which selectively removes arsenic, antimony, iron, hardness, and sulphate from mining water; designed to meet environmental quality indicators such as sulphates. The client, Fosterville Gold Mine Pty Ltd, is owned by Kirkland Lake Gold and is one of the world’s highest grade gold mines. The site located near Melbourne, Australia had identified a risk of reduced mine water storage capacity due to surface run-off and increased sulphate rich dewatering of the underground mine at depth. Clean TeQ Water carried out the project management, process design, procurement, and commissioning for the plant, which was handed over in August 2020.

THE high prices which lead and zinc have commanded during recent months have given a great impetus to search for workable deposits of these metals, and there has accordingly risen a demand for information about deposits which have been worked in the past and which might possibly be opened up anew under these more favorable conditions. Production of zinc and lead in Canada has been on the increase during the last few years. In 1924, 175,- 485,499 lb. of lead with a computed value of $14,221,- 345 were mined. Of this, 96 per cent. was produced in British Columbia, 3 per cent. in Ontario, while Quebec and the Mayo district of the Yukon accounted for the remaining one per cent. During the same year the production of zinc amounted to 98,909,077 lb.. valued at $6,274,791. Of this 96,000,069 lb. were produced in British Columbia and the remaining 2,909,008 in Quebec. The large producer of zinc and also of lead is the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, B. C. In comparison with the Sullivan, the deposits which are known to occur in eastern Canada are relatively small. Two, however, the Kingdoll lead mine at Galetta, Ontario, and the Tetreault zinc property at Notre Dame des Anges, Quebec, are steady producers. The object of this paper is to describe briefly these and other deposits of eastern Canada, to show their relation to geological events and to point out what are the chances of any of those which are idle at present developing into active producers or what are the possibilities of new deposits being discovered.

NATURE endowed the Niagara Frontier with great resources but it was the molding of these resources by the early pioneers that assured its future development. This great industrial district of New York stretches along about fifty miles of shore line on the eastern end of Lake Erie and the Niagara River, embracing the two counties of Erie and Niagara, with the city of Buffalo about in the center. This location at the junction of the eastern end of the Great Lakes and the western boundary of the State, a great focal point of land and water, transportation, guaranteed the development of the Frontier. Although the first white settlers came to this section in 1784, it was not until after the turn of the nineteenth century that real development started. Perhaps the most significant influence in the early days was the completion of the Erie Canal between Buffalo and Albany in 1825. THE program of government drilling, conducted jointly by the U. S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, has demonstrated the presence in Texas and New Mexico of potash-bearing beds of considerable importance. Information regarding the ex- tent and location of the potash deposits as presented at the non-metallic sessions was of great interest to many engineers. These subjects will be covered in greater detail in later paragraphs. The first session, with about 50 in attendance, convened at 10 a.m. on Feb. 18, with Oliver Bowles, chair- man of the Committee on Non-Metallic Minerals, pre- siding. The first paper was on "Soapstone Mining In Virginia," presented by C. W. Ryan of Lynchburg, Va. The nature and extent of the soapstone deposits of Nelson County were described in some detail. In origin, the soapstone is undoubtedly related to a basic peridotite rock though its mode of formation is some- what uncertain. This main soapstone deposit occurs in three veins, the western, middle, and eastern, the middle vein being of greatest economic importance. Methods of stripping, quarrying and milling the rock were described and the uses of soapstone were enum- erated. In discussing this paper, C. P. Berkey, of Co- lumbia University strongly favored the theory of igneous origin of the soapstone and the need for further detailed geological study. J. L. Gillson of Cambridge, Mass., stated that the Vermont and New York talc deposits were always associated with characteristic minerals, such as, a chlorite of one particular variety, siderite, amphibole, magnetite, and biotite. C. H. Behre of Cincinnati, Ohio, raised the question of parallelism in the soapstone structure and Mr. Ryan stated that such parallelism was in evidence in some parts of the deposits. H. A. Wheeler of St. Louis, Mo., also took &apos;part in the discussion.

EVERY producer of crude oil knows what is meant by the Rule or Law of Capture. It means that the ultimate ownership of a migratory substance such as oil is not determined until that substance is reduced to physical possession. Unless, therefore, the producer moves quickly to capture his share from the common pool, he may lose to any neighbor who is drilling and producing more rapidly than he a portion of the oil originally underlying his property. And there is no recourse open to him if his property is so drained. Under this rule it is obvious that the owner of an oil property, if he is to protect his&apos; ownership, must be governed in his development and production policies by the activities of his neighbor rather than by his own business requirements. He must drill as densely and as fast as the other operators in the field or lose part of the oil to which he should be entitled.

WHEN scientific literature was lacking or meager, research necessarily meant laboratory investigation above all else. Today, scientific literature has attained tremendous proportions, and the volume increases at a much faster rate than it is digested and efficiently utilized. For that reason the present-day research worker should spend much more time in the library, and correspondingly less in the laboratory, than is the general custom. Library research would overcome two serious errors often made by scientists: duplication of work described completely and failure to appreciate inventions described almost verbatim in the literature. To emphasize these failings that often occur in present-day research, consider a hypothetical scientist as he conducts his search from inception to the stage where it is made available to the public by patent or other publication.
