MISSOURI SCHOOL OF MINES On the tenth of January, 1919, a meeting was held by the juniors and seniors for the purpose of reorganizing the Missouri Mining Association. The reorganization was brought about in this manner because at that time there were no old members left in school. At that meeting, the following officers were elected for the remainder of the year: Gerald F. Rackett, president, Harland H. Hoppock, Secretary. The Association has held several interesting meetings and is arranging interesting programs for some to be held in the future. At present the Association has thirty-four members. H. H. Dust formation and reaction mechanisms of copper matte particles were investigated in simulated flash oxidation conditions. The granulated and ground matte consisted of 72 wt% Cu, 4 wt% Fe and 21 wt% S. Experiments were conducted by using a laminar-flow furnace with a reaction gas composition ranging from 20 vol% to 75 vol% O2 in nitrogen. The particle feeding was carried out by the single-particle method and samples were quenched after a specified reaction time (approximately 0.05-004 s) in a cold water film. Experimental temperatures were between 800 and 1300°C. Chemical analysis was used to determine oxidation degree, and an optical and scanning electron microscope combined with energy dispersive analysis was used for characterization of the reacted particles.

The sudden, violent collapse of large areas of room-and-pillar mines poses a special hazard to miners and mine operators. This type of failure, termed a "Cascading Pillar Failure" (CPF), occurs when one pillar in a mine layout fails transfering its load to neighboring pillars causing them to fail, and so forth. Recent examples of this kind of failure in coal, metal and nonmetal mines in the U.S. are documented. Mining engineers can limit the danger posed by these failures through improved mine design practices. Whether failure occurs in a slow, nonviolent manner or in a rapid, violent manner is governed by the local mine stiffness stability criterion. This stability criterion is used as the basis for three design approaches to control cascading pillar failure in room-and-pillar mines, namely, the containment approach, the prevention approach, and the full extraction mining approach. These design approaches are illustrated with practical examples for coal mining.

In engineering design of operator?s compartments, in underground mining equipment, ergonomics principles are often neglected or not given the full recognition they deserve. This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra-low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomics principles within the collective design process, ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost-effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity.

1. Book reviews ? Second International Conference on Hydrocyclones. Cranfield (Bedford, MK43 OAT, England), BHRA Fluid Engineering Centre, 1984. £33. Reviewer: R.P. King This volume contains the 28 papers presented at the Second International Conference on Hydrocyclones, which was held in Bath (England) in September 1984. The format and presentation of the papers are similar to those of the first volume in the series, and this volume con¬tinues the series as an authoritative account of much of the research work associated with hydrocyclones that is being undertaken throughout the world. The volume was produced from camera-ready copy supplied by the authors, but the quality of reproduction is very high and both text and figures are legible throughout the volume. Although most of the work reported deals with the hydrocyclone as a classification device, important sections are devoted to liquid-liquid separations and heavy¬medium separations.

Pillars with width to height ratios of less than 1.0 are frequently created in underground hard rock mines. The strength of slender pillars can be estimated using empirically developed equations. However, the equations can provide variable results when the width-to-height ratios approach 0.5. This paper investigates some of the issues affecting pillar strength at low width-to-height ratios in hard brittle rock. The investigation includes an evaluation of empirical pillar strength data presented in the literature and observations of pillar performance in underground limestone mines in the eastern United States, supplemented by numerical modeling in which failure processes and sensitivity of slender pillars to variations in rock mass properties are evaluated. The results showed that the strength of slender pillars is more variable than that of wider pillars. The numerical model results demonstrated the increasing role of brittle rock failure in slender pillar strength. The absence of confinement in slender pillars can result in a fully brittle failure process, while wider pillars fail in a combined brittle and shearing mode. The onset of spalling in slender pillars occurs at or near the ultimate strength, while this is not the case for wider pillars. Slender pillars are shown to be more sensitive to the presence of discontinuities than wider pillars, which can partly explain the increased variability of slender pillar strength. Two examples are presented, which illustrate failure initiation by brittle spalling and the sensitivity of slender pillars to the presence of discontinuities.

"Movement of mill charge in the centrifugal mill is essentially different from that in the vibration mill with circular path despite the apparently similar mode in the motion of mill body. As proved e.g. in [11], this results in substantial advantage regarding the comminution intensity of the centrifugal mill over the conventional vibration mill accounting approximately to one order of magnitude.Back in 1983, Bradley et al. presented a model of the centrifugal mill based on the kinetics of the mill charge by regarding it as a lumped mass. On the other hand, numerical modeling by ‘discrete element method (DEM)’ enabled us to observe the movement of each ball in the centrifugal mill with an extremely minute time intervals (Inoue et al., XX IMPC in 1997). The former approach rendered simple, even though approximate, expression of the mill behavior, while the latter method was advantageous in describing the behavior of the mill in terms of individual events taking place in the mill body, even though the result did not reduce to a simple expression. The characteristics of the centrifugal mill described by both these approaches proved to be in a degree of agreement. Thus, the kinetic approach was capable of presenting the overall view of the mill, while the DEM model was informative of the details that could not be depicted well enough by the simple math expressions."

The gradual increase in Cr2O3 levels of UG-2 ores has become a matter of concern for platinum producers in South Africa due to the formation of chromite spinels in melters. The effect of bulk FeOx/MgO ratio, Cr2O3, temperature and oxygen partial pressure on phase stability and composition in the system FeOx-MgOSiO2- Cr2O3-Al2O3-CaO has been studied between 1400°C and 1600°C using the drop-quench technique. An increase in temperature was found to result in a decrease in [Fe/Cr]spinel. An increase in bulk FeOx/MgO caused Mg, Al and Cr in spinel to decrease, forming more magnetite relative to other spinels. [Fe]spinel decreased and [Cr]glass increased with a decrease in oxygen partial pressure.

"Comminution is the most energy intensive operation which constitutes the major portion of operating and capital costs of the mineral processing plants. Working at the maximum operating capacity of comminution equipment plays a significant role in the efficiency of the circuit. Appropriate design of cone crusher feed box could result in the choked crushing which is known as a vital factor in achieving target performance. In this research, the non-uniform cone crusher feeding at the Sarcheshmeh copper complex was studied and appropriate measures were taken to solve the problem. The problem resulted in non-uniform and high wear rate of crusher liners and high fluctuations of power draw. In recent decades, the discrete element method (DEM) has been applied successfully to study the effect of different factors on the behavior of particles flow. In this work, various designs for feed box were tested using an in-house developed DEM software called KMPCDEM©. The best feed box design obtained from the simulations was selected, constructed and installed in of the cone crushers. The new feed box design resulted in more uniform feed distribution on the distributor plate of crusher indicated by a reduction of the standard deviation of power draw measurements from 13 to 3 kWh. The better control of the crusher, 49% increase in the crusher throughput and finer and narrower product size distribution were the main outcomes of the installation of the new feed box. Furthermore, the wear rate on mantle and liners of crusher not only decreased but it also became uniform.INTRODUCTION Comminution is the most energy intensive operation which constitutes the major portion of operating and capital costs of the mineral processing plants. Reaching the maximum operating capacity in comminution equipment is a key sign of approaching the nominal productivity of the process. Due to the effect of crusher efficiency on the downstream circuit performance, optimization of the crushing circuits has received considerable attention (Herbst, & Potapov, 2004; Quist, & Evertsson, 2010; Li, Huiqi, McDowell, Glenn R, Lowndes and Ian, 2014; Cleary, Sinnott, Morrison, Cummins, & Delaney, 2017). Improving the performance of crushing circuits not only decreases the capital and operating costs but also increases the efficiency of downstream grinding circuits (Jacobson, Janssen, & Urbinatti, 2010). In cone crushers particles can be subjected to two different modes of compressive breakage; single particle breakage (free feeding) and inter-particle breakage (choked feeding). The maximum efficiency of the cone crusher directly depends on the type of feeding arrangement (Operation Manual, 1977). An appropriate feeding must lead to choked feeding the cone crusher. If the rate and method of feeding the crushers are correctly be executed, the maximum efficiency of the crushers could be available (Jacobson et al., 2010)."

THE literature of milling is replete with papers devoted to the subject of ball milling, all of which no doubt have contributed in one way or another to progress in that art. In this paper reference will be made to only a few of the many authors, but the value of the contributions of all who have written on that subject is hereby acknowledged. With a few exceptions the efforts of most students of the subject have been devoted to laboratory investigations of principles. Davis1 was one of the first to report on plant-scale investigations and to present to mill men certain criteria for the guidance of ball-milling practices. His conclusions with respect to the significance of sizing analyses of classifier sands in their relation to the factors of mill speed and ball sizing are particularly referred to. Those conclusions were: I. If the balls are large or the speed of the mill is high, crowding will appear at the finer sizes in the classifier sands. 2. If the balls are small or the speed is low, crowding will appear at the coarser sizes in the classifier sands. 3. The indications are that best efficiency is obtained when the screen analysis of the sands show a minimum crowding at any size. The last conclusion was qualified by the statement that it had not been proved conclusively. It is surprising, however, that the literature of later years reveals little evidence that millmen have made any serious attempt to apply those criteria. This may, perhaps, be explained by the fact that the average plant-scale ball-milling problem presents so many variables that an investigation of any one of them encounters the problem of control of the others-a problem that often is unsurmountable in a small plant. In a large plant, in which there is a duplication of grinding units in parallel operation, opportunity may be afforded for determining the value of such criteria. Nevertheless, a study of published data from grinding circuits of both large and small plants suggests that either Davis' criteria have been tried and found inapplicable or have never been given consideration. For the purpose of testing Davis' conclusions and with improvement of ball-milling efficiency as the final objective, a test program was initiated in the concentrator of the New Cornelia branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation early in 1938. The practices of that plant have already been described .2 The fine-grinding units are arranged so that any one of eight units may be operated as a test unite and its results compared with those of the remaining units. All units receive similar feed from a common storage bin, in which the product of the fine-crushing plant is bedded by traveling tripper. The ball mills are all similar in size and operated at the same speeds, and are individually metered. The feeder conveyors of each unit are equipped with Merrick weightometers. "Research projects towards developing a sound understanding of the factors controlling the performance of gravity thickeners have been conducted by the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy since 1988 through AMIRA International. The current phase of this work, the three year P266D “Improving Thickener Technology” project, has 27 sponsors comprising mineral processing companies, reagent suppliers and thickener manufacturers.These projects have resulted in the development of a range of tools and techniques to address flocculation, thickening and associated dewatering issues. A number of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models have been developed to predict likely full-scale thickener performance under various process conditions, based upon a knowledge of thickener design, plant flows and assessment of the flocculation behaviour of the feed slurry. At the same time, various laboratory and plant studies have been used to quantify important thickener processes, and to provide validation of the CFD models. These numerical and experimental capabilities have been applied to various thickener issues across a broad range of mineral processing operations, leading to significant process improvements and substantial financial benefits.This paper presents an overview of the work conducted during these projects, focussing on the research tools, the nature of the information that has been gained and the implications for thickener performance."

"Preliminary tests were done to determine whether comminution by electric-pulse disaggregation, or E-PD (cf. Rudashevsky et al; 1995), was more effective than using conventional crushing for Merensky Reef ore. A hand sample of the Merensky Reef was sawn in two: then one sub-sample was comminuted to .2 mm using E-PD at the University of Minnesota, and the other sub-sample was crushed to .2 mm using a conventional jaw crusher at CANMET.The products of the electric-pulse disaggregation and jaw crusher were fractionated by sieving and by a separation using a heavy liquid with a specific gravity of 3.3, because the proportion of platinum-group minerals (PGM) and sulphides to silicate minerals is very low. Thus, four mineral separates were produced: .2000 + 833 µm, -833 +208 µm, -208-µm float and -208-µm sink. All the mineral separates were studied by image analysis (Lastra et al; 1998). The main objective was to determine the liberation of gangue (silicate minerals), chromite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pentlandite and PGM. In the case of the PGM, a specific image analysis program was written to search and measure these minerals.The results show that the liberation obtained for gangue was similar (~99%) using either method of comminution. However, the liberation obtained for chromite (~89% vs. ~38%), pentlandite (~50% vs. 1%), pyrrhotite (~56% vs. ~38%), and PGM (~56% vs. ~1%) by E-PD was higher than that obtained by conventional jaw crusher, whereas the liberation obtained for chalcopyrite (~20% vs. ~71%) by E-PD was lower. Nevertheless, the image analysis of the products also showed that the PGM are strongly associated with pentlandite. Thus, for the Merensky Reef, liberation of pentlandite from the gangue minerals and chromite is important to recover more of the PGM. This maybe be significant because, in addition to increased recovery of platinum-group minerals (PGM), Merensky Reef pentlandite also contains significant quantities of valuable platinum-group elements like Pd and Rh (Cabri, 1981; Cabri 1988, Kinloch 1982, Peyerl 1983). Hence, the results indicate that for the Merensky Reef, electric-pulse disaggregation would represent a better comminution operation than a conventional jaw crusher would. In addition, the greatly improved liberation for chromite may find application for the PGM-rich UG2 chromitite."

Geologically and commercially, the term diatomite is applied to the nearly pure sedimentarv accumulation of diatom frustules- the microscopic skeletons of unicellular aquatic algae belonging to the class of golden brown algae, bacillariophyceae. The sediments are fine-grained, siliceous, and consist primarily of amorphous opaline silica with only minor amounts of organic residue, secondary minerals, and co-deposited non-diatomaceous or crystalline clastic debris. In the geological sense, the name diatomite implies sedimentary accumulations that have reached appreciable thickness and when thick enough, such accumulations consequently may have possible commercial potential. Although the term diatomite is popularly and inappropriately applied to any sediment in which there is an abundance of diatom frustules, alternative terminology is more correctly employed to describe the less pure diatomaceous sediments, for example: clay-bearing diatomite or diatom-bearing clay. Synonyms in current usage include diatomaceous earth and kieselghur. More antiquated and obsolete terminology includes tripoli-powder, tripolite, and infusorial earth. Worldwide, diatomites occur within Tertiary to Recent lacus- trine and marine sedimentary facies. Although diatomite is wide- spread throughout the world, deposits that contain high purity, commercially versatile ore are uncommon. Physical properties of the diatom and of processed diatomite that provide unique commercial value in a broad spectrum of market end-uses include ornate fine structure, low bulk density, and high porosity and surface area. Properties of equal importance are mild abrasiveness, high absorptive capacity, insulating ability, relative inertness, and high brightness. End-use markets are diverse and range from insulating brick and absorbents through quality sensitive filter aids and premium quality functional fillers. Notwithstanding both the economic attractiveness of the specialty markets and the commercial versatility of the high purity deposits, deposits of lesser purity are mined in nearly all parts of the world for less demanding uses. Mining costs are minimized through open pit quarrying, but in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America underground mining methods are also employed. Blasting is not required because diatomite is soft and easily broken loose with mechanized equipment. Following gentle crushing, the ore is dried, milled, and processed into one of three broad categories of products: naturally milled, straight calcined, and flux calcined grades. Each of these principal categories is further subdivided into additional grades through particle size adjustment of the powders. Agglomeration of particles, alteration of fine structure, and color change are achieved through calcination. Flux calcination further accentuates these changes. Production throughout the world is dominated by the United States, followed by Romania, the former Soviet republics, and France. Other major producers include Spain, Mexico, Iceland, Korea, Japan, and Germany. Denmark is a major producer of Moler earth products, which consist of a diatomite-clay mixture. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The first industrial use of diatomite can be traced back some 2000 years to the Greeks and to the use of diatomaceous earth as a component in lightweight building brick and in ceramic pottery. It was not until the mid-1800s, however, that the unique properties of diatomite were first recognized and the market end-uses explored and developed. One of the most important of the early uses followed the development of dynamite by Alfred Nobel in the mid-1860s, whereupon diatomite was used as a component of the explosive to improve stability and safety. Other early uses included low temperature insulating and refractory bricks and as a component in insulating and fireproofing construction panels. During the 1920s, processing technology underwent a very rapid evolution with the development of calcination, flux calcination, and air classification technologies. Through these technologies, innumerable different size and grade classifications could be made for market applications and for rapidly diversified end- uses. Today, the application of processed diatomite for filter aid is the largest of the quality sensitive end-uses. Specific filtration uses include the clarification of beer, wine and liquor, vegetable oil, syrup and sugar, pharmaceuticals, and swimming pool water, to name a few. As a functional filler and extender, processed diatomite is ideally suited for application in paint, rubber, and plastic formulations. Other filler applications include use as an anti-blocking agent in plastic film, anti-caking agent for fertilizer, thermal insulating material, catalyst carrier, polish, abrasive, pesticide and fertilizer carrier, and chromatographic supports.
