Development of electrical power in coal mining has been an outstanding example of adaptability. It has accommodated itself to new inventions, changing mining methods, increasing demands, increasing safety requirements and many other new conditions. With the appearance of the continuous miner in the mining machinery picture, those engineers interested in the application of electricity to mining have been thinking about what new combination of electrical apparatus will best suit this newcomer. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the relative costs of supplying d-c versus a-c power to mining equipment with particular reference to continuous miner setups. Assume that a-c power will be delivered to the mine at some high voltage suitable for transmission to the various substation locations. Typical voltage for this purpose is 4000 volts. The problem then is to change the power to some kind of power suitable for driving the motors of mining equipment. For safety and other reasons the voltage to be delivered to the motor terminals must be under 600 volts.

Bayan Obo ore contains mainly bastnaesite, monazite and associated iron, fluorite, calcite, dolomite, barite, and trace amount of columbite. Due to its complex mineral compositions and similar mineral properties, it is difficult to separate and obtain rare earth and fluorite concentrates with high purity by conventional magnetic separation and flotation. In this paper, a stepwise magnetic separation process comprised of wet permanent magnetic separation (PMS), wet electromagnetic separation (EMS), and superconducting magnetic separation (SCMS) was proposed to pre-concentrate iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals from Bayan Obo ore. The results showed that iron, rare earth, and fluorite preconcentrates with high purity and low impurity content could be achieved, which might be helpful to shorten the technological process and improve the separation efficiency for the subsequent flotation of iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals.

Much attention and publicity has been given, during recent years, to grinding, classification, flotation, and thickening. The various technical papers, and symposiums held to discuss these important phases of milling, have contributed to a better under- standing of the fundamental principles and operating variables involved. Another important part of milling- to the flotation operator-is a treatment step to which frequently too little attention is given-" conditioning," or the treatment the ground mineral pulp receives before it enters the flotation machines. Conditioning" is a hackneyed and frequently misused term, commonly employed to describe the pretreatment of surfaces of minerals in ore pulps or mill pr6ducts prior to froth flotation. In general, such pretreatment is for the purpose of changing the flotation characteristics of these mineral surfaces to enable them to respond in some desired predetermined manner when subjected to flotation. Taggartl states that the function of conditioning is "either to insure selective collector coating of one mineral species while another species is not; or to take such steps as will compensate for departure there from."

Manganese alloys are important raw materials for steelmaking. However, selective mining of high-grade manganese ore resources has resulted in a scarcity of these high-grade Mn ores (Mn: >42; Mn/Fe: >5). The present research work is carried out to explore a new smelting reduction process to produce high-Mn/Fe syntheticMn ore from low-grade ferruginous manganese ores. Representative samples of low-grade ores (Mn: 25–30%; Mn/Fe: ~1) were collected and smelting reduction studies were carried out using variable smelting power (20–30 kWh), carbon rate (10–20% of ore) and slag basicity (0.1–0.3) to produce high-MnO slag and manganese pig iron. Studies have shown that different-grade high-MnO slags (MnO: 38.57–58.24%; Mn/Fe: >15) and manganese pigs (Mn: 5.16–24%) can be produced at optimum process conditions. The high-MnO slag can be used as synthetic ore for the ferroalloy production process. The developed process is capable to effectively segregate the iron and manganese in the metal and slag, respectively. The optimum Mn and Fe separation (>95%) was achieved by smelting of 10 kg Mn ore batch in a 50-kVA electric arc furnace using 30 kWh smelting power and 0.16 kg of coke. The slag basicity was maintained at 0.3 and the optimum slag SiO2 was ~30%. The studies indicated that the upgrading of low-grade ferruginous manganese ores is a promising solution for achieving high-Mn/Fe-ratio synthetic ores for ferroalloy production. It can help the manganese alloy industry to overcome challenges associated with the scarcity of high-Mn/Fe-ratio Mn ores and efficient utilization of low-grade resources.

LOOKING back over the industrial and commercial progress of the United States during the last half century the outstanding influence has been the growth of the use of the fluid fuels, petroleum and natural gas. At the turn of the century these fuels supplied only 8 per cent of the energy requirements of the nation. Last year nearly 45 per cent of our heat and power supply were derived from these fuels. These figures are merely statistical reflections of the fundamental change in our national economy which has affected, in so many amazing ways, the life of this generation. The factors which have caused this change are still operative. The trend which has thus been established still continues and growth in the use of these fuels is, in all probability, still well below the peak, both for this country and for other parts of the world. Two great wars have not essentially changed this basic trend; if anything they have served to accelerate it. World War II did not alone increase our requirements for liquid fuels; it demonstrated the absolute essentially of petroleum resources to our national security. MINE surveying and engineering at the various properties of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has developed and increased in importance steadily as mining methods have changed and expanded, both in the development of ore bodies and in the methods and styles of stoping. Most important to satisfactory engineering practice, and secondary -only to accuracy and precision, is the preservation of all data relative to surveys and calculations so that it is readily available for use at all times and in -such form that it is permanent, easily found, and usable. The first consideration for a proper, accurate, and practical start for surveys and efficient engineering at any property is an accurate triangulation net and system of co-ordinates. This has been our practice and the first step seas to select a base line, readily accessible and easily measured, situated preferably on an even grade where the difference of elevation between the two -end monuments was not too great and -the distance was long enough for practical use. Permanent concrete monuments were built for these base-line points so constructed that they could be easily recognized and were visible. Precise levels were run on this base 'line and the elevation (sea level datum) if possible was established at each end monument. The distance was carefully measured many times, back and forward, by using a tape that had been standardized by the National Bureau of Standards. Opencast mining method is one of the most productive mining methods available at present, which is generally associated with the removal and handling of a huge amount of overburden material. Hence it imposes a serious challenge of dump slope stability and that too, mainly in the case of internal dumps. The study is primarily focused on the stability of dragline dumps and the subsequent development of a rating system to classify the stability of dragline dump profiles. Initially, numerical simulation is executed through RS2 (Version 9.0) software, which is based on the finite element method. Thereafter, simulation results are used to perform the sensitivity analysis of various geometrical and strength parameters of the dump slope, and the two-factor interaction method is also incorporated into the analysis, this method included the dependency of closest parameters while calculating the sensitivity index, and thereafter, it is converted into the rating of each parameter. The strength parameter like the angle of friction and the geometrical parameter like slope angle of the bench between the coal-rib roof and dragline sitting level are assigned the highest rating value. Based on the overall rating of the dragline dump, the dump slopes are classified into various classes, viz., very safe, safe, vulnerable, unstable, and highly unstable. This classification proved to be handy in the quick estimation of the stability of the dragline dump and also gives an idea of designing optimum and safe dragline dump profiles. The developed classification chart has been validated by the previous research works and has found similar results.

VERSATILITY is perhaps the outstanding characteristic of the subject of this sketch. He is author, golf-player, musician, public speaker, philatelist, German scholar, and has been a school teacher; but these are incidental. Oliver Ralston's professional forte might be described as beneficiating solid minerals and he has dealt in an important way with practically all of them. To this work he has brought a fertile mind stimulated by keen imagination but kept on the track by a sense of economic balance. An indication of his versatility is evidenced by his career with the Bureau of Mines, which he first joined in 1912, when the Bureau was just one year old. Except for two excursions into industry-Hooker Electro Chemical Co. (1917-20) and United Verde Copper Co. (1928 to 1935)-his entire professional career has been with the Bureau.

CREATION of atomic energy, aside from its influence on war or peace, has posed these basic questions for the world: How soon can energy from atoms be harnessed to do man's daily work? How much of this power will there be, to what degree will it supplant present fuels, and what does it imply for the future of civilization? Answers to these questions may be found in part in analysis of just what atomic energy is and how far its development has come. The answers are encouraging. One of the first questions encountered in considering the application of atomic reactions is whether such reactions can be controlled. Fortunately, this has been adequately demonstrated by the operation of the Government plutonium plants at Hanford, Wash. Here nuclear reactions are carried out on a large scale involving liberation of about a billion B.t.u. per hour. This hourly heat liberation is equivalent to that obtained from about 7100 gallons of fuel oil. It has been possible to operate these plants day in and day out with the reaction controlled at the intensity desired. There should therefore be no question that, under proper conditions, reactions involving nuclear fission can be controlled.

Pressure oxidation is a hydrometallurgical oxidative pretreatment for refractory ores, such as sulfide ores. Here, simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments were carried out on a pyritic ore from the Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico. Mineral characterization, agitation leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic testing results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted at a temperature range of 40–80 °C, oxygen pressure of 87.5–200 psi, and cyanide concentration of 0.8–1.2 wt% in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. A dissolution rate of 81–86% was achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 wt% NaCN, for 1 h.

AN extensive study of German underground manufacturing experience is being undertaken by the Air Materiel Command. Headquarters officials consider completely underground facilities one of the most effective means of protecting aircraft production against air attacks of the strength and type employed in World War II. Advantages accruing to underground manufacturing installations other than protection are, perhaps, a smaller maintenance problem and the possibility of using gravity flow on some production lines. Offsetting these advantages are the high cost of construction, problems of ventilation, and poor acoustics. Excavation costs might well be less than the cost of enclosing the same area on the surface, as new and better methods of rock drilling and transportation are developed. Certainly the amount of building materials used would be far less than in constructing a surface plant of the same dimensions. A STURDY and consistent expansion of the metal industry occurred in 1947 exemplified by an increase of approximately 30 per cent in steel consumption over 1946. For this major reason, ferroalloy metals have seen their most useful and important peace-time year. The current domestic rate of consumption of high-grade ferroalloy ores, together with added consumption of new foreign producers as well as for eign nationals' restrictions on high-grade exports, makes very evident the increasing difficulties of obtaining sufficient high-grade ores. This accentuates the need for new and less expensive methods of production of ferro-alloy metals of higher purity from lower-grade domestic resources. As an important factor in preparedness, procurement of these high-grade, -critical ferroalloy minerals and metals for our nation's stock piles is a most important task. Also, this stock-piling can be the means of supplying incentive for the industrial development of the new metallurgical processes and plants necessary for the recovery of ferroalloy metals from our domestic low-grade deposits.

The application of gob-side entry retaining (GER) in steeply pitching seam longwall mining with a hard roof has always been a difficult problem. Based on the simplified roof beam mechanical model, the traditional gob-side entry retaining by packing (GERP) roof structure evolution process and its problems with use in steeply pitching seams are analyzed. Therefore, based on the unique characteristics of the gangue rolling and accumulating in the steeply pitching seam, this contribution proposes an innovative method of gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting (GERRC) in steeply pitching seam and details its technical process. The roof structures of the GERRC and the GERP are compared. Taking the Chang Gouyu Coal Mine as a case study, field experiments were carried out. This research finds that the GERRC can both overcome the impact of rolling gangue on roadside support and make the rolling and stacking gangue become a roadside support. The roof structure of the GERRC is in a one-time statically indeterminate state, which is conducive to the stability of the roadway. In the field test, the total displacement of the roadway roof and floor is 97 mm, the supporting pressure of the serried single props is less than 28 MPa, and the props have no obvious bending phenomenon.

J. B. Haffner, or "Barney" as he is known to his wide circle of friends, was born at Landskrona, Sweden, on Christmas Day, 1886. He attended grade and preparatory schools there and then went to the Royal Technical Institute at Stockholm from which he graduated as a mining engineer in 1910. During these school years he gained practical experience in his summer vacations by working in various mines in Sweden and other European countries. Upon graduation he set forth for the land of opportunity, the United States. Upon arrival in this country he found people everywhere talking about the fabulous gold fields in Alaska and thereupon set sail for Nome, to take part in placer gold mining operations. Returning to the States, Barney worked in Illinois coal mines for a time and then carried on some construction work in Oklahoma. One of the most urgent needs in the field of coal combustion is the ability to predict the performance of a coal from knowledge gained from small-scale tests. Numerous types of analyses and tests are conducted on coal, including the proximate and ultimate analyses, heating value, varieties of sulphur, ash analysis, ash fusion temperatures, free swelling index, petrographic analysis, and Gieseler plasticity. The Illinois Geological Survey has made an intensive study of the value of these tests for judging the performance characteristics of the coal as actually utilized. To date, three reports 1 2 3 have been is- sued, and another is being prepared. The present paper briefly summarizes some of the results found in the studies.

THE figures on enrollment in the engineering schools of the United States and Canada indicate that the total number of students in these schools for the current year, 1949-50, is about 10% less than it was a year ago. This year, 226 - 533 undergraduates and graduate students are studying engineering in the United States and Canada as compared with. 249,913 students last year. The Miami Copper Co., Arizona, is asking Congress to reimpose the import duty of two cents per pound on copper which, by law, has been suspended until June 30, 1950. C. Donald Dallas, chairman of Revere Copper and Brass, champion of a duty-free regime as regards the red metal, has been answering E. H. Westlake, Miami president, now that Mr. Westlake's statement to stock- holders has been salted away for posterity on wire recorders. Even prior to this action and at the instigation of two prominent consumers of pig lead, the House of Representatives has, in the confines of committee, not yet reported out, as of June 16, a bill to suspend the duty on lead for another year from expiration of the present law June 30, 1949. But apparently the bill was started too late. Thus the tariff issue becomes a Rip Van Winkle again after having slept for several years in the mountains of metals scarcity. During the wartime scarcity and the boom days that followed, most metal producers welcomed a considerable influx of foreign metal since it gave them a little surcease from constant teleibhone calls asking why that delivery of 300 tons of lead, 250 tons of zinc, and 1000 tons of copper had been delayed. These were the days when it was such an undisputed sellers' market that the sellers had even thrown away their certificates of ownership.
