The Tenth International Conference of Directors of Safety in Mines Research was held in the United States from September 28 through October 2, 1959, at Hotel Webster Hall, Pittsburgh, Pa. The Conference was organized by the Federal Bureau of Mines. In accord with the program outlined at the Ninth Conference (1956, Heerlen, Holland), the papers submitted dealt with the following three subjects: 1. Safety of coal mine explosives 2. Explosion hazards in mines 3. Ignition and fires in mines Seventy papers were presented. There were eight technical sessions followed by an extended tour of the Bruceton facility of the Bureau of Mines on October 2. Simultaneous translation was provided in the three official languages of the Conference--English, French, and German.

This investigation was conducted to identify the principle causes of spoil instability problems in the Eastern Coal Province. The study was also conducted to develop a matrix to predict the strength and groundwater parameters necessary to conduct stability analyses on a proposed reclamation scheme. Suggestive methods to reduce spoil instability potential are also included. Numerous physical property, strength, compressibility, chemical and mineralogical tests were conducted on mine spoil samples obtained from 11 different surface mine sites. Site characteristics that influence the position of the post reclamation groundwater table were identified. Distinct regions within the Eastern Coal Province with high incidences of surface mine slides or high landslide susceptibility were identified. The application of the predictive matrices developed in this study is for surface mine sites mined and reclaimed in general accordance with the Surface Mine Reclamation Control Act of 1977. A review of current mining practices and the relative effect on spoil stability is included.

The belt conveyor is one of the major pieces of equipment for transferring bulk material in mining operations. However, considerable amount of respirable dust may be generated whenever the bulk material is loaded, dumped, or transferred. This report identifies and evaluates various dust control technolgies applicable to belt conveyors, and describes how an integrated systems approach can reduce dust emissions at a transfer point. Phase I of the program consisted of literature search and a critical evaluation of various dust control technologies. The work established that a comprehensive approach to calculating exhaust volumes for dust collection system does not exist. The parameters that affect the wet dust suppression efficiency were also reviewed. Based on the Phase I work, bulk material handling system and dry dust collection or wet dust suppression systems were designed and installed at a number of transfer points in a limestone processing facility, a surface mine selected as a field test site. Field test data were used to determine the validity of various exhaust volume calculations at the different transfer points. The field test data also formed the basis for the evaluations of the relative effectiveness of commercially available and wet dust suppression systems in controlling respirable dust emissions.

This research program was a theoretical and experimental study to improve understanding of the mechanisms of flame extinguishment in methane-coal dust-air-suppressant mixtures. This final report is a summary of work conducted during this grant, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. Work under this new grant closely followed a recently completed contract for the Bureau of Mines that was conducted at this laboratory, and results of the earlier contract are also summarized in this report, as required in the grant work statement. The experimental effort was concentrated on supplementing the limited data available to describe laminar flames in methane-coal-air-suppressant mixtures. The theoretical effort was devoted to developing a comprehensive model that could be used to explain and extrapolate the experimental data. Selected for study were the following flames: Methane-air; methane-air plus KHCO , KNO3, K C204, KBr, Al203 or Monnex; methane-coal dust-air; coal dust-air with size, volatiles content, and concentration as variables, and coal dust-air plus KHCO3, KN03, KBr, NaCl or CaC03.

Because the activity coefficient of silicon dissolved in iron is influenced by the concentration of silicon as well as that of oxygen, the equilibrium constant K2 of reaction 2 becomes a function of metal composition, and, as shown in Fig. 1, a plot of log KP1 at 1600°C against the weight percent of silicon gives a smooth curve. "Froth flotation has a long history of success for the recovery and concentration of a wide variety of minerals of commercial interest. Both the art and science of flotation have progressed greatly, and as our knowledge has increased so has our ability to improve mineral separations and recoveries.One area of interest in recent years has been the flotation of refractory gold ores to recover the goldbearing sulfides. In many instances, the use of conventional air flotation to concentrate these values has achieved only limited success. However, as a result of intensive research, Newmont Mining has expanded the boundaries of flotation, and it can now be used to successfully treat many gold-bearing sulfide ores as well as platinum and palladium ores. This has been achieved through the use of the patented N2TEC technology, which utilizes nitrogen as an inert gas in the flotation process."

An economic analysis for evaluating coal preparation in Appalachian Region is presented. A complete coal preparation plant is used to deter- mine the capital and operating costs. Using profit maximization as a decision criterion, an optimal process flowsheet for given coal characteristics can be selected among the process alternatives by a process-economic model. A deterministic analysis is used to calculate the discounted cash flow interest rate of return and project the selling prices of clean coal products. A probabilistic evaluation is further made to quantify the risk involved in obtaining the desired profit levels.

The status of utilization of copper ore resources, and the application and development of biohydrometallury technology in the world is reviewed. Based on the characterization of Zambia?s copper resources, biohydrometallurgy technology is shown to be a practical approach to extract and utilize the enormous low grade copper resource, such as ore tailings and low grade copper ore in this country. Through the cooperation of CSU, China and MMMD, Zambia, ?CNMC-CSU Demonstration Base of Biohydrometallurgy Technology in Zambia? was launched and several biohydrometallurgy plants are being constructed. This indicates that the biohdyrometallurgy technology would be applied soon in Zambia and in the whole Africa. Biohydrometallurgy technology stands as an efficient alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy process and it can be the key to unlock mineral resources value. "Long before a modern mine commences operations it has already become a wealth of information. After start up, it can generate enormous quantities of data - especially with semi-automated data acquisition by instrumented mine equipment.However, much of this data is of limited use for evaluation of (potential) performance unless it links in some way to the site business model.An underlying reason for this waste of data is that the different cultures, financial, technical, community, environmental, etc, not only have many areas of interest but also have very different conceptual models by which they evaluate performance.It is too ambitious to attempt to bring all of these cultures together - in a single step.However, the success of the Mine to Mill - project has demonstrated that substantial operational value can be added by using a more integrated approach to comminution. The next logical step is to integrate measurement and then to track performance from ore body model to saleable product and waste disposal. From resource to product also represents a path from very sparse, highly variable data to much more detailed measurement and more representative sampling.However, in both cases the data collected is strongly focused on the technical requirements - not on the business model.This paper considers how to define at least some of the key decision points in terms of some case studies.Performance data from many areas might be used to derive simple models which can then be used for forecasting and optimisation of planning."

"The solubility of wollastonite and its Hallimond flotation behavior as a function of dodecylamine concentration and pH are examined. The flotation response is characterized by adsorption and surface energy in the presence of amine. The methods of UV-Visible and FT-IR spectroscopy for adsorption and sessile-drop contact angle for surface energy estimation are employed.The results of wollastonite dissolution clearly showed its non uniform dissolution. The surfaces are depleted with calcium ions and became rich in silicon within 10 min of flotation time. Maximum flotation of wollastonite corresponds to a half monolayer coverage of amine, which is substantiated by the surface energy parameters as shown in figure 1."

A comprehensive approach to the development and organization of an expert system that is designed to assist electricians in diagnosing electrical faults m mining machinery is discussed. The system includes diagnostic, reference, and tutorial programs. The diagnostic portion of the system is based on a causal-reasoning approach which is used to establish a hierarchy of symptoms and the subsequent production rules for identifying component-level failures m the motor-control circuit of a shuttle car. With this approach, conclusions are developed directly from knowledge of the circuit and its behavior (in both working and failure modes) based on first principles, rather than the heuristics of a domain expert. The symptoms and their hierarchical structure an: formulated by creating "what-if" scenarios and performing a qualitative circuit analysis for each fault Techniques for incorporating interactive graphical displays of the circuit schematic into the diagnostic portion of the system are also presented. Supportive computer programs that provide' reference material and tutorials on the circuit are also described.

When it comes to sampling theory, a bad sampler is a bad sampler, no matter what, and a sampler is either bad or good. It also is of critical economic importance to tell and understand the difference, especially in a metallurgical plant. In this paper, the grand principles of Sampling Theory are first recalled, then the most popular types of sample cutters for plants are critically reviewed. It is concluded that the industry has a lot of progresses to make in that direction, although improvements usually pay for themselves very quickly.

Due to continuously growing resource demands and increasing requirements for sustainability, safety and environmental protection on the other hand, the mining industry is being subjected to these additional requirements. Over the past few decades progress has been made in all topics. In 1987, the United Nations published the following in the Brundtland Report: ?development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.?[5] The term ?Blue Mining? means to work sustainably, economically, ecologically, and efficiently while also improving ergonomics, for example by increasing automation. An example of how mining can actively be involved in energy management will be shown. Initial evaluations of underground cavitites were done for purpose of energy storage. The planning and construction of underground pump storage plants both in active and inactive mining operations was also investigated.

As part of a broad program to optimise the performance of their grinding circuit, BHP Billiton Cannington have installed an OCS© Expert system together with three VisioRockTM online particle size analysis cameras. The main purpose of the system is to stabilise grind size and feed to the flotation circuit. This particular application of OCS© is the first installation to incorporate Metso Minerals Process Technology-Asia Pacific's (MMPT AP) Dynamic SAG/AG Mill Model, which is able to predict numerous mill parameters that were previously unable to be measured with the existing plant instrumentation. Integrated into the logic of the control algorithm are online vision based, particle size measurements of the AG mill feed and recycle crusher product. This paper will describe the history of the project from initiation to date, the model and OCS© logic configuration, and demonstrate the significant benefits realised at Cannington mine.

The strength of coal mass saturated with gas is an essential parameter in studying the mechanism of gas and coal outburst, and its prediction method. Up to now, there has not been a method for determining the strength of coal mass saturated with gas. This paper describes a new method whereby the strength of in-situ coal mass can be determined and stored continuously and automatically. The simulation results obtained in the laboratory indicate that the new method allows a fast, reliable, inexpensive and convenient determination of the strength of coal mass.
