With the advent of mechanical loading the need of definite information has become more apparent. The co-ordination of all the individual units of operation has become very necessary From these two essential features in running a mechanized coal mine has come the demand for the "time study." The time study is nothing more or less than the recording of each operation together with the time of clay or the total time expended during a period of work. Using the latter, it is impossible to have information showing just when each piece of work was clone and to what extent they overlap. The studies used here are of the former type, being based on the recording of the operation together with the time of day so that the details of performance of the machine or crew may be followed from starting to quitting time by' referring to the graph upon which the study is taken.

In the spring of 1935 the authors undertook to compare the geomagnetic and direct-current carth-resistivity methods of tracing a concealed dike along its strike. An area near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was selected, where a diabase dike was known. For rapid reconnaissance the magnetic method offers several advantages ovcr the electrical. The resistivity method is useful in determining the position of underground water, a factor of consideration in regions where mining is contemplated. All factors considered, the coincidence between the positions of the dike as determined by the two methods is striking.

"The Thompson Mill processes ores from the Thompson and Birchtree Mines. While the Thompson ore has very little magnesium containing gangue, the Birchtree orebody consists of veins of massive sulphide in a rock matrix that contains a high proportion of magnesium silicate minerals. A significant fraction of the magnesium is floatable, which lead to MgO levels varying from 3-11 wt% in the Birchtree concentrate. The magnesium in the concentrate causes a higher operating temperature in the smelter, reducing furnace life.Birchtree ore represented 20-30% of the mill ore receipts prior to October 2003. Since then the fraction of Birchtree ore has increased to 50%. A reduction of the MgO in concentrate to less than 3% in the total mill concentrate was required to allow safe and economic smelter operation.In October of 2002 a miniplant was set up to simulate the Birchtree plant circuit. Several flow sheet modifications were tested that led to a proposal for a circuit having increased cleaning capacity for the scavenger concentrate and a recleaner on this concentrate. Addition of CMC in rougher cleaner feed was also found to be required. The solution was confirmed through pilot plant testing in the mill in December of 2002. A full-scale installation was designed, engineered, and installed between February and September of 2003 with commissioning in September and October of 2003. Target metallurgy was achieved one week after start-up on slurry to coincide with the Birchtree Mine tonnage increase. This paper highlights the development, design and commissioning stages of the project.The new MgO rejection circuit has successfully allowed the processing of Birchtree ores producing concentrate consistently below 3% MgO. In addition, the new circuit increased overall nickel recovery in the mill.INTRODUCTIONThe Thompson Nickel Belt located approximately 700km north of Winnipeg was discovered in the early 1950’s. Inco first produced nickel from the area in 1960. Over the years the mill has processed several ores from different ore bodies in the area. Currently the Thompson Mill processes two significantly different ores from two mines, Thompson and Birchtree. The Thompson ore is a massive sulphide orebody hosted in schist, containing feldspars, quartz and biotite. Thompson Ore is characterized by high nickel recoveries and clean, low MgO containing concentrates (<2.5% MgO). The Birchtree ore is ultramafic and contains a high percentage of Mg-silicates such as serpentine, chlorite, biotite, amphiboles and talc. Some of these Mg-silicates report to the nickel concentrate and prior to commissioning of the MgO rejection circuit the Birchtree nickel concentrate typically contained 5-8% MgO"

A new horizontal borehole packer for use in coal beds has been developed. This packer utilizes a principal of operation which has not previously been used. The resulting packer is less costly to purchase, can be easily repaired in the field with inexpensive expendable parts. This report describes the development and testing of the new packer and the evaluation of commercially available packers.

Barometric pressure and its variation in deep underground workings have a considerable effect on ventilation conditions. Pressure changes which create transient states of air flow and air parameters in workings are especially significant. Experiments have shown that pressure changes have a remarkable effect on air parameters at mine workings and hence, attempts to evaluate the scale of this phenomenon are of value. Continuous monitoring of the barometric pressure on the surface of mines allows for the detection of changes in pressure which undoubtedly influence alternations of pressure in the underground areas of mines. Very important factors are the internal disturbances of pressure within a mine ventilation system due to variable conditions of fan operation and the operation of a winding machine where a mine cage moving in a shaft causes piston like disturbances. Local transient disturbances caused by temporary opening/closing of air stoppings due to personnel or underground transport traffic are of importance. The results of over two years of observations of barometric pressure and its influence on pressure variation in underground mine workings are presented in this paper. The observations were possible through the installation of pressure sensors at selected points of the downcast shaft in a mine. Of interest are the observations of the transient states of pressure and other air parameters caused by emergency fan stoppage, movement of a mine cage and changes due to the opening of air stoppings. Data acquired during experiments of opening and closing air stoppings were used for the validation of a flow model in a long working.

In this paper, the methods of bringing about this increase in productivity through the building of some twelve new collieries (producing some 15 million tons annually) and the modernization, reconstruction and extension of some thirty-six older collieries are discussed.

The Fourth International Symposium on Hydrometallurgy was organized to give those in the minerals processing field an opportunity to discuss current topics of interest in the broad field of hydrometallurgy. Held in Salt Lake City, UT Aug. 1-5, 1993, this fourth symposium also paid tribute to Milton E. Wadsworth for his many contributions in this area over the past 40 years. The science of hydrometallurgy has made great strides since the last symposium was held 10 years ago. The use of electrochemical principles and techniques has produced encouraging results. For example, the application of in situ electrode spectroscopy has helped to understand the mechanisms operating in hydrometallurgical processes. Sophisticated computer models have been developed to handle the thermodynamic properties of concentrated electrolytes. However, it is up to the hydrometallurgist to continuing working on bridging the gap between theory and practice. The successful application of solvent extraction-electrowinning (SXEW) is one illustration of the successful transfer of technology. Its widespread use in the United States during the 1980s played a significant role in the revival of the domestic copper industry. Currently, electrowon copper accounts for about 30% of total US production. Impressive developments in precious metals recovery have also occurred. Since the last symposium, carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and heap leaching have become widely used in gold recovery. And recovery of refractory precious metals ores and concentrates by pres¬sure oxidation and bio-oxidation have made significant advances. In all these examples, hydrometallurgy has played a significant role in the recovery of minerals and metals from primary sources. In addition, considerable attention has been focused on the treatment and recovery of values from secondary sources.

(written discussion ?).-There are few mine officials who will not say that there is, great need of vocational schools in mining communities, but the absence of success of so many of these ventures makes them wary about establishing such schools. They have neither the time nor the facilities to study the systems and to analyze the factors that have made certain schools a success and others a failure. In the first place, it is difficult to secure the proper instructors. Educators cannot make the appeal to the workmen, because of their lack of experience, and experienced men who are capable of the appeal are not usually educators, knowing nothing about the presentation of the subject. Then, too, there is ordinarily no objective in a mine school. The workman is not reached by a school that makes him merely a more valuable man to his employer, unless he can participate in the gain. An objective, as promotion or financial gain, would appeal to the man and would make for regular attendance. Usually vocational schools are run like all others-a number of subjects at a time, continued from one day to another. This is impractical for the workman, whose mind cannot work like the mind of a school boy. The school boy is spending most of his time in school work, while the man is doing it as a side issue, and he cannot be expected to pick up tonight&apos;s lesson where last night&apos;s left off. The workman is accustomed to the idea of completing a job and doing one thing at a time; his mind is trained that way, and for this reason a school that works on the principal that each lesson is a complete job, with no reference to the previous or following lesson, will go a long way toward removing one of the things that has caused many failures. The usual vocational schools .in mining communities are either very elementary, or are run by the engineering staff and, consequently, are too advanced. There is no plan between. It is believed that there is a possibility of a halfway type, but this is a subject that is large enough for a paper by itself and is entirely, too broad to be presented as a discussion.

"ABSTRACTThe application of failsafe techniques to ask the ""What if"" questions about any process has been well established in the chemical industry for many years. The unusual number of fatalities that occurred in Ontario during 1986-87, prompted Inco management to look at the Fail Safe techniques as a method of improving safety performance.INTRODUCTIONOne of the major areas at any time for potentially disastrous accidents is the shaft, where all men and materials must travel. In April 1987, Inco&apos;s Thompson Mine&apos;s first Fail Safe Team was established to look at its shaft operations. The initial group of eight people was made up of hourly equipment operators, mine foremen, engineering, maintenance and the superintendent. This group took the name of Shaft Risk Analysis Team or SRAT.The many tasks or jobs that are performed in a shaft prompted the team to divide the work under six major headings; slinging, moving men, skipping, dewatering, shaft inspections and moving materials. Each of these areas contained many different tasks which are interrelated. The only way to understand this interrelationship was to flow chart the steps that actually occur in getting any job done.The flow charting is done by the foreman and operators using existing standard manuals and their experience of what actually takes place. In many cases, it soon became apparent that they had been ""working around"" many problems created by their standards. Fine tuning of these flow charts takes place at the weekly meetings, where input from all involved leads to a better understanding of the actual job being analyzed and its potential hazards. Two major points need to be emphasized in getting good flow charting at a mine:I. It must never be blame oriented or you will never discover how the jobs are actually done and hence you won&apos;t know what to improve.2 . All team members must have equal voting rights in deciding how to put the charts together so that they have ownership of the finished product. It is far too easy to end up with amanagement view of the way it should be. Many different techniques or methods are being employed to improve the tasks and reduce the risks associated with any job once the basic flow chart is established. The ones found to be the most useful are highlighted."

RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AT ITS MEETING ON APRIL 17, 1936 Recognizing the fact that the problems of the committee named by the Board to prepare the " official ticket" for officers and Directors of the Institute are various and difficult; and desiring to assist this committee by setting forth some of the principles that should guide the committee and some of the qualifications that should be required of candidates, the following instructions are formulated and the Secretary is directed to publish them in MINING AND METALLURGY concurrently with the publication of the names of each newly appointed Nominating Committee and to send a copy to each member of the Committee. NOMINATIONS TO BE MADE Each year the Nominating Committee is to select "official" candidates for eight places, as follows: (1) President and Director (2) Vice-President and Director (3) Vice-President and Director (4) Director (5) Director (6) Director (7) Director (8) Director GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION The Bylaws provide that "the Nominating Committee shall, so far as practicable, distribute representation on the Board geographically." Pursuant to this provision, the United States, Canada and Mexico have been divided into fifteen districts, as shown on the official map.* Districts 1, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12,13,14, and 15 are assigned one Directorship each; District 2, three Directorships; District 3, eight Directorships; District 4, two Directorships; and Districts 7, 8, and 9, two Directorships between them. It will be the duty of the Nominating Committee to make selections that will give effect to this allocation of Directorships. There is nothing to prevent a Director being named to succeed himself. Attention is called to the: fact that many Institute members now resident in New York formerly lived in the West, South, or North and still have intimate business connections that compel them to visit various parts of the country periodically. Such men are particularly valuable as Directors and their nomination and election tends to minimize the objection that a large number of Directors reside in New York.

Competitive pressures involving product duality, uniformity and economics are increasing the interest in and accelerating&apos; the adoption of automation by the cement industry. The demands of this industry on instrumentation and control manufacturers for more effective and reliable control of process variables is also increasing. The trend to replacing small grinding mills with a fewer number of larger mills is lowering the investment requirement per unit of capacity both for the mills and for their automation. Cement process control systems of today are more sophisticated than the equipment installed two or three years ago, not because the process itself is more complex but because todays demands require a higher degree of control action and accuracy. Because of increasing labor costs, an important objective of an automation program is a reduction in the process labor content. This can be realized by allowing the operator free time for other duties, by increasing the number of grinding circuits one operator can supervise and by removing to. a large extent the need for the operator to make process&apos; adjustment decisions.

A solution has been obtained to the problem of calculating flow into a cased and perforated well. Equations describing the idealized system were solved by numerical analysis techniques on a high-speed digital computer. Computer experimentation indicated that the results are within 3 per cent of the exact solution. Computed results are presented as an apparent skin effect, on a series of dimensionless working curves. Productivity ratios can be rapidly calculated from these data for the wide range of wellbore and reservoir properties actually encountered in field practice. Any reasonable vertical unisotropy ratio can be included in the computation. Productivities can be calculated for wells perforated in a regular pattern, a single horizontal plane or a vertical line on one side of the casing. Solutions for asymmetrical perforation patterns can he easily obtained from the working curves. Solutions for flow into sells completed with a horizontal notch are also provided. Results show that productivity can be increased by extending perforation penetration. This is especially true for shallow penetrations. The highest productivity is obtained when perforations are arranged in horizontal planes, as opposed to a vertical line on one side of the casing. Four or five perforations in one plane will approach the maximum productivity. The effect of perforation hole diameter is small, and is rioticeable only in shallow penetrations. INTRODUCTION The perforating method of well completion has been successfully and widely used in most producing areas. In the past, the desired perforation results were achieved by simply shooting numerous large holes in the casing. A perforating scheme for an area, or particular well, was established by evaluating two types of experimental data: the well flow index and the productivity ratio.&apos; 3 The well flow index test is a means of determining the relative flow capacity of perforations in a linear system. This test also gives information on the perforation size, shape and hole damage which can be expected under well-bore conditions. However, relative flow data from this test cannot be accurately tarnsformed into the radial wellbore system. Thus, no true indication of the productive capacity of a perforated well can be obtained from the well flow index test. A well productivity ratio is derived from electrolytic models built to simulate perforated wells. Available productivity ratio data 2,3 are limited in that all important variables are not extensively evaluated. For example, data are limited to well radii of 3 and 6 in., and to maximum perforation penetration of 1 ft. Practically no information is available on the pattern of flow into a perforation. The effect of various perforation patterns on well productivity has not yet been determined and the effect of perforation diameter has not been thoroughly studied. Also, it will be shown that this type of electrolytic model data is probably in error by as much as 10 per cent or more. Modern completion techniques such as limited-entry perforating, single-plane fracturing, steam and hot air injection and chemical consolidation of incompetent formations all rely on injection and/or production from a limited type of completion. These completions may consist of several high-capacity perforations or a horizontal notch which is equivalent to an infinite number of perforations in one plane. Proper design of these new completion techniques requires, in part, accurate estimates of a well&apos;s productive capacity. Data on perforated and notched well productivity have been determined in this investigation. Results are presented as a function of the pertinent variables. Equations describing the idealized system were solved by numerical analysis techniques on a high-speed digital computer. DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM PRACTICAL APPLICATION The computed results can be applied to wells which meet several general specifications. An external drainage radius of the well must be known or assumed, but the well need not be drilled on a regular pattern. The well must be cased and cemented through the entire producing interval. And, the casing must be perforated with one or more horizontal planes of perforations. The perforation pattern itself must conform to three geometrical requirements. 1. The perforations in a plane must divide the plane into equal angular segments (Fig. 1). Four perforations per plane would be 90" apart. 2. Perforations in a plane must be directly above or beneath perforations in adjacent planes. For two shots per plane, perforations would lie in the BB&apos; plane (Fig. 1). 3. Horizontal planes must have equal vertical spacing and be separated from the top and bottom of the formation by one half the spacing interval. Single planes of perforations should be in the middle of the formation. This is shown in Fig. 2 where h is the formation thickness in a single plane conlpletion or the spacnig interval in a multiple plane completion. The spacing interval at the top and bottom of the formation may vary somewhat without causing an appreciable error in the productivity calculation if the formation is reasonably thick and there are many horizontal planes of perforations. Miners have long known that rock noise, or the popping and cracking of the rock commonly heard during mining, can indicate instability of the mine structure. For many years, miners have "listened" to the rock talk and many times have interpreted changes in rock noise activity to be a warning of failure and have retreated from the potential failure area. Microseismics, or the study of rock noises, was begun in the early 1940s partly because of this historical fact. Microseismics is based on using geophysical equipment to detect and analyze rock noises on audible and subaudible levels. Thus, these systems are much more sensitive than the human ear and "hear" even more of the rock "talk" than do miners. Research has shown that micro-seismics can be used to precisely locate portions of a working area that are generating rock noise, and that rock noise release rate information from each area can be used to analyze its stability. On the basis of research results, microseismic systems are now commercially available and have been purchased and installed in many mines around the world. Introduction When a rock mass is subjected to changing stress conditions, such as those caused by mining, small-scale adjustments occur within the rock that release seismic energy. When this energy is in the audible range it is called rock noise. Those areas where stress changes occur are also the areas of the structure most likely to fail. Individual rock noises can be detected and analyzed to determine their precise location relative to the mine structure. Over a period of time plots of this data provide a pictorial representation of where stress changes are occurring. This is because rock noise activity tends to concentrate in those structure areas most actively adjusting to the changing stresses. Since these areas are the most likely to fail, they can be pinpointed and mapped relative to the structure. Rock noise rates, or the number of rock noises occurring per unit of time, also tend to vary dramatically before failure. Thus, the ability to locate the source of individual rock noises provides a means of determining where failure may occur, and rate counting within each area offers a means of assessing when failure may occur. This information, properly treated, can be used to avoid, control, or warn of impending failure. Successful applications of this technique have provided recent impetus to the effort of developing microseismics into a practical, reliable, and economically feasible tool. The phenomenon of naturally occurring rock noise was discovered in 1938 by Obert and Duvall (1939) who were measuring seismic velocities in mine pillars. Seismic energy other than what they were generating continually registered on their recording equipment. Further study by these researchers showed that the extraneous seismic energy being recorded was from rock noises that were being generated within the rock in highly stressed areas. Pursuing this interesting phenomena both in the laboratory and in the field, Obert and Duvall documented the dramatic change in rock noise rate before failure (Obert, 1941). They also established the fact that, in many instances, rock burst failures could be predicted by monitoring and listening to the rock noise activity in rock-burst-prone areas (Obert and Duvall, 1945). These early efforts clearly showed that microseismics had great potential as a tool for measuring or estimating mine structure stability. Extended testing, however, showed that sometimes rock bursts occurred with no apparent microseismic warning, and that at other times sharp increases in microseismic data were not accompanied by failure. Also, because precise location of individual rock noises was not possible at that time, one never knew where the failure was going to occur, only that failure near the observation point was likely. Thus, while the technique clearly offered promise, it was not considered practical then. In the mid-1960s, the Bureau of Mines undertook a new research effort to improve the microseismic technique. Major improvements were judged possible mainly because new and vastly improved electronic and system components had become available as an offshoot of space program instrument development. Thus, in 1967, development of a multichannel, broad band, microseismic system began (Blake and Leighton, 1970). Application of this system in rock-burst-prone mines showed it worked well and provided the incentive to develop methods whereby the source location of individual rock noises could be easily and directly calculated (Leighton and Blake, 1970; Leighton and Duvall, 1972; Redfern and Munson, 1982). INTRODUCTION The conventional way to program reservoir problems* for solution on the electric analyzer1 is one which concentrates the block units towards the inner radius of the prototype system being represented by the analog model. This is achieved by the device of considering block units of equal value radial resistance, leading to the consequences: (1) the ratio of the external to the internal radius of each block unit is a constant (i.e. r1/ri-l = constant a); (2) the external radius of the nth block unit is equal to the innermost radius of the system times the constant a raised to the nth power: (3) the capacitance of the block units increase by a factor of a2 going out radially from the innermost to the outermost boundaries of the system; (4) given n block units in the radial direction, the capacitance ratio of the outermost to the innermost block unit is a (2n-2); and (5) the vertical resistance of the block units decrease by a factor of a going out radially from the innermost to the outermost boundaries of the system, such that the ratio of the maximum to minimum vertical resistance is also given by the factor a(2n-2) PRESENT PROGRAMMING METHOD While this conventional way of programming problems is quite adequate for routine uses of the electric analyzer, it leads to difficulties in those cases where the inner radius of the prototype system (e.g., the well-bore) is small compared to the external radius (e.g.. the external reservoir boundary). To handle such a case by the conventional method would require either that a large value be selected for the constant a or that a large number n, of radial block units be chosen. In consequence, the capacitance and vertical resistance ratios become impossibly large, as will be evident from the relations given above. In any event, the size of the smallest and largest capacitors will always be limited by the size of commercially available components, and the analyzer itself will determine how many mesh points are available for radial block units. For example, it can be shown that if the maximum capacitance ratio which can be electrically handled is a factor of l04, the maximum external radius of the system which can be considered (assuming an internal wellbore radius of 0.25 ft is: It is thus seen that in direct consequence of having the inner wellbore radius small compared to the external radius, models extending beyond 30 to 40 ft are not possible when the capacitance ratio is limited to l04. (NB. A value of 10-9 farads can perhaps be taken as the minimum electrical capacitance possible if corrections for the capacitance of the lead wires are to be avoided. Values greater than 10-5 farads would require the use of unstable and inaccurate electrolytic capacitors). On the other hand, models extending out to 500 to 5,000 ft may be desired in single-well problems, and hence the need for a revised method of problem programming. * REVISED PROGRAMMING METHOD The revised method of programming is one which attempts to retain the desirable features of the conventional method (viz. concentration of block units towards the inner boundary, simplicity in computation, etc.) without having as a consequence that impossible capacitance and vertical resistance ratios will be required. The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently expanding capacity by extending their Metro system from South of the city to the North East end of the island. The scope of Contract 704 involved excavating a long reach of tunnel which had a complex rock/soil interface comprised of fresh granite overlaid by clayey sand. Two 6.5 m diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM’s were used to bore the tunnels. These machines were designed so that both hard and soft rock could be excavated. The cutter head was equipped with a combination of both rippers and disk cutters. Soil conditioning was achieved by delivering foam through a multiple port injection system. This very irregular profile of the interfaces posed many challenges to the equipment and the people.

lined-cavity shaped charge is an explosive mass with a cavity at one end and the detonator at the opposite end. The cavity is lined with a dense material, such as metal, glass, or a ceramic. Such an explosive device can be a useful drilling tool. Lined-cavity shaped charges are constructed to do just one thing — create a high-velocity jet of liner particles that can bore a hole in a target. The liner must be smooth and symmetrical, and high-velocity, high-brisance explosive must be used rather than ordinary commercial dynamites. Since the depth of target penetration is related to jet length, a standoff distance should be provided to hold the charge a short distance from the target. This allows the jet to lengthen prior to target impact. The best results are obtained when the jet is perpendicular to the target surface. Charges can be positioned for firing by taping them to a stake or simply laying them on a flat surface at the proper distance and angle with respect to the target. EFFECTS ON THE TARGET When a jet strikes a rock target, the jet and target particles at the jet-target interface move outward radially with respect to the jet axis to create a tremendous compressive load on the target material immediately below the target surface. The result is a shallow crater formed by spalling at the point of target entry. After cratering ceases, the steadily deepening hole continues to form as a result of the jet&apos;s imparting radial motion to the target particles at the jet-target interface. These radially moving particles collide with one another and with the hole walls, the net motion of the spent jet particles and target particles being back out of the hole in an axial direction (the backblast). The backblast keeps the penetration free of debris during penetration, al- though loose surface rock often falls into the hole after penetration ceases. The sudden stress relief after penetration ceases sometimes results in minor hole-wall rebound, which can partially fill the hole. The hole bottom will taper as the jet velocity decreases, until the jet velocity is too low to maintain the backblast. At this point the remaining jet and the following slug material are simply packed into the hole bottom. Antoine M. Gaudin was a vigorously creative man and throughout his career an internationally respected leader of his chosen profession of mineral engineering. To his professional colleagues and clients and to his former students he was both "Professor Gaudin," their wise, inspiring, and enthusiastic teacher, and "Tony," their, warm and beloved personal friend. Thus, his teachings and his unique inquisitive-creative approach to problems live on and grow in the accomplishments of his students. Antoine Gaudin was born at the turn of the century in Smyrna, Turkey, where his father was general manager of a French-owned railroad. It was there that he spent his earliest years, literally in the shadow of classic marbles from diggings at the site of Aphrodesias, which his father had rediscovered. From this, Tony developed an appreciation of the arts. He eventually surrounded himself with art treasures; he reveled in the beauties of nature, and he cherished his choice collection of rhododendron and azaleas. His artistic traits led him to take up painting when his daughter, Elinor, sought his help in blending her tints for a water color. In typical fashion he was not satisfied until he had become adept with pastels in capturing the muted tones of distant landscapes and the technical properties of light and color. Unfortunately not many paintings were produced. His paternal grandfather was Marc-Antoine Gaudin, for many years secretary of the Academie des Sciences in Paris, and a well known chemist and mineralogist whose primary interests included the synthesis of precious stones. In an autobiographical sketch written in 1939, Dr. Gaudin recalled: "As a child I saw many of the original synthetic sapphires and rubies which my father had inherited. This, coupled with my father&apos;s avocation of mining ventures and archaeology, early decided that I would become connected with the mineral industry." One can speculate that the archeological activities of his father, the mineral systhesis experiments of his grandfather, and his own early studies of mineralogy and geology formed a base from which his special talents as an experimentalist were to develop. Laboratory research under Professor Gaudin&apos;s personal guidance was often an intensive, fast-moving, and exciting experience--especially to a new graduate student.
