Mill length was the primary variable investigated in an autogenous pilot mill circuit. The 5-1/2' diameter mill had both pebble ports and 1/2" wide slotted grates. The plus 1/2" mill product was crushed in a cone crusher and returned to the mill feed along with the minus 1/2" plus 4 or 6 mesh fraction. Tests were run with a short mill, inside length of 26-3/8", or diameter-to-length ratio of 2.50 to 1. The same mill was then lengthened to 48-3/8", diameter-to-length ratio of 1.36 to 1. The effect of mill length on circuit product characteristics was studied. Results show that (1) circuit throughput or grinding rate is lower per foot of mill length in the longer mill, (2) the long mill product is finer than the short mill product, and (3) KWH per ton of circuit product is slightly higher with the longer mill; however, KWH per ton of minus 200 mesh material (finer fraction) produced is essentially the same in the long mill as the short mill, It is not known whether the relationships found for the pilot mill are valid for commercial size mills.

The Eagle Silver mine is in the Rush Valley mining district, Tooele County, Utah, and is now operated by the Hampton Mining Co. The property, originally referred to as the Argent, is reported to have been one of the first discoveries in the district. The early operators mined ore to a depth of 850 feet, at which point the property was abandoned because of excessive water. During 1905 the Honerine tunnel was driven into the area approximately 1,800 feet below the collar of the Argent shaft. This tunnel served to drain the levels above and operations were resumed. Ore deposits in the Eagle Silver mine occur in the Galena King lime-stone, a 20-to 60-foot member of interbedded quartzite and limestone in the Oquirrh formation of Pennsylvanian age. This member has been faulted along the bedding, forming the Galena King gouge. Mineralization commonly occurs in or near this gouge area in a brecciated, highly altered, pipelike zone. The known ore shoots occur in association with the breccia pipe, commonly adjacent to cross faulting and porphyry intrusions. In general, two ore shoots have been mined on the upper levels of the mine, one lying to the east and the other to the west of the breccia zone. The Bureau of Mines diamond-drilling program was begun during the latter part of 1948 and completed early in 1949. Nine holes were drilled, aggregating 852.8 feet. Sludge and core samples from mineralized sections were analyzed in the Salt Lake City laboratories. A total of 87 sludge, 71 core, and 11 chip samples was submitted for analysis.

(written discussion*).-In connection with Mr. Waring's quotation of Urbain's work, attention may be drawn to a remark found in the report of the session of the Société de Chimie Physique,1 held in December, 1909, that, while all blendes contain gallium in larger or smaller quantities, those blendes carrying indium are generally free from germanium, and vice versa. Urbain, furthermore, . expresses his conviction that this behavior, being related to the condi-tions of deposition of the ore, should be an important factor in determining the origin and mode of formation of zinc blende deposits., In. searching the literature for the naturally expected sequel to these remarks, there is found a report on the extraction of germanium from blende, after many months' work, on a commercial scale;2 then a paper3 on some Spanish blendes, all containing cadmium, examined by Urbain's 'method (this paper contains, also, very important work on the com-position and color of blendes, as well as on the occurrence of organic .matter and of inclusions in such blendes), and a second paper on Spanish blendes in general, in which this original point of Urbain's concerning the relative quantities of the three rare elements is taken up.4 Angel del Campo finds that of 68 specimens examined, four only were entirely free of germanium, gallium, and indium;. 38 had small proportions, while 19 were notably, and seven relatively rich in the three rare metals. He found the relative frequency to be: gallium in 60, germanium in, 50, and indium in 38; all three occurred in 29 cases; germanium and gallium together in 18; gallium and indium together in four; germanium and indium together without gallium, in none; four had gallium only, three had germanium only, and one had indium only; in 23 it appeared feasible to extract these elements. IN reviewing the design of the ore haulage system for the Morenci project, the reader should bear in mind that the railroad and its equpiment cannot be considered as an independent railroad provided only for the purpose of transporting ore from one point to another, but as an integral part of the operation which begins at the electric shovels loading ore at the mine, and ends where the ore, after having been crushed in the primary crushing plant, is deposited in the bins at the secondary crushing plant. Obviously then, the problem consisted of designing a system that would function to the best possible advantage in complete co-ordination with the other units.

"The mechanical properties of RSR anode alloys (lead-calcium-tin, 009+ and lead-strontium-tin) were investigated as a function of time with an objective of developing lead anodes for use in high temperature electrolytic processes such as in copper liberator cells and in cobalt and nickel electrowinning. At a temperature of 70 oC, the mechanical properties of rolled RSR lead-calcium-tin (PbCaSn) alloy currently used in copper electrowinning decreased gradually while the mechanical properties of rolled RSR lead-strontium-tin (PbSrSn) decreased relatively quickly and stabilized at low strength levels. Cast PbSrSn started off as the weakest alloy but its properties remained stable with time. Rolled RSR 009+ anode alloy showed improvement in ageing properties over the other alloys tested. However, its mechanical properties did not stabilize in the study timeframe of 284 days. Further investigations are planned to study the effect of alloying elements on mechanical properties of RSR 009+ anode alloy over several years as a function of time at 70 oC. The mechanical properties will be evaluated to determine the time at which they stabilize. Comparative plant trials with rolled RSR PbCaSn and RSR 009+ will also be performed in copper liberator cells and in cobalt and nickel electrowinning tankhouses to determine their mechanical and electrochemical performance at temperatures of 65-75 oC.INTRODUCTIONLead-based alloys are the primary anodes used in the electrowinning of copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt and manganese from sulfate-based aqueous systems. Lead anode technology has evolved over the years migrating from pure lead and lead-antimonial alloys to the present day PbCaSn alloys for copper and PbAg and PbCaAg alloys for zinc electrowinning (Prengaman, Ellis and Mirza, 2010). It has also migrated from cast to rolled microstructures in search of improved mechanical properties and higher corrosion resistance. Although great strides have been made in the development of new lead anode alloys and production processes for lead anodes to be used in copper electrowinning, the industry still has some unresolved issues. These relate to the necessity of having higher mechanical properties especially for the lead anodes in liberator cells in copper electrorefining and for cobalt and nickel electrowinning as these tankhouses operate at temperatures of 65-75 oC compared to 40-45 oC in case of copper electrowinning."

AMAX Inc. climax's mine-mill complex at Climax, Colorado is best known for its molybdenite production: 50,000 TPY of molybdenite flotation concentrate (95% MoS2) from mill heads containing 0.35% molybdenite. Less recognized are the byproducts that are concentrated from the tails generated in the rougher flotation circuit (see Figure 1). Climax recovers a heavy mineral concentrate by passing the rougher tailings from molybdenite flotation over Humphrey spirals (Figure 2a). This concentrate is floated using xanthate at pH 4 to remove sulfides, principally pyrite. The tails from the pyrite float are then cleaned of quartz, feldspar and light minerals by tabling (Figure 2b). Amine flotation follows at pH 1.5 and 75°C to float monazite (Figure 2c). The present circuit at Climax dries the monazite flotation tailings and utilizes high intensity cross-belt magnetic separation Figure 2d) to generate a high grade wolframite concentrate and a low-grade cassiterite product, both of which are contaminated with the mineral brannerite, (UO, TiO, UO2)TiO3. The uranium specifications have recently become difficult to meet due to the increasing percentage of brannerite reporting in the mill feed. A plant is being built utilizing hot sulfuric acid and sodium chlorate to leach this uranium from the monazite flotation tailings prior to their being fed to the wolframite- cassiterite magnetic separators. This modification is the subject of our paper.

En ese sentido, el presente texto revisa dichos problemas y plantea soluciones respecto a ellos como: diversas mejoras en el régimen de los concursos de las grandes escuelas y duracíón de la preparación, así como una reducción del número de materias enseñadas y la adopción de métodos activos de la enseñanza en lugar de aquéllos que se limitaban a exigir la presencia física de los alumnos.

THE usefulness of the electrical resistivity log in determining reservoir characteristics is governed largely by: (I) the accuracy with which the true resistivity of the formation can be determined; (2) the scope of detailed data concerning the relation of resistivity measurements to formation characteristics; (3) the available information concerning the conductivity of connate or formation waters; (4) the extent of geologic knowledge regarding probable changes in facies within given horizons, both vertically and laterally, particularly in relation to the resultant effect on the electrical properties of the reservoir. Simple examples are given in the following pages to illustrate the use of resistivity logs in the solution of some problems dealing with oil and gas reservoirs. From the available information, it is apparent that much care must be exercised in applying to more complicated cases the methods suggested. It should be remembered that the equations given are not precise and represent only approximate relationships. It is believed, however, that under favorable conditions their application falls within useful limits of accuracy.

In presenting this list of permissible explosives and blasting devices, the Bureau of Mines desires to call attention to pages 19 and 24 outlining, the conditions in use under which, and only under which, the explosive or blasting device is permissible. In view of a recent publication recounting trade practice favoring the use of a blasting device without stemming, particular emphasis is placed upon condition 4 on page 19 and condition 2 on page 24. An explosive or a blasting device enumerated in the permissible lists of this Bureau is not permissible in use unless it is properly confined with clay or other incombustible stemming.

The diffision coefficient for self-diffision of plutonium in the temperature range 350" to 440°C has been measured by using puZ3 as the tracer isotope. Autoradiopaphic techniques were used to inzlestigate the possibility of grain boundary diffusion, hut only evidence for volume diffusion was found. The least-squares fit of the data gives the .following equation for the diffision coefficient: The computer least-squares technique for fitting the nonlinear equations is outlined. DETERMINATION of the self-diffusion coefficient of the fcc 6 phase of plutonium is in principle a straightforward experimental task. However, the chemical reactivity, the intense @ activity, and the toxicity of plutonium put limitations on the experimental techniques. The technique selected included roll bonding for preparation of the diffusion couples and pulse-height analysis of the @-particle activity to determine the distribution of the PU tracer in the diffusion couples. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Couple Preparation. Cylinders about 0.5 in. in diam were cast from two special stocks of plutonium, one of which had been enriched in puZ3', as shown in the isotopic analyses listed in Table I. For each roll-bonded composite sheet, a cylinder 0.437 in. in diam and 0.190 in. thick was turned from each kind of plutonium on a lathe in a 98 pct He atmosphere. The two freshly machined cylinders were positioned face to face in a tube of commercially pure aluminum which had been sealed at one end by welding and the assembly was evacuated on a vacuum manifold overnight. The elapsed time between machining the faces of the plutonium cylinders and evacuating the loaded tube was about 15 min. After overnight evacuation of the assembly the indicated vacuum was 1 X 10"5 torr or better. The aluminum tube was then warmed and pinched off with a cold-welding tool. The pinched-off weld was also fusion-welded as an additional precaution against leakage of air into the evacuated assembly. The assembly was immediately heated for 30 min in a 250°C furnace and reduced in thickness by being passed through a rolling mill with rolls heated to 200°C. The rolling schedule (four passes of 100 mils each with a 10-min reheat after two passes) reduced the thickness of the assembly to 100 mils. The rolled assembly was allowed to cool normally in air. The rolled assembly was sheared at the edges and the aluminum peeled from the composite plutonium sheet. The elliptical sheet was about 0.060 in. thick and usually three 0.383-in.-diam disks could be punched from its central portion. The sheet was heated on a hot plate to the ductile low 0 range (140°C as measured by temperature-indicating pellets) before each disk was quickly punched. The quality of the bond in the disks was evaluated by metallographic examination of the scrap sheet adjoining the hole left by the punch. Only well-bonded specimens without oxide in the interface (as indicated by metallography) were considered satisfactory for further use. More than half of the specimens so examined contained sufficient oxide in the interface to be rejected. Diffusion Anneal. Each disk to be diffusion-annealed was wrapped in 1-mil-thick tantalum foil and sealed within a Pyrex capsule evacuated to 1 x 10~5 torr or better. This capsule was then sealed within another Pyrex capsule at a similar pressure. The diffusion anneals were carried out at temperatures between 350" and 440°C in Marshall furnaces adjusted to have a temperature gradient of not more than *1/2"C over a 5-in. length. This gradient was then further smoothed by using a nickel tube as a liner in the furnace. The liner was divided into three longitudinal cavities by a septum of nickel sheet to which two calibrated Chromel-Alumel thermocouples were attached. One thermocouple was used for controlling the furnace temperature by means of a Brown Pyrovane controller equipped with a Capaciline anticipation circuit; the second thermocouple was monitored twice daily with a Leeds and Northrup K-2 precision potentiometer.

A comprehensive survey is made of the status of the asbestos industry as it relates to marketing the product. Included are descriptions of the various types of asbestos and the grading and classification systems used. The uses of asbestos, distribution practices, and types of ore bodies are all related to marketing. World production, the producers and their capacities and world consumption for 1966-67 are summarized and statistical data are included. Asbestos is a general term describing a family of fibrous minerals of the serpentine and amphibole mineral groups. Asbestos has a long history going back to the time of the Egyptians, when it was used as a lamp wick. The commercial mining of asbestos started in Canada, Russia, and Africa in the 1800's, and the first asbestos products were made in Italy and Russia. The five main types of asbestos are: chrysotile, accounting for 95% of the total mined, amosite, crocido-lite, anthophyllite, and tremolite. Canada, Russia, and Africa are the major producers of asbestos. The commercial utility of asbestos was at first based on the heat resistance of the fibrous mineral in the form of packing, at the start of the industrial revolution. Its current utility is based more on its ability to reinforce binders such as portland cement, rubber, and plastics. Its inertness to the chemical nature of most binders is unique. Most important is its ability to maintain its reinforcing utility when the product is exposed to weather and soil conditions as in asbestos cement boards and pipe, and heat, pressure, and chemical exposure as in brake linings and gaskets and packings. The mineral asbestos is also unique because its fibrous form permits it to be spun and woven to cloth or formed into paper. Many asbestos applications are critical to national defense and at the present time, there are no satisfactory substitutes. Grading and Classification Canadian chrysotile asbestos fiber is graded and priced by length since basically the longer the fiber the higher the utility. The Canadian asbestos industry does not, however, classify the fiber by direct length measurement, but by a dry screening test. The method is called the Quebec Standard Screen (QS) test. One pound of fiber is mechanically shaken in four vertically stacked sieve boxes. The relative proportions remaining on the sieves defines the grade. The longer the fiber, the larger is the amount that stays on the top coarse screens and the less on the lower, finer mesh screens. Other tests can be used to further define the length distribution of fiber such as the wet screen Bauer McNett and the Suter Webb Comb (3 group only). The Canadian grading system divides the milled fibers into 5 main groups: group 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, with 3 group being the longest, and 7 the shortest. Each group is further divided to subgrades, identified in each group by the letters A to Z, with "A" the longest and "Z" the shortest. See Appendix 1 for the Canadian QS classification system. The Russians also use the QS test on chrysotile. The Africans classify their chrysotile into grades similar to Canadian. The African crocidolite and amosite, however, are classified into actual length groups such as l to 2 in. and 2 to 3 in. Amosite and crocidolite are generally longer than chrysotile but also more brittle. Milled asbestos is not composed of staple length fibers like fiber glass or cotton, but of a mixture or blend of fibers ranging from long to short. Milled asbestos has a fiber length distribution similar to the particle size distribution of a powder. For example, the longest group 3 chrysotile grades have a high percentage of the longest fibers (1/2 to 3/4 in.) and low percentage of short fibers (0.003 in.). The figures in Table 1 give the approximate length distribution of the longest, middle, and shortest groups. A second and further method of classifying fiber is the degree to which the fiber bundles are separated to form a larger number of smaller diameter bundles. THROUGH the use of pressure and production records, formation properties and bottom-hole sample data, the performance of an oil reservoir may be studied analytically to define and evaluate the natural forces acting on and within the reservoir. Use is made of material-balance methods and the equations for natural water encroachment to estimate reserves. Methods for calculation of pressures are given. A study of the Jones sand, Schuler field, Arkansas, has been made and is given here to illustrate the value of the methods discussed.

IN a previous study' of the carbide phase of chromium steels, it was shown that chromium carbide (Cr7C3) is a more stable carbide than cementite (Fe3C) at tempering temperatures above about 500°C. in quenched steels containing from about r1to 7.5 per cent chromium. Below this temperature the carbide phase was found to consist of cementite in all of the steels examined. In the present investigation it was found that a similar change in the carbide phase takes place in molybdenum and in chromium-molybdenum steels at approximately the same tempering temperatures. The approximate ranges of occurrence of the alloy carbides Cr7C3, Cr4C, and Mo2C have been determined in steels containing up to 5 per cent chromium, 1 per cent molybdenum and 0.60 per cent carbon. The experimental steels were made in small high-frequency furnaces from Armco ingot iron, low-carbon ferrochromium and calcium molybdate and were poured into 2-in. ingots, which were forged to 1-in. round bars. Sections of the bars were heated to the carbide-solution temperature and cooled rapidly to induce austenite transformation at relatively low temperatures. The steels were subject to some segregation, therefore comparatively high temperatures were necessary to dissolve all of the carbides. The microstructure of the quenched specimens was examined to verify the belief that the carbides had been dissolved, and also to determine the nature of the nonmartensitic structure of incompletely hardened steels. Ferrite and pseudomartensite were present in some of the specimens, but all specimens were quenched at such a rate that pearlite was not formed, in order to ensure the formation of the carbides at temperatures lower than about 500°C. It had been found previously' that in chromium steels the chromium carbide could be produced by transformation of austenite in the pearlite range above 500°C., and, in order to start the tempering treatment with the carbide present as cementite, the absence of pearlite was considered to be essential. The specimens were tempered for 64 hr. to permit the formation of the stable carbide. After tempering, the specimens were submitted to microscopic and X-ray examination. The carbides were separated either electrolytically in a 5 per cent HCl electrolyte or with an acidified copper-potassium chloride solution. The crystal structure of the carbide phases was determined by the Debye-Scherrer type of X-ray patterns. The X-ray patterns obtained from specimens near the boundaries between two types of carbides were generally weak and diffuse as compared with the other patterns. For this reason, and because the more soluble components may be masked, the boundaries between the phases could not be determined precisely. However, the X-ray analysis of electrolytically separated carbides has given consistently reproducible results

Fine particles in liquid suspension can be agglomerated by a number of mechanisms. Well-known methods include the addition of electrolyte to reduce the zeta potential and allow mutual adhesion arid the use of polymeric flocculants to bridge between the particles. A more recent technique, "spherical Agglomeration", is the subject of this paper. The process involves the addition of a second liquid which is immiscible with the suspending liquid and preferentially wets the particles to cause particle adhesion by capillary liquid bridges. Progress in the application of spherical agglomeration to a number of distinct technological fields is reviewed in this paper. The areas of interest include the formation of dense, highly spherical agglomerates, the separation of solids from suspension and the fractionation of complex, multi-component solids mixtures, such as ores. Some of the more interesting recent applications in the energy and environmental fields, such as the beneficiation of' coal and tar sands, are highlighted.

THE advent of curved jaw crusher wearing plates made an approach other than segmental layout analysis desirable for prediction of capacities. For some time it had been known that the drawing board capacities of crushers using these plates had to be considerably modified by complicated experience factors to achieve agreement with results. Because these apparent capacities could be readily increased severalfold by minor crushing chamber shape changes, it was necessary that the utmost precaution be taken in predicting capacities of jaw plates modified for nonchoking, special wear characteristics, or any other reason. To this end the laboratory and field tests outlined by the author in a previous paper' were made on Blake-type jaw crushers. The results of these tests were summarized in a simple first degree equation applicable to crushers using either straight or curved jaw plates. This equation first outlines the maximum capacity potential of a given crusher, then reduces this figure in accordance with installation circumstances by means of a realization factor.

During the past few years of operation at Kings Mountain, N. C., full-scale flotation has generally yielded poorer metallurgical results than those obtained in the laboratory or pilot plant. After 2 min in each size of Denver flotation machine in the spodumene rougher circuit, pilot recovery (41.7 pct) was almost three times that of the plant (13.6 pet) and about twice that of the laboratory (21.0 pet). Pilot and commercial plant data are based on continuous operation, and laboratory results on batch testing of rougher performance. The ore is a pegmatite containing spodumene, feldspar, quartz, mica, and amphibolite. Data were accumulated to evaluate the scale-up relationships between laboratory, pilot plant, and plant flotation cells. Flotation rate constants and dimensional analysis were used to define the relationship existing between flotation behavior and scale of operation.

In this era of rising focus on the social and environmental costs and benefits of mining operations, the valuation methodologies used to assess such impacts become increasingly important. Within an industry dominated by an engineering culture that places emphasis on net present value (NPV) calculations using high discount rates, difficulties often arise when attempting to justify projects with longer-term, harder to quantify benefits. This is particularly so when these benefits fall in the social and environmental domains and involve other stakeholders. In this paper, we summarise the results of a recent literature review on this subject, which focused on the valuation of æBeyond ComplianceÆ initiatives in the mining sector. We discuss a range of approaches including the quantification of hidden internal costs, financial methods of incorporating risk into calculations, the integration of quantitative and qualitative information, and also the valuation of æexternalitiesÆ or costs and benefits borne by others. We then use a series of examples relating to the management of water in the minerals industry to illustrate how some of these approaches could be applied. There are high-level commitments from both individual companies and groups such as the ICMM to incorporate sustainable development criteria into decision-making processes within the industry. We conclude the paper by arguing that, to meet these commitments, there is a need for the industry to adopt a broader range of valuation methodologies than appears to be the case at present.
