According to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the number of potentially contaminated sites in Sweden is approximately 40 000. The funding for remediation from the Swedish Government alone amounts to $A 60 - 80 M (300 - 400 MSEK) annually for the period 2003 - 2006. Uncertainties will arise when obtaining samples in field, preparing them in laboratories and analysing them. Different procedures give rise to varying errors. Using data for decision-making that does not truly represent the site could be fatal. Misclassification of soil could lead to unnecessary costs or to risks to human health and the environment. The total uncertainty of an environmental sample can be split into analytical uncertainty and sampling uncertainty. The analytical uncertainty is usually known and reported from routine analysis. The size of the sampling uncertainty is less well known. Hence, the question is how big are the sampling uncertainties for contaminated soil and how big is the analytical error compared to the total sampling error? A scrap yard and two landfills within a workshop area were investigated. An excavator dug trial pits and samples were taken with a trowel from the walls of the trial pits. Samples were put into plastic bags and taken off site for preparation and analysis using XRF. Sample preparation included drying and sieving. The samples were homogenised by kneading the sample bags prior to analysis. The sampling and sample handling were performed in an intuitively way without knowledge of sampling theory. However, Pierre GyÆs sampling theory was used for subsequent evaluation of the data from the site investigation. The theory defines seven sampling errors, which can be applied to sampling of soil. Some errors have a variance that can be calculated or at least estimated, while other errors can give some idea whether the bias is positive or negative. The total sampling error varied over three orders of magnitudes from sample to sample. The single largest contributor to the large variation in error was the contaminant level. When comparing the analytical error and the total sampling error the ratio varies more than three orders of magnitude.

Since early 1968 the Bureau of Mineral Resources (B.M.R.) has carried out VLF-EM test surveys in various parts of Australia and Papua. The aim of the work, primarily, was to examine the effect- iveness of the method as an exploration tool under a variety of Australian conditions. Selection of test areas was determined by the availability of geological, geophysical and drilling information and by the desirability to include a variety of physical variables such as depth of weathering and topography. The aim of the present account is to review the results of this work and to make an assessment of the method available to the mining industry. The author wishes to acknowledge considerable assistance both by way of data and discussion provided by Messrs. Paul Gillespie (B.M.R.). and John Haigh (formerly B.M.R., now Senior Geophysicist, McPhar Geophysics Australia.) The article is presented with permission from the Director, B.M.R.

INTRODUCTION Limestone injection work was completed in a 440-kW (1.5-million Btu per hour) pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000-kg/h (110,000-lb per hour) industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives were to: (1) identify the important variables that affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum SO2 removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. A more detailed report is given by Lewis et al. (1985). The test program was divided into two phases. The objectives of Phase I were to determine the important variables that affect SO2 reduction and to investigate the effect of limestone addition on combustor operation and heat transfer surfaces. The objective of Phase II was to determine, using only the important variables identified during Phase I, the conditions that resulted in the greatest sulfur dioxide reduction. Phase I Test program Using one limestone, five variables were identified as having an effect on SO2 reduction. These are noted with their respective ranges: heat release rate [103 to 166 kW/m3 (10,000 to 16,000 Btu per hour-cu ft)], Ca/S molar ratio (0 to 3), flue gas oxygen concentration (3% to 5%), additive particle size [90% -150 µm (-100 mesh) and 90% -45 µm (-325 mesh)], and burner stoichiometry (SR = 0.75 and >1.15). A 2.3% sulfur northern West Virginia coal, pulverized to a nominal grind of 70% -75 µm (-200 mesh), was burned for the tests. The limestone used was obtained from a Maysville, KY, quarry and contained 51.75% (wt) CaO. An 11-run statistically designed program (plus three duplicates) was used to screen the five variables. The effect of limestone injection on the combustor heat transfer surfaces was determined by comparing the heat transfer rates through a slag panel and fouling probes during periods with and without limestone injection. Combustor operation was determined by noting any operating problems that occurred during the tests. Test procedure After furnace wall temperatures had stabilized at operating conditions, heat transfer surfaces (slag panel and fouling probes) and the convection section were blown clean, and a four-hour test was begun. The

The hazard to health from contamination of air by a noxious gas depends not only on the potential harmful response attending exposure, but also on the warning properties, which in effect may be termed the "accompanying warning response," This warning may be manifested as an odor, taste, irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, or perhaps headache, vertigo, or nausea. These manifestations may be painful and even slightly harmful, but to a much lesser degree than the primary injury of exposure. The warning response mitigates hazards directly in proportion to the degree of Intolerability which accompanies injurious exposure, and accordingly its absence augments hazards. This accounts for the fact that the actual health hazards from a non-odorous or non-irritating gas or vapor of comparatively low toxicity sometimes equal or exceed the hazard from a considerably more toxic substance, but one which possesses a marked odor or produces eye, nose, or throat irritation in advance of harmful exposure. When a substance lacks the properties for giving warning, it is often possible to impart them by the addition of a small amount of another substance which has an exceedingly high warning intensity. The vapors of this substance, commonly termed a "warning agent" or "tracer gas," escape and mingle with the gas or vapor which lacks warning properties and thereby apprises persons of the latter's presence. The amount of the warning agent added is that which will give adequate warning in advance of serious physiological harm from the dangerous gas or vapor.

In order to investigate production decline in Tarkwa Goldfields Ltd., located in a tropical rain forest, amongst other areas, a health survey was conducted with the aim to see 1. The health status of the workers. 2. Which parameters carry the most information about the health situation and which of them can be applied easily during screening programmes. 3. What steps could be taken to improve the situation. In all 249 workers were investigated. A non-invasive method involving taking of body weight and arterial blood pressure was used. All subjects were required to answer a questionaire. Emphasis was placed on the history of malaria and diarrhoea within the last six months. Both management and workers co-operated fully. Another set of 110 workers from a neighbouring tyre factory were also investigated for control. Among the underground workers, the percentage body weight loss during a shift increased with decreasing body weight. Dehydration levels could be as much as 4 to 5% of body weight. This could be attributed to the fact that workers took insufficient or no water during the shift. The health status of the mine workers was generally poor and in our opinion malnutrition combined with malaria severely threatens the health and well-being of the workers. Hypertension is also a problem. An improvement in production is intimately linked with the well-being of the workers.

Growth directions of tin, zinc, and cadmiun whisker crystals grown spontaneously fi-om the solid are summarized. In tin the edge and diagonal directions of the unit cell are jound with the exception oj- the [110] diagonal. In cadmiurn and zinc the usual dip-ections are a or a + c. The c direction has not been ohserwed. The gvouth directions from the solid are for the most part the same as those found for vapor-grozun crystals and are the ohserz:ed glide directions in plastic j-lou. Whisker crystals of these elements grown from the solid are not twinned. Specular lateral reflections are associated with planes of snall crystallographic indices. WHISKER crystals of tin, zinc, or cadmium grow spontaneously at room temperature in periods from months to years from thin electroplates and other prepared films of the respective metals.''2 It has been established that these crystals are single, but the question of twinning, such as occurs in whisker crystals of silicon,3'4 has not been resolved. Studies of morphology have been restricted to determinations of growth directions.5-' Whisker crystals are both straight and kinked. A few studies have been made on kinked whiskers including measurements of kink anglesa and determinations of growth directions,' but unfortunately not both on the same crystals. The kink angles, for the most part, for each species are grouped closely about a few unique values, but these values are not always those between observed growth directions in a single crystal. To supplement existing data, the growth directions, identification of lateral features, and presence or absence of twinning were determined with a Weissenberg goniometer by a method described elsewhereg on eight whisker crystals of tin, five of zinc, and five of cadmium. One kinked cadmium whisker was examined in detail. The specimens were needlelike, a few microns in cross section, and of the order of a millimeter in length. They were removed from electroplated substrates on laboratory specimens and commercial equipment after several years of growth as described in Table I. Since the specimens were less than 10 p in cross section they were ideally strong with no attendant risk of plastic deformation or damage in handling. Only deformation twinning has been reported for these elements. Therefore, twinning probably should not be expected in whisker crystals of these metals, particularly a twin plane containing the growth direction. A twin plane oriented in this direction was the one sought in this study. No examination was made for twinning at the boundary between kink segments except for one cadmium crystal. Well-defined reflections occur as a whisker crystal of tin, zinc, or cadmium is rotated about its growth direction when illuminated by a beam of light Although these reflections had been noted in earlier investigations, no study of them was made, probably because the earlier studies had disclosed also that

It is the task of this portion of today's session on the new meaning of regional tectonics in the search for ore districts to discuss known interactions of tectonics and ore deposition in the 'new global tectonics' context. I will speak particularly about known applications of the recent tectonic advances to ore finding. Stated yet another way, it's getting on in time toward the "put up or shut up" stage-¬and I would not be here if I thought that the new tectonics were not an effective present matrix for ore finding. Before delving into specific geologic relationships--and I propose to discuss mainly the evolution of an idea which may reveal the presence of a major copper deposit on mainland Mexico--I must note that there have been no published accounts that I know of which assert that a particular discovery has been made soley and specifically because of an interpretation based upon mechanisms directly linked to sea floor spreading or plate tectonics. It is nonetheless true" that several major exploration efforts are based upon such interpretations, and, as is normal when exploration ideas are involved, one does not wish to call attention to an advantageous position in a highly competitive business. Little might be expected to have been announced in so fast-moving and potentially lucrative an area. Another point which needs to be made is that people such as B. S. Butler (1933), Billingsley and Locke (1935 and 1941), Harrison Schmitt (1935), and more recently Mayo (1958) have been working for decades with the tectonic expressions of the emergent tectonics without recog¬nition of the driving forces or the unifying tectonic concepts

Invar is the preeminent low-expansion metal by virtue of the fact that it can be prepared with a zero coefficient of expansion at atmospheric temperature. This fact suggests that there is little room for improvement in the expansion properties of the low-expansion nickel steels. The inference is true, however, only so far as the expansion at and near atmospheric temperature is concerned, because the expansivity of invar starts to increase rapidly on heating above 100" C. and soon reaches the value of copper. Guillaumel met this situation by increasing the nickel content above that of invar. By that expedient, alloys having low expansivity under higher temperatures were obtained, but not without a large increase in minimum expansivity. The increase in minimum expansivity with increasing nickel content severely limits the technical applications of these alloys at high temperatures. Prospects of improving the expansion characteristics of the nickel steels is offered by alloying. Search for an advantageous alloying addition by analogy with other alloy systems, however, is not productive because the low-expansion characteristic is unique with that system. The rule of mixtures usually gives a fair value of the expansivity of other solid-solution alloys, but in the iron-nickel systems gives a value of 18 X 10-6 per deg. C. whereas the actual value is 1 X 10-6 per deg. C. Apparently suitable additions are not to be deduced from such ingenuous considerations. Recognition of the fact that the temperature range of low expansivity in nickel steels is terminated with loss of magnetism affords a more promising basis for the selection of an advantageous element. One may expect from that fact that additions of nonmagnetic elements to the iron-nickel alloys are detrimental to the low-expansion characteristic. Indeed, carbon, manganese, silicon, copper and chromium are detrimental to the expansion properties and no nonmagnetic element is reported to be beneficial. THIS paper deals with the results of a study of the application and development of mining machines for cutting out and removing dirt bands in bituminous coal beds. FACE PREPARATION When one or more dirt bands1 occur in a seam of coal, the problem of elimination of impurities becomes manifest. The degree of complete-ness to which these impurities are removed at the face has an important bearing upon labor costs, haulage costs and outside cleaning costs, and often the ash content of the product is markedly affected. Yet, because the present-day miner is paid for the number of tons he loads he often lacks interest in the quality of the coal. To insure a clean product, a system of penalties for dirty coal is enforced, but control of extraneous impurity content in the loaded coal is often inadequate and ineffectual when coal and banded impurity are shot as one. It seems only logical that to reduce the amount of impurities by proper face preparation before the men are permitted to load the coal is the most efficient method of preparation.

Seven intrusive phases have been mapped to date in the 1 b.y. Red Bluff Granite Complex (RBGC) near El Paso, Texas. This batholith is 20 km2 in area and intrudes older supracrustal units as well as a trachyte ignimbrite cap. Two early microgranite sills are spatially separated 6 km from a porphyritic, three-phase "ring complex" by a tin-bearing, biotite granite which cores the RBGC. These units are intruded, in turn, by a riebeckite granite which locally exhibits lineated and pegmatitic textures as well as exceptionally high light REE and Zr values (800 ppm La; 3,000 ppm Zr). The riebeckite granite is exposed in three separate occurrences within the Franklin Mountains. REE values in the RBGC are depleted in HREE and show distinct negative Eu anomalies. Typical La/Yb ratios are 5:1-2:1 with Eu values ranging from 10-80 ppm. The mineral source of the high REE values in the riebeckite granite has not yet been specifically identified, but is believed to be zircon.

Deep-seated landslides are characterized by slow time-dependent movements induced by constant gravitational creep, and periods of acceleration associated with stress changes within the rock and the preexisting fracture network. Natural stress changes are typically caused by seasonal variations in surface temperatures and groundwater pressures, but also by rare and more violent events such as earthquakes. These processes are responsible for cyclic loading and unloading that leads to rock mass damage, fatigue and progressive failure with time, and may explain sudden, unexpected rock slope acceleration phases. In this work, we present a set of distinct-element models to investigate and compare the role of hydromechanical fatigue and seismic fatigue in the history of a deep-seated landslide. Hydromechanical fatigue arises from the fluctuation of pore pressure in fractures accompanying periods of significant groundwater recharge. In alpine areas, there are usually one or two cycles per year associated with snow melt and intense rainfall periods. In the presence of a deep confined aquifer within the rock slope, the amplitude of pressure fluctuations may reach values of 0.25-0.5 MPa. Hydromechanical models considering such pressure changes are able to reproduce observed slope accelerations-decelerations phases. Substantial accelerations may occur even in the absence of a cycle of exceptional amplitude, depending on the current state of fatigue. At a given time, one or more fractures may be critically-stressed, and a small change in applied stress is enough to cause local failure and induce a crisis of enhanced slope acceleration. This is augmented if the rock slope contains planes of weakness associated with its tectonic history, glacial debuttressing, etc. The corresponding behaviour is analogous to laboratory experiments on rock and metal fatigue. Similar fatigue effects have also been proposed for repeated earthquake events in seismically active regions. Unlike hydromechanical stress changes that occur in a more localized portion of the rock slope, those induced by passing seismic waves involve the entire rock mass. Moreover, the frequency and amplitude of stress perturbations due to earthquakes are different than those induced by pore pressure variations, although both likely contribute in combination to the degradation and progressive failure of large deep-seated landslides when both are present. The results presented illustrate that: (1) assessment of slope stability near critical infrastructure (e.g., hydroelectric reservoirs) should not only consider static stability, but also failure mechanisms related to fatigue that evolve over time and may result in an apparently stable slope progressing towards a critical state due to relatively small but repetitive stress changes; and that (2) characterization of fatigue processes affecting a deep-seated landslide requires multiparametric continuous monitoring at different observation points.

Experience has indicated that hard bronzes are not suitable for bearing applications where high bearing loads and speeds are involved. It is the general practice to utilize softer materials for these purposes, such as copper, lead, silver, babbitt, lead-base alloys, and more recently aluminum-base alloys, preferably supported by a steel backing. It was the objective of the present investigation to study a new material produced by powder metallurgical methods susceptible to precipitation-hardening. Test MAteriaIs Preliminary tests were made with compacts containing copper, nickel and silicon in quantities sufficient to form 3 to 5 per cent nickel silicide. It mas found that this type of alloy was susceptible to the formation of a soft surface shell when sintered in tank hydrogen. The depth of the shell depended On the length of sintering time and sintering temperature, and varied in thickness from a few thousandths to as much as One eighth inch. This soft shell resulted from the preferential oxidation of silicon, thereby reducing the efficiency of age-hardening by the nickel silicide compound. The body of the sintered compacts below the soft shell could be precipitation-hardened to a hardness of 70 to 85 Rockwell B, by quenching from goo°C. and age-hardening at 450°C. A series of tests was made with various addition agents, in order to decrease the rate of preferential oxidation, and it was found that phosphorus was most beneficial in this respect. After considerable experimentation, the following nominal com-position was accepted as standard: 2.4 per cent nickel; 0.8 silicon; 0.3 phosphorus; balance copper. The physical propertties and certain bearing properties of this alloy are described in the present paper Preparation of Compacts Several methods of incorporating the hardening ingredient (nickel silicide) were studied. Compacts formed from copper, nickel and silicon powders were found to be inferior to those fabricated from prealloyed nickel silicide master alloys, because of the rapid oxidation of pure silicon during sintering. The use of a prealloyed nickel silicide hardener containing 25 per cent silicon and 75 per cent nickel could be further improved by preparing a master alloy, incorporating nickel, silicon, phosphorus and copper, having the following nominal composition~ 25 per cent nickel; 7 silicon; 3 phosphorus 64 copper. This alloy is brittle in the cast condition and can be readily powdered. Sintering Procedure The blended powders were pressed at '5 to 40 tons per sq' in., the pressure depending on the size and shape of the compacts. A survey of firefighting facilities and practices in coal mines conducted by the Bureau of Mines3/ showed such variations in equipment and apparent attitude toward fire protection that a comparison with other industry seemed advisable. Although other industry is confined generally to surface operations and the hazards probably are not as great, the same general methods of extinguishment are employed, so that the cost and protection at least should be comparable. An investigation of industry other than mines revealed a generally greater emphasis placed on fire-combating equipment, fire-brigade training, fire-fighting facility inspection, and fire-hazard elimination, as well as a greater average expenditure for fire protection.

As a result, there has been a change in the way geological information is generated, managed and retained within the industry. This paper describes the changes that have taken place in the industry, provides two case studies of how companies manage their geological Intellectual Property and reviews some of the issues associated with management of in-house and outsourced geology services.

Clay mineralogic studies of ore versus barren rocks in the Grants mineral belt show that some combination of chlorite (rosette form), illite, mixed layer illite-montmorillonite, (- Mg-montmorillonite) are penecontemporaneous with uranium minerals in trend ore; these same clay minerals plus kaolinite are related to the roll type ore near the main redox front of the Grants mineral belt. Clay minerals from barren rocks are characterized by a greater abundance of Na-montmorillonite, kaolinite, and face-to-edge form chlorite. Chlorites from ore zones contain much more vanadium than do chlorites from barren rocks. Trend ore probably formed from southeasterly flowing waters following paleochannels in the Late Jurassic. These deposits are found almost entirely in reduced rocks, and organic carbon may have been an important reductant to remove U-V-Se-Mo from solution as carbonate from ore zones contains some organic carbon based on stable iso¬tope studies. Uplift, remobilization and reprecipitation of some of the trend ore resulted in the formation of redistributed ore, some of which possesses a roll type geometry. Mineralization for the roll type ore was apparently controlled by sulfide-sulfate equilibria at or near the main redox front in the Grants mineral belt. Trend and roll type ore possess different assemblages of clay minerals and different trace element abundances. Laramide faults cut both trend and some roll type ore. Stack ore is found in Laramide fault zones. Limited oxygen isotopic data from clay minerals in two mines at Ambrosia Lake in reduced rocks indicate probable preservation of ancient, formational waters and no evidence for infiltration by young meteoric waters. This information, plus the pre-Laramide faults, suggest, but do not unequivocally prove, that the main redox front has been relatively stable since its formation, probably some time in the Cretaceous. Younger encroachment of the redox front in post-Laramide is proposed by others, however, and the problem is unresolved. Uranium for the deposits was most likely carried in solution as an oxyion, probably as (UO2(CO3)2.2H2O)2- or (UO2(HPO4)2)2-, although organic transport cannot be entirely ruled out. Oxyions of vanadium, selenium, molybdenum and possibly arsenic and antimony, are interpreted from Eh-pH diagrams to have been segregated and transported with U6+ soluble species and precipitated when a chemically reducing environment was reached. The rare earth elements are also enriched in ore zones, but it is not clear if they were transported with the U-V-Se-Mo-(As)-(Sb) suite or derived from a more local source.

"El propósito del siguiente estudio es mostrar el análisis comparativo de los reactivos de flotación de las distintas nacionalidades (americana, alemán, japonés)-en tanto herramienta de conocimiento y difusión- para el manejo de plantas metalúrgicas del país. Los factores a considerar en dicho estudio fueron: igualdad en factor molienda, densidad de pulpa, pH en el circuito, tiempo de flotación y prueba de paladas. Los reactivos utlizados son Xantato(Z-3), Xantato,(Z-4), Xantato(Z-5),Aeroflat 15, Aeroflat 25 y aceite de pino,respectivamente. Concluyendo que de cada reactivo estudiado, se compara su calidad como promotor y factor precio. Así para el XANTATO Z-3, el Xantato americano y alemán son de calidad semejante, con la variante que el alemán es un 22% más económico en su precio de compra. En cuanto al xantato japonés es de menor fuerza que los anteriores, siendo su precio más o menos igual al alemán. En el XANTATO Z-4, el xantato americano es de mejor calidad que los otros dos, aunque estos son también un 22% más económicos. Para el XANTATO Z-5, no hay casi diferencia entre el xantato alemán y el americano en cuanto a su calidad como promotor. El precio del xantato alemán es un 30% menor que el americano. En cuanto al xantato japonés es de menor fuerza que los anteriores, siendo su precio mayor que el xantato alemán. CREEP rupture characteristics of high purity Al-Mg solid solution alloys were studied by Mul-lendore and Grant' to investigate solid solution strengthening of pure aluminum and the accompany- ing effects on deformation and fracture characteristics. This paper presents the results of an extension of that work to A1-Cu and Al-Zn alloys to permit a comparison of the relative effects of the three solute elements on the high temperature strength and on the deformation and fracture characteristics. The application of geophysical technology relative to the exploration, planning, and operation of coal mines is expanding. This is due to the trend of the industry to increase the size of operations, use of mechanized equipment and mining of more difficult coals, where unforeseen conditions can affect mine profitability. Coal is a good geophysical target because of its lower density, higher electrical resistivity, lower seismic wave velocity, and lower magnetic susceptibility in comparison to typical country rock. The more important techniques are well logging, high resolution seismic reflection, seam wave velocity, and radar. These methods can be used to map coal horizons, determine the physical properties of the coal, and identify mining hazards. The methods are not a pancrea however. Their use should be based on a careful assessment of their expected success and cost benefit analysis in comparison with conventional technology, primarily drilling, which none of the techniques presented should entirely replace. In general, the level of technology developed for geophysics surpasses their current level of application to coal problems. In some cases, identifying hazards in advance of mining using seam wave seismic in particular, the state of the art has been developed in Europe and is awaiting fruitful application in the United States.
