Wound rotor motors are used in difficult mining applications where there is a need to start high inertia, hard starting loads while limiting inrush current They are recognized as robust and simple to control. This paper will cover the performance, specification, and important issues to be considered when applying medium voltage wound rotor motors in mining applications. Medium voltage grinding, crusher, and conveyor applications will be discussed. Specifically covered are motor efficiency, speed range, and rotor control. Crane motors often have wound rotor construction, but their load cycle and ratings are outside the scope of this paper.

THE rate of flotation of solid particles determines the percentage recovery of these particles which can be obtained during a given time interval. It is an established fact that the recovery is greatest in the fine sand size range and falls off on either side of this size range. It is also a fact that the history of the development of concentrating devices has been marked by a desire to recover the small particles: tables were developed to treat material too fine to recover in jigs; flotation recovers material too fine to be recovered on tables. As our ores become more complex and require finer grinding, a greater proportion is in the slow-floating size range. It is therefore of economic importance that the effect of size of particle upon rate of flotation be studied. Many studies have been made along this line. The present investigation attempts to quantify the rate of flotation by means of a rate equation, and then compares the effect of size upon the rate of flotation. It was found that the flotation rate constant increases with increase in diameter of particle in the size range smaller than the optimum size particle. The flotation rate constant decreases with an increase in diameter of particle in the size range coarser than the optimum size particle. This suggested two different actions taking place, and these are discussed. Suggestions for further work in order to improve the flotation rate of both fine and coarse particles are made. The usual method of expressing rate is to plot cumulative percent recovery vs time. If we knew the equation of this kind of curve we could replot it as a straight line, and the slope of the line would be an index of the magnitude of the flotation rate. It is easier to compare straight lines than curves. The basis used for obtaining the equation of the recovery vs time curve is the law of mass action. This law states that the "rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the 'active masses' of the reacting substances present at any given time." This, of course, implies a constant temperature. We can modify this for our use by using the term flotation reaction instead of chemical reaction and the term floatable particle instead of active masses. dC Thus----— kc [1] where C denotes concentration of particles, t denotes time, k denotes a proportionality constant. If the exponent of C is 1, then we have a first order rate reaction. If the exponent of C is 2, then we have a second order rate reaction. For a first order rate reaction, we obtain, after integration, where k is again a proportionality constant and has the dimension of the reciprocal of time. C, is the original concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles. C, is the concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles remaining in the flotation cell after time t. If all particles of the mineral to be floated were capable of floating we could take C, as 100 and C, would be 100 - R, where R is the cumulative percentage recovery of mineral at time t. But it is not usual for all of the particles to be capable of floating, because of surface oxidation, etc. Therefore, we must introduce a factor x which is the percentage of un-floatable mineral. Hence the first order equation is It has been proposed by various workers1-' that this equation describes the flotation rate. More recently N. Field studies and laboratory research have established the fact that the expulsive force which drives petroleum into wells, from the reservoir sands in which it is stored by nature, is primarly an expression of the energy latent within compressed natural gas dissolved or occluded in, or otherwise associated with the oil. Each barrel of oil produced is forced into the recovery well by the expansive energy of a certain volume of compressed gas, originally stored with the oil in the pores of the reservoir rock; and each cubic foot of gas so produced with the oil and expanded to atmospheric pressure reduces by so much the total natural energy available for oil expulsion. This relationship between the volumes of gas and oil produced has seemed so important that petroleum production technolo-gists have come to regard the "gas-oil ratio," or the "gas factor" as it has been more conveniently termed, as a measure of oil-production efficiency. Different methods of oil recovery and production devices are now Com pared on this basis and estimates of ultimate recovery obtainable through their use are considered by many to be inversely proportional to the values of their respective gas factors. The writer has been among those who have given support to a widcspread movement toward a proper recognition of the significance of the gas factor as a guide in the control of producing oil wells, and does not wish to oppose its more extended application. It seems necessary, how-cvcr, in view of the almost elemental faith with which the principle of the gas factor has been received in many quarters, to point out that it is a most complex factor, and one which cannot be regarded as an absolute index of production efficiency without due regard to other contributing factors by which it is influenced to an important degree. Variables Influencing Gas Factor The mere recording of a low gas factor, obtained through the use of some method or device, does not necessarily imply efficient oil production; and conversely, a high gas factor does not always signify inefficient recov-

An attempt is made to explain the effect of stress on strain aging by examining the mechanism of yielding for a group of aged dislocations. The experimental results on which the theory is based indicate that a linear relationship develops between the aging stress and the discontinuous yield effect in a low carbon steel THE discontinuous yield effect that occurs in bcc metals after strain aging is usually explained by the interaction of interstitial atoms with individual dislocations. Attempts have been made to interpret the kinetics of strain aging in terms of interstitial segregation to nonrandom groups of dislocations1-3 but apart from Li's4 work little or no effort has been made to examine the effect of groups of aged dislocations on mechanical properties. It appears likely that such groups can be stabilized if a positive load is maintained on the specimen during aging5 and, furthermore, that the enhanced strain aging effect associated with aging under load might be due to the stability of these aged groups. The effects associated with this latter phenomenon have been described by Almond and Hull, Ref. 5, Figs. 2 and 3, and it is found that the upper yield stress, the lower yield stress, and the yield point elongation are increased by aging under load. The yield point elongation reaches a maximum value but the enhanced effect persists in the upper and lower yield stress values even after extended aging treatments when the general level of the flow stress curve rises. The flow stress, as measured at 8.5 pct total strain, however, is independent of aging stress. Almond and Hull5 showed that it was unlikely that the differences in mechanical properties could be caused by stress enhanced diffusion and they suggested that the effect was in some way associated with the different dislocation distributions that are obtained when specimens are aged with and without an applied stress. At that time no explanation was offered for the strengthening effect produced by stabilized dislocation distributions but additional tests have been performed to establish a quantitative relationship between aging stress and mechanical properties, and also to examine more closely the effect of varying the procedure for applying the aging stress. EXPERIMENTAL The material used was an iron wire containing 0.015 wt pct C, 0.002 wt pct N, and 0.006 wt pct 0. Tensile specimens with a 1 cm gage length and 0.08 cm diam were annealed at 850°C for 1 hr in vacuum to establish a grain diameter of 0.032 mm and then aged at 200°C for 24 hr. After this treatment the amount of carbon left in solution would be less than 10-4 wt pct, and ni- as aging time is increased. It is suggested that this observation, and effects that arise from varying the method of applying the aging stress, can be explained by a strengthening mechanism whereby dislocations are more difficult to move when they are aged in piled-up groups. trogen would be the main cause of strain aging. Tensile tests were performed in a hard beam machine at a constant crosshead speed of 0.02 cm per min and the specimen chamber was immersed in a temperature controlled silicone oil bath at 32" * 0.05"C. RESULTS All specimens were prestrained 5 pct before aging under stress and the results in Figs. 1 to 5 show the effect of aging time and aging stress on the following parameters ?UY = auy — ?F(5); i.e., the difference between the upper yield stress after aging,?uy, and the flow stress after prestraining 5 pct, ?f(5). ?LY = sly —sf(5); the difference between the lower yield stress after aging, ojy, and the flow stress after prestraining 5 pct. s8.5 = the flow stress at 8.5 pct total strain after aging at 5 pct strain. Varying the Loading Procedure. Three variations in the procedure for applying the aging stress were examined; i) After prestraining, the specimen was unloaded to a stress of 18 kg mm-2, aged at that stress, and then tested. ii) After prestraining, the specimen was unloaded to 2 kg mm-" then reloaded to 18 kg mm-', aged at that stress, and tested. iii) After prestraining, the specimen was unloaded to 18 kg mm-', aged at that stress, then unloaded to 2 kg mm- before testing. "Previous testwork by the authors has indicated that both granular coconut shell based activated carbon and a new microporous carbonaceous bead, Lewatit® AF 5, are highly effective in improving the oxidation kinetics and decreasing the elemental sulphur yield when assisting the atmospheric oxidation of pyrite. While the two carbon catalysts show similar results and improvements to the pyrite oxidation, there are differences between them. For example, the activated carbon assisted oxidation showed faster kinetics than the AF 5 assisted oxidation, while elemental sulphur seemed to remain adhered to the surface of the AF 5 after oxidation when much of the elemental sulphur formed during the activated carbon assisted tests was found in the oxidation residue. The objective of this paper is to investigate the differences between the two catalysts through the use of scanning electron microscopy, photography, Raman spectroscopy, surface chemistry analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. With this investigation the authors should be able to achieve a better understanding of the surface chemistry of the two carbon catalysts (i.e. functional groups, charges, acidity etc.) and help explain the strengths and/or the weaknesses of the catalysts when applied to the atmospheric oxidation of pyrite.INTRODUCTION Previous research conducted by the authors, indicated that both a granular coconut shell based activated carbon (activated carbon) and a microporous carbonaceous bead, Lewatit® AF 5 (AF 5), acting as a catalyst enhanced atmospheric pyrite oxidation in ferric sulphate media by approximately 40% when compared to unassisted oxidation and that elemental sulphur yields were increased from 23% to approximately 69 and 63% when assisted by AF 5 and activated carbon respectively (Cowan, Jahromi, & Ghahreman, 2017). The study indicated that although total pyrite oxidation assisted by the two catalysts was similar, differences were noticed in the impact that the two catalysts had on the outcome of the oxidation. Kinetic curves in the Cowan et al. study indicated that atmospheric oxidation of pyrite seemed to reach completion after 48 hours of oxidation when assisted by activated carbon. A similar trend was noticed in the kinetic curves for oxidation when assisted by AF 5, however the oxidation curve did not reach completion until approximately 96 hours (Cowan et al., 2017). This observation indicated that the kinetics of pyrite oxidation are enhanced by both catalysts, oxidation kinetics are much faster when assisted by activated carbon rather than AF 5."

Coal degradation is the breakage of coal particles to finer sizes due to the continuous forces of attrition and gravity to which coal is subjected during mining, handling, and preparation. The objective of this paper is to determine the extent of degradation that a coal slurry experiences when transported through pumps and pipelines. The examination of degradation results for a number of different coal slurries have indicated that the extent of breakage is dependent on the physical properties of coal and the time span of circulation. These results have also indicated that certain size fractions of coal are more susceptible to breakage than others.

Determine the extent of upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders (UECTD's) in the U.S. mining industry. Background UECTD's are injuries that develop gradually over a period of time as a result of repeated stress to a particular body part without adequate time between stresses for full recovery to occur. The stresses that contribute to UECTD's may occur because of the following work components: awkward position of wrist or arm, excessive manual force, high repetitions of manual movement and effort, cold environment, and vibration. Cumulative trauma injuries to the arm and hand have become an ever growing concern among safety and health professionals in a number of different industries and work settings, such as meatpacking operations, assembly-line work, and keyboarding. Mine workers arc also exposed to a combination of stressors and work design deficiencies that result in arm and hand injuries. For example, certain job tasks and environments, such as that of an underground jackleg driller, expose miners to segmental (hand-arm) vibration and cold temperatures. Operators of underground mobile equipment, such as scoops and trams, regularly have their hands in direct contact with vibrating levers and controls.

The distribution of mineral deposits within northwestern North America (Alaska, Yukon, and northern British Columbia) allows for an in-depth examination of the metallogenic patterns of a growing continental margin. A more complete understanding of the tectonic evolution of this part of the Pacific Rim, achieved over the last 15 to 20 years, now allows for the placement of ore systems into a well-defined plate tectonic framework. Ore deposits older than about 185 Ma represent hydrothermal systems that were active in the platform/shelf environment of ancestral North AmericaÆs miogeocline or hydrothermal systems developed in oceanic arcs and continental fragments more distal to the craton. These include important SEDEX, VMS, and pre-accretionary porphyry deposits. In contrast, most mineral deposits younger than about 185 Ma were formed within the growing Cordilleran orogen, as terranes were accreted to the continental margin during interactions between the North America and Pacific/Farallon/Kula plates. Such syn- to post-accretionary mineralised systems include many large lode gold and porphyry/skarn systems.

For nine years, from mid-1987 to mid-1996, the copper market enjoyed what appeared to be an endless boom in which prices were much higher relative to production costs than for most other base metals. After the boom ended abruptly mid-1997 with the Sumitomo affair, copper was burdened by an overhang of new projects that promised to swamp demand in what, with the Asian financial and economic crisis of 1997, had become a considerably worse consumption environment. Now, demand prospects do not look so bad. If, as we suspect, we will be dealing with a more rational market in the future, it becomes all the more important to forecast accurately the prospects for consumption. In this paper, we present a new methodology for copper demand forecasting. The methodology forms the backbone of the demand-side analysis for the multi-client study entitled "Long Tenn Outlook for Copper", co-authored by Metalica Ltd. and Bloomsbury Minerals Economics (BME). Key components of the methodology are as follows. (1) Relate demand to economic structure. (2) Focus on products rather than refined consumption. (3) Apply a consistent products/applications analysis to all countries and time series. (4) Incorporate scrap market dynamics within the analytical framework.

FERROUS metallurgy today, defined as the art of extracting money from iron ores, appears to suffer from a complex of inherited theory. In so far as pig iron costs contribute to inadequate profit margins, this symptom may be diagnosed as due to persistence, despite disproval, of Sir Lowthian Bell's theories of reduction. An attempt to meet the economic situation by reducing costs through improving blast-furnace metallurgy would be inconsistent with Bell's theories. These theories, though refutable on the facts of practice, still prevail and today's metallurgy, as measured by its fuel economy or smelting efficiency ranging between 30 and 40 per cent. is no better than Bell's, showing a specific efficiency of 36 per cent.1 If fair to neglect dry-blast operations, it appears that the advance in furnace practice since Bell's day, as shown by a tenfold increase in individual furnace capacity, has been largely mechanical and that the metallurgy of the process has not been changed materially, since the introduction of blast heat, patented in 1828. It seems fair to attribute, this lack of progress on the strictly metallurgical side to a domination of the industry by false ideas first expressed by Lowthian Bell. What the furnace seems to need first, in the interest of lower costs and of better iron, is some destructive criticism of these ideas, in moderate doses, to be followed by a constructive theoretical treatment; then, research and still more research.

Fine screening, as discussed in this paper, pertains to the use of the Rapifine DSM Screen to make a 65 to 325-mesh separation at production tonnages. The greatest number of Rapifine Screen installations are in magnetic taconite plants where the unusual relationship between the grinding mill, cyclone classifier, magnetic separators, and fine screens makes the Rapifine Screen application unique. Since the initial fine screening installation on magnetite in 1961, (1) additional installations and further testwork have contributed to the fund of information which is the basis of this paper. The addition of fine screens to the grinding-classifying circuit of a magnetic taconite plant creates a change that effects all components of the circuit. Pine screens in a non-magnetic plant have also been investigated, but here the benefits have not' been as clearly defined. Screens classify according to the particle size. Hydrocyclones classify by a combination of particle size and particle weight. The change in the type of classification minimizes overgrinding of the mineral. The resultant savings in grinding power can be used to increase the throughput, upgrade the product, or increase recovery.

The w transformation in the Zr-Nb system was studied using X-ray diffraction, dilatometric, re-sistornetric, hardness, and metallographic techniques. w forms in a diffusionless, completely reaersible manner on quenching and in a diffusion-controlled manner- on aging. The temperature at which w begins to form on quenching was determined as a Junction of composition and was found to decrease with increasing solute content. w formed bv aging establishes a metastable equilibrium with an enriched ß phase. The ß/w + ß transus has been determined for this metastable equilibrium and employed to rationalize retrogression and reversion phenomena observed in these alloys. The decomposition mechanism is discussed in terms of a gradual or continuous transformation from ß to the w state. BETA- stabilizing alloying elements lower the MS temperature of the martensitic bcc (ß) to hcp (a') transformation in zirconium and titanium alloys. In certain titanium alloys, a lower symmetry modification of the martensitic structure, termed (a"), also has been reported.1,2 These martensitic transformations are suppressed when the amount of the ß-stabilizing element exceeds a critical level. However, the high-temperature ß phase cannot be quenched to room temperature without change. At alloy contents just above the critical level, |ß trans-forms to the w phase when cooled rapidly.3-6 The amount of w in quenched alloys is reduced by increasing alloy content, and this phase virtually disappears above a critical composition.5 In addition to the transformation during cooling, w also can be formed by aging ß at temperatures below approximately 500°C, and significant alloy enrichment of retained 13 accompanies the isothermal transformation.1-8 The structure of LC is closely related to that of the ß from which it forms.9-15 The bcc (ß) lattice can be generated using a hexagonal cell with three atoms located at (000) and ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/3). This cell has an axial ratio of 0.612 and is oriented with respect to the cubic cell such that (0001)H (111)C and [1120]H [101]C. Consequently, there are four possible orientations of the hexagonal cell, associated with the four (111) planes of the bee lattice. Formally w can be obtained from 0 by allowing the two atoms at the ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/3) positions to approach the coordinates ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/2) and there are four equally probable orientations of w for each 0 grain. In titanium alloys w retains the cubic axial ratio of 0.612" and hence also can be indexed as triply cubic, but this is not the case for aged Zr-Nb alloys where w is clearly hexagonal with an axial ratio of 0.622." The lattice parameters and atomic positions of w depend on thermal history and alloy content. The atomic positions (000), ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/2) provide reasonable agreement between calculated and observed diffracted intensities for w in the fully aged condition.10,14 In the quenched condition, on the other hand, the atoms appear to be displaced from the central plane12,13,15 and assume positions ±(2/3, 1/3, Z = 0.42-0.48) rather than ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/2). This results in a structure with trigonal rather than hexagonal symmetry. The readily detectable parameter and axial-ratio changes of w in Zr-Nb alloys make this system especially attractive for studying the structural changes that occur in the formation and aging of w. Particular attention in this investigation has been directed to the relationship between the structure of w in the quenched and aged conditions, and to certain aspects of the reaction kinetics. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Zr-5, 12, 17.5, and 25 pct Nb alloys were prepared by a double arc-melting practice, encased in stainless-steel cans and hot-rolled to 1/8-in.-thick sheet.* Charged weights have been employed for the niobium contents and interstitial analyses are reported in Table I. Dilatometric, X-ray diffraction (filtered CuK, and MoK, radiation), metallographic, and hardness techniques have been employed to follow the transformations during isothermal and quench-aging heat treatments. "In 2017, the total estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States increased by 6 percent from 2016 (Table 1). The value of metals produced domestically increased by 12 percent and the value of industrial minerals produced domestically increased by 3 percent. Some metal commodity values (cobalt, magnesium metal and palladium) increased by more than 35 percent in 2017 from 2016 owing to higher prices.Some U.S. metal mines and processing facilities remained idle in 2017, including three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and a byproduct vanadium production facility in Utah. In contrast, new gold mines opened in late 2016 and 2017 in Nevada and South Carolina, respectively, and iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota restarted or operated for the full year. In addition, increased oil and natural gas drilling activity led to increased production of some industrial mineral commodities that are used for oil and gas drilling. Production of some industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction, remained essentially unchanged in 2017, a reflection of the limited growth in construction activity. The production of some metals, including iron and steel, aluminum and other nonferrous metals and nonmetallic mineral products increased. Overall, mining activity trended upward as the result of increases in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is commonly segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of natural aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities, thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1)."

The need for a practical method of deciding upon new alloy steel analyses to widen its markets was the problem facing the Chrome Steel Works at the beginning of 1927. In addition to determining the physical properties of the alloys under consideration, it was necessary to test their value in service. Small melts of steel in a crucible, from which test specimens could be made, were insufficient to determine more than physical properties, therefore actual castings and ingots had to be made before the products could be placed in service. Furthermore, to save further experimental work, it was desirable that these heats should be made on a "pilot" basis; that is, actually duplicating regular open-hearth furnace practice. Therefore a one-ton (2000-lb.) acid open-hearth furnace was built. Furnace Design There are no special features in the design of this furnace. Standard acid open-hearth practice is followed, with the reproportioning of the dimensions necessitated by its small size; notably, a considerably increased length in proportion to width in order to get proper flame propagation. After the first heat was made it was found that the check-ers were insufficient. The checker chambers were increased in size and the checker openings were made much smaller. The furnace was started late in March, 1927, and made 65 heats. Experimental work was then stopped unti1, the data accumulated could be worked up and summarized. The run was resumed in November and the furnace is still operating, having made at this writing 60 additional heats. For the last series of runs, there was some rebuilding of both the furnace itself and the checkers. Slag pockets were added. Fig. 1 shows details of construction; Fig. 2, the general appearance. All designing was done by the operating and engineering staff. Construction materials were those available around the plant. The reversing valve is a standard butterfly type taken from an old furnace. The slag pockets and checkers are cleaned by digging down to arched openings which have been bricked up.

"Deformation Banding ( DB ) in cold rolled mild steel has been experimentally established by microstructure investigation. Deformation banding model includes such deformation mode when it is applied to rolling texture simulation. The cause for the occurrence of deformation banding is the reduction of the total work for plastic deformation through a relaxation of the deformation constraints. In the first DB model, all grains are assumed to band from the first deformation step. Such an unrealistic assumption has been eliminated in the new model by the introduction of a banding criterion based on an energy minimizing approach. The prediction is closer to the measured texture by applying banding criterion and setting critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS) ratio for { 110 } and { 112 } slip modes to 0.85.IntroductionBased on the continuum theory of plastic flow and deformation mechanism of crystallographic dislocation slip, Taylor's FC ( Full Constrain ) theory [1] has been widely used in texture modeling. As the process of cold rolling of sheet materials produces a microstructure consisting of elongated or equiaxed flat grain or cell, the ""lath"" and ""pancake"" relaxed constraints ( RC ) models [2, 3] were introduced as the successful improvements over the classical FC model. It has been also recognized that crystals may split into different orientations during deformation and the term deformation banding is used to describe such deformation processes [4, 5]. Lee et al. [6, 7] pointed out that the success of the RC theory in predicting textures depends on the physical processes of deformation banding. They developed so called Deformation Banding ( DB ) model by considering DB in the longitudinal plane to be accounted for by the RC method and allowing DB in the rolling plane. DB model was applied to simulate the texture development in bee case [8], the predicted bee rolling textures are in reasonable agreement with the measured textures. In the first DB model, however, all grains are assumed to band right upon the first deformation step. A banding criterion was formulated [7] which states that DB will occur if the work used in DB model is less than that in RC model. "This paper compares several distinct types of mineral deposits associated with different families of granitoid rocks in the New Brunswick Appalachians. Porphyry copper deposit s are associated with late-stage differentiates of Lower to Middle Devonian I-type igneous complexes. Contact metasomatic deposits were formed where these plutons intrude carbonate rocks and they gave rise to vein deposits in fracture zones near wrench faults. The I-type granitoids were emplaced mainly in areas of thin continental crust and locally along prominent faults in areas of thick continental crust.In contrast, tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bearing greisen deposits and skarns, and antimony-bearing quartz veins are associated with predominantly S-stype granitoid complexes ranging in age from Middle Devonian to early Carboniferous. The mineral deposits occur within or along the contacts of very fractionated (specialized) late phases of these intrusive complexes, which are characterized by high K2O/Na2O, Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba, and low Fe, Mg, Zr and Ti contents. These specialized granitoids are in a large wrench fault zone that cuts across thick continental crust in southwestern and central New Brunswick.IntroductionA great variety of igneous intrusions and subvolcanic stocks were emplaced in the New Brunswick Appalachians during the latter stages of and immediately after the Acadian Orogeny (late Lower to Middle Devonian) and during the subsequent Hercynian Orogeny (Carboniferous). The presence or absence and characteristics of mineral deposits associated with these intrusions reflect the level of intrusion, the composition of the associated igneous rocks and the composition of the invaded sequences.Nickel-copper sulphide deposits occur in mafic intrusions in the St. Stephen area of the southwestern Magaguadavic - St. Croix Zone and in the Goodwin Lake area of the northeastern Mirarnichi Zone. Contact metasomatic and vein-type copper-rich base metal sulphide deposits and porphyry copper deposits with or without molybdenum are related mainly to high-level granitoid stocks of intermediate composition in the Matapedia-Tobique and northwest Miramichi zones. Tintungsten - molybdenum deposits with or without base metal sulphide minerals and antimony-uranium deposits are mainly associated with Upper Devonian and Lower Carboniferous biotite-muscovite granites and related 'subvolcanic intrusions that occur in an arc-shaped belt extending from the southwestern Magagaudavic - St. Croix Zone into the central Mirarnichi Zone."

INTRODUCTION Radon-222 is an inert, radioactive gas formed by the radioactive decay of radium-226, a long-lived member of the uranium-238 decay chain. Radium is present in varying amounts in virtually all soils and, on the average, about 36,000 pCi (1330 Bq) of radon per square meter of soil diffuse into the atmosphere each day (UN 1977). Radon decays with a half-life of 3.6 days through four short-lived daughters to lead210 and it is these short-lived daughters[ [Ra A, (218Po, t, = 3.0 min) , Ra B, (214 Pb, t;, = 27 min), Ra C, (214Bi, t] = 20 min) and Ra C1 (214Po, t] = 2.5 x 10-6 min)] ]which cause the major health hazard associated with radon (Bale 1951). Atoms of these daughters, either unattached or attached to the ever-present particles in air, are deposited on the surfaces of the respiratory tract; alpha particles emitted in their decay can result in large doses to the cells of the bronchial epithelium lining the respiratory tract. These daughters will be present in air in varying relative concentrations depending on the "age" of the air (time since radon emanated into it) and on the amount of mixing of radon and radon daughter contaminated air with clean air. [The practical unit developed to quantify the amount of radon daughters in air is the Working Level (WL). This unit was historically related to the equilibrium concentration of 100 pCi (3.7 Bq) of the short-lived daughters of radon in one liter of air (cf. Holaday 1969) and is defined as any mixture of the short-lived daughters in a liter of air that have a-potential alpha energy of 1.3 x 105 Mev (2.08 x 10-5J) in their decay to lead-210. The working level month (WLM) was developed along with the WL, and was defined as an exposure to one WL for a working month (170 h). This is equivalent to 2.2 x 107 MeV•h•L-1 (3.54 x 10-3 J.h.m-3). If the average breathing rate is taken as 1.2 m3.h•1 (ICRP 1975), then one WLM is equivalent to inhalation of 4.24 mJ of potential alpha energy.] It is now generally agreed that the inhalation of radon daughters is the major potential radiation hazard in uranium mining, and contributes a substantial fraction to the natural radiation exposure of the general population due to the accumulation of radon and radon daughters from natural sources in buildings. Radon daughter concentrations in modern mines are controlled by ventilation, and by blocking off old working areas (cf. Simpson, 1959). However, before the hazard from radon daughters was recognized, considerably higher concentrations of radon daughters were present in some uranium and non-uranium mines. These high radon daughter concentrations resulted in an increase in lung cancers in the mining population, and it is these results that are our main source of information on the risk of inhaling radon daughters. HISTORICAL REVIEW Many excellent reviews of the history of understanding the health effects of inhalation of radon daughters are available (see, for example, Hueper 1942, Lorenz 1944, Sikl 1950, Stewart 1964, Holaday 1969, Lundin 1971, Cross 1979) but a brief summary of some of the highlights in this area may be of interest. [a] 1556: Agricola describes an unusual and fatal chest disease occurring among underground miners in the region of Schneeberg and Joachimsthal (Jachymov) in the Erz mountains in Central Europe. (It is of some historical interest to note that Agricola's book was translated from Latin into English by a mining engineer and his wife; the engineer later became President of the U.S.A.) [b] 1879: Haerting and Hesse indicated that the majority of deaths among Schneeberg miners were due to lung cancer; the lung cancers in these miners (who were incidentally not cigarette smokers) were observed twenty to fifty years after they began working in the mines. [c] 1896: Discovery of natural radioactivity by Becquerel, followed by discovery of radon by Dorn in 1900. [d] 1924: Ludewig and Lorenser report high concentrations (400 - 15000 pCi or 15 - 570 Bq per liter) of radon in the air in the Schneeberg mines and suggest that radon could be responsible for the high rate of lung cancer among miners. However, the reason why radon should cause lung cancer specifically was still not really understood up to twenty years later (Lorenz 1944). High concentrations of radon in the air in the Joachimsthal mines were reported by Behounek in 1927 and a high incidence of lung cancer among Joachimsthal miners (similar to that among miners at Schneeberg, which is only some 30 km distant but in a different political district) was noted at about the same time (Sikl 1930; cf. Sikl 1950). It is estimated that about half of the Joachimsthal miners died from lung cancer and about half from silicosis and tuberculosis (Sikl 1950). [e] 1930's and 1940's: Radioactive ores are deliberately mined in the U.S.A., Canada and other countries primarily as a source of radium for medical purposes and for luminescent dials; other radioactive ores are mined as a source of several non-radioactive minerals, while extensive uranium mining did not begin until the late 1940's. [f] 1940: Based on crude epidemiology and dose calculations, Evans and Goodman propose 10 pCi L-1 as a maximum permissible concentration of radon in continued human exposure. This is the first known recommended maximum permissible concentration for radon. This recommendation was adopted by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards in 1941 and reconfirmed in 1953. [g] 1945: Mitchell identifies the short-lived daughters in radon as a likely cause of the increased lung cancers in the Schneeberg-Joachimsthal miners

Zinc-bearing materials containing chlorides and fluorides of alkali metals, such as electric arc furnace dusts, Waelz oxides, galvanising ashes, brass foundry and converter fumes are marginally attractive, both technically and economically, for processing by the Imperial Smelting Process or in a conventional zinc sulphate electrolytic plant. The EZINEX« Process allows the recovery of high purity zinc in cathode form from these materials, together with regeneration of the leach liquor. The process is based on a new electrochemical system which depolarises the anode reaction with reduction of the cell voltage, compared with the traditional sulphate electrolysis method. The electrolyte, based on a chloroammino complex, permits the recovery of other valuable metals present in the zinc bearing materials such as lead, copper and silver. These are recovered as a metallic cement, consequently improving the economics of the process.

"The Minto-Chipman Strip Mining Reclamation Project was initiated to re-vegetate the spoil piles remaining from strip mining operations.All available information was studied by the team responsible, and areas being reclaimed in the U. S. were visited, Methods applicable to the N. B. Project were noted for future use.We have both surface and underground mining operations in New Brunswick, Both deface the natural landscape and reclamation varies in difficulty, Surface operation disturbances are the most difficult to correct.Some of the surface mining is carried out next to two main highways and the results are definite eyesores, With this in mind, it was decided to landscape the spoil ground next to the highways and plant “as is"" the ground remote from the public view.The landscaping entailed various degrees of bulldozing from complete levelling to contouring, smoothing and topping, Bulldozing is, of course, the most expensive part of any reclamation project.There are two phases to the planting program; experimental and operational--experimental both prior and, later, in conjunction with the operational planting.Initially in the experimental project, the pH and composition of the spoil was determined using a grid sampling system. Soil samples were tested in a laboratory at the University of New Brunswick."
