Among the new devices for cheapening the cost of material entering into the manufacture of iron is the mechanical drawing of coke, by which the coke from bee-hive ovens is extracted with a minimum of manual labor. About twenty years ago, an ordinary plate-conveyer was put in use at the plant of bee-hive coke-ovens owned by the firm of Bell Bros. & Co., near Middlesboro, England. This conveyer ran close along the front of the ovens, and carried the coke to the cars. The ovens were drawn by hand, and a very great saving in cost was secured, as one man could draw and clean out twice as many ovens after the conveyer was put in use—he having no forking to do, and the coke being carried away as fast as it was drawn to the mouth of the oven. The next step was further to eliminate hand-labor as far as possible; and Mr. Thomas Smith of the Thorncliffe Iron Works, near Sheffield, patented in 1891 the machine for drawing coke which I here describe. This machine, the outcome of several years of experimenting, has now been in successful use since 1891, and there are between twenty and thirty of them in operation at present, and others building. The machine, as may be seen from Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a wedge-shaped shovel of proper width and thickness, connected with a steel rack of sufficient length to reach the back of the oven. The rack is supported by rolls, and guided by a device operated by a hand-wheel, which directs the shovel in the oven. The rack is driven by a pinion on a vertical shaft carrying a bevel-gear on the upper end. This bevel-gear is driven by another on the engine-shaft. INTRODUCTION The requirement that is placed on owners and operators of underground mines to protect workers against the health hazard of inhaling radioactive materials which are short-lived decay products of 222Rn can be satisfied by applying a considerable variety of what we may call "engineering" solutions as well as a number of "administrative" remedies to the problem. The most obvious of the "engineering" approaches has always been that of forced ventilation, in which relatively clean (i.e., radon-free) air from aboveground is drawn or pushed through the mine workings by a system of fans and ducts. This relatively clean air, in sweeping through the drifts, stopes and haulageways, dilutes the radon and radon-daughter concentrations in the air of the mine, and performs the added beneficial function of removing the daughter-mixture quickly enought to limit grow-in of the longer-lived nuclides in the group that make up the "toxic trio" on which the Working Level (IM) unit is based. Effective as the dilution-ventilation method is for control of WL in most underground mining situations, however, the increasing strictness of control measures that have been imposed on the mining industry over the last two decades have demanded measures of even greater effectiveness. In times of poor markets for yellow-cake and other products of the mines, mine operators are pressed to reduce operating costs, and the installation of additional primary ventilation capacity can be a severe burden on a mine that is already laboring under an unfavorable earning power. When traditional dilution-ventilation systems alone cannot meet the requirement for WI, control, radiation safety engineers and ventilation engineers begin to look at alternatives and auxiliary methods. Since the radon which produces the toxic daughter products originates in the rock of the mine walls, and since, in most United States mines, that rock is a porous sandstone through which air can move under the effect of atmospheric pressure gradients, and through which radon can diffuse relatively freely, one way to help control the growth of WL would be to hinder the escape of radon from that reservior of porous rock. An appealing; method for hindering that natural flux of radon-polluted air from the walls of the mine has long been apparent; namely, to apply a low-permeability coating over the surface of the rock, thus sealing the radon in place and, in theory at least, preventing its escape into the mine air. Our 1970 report to the U.S. Federal Radiation Council on the subject of cost impacts of proposed changes in the occupational standards for exposure of underground uranium miners to airborne radon daughters noted the possibility of using polymeric wall sealants as a means of controlling radon-pollution of mine air. Since that time a number of reports have appeared in the technical literature advocating this technique for restraining the escape of radon from building materials, mill tailings, and other materials containing 226Ra, in addition to the surfaces of underground mine workings. During this period, some controversy has occurred over the question of the probable effectiveness of wall sealants in limiting the escape of radon from the rock. Our 1970 report speculated that flaws (cracks and "pinholes") in the coating might be all but unavoidable in practice, and that even a conservative estimate of the frequency of such flaws would lead to a prediction of ineffectiveness. Hammon et al, in a laboratory evaluation of radon sealants conducted by Lawrence Livermore Laboratory of the University of California in 1975 on behalf of U.S. Bureau of Mines, concluded that a wide variety of polymeric coatings would provide "nearly 100% effectiveness" in restrain¬ing escape of radon from mine wall surfaces if applied in "thicknesses between 5 and 10 mil" (125-250 [y]pm). John Franklin and co-workers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratories in Spokane, Washington, have carried the experiments with polymeric sealants through additional laboratory tests and into actual mine environments, reporting that selected sealants could provide attenuation of radon flux by a factor of four (75-80% reduction). Robert Bates and John Edwards of USBM developed a computer-assisted mathematical/physical model that predicts a relatively small effect of flaws in a low-permeability coating on the radon flux from a sandstone-type matrix. FIELD TEST Since all actual experimental work with wall sealants showed some beneficial effect on radon attenuation (even if not as exciting as the "nearly 100%" predicted by Hammon), USBM was encouraged to extend its evaluation to an actual operating uranium mine, and awarded a contract for that work to Arthur D. Little, Inc. in September 1979. We were fortunate in obtaining the voluntary cooperation of Atlas Minerals Division of Atlas Corp., who operate a mill and several underground mines in and around Moab, Utah. Atlas made available for our use a small T-shaped drift in their Pandora Mine in LaSal, Utah, and provided space for instrumentation and recordkeeping by our field crew in a surface building near the mine entry. Atlas also provided electricity and water to the test site, together with assistance in establishing necessary ventilation, removing rubble from the site, conducting periodic WL surveys and furnishing auxiliary man-power for the heavy hard work of coating the walls with gunite prior to application of the polymeric sealant. The development of the theory of reliability creates more and more possibilities of its application in different domains of technics. The methods evolved to date, both theoretical analysis of the engineering systems and investigations techniques in practice can be put in use a d translated from one science to another one [1,3,7J . It needs to consider the specific of the different sciences. But it is necessary to take account of the specific characteristic of each line of science. The reliability investigations needs, justified in technical and economical viewpoint appear too in mine ventilation technics and systems. The mine ventilation system is a complex of workings and ventilation plants, which serve to supply the networks with a sufficient quantity of fresh air from the atmosphere and then carry off the vitiated air. The condition necessary for a ventilation system to perform definite task is the correctness of all its elements, that is a capability to preserve in a expected range of tolerance, the values of basic parameters. The element of a system which ceases to work correctly is called failed. The basic parameter of all elements of a ventilation system is the characteristic curve, pressure loss - air quantity relation ?p = f(Q) (1) This curve concerning the workings and ventilation stoppings is given by the formula: ?p = R Q2 (2) thus the resistance R (of the workings or stoppings) may be taken as a characteristic parameter. The course of this characteristic f(Q) will be given in a complex form in concern with fans, ejectors, air curtains. The failure of a ventilation plant or working is therefore an event, relying on a change of its characteristic, thus for a definite time the losses of the plant's or working's capability set in for the fulfilment of its function in the ventilation system. The failures are divided in viewpoint of their nature on sudden and progressive. We are in concern with the sudden failures which are characterised by a violent change of the ventilation element parameter for example a fall of roof, or silt up of the working, opening or failure of the ventilation stopping, the stand-off of the fan or ejector etc. We distinguish two kinds of failures on the viewpoint of their action on the air flow: the "opening" failure and "closure" failure. The prevalence of factors, which causes the failures is in connection with the intersection in the mine of roads of haulage, roads of underground transport of materials and lining elements, roads of people motion with airways, as also depends on the rock pressure reaction on the workings lining and plants placed there. Other factors will yet be decisive upon supply decay of fans, ejectors and curtains. The appearance of failure of the ventilation element is therefore of random nature and determines the change of the element, when it is passing from operating state to unoperate. Qualifying the ventilation system element to one of these states is easy, when the characteristic change is clear and occurs suddenly, that was assumed. The investigations conducted by Patrushev and Karnaukh [91 in concern with the ventilation stoppings resistance change in the case of their opening, had shown the possibility of resistance value change in the range of several hundreds higher.

The Evergreen mine, located at Apex, in the northern part of Gilpin county, Colorado, has opened a very peculiar and interesting copper-deposit, in which both bornite and chalcopyrite occur as rock-minerals. The country-rocks are crystalline schists cut by dikes of granu-lite and of pegmatite. At the Evergreen property they have been cut by a dike of a uew kind of eruptive rock, to which I have given the name " Evergreenite." The rock is composed of quartz, alkali feldspars, orthoclase and albite (often interlocked as microperthite), with augite of the ægirine variety and long needles of enstatite and diallage. For reasons stated below, I believe the dike to be of Tertiary age. It is easily traced on the surface of the ground, from a point in the bottom of Pine creek, about a mile below Apex, to the top of Nevada hill, 1,500 ft. beyond and 600 ft. above it. (See Fig. 1.) It varies from 3 to 12 ft. in width, and is bounded on both sides by contact-zones about 60 ft. wide, in which the crystalline schists have been changed into pseudo-quartzites or pseudo-gneisees, according to the injection of an excess of quartz or of feldspars through the special layer of the schists. The most interesting feature is the presence of the pyroxenes, which are always found, though in very variable proportions from place to place, in the layers of these metamorphosed crystalline schists. The dike has torn from its walls a large number of fragments of the wall-rock. It must have been in a viscous state when that happened, because these fragments of the wall-rock do not show any sign of resorption or of assimilation by the magma. In places they are so distinct and so numerous that the rock looks to the naked eye like a pseudo-breccia, of which, never-

This paper has been prepared with the principal objective of recording the results of the Bureau of Mines exploration of five major clay deposits in the Western Region. It is based mainly on data contained in unpublished Bureau of Mines reports. Acknowledgment is made to the Federal Geological Survey for its cooperative work with the Bureau of Mines, to the various State geological and mining departments, and other State and local agencies. Clay Exploration by the Bureau of Mines Much has been written and published on clays and clay deposits relating to their refractory, ceramic, and other qualities but such literature is lacking in analyses of the available alumina content of the clays and provides little indication of their possibilities as a source of alumina. With this new objective in view, a great many of the known clay deposits were reexamined and new ones discovered. The Bureau of Mines made preliminary examination of numerous areas in the western United States. Five of those most favorably indicated were systematically drilled, and in each a large amount of high-alumina clay has been found. These five major projects are Molalla and Hobart Butte, in western Oregon; Cowlitz-Castle Rock, in southwestern Washington; Ione, in California; and the Olson-Troy area in Idaho (Fig. I). Preliminary scout drilling was done in the Stockton deposit at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; the White ware deposit near Lewis-town, Mont.; and 13 areas in the Spokane or eastern Washington region, where the most favorably indicated area, known as the Excelsior, is now being drilled more systematically. Preliminary drilling was undertaken in numerous areas adjacent to the major deposits and others more remote. As a result, large additional clay possibilities were found. The Clay Deposits The clay deposits under consideration are of the sedimentary or transported types, parts of which have been altered further by the agencies of weathering, ground water, or hydrothermal action. There are extensive deposits of residual clays in northern Idaho and in eastern Washington, but they have been found to be low in the available alumina and to contain much free quartz, mica, and unaltered feldspar. To be of value, they must first be subjected to beneficiation to remove these gangue minerals. Imaging tools such as the acoustic and optical televiewer are now being used to collect real time, high resolution, oriented fracture and bedding data. Drill holes 100’s of meters deep can be processed very quickly using automated structure picking software and borehole core samples can be digitally logged instead of using paper and pencil.

"Falconbridge Mine has a history of significant microseismic activity dating back to 1955. Since mid-1981, a microseismic monitoring system has been operating in the area around the No .9 Shaft hoist room located 25 m from the are zone at a depth of 1200m. Several mine wide faults dissect this area and have been shown to be microseismic-active due to mining. The microseismic monitor has been interfaced with a small dedicated personal computer and a communications device to perform routine data evaluation and to produce graphical output. The programs are described and selected result s from the monitoring program are presented.IntroductionFalconbridge Mine is located on the southeast rim of the Sudbury Basin. The nickel-copper sulphide ore zone is essentially a tabular orebody striking approximately east-west and dipping at 80 degrees north near surface and rolling to 75 degrees to 80 degree s south by the 1000 level. (Mine level number s represent the approximate depth in feet below ground surface .) This dip is maintained down to the 6000 level. The north wall is comprised of jointed norite and a faulted contact up to 1 m thick exists between the ore zone and the norite. The south wall rock is a greenstone with highly siliceous lenses and often has a faulted contact with the ore zone. No less than five mine wide faults exist, as shown in Fig. I.Mining ha s been carried out from virtually the bedrock contact to depths of 1830 m although the majority of current activity is between 900 and 1500 m below surface. A winze provides access below the 4025 level and the cage hoist room is located on the 3850 level in the north wall 25 m from the contact. Because of concern for the stability of this hoist room, there has been no mining activity within 60 m of the hoist room and by 1980 this block of ore was one of the major blocks of high-grade ore remaining in the mine . Mining of this block was originally scheduled for very late in the decade.Prior to a six-month shutdown in 1982, this mine produced approximately 450,000 tonnes of ore annually, mainly by cut and- fill techniques. Following the shutdown, annual production has been reduced to approximately 200,000 tonnes and production is now mainly by undercut and fill techniques .Mining-induced seismicity has occurred at Falconbridge Mine since at least 1955 and reviews of the microseismic problems for the periods from 1965 - 1970 and from 1971 to 1979 were made by Singh (1971) and Vongpaisal et al. (1980), respectively. The need for instrumentation was addressed by these authors. Following several large events during the spring of 1980, a decision was made to investigate existing microseismic monitors and to apply micro seismic monitoring techniques in Falconbridge Mine. Application of microseismic monitoring to Falconbridge Mine was to concentrate on the No . 9 Shaft hoist room area of the mine, particularly around the 4025 level where a large mechanized cut-and- fill stope was approaching this level. By mid - 1981, the microseismic monitor was fully installed and with in a year , a short-period seismograph and a personal computer had been added to the system."

Australia is the Western world's largest producer of alumina, supplying one third of total needs. Western Australia's South-West has the greatest concentration of alumina production in the world, with a current annual production rate in the region of 6.8 million tonnes per annum, over 20 per cent of the total supplied to market economies. The value of this production in 1989-90 was 2.34 billion dollars, a very significant contribution to the economy of the State (1). This is despite the fact that the bauxite from the Darling Range is the lowest grade that has ever been commercially exploited, and despite the geographical isolation of the region. It is therefore of great importance to the National and State economies that this industry retain its competitive edge, particularly in the current times of economic downturn. One essential ingredient of this competetiveness is technology and innovation, which can be assured by the committment of the industry to an active program of Research and Development, with support from the public sector as Appropriate.

The literature of paper technology contains a number of articles having reference to developments in the field of coating and filler clays for use in paper manufacture. Much of this information has not been included in mining publications and has therefore not been readily available to all in the mineral industry. Recent developments in this field, including spray drying of clays, are presented here. U. S. Bureau of Mines figures for 1952 indicate that the paper industry consumes more than 50 pct of all kaolin produced and sold in the U. S. As most of the kaolin used by the industry comes from Georgia producers, the fraction of their output destined for paper use is thus appreciably higher than 50 pct. Small wonder that the kaolin industry, especially in Georgia, is highly sensitive to the quality requirements of paper mills and must respond promptly to technological developments in paper manufacturing.

THE CLOSING years of the nineteenth century witnessed a rapid expansion in Phelps Dodge activities in Arizona and other parts of the Southwest and a corresponding decline in its exporting and importing interests in New York. Before the close of another decade, this process had gone so far that the company was committed lock, stock, and barrel to its western undertakings. By 1910 the evolution that began with the tentative investments at Bisbee and Morenci was complete. An enormous increase in the domestic production of iron and copper, which made it increasingly difficult to find markets for imported cargoes of those metals from English mills, accounted in part for this radical shift in Phelps Dodge activities and interests. In the case of tin plate, the change was even more spectacular. In 1890 a seventh of the world's supply of pig tin passed through the hands of Phelps Dodge agents. In 1906, thanks chiefly to the McKinley Tariff of 1890 which imposed a duty of over two cents a pound on tin plate imported into the United States, the company received its last shipment of tin from England, and thus ended a form of

MucH has been written upon the precipitation of metals from cyanide Solution by zinc. We often read of the many factors that influence precipitation, such as zinc surface, purity of zinc, percentage of lead, temperature of solutions, strength of solutions in cyanide or alkali, etc. -Little do, we hear, however, of the part that oxygen plays in precipitation. Caldecottl says: "As the dissolving of gold is essentially an oxidation process, so its precipitation is one of reduction." All who have studied or worked with cyanide solutions will agree that Caldecott's statement is true.' . In the cyanide work in the mills of the Portland Gold Mining Co., we have always found oxygen to be the greatest enemy to precipitation. Oxygen Antagonistic to Good Precipitation A few years ago, while making some experiments on the effect of pressure upon the dissolving rate of gold from our ores, to prove a point, I made some bottle tests under vacuum. The results were surprising, and showed that under vacuum practically no gold dissolved, which confirmed my belief that Elsner's equation was true and also led me to investigate the amount of dissolved air carried by solutions at atmospheric pressure. The experiment consisted in partly filling an acid-bottle with mill-solution and connecting it by a rubber hose to a vacuum pump. When the vacuum was suddenly applied, a cloud composed of thousands of small air bubbles rose out of the solution, showing qualitatvcily' the amount of dissolved air that was contained in the solution, and also proving that the relief of atmospheric pressure on the solution permitted this dissolved air to escape. In studying literature on the subject, we find Henry's law—"The amount of gas dissolved by a liquid is proportional to the pressure to which the gas is subjected."

The Bureau of Mines has designed and built a controlled-environment test chamber specifically for instrument evaluation in simulated work atmospheres. The atmosphere inside the 300-liter stainless steel chamber can be controlled at any selected temperature and relative humidity in the range of 2° to 93° C and 20 to 95 percent, respectively. Instruments placed inside the test chamber are subjected to an atmosphere at a preset temperature and humidity containing various concentrations of toxic gases such as CO, C02, NO, NO2, S02, and H2S. Toxic gas losses resulting from wall reactions, monitoring instruments, and instruments under evaluation are compensated by the use of a dynamic gas blending system.

Mechanical cleaning of coal was porforined in a few small plants in New South Wales from 1577 brit the first large coal washeries were built by Broken Hill Wbprietary Company Limited and Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Limited in the late 1940's. Mechanization of colleries in the 1950bs was abcomp" anied by construction of many coal washing plants and in the 1960's the growth of the coal export trade gave further impetus to the coal preparation industry. Design of coal preparation plants in Australia is modelled on practice overseas. Planning of a new plant in- volves investigation of many factors both technical and economic and the preparation of a specification by the operator for the designer's guidance. A wide range of preparation processes and equipment is on offer, but the nature of the coal to be treated and the separating efficiency desired usually dictate process selection. Simple or moderately difficult separation can be achieved with jigs, shaking tables or water washing cyclones. Coal which is difficult to treat or which has to be cut at a specific gravity lower than 1.5 is normally washed in a heavy medium process. In large plants it is usual to separate the coal into large, small and fine fractions and concentrate each fraction in a circuit designed to suit the grain size handled.

Thomas W. Mitcham (Strategic Minerals, Inc., Grand Junction, Colo.)—The authors have presented a significant contribution to the field of mining geology. The article is graphic, remarkably concise, and crisply original. The presentation is made on only three pages with two maps, but their Silver Bell story is entirely adequate in background, development, and conclusion. Most of their colleagues would agree that this paper reflects the high quality of the work which these unusually capable men have done in the Silver Bell area over the past few years. The Silver Bell area is one of complex tectonic structure, and time and spatial relationships are by no means apparent. Actually, most of the observations and interpretations in this paper are new to published geologic literature on the Silver Bell area. I am in agreement with these interpretations with two possible exceptions, which are discussed below. One might well define the three roughly parallel west-northwest faults, shown on the insert of Fig. 2, as the major structural elements of the area. North to south, I propose that these be named the Ragged Mountain fault, the Silver Bell fault zone, and the Waterman thrust, after the mountain ranges which are the results of these major structures. While I would agree with the authors that the northern two of these major structures are high-angle faults of the Laramide revolution, my impression is that the southern structure is a low-angle thrust of approximately Miocene age. In support of this opinion, I submit the following observations: 1) irregularity of the fault in strike; 2) scarcity of Laramide intrusives and alteration of sediments along the fault; 3) present high re- lief of the Waterman Range which indicates youth or certainly rejuvenation; and 4) existence of a series of parallel structures farther to the south which results in an outcrop pattern suggesting imbricate thrusting. The authors have stated that Laramide igneous activity began with the intrusion of alaskite. Some dacite flows appear to be conformable with Cretaceous beds, and thus my impression was that alaskite followed the intrusion and extrusion of dacite. I would be interested to learn of evidence in support of the reverse relationship suggested by the authors. Kenyon Richard and J. H. Courtright (authors' reply)—The authors appreciate Mr. Mitcham's attention to this paper. The names he proposed for the major faults seem appropriate. His suggestion that the Waterman fault is a thrust may be correct because he did more work in that particular area than the authors. However, it is believed that no direct evidence of a low-angle thrust relationship has been recognized, and the authors consider that indirect evidence favors a high-angle fault interpretation. The pre-dacite flow age of the alaskite is definitely established, the authors believe, by the fact that the flows rest on an erosion surface which was carved in the dacite porphyry, an intrusive clearly younger than the alaskite, as evidenced by inclusions of alaskite occurring in dacite porphyry. No direct evidence of Cretaceous sediment-flow rock relationships was found at Silver Bell, but in the nearby Tucson mountains dacite agglomerates, megascopically similar to those at Silver Bell, overlie a basal conglomerate which in turn rests on the truncated edges of steep-dipping Cretaceous arkosic beds.

Dr. F. W. C. Schniewind, New York, N. Y.:—Mr. Vogel speaks of briquetting the flue-dust by means of lime. I learned recently in Europe of a process employed with considerable success at one of the blast-furnaces, where blast-furnace cinder is used with lime. The lime and cinder are mixed with the flue-dust, and exposed to superheated steam, which converts the blast-furnace cinder into cement. Briquettes are then formed in the usual way. Mr. Vogel :—The process referred to is the " Scoria process," which has not been in use for some time past. For that reason, I did not mention it. Prof. Arthur L. Walker, New York, N. Y.:—I would ask the commercial name for magnesium chloride, and where it can be obtained ? Mr. VoGel :—I mentioned magnesium chloride, because it has been used abroad to a large extent. In Germany it is obtained as a by-product in the manufacture of potash-salts; in the United States we have been using chloride of lime, which is cheaper. Otto Sussman, New York, N. Y.:—What is the cost of this process ? Mr. Vogel :—The cost is exceedingly low. DESPITE the very small number of engineers who can get away from their tasks to New York, a point so far from the Mid-Continent and Cali-fornia oil fields, where the real important, engineering progress in the industry is being made, the attendance was remarkably good, and it was generally remarked that all the sessions were "snappy," and there was no drag. This was largely because, under instructions from the chairman, very few papers were permitted to be read, and the "high lights" of each paper were pre-sented orally as an introduction to the large and varied discussions, many of which were prepared in advance. The round table discussion on petroleum engineering research problems, conducted by W. E. Wrather, proved a greater success than was anticipated, considering the difficulty in getting many of the men to discuss such problems. There has been no crystallization of opinion heretofore of what are important engineering research problems, as distinguished from pure science problems, and a digest of the discussion will be made available so as to present the results obtained. It is hoped that further round table discussions, as well as committee work, in the meantime summarizing problems appear-ing in papers published the last two to three years, will enable the oil industry to determine intelligently which of the problems are most important for immediate attack. The roundtable discussion on petroleum engineering educational problems, conducted by H. C. George of the University of Oklahoma, was equally fruitful, and since managers of companies, consulting engineers, and pro-fessors cooperated in these sessions, a cross-section of their opinions on improving the curricula for training the large number of petroleum engineers, which the industry can absorb in-the next few years, was obtained.

Within the EU-research project "Blasting Control", jointly operated with partners from France, Italy and Greece, between 1992 and 1995, the Department of Mining Engineering of the Montanuniversity Leoben, Austria took over the task to develop a diagnosis system applicable in underground drifting, in order to identify possible reasons for blast failures or poor blast performance. For that purpose 120 m of 12 m2 test galleries were excavated at two different mine sites. For every blast performed the collar and bottom position of every hole drilled, the charged hole length and the drift and face profile of the round blasted were monitored. These 'geometrical" data were put directly from the measuring devices into SURPAC, the mine planning software chosen for data analysis. Based on the data computed, 3D plots comparing actual and planned data were made visible on the screen or as hard copies. Experience from the introduction of this system into a mining operation showed, that the system developed contributes to an improved understanding of the reasons for blast failures and forms the basis for an improved blast design. The soft- ware package SURPAC was also used to train the miners directly at the mine site in order to improve the quality of their work.
