Rotary kilns have been in service in the gold industry to regenerate carbon for 65 years. At the time oxide ores with gold head grades of 8 to 10 g/t were being treated. Carbon could be regenerated adequately at 650°C and solution losses were less than 1%. Forty years ago, research indicated that heavily fouled carbon from flotation circuits had to be held at 750 to 850°C for ten to twenty minutes for full reactivation (Avraamides and La Brooy, 1987), gold head grades were typically 5 g/t and solution losses typically 0.02 ppm – still less than 1%. In 2017 it was determined (Claflin et al., 2017) that a residence time of less than 1 minute at 750°C can be adequate to reactivate carbon fouled with organics sufficiently to achieve 0.005 ppm solution losses in a flotation tailings leach plant.With the potential for discovery head grades to drop below 0.6 g/t, solution losses of 0.02 ppm represent over 3% loss. Tight operation of the whole carbon circuit is required to keep gold solution losses below 1% going forward.There are alternatives to a rotary carbon kiln, e.g. vertical kilns of which the Minfurn, Rintoul and Combustion Air kilns are examples. The alternative kilns can be heated using electrical heating elements, induction, and microwave. These kilns can operate successfully under the right conditions, however, they are almost exclusively for small carbon throughputs and are not suitable for the large carbon advance rates that are required to process low head grade ore deposits. Large throughput carbon kilns are are almost exclusively fossil fuel fired rotary kilns and the subject of this paper. In the view of the principal author, a fossil fuel fired vertical carbon kiln is preferred to a rotary kiln, however, it is not currently used in the industry.Thermal regeneration of activated carbon has a major impact on gold recovery in the carbon circuit. The carbon kiln and associated equipment constitute 3 to 5% of the capital cost for an oxide processing plant and up to 10% of the capital cost if flotation tails are leached. Despite the capital cost and impact on recovery, the carbon kiln is often poorly selected, operated and maintained.Six years ago Ausenco embarked on the Carbon Kiln Initiative to reduce solution gold losses. This body of knowledge has been published in a series of papers culminating in this paper on how to:1. Select a kiln appropriate for the flowsheet;2. The pressure oxidation of molybdenite concentrates in acidic and alkaline media has been studied. The conditions of the selective oxidation of copper and iron sulphide minerals with a quantitative copper leaching by ferrous-ferric-sulphate solution have been found and explained from the point of view of electrochemical kinetics. The partly oxidised residue consisting of molybdenite and (hydro-) oxide of iron (III) was then decomposed by oxygen in alkaline media. Effects of the main parameters, such us oxygen pressure, leaching temperature, solid-liquid phase ratio, autoclave stirring speed as well as lixiviants nature on the molybdenite oxidation rate have been established.

The Nation's capital has one over- riding minerals-metals question: How long will prices and wages continue to move upward at the inexorable pace of the last year? Is the wage pattern to settle this year around 10%? The big industrial unions are coming into line, some of them later this year. Steel is standing in the wings for next year. Copper, steel, nickel and most other industrial metals have taken big hikes in their stride. Aluminum, which is making inroads into areas of industrial use formerly sacred to copper and some other metals, seems to be fighting to hold down its prices to attract customers from the higher-priced metals.

An evaluation was performed on a district recirculation system at a trona mine in Granger, WY. A 1.52 m-diam (5 ft-diam), 37.3-kW (50-hp) vane axial fan was installed in a crosscut between the intake and return airways and recirculated about 31.4 m3/s (66,578 cfm) of air back into the intake. This amounted to a recirculation factor of about 20% of the return air. This air was part of the primary ventilation to three different continuous miner sections at operating distances of between 610 m (2000 ft) and 1829,m (6000 ft) from the recirculation fan. The mine environment was constantly monitored for respirable dust, methane and carbon monoxide in the operating sections and in the main intake and return entries. In addition, air samples were taken with and without the recirculation system during the evaluation and analyzed using gas chromatography. The results of this study showed only small increases in dust, while all other mine contaminants remained at such low levels that it was impossible to determine any relative changes from the recirculation system. Because of this, a brief SF6 tracer gas analysis study was subsequently performed to more precisely determine an increase in a mine contaminant with the recirculation system.

This article examines health and safety trends during the past 10 years at Appalachian surface and underground bituminous coal mines. Data for Appalachia include Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia and eastern Kentucky. These states account for more than 90% of the coal production in the Appalachian region. (Production, accidents and fatalities in Ohio, Maryland, Tennessee and Alabama are not included in computing Appalachian trends.) Trends for Appalachian underground mines are differentiated by size and mining method into three categories: - Small mines with fewer than 50 employees. - Large nonlongwall mines with 50 or more employees. - Longwall mines (mines with at least one longwall production face).

"Methods and costs of rock-dusting bituminous coal mines have been discussed in various publications by the United States Bureau of Mines and others.3 This paper discusses the present methods and cost of dusting at the Swastika mine of the St. Louis, Rocky Mountain and Pacific Co., Raton, N. M.In the Swastika mine the recommendations of the United States Bureau of Mines with regard to rock-dusting are followed at least as well as in any mine in the States of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. This mine is located at Swastika, N. M., approximately 4 miles west of the town of Raton and is in the Raton coal seam. The mine is rated as gassy and produces approximately 1,000 tons of coal per day.A mining system known as the ""room-and-pillar with cut-offs"" is used which results in recovery of nearly 100 per cent of the coal. The mine employs approximately 250 men.Ventilation is maintained by a Sirocco fan so arranged that the air current may be reversed and exhausting approximately 130,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3 inches water gauge. This fan is supplemented by two auxiliary fans for emergency use. Three main entries penetrate the hill in a straight line for approximately 8,000 feet. The haulage is through the center entry, which is also used as the intake in conjunction with a two-compartment concrete-lined shaft located at the end of the entries. The main return for 3,000 feet inby the fan is 12 feet wide and 7 feet high. For this distance the ribs have been reinforced by a wall made of coke-breeze blocks plastered over with cement. Solid concrete blocks are used for the top row of blocks of the wall. Steel 10-inch I-beams spaced 40 inches apart center to center are supported on these solid blocks and thus support the roof. The next 1,000 feet inby has the same area, but the cement blocks extend to the roof, as no crosspieces are needed. The airways are kept clean and well rock-dusted.A rather unique system is used to handle gas feeders along the intake and haulage entries. There these feeders occur in the roof or where gas is apt to collect in high points along the haulage, tin funnels as large as 3 feet in diameter are placed near the roof. From these a 2-inch or other suitable-sized pipe is run into the return through the wall of the nearest break-through. A valve on this pipe line controls the amount of air pulled. These devices keep the high places clear of any gas, even when strong feeders are encountered.Fifteen-ton electric trolley locomotives are used on the main haulage and approximately 30 roller-bearing oars, each having a capacity of approximately 3,000 pounds of coal, compose a trip. All loaded tripe carry steel drags on the last car, and automatic derails are located at advantageous points throughout the mine.All loaded trips are thoroughly sprinkled on the sectional partings and at the main parting. The track is sprinkled every idle day, or if needed, every day; from a large tank mounted on a truck hauled by a motor. Neither nozzle nor spray is used, as these were unsatisfactory. The water leaves the tank. through a 11/2-inch valve and is permitted to flow on the road through a horizontal 11/2-inch T. Water is obtained from filling stations located throughout the mine. It is stated by the officials that the use of this method of sprinkling permits the entire haulage roadbed to be wetted down in two hours."

In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of machine driven soft ground tunnelling projects. This increase is largely due to the technological development of slurry and EPB Shield systems. A new generation of soft ground tunnelling machines, markedly different from those of five years ago, now overcomes ground conditions that until now were too costly and impractical to undertake. The paper reviews the latest soft ground tunnelling machine developments in material transport, guidance and control, seismic surveying, soil conditioning, settlement control, cutting tool applications and variable mode operating systems. Specific projects where this technology has been applied will be highlighted.

By far the greater number of the members of this Institute are men who are engaged in the strenuous work of the technical part of their profession, and find little time for the abstract scientific work which is less distinctly practical and pecuniarily remunerative. There is, however, a small but increasingly nu, merous class whose members devote themselves to broad geological problems which underlie the systematic development, and whose work, theoretically, ought to precede and form a basis for that of their more practical brethren. These are the so-called mining or economic geologists, who are, for the most part, connected with State or National geological surveys. Prom the character of their work, the life of these men necessarily follows rather different lines from that of most of their colleagues, and is not generally familiar to them. It seems admissible, therefore, that to the life of a prominent member of this class, who died during the past year, having literally sac-rified his life to his work, a more extended notice should be given than the relatively small number of his contributions to the Transactions night seem to justify. George Homans Eldridge, son of Ellery and Sarah (Mathews) Eldridge, was born on Cape Cod at Yarmouth, Mass.; Christmas day, 1854. His boyhood education in the public school at Yarmouth was followed by a six years' course in the Public Latin School at Boston, from which he entered Harvard University in 1872, being graduated with the highest rank in his class in the natural sciences in 1876. During his college course he spent the summers of 1875-6 at Cumberland Gap, Ky.,as volunteer aid to Prof. N. S. Shaler, who was then in charge of the State Geological Survey of Kentucky. During the driving of the main haulage level at the Copper Mountain mines of the Canada Copper Corpn., Ltd., near Princeton, B. C., some very rapid driving was done, though no claim for a world's record is made. Conditions, however, were unfavorable for economical operations. The cost of power was high, for the fuel was of poor grade; besides, during the time the work was in progress, very little other power was needed so that most of the power cost was charged against the footage. The transmission line consisted of No. 4 galvanized iron wire with the result that the line lass was considerable. The voltage transmitted was about 30,000. The plant was operated under a lease, which was due to expire about the same time this work was supposed to be completed; an extension was refused, therefore speed was most important. The plans called for a straight adit 2900 ft. (884 m.) in length. At a point 2800 ft. (853 m.) from the portal, two raises were to be put up to the next nearest workings, a difference in elevation of about 800 ft. (243 m.). One of these was to be a two-compartment hoistway and the other a zigzag ore pass, or muck run. A location for these raises had been determined by a number of diamond-drill holes, but the material to be penetrated by the adit was not known. In 1989 Newmont Gold company initiated a project to develop a treatment process for higher grade refractory gold ores to be mined from deposits along the Carlin Trend in Nevada. Extensive laboratory and pilot testing have identified a unique whole ore roasting process for oxidizing these ores prior to gold recovery by conventional cyanidation techniques. Subsequent detailed engineering studies by Fluor Daniel evaluated three different dry grinding flowsheets for feed preparation to this roasting circuit. The selected flowsheet will incorporate a two compartment ball mill with an attached drying chamber that is driven by a 11.2 MW (15,000 hp) wrap-around motor.

On the basis of liquidus measurements in the system COO-Mg0-Al2O3-Sio, and previously published data, diagrams have been constructed at 5 pct Al2O3, intervals from 5 to 35 pct Al2O3,. Liquidus temperatures and primary phase fields are shown. The optimum composition of a blast furnace slag for a given alumina content is indicated. At the optimum point, ordinary slags will be entirely liquid and will have maximum desulphurization potential and minimum viscosity. The relation of optimum composition of slags to the "plateau region" of the liquidus surface, and the application of these data on synthetic quaternary slags to actual slag compositions are discussed. Index of refraction of glasses is given as well as composition, temperature, and phase data for each mixture. THE usual blast furnace slag, as a first approximation, can be considered a mixture of the four oxides, CaO, MgO, Also,, and SiO,. Systematic, extensive data for the quaternary system, CaO-MgO-A1,0,-SiO, is therefore required for the understanding of the properties of such a slag as a function of composition and temperature. With sufficient data, it should be possible to fix unequivocably the relative amounts of lime, magnesia, and silica required for a given alumina content to result in a slag composition having optimum properties. Other constituents, such as FeO, MnO, Ti02, and S, have an effect on the properties of a slag, but as long as they are present in small and approximately constant amounts they produce only a second-order effect superimposed upon the major changes in properties of slags determined by the relative amounts of the four major components. Viscosity and desulphurization data have been reported for mixtures approaching blast furnace slags in composition, but systematic liquidus data have not been obtained. Inasmuch as a slag must be all liquid in order to be most effective as well as practicable, clearly the temperature above which a mixture is all liquid (liquidus temperature) is a type of data needed. Such data have been obtained through the study of 446 compositions and are pre- sented in this paper along with a discussion of their bearing on the optimum composition of blast furnace slags. For an orderly presentation of the data, the quaternary system is viewed as a tetrahedron with one component at each apex. Fig. 1 shows a tetrahedron representing the system Ca0-Mg0-A1,0,-Si0,. The building of reverberatory furnaces (Fortschaufelungsofen) where ordinary brick, fire-brick and iron are comparatively cheap, is quite a different matter from the building of such furnaces in isolated camps, where proper material is only to be obtained at high cost and with long delays. Time is always a large factor in metallurgical operations, and the metallurgist may find himself in a position where it becomes necessary to erect apparatus and have it running in less time than it would take to obtain material from outside. It is here that he must make use of makeshifts. In Mexico, one of the most important of these is the alluseful adobe. Employed from prehistoric times, it still has its sphere of application in a surprisingly large number of instances requiring an article that can be quickly and cheaply produced. It is quite possible to erect serviceable reverberatory furnaces with no other materials than adobes, stone and wood. The old Mexican smelting shaft-furnace was an example of what can be done with adobes, and the large number of ruins of this class of furnace scattered through the mining districts of Mexico are silent testimony to the genius of a people who demonstrated their capability of adapting material at hand to their needs. The present paper will describe briefly the construction of an adobe reverberatory furnace which is giving good results, can be quickly erected at a low cost, and, if properly built and handled, will last a long time. The material being simply sun-dried, it naturally follows that the construction must be quite heavy. The adobes should be evenly made, with just sufficient straw to hold them together, and not too large in size (9 in. wide, 18 in. long and 4 in. thick

"Fire Refined Copper (EI Teniente Three Stars) has been produced at Caletones Smelter of Codelco Chile since almost the beginning of its operations.Due to changing features of the copper market, together with the targets on technical efficiency and productivity, it has become more and more relevant for copper industry to reach both, good final product quality and a proper environmental control.At present, copper refining process at Caletones Smelter takes place in two cylindrical tilting furnaces, where solid fluxes are injected through horizontal tuyeres into the molten bath. (Fig. N2 1)Solid reagents are pneumatically conveyed and injected into the liquid copper bath attaining excellent solid - liquid contact, so the impurities removal efficiencies are found to be high. Same injection tuyeres are used to introduce both oxidising agent (normal air) and reducing agent (reformed gas) into the molten bath. Air or nitrogen is used as conveying gas for solid reagents, depending on the process stage.This pap~r gives a fundamental description of the process and industrial results related to the injection of blend of sodium and calcium carbonates to remove arsenic and antimony, silica and granulated reverberatory slag to remove lead and a mixture of calcium carbonate and mineral coal to reduce the selenium content of the fire refined copper."

In engineering analyses, rock is frequently treated as a homogeneous, isotropic, and linearly elastic medium. However, rock material exhibits, in most cases, physical nonlinearity, time-dependency, and anisotropy. In some instances, anelasticity due to nonmechanical effects, such as density and temperature changes, must also be taken into account. The influence of these different anomalies in the physical behavior of a rock material is often neglected. An estimate of the discrepancies which are introduced when classical theory of elasticity is used is consequently required. The easiest theoretical path by which these discrepancies can be analyzed is to vary the constitutive equations of the rock material. The constitutive equations, representing various physical experiences with different types of media, define a class of ideal substances. Assuming different constitutive equations for the description of the rock physical behavior, one can establish a sensitivity analysis to determine how much information is contained in elastic theory for reliable design purposes. The method may be applied also using numerical techniques (e.g., finite element or finite differences) which, because of the nature of the formulation, require one to assume in each case the rock constitutive equations. Theoretical and experimental work is needed to be able to perform such analyses with confidence. Adequate and practical procedures for the determination of the material functions which enter the various constitutive equations must be established. This paper presents such an attempt with respect to the simulation of some behavior patterns of rock material. It is felt worthwhile to stimulate activity in this field and it is hoped to contribute to this objective.

Spencer Gulf takes off from the Great Australian Bight cutting a 200 mile deep wedge of water into the South Australia coastline. A pale winter sun shines yellowly on the choppy surface of this body of water which is progressively more salty as it approaches Port Augusta at the head of the Gulf. Once Port Augusta thrived as a grain port and the speedy clipper ships began or ended their legendary races there. On the eastern shores of Spencer Gulf, farm land spreads away from the water's edge. The western side of the gulf meets marginal grazing land of acacia tree and salt bush. Part way down the gulf, there are two industrial towns facing each other from opposite shores; Port Pirie on the east and Whyalla on the west. These towns are like half brothers, the common parent being the founders of Broken Hill Pty. Ltd., (BHP) who began lead smelting at Port Pirie and discovered iron ore near Whyalla needed for the lead smelting process. The iron deposits later became the inspiration for BHP's iron and steel business.

As a result of information that the Navy Department was questioning the advisability of raising the maximum allowable exposure temperature for zinc-coated steel parts from 500 to 750 F., it was decided to make a series of high temperature tension tests on several types of uncoated and zinc-coated steels. The objective was to determine at what temperature intergranular penetration of galvanized steel by zinc might take place under conditions of rapidly applied stress and temperature. Tests were conducted in the range from room temperature to 1400 F. In this range, low-carbon and high-carbon steels did not suffer any adverse effects due to zinc coatings. In fact, at 1400 F. the zinc coatings appeared to have a beneficial effect. In stainless steel, the coating had no effect up to 1000 F. Above this temperature, the zinc coating appeared to cause a marked loss in ductility and a less pronounced loss in strength. There was no visible evidence of zinc penetration of the stainless steel structure, but it was assumed that this was the cause of the adverse effect.
