While a sizable amount of data exist as to the activity and distribution of minor elements between matte and metal, there has been no unifying theory presented delineating the form of dissolution of these elements in molten sulfides. In order to alleviate that deficiency the literature concerning the behavior of As, Sb, Bi and Pb in mattes is reviewed. Models present in the literature, regarding the thermochemical behavior of minor elements, are tested, and new models are presented and evaluated using thermodynamic theory. The results of those analyses are used to predict optimum conditions for the volatilization of minor elements. The dearth of data on the behavior of minor elements in nickel mattes requires that this review focus on copper- iron mattes. An effort is made, however, to utilize basic knowledge regarding nickel sulfides and the interaction of nickel with the minor elements to predict the behavior of those elements in nickel-copper and nickel-iron mattes.

The ores now milled at the Midvale concentrator of the United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. come mostly from the company's mine in the Bingham district, about 18 miles west of Midvale. Custom ores from this same district and from other western mining districts are also milled at times. The Bingham ores consist of galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite in a gangue of quartz, quartzite, limestone, and porphyry. The percentage of chalcopyrite is small, usually about 0.5 per cent., while the galena, pyrite, and sphalerite combined constitute about 60 per cent, of the total ore. These three minerals vary considerably in amount and, at times, all three are somewhat oxidized. The ores also contain gold and silver, the former being mostly in the pyrite while the latter is generally with the galena. The crystallization of the economic minerals varies from fairly coarse to extremely fine. The ores are carried to Midvale by the Bingham & Garfield and the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroads or by the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad, in 50-ton, steel, full dump cars. The milling problem is to recover the silver-bearing galena, the gold-bearing pyrite, and the chalcopyrite in a product suitable for the lead smelter and containing the least possible amount of gangue and sphalerite and then recover the sphalerite in a product suitable for a zinc smelter. The minerals are recovered partly by water concentration and partly by water concentration combined with electrostatic treatment. Gravity Concentrator The gravity concentrator has a capacity of about 465 tons in 24 hr. The mill buildings are of wood. The mill was built in 1905 to handle approximately 90 tons in 24 hr.; since that time several additions have been built and various changes have been made in the flow sheet. The last extension, which raised the capacity of the mill to its present level, was built in 1915. The additions to the mill building have not kept pace with

Many western ores containing ;old, silver, and copper can be mined and concentrated at a profit only when the recovery of those metals is high and treatment costs are low. Usually, ores containing easily dissolved copper minerals, or copper minerals that become soluble to some extent through oxidation during treatment, present a real problem in cyanidation. Copper cyanide compounds are formed that tend to 'precipitate and that cannot yield regenerated cyanide and metallic copper on contact with zinc. This results not only in some loss of copper through solution in cyanide, but in excessive consumption of cyanide above the amount required for the extraction of Gold and silver. Any moans, therefore, of minimizing the: loss of cyanide while at the same time effecting high recoveries of the several values contained in the ore is of wide interest. A sample of typical low-grade ore of gold, silver, and copper, containing copper-sulfide minerals, was obtained from the MacLaren Gold Mines Co., Cooke, Park County, Mont., for laboratory investigation by flotation and cyanidation.

For many years the problem of increasing ultimate recovery of oil from a reservoir has been a subject of interest to the oil industry. At present, a standard secondary recovery technique is to flood the reservoir with water once natural forces of the system are depleted. The permeability characteristics of the rock, together with interfacial forces which exist between the two fluids and the porous material. allow only part of the oil in the rock formation to be recovered by the water-flooding process. Laboratory experiments have shown that when detergents are added to the flooding water, the flow properties of oil in a porous rock arc improved. This improvement results in greater oil recovery. Even though higher recoveries are obtained using detergents, the extra cost associated with the method may make it economically unsatisfactory. To establish economic feasibility requires experimental laboratory measurement of fluid and rock properties together with a calculational procedure to predict field results. Pilot tests in the field may also be required. This paper presents a mathematical procedure for predicting detergent flood behavior. A number of reasonable simplifying assumptions are made to obtain a tractable system of equations. The resulting method may be regarded as a generalization of Buckley-Lev-crett' theory to solve simultaneously for water saturation and detergent concentration profiles. Consequently this type of calculation can be used in much the same manner as Buckley-Leverett theory is used to evaluate a water flood. The mathematical method employed is the so-called method of characteristics for solving hyperbolic partial differential equations. This application of the method is instructive because several other problems in reservoir analysis may be analyzed in a similar manner. FLUID FLOW EQUATIONS The flow behavior of oil and water without detergent through porous reservoir rock is usually expressed by Darcy's law and a continuity equation for each phase. Fluid viscosity is denoted by 11, p is the density, 4 is porosity, and I the time. The subscripts w and o refer to water and oil. The capillary forces in the system lead to a difference in pressure between phases. This may be expressed by the relation: Pm -P0 =Pc(S).........(5) The capillary pressure? P,, is determined experimentally as a function of saturation. DETERGENT BALANCE EQUATION Addition of detergent to the water phase affects the flow properties of the system. Capillary pressure and relative permeability become functions of detergent concentration, c, as well as fluid saturation. That is: P--P (S,c) and k,,,.- - -- k,,,. At low oil saturation values, the presence of detergent reduces capillary pressure and reduces the relative permeability ratio. Detergents are surface-active and adsorb on rock surfaces. The quantity adsorbed, a, will depend on the concentration c of detergent solution and may also depend on the saturation; thus, a = a(S,c). In this analysis we have assumed that the detergents used are water soluble but not oil soluble, and their movement is therefore restricted to the water phase. The dispersion of detergent in water is neglected by comparison with transfer by flow within the system. Detergent movement is determined by the water flux and adsorption: ? cv m = -F ?/?t (cs + a) We will assume that the quantity of detergent in solution is too small to significantly change water density or viscosity. In spite of many investigations of the occlusion of hydrogen in iron, the nature of the process and the reasons for the accompanying effects upon the metal are still open questions. This is in large part due to three causes: (1) the difficulty of obtaining iron of adequate purity as starting material; (2) the occurrence of allotropic transformations, which complicate the effects; and (3) the fact that the body-centered cubic modification does not lend itself readily to crystallographic investigation. The present paper attempts a critical review and correlation of the somewhat scattered and disconnected existing observations, and an experimental determination of the extent to which the conclusions that appear to follow from these are applicable to iron of really high purity, studied under well-defined conditions. Review Although only a comparatively few investigations have so far been made on the pure system iron-hydrogen, there is a much larger volume of literature which throws some light on the problem but falls short of a place in the systematic investigations, either because no attempt was made to measure equilibrium conditions or because the metal used was not iron or the gas not pure hydrogen. Such results have been variously dismissed in the past as of no importance, or as too complicated to try to explain; or they have been explained in terms of any of a dozen or more pictures, each of which is contradicted by data from other sources. The present importance of these data thus arises from their very mass and diversity, which present a picture of occlusion as a phenomenon whose variability cannot be ignored. We have attempted to organize the literature into groups comprising similar experiments or data leading to similar conclusions, thus of necessity sacrificing accuracy of historical order. The U.S. cement industry, including Puerto Rico, again set a record in terms of production and shipments. The increase in shipments came primarily from imports of portland cement as domestic production from produced and imported clinker gained only 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 88.6 Mt (97.6 million st), an increase of 1 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker, estimated at 93.5 Mt (103 million st), was up 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Masonry cement shipments of 5.5 Mt (6 million st), which equates closely to production, was up 6.3 percent. Blended ce-ment shipments were up 35.9 percent from 2004 at 2.35 Mt (2.6 million st).

I.INTRODUCTION The B E I R-III Report (NAS-1980) introduces large increases in the estimated health effects of radon as compared with previous work (NAS-1972). It is the purpose of this paper to point out some important failures of these new BEIR-III estimates, to offer a general critique of the procedures used in obtaining them, and to offer more rational estimates. In Sec. II we use the BEIR-III model to calculate the risk to non-smokers from environmental radon, and show that it predicts more than twice the total lung cancer rate actually experienced by nonsmokers. In Sec. III we review the histological evidence which shows that no more than about 10% of the lung cancers among non-smokers can be due to radiation. In Sec. IV, we discuss alternative causes of lung cancer, which further reduces the fraction that can be caused by radiation, and in Sec. V we summarize and conclude that the BEIR-III model over-estimates the lung cancer rate in nonsmokers due to environmental radon by at least a factor of 40. In Sec. VT we review the evidence on risk of radon exposure to smokers, and conclude that it is probably not more than four times the risk to non-smokers; this means that the BEIR-III model over-estimates the risk of low level radon exposure to smokers by at least a factor of 10. In Sec. VII, we consider the reasons for the large over-estimates in the BEIR-III. Report. II. BEIR-III LUNG CANCER RATES DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL RADON AND COMPARISON WITH TOTAL LUNG CANCER RATES AMONG NON-SMOKERS The BEIR-III Report gives the following estimates of the lung cancer risk from low-level radon exposure in terms of working-level-months (WLM): age 35-49, risk = 10 x 10-6 /yr-WLM 50-64, 20 >65, 50 where ages refer to age at death. For latent periods between exposure and onset of these risks it gives age 0-14, latent period = 25 years 15-34, 15-20 years (we use 17 yr) >35, 10 years where ages refer to age at exposure. This is a clear and unambiguous model which is readily usable for deriving numerical estimates. We begin by using it to calculate lung cancer rates due to environmental radon. *This is an abridged version of a paper scheduled to appear shortly in Health Physics. The first step in this process is to estimate the environmental exposures; this was done in a recent paper (Cohen-1981) which concluded that these are about 0.22 WLM/year. In Table 1, this is used to calculate the BEIR-111 predictions for radoninduced lung cancer rates in the U.S. (Col. (5)), and by combining these with population statistics, it is shown (Col.(7)), that it predicts about 24,500 fatalities per year, almost one-third of all U.S. lung cancers. The comparison between the age-specific expected rates from Col. (5) of Table 1 and observed rates among non-smokers is shown in Table 2. The recent paper by Garfinkel (1980) presents the results of a 12 year follow-up on one million Americans in a study by the American Cancer Society. The paper by Hammond (1966) gave the results of the first four years of that study. The paper by Kahn (1966) is based on the so-called "Dorn Study" of 293,000 U.S. veterans of World War II who carry government health insurance. It represents 8 and 1/2 years of follow-up. A recent update on that study (Rogot-1980) does not give absolute lung cancer rates, but the age-standardized ratio between smokers and non-smokers has remained the same which indicates that there has probably not been an important change in the rates for either. The paper by Hammond and Horn (Ha-1958) was an early study by American Cancer Society. It is immediately evident from Table 2 that the BEIR-III estimates for lung cancer induced by environmental radon exceed the [total] lung cancer rates due to [all] causes among non-smokers by about a factor of two at every age. It is only fair to point out that this does not represent a direct discrepancy with the BEIR-III Report since the latter states that its estimates for non-smokers may be too high by a factor ranging from 1 to 6, favoring a factor intermediate between these. Comparisons can also be made with total lung cancer incidence for all ages. A paper by Hammond and Seidman (Hammond-1980) gives the rate for ages above 40 to be 177 x 10-6/year for men and 124 x 10-6/year for women, whereas the rate calculated in Table 1 from BEIR-III for ages above 40 is 309 x 10-6, a factor of two higher. For all ages, the rate among women was reported as 36 x 10-6/year (Hammond 1958) as compared with 114 x 10-6/year calculated from BEIR-III in Table 1, a discrepancy of well over a factor of two. All of the data we have presented are basically from three study groups, but in all three cases the BEIR-III estimates for lung cancer induced [by environmental radon alone] are a factor of two higher than actual [tota] lung cancer rates among non-smokers. "The objective of this paper is to review the coal basins in the Canadian part of the Western Cordillera to aid their understanding, and to aid in finding and proving places of economic coal mining potential. Coal occurs in eugeosynclinal basins in the Western Cordillera which evolved through three stages: -from systems of volcanic arcs in the Late Jurassic to mid-Cretaceous; -through an intermediate stage with deposition in increasingly restricted successor basins in Jurassic to Early Tertiary; -to a continental stage by the Eocene. Minor coal seams occur usually in late volcanic arc stage sediments bur they can be locally thick as they are on Queen Charlotte Islands. Successor basins usually show a marine-paralic-limnic evolurion. Signijicanr coal deposits occur in the tarter two sequences in the Whirehorse (Tantalus) and Bowser (SkeenaSusrur) basins. Currenr activities are intensive in the more accessible Bowser Basin, for example at Telkwa, Susrut River and on the Groundhog coal field. On Vancouver Island major coal seams occur in cyclic sediments, but the more accessible deposits are mined our. Exploration renewed recently in the less accessible northern part of the Island, for example Quinsam, for surface mineable coal. The Western Cordillera is a mosaic of allochtonous tectonic blocks. They originated from the south and were displaced northward by several hundred kilometres. Many Tertiary coal basins are related to strikeslip transcurrent faults along which the later part of displacement took place, for example the Dawson coal area in the Tintina Trench. Tensional and dipslip normal faulting also created or enhanced sites for thick peat accumulation. For example at Hat Creek 280 m of coal occur in a 550 m section. Secondary structures are often better exploration targets than the main fault zones. Pluvial and alluvial fan environments away from the main drainage are usually the favourable sites for thicker and cleaner coal deposition."

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of remotely applied nitrogen-enhanced foam to aid in efforts to isolate and suppress a mine fire. The foam, in combination with a remotely-installed cementitious mine seal and a novel borehole pressure sampling methodology to determine the location of the suspected ignition source, was used to help control ventilation and inert the area surrounding the suspected ignition source by isolating it from oxygen. This allowed mine rescue teams to safely enter the mine, seal the area, and begin recovery operations to successfully return the mine to full production.

"THE WRITER'S acquaintance with Kootenay King mine is limited to a brief geological excursion in the vicinity. This paper has been compiled largely from maps of J. Sullivan, mine geologist in 1952, kindly made available to the writer by Transcontinental Resources; a 1942 private report by W. L. Brown; and personal communications with J. Sullivan. Remarks on regional geology, and the comparison with Sullivan mine, are specifically the writer's.The Kootenay King mine is situated in the westernmost range of the southern Canadian Rockies at an elevation of 7,300 feet. From the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, B. C., it lies 19 miles due east. Six miles of this distance are represented by the pronounced topographical and structural gap of the Rocky Mountain Trench. Mineral claims were locat-ed in the area prior to 1898. The deposit was first seriously explored in the late 1920s, and a small orebody was then outlined and developed. Mining and milling were undertaken in 1951.52. The orebody, amounting to about 14,000 tons, was mined out, and no significant new ore was revealed.The orebody is a replacement of dolomitic argillite by fine-grained galena, sphalerite, and pyrite. The sulphides are finely laminated in the direction of bedding, following out minor folds faithfully. The grade of ore estimated from diamond drill holes (W. L. Brown, 1942) was 11 ·I per cent zinc, 11 ·I per cent lead, and 3·8 ounces per ton of silver. The mineralized zone extends about 250 feet horizontally, 160 feet vertically, with a width of six to twenty feet.General GeologyThe country rocks are sediments of the Aldridge formation of late Precambrian age. For several thousand feet stratigraphically above and below the mine, the formation consists mainly of thinly laminated argillite and siltstone. Several horizons contain appreciable carbonate. About 2,800 feet stratigraphically below the mine, predominantly dolomitic beds mark the top of the underlying Fort Steele formation. The medium-bedded fine quartzites, which characterize about 10,000 feet of the Middle Aldridge in the Purcell range, have a restricted development amounting to only 2,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains. This member is about 2,200 feet above the mine horizon."

Ever since it made its debut in 1962, in the form of a Robbins 31R, the raiseborer has become an accepted tool in the mining and civil construction industries. The first raiseborer to be used in the Witwatersrand goldfields made its appearance in 1968. This was a Robbins 42R which could raisebore 185m deep holes to 1,22m diameter. From 1968 to 1973 capability increased with the introduction of first the 61R, then the 71R and finally the 83R, which could raisebore 610m deep holes to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for larger holes but the cost of bigger, more powerful machines requiring larger, stronger drill pipe, cutters and other accessories was prohibitive. To avoid replacing existing models such as the 71R, and in order to increase their capability, the concept of reaming in two stages sequentially was developed jointly by a German drilling equipment manufacturer, Wirth, their South African subsidiary, Transbor, and a local contractor, Rocbor Raiseboring and Mining Contractors. The result, the Sequential Reaming Head, proved most successful and existing machines, normally limited to 2,44m diameter holes, could now ream to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for even larger holes. In order to maximise the use of the sequential reaming head to meet this demand the HG330, and subsequently the HG330SP raiseborer were developed. Using a 4,26m/6,02m cutting head, these machines have raisebored holes 1000m deep in hard rock. The raise- boring of the first major hole to be excavated by this combination, the 484m deep x 6,02m diameter surface shaft at Premier Mine is described. Reference is also made to six other shafts which have been completed or are under construction.

"Rapid expansion of urban areas dictates the need to expand/rehabilitate the existing buried infrastructure at the same rate. The technical challenges such as variable soil and rock profiles, high groundwater tables and limitations imposed by the built environment combined with present fiscal and schedule limitations necessitates the implementation of fast and cost effective construction methods. Since drilling procedures and equipment allow the construction of overlapped pile systems in almost all subsurface conditions, the secant pile walls have become a cost-effective shoring option for such infrastructure expansion/rehabilitation projects. The secant pile walls constructed in a circular plan layout to form a vertical shaft provide unique advantages since they act as a compression ring. Secant pile walls require stringent drilling tolerances be achieved in order to provide structural support and to work as a compression ring in addition to a groundwater cut-off wall.This paper outlines design methodology, installation procedures and verification techniques used for the secant pile compression ring for the Waterloo Landfill Pumping Station No.2. The secant pile compression ring had a 6m inner diameter with over a 20m wall depth and over 18m excavation depth. The details of subsurface conditions, analytical and numerical methods used in design are presented here. The details of the monitoring system are introduced and results of monitoring are presented and compared with analytically estimated and numerically simulated quantities. The results presented in this study are considered to be of interest to those involved in design and construction of vertical circular shafts."

The martensite reaction in single crystals and polycrystals of 70 pct Fe-30 pct Ni alloys is shown to be autocatalytic in nature, producing bursts of transformation during cooling. The temperature of the first burst of transformation, called Mb, occurs below M, in these alloys. Experiments were devised to test the athermal embryo and strain embryo theories of martensite nucleation. The results indicate that internal strains, either within the virgin austenite or around existing martensitic plates, control the nucleation process in these alloys. Furthermore, the growth of martensitic plates is not limited by the attainment of an elastic balance with the austenitic matrix, but by the occurrence of plastic deformation at the martensite boundaries which interferes with the propagation mechanism. IN an investigation of the martensitic habit in single crystals of a 69 pct Fe-31 pct Ni alloy,' it was observed that about 25 pct of the austenite transformed during subatmospheric cooling within the time-interval of an audible click. This event proved quite spectacular: The shock wave sent out from the specimen freely suspended on a thread in the refrigerating liquid was occasionally sufficiently intense to shatter the Dewar container and to separate the toluene column in the immersed thermometer. The Present investigation was undertaken to determine- the kinetics and mechanism of this "burst" type of martensitic reaction. The analyses of the alloys studied are given in Table I. The composition of the single crystal specimens is designated by alloy A, while the polycrystal-line specimens were made of alloys B and C as noted in the text. The single crystals were prepared in a vacuum furnace, using a modified Bridgman technique. Most of these crystals were homogenized by holding for 24 hr at about 1300°C just after solidification. However, it may be emphasized here that the degree of homogenization was not a controlling factor in the subsequent experiments, inasmuch as specimens having different degrees of homogenization yielded the same results. All of the single crystals were fully austenitic as slowly cooled to room temperature. An illustration of the burst phenomenon is given in Fig. 1, which shows oscillograms of electrical resistivity and temperature vs. time during the continuous quenching of 1/16 in. wire specimens (alloy B) in a dry ice and acetone bath at —77°C. There are at least two observable bursts in this case, as indicated by the sharp decreases of resistance accompanying the sudden formation of substantial quantities of martensite. The thermal arrest during the quench probably corresponds to the larger burst. Usually the bursts are followed by more or less progressive transformation during continuous cooling. It will also be noted that the resistance continues to decrease after the specimen has reached the bath temperature. This isothermal change denotes the formation of martensite at constant temperature, and will be the subject of another paper. Examination of fiducial scratches on the surface of a transformed single crystal has shown2 that the scratches in adjoining nonparallel martensitic plates are usually bent in opposite directions, as though one plate forms in such a way as to relieve the matrix stresses set up by the adjacent plate. This, together with some of the results described in ref. 1, Table I. The following series of experiments were performed in order to test this idea. Cooperative Nature of the Burst Two adjacent disks, Va in. thick x % in. diam, were cut from a single austenite crystal of alloy A using a jeweler's saw. One of the disks was then cut into 15 parts. Then 12 of the latter pieces and the second disk were austenitized (stress relieved) at 600°C for 30 min and water quenched to room temperature. The chemical action of molten anhydrous pyridinium chloride (pyridine hydrochloride) on oxy salts and ores of some Group IV and V metals are discussed-in particular zirconium, hafnium, niobium (columbium) , and tantalum. Laboratory-scale experiments are described whose results suggest that this reaction might provide a practicable means of converting ores of these metals to the anhydrous metal chlorides. Experimental results are given which provide some insight into the nature of the reactions and some of the compounds which could be present at intermediate stages. The treatment of ores of the more refractory metals is difficult and expensive and often demands the use of gaseous chlorine, hydrogen fluoride, or other reagents which are, if nothing else, expensive and dangerous to use. This situation is, of course, due to the strong metal-oxygen affinity resulting from the high charge and the small size of the metal ion which combine to produce such high lattice energy in the metal oxide as to defeat standard reduction methods. Thus, the characteristic of these metals which leads to one of their most important properties—corrosion resistance—is the main hurdle in obtaining the metal. Many common methods' for treating ores of zirconium and niobium (columbium), for example, proceed as directly as possible to the preparation of anhydrous halides. These halides are purified by now standard processes of solvent extraction, fractional distillation, and so on. This paper reports on preliminary stages in the development of a method of treating these ores—particularly of niobium—so as to prepare the anhydrous, volatile halides by the use of chemical reagents which are much more easily handled than those used at present. CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES The solvent action of aminium halides has been referred to periodically in the literature over several decades. The chemistry of pyridinium chloride has been discussed particularly by Audreith2 and Starke.3 However, since this is not familiar chemistry in its nonaqueous setting, it is perhaps well to point out some general metallurgical principles and applications. One can use, as point of departure, the fact that HC1 dissolved in pyridine is an acid very much the same as aqueous HC1. It thus gives essentially all the reactions of the HC1 with which we are familiar. However, when the ratio of HC1:pyridine reaches 1:l (a ratio far higher than is possible with H2O) the solution becomes solid C5F5NHC1, pyridinium chloride.* Inter- estingly, the acidic properties of HC1 persist in this medium, although they are manifest only in the molten state of the compound. Some typical reactions of divalent metal compounds which we have carried out in our laboratories are the following: 2PyHCl + Zn — (ZnCl2) + H2 + 2Py 2PyHCl + MnO — (MnCl2) + H2O + 2Py 2PyHCl + CuS — (CuCl2) + H2S + 2Py 2PyHCl + CaCO3 — (CaCl2) + H2O + CO2 + 2Py In these equations, the parentheses indicate a solvated compound which in water would be predominantly a hydra ted cation but which in molten PyHCl will more likely be a complex chloro-anion of the type MC14-. Some important physical properties of pyridinium chloride (PyHCl) are given in Table I. One sees from the data in Table I that at the temperature of molten pyridinium chloride both water and pyridine will boil away. Thus the system will be kept anhydrous. For this reason the reaction 2NbCl5 + 5H2O— Nb2O5 + 10HC1 has no counterpart in molten PyHCl. Instead, the chloride is made even more stable by the formation of a hexachloro complex: Nb2O5 + 12PyHC1 — 2PyHNbC16 + 5H2O + 10Py One interesting property of these complexes is their thermal instability which for the case of niobium can be illustrated as PyHNbCl6 — PyHCl + NbCl5 With a view to possible use of this chemistry in ore treatment, we have attempted to dissolve Pyrochlore (essentially FeO - Nb2O5) and recover the NbC15 from it.

The influence of modifications in the molybdenum, vanadium and, to a limited degree, carbon and boron content to a basic composition of 5 pct Cr, 0.75 pct Mo, 1 pct V hot-work tool steel composition, was studied in respect to hardenability, grpain- coarsening temperature, and tempering charactevistics. Tensile, impact, and fatigue pvoperties were studied for the most promising compositions. An alloy with a typical composition of 0.43 pct C, 4.97 pct CI-, 0.33 pct Si, 2.25 pct Mo, and 1.00 pct V uas found to offer the most favorable combination of properties in respect to high-strength applicntions when tempered at 1100°F. MANY 5 pct Cr high-strength steels are at present being manufactured in North America which fit well into the classification of the AISI-SAE system. Much interest has been shown in these materials as ultra-high-strength steels for use at elevated temperatures. The limiting temperature of use lies at the point where the steels begin to soften rapidly. Although a great deal of information has been made available in the past two years on the properties of selected alloys in this series, little information exists on the effect of systematically varying the ccntent of one or more elements in the 5 pct Cr-base alloy. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the effect of variations of the carbon, molybdenum, vanadium, and, to a limited extent, the silicon, manganese, boron, and niobium content of a 5 pct Cr steel to the AISI H-13 base analysis. The Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) for the simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead was developed at Avonmouth from the 1930's with activity intensifying in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Present operations are based around the No.4 furnace which was built in 1967. Development during the 1980's has been driven by the need to sustain operations at low metals prices and has been aimed at reducing manning whilst increasing output. Although hit by several major plant disruptions, progress has been steady, culminating in a ú10 million capital programme in 1988?89 to upgrade the operation. The most important technical developments, reflecting the needs of the 1990's have, in the sintering area, included improvements to feed conditioning and sinter quality, a 20% uprate in production capacity by debottlenecking, and pilot work leading to the installation of a Boliden-Norzink mercury removal plant. In the smelting area the ISP furnace has been rebuilt, with a redesigned bottom section to eliminate earlier operating sensitivities, and to achieve higher blowing capability, and at the zinc refinery the columns have been rearranged for more flexible operation and higher capacity.

"Gold recovery gains in the order of one to two percent have been realized in 2009 due to changes in the operation of the grinding circuits at Barrick Gold Corporation’s Hemlo - Williams Mill. The initiative known as “split milling” involves milling low grade open pit ore in one grinding circuit and higher grade underground ore in the other grinding circuit under different conditions.The philosophy of split milling involves processing higher grade underground ore at a lower throughput rate and a finer grind while milling lower grade open pit ore at a higher throughput rate and a coarser grind. Bench scale tests showed that the recovery relationship for underground ore sources was much more grind sensitive than that of open pit ore. This relationship proved to hold in the plant. The gold recovery gain due to finer grinding of the higher grade ore is much greater than the recovery loss due to coarser grinding on the lower grade ore. Since the majority of gold is being recovered at a higher rate, this results in higher overall plant gold recovery when compared to the traditional operation philosophy of blending the ore sources.The challenges for achieving the maximum benefits of split milling were two fold; the need to increase throughput on the open pit ore milling circuit and a means of grinding finer on the underground circuit. The former was met with an increase in SAG (Semi-Autogenous Grinding) mill ball charge, a basic “drill to mill” blasting campaign and changes to the primary gyratory crusher. The latter was met with a reduced SAG mill ball charge and a higher milling density. The resulting benefits in additional gold recovered are in the order of $3-5 million per annum.INTRODUCTIONThe Williams Mill processes ore from three different ore sources, the David Bell Mine (DB), the Williams Underground Mine (WUG) and the Williams Open Pit (OP). All three ore sources are located within the Hemlo camp in Northwestern Ontario adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway. The Williams Mill was built in the mid 1980’s at which time it was designed to process 3,000 dry metric tonnes per day through a 22’ SAG mill in series with a 16’ ball mill. In 1988 a Mill expansion doubled the mill capacity by adding a second identical grinding circuit. A photo of the current grinding circuit can be seen in Figure 1. Today the Williams Mill processes an average of 8,000 tonnes per day of which approximately 60% is from the Williams Open Pit."
