THE substitution of cobalt for part of the nickel in Invar was found by P. H. Brace1 to lower the coefficient of expansion. Scott1 extended the use of cobalt to alloys of higher inflection temperatures. Such alloys have a larger temperature range of low expansion than those without cobalt, and [ ] their use up to 400° or 500°C. offers decided advantages in certain applications. However, it has been found that the iron-nickel-cobalt alloys are not stable in this temperature range. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Two methods were used in studying the stability of the low-expansion iron-nickel-cobalt alloys. Dilatometer specimens were held at 480°C, for 9 months and the change in expansion characteristics was determined. Filings were held for about 2 months at various temperatures and the change in structure was determined by X-ray diffraction. As shown by Table I, the alloys studied covered a wide range in nickel plus cobalt content (which determines the inflection [ ] temperature) as well as some variation in the ratio of nickel to iron (which controls the temperature of the gamma to alpha transformation). Included also are alloys containing carbon and vanadium, carbon and titanium and three with various amounts of copper. The Blackbird district, Lemhi County, Idaho, has long been recognized as a potential source of cobalt and copper. However, the comparatively low grade and small size of the known ore bodies, the small demand for cobalt, and. the lack of adequate roads throughout the region precluded extensive exploration of the early discoveries in the area. Recent advances in alloy metallurgy, accentuated by wartime activities, greatly increased the demand for sources of domestic cobalt. Beginning In 1941, engineers of the Bureau of Mines conducted an examination and exploration program in the Blackbird district. This work was supplemented by an exploration program by engineers of the Howe Sound Mining Co., 730 Fifth Ave., New York 19, N.Y.

ALTHOUGH many methods have been suggested for the calculation of tensile strength and yield point from chemical composition, their usefulness has been limited to a particular cooling rate or section size. Further limitations have been imposed by failure to take into account many of the alloying elements that exert a considerable influence on the tensile strength or yield point. These systems, nevertheless, have filled an important need in many instances. The value of a system for the calculation of the tensile properties from the chemical composition and cooling rate is that it permits the prediction of the effect of alloying elements and heat-treatment on the mechanical, properties, so that more efficient use of alloying elements may be made. Furthermore, it aids in the choice of steel for a given application and tends to decrease the number of steels that otherwise would have to be tested. It is the purpose of this work to present a method of calculating tensile strength and yield point from the chemical composition and to suggest a method of correlating the tensile-strength and yield-point factors and cooling rate. Steelmakers have been interested for many years in the calculation of the tensile strength of hot-rolled steels. Quest and Washburn' summarize several of the attempts that have been made to devise formulas. They show the inadequacy of each of these formulas and present one of their own. It is apparent from their work that a simple additive equation of the type TS = A + BX + Cy + DZ + ? ? ? , where A, B, C, D, etc. are experimentally determined constants and x, y, z, etc., are the percentages of alloying elements present in the steel, is not adequate to analyze fully the situation encountered in the calculation of tensile strength. For example, it was found that the difference between the calculated and observed values became progressively greater as the carbon and manganese contents were increased. Therefore, the effect of manganese was given as a function of the carbon content. Grossmann,2 in his work on the hardenability of quenched steels, and Walters,3 in his method of calculation of tensile strength of normalized steels, present two cases in which multiplying factors were successfully used to express the combined effect of alloying elements. The factors in both cases were obtained from the fractional increase in hardenability or tensile strength with increase of alloy content. Yield point often is more important in design than tensile strength. Considerable attention has been directed in recent years to methods of electric prospecting other than the conventional direct-current techniques. It has been extensively recognized that electrical data of a more general nature than that possible by direct-current methods might be useful in geophysical studies. To this end, a number of different types of electric currents have been employed, such as single-frequency alternating currents, square-topped periodic current waves,4 periodic surges of a less specific nature,s and suddenly applied direct current.1,2 Yet, to the author's knowledge, little analysis of these different types of driving currents has been made from the standpoint of network theory to determine just what typc of currents would give the most useful data, and, most important of all, to determine the relation of the data taken by one method to those of another. Without touching on the actual theoretical problem of how currents flow in the earth under specified boundary conditions, some very useful information can be obtained from the study of the fundamental integral equations of electrical networks, throwing light on the problem not ordinarily appreciated by the field worker. Some manipulation of the standard network equations will be made, with the sole purpose in mind of developing expressions leading to practical results. Suppose that four points in the earth have been located and it is wished to obtain the most useful type of electrical data by inserting current into two of them and measuring the potential developed between the other two. The first problem that arises is that of which pair of the four shall be chosen as current grounds. In the direct-current case, where only steady potentials are measured, the selection is of little consequence, but as soon as currents varying with time are used at the current grounds, a new effeet arises. One critical factor in open pit mining projects is the estimation of the recoverable reserves. The reason for this is that at the valuation stage there is a lack of information about future metal prices and production costs. Consequently, the estimation of the recoverable reserves needs to be done based on a fixed break-even cut-off grade (BECG), in which fixed expected metal prices and production costs are assumed throughout the operating life of the mine (OLM). In this paper, an alternative technique for estimating the recoverable reserves of an open pit mining project is presented and explained in detail. The main characteristic of this technique is that it estimates the recoverable reserves of the project using mining costs as reference: this is done due to the fact that mining costs are easier to model than metal prices. Another important characteristic of this technique is that it uses the uncertainty of the geology of the orebody, given by simulations of the deposit, to make final strategic decisions, such as the selection of the operating life of the mine and the optimal production rate, which minimise the risk of not achieving future production targets while maximising the upside potential of future rewards. As it will be shown, the final outcome of the proposed technique is the generation of a robust open pit design, that include cutbacks and ultimate pit limits, called the marginal open pit mine design (MOPMD). One characteristic of the MOPMD is that, at each production period, it will be characterised by their respective geological uncertainty, given as probability distributions of ore, waste and metal quantities, and by marginal economical project indicators, such as cut-off grades and metal prices, among others. A Metalurgia do Pó é um processo de conformação mecânica com um grande crescimento de sua aplicação no cenário industrial brasileiro, por possuir um vasto campo de aplicação que inclui, por exemplo, a fabricação de componentes automotivos, eletrodomésticos, ferramentas de corte e ferramentas elétricas. A sinterização é a fase mais importante do processo, no qual o pó já compactado é submetido a uma temperatura abaixo do seu ponto de fusão, obtendo como resultado um material com excelente acabamento, precisão dimensional e propriedades mecânicas. O trabalho apresentado tem como objetivo avaliar o comportamento do composto intermetálico denominada de Al12Si com a composição de 12% de Si, 1,14% de Ni; 1,08% de Mg; 0,45% Fe; 1,08 % de Cu e Al em balanceamento. Foi sinterizado com gás argônio para fazer um comparativo do mesmo material, porém utilizando uma atmosfera de nitrogênio. Tendo como objetivos específicos realizar levantamentos sobre a densidade, microdureza e metalografia apresentados em função das cargas aplicadas em cada uma das amostras. Comparar a influência do tratamento térmico T6 na dureza dos materiais em função da atmosfera de sinterização. A metalografia apresentou porosidade inerente ao processo, mas houve um acréscimo de microdureza entre as amostras produzidas em atmosfera com argônio e as produzidas com atmosfera com nitrogênio com uma variação de 59,51 HV-50g. para 72,30 HV-50g.

Kansas maintained its fourth position on the list of all oil-producing states, for the ninth consecutive year. Total crude-oil production during 1935, as reported by the Oil & Gas Journal, was 53,364,446 bbl. on 97 per rent tank table calculations. This represented an increase of 17 per cent over the production in 1934, which had been the all-time peak of production in Kansas up to that time. Many of the 51 new discoveries of the year, listed in Table 2, did not have a pipe line outlet until about January, 1936; therefore did not contribute to the 1935 production of the state. The potential of all wells in Kansas at the end of the year was 998,-000 bbl. per day, and the daily allowable was 143,000 bbl. per day, showing proration to the extent of 14 per cent of capacity, under the rules of the State Corporation Commission. Several important new pipe lines were built into western Kansas by extending older lines from east to northwest, providing additional outlets for new crude-oil production, and increasing the service facilities from the older oil fields. The crude-oil price level remained unchanged throughout 1935 as it did in 1934, the price of Kansas 36" gravity crude being quoted at $1 per barrel. However, on Jan. 9, 1936, the price of this gravity oil was raised to $1.10 per barrel. Following the trend of the past several years, drilling activity was largely in western Kansas, and showed a still farther westward push from last year. A relatively high percentage of successful wildcat wells at a relatively shallow drilling depth, combined with the expiration of leased acreage assembled before the depression, caused the rapid exploration and development campaign, begun in 1934, to continue. This has caused the opening of more new fields in 1935 than during any previous year in the history of oil production in Kansas. A summary of the results of drilling in western Kansas is given in Table 2. Eastern Kansas had considerable drilling, showed six new fields or extensions of oil fields, but in the limited space of this paper such developments cannot be described.

A filter consisting of a synthetic fibrous material has been determined to be a viable alternative to the wire mesh panels currently used in irrigated filter dust collection systems. An extensive laboratory investigation of the material showed that it removed a higher percentage of both respirable coal and quartz dust from the air entering a collector than did the flat and pleated wire mesh panel designs. This improvement in dust collection efficiency reduced the amount of coal and quartz dust discharged from the collector exhaust by approximately 44%. Since continued exposure to excessive levels (>5%) of respirable quartz dust presents a severe health hazard, this alternative filter medium could be of use to those mines required to comply with more stringent dust standards due to quartz.

"The Red Dog mine has increased mill throughput most years since start-up. Although flotation equipment has been added over the last 10 years, the Red Dog metallurgical performance has been restricted by a lack of adequate flotation capacity. Two reduced tonnage trials conducted in 1997 as well as numerous SAG relines have consistently indicated the potential to significantly increase both zinc concentrate recovery and grade with additional flotation capacity. Later in 1999, a new circuit was designed with increased flotation capacity while simplifying the current circuit, providing for three stages of dilution cleaning, and creating a retreat section. The purpose of the retreat section is to target the more complex particles and allow the chemical environment to be fine tuned for improved iron depression. In total, 21 Outokumpu OK50 (50 m3) mechanical flotation cells and four 3.66 mØ column cells were added to the current flotation circuit. The VIP (value improvement program) mill optimization project is also addressing thickening, water treatment, and power generation issues and has a total budget of US$105 M. Start-up of equipment was phased in to minimize the impact on current operations and the project was completed by the end of 2001. IntroductionRed Dog Operations started production in November 1989. The mine is located above the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska. It is linked by an 80 km road to a port-site facility where the concentrate is stored. Concentrate is shipped to markets throughout the world during the one hundred days of open seas. As of January 2002, the Red Dog main pit had 38.4 Mt of reserves grading 19.2% Zn, 5.3% Pb, and 102 g/t Ag. Additional reserves and resources contribute an additional 72 Mt at 15.6% Zn, 4.2% Pb, and 78 g/t Ag. Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian, black shale-hosted, zinc-lead-silver deposit located in the DeLong Mountains, western Brooks Range, Alaska. All the rocks associated with the mineralizing event are considered to be part of the exhalite rock package. Silicification was a dominant component of the mineralizing event and the host shale has been silicified and locally resembles a chert. The major sulphides in decreasing order of abundance are sphalerite, pyrite, marcasite and galena. Most of the deposit’s silver occurs within the crystal structure of the galena. The dominant ore mineral, sphalerite, is very fine grained to amorphous and is commonly intergrown with silica. Ore textures are massive, fragmental, chaotic, veined and rarely show classic sulphide sedimentary layering. The upper portion of the orebody has been physically and chemically weathered. Oxidation has altered the sulphides to sulphates. The zinc and iron sulphates are very soluble and are readily depleted from the weathered cap, while the lead sulphate is residual and is, therefore, enriched."

THE township of Costerfield is situated in the parish of Costerfield, county of Dalhousie, and lies 6 miles east of Heathcote and 30 miles south-east of Bendigo. It is separated from Heathcote by the Mt. Ida Range, which forms the western boundary of the Silurian formation. It is situated at the head-waters of Tin-pot Creek, a small southerly tributary of the Deegay Ponds Creek, which flows east to the Goulburn River.The field was discovered in 1860 by two prospectors, Coster and Field, who were guided there by a shepherd, M Nicol Coster and Field had already discovered an antimony lode about three miles nearer Heathcote, when M Nicol offered to guide them to the larger outcrop. The main Costerfield reef at that time projected above the surface, and was white through oxidation, though the bluey sulphide showed on fracture. No alluvial gold of any consequence was obtained at Costerfield, but a little was obtained, at Redcastle, 7 miles to the north, and in some of the gullies to the east.Following its discovery there came a period of prosperity to Costerfield, while the mining operations were confined to the oxidized zone. The early success of mining at Costerfield was due to the gold values, and it is probable that the oxidized zone was secondarily enriched. The earliest available record of values is a crushing of Coster and Co. on the Antimony reef (now known as the Costerfield reef), when 200 tons from a depth of 70 ft. averaged 4 oz. per ton in July, 1861. At this time a crushing mill had not yet been erected at Costerfield, and the ore was carted and treated at Redcastle. The massive antimony ore, consisting of mixed oxides and sulphides, was separated by hand-picking as "marketable ore," and the remainder crushed for gold. Two cemented paste backfill (CPB) formulations containing pyritic tailings were leached in deionized water in flooded and alternating air-flooded environments and in a simulated acid rock drainage-type (ARD) solution. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), solid phase chemistry and acid-base accounting measurements documented the weathering characteristics of the CPB samples. Short-term exposures of the portland-CPB samples preferentially dissolved the cement binder to a greater extent than slag-Portland CPB mistures. In all cases, the added neutralizing potential provided to backfill by cement was short-lived and insufficient to neutralize the acid generating potential of the mixture.

"The inner frictional resistance of open-ended piles depend heavily on the degree of soil plugging. Many factors including pile diameter, relative density and end conditions of the piles influence the degree of soil plugging. In this paper, the effects of inner sleeves attached at the pile base on the inner frictional resistance are discussed. The experiments were conducted on a medium-dense sandy ground using smallscale model piles. The results suggest that the inner frictional resistance is influenced by sleeve height for 50 mm diameter piles although it is independent for 30 mm diameter piles. The results also indicate that soil plug height is influenced by the sleeve height. The results of the incremental filling ratio (IFR) showed that penetration of non-sleeved piles is closer to unplugged state than the sleeved piles. The results of the IFR also reveal that the degree of soil plugging is affected by the sleeve height for 50 mm diameter piles although the variation is very limited in 30 mm diameter piles. The results on the coefficient of lateral earth pressure suggested that it increases from 1.08 – 1.75 when the sleeve height is increased from 10 – 100 mm for 50 mm diameter piles.INTRODUCTIONPrevious studies have shown that the behaviour of open-ended piles is different from closed-ended piles (Szechy, 1961; Randolph et al., 1979; Paikowsky and Whitman, 1990). Open-ended driven piles are widely used for deep foundations, in particular in offshore deep foundations. Generally, it is accepted that a short open-ended pile produces a smaller bearing capacity than a similar closed-ended pile (Nauroy and Tirant, 1983). However, a long open-ended pile can produce a similar bearing capacity as a closed-ended pile due to a large inner frictional resistance mobilised between the inner pile shaft and inner soil (Lehane and Randolph, 2002). These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. MINOR industrial minerals included in this chapter are: the alum minerals, bromine, calcium chloride, epsomite and other natural magnesium salts, iodine, meerschaum, quartz, industrial crystals other than quartz (Iceland spar, tourmaline, fluorite, selenite, mica), and nonfuel gases (air, helium, carbon dioxide). ALUM MINERALS The alums comprise a series of double sulphates (or selenates) isomorphous with potash alum, which, according to a ruling of the Pennsylvania courts, is the only product commercially described simply as "alum." Common alum occurs in nature as kalinite (K2SO4- A12 (SO4) 324H2O). The mineral mendozite (Na2S04) 3.A12 (SO4)3- 24H2O) is soda alum; tschennigite (NH4)2SO4.Al2 (SO4)3.24H2O) is ammonium alum; and there are about a dozen other native alums and related double sulphates. Alunite (alumstone or alum rock) has the formula Al2(SO4) 3.K2S04.4A1 (OH)3 and alunogen, Al2(So4) 3.18H20. Saline residues, found wherever natural water is evaporated, may contain sulphate of alumina, which for most uses is the essential ingredient of alum. Mineral wells and springs that emerge from beds of pyritiferous shale are typically astringent and at times form local deposits of alum, generally as incrustations. Acid waters acting upon aluminous rocks may form sulphates of alumina. The alums of commerce, as well as aluminum sulphate (concentrated alum), are produced principally by treating bauxite with acid, but they have been made also on a substantial scale from clay, cryolite, pyritic slates, schists, lignites, alunite, and leucite. Alum shale-chiefly clay, pyrite, and (usually) carbonaceous matter-was extensively used in England as a source of alum for more than two centuries. In France, pyritic lignites mixed with sand and clay were burned in heaps to red ash, the leach Liquors from which, after treatment with ammonia, yielded alum and copperas. It is almost self-evident that the student of geology depends for his education in geology only in small measure upon his own observation. His chief sources of information are lectures and personal instruction from teachers, and the geological literature. Of these, the literature is by far the most important. The total geological knowledge available to the geologist of today is substantially that which is on the printed page, and no more than that. There are many geologists of outstanding rank who during the course of a busy and useful professional career have accumulated valuable geological knowledge. This, however, is never available to the profession, owing to the disinclination of these geologists to write or to the refusal of their employers to allow the results of their work to be published. With the passing of these geologists, their accumulated knowledge is irretrievably lost. In many mining districts the operating companies are not averse to the publication of geological information gathered by their engineering and geological staffs, but for various reasons this information is not published. However, when a public survey geologist goes into the district this information is placed at his disposal and eventually is published. But for the intervention of a disinterested public scientist, this information would have been buried in company files. In the last analysis, the teachers themselves depend largely upon the printed page for the knowledge they pass on to the student. Without geological literature, then, the instruction of geological students would be almost impossible. There is no .question that, as a whole, geologists who are on the public payroll have to their credit far more contributions to literature than have either teachers or professional geologists, whether the latter be independent or in the employ of private corporations. The very fact that geologists are upon the public payroll places them under obligation to make available to the public the results of their endeavors. They must either prepare these results for publication or they must furnish data or otherwise aid their colleagues to publish their results. Most people involved in the mining industry are familiar with student-industry co-op work-study programs. Many colleges and universities have used them for years. Northern College’s Haileybury School of Mines student co-op program adds a new dimension of productivity to the college and the mining industry. The college is located in Hailey-bury, Ontario, Canada. An example of the program’s success is the school’s relationship with Sabin Metal’s SMC (Canada) Ltd.’s McAlpine Mill in Cobalt, Ontario. Students gain practical knowledge and experience while industry gains an eager-to-learn worker. And many of the college’s advanced research services are made available to industry to supplement their own capabilities. The McAlpine Mill was established to provide custom milling of slags and ores. It also recovers metal values from other products of the primary and secondary precious metal industries.

This project includes the excavation and concrete lining of approximately 18 900 m (62 000 ft) of 5.5 m (18 ft) finished diameter subway tunnel for the Los Angeles MTA. The project required that four soft ground headings be excavated from a single shaft located near the mid point of the tunnels. The tunnels were classified "gassy" during the excavation phase. Because of the contract schedule requirements and the limited urban work site available, many logistical problems had to be overcome during the project while excavation was accomplished at a record setting pace. Some unique project features include the muck handling system and an access shaft using a high strength tieback support system. In order to accomplish the work, an extensive effort to plan and construct the main work site was required.

George Hammell Cook was born at Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey, January 5, 1818. His early education was obtained in the country school, and he was, for a short time, a teacher in his native town. In 1836 he was engaged, as a civil engineer, in making surveys and locating the line of the Morris and Essex Railroad from Newark to Morristown, and the extension of the road to the Delaware River. Appreciating the advantages of a thorough education, and seeking a wider field of usefulness, he entered the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy in 1838, and, was graduated from that .school in 1839. In this institution he heard the lectares of Amos Eaton, the famous teacher, from whom so many of our older scientists caught their inspiration and love for the natural sciences.
