"The property of Pamour Porcupine Mines, Limited, is in the eastern Porcupine area, about 12 miles northeast of Timmins. It covers parts of lots 3-6 (inclusive), cons. 5 and 6, Whitney tp., Cochrane district, Ontario. It is an amalgamation of the old La Palme, Three Nations, and Porcupine Grande properties.The first discovery on the Pamour was made in 1911. During 1911 to 1914 a small shaft was sunk on the Three Nations vein to the 200-foot level and a 100-ton stamp mill was put in operation, but only a small production was achieved. The property remained idle from 1914 to 1923. In 1924 some diamond drilling was done along the Keewatin-Timiskaming contact with some encouraging results, but the gold mineralization encountered was too low in general at the price of gold then prevailing to warrant further · work. The increase in the price of gold revived interest in the area, and the above noted amalgamation was effected in 1934. Options were taken and successively dropped by two large mining companies. Following this, exploration both on the surface and underground was started by Quebec Gold Mining Corporation, Limited. Diamond drilling in the early part of 1933 showed considerable ore in conglomerate and greywacke to the east. In the middle of 1935 Noranda Mines, Limited, assumed control and management. A new shaft was sunk and the property was ·equipped with a mill having an initial capacity of750 tons a day. This was subsequently enlarged to 1,500 tons a day.From the commencement of milling (May 16, 1936) to the end of 1946, 5,025,545 tons of ore having an average grade of 0.1327 oz. a ton ($4.64 at $35 an oz.) have been mined and milled."

The pebble-phosphates of Florida occur in a district roughly bounded on the north by the 28th parallel, on the east by an irregular line running a few miles east of Peace river and on the west by the Gulf of Mexico, and covering an area of about 4000 square miles. There seems to be no reason why the deposits should not extend farther south along the gulf coast. That section remains unprospected, transportation-facilities being non-existent. It has been said that the Pittsburgh bed is the most valuable single mineral deposit yet known to man. The figures in Table 1 are presented in substantiation of that claim. Production and Value In order that the figures of Table 1 may have any weight, a statement must be made to show how they were arrived at. Because, to the writer's knowledge, no accurate separate figures ever have been kept of the production and value of the Pittsburgh coal bed, the states will be considered separately. Pennsylvania Accurate figures are obtainable for Pennsylvania for recent years because recent reports of the Pellnsylvania Department of Mines show the production from each mine and the bed worked at each mine. For recent years, therefore, it is only necessary to list the mines working in the Pittsburgh bed and add up their production. The value was obtained by treating each county separately, applying the average price for the county to the production of Pittsburgh coal in that county. Bauxite is currently produced at three centres in Australia: - Weipa in northern Queensland; Gove on the northeastern tip of Northern Territory; and in the Darling Range near Perth, Western Australia. At each of these centres the bauxite is of Tertiary age and occurs as blanket-like, lateritic crusts in which gibbsite is the predominant mineral. Development was essentially in situ although possibly the deposits, particularly at Gove, are in part of transported origin. All of the deposits formed from quartz-rich parent rocks with those at Weipa and Gove being derived from kaolinitic sands while in the Darling Range, granite and other crystalline rocks of Precambrian age immediately underline the lateritic bauxite.

The AntaKori Cu-Au-Ag Project in the Hualgayoc mining district, northern Peru is a complex system dominated by calcic Cu-Au-Ag skarn hosted in Cretaceous sedimentary units. The skarn system is partially overprinted by two younger epithermal systems: high sulphidation (HS) epithermal gold-copper-silver mineralization related to the adjacent Tantahuatay system, and intermediate sulphidation carbonate-base metal Au-Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu mineralization related to late stage rhyolite stocks and flow domes (Wilson, 2012).

This paper outlines the patterns of methane emission in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations and discusses the effects that these patterns have on the decision as to whether the methane is most economically handled by ventilation alone or by means of a methane-drainage system in addition to ventilation. The costs of handling the methane in the ventilation system and the costs of implementing the methane-drainage system are discussed, as well as the costs related to the production of coal. The important issues of production slowdowns and gasouts are also discussed, as well as the proper response of mine management to such a situation. Suggestions concerning the keeping of production records related to methane problems are made, and the justification for more intensive economic analysis of coalbed methane extraction and utilization is discussed

BACKGROUND OF SURFACE MINING Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal mere mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-pear periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to increase. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu pd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu pd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining. 4) Surface mining normally recovers a much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures call best be extracted by surface mining

While American scientific literature contains much information upon geologic conditions controlling the production of oil in Rumania, copper in Chile, and other fuel and metallic resources in many foreign countries, it is singularly lacking in data about the nonmetallics outside of the United States. Thus, though the United States is the outstanding market for European high-quality refined kaolin, and for the chinaware, porcelain, and other products of the European ceramics industries, American literature contains only the briefest references to the deposits from which the raw kaolin utilized is obtained. To the writer, to whom has come in the past year the opportunity of visiting a number of these deposits personally, they have proved of extreme interest both commercially and geologically. It is the latter phase that is discussed in this paper. The older and now largely crystalline rock areas of France, Germany, and other parts of western Europe contain numerous pegmatite dikes of which the upper portions have been subjected to surface weathering and kaolinization in much the same way as those of the eastern portion of the United States. Like the latter, the European pegmatite kaolins have long been known for their freedom from iron and other impurities offensive to the china and porcelain manufacturer. Unfortunately, they are also, like the American deposits, individually of small size and noted for their high costs of production. Deposits of sedimentary clay similar in many respects to the high-quality sedimentary kaolins of Georgia and South Carolina are known and worked, notably in southern Germany and in the Newton Abbott district of Devon and Dorset in England. In general, their relationship to the parent rock from which they were derived is more evident than in the United States and the individual deposits are of smaller areal extent and less regular in outline. While these deposits are of considerable economic importance they did not, because of their similarity to deposits in America, attract and hold the interest of the writer to the extent that several other types of deposits did. Exploration work in 1932 in the Rocky Mountain region, which includes the states of Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, resulted in the discovery of one new oil field, Cut Bank in Glacier County, Montana; one new gas field, Craig in Moffat County, Colorado; and the definite outlining of a second gas field, Piceance Creek in Rio Blanco County, Colorado, in which there had been drilled but one small gas well prior to 1932. During the year, 95 producing oil or gas wells were completed, giving new initial production amounting to 188,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 176,420 bbl. of oil per day for the region. By far the largest part of this new production of both oil and gas was developed in southeastern New Mexico, mainly the Hobbs field. However, the Dry Creek field of Carbon County, Montana, contributed over 5000 bbl. of; new oil production. Sixty-two wells were abandoned during the year but of this number only 10 promising structures were nonproductive. The remaining 52 wells had little to recommend their drilling from a structural or strati-graphical standpoint. Eighty-eight wells were suspended in the region' during 1932 before the tests had reached their individual objective horizons. Many of these suspensions were due to financial difficulties and it is possible that several of the operations may be resumed at a later date. At the close of the year, 54 wells were actively drilling, 54 were shut down and there were 20 rigs and locations in the five Rocky Mountain states. "INTRODUCTION Underground mines have the risk of accumulation of gases if not ventilated properly or during and after emergency situations when ventilation controls become damaged or stop working. Common gases that are monitored in underground coal are carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O2), and methane (CH4). Methane is a gas found in coal and released through mining; its explosive range is between 5% and 15%. Methane is commonly monitored on all mining equipment and with handheld gas sensors carried by most underground coal miners. Fiber optics (FO) is a popular technology applied in underground mining, particularly for its electric isolation. Many miners are familiar with FO cables hung throughout the mine, which are primarily used in the communication of voice and data (Taylor et al. 2010). Advancements in laser and fiber optics have made this technology well suited for gas sensing the harsh environment of mining applications. The work of the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the use of fiber optic monitoring of gases in mines started in 1992. Dubaniewicz et al. (1992, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2003) developed prototype gas sensors, including methane gas sensors, for research purposes. Previous research (Dubaniewicz & Chilton 1992) identified potential fiber optic gas detection cross-sensitivities associated with the index of refraction of various gases. Index of refraction effects was noted for carbon dioxide (CO2), which is produced in significant quantities by mine fires or explosions. NIOSH released a broad agency announcement (BAA) for the development and demonstration of mine safety and health technology (CDC NIOSH 2017). The objective of this announcement was to validate a sensor, specifically fiber optic, for the mine environment and test it in an actual working mine. The RSL FO sensor “OptoSniff” provided from this work is capable of hundreds of sensing points over distances of up to 20 km, has a measurement range of 0.05% to 100%, senses in an oxygen- deficient environment, and has no gas cross-sensitivity (RSL, 2014). The RSL system is totally electrically passive outside the central control unit (CCU), which can be housed in an MSHA-approved explosion-proof (XP) enclosure or in a control room outside of the permissive area. The sensor was tested in dusty and signal loss situations, showing it is tolerant of dust, has functioned at signal losses up to 90%, and was successfully tested in a mine environment for a five-month period (Walsh et al. 2014). This paper describes how the RSL FO sensor is used for testing using smoke and its contaminants for applicability in emergency situations. The testing investigates individual contaminants such as CO2, temperature, and smoke. Each test was performed separately and methane concentration, laser power, and response time data were collected."

The work covered in this report was done to meet the requests from many Government agencies for information on alleviating sludge difficulties in No. 6 (Bunker C) fuel-oil storage tanks. Accumulated sludge at times caused serious loss in tank capacities; pumps became overloaded or lost suction; strainers often required very frequent cleaning; fuel-oil heaters in some instances became fouled and inefficient; and gobs of sludge that passed the strainers interfered with good combustion. The requests also included questions regarding the usefulness in general of oil "additives" for preventing sludge and the relative merits of the many trade-named additives being marketed. Realizing that preventing such difficulties would result in substantial savings to the Government, an investigation was begun with the limited funds avail-able. Although various claims are made for No. 6 fuel-oil additives other than preventing sludge, only an investigation as regards the storage tank-sludge problem has been possible.

Broadly speaking, it may be said that the engineer has two major responsibilities: One is to recommend the choosing of proper machinery and equipment; the other, to assist in the simplification of design, determination of method, and advise about the most suitable material to be used. The products of powder metallurgy enter broadly into both these fields. The oil-cushion, self-lubricating bearing surface on a machine part makes for better machinery and factory equipment, often proves a life-saver in curing difficulties where bearings are overloaded or inaccessible for lubrication, or on installations that with normal practice constitute a problem entailing frequent repairs. On the other hand, other parts may require low porosity approaching solidity. In the second field, powder metallurgy provides many possibilities for improved products, improved performance, solving of technical problems, saving of weight, quiet operation, higher factors of safety, greater flexibility, attractive economies, and so on. Parts We of the automotive industries are making many powdered-metal war-machine parts, both ferrous and nonferrous, including gears, external and internal; ratchets, both external and internal; levers; pillow blocks; sliding blocks; cams; gibs; hubs with external and internal splines, and similar units. Powdered metals play an important part in our war work, as they did in peacetime in the manufacturing of passenger cars and trucks. The art of powder metallurgy is not a panacea. Although on certain parts such operations as turning, boring, facing, reaming, counterboring, milling, countersinking. chamfering, broaching, hobbing, profiling. trepanning, gear cutting, grinding, etc., can be eliminated, there will always be the need for machine tools. Advantages of Powder Metallurgy Simple machining operations often are eliminated by using powdered metal, and also many other intricate operations, some of which are of the type impossible to perform on the most modern production equipment; for instance, an external spline on a flange hub, where the spline must continue to the flange face and at full depth. Another important feature is that some of the machine parts may require a self-lubricating surface at one or more points; for example, proper lubrication of a sliding splined spool, while ordinarily most digcuit, is accomplished automatically with a self-lubricating powdered-metal bearing. Frequently machine parts are made with physical, mechanical and technological advantages unobtainable from cast or forged metals of similar analysis. Thus powder metallurgy offers the designing engineer broader latitude. Similarly, the engineer may take advantage of powder metallurgy in his teamwork with other departments. Another important advantage in powder metallurgy for machine parts is the relatively short time required for tool-up.

Conveyor belts installed in an underground mine can be a potential source of a major fire, thus the need for fife-retardant belting. A Canadian Standard, CAN/CSA-M422-M87, incorporating a small-scale flame test, a drum-friction test, a flame propagation test and an electrical surface-resistance test, has been developed to meet the varied needs of the mining industry. It is recommended that mines use Types A and B belting described in that Standard, because they will have passed the large-scale flame propagation test, rather than Type C, which does not require that test. Belting that has been approved by the U.S.A. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) may be much less fire-retardant than any Canadian approved belting.

The development of roasting technology for the oxidation of sulfides in refractory gold ores is discussed. Case studies covering operations dating from the mid-1930's to the present day are used to illustrate this development. The roasting of ores and concentrates is reviewed and various gas cleaning flowsheets are discussed with particular reference to environmental requirements. A sequence chart is provided to show the development path of a potential roasting project.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is developing a disposal strategy for radioactive wastes, which contain significant amounts of uranium, cesium, and mercury. There are safety and economic incentives for the extraction of these elements before permanent storage in deep underground repositories. In addition, the actinide elements are also an important component in rare earth element (REE) ores and considered as impurities. Actinides separation from REE tailings is a significant concern in order to manage radioactive nuclides. Reprocessing mine wastes may present significant financial and environmental benefits. Experiments were carried out with radioactive cemented wastes (RCW) prepared at CanmetMINING. For all of the tested RCW batches, solubilisation yields are above 97% for Cs and 98% for U and Hg. Sulphuric acid leaching with potassium iodide improved the solubilisation of Hg by oxidation and formation of the tetraiodide complex (e.g. HgI4 2-, Kf = 2.1030). Cs and Hg were removed selectively by using potassium cobalt hexacyanoferrate (KCFC) and Lewatit TP214 ion-exchange resin respectively. U recovery using the chelating resin Lewatit TP260 was the most efficient. The presence of high iodine concentration improved the U uptake by the resin. The best U elution was obtained using 1 M Na2CO3, which resulted in 99% U recovery. U was then precipitated as sodium diuranate. A counter current effluent recirculation was performed successfully on RCW. The process was also applied to submerged tailings collected from two U mines and an REE ore. "The Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia. It is divided into the Duke Mountain Block on the north east and the Dip Slope on the west. Together, these areas cover 39,503 ha of coal licences.The property is underlain by Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous marine and continental sedimentary rocks. Economic coal measures are contained within the Gates Formation. Exploration of the property began in the early I970s, with drilling commencing in 1975. To date, 255 holes have been drilled and nine adits have been driven to recover unoxidized coal samples.The property has a geological resource potential of 2.8 billion tonnes of medium and high-volatile bituminous coal. Medium-volatile bituminous reserves, totalling 68.9 million ROM tonnes at an over-all strip ratio of 6.3:1, have been identified in three pit areas in the Duke Mountain Block.Construction start-up will commence when sales contracts are arranged. The occurrence of zircon in pegmatites of acidic composition is recorded by many observers both in this country and abroad, and they form one of the most important geologic modes of occurrence of the minera1. As is well known, commercially the most important American locality for zircon is near Zirconia in Henderson County, North Carolina, where many tons of the mineral have been obtained from a kaolinized pegmatite dike 100 ft. wide and traced for 1 1/2 miles along the direction of strike N. 50" E. Zircon may be developed in pegmatites as inclusions in the principal rock-forming minerals, chiefly quartz and feldspar, and as a separate megascopic constituent in the form of grains and crystals not exceeding, as a rule, 2 in. in size, and usually smaller. In the Henderson County, North Carolina, pegmatite, zircon occurs in prismatic crystals with pyramidal terminations measuring up to 30 mm. in diameter, associated chiefly with the feldspar. In some of the apatite veins of Canada, which are closely allied to pogmatite dikes, zircon is reported in crystals upward of 6 in. in length and 2 in. and more in thickness. Zircon in large masses occurs in Virginia in the well-known pegmatites near Amelia in Amelia County, and near Gouldin in Hanover County. Both localities are in the middle eastern portion of the Piedmont Plateau province, and are separated by a distance of about 40 miles in a northeast-southwest direction. The rocks of both areas, including the pegmatite bodies, are in an advanced stage of decay, and the hard and moderately fresh rocks are concealed beneath a cover of variable thickness of rock decay derived by the normal processes of weathering.
