A general rate equation is derived for gas -solid reactions in metallurgical processes by considering the contributions of chemical reaction at inter-phase boundaries and diffusion through the solid product layer simultaneously. This equation takes care of the whole range continuously from purely diffusion control to purely chemical reaction control. The parabolic law,' McKewan's equationa derived with the assumption of interface area control and the equation derived by Kawasaki et al. with the assumption of purely diffusion control are found as the limiting cases of the corresponding forms of the general rate equation. Many metallurgical processes involving gas-solid reactions have been extensively studied. The common examples of these processes include the reduction of oxides to metallic products, the roasting of sulfides to oxides or chlorides and the oxidation of metals. Gas-solid reactions consist of at least two kinds of steps; one involves the transport of reactant and product to and from the reaction zone and the other is the chemical reaction taking place at the interphase boundaries. In the limiting cases one or the other of the above mentioned steps will be much slower than the other and is then rate controlling. For example, the oxidation of metals is diffusion controlled and obeys the parabolic law.' On the other hand, if the diffusion rate is much larger than the chemical reaction rate then it will be controlled by the chemical reaction rate. This latter case occurs for the reduction of iron oxides studied by McKewan. If the rate of diffusion and of the chemical reaction have the same order of magnitude, a more detailed analysis is necessary. Thus at the beginning of the reaction when the solid and gaseous reactants are in direct contact, the reaction should be chemical reaction rate controlled as no diffusion process is involved. At the other extreme as the reaction zone moves further into the solid, the diffusion distance becomes greater and the diffusion rate continuously decreases. Eventually, therefore, for a sufficiently large sample the rate must become diffusion controlled. As the transition from one controlling step to the other must be continuous, we cannot describe this transition period by either of the two limiting cases. In this paper the author attempts to derive a general rate equation for gas-solid reaction systems. This is effected by considering the rates of diffusion and chemical reaction simultaneously from the state of pure diffusion control to pure chemical reaction control. I) DERIVATION The system under consideration is made of at least three phases, namely the gaseous one, the solid reactant, and the solid product as shown in Fig. 1. The notations are listed at the end of the paper. The mass transfer process involves the diffusion of reactants and products across the solid product layer. It is reasonable to consider that no chemical reaction will take place in the solid product layer with respect to both gaseous reactant and product. For the characteristics of local equilibrium of the system, the diffusion process is really in a quasi-steady-state. It will be proved in the following paragraphs. Then we can invoke the law of conservation of mass valid for all chemical species passing through the layer. SEVEN years ago, Dr. S. L. Hoyt1 presented a masterful discussion of the hard metal carbides and cemented tungsten carbide. His lecture summarized most of the data then available in the field; many of the details relating to the production, properties and structure of cemented tungsten carbide had never been previously published, for, in fact, this information was only then being acquired. During the intervening years, the cemented carbides have assumed a place of real importance in the commercial field, with an ever widening variety of applications due to constant improvement in the control of production technique and the unremitting search for new compositions that might better the performance of the alloys in one or another type of service. The most recent summary of production methods, properties and guides for the successful application of the cemented carbides appears in the 1936 edition of the Metals Handbook. Of necessity, much detailed information relating to structures and physical properties is not included in such a summary, and it is with such details that the present discussion is concerned. STEPS IN PREPARATION While the past 25 years have contributed a valuable store of working knowledge in the field of powder metallurgy, many of the process controls are derived entirely from experience and are not as yet finally explained by a specific physical or chemical phenomenon. For most of the cemented carbides such difficulties are aggravated by our lack of knowledge not only of the complex alloy systems involved, but also by the possible changes in structure and even in composition which may accompany variations in temperature, heating time, and furnace atmospheres. HAVING had considerable practical experience in the management of colored mining labor in the South, I have thought a few observations upon its peculiarities might interest those not personally familiar with it. In mining, as in all other departments throughout the South, this class of labor is largely in excess of any other; and its characteristics need to be known and duly taken into consideration by those who may be charged with the conduct of southern enterprises. The colored laborers are fervently religious, intensely superstitious, improvident, and usually good natured and happy,—in a word, they are like children. That strong religious emotions do not involve necessarily a moral sense highly developed in the direction of ethics, is shown in the propensity of the colored population for chickenstealing, and in the brutal fights and other outbreaks of which they are not infrequeutly guilty, upon any slight provocation. It is only fair to say, however, that many individuals among them are in the highest degree steady and trustworthy. To one accustomed to seeing white miners at work in the middle, northern or western States, the colored miners seem somewhat slow and lazy. But their efficiency is greater than it appears to be. Titanium (Ti) metal production from titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) using magnesium (Mg) as a reducing agent is the well-known Kroll process. A chloride route is used to avoid oxidation of the titanium sponge. The sponge is consolidated into ingots and can then be made into powder by melting and atomizing or by hydriding/dehydriding. Attempts at direct powder production have met with difficulties, including low Ti yield and the formation of very fine particles (particles between 25-100 µm are desired). This paper discusses two methods to produce Ti powder in a molten salt medium using magnesium powder as a starting material instead of a pool of molten magnesium. The first method is a direct reduction of gaseous TiCl4 injected in the melt with the magnesium powder in suspension in the molten salt. The second method is a two stage TiCl4 reduction reaction where recycled Ti was used to form titanium dichloride (TiCl2) in the first stage followed by addition of magnesium powder into molten salt in the second stage. A correlation between Ti yield and processing variables such as TiCl4 to Mg ratio, Mg particle size, TiCl2 concentration in the melt, and reaction temperature was studied. The Ti powder formed was also analyzed for particle size distribution. Despite challenges and difficulties encountered, this paper shows some promising results which could provide guidance to others working on direct Ti powder production.

Success has been achieved in developing mathematical models of rod mills, ball mills and recently to a limited extent autogenous grinding mills. There is also considerable activity in the development of mathematical models of various mineral concentration opera¬tions, such as flotation, magnetic separation and electrostatic concentration. However, at present there is a technological gap which hinders the integration of both size reduction and mineral concentration models into an overall process simulation model. This gap exists because size reduction models have been aimed at describing the size of the product and have not dealt with the equally important problem of identifying the product composition in each size fraction. Without this information the concentration model is ineffective. This situation is especially critical in the simulation of the magnetite-taconite beneficiation process, where a portion of the ore is rejected from the process following each stage of size reduction. Consideration has therefore been given to the merging of a size reduction model and a mineral liberation model to permit prediction of mineral composition as a function of size. The results of this integration of size reduction and mineral liberation models are discussed from both theoretical and practical viewpoints using batch grinding data for a magnetite iron formation sample as a demonstration vehicle.

IT is notable that the first large-scale mine operation equipped entirely with detachable bits was the Badger State mine of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Butte, Montana, just 30 years ago. This mine in 1922 was producing approximately 1200 tons of ore per day. Much of the data presented in C. L. Berrien's article' describing the development and installation of the Hawkesworth detachable drill bit were obtained from these operations. As in any pioneering effort, no precedent existed and many difficult problems required solution, so that the changeover to detachable bits at all Butte hill mines was not completed for 6 years. There was widespread disbelief as to the probable efficiency of the new installation. Some attempts were made in 1931 by the owners of the Hawkesworth patents to interest Ontario gold mine operators in the bit. These efforts were not successful, but they undoubtedly stimulated thinking which resulted in the invention and patenting of several well-known Canadian detachable bits, one of which is now a widely used throwaway bit. The success of the Butte installation also led to the development of the threaded type of bit connections by several well-known manufacturers, and in 1935 these bits were introduced to the mining industry on a national scale. The original Hawkesworth bit was not provided with a water hole but, depended upon water passing through the clearance opening between the tongue in the bit and the groove in the rod to flush cuttings from the drill hole, see Fig. 1. In December 1935 it was found that this method of introducing drilling water to the bit face resulted in high dust counts. To correct this a water hole was drilled on the central axis of the bit, passing through the tongue. Unfortunately, quenching water would rise through the small water hole, spot-hardening the tongue to cause breakage, never completely eliminated. In the fall of 1936 large-scale tests indicated that savings would be effected by use of a threaded type of bit, which was therefore adopted as standard for all Butte mines. This type of bit was used until 1947, when it was superseded by a one-use slip-on type. Since the first use of the Hawkesworth bit every detachable bit of importance has been investigated, and where advantages which might reduce costs or increase efficiency were indicated, substantial tests of the bit were carried on in the Butte mines. When tests demonstrated the advisability of changing from one kind of detachable bit to another the change was made at one level or in one area each day until the new rod and bit equipment was used throughout the mine. This involved a minimum of cost and disruption of drilling. Intelligent selection of a detachable bit to obtain optimum results requires careful consideration to achieve a balance between the three principal types of equipment used in the drilling process: 1—drill bits, 2—drill steel, and 3—drilling machines. Optimum results imply maximum output and minimum cost per unit of output. Since every rock type differs in drillability and it is generally impractical to provide equipment for more than one or two types of rock which may occur in one operation, selection of equipment must encompass average drilling conditions. However, on exceptional occasions several widely differing conditions may make it mandatory to provide equipment best suited to each condition. The choice of rock-drilling equipment is a most controversial subject and one that is further complicated by unreliable and frequently misleading performance claims. Small operators without the means for making accurate evaluations of equipment frequently suffer from these over-enthusiastic claims. It is apparent from experience in rock drilling throughout the world that rock drillability is not alike in any two places, and that selection of proper equipment can only be made after conducting thorough trials of various types of equipment. Some recent drilling tests in tactite and hornstone at the Darwin, California mine of the Anaconda Co. present some interesting clues on rock drillability. Microscopic examination of thin sections of these rocks reveals that mineral composition and rock texture are equally important in governing drillability. The Darwin hornstone is at times so abrasive that the carbide bit cutting edges become flattened to 3/32 in. in 2 to 4 ft of drilling, and some carbide bits were dulled to this point after 9 to 10 in. of drilling. This wear was determined to be the proper point for resharpening to eliminate carbide insert breakage or breakage of the steel rod when drilling with 1½ to 1?-in. bits, with a drifter of 2 3/4-in. diam and 90 to 100 psi air pressure, see Supplement A. Before considering the merits of various bit designs it may be well to review the mechanics of drilling rock with percussion drills. A sharp bit cuts by penetration and chipping. The case history, which is the subject of this paper, involves the expansion of a lime plant in Texas. The major new production unit is to be a 545.45 tonne per day coal fired rotary kiln. Auxiliary facilities include additional quarry haulage equipment, modifications to the crushing plant, a hydrator, storage facilities, and a loading system. The existing plant consists of a high calcium limestone quarry, two coal fired rotary and 10 gas fired shaft kilns, nth crushing, screening, stockpiling, hydrating, storing and loading facilities. The proposed modification would increase quarry volume from 545,000 tonnes per year to 805,000 tonnes per year. The plan also includes the addition of dolomitic lime to the product line which requires the purchase and handling of 186,000 tonnes of screened, washed dolomite yearly. A decision to undertake such an expansion was previously a simple and straight forward process. Such a decision now faces a major and complicating obstacle which can delay the project, raise the expected cost, or prevent it entirely.

"Radium is selectively leachable from uranium ores with various types of lixiviants. Among a number of lixiviants tried on Midwest Lake uranium ore, KCl provided the highest per cent of radium extraction (60%-65%). Leach results further confirmed that a certain portion of Ra is not amenable to KCl leaching. More than 99% of the dissolved radium could be removed by treating the KCl leach liquor with barite or with radium selective complex resin (XFS-43230 resin of Dow Chemical Inc.) or by precipitating as RaBaSO4. Uranium leachings from the Ra-preleached uranium ores indicate that radium leaching prior to uranium may be applied as an extension to the conventional or alternative (i.e. acid chloride) leaching process of uranium ores in order to yield environmentally acceptable tailings (in terms of radium in the solids).IntroductionAt present, radium is considered as an environmental issue, particularly for uranium ore mine mill operations, rather than a commercial commodity. Radium was once a highly priced commodity ($180/mg during the first great war) but now it hardly has any commercial value. Its principal applications were in the field of cancer treatment and in the manufacturing of lwninous dials for watches. Nowadays readily-available synthetic radioisotopes are finding applications in place of radium.Because of scarcity and high toxicity, further commercial applications have never been explored.Radium was first discovered and extracted from uranium ore by P. Curie, M. Curie and G. Bement in 1898. Radium is widely distributed in nature but in exceedingly minute quantities. It is one of the daughter products of uranium or thorium and its maximum concentration is 3.3 x 10-7 part/part of U(21). Because of its short half-life (approximately 1620 years) in a geological time scale, its occurrence in nature as a distinct mineral is most unlikely.The details of the original radium leaching process developed by the Curies and Bernont are in the literature. This process essentially involved the roasting of uranium ore with caustic. carbonate followed by sulphuric acid leaching. The precipitated RaSO4 and BaS04 were treated with boiling Na2CO3 to convert them into the corresponding carbonates which later were dissolved in HCI. RaCI2 and Ba02 were separated and concentrated from the chloride liquor by fractional crystallization. But, in the course of time several modifications were made or proposed to the original process. Regardless of the process employed 226Ra extraction from the uranium ore was seldom better than 90%, and further as much as 20% 2URa loss took place during the concentration and purification process."

The New Zealand experience has shown that the trend in technologi- cal change in gold extraction can be characterised by a systems approach which grows progressively broader with advances in understanding and allowing for an increasing number of factors. The Australian experience has demonstrated that the elements of developing an exportable process include allowing projects to prolifer- ate where substantial entrepreneural involvement is likely to occur. In both countries useful technological breakthroughs were invariably discarded when first tried at operations not well established and under great pressure of achieving and maintaining production. It required the efforts of persistent individuals at operations which had become bedded in and profitable, to follow the initial work up and commercialise it.

My connection, under a commission from the Councils and Board of School Control of the city of Scranton, Pa., with a recent investigation of mine-caves and the resultant damages to surface-improvements, has led to the preparation, at the invitation of our Secretary, of the present paper. It is notorious that there are, in the anthracite-fields, frequent subsidences of the surface, due to the removal of the coal beneath. No particular attention is paid to such occurrences, unless they happen to injure surface-improvements. Many caves have happened in Scranton and its viciuity, which hare excited but little remark, since they have generally caused no serious damage. In August, 1909, a cave occurred in the Hyde Park section of the city, generally known as the West Side, which nearly destroyed school-house No. 16 and considerable adjacent property. Fortunately, there were no pupils in the building at the time; but the thought of the possible result, had the usual number of pupils and teachers been present, aroused the public to the gravity of the situation; and the School Board employed engineers to investigate the case. Two reports were made by separate sets of engineers, which differed in some particulars. These differences were pointed out in the public press and magnified, and the consequent agitation of the subject was taken up and greatly exaggerated by some of the metropolitan newspapers, giving to uninformed people the very erroneous impression that the whole city of Scranton was in danger of sinking into the bowels of the earth. All this tended to affect the credit of the city and to depress real-estate values. The matter was considered at a joint meeting of the Board of Trade, the Councils, and the School Board. The Hon. J. "MINING operations at the Star Key Mine provided an example of a small-scale prairie-type coal mine that employed several interesting procedures and achieved good productivity with low capital expenditures. The mine was located about 11 miles north of the city of Edmonton, on the north side of the Sturgeon River valley. It opened in 1945 and operated until 1979. Output in the winters reached about 500 tons a day in the late 1940s, but in the spring and summer periods activity was usually limited to only servicing and development work. In the later years of the mine's life sales fell to less than 100 tons per day. Most of its output was bought for domestic use in furnaces and stoves so production of large sizes was desired. A modest market for stoker coal did exist for a time. Screenings (-5 / 8 in.) were sold to the city's power plant until it converted to natural gas and were also used for thawing frozen ground for work on pipelines. These markets were comparatively small and the small sizes did not command as high a price as did the larger sizes. However the extension of natural gas services to rural markets cut into the domestic heating market and finally led to closure of the mine. The coal was strong when freshly mined, but because of its high inherent moisture content, about 25%, it did not store well on surface but tended to disintegrate. It was of subbituminous Crank with a heating value of about 8000 Btu per pound and burned with a clean flame. The seam mined was in the Edmonton Formation, of Upper Cretaceous age, at a depth of 60 to 80 ft below the surface. The seam in the mine area was about 11 feet in thickness but thinned gradually to the north and south and split to the west (1). It was approximately horizontal but gentle rolls in the floor of several feet in height necessitated brushing in places to produce suitable haulage grades. The floor material was of bone and clay, overlying a thin layer of coal. Above the seam there were only a few feet of mudstones and weak sandy shales while the remainder of the overburden was clay and unconsolidated glacial till and surface soil. Because of the soft floor and weak roof material the miners usually left about a foot of coal in the floor to provide a firm working surface and about a foot of coal above the rooms and two feet of coal above the entries to provide a competent roof."

Interlocking H sections with deep webs and high section modulus are being used for cofferdams and shore enclosures where pressures are excessive. The H sections can be as much as a meter deep; they can be used as continuous interlocked wall. A steel saving alternate is spacing the H and driving deep for stability then filling between with shorter interlocking sheet piles. Templates provide for exact positioning.

The Williams Mine mines and mills 6000 t/d (6600 stp’d) of gold ore using SAG/ball milling, leaching and CIP, electrowinning and refining. Electrowinning, high-pressure cathode washing, filtering, retorting and refining are based around the use of knitted stainless steel mesh cathodes. Their primary advantage over conventional steel wool cathodes is that electrowon gold can be washed off and the cathode can then be reused. Typically, the knitted cathodes have a useful life of up to 15 months. Gold production of up to15 t/month (50,000 oz/month) is easily processed with this system. Presented is a description of this operation, including a review of the equipment and performance data.

Unfortunately, the consultant is generally faced with having never seen the project, or preparing for litigation three or more years after blasting was completed. Under these circumstances, he must rely totally on blaster's logs and other contemporaneous records to conduct a meaningful evaluation.

Laboratory test results are presented for the determination of elastic modulus made with the NX borehole jack. Determinations were made in massive pieces of aluminum so as to satisfy conditions of linear elasticity, homogeneity, and isotropy. Results indicate a large discrepancy (approximately 200 percent) betwen material modulus as determined by laboratory block-loading tests and that indicated by the jack under relatively ideal circumstances. Effects due to interface friction, finite block size, incomplete plate-bore contact, and other factors were examined and found not to be significant. Finite element results indicate that assumed loading conditions for the jack differ from those actually occurring, at least in materials of high elastic modulus (approximately 10 million psi), such as quartzite.

Maps and Mining Data for the Library. I suggest that the Institute Library can increase its usefulness by systematically soliciting from the engineers and mining companies all published reports and maps, and parts of reports and records, not of a private or confidential nature. If this is done an engineer assigned to report on a well-known property or district may depend on finding at the library a large amount of preliminary data and general information from these official and engineering reports relating to his prospective investigation. In many mining reports a large part of the report is of a general technical and scientific character, and there could be no good objection on the part of either the engineer, or his client to making such information thus of record. I believe there would be a great deal of information furnished by the engineers if they were properly solicited under this plan. I have found on different occasions that much work could be saved by such records now in the Library. The plan would also have the advantage of keeping the Library in closer touch with the active engineers, a feature to be desired. I also have in mind that the Library should undertake to collect all the prospectuses and financial literature which is issued in connection with mining. Of course a great deal of this is unreliable, but even this is valuable for record in the matter of legal and other investigations. I shall be glad to co-operate with you, and do anything I can to develop more in detail the general ideas above noted. Early work on chemical precipitation of metals from metal salt solutions is reviewed. The chemistry and thermodynamics of precipitating copper, nickel, cobalt, and cadmium metals by reaction with hydrogen are discussed. Mechanisms of metal precipitation, nucleation, growth, and agglomeration are reviewed, as well as some solubility phenomena of gases and solids at elevated temperatures. Experimental data presented deal mainly with the reaction of copper sulfate solution with Hz.
