THIS tunnel, which is an adit 7000 ft. long, was undertaken by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Limited to connect its treatment works with the North Lyell mine at depth, with a view to effecting economies in transport and drainage. The work was carried out at high pressure throughout from both ends, and although the ground in the mine end was intensely hard, good progress was made, and driving was completed in less than fifteen months.The Mount Lyell mining field is situated in the west of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland, the only means of access being the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway which connects with the Government railway system of the State at Strahan, on Macquarie Harbour. The region is mountainous, and presents many difficulties to the road and railway engineer. The West Coast range running north and south in a succession of bold prominences, which rise up to 4000 ft. above sea-level, forms the backbone of the district, and on its foothills the Mount Lyell mines are situated. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating technologies that could be used to detect objects, small vehicles, and pedestrian workers that may be in the blind areas of haulage equipment used in mining and construction. A detection system that warns the equipment operator that there is an obstacle nearby could prevent collisions and save many lives each year. One popular technology for collision warning systems is radar. Several different types of radar have been tested in the laboratory and on mining equipment. Early in the study, questions arose concerning the best way to test radar systems. Many factors affect the performance of radar, including the size, shape, and composition of the object that is to be detected; the height of the radar antenna(s); and the relative motion of the radar system and/or object. This report discusses several different test procedures and test targets and recommends methods to determine how effective a radar system will be in detecting a person near heavy equipment.

It is a great honour to address our Institute as President, but the choice of a suitable subject was not an easy one. In the past when the presidential address was given at an annual conference the subject usually related to the conference or industry concerned; more recently the subjects have been more philosophical and this is a distinct advantage to me.I appreciate that I am addressing an informed audience and I am sure' that you are well advised in many of the points that I hope to leave with you. Unlike the specialist who gets to know more and more about less and less and eventually knows everything about nothing, I am one of the group who gets to know less and less about more and more and eventually knows nothing about everything.I hope you will appreciate this point whilst you are listening to me.In recent years I have been closely associated with the problem that troubles most governments of our time: the competition of many groups of differing backgrounds for the land that is available to the nation.This is of particular interest to the industry with which we are concerned as it is of critical importance to the discovery and development of future reserves of minerals and metals. Part of my daily task is involved with the administration of legislation for mining operations and the conditions under which such operations may be undertaken, in implementing government policies relating to mining, and in designing and administering legislationdirected to safety and health in mines.Most of our members are involved in exploration or in day-to-day problems associated with the production of minerals or the management of companies in these pursuits and would be aware of many of the conflicting viewpoints on priorities.F. F. Espie in his presidential address of 1975 'On being a minority', made the point that our Institute found that the mining industry had a great communication 'Problem with the Australian people.I believe that this is one of our major problems.

This paper is one of a series pre-pared to study the role of fuels and reductants in metallurgical processes, especially from the viewpoint of Canadian requirements. The object of these studies is to provide a reason-ably authoritative interpretation on the interrelation of fuels in light of the considerable changes that have taken place in the Canadian energy field during the past few years. Previous papers in this group have dealt with the problem generally, and specifically in terms of the development of the iron and steel industry of Western Canada. These latter papers, presented at the Symposium on Iron and Steel in Western Canada held in Edmonton, Alberta, on September 8-9, 1959, surveyed the ferrous processes of interest for use in Wes tern Canada, especially with regard to solid fuel requirements. At that time it was evident that there was a need for a similar study of the fuels aspect of the non-ferrous metals industry.

"Placer gold mineralizations have been observed in the north-eastern parts of Greece. Some of them have been at first evaluated to be of special interest so, exploration campaigns have been designed and carried out. Among the other exploration techniques applied on the sites of interest, drilling was the one to give the detailed information and data for the evaluation of the deposits. Having collected the data from trenching and two consecutive drilling campaigns, they were processed geostatistically to estimate the ore reserves and therefore the economic interest of the deposits. The latter was done by using exploitability indices, which would give a rough idea whether the deposits were economically feasible. A small number of such deposits have been spotted in the area and have been explored and evaluated as above. The present paper deals with the most important of them, giving all the process followed and the results derived from the exploration carried out."

The flotation behavior of the. green algae Chlorella vulgaris and a wild Chlamydomonas spp. was studied in the presence of Zn(II) using dodecylammonium chloride as collector. At about pH 6. both organisms readily float as amine concentration approaches lx10-3 kmol/m3. In addition, electrokinetic measurements were made on the organisms as a function of pH in both the presence and absence of Zn(II). It was found that the Zn(II) has a considerably greater effect on the zeta potential of C. vulgaris than on Chlamydomonas. Zn(II) adsorption studies also indicated that C. vulgaris is able to accumulate more Zn from solution than the Chlamydomonas.

A continuous casting machine, of the Concast curved mould design casting billets in four strands, was commissioned at the Newcastle Works of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., in November, 1967. Quality assessment of early casts from this plant indicated that steel cleanliness was sometimes inferior to that of equival- ent ingot cast steel. Extensive trials to develop a modified deoxidation technique were not successful in improving clean- liness to the desired level. A "contra-flow" gas shroud, to cover the steel stream between the tundish and the mould, was developed, and proved successful in achieving the required levels of product cleanliness. The inclusion content of six grades of steel ranging in carbon content from 0.10 to 0.70 per cent is examined, and an attempt is made to explain theoretically some of the results obtained.

Over the last 60 years many different processes were conceived to reduce the cost of titanium produced by the Kroll process. However, success eluded all previous efforts, which were consequently terminated in periods of economic downturn. Recently, the grow thin demand for titanium and the high cost of producing the metal again sparked renewed attempts in various parts of the world to replace the antiquated Kroll process with a more efficient route. The different options to produce titanium are reviewed, classified and evaluated in terms of the fundamentals underlying the technologies, and it is shown that the options considered to be the most likely to replace the Kroll process, are continuous processes to reduce TiCl4 metallo-thermically to titanium powder. Of these, continuous magnesio-thermic reduction of TiCl4 would conceptually result in the lowest-cost and highest-value product. However, when considering by-product salt removal from the titanium product and recycling of the salt as well, sodio-thermic reduction of TiCl4 is better.

A liquid which is rich in oxygen (and silicon) develops at steel rolling temperatures in resulfurized and plain-carbon steels. This liquid fluxes solid manganese sulfide. The composition of the liquid and the resulting microstructures vary with the manganese/silicon/oxygen ratios in the steel. The observations and conclusions zuhich are presented are used 1) to suggest a mechanism for MnS deformation in resulfurized steels, and 2) to rationulize hot-shortness anomalies between plain-carbon and resulfurized steels. 1 HIS is a summary of the dependence of sulfide inclusion microstructures upon steel composition, and an interpretation of the behavior of sulfide inclusions at steel-rolling temperatures. Sulfide inclusions are known to have several metallurgical effects upon steel. Their effects upon hot-shortness are best appreciated. Although hot-shortness is well known, it is questionable whether its mechanism is fully understood because there are several anomalies in our interpretation. For example, why should not high sulfur contents produce extensive hot-shortness in free-machining steels ? A second metallurgical consequence of sulfide inclusions appears because sulfide inclusions improve machinability. Furthermore, globular inclu- sions are to be desired over elongated inclusions. To date, we know that lower silicon contents (< 0.010 pct) favor the globular sulfides, but we do not know why this interrelationship between silicon content and inclusion shape exists. Finally, the evidence is strong that the surface quality of a hot-rolled steel is particularly sensitive to the sulfur content. SUMMARY OF PREVIOUS WORK The role of sulfur in hot-shortness was first suggested during the past century. It is uncertain who was the first to conclude that sulfur was less deleterious in the presence of manganese, and that manganese altered the sulfide phase from a liquid FeS to a solid MnS at steel-rolling temperatures. However, Urban and chipman&apos; emphasized that liquid FeS may accumulate as an interdendritic film during solidification. More recently, Keh and Van lack&apos; showed that the intergranular liquid does not completely surround the metal grains at all rolling temperatures. It has been said on many occasions that æthe future of the mining industry of Australia, and indeed the world, lies in the hands of the studentsÆ. As a student, this can be a daunting, yet very exciting, statement. If nothing else, it is a direct challenge to the student body of the mining industry to take responsibility for its direction æafter 2000Æ. However, for the students to embrace this challenge, some responsibility must be borne by the universities and the industry itself to provide some direction and encouragement. Perhaps, therefore, the real challenge is to find the right balance between students, industry and education to best prepare the students for a career in the mining industry. The future industry will demand students who are capable and willing to adapt to change and technology and able to exert the vision and leadership required to ensure the mining industry continues to thrive well into the next century.

SELECTION of an alloy steel for a heat-treated article has been facilitated by methods for the calculation of hardenability,1 as-quenched hardness,2,3 and tempered tensile strength.4 Ductility and toughness may also be estimated if the steel is completely hardened on quenching,5,6 and the present study was carried out in order to develop a basis for estimating the Izod impact strength of partially hardened steel. The investigation was directed toward the prediction of Izod impact strength in steels of normal commercial quality without consideration of special compositions or heat-treatments that might produce abnormal brittleness. It was found that Izod impact strength of alloy steel is controlled by hardness, degree of hardening on quenching, and grain size. In fine-grained steels the impact strength for any given degree of hardening is inversely proportional to the tempered Rockwell C hardness, and the relation of impact strength to hardness is lowered by incomplete hardening. Calculation of the tensile strength and impact strength of heat-treating steels has shown that, except at very high strengths, tensile strength is raised by alloys without loss of impact strength whereas the tensile strength gained by higher carbon contents tends to be accompanied by a disproportionate loss of toughness. Plain carbon steels give relatively low and unpredictable impact strength. The calculation is sufficiently accurate to be helpful in the selection of alloy steel, and common grades of alloy steel have been evaluated with respect to combinations of tensile strength and impact strength attainable after heat-treatment in sections from I to 4 in. in diameter. PROCEDURE The study of the relation of hardness to impact strength was based on test data derived from 24 heats from four producers. The steels included the following SAE and AISI compositions: 1020, 1o30, 1040, 1340, 3310, 3316, 4320, 4330, 4340, 8620, 8630, 8640, 8720, 8730, 8740, 9310, 9317, 9440, 9917 and three high-alloy chromium-nickel-molybdenum steels. As far as is known, the steels tested were of normal commercial quality. They were supplied in 4-in. sections, which were forged to smaller sizes, prenormalized, and machined to final dimensions. Heat-treatment was carried out by heating to the usual austenitizing temperature for the grade of steel, holding for one hour per inch of thickness and quenching in still oil at room temperature. Previous work had indicated that this quenching treatment approximates a severity of H = 0.35. The bars were tempered as follows: ½ in., I in., and I 5/8 in., 2 hr; 2 ½ in., 3 hr; 4 in., 5 hr. In thermodynamic studies of gas mixtures and liquid solutions, the respective problems have been greatly simplified by the use of two general limiting laws; Dalton&apos;s law of partial pressures and Raoult&apos;s law. It is generally recognized that these two laws have a common physical and chemical basis which may be stated as follows: The law may be expected to be strictly valid only for systems in which the different molecular species are so nearly the same in their physical and chemical properties that a molecule is unable to recognize whether its neighbor is one of its own kind or not. Positive and negative deviations from both laws are frequently encountered. The occurrence of negative deviations in both gases and liquids is ascribed to attractive forces which, in the more extreme cases, may be so large in magnitude and so highly specific in character as to lead to the formation of definite chemical compounds. Positive deviations in gases develop only at higher pressures where the intermolecular distances are so decreased that factors such as molecular size and shape, which ultimately become concerned with the repulsive forces, come into play. In liquid mixtures, positive deviations are generally considered as due to differences in the symmetrical (nonpolar) fields of force which surround the various molecular species and which are supposed to give rise to a tendency for each species to associate with its own kind and thus to "squeeze out" the other variety. Fundamentally this also involves the existence of repulsive forces between unlike molecules. If the fields of force are unsymmetrical (polar) a tendency towards compound formation results. Stated in more exact terms, strict adherence to the law means that the "activity" (or any adequate measure of this quantity) of a component in a mixture is a linear function of the molecular (or atomic) fraction of that component between the mol fraction limits 0 and 1. A positive deviation means that the activity is greater than corresponds to the law; a negative deviation that the activity is less. An overview of the problems encountered the electrorefining of copper anodes containing high levels of nickel and antimony is presented. Our investigations have been focusing on the passivation behaviour of the anodes with high contents of Ni, Sb, Sn, and Pb, the formations of kupferglimmer and floating slimes. The results of linear voltammetry, chronopotentiometry and electrolysis test revealed a noticeable lower resistance of the anodes to passivation in comparison to those with lower contents of Ni, Sb, Sn, and Pb. Anode containing kupferglimmer exhibited oxygen gas evolution during the passivation state. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) indicated that tin can replace and/or join antimony in the kupferglimmer structure. Under specified experimental conditions, floating slimes precipitations took place with high Ni, Sb, Sn, and Pb anodes prior to the end of one anode period.

In this paper, life cycle assessment methodology has been used to assess the variations in water use associated with different metal production and processing routes and provide insights into the value derived from water usage in the minerals sector. Using water consumption data derived from the literature it has been shown that the æcradle-to-gateÆ water consumption (or embodied water) for production of the various metals considered in the study ranged from 2.9 m3/t for steel up to 252 087 m3/t for gold. The results largely reflect the grade of the initial ore used to produce each metal, and can be approximated by the following equation:W = 167.7 G - 0.9039 where: W = embodied water (m3/t refined metal) G = grade of ore used to produce metal (per cent metal) The study showed that indirect water consumption in the metal production life cycle, in particular that due to electricity generation, can make a significant contribution to the embodied water value, eg aluminium production. When expressed in terms of m3/t ore, the results for all metals considered indicated that the embodied water is roughly, on average, three times the water consumption of the mining and concentration stage. It was also shown that the economic value per m3 of water consumed for the minerals industry exceeds that for the agricultural and industrial sectors, supporting the view that allocating water resources to the minerals industry has a strong underlying economic basis. Water reforms currently taking place in Australia aim to address issues such as competition for water access, reduced security of supply and increase in cost. Consequently the minerals industry, along with others, can be expected to come under increasing pressure to reduce fresh or raw water use and to integrate water use across sectors. While water recycling is an obvious candidate to help reduce water consumption in the minerals industry, issues such as water quality, among others, will influence the extent to which this can be achieved. In addition, wastewater volumes can be minimised using techniques such as pinch analysis to establish and use the minimum water requirement for the process. The use of dry or near-dry processing technologies, for which the demand for water is small or zero, may be a more radical solution to the water consumption problem; however, it is possible that the introduction of dry processing would bring with it a new set of problems, including dust.

Review of the mining legislation in New Zealand has coincided with a number of radical changes. These include a redirection of economic management towards a more open and competitive economy; major reform of the state sector aimed at greater efficiency, transparency and accountability; a new environmental administration; and a fundamental review of policy for management of natural and physical resources. These changes provide an opportunity to develop a consistent and coherent approach in the minerals and related statutes that will achieve objectives of economic efficiency, equity, practicability and good environmental management.

Transport infrastructure constitutes, since always, an essential link between regions, countries and continents, for economical, commercial and human purposes. Permanently growing mobility needs, which are encountered in the whole world, lead to a more and more clear necessity to increase and modernise these transport infrastructures, as well in quantity as in quality, for all transport modes, and for all what is able to be transported, from people to consumption goods and energy. With only very few exceptions, transport infrastructure achievements have for long been the concern of the sole public authorities, at the various levels, which put them, mostly free of charge or at very low cost, at the disposition of the user or the customer.
