"The Voisey’s Bay mill processes a high-grade pentlandite and chalcopyrite ore in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. From 1994 to 1997, circuit development focused on making a 14% nickel concentrate. MOST important of the naturalcalcium silicates is the meta¬silicate, CaSi03, known as wollastonite, after W. H. Wollaston. A large deposit of this mineral was dis¬covered some seven years ago near Code Siding, Rademacher mining dis¬trict, Kern County, Calif., the deposit being some 7500 ft. long and of an average width of 300 ft. It consists of a series of small domes striking north¬erly and southerly and with a dip of 81 ° to the south. This deposit was opened up by a series of small quarries showing a potential tonnage of 12,000,¬000 tons, allowing of cheap mining and transportation, the Southern Pa¬cific R.R. spur track being one mile north of the workings. Numerous sam¬ples taken from different points on the deposit, tested by Mr. Brinker, of the California Testing Laboratories, Los Angeles, showed an average as fol¬lows: Per Cent Silica (SiO2) 47.12 Lime (CaO) 41.72 Magnesia (MgO) 2.72 Alkalies (R,0) Trace Iron (Fe.,O,) 1.60 whereas the theoretical composition of of wollastonite, as given by William Shirley Bayley, is as follows: Silica 51.75 Lime 45.25 The tonnage and purity of this de¬posit led to investigations into its com¬mercial development. Early work es¬tablished the fact that wollastonite was ideal for the manufacture of a tough, almost unbreakable, glass similar to Pyrex. It also established the fact that wollastonite was particularly adapted for use in the manufacture of mineral wool, towards which further research was then directed. Briefly, the prin¬cipal advantages were the substantially unvarying chemical composition of the naturally occurring mineral and its characteristic of being relatively flexi¬ble and highly resilient when fused into a glass. A mineral wool produced therefrom is thus not only of highly uniform composition and color but is most desirable because of the high mechanical strength and length of the individual fibers constituting the wool. It is well known that mineral wool may be prepared by melting a suitable charge of raw material and then intro¬ducing a stream of a suitable fluid, such as air or steam, into a stream of the molten raw material. By this means the molten material is blown into threads or fibers, which are collected in a suitable chamber similar to a tun¬nel, from which they are removed from time to time or continuously. The concept of using a phase that is liquid at service temperatures as a component of coatings for refractory metals has been described. The liquid, an alloy of gold and silicon, is retained on a molybdemum surface by a capillary system made of molybdenum disilicide. The coating has the advantage of good thermal shock and has a self-henling chracteristic. In order for highly stressed structures to exceed a service temperature of 2000°F, it has become apparent that a development that does not depend on the traditional iron, cobalt, or nickel-base alloy is needed. Alloys of the refractory metals, i.e., molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum. niobium (colum-bium), and rhenium are potentially useful at extremely high temperatures that more conventional alloys would never be expected to achieve. A new alloy of molybdenum has become available that has a 100-hr rupture strength of 35,000 psi at 2200°F.1 As a result of this work, it may be assumed that a material with adequate mechanical properties at 2200?F is now available. Unfortunately, this alloy and all other known alloys of the refractory metals suffer from not being; serviceable in an oxidizing atmosphere for a very long time. In order to permit general use of refractory metals at high temperatures, it is necessary to prevent destructive oxidation by appropriate alloying or by protective coatings. The liquid phase coating reported here is representative of a concept for the protection of metals that permits higher service temperatures and introduces a new group of materials for selection as coatings. Coating Requirements—Service conditions that represent potential applications for refractory metals vary considerably: however, it is possible to consider two conditions that are usually present. The refractory metal1 component must be heated to the service temperature at least once and usually frequently. When a solid coating is used, usually the coating and basis metal do not have the same coefficient of expansion. This difference causes thermal stress in the coating that is aggravated by rapid heating and cooling and eventually causes coating failure. The second consideration is the probability that there will be damage to the coating by some environmental condition. In jet engines, for example, it is expected that large particles, stones, metal parts, and so forth, will strike a bucket at high speed and cut a hole in the coating. In addition to the above considerations, the coating must also have other fundamental properties. Obviously, it must be oxidation resistant. In addi- tion, it must prevent permeation of oxygen and subsequent oxidation of the basis metal at the interface. Also, diffusion of the basis metal to the outside surface and subsequent oxidation there must be prevented. Finally, the coating must not react with the basis metal to form a weak bond at the interface. It should be noted that the coating need not support a load: it must only remain intact. Liquid Phase Coating Design Factors—In the use of a liquid as a principal coating constituent, it would be expected that the two service conditions mentioned above would be satisfied. A liquid would flow under the influence of the thermal strain developed by coating-basis metal expansion mismatch such that failure from this source would not be expected to occur. It is also probable that the ability of a liquid to flow would provide a self-healing effect. Thus, damage caused by particles in the atmosphere would be repaired. A third advantage is evident in that vapor pressure rather than melting point limits the service temperature. This latter advantage permits use of low melting but oxidation resistant metals such as gold or copper that would be quite useless if the solid state was required. A low viscosity liquid alone. however, is a totally unsuitable coating because it will simply flow off a component, particularly under the influence of a high acceleration field. A method of preventing liquid loss must be devised. In this case, it is desired that the liquid have a low viscosity so that it may easily flow into flaws; thus, raising the viscosity is not a satisfactory solution. One other inherent difficulty is caused by the high mobility of atoms in the liquid state as compared to the solid state. Because of this mobility, it would be expected that gases would diffuse more rapidly through a liquid. It is also probable that the solubility of oxygen in the liquid would be comparatively high. These factors would tend toward rapid permeation of oxygen and oxidation of the substrate. It is most reasonable that this problem could be solved by incorporating a solid phase, which is impermeable to gases, as a component of the coating. To overcome the tendency of a liquid to flow easily, it is possible to use surface tension to advantage. If the surface were made up of a large number of capillary tubes of sufficiently small diameter, then surface tension would hold the liquid even against the acceleration of a centrifugal field.

In the course of the examination, at the BureLu of Standards, of fusible tin boiler plugs for the Steamboat Inspection Service, it became evident that an investigation should be undcrtaken to determine the precautions necessary in the manufacture of acceptable plugs. The results of the tests of these plugs show that their manufacture has improved, though at present not all of the plugs tested are, satisfactory. Table 1 gives the result of tests of some 1500 plugs from about 100 makers. Records of the tests show that several of the makers were able to produce satisfactory plugs with every pouring. The Steamboat Inspection Service has the following specifications for fusible plugs: "Fusible plugs for use in boilers of steam vessels under the jurisdiction of the Steamboat Inspection Service shall be made of bronze casing with the bore tapering continuously and openly from end to end, and filled from end to end with tin not less than 99.7 per cent. pure and to contain not more than 0.1 per cent. of lead and not more than 0.1 per cent. of zinc. The small end of the bore may be countersunk not more than 1/32 in. in depth and width, but no recess, thread, or cavity other than this countersink shall be allowed." A method was developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for evaluating viscosity data from slurries obtained in leaching sinters from the lime soda sinter process for extracting alumina from aluminous silicates. The logarithm of the viscosity was observed to be a linear function with time. The slope of the plotted line provides a means for evaluating viscosity behavior in a lime soda sinter blurry and also a means for comparing gelation characteristics directly with other variables in the lime soda sinter process. This report presents one aspect of a continuing study by the Bureau of Mines on methods for treating siliceous aluminum ores. It is one of the many programs of the Bureau concerned with conservation, development, and use of our domestic minerals resources. Previous investigations of lime soda processes, both by the Bureau4-7/ and industrial concerns, have demonstrated that sintered materials containing CaO, Na2O, A1203, and S102 in various combinations exhibit a tendency to gel or set when mixed with water or other extraction solutions. Gelling prevents satisfactory recovery of alumina and in extreme cases prevents operation of an extraction plant.

Commodity currency intrigues most of us because of the problems it offers to solve for the Third and the First Worlds. What problems might be solved, if commodity currency were to be adopted in the Third World? That is really the question we are probing here right now. It would take a while to think through all their subtle consequences of this question, but, off the top, it might well have at least three important impacts. Most important of these to this audience is relief from unfair Third World competition. Second, it might well liberate Third World economies from financial indebtedness to the First World and give them freedom from the liquidity limitations. The third benefit is that it might help relieve World trade tensions. All three benefits are interrelated. We could start our speculations on the application of commodity currency from anyone of these starting points. But let us use the starting point most important to you, unfair competition to the U.S. mining industry. From there we might wind up with some thoughts on things you, yourselves, can do to improve things.

IN a study of the cold-rolling characteristics of iron-base alloys with 3 to 12 pct Al, the influence of aluminum content on the cold-rolling textures was evaluated. This work was undertaken to determine if binary iron-aluminum alloys possessed cold-rolling textures similar to other body-centered-cubic alloys and to contribute additional information on the effect of solute concentration on the cold- rolling textures. Gradual changes in cold-rolling textures with an increase in solute content have been observed in copper1 and in titanium.2 Iron-base alloys containing 3.0, '6.0, and 12.0 pct aluminum were vacuum-induction-melted in a magnesia crucible and permanent-mold cast. The materials used were high-purity electrolytic iron and 99.99 pct grade aluminum. Each ingot was 1 in. square in cross section by 12 in. in height. The bottom half of each ingot was soaked for 1 hr at 1000°C and rolled at 1000°C to a thickness of 0.055 in. with the long axis of the ingot parallel to the rolling direction. The strip was reheated between passes to maintain a rolling temperature of 1000°C.

The 2,250-MW, coal-fired Navajo Generating Station located in Page, AZ draws water from Lake Powell using submersible pumps installed in five inclined shafts. Drought threatens to lower the reservoir to below the existing intakes. A system of new steel-lined intake shafts located on the same site was required for uninterrupted plant operation. The small size of the site, and the need to keep the existing system in operation, required detailed designs and placed significant limitations on construction equipment and activities. The Navajo Sandstone that forms the near vertical shoreline of the reservoir is 98 percent very fine grained quartz, highly abrasive and contains highly fractured intervals that presented numerous challenges to drilling the new 152-m (500-ft) deep, 109-cm (43-in.) diameter intake shafts inclined 23° to 26° from vertical. Spatial constraints, submersible pump design and operational criteria required that each shaft have a unique inclination and orientation and hit a small breakout target located 76 m (250 ft) under water. Sophisticated drilling equipment and techniques as well as state of the practice downhole survey technology and methods were used to make adjustments and maintain drilling accuracy with less than 1 percent deviation. Environmental requirements mandated water as the drilling fluid and grout was not allowed in to the lake under any circumstances. The shafts were videotaped and the breakout locations were examined using an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to verify shaft locations and rock conditions, and to guide placement of pneumatic packers to ensure grout did not transmit to the lake during the steel liner installation. In anticipation of the invasion of quagga mussels, the shaft design included an allowance for a chemical dosing system and a copper-rich alloy at the exposed portions of the steel liner.

A DETAILED description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in 1920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E Hunner,1 M. H Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,3 it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved.† The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment, of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and "paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Taconite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with interbedded slate layers. "Paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers interbedded in the iron formation, high iii phosphorus, alumina and moisture The iron ores fall into two classes- (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite) The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high+manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Bessemer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden-removal and shaft-mining costs. STRIPPING PRACTICE Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer. In the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of equipment and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be overequipped and high depreciation charges will have to be absorbed

"Under the requirement to define the economic advantages of using hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, a broad-scoped project was initiated to quantify the costs associated with operating fuel cell vehicles and diesel vehicles. While ventilation savings are clearly an advantage for the former, a complete and detailed analysis of this and other operational and capital cost elements was undertaken in order to provide the mining industry with factual information in considering the changeover from one technology to another.This paper outlines the results of the investigations to date defining the costs/benefits associated with capital purchases, operations (electrical/diesel, mine air heating fuel, ventilation, openings, surface and underground infrastructure, maintenance, labour, etc.), delivery of energy, regulatory obligations, and mine production. Considerations are given to the type and size of a mining operation, the depth, and location in North America.Significant ventilation power, equipment, and infrastructure savings are possible with the application of fuel cells for shallower mine applications. At depth, where heat is an issue, there is a reduction in benefit. Specific qualifiers such as minimum air velocities, dust dilution, shaft, and heating system velocity limits must be considered on an individual mine basis. While the capital cost for fuel cell mining equipment is currently higher than diesel versions the high cost of fuel cells is anticipated to be reduced significantly in the near future with the intensification of manufacturing. In either case, the operational savings would probably be sufficient to balance the supplementary capitalization costs.Comprehensive reports have been issued."

"Generally speaking, the most intensive efforts at dust control in the mining industry have, in the past, been concerned with underground operations and where uranium ore or high silica material is processed. In the past several years, Stoop Rock has made Intensive efforts to reduce dust levels in it's Iron ore pelletizing complex. There have been no great engineering break-throughs with regard to dust control in such plants, and certainly no new engineering techniques have had to be applied at Steep Rock. This paper deals with how significant improvements in dust levels have been achieved through minor modification to dust collectors and ventilation units, improvements in operating practices, and education of supervisors and hourly personnel.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONSteep Rock Iron Mines is located 120 miles west of Thunder Bay near Atikokan. The geostatistical estimation of the reserves of an ore deposit is highly dependent on the quality and stability of the variograms of the sample grades. Gold deposits commonly show a skewed grade distribution. The few high grades at the tail end of the distribution produce unstable variograms that are difficult to model. If these grades are cut to a lower grade value or removed, more stable variograms are obtained. However, outlier grades may make a deposit economically viable, and their cutting or removal should be treated with caution. To reduce (but not to eliminate) the effect of high grades, a transformation of the raw data can be performed. Most commonly used transformations are: logarithm, gaussian anamorphosis, rank and indicator. Variograms of the transformed grades are resistant to high grades and present a clear structure. The weak point of data transformation appears when grades are estimated by kriging; the estimates are very sensitive to slight variations in the parameters of the back-transformation. More robust variogram estimation procedures can also be used, but often these procedures are not suitable for skewed grade distributions as they are based on an assumption of a contaminated normal distribution. The Porgera gold deposit in Papua New Guinea has a highly skewed grade distribution, with grades ranging from 0.01 to 3500 g/t and a coefficient of variation greater than 5. For the geostatistical estimation of the high grade zone of the deposit, the influence of the high grades was quantified by calculating and comparing the following variograms: raw grades, raw grades with the highest grades removed and transformed grades. The study confirmed that there is no general method for handling high grades in a geostatistical reserve study. Several methods should be tried to quantify the influence of high grades.

Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health rleterinratinn_

Vast deposits of lignite occur in the Gulf Coast states and northern plain states. Lignite resources are cited to be over 43 billion tons in the Gulf Coast states. An additional resource of 16 billion tons are reported in North Dakota (Jackson, Smith, 1981). All lignite in the U.S. is mined at present by the open pit method. Draglines and scrapers are primarily used to remove the overburden. Bucket-wheel excavators are also being considered for new mines in the planning stages. Lignite seams are mined using front-end loaders, shovels and trucks, or Easi-miners. The depositional environment of lignite is weak sedimentary soils and rock. Ground water is often encountered within the mining depth. Surface water resulting from heavy rainfall or snow melt contributes to the problems of mining. Mining depths of up to 60 m (200 ft) are under consideration. Draglines exert additional loads on the highwalls and spoil piles. The combination of any number of these factors may cause instability of the slopes. Bearing pressure, trafficability, and settlement can also be a problem for excavation and loading equipment.

The silver phase of silver and finely divided alumina composites is shown to grow as single crystabs upon solidification from the melt. These crystals grow without the aid of an externally applied thermal gradient or a mold. The single-crystal growth is more readily disrupted as the alumina content varies from the optimum concentration of 20 wt pct. Pretreatment such as variation of fabrication pressure, and presintering of the specimens appear to play a lesser role in this phenomenon. In actual practice the growth of single crystals of metals from the melt is a tedious, painstaking process.' Care must be taken to insure the proper thermal gradients and rate of growth in a vibration-free environment. Excellent single crystals can be grown when these variables are controlled. When a second insoluble and finely divided phase is present in the melt the growth of single crystals is difficult, if not impossible, even under the most favorable conditions outlined above. During the past few years, a composite of silver and alumina has demonstrated an ability to resist flow even though the major phase, silver, is mo1ten. 2 A more surprising feature of this material is the ease with which single crystals of silver grow upon cooling the composite from temperatures above the melting point of silver to temperatures near room temperature. Observations have been made that demonstrate that single crystals of silver will grow even when conditions most unfavorable for growth of pure silver crystals exist. The crystals grown in this manner are imperfect in that a great deal of subgrain structure exists. It is the purpose of this manuscript to qualitatively describe this process and to attempt to isolate the influencing factors of this behavior. MATERIAL PREPARATION The composite material is prepared by powder-metallurgical techniques. Two items of great importance are the introduction of oxygen into the system and the obvious need for a thorough mixing of the metallic and refractory oxide phases. The oxygen is necessary in order that the silver wets the alumina. Without oxygen the phases separate and the material shows no unusual properties. In order to supply the needed oxygen the silver is added in the form of silver oxide which is readily decomposed to oxygen and silver upon heating. The silver oxide is readily obtained in a finely divided form that allows a uniform mixture of the alumina and silver oxide to be prepared. The correct ratio of alumina to silver oxide is mixed in the presence of alcohol in an ordinary food blender. The mixture has the consistency of a thin slurry and after mixing for approximately 20 min is dried and pressed into billets at various pressures. Computer simulation of mine ventilation systems, after a slow start in the early sixties, is gaining increasing acceptance for planning, design, and evaluation purposes. Numerous programs are readily available from government, university, consulting, and industry sources. The computer adage "garbage in, garbage out" is as applicable in ventilation engineering as in any other application of computers, and has been responsible for the questionable results obtained in some instances. The source of input data for a ventilation simulation is most often a pressure-quantity survey of the mine, or, in the case of a new mine, information derived from a survey of an existing mine which has conditions similar to those expected in the new mine. The crucial step is to generate simulation input data from the ventilation survey. Problems such as quantities that do not balance, pressure gradients opposite to measured air flow, differences in the pressure datum in a multi-shaft mine, modeling of leakage, and deviations in flow from the square law (H=RQ2) are frequently encountered and must be resolved. The purpose of this paper is to discuss these aspects and to propose procedures which can lead to input data for valid simulations of mine ventilation systems.
