Generating short- and long-term mine production schedules in isolation and independently from each other means that only a local optimum can be achieved when each scheduling phase is carried out. The globally optimal solution however, can be achieved when integrating scheduling phases and accounting for the interaction between short-term and long-term activities simultaneously. This paper addresses the task of integrating short- and long-term production plans by combining the short-term objective of minimising deviation to targeted mill feed grade with the long-term objective of maximising net present value (NPV) into a single mathematical model. A case study is presented which compares the present values of the same stope data set scheduled via separate long and short-term models and than by the proposed integrated model which applies a predetermined penalty for each tonne of metal deviation to target for the respective ore tonnage being processed. This allows an operation to obtain a globally optimal scheduling regime when taking into consideration the cost and loss of value resulting from fluctuations in grade to the mill over the short-term.

THE production and use of copper in the world, like that of other metals, has been of slow growth. In 1880, production in the United States, was only about 60,000,000 lb. and the world's production 325,000,000 lb. Up to 1913 there was a gradual and regular increase in production; in 1912 the production was 1,250,000,000 lb. for the United States and 2,200,-000,000 lb. for the world. At the outbreak of the war there was a slight falling off, both in the United States and elsewhere, but when it was realized that the war was not to be a short one and that copper was one of the most important things for carrying it on, there was a tremendous increase in production every-where. Roughly speaking, the average production for the years 1916, 1917 and 1918 was very close to two billion pounds in the United States and three billion pounds in the world. WAR DEMANDS STIMULATED PRODUCTION Not only did the production of copper in the United States increase, but the same may be said of .all the base metals, particularly of zinc. Much of the zinc used by the Allies came from Australia, but had been smelted in Belgium and Germany, now closed to them. We were called upon to make good this lost supply and in feverish haste built new zinc smelteries and opened new mines. The armistice found the United States with a large surplus of copper on hand, variously estimated at from 800,000,000 to 1,000,000,000 lb. In addition to this surplus in the United States, there were considerable stocks in the hands of the Allies and also immense quantities of unused brass. To. complicate the situa-tion still further, the reclamation of old brass shell cases and other used material was instituted, still further curtailing the demand for new material. This situation was- not appreciated at the time and it was assumed, that the Central Powers would immediately come into the market ? replenish their exhausted stock of copper. During the war Germany had torn down copper trolley wires and roofs, and melted up bronze bells, doors, statues and other copper-bearing material to reclaim this metal for military purposes. But Germany-was unable or at least unwilling immediately to replace her copper substitutes.

The Hermit Islands are situated at 145¦ E 1 30'S in the Bismarck Sea approximately 200km WNW of Manus Island. They are dominated by basalt flows, one of which yielded a K/Ar isotopic date of 3.4 + 0.05Ma. All basalts examined were olivine-bearing, but one sample also contained hornblende. Although many outcrops were weathered, no evidence of pervasive hydrothermal alteration was observed on any islands and non-weathered rocks are petrographically fresh and many retain glass.

Models of the size specific processes of particle collision, attachment and detachment have been combined in a form suitable for analysis of a full-scale flotation plant. The model is based on a first principal approach to particle collection by bubbles. Parameters considered include particle size, bubble size, particle contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment and froth recovery. Using data structures configured within an Excel spreadsheet using æLimn: The Flowsheet ProcessorÆ, the model has been incorporated into a description of the individual cells within a simple roughing and cleaning flotation circuit. Simulated feeds of varying particle size distribution, feed tonnage and varying mineral hydrophobicity representing different mineral phases are presented to the model to produce predicted final concentrate grades and recoveries. Practical techniques for measuring many of the parameters included in the model are now becoming readily available. However, relating the terms included for contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment (ie water recovery) and froth recovery to measurable parameters in operating plants remain as continuing challenges for research.

Traditional methods of resource modelling and mine planning rely upon geostatistical methods applied to exploration drill core data to derive a three dimensional model of the distribution of metal grades, quantised into rectangular prisms or blocks. The resulting block model is a primary input into short, medium and long term mine planning. However, block attributes are averaged or interpolated over a complete block, meaning that information at smaller scales is lost to the mine planning process. Grade engineering for new mining methods, such as the development of more accurately controlled blast designs, continuous miners for hard rock and sensors for rock properties that can be distributed along the operations process and value chain, allows excavation to be much more selective than traditional blasting, and provides data for driving earlier separation of waste from ore. This selectivity can be optimised if the resolution of resource models can match or exceed the spatial resolution of selective mining technologies. Opportunities for selective mining increase as a deposit becomes more heterogeneous. This leads to an interest in methods for estimating the distribution and characteristics of mineral heterogeneity within the ore-body. "Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a major occupational health hazard in underground mine environments, even with available abatement technologies. Prior work has demonstrated that micrometer-scale water droplets, or “fog,” may be effective in removing significant number fractions of DPM from a conditioned exhaust stream. Here, a series of laboratory experiments are described which demonstrate that such a treatment can remove significant DPM mass from an unconditioned stream. The removal mechanism involved coagulation of the DPM and drops. The fog treatment removed about 45 percent more DPM mass on average than no treatment. Varying engine load, flow rate and fog droplet number density did not significantly affect the results under the range of conditions tested. IntroductionDiesel engines have seen widespread use for well over a century due to their relatively high thermal efficiency and fuel economy (Heywood, 1988). Recently, however, the adverse health risks of diesel exhaust have become increasingly clear. The term diesel particulate matter (DPM) is used to refer to the solid components of diesel exhaust, which are an ultrafine mixture of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC) and minor constituents including sulfates and metal ash (Kittelson, 1997). DPM is generally considered to occur almost entirely in the submicrometer range. It is classified as a carcinogen (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 2013), and epidemiological studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between long-term exposure to DPM and other combustionrelated fine particulates and increased cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases (Pope et al., 2002; McDonald et al., 2011). Many of the risks of diesel exhaust are associated with the physical and chemical properties of exhaust components (Heywood, 1988; El-Shobokshy, 1994; Kittelson, 1997). Exposures are generally measured and regulated on the basis of mass concentration. However, DPM number density and particle size are increasingly recognized as critical factors in terms of health outcomes (Bugarski et al., 2012; Kittelson, 1997; Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 2013; Pope et al., 2002)."

During an investigation of the copper-rich portion of the copper-silicon-iron system as part of an extensive research program on P.M.G. alloys, which was begun in 1937 in the research laboratory of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, it became apparent that the binary copper-silicon system below 7 per cent Si needed revision, therefore an investigation was undertaken. Both X-ray methods and microscopic technique were employed. Despite the many investigations that have the clarification of this system as their object, no two successive reports on the system have agreed in placement of the alpha-phase solubility limit, and uncertainty about the secondary phase first to appear has been voiced several times.3,4,5 It was therefore not surprising, when T. Isawa's6 and M. Okamoto's7 works were reported at the time we were finishing up our experimental work, to find essential disagreement between their results and ours. But when C. 5. Smith's latest work on the copper-silicon systema was published just as we were finishing our laboratory report, it was indeed gratifying to find that the latter's diagram and ours checked in all essential features, except the temperature of the peritectoid line above 830" C. Many attempts were made to retain the beta phase during the present investigation, but none was successful. Isawa,6 however, reports that he has been able to obtain X-ray photograms of the beta phase. The structure, he states, is body-centcrcd cubic with a lattiee constant of 2.848 ,&. at 7.2 per cent Si. Okamoto7 and Smith8 both use the designation Kappa for the hexagonal phase, and to avoid confusion this designation will he adhered to in the present paper. In the normal operation of mines, the aggregate effect of many seemingly minor op rations may be very important as respects economy and safety. Anion: these operations is the method employed in coupling and uncoupling mine cars. For economic reasons the equipment in mines has not been protected as well as railroad equipment. It is pertinent that haulage accidents rank second in severity among mine accidents, and that manual coupling of cars has been one of the most frequent causes of such accidents. One study4/ revealed that coupling was responsible for about 20 percent of haulage accidents underground. A review of early conditions on steam railroads, which were responsible for the introduction of safer methods of coupling cars, indicates how conditions in might be improved. THE STORY OF RAILROAD COUPLING As any considerable improvement in mine-car coupling probably will follow lines somewhat similar to those that brought order out of chaos for the railroads, it seems appropriate to review briefly the steps taken to improve railroad coupling from the days of link and pin couplings of various types to the adoption of the standard ?M.C.E? automatic coupler.

Refuge chambers may potentially save the lives of miners during a mine emergency. For this reason, it is crucial that miners know how to operate them. Unfortunately, because refuge chambers provide so many services, they can be very complicated and difficult to operate. Therefore, NIOSH has created this document with suggestions for developing manuals and educational materials. A multidisciplinary team comprised of NIOSH engineers, sociologists, psychologists, health communication professionals, and geologists developed the recommendations contained in this document. These recommendations are based on an evaluation of manufacturers? instruction manuals from both the U.S. and globally, interviews with over 20 mining and safety experts, and an extensive literature review. This research, focused on the best practices for refuge chambers, led to the formulation of this document. It is intended to offer suggestions to manufacturers and mine operators on how to create effective and easy-to-understand training manuals for miners as well as tips to create the most comfortable and usable refuge chambers. It should be noted that these recommendations are not meant to substitute for manufacturer-supplied materials but rather to be used in conjunction with manufacturer?s materials. Manufacturers should always be consulted for up-to-date information about their chamber. Although different states and different mines refer to underground refuges by different names, this guide will simply refer to underground refuges nearest to the face as refuge chambers, whether inflatable from a skid or constructed from steel. Other popular terms for refuge chambers are rescue chambers, rescue shelters, and refuge shelters. Refuges that are nearer to the shaft, whether a prefabricated refuge chamber or one built into a crosscut, will be referred to as outby refuges because of their location in the mine. Outby refuges can be permanent, semipermanent, or portable and are usually located at every other SCSR cache. Outby refuges are sometimes called hardened rooms, outby shelters, and in-place shelters. When discussing outby refuges and refuge chambers collectively, this guide will refer to them as underground refuges. Other terms for underground refuges include refuge alternatives, locations of safety, and safe havens. This document is designed to be read either cover to cover or by specific section. It is recommended that on first read, this guide be read cover to cover. In subsequent readings, manufacturers and mine operators may find it easier to use the table of contents page to locate specific information on parts of the refuge chamber.

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Pittsburgh coalbed was studied in Washington and Green Counties, Pa., and in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. Va., where this coalbed is now being mined at its greatest depth. The coalbed thickness appeared to be structurally controlled; the bed was generally thinner near the axes of anticlines and thicker near the axes of synclines. The overburden isopach shows a similar relationship. Most of the clay veins in coal occur in the synclinal troughs, generally under sandstone roof. Cleat orientations measured in 18 underground mines showed that face cleats are perpendicular to the axial trends of the folds, and the butt cleats are parallel to the axial trends, indicating structural control of the cleat. Measurement and analysis of surface joint orientations provide a method for predicting the cleat orientations of the coalbed, but linears measured from infrared photographs and photoindex sheets helped only to determine regional trends. The results of these investigations provide a geologic framework for rational planning for underground mine development to use the best available technology to cope with methane emissions, coalbed discontinuities, and related ground support problems.

Reduction of oxygen-containing copper has always heretofore been brought about with wood poles. This paper reveals the first successful, economical, and Practical substitute for poles: a gaseous reductant, of which the production and plant use are detailed herein. THE art of fire refining of copper, consisting of melting, oxidation, slag removal, and finally reduction with wood poles, has been practiced for many centuries. An authentic record, discussed in detail in De Re Metallica,* mentions that as early as 1200 A.D. workers in this field of metallurgy were already acquainted with and practiced the basic principles of copper purification. Undoubtedly, the art was well developed marly centuries before the first written records began to appear. Notwithstanding the many advantages gained by application of mechanical con. trivances and by the tremendous increase in size of operations over the centuries, the reduction phase of the process has persisted essentially the same to the present time except for a very recent breakthrough. Numerous articles have been published and many patents have been issued on the subject of substitutes for wood poling in the past half century. They have dealt with a variety of gaseous, solid, and liquid reducing agents. But to the knowledge of the writer, no procedure has ever been prosecuted to a complete success on a large operating plant scale with the single exception of gaseous reduction of oxygen-containing copper revealed in detail herein. [Internal-combustion engines have been used in Belgian mines for a long tine. As early as 1899, the use of these engines underground was considered, but the general policy was to prohibit such an application unless ministorial permission was granted' in special instances. At that time only gasoline engines were available, and a few of these were installed as stationary engines, although in general they were replaced later by electric or compressed-air motors. However, the number of gasoline locomotives continued to increase. Regulations governing the use of these locomotives soon were formulated and as early as 1920, when a now set of regulations was promulgated, the use of gasoline locomotives in mines could be authorized by the Provincial Inspection Department and no longer depended on obtaining a ministerial decision. Since 1931 this authorization may be given by the Chief Inspector of Mines, Director of the Mining District. Since 1920, safe practices have boon incorporated in the regulations.]

New powerplants, tunnels and dams are currently under construction at Meraaker to triple the annual power production of a nearly 100 year old power scheme. A total of 44 km tunnels with cross sections varying from 7 m2 to 32 m2 have been excavated in hard rock formations. Ten kilometers were excavated by a High Performance Tunnel Boring Machine (HP TBM). The remaining tunnels have been completed by the drill and blast method, using modem proven equipment and procedures. This paper gives special attention to the TBM drive and equipment selection, including, planning, site organization and performance.

Simulations of hazardous processes are shown to be one of the most effective uses of the computer for training.

September 20, 1917. As this meeting terminates the year's agreement under which the Engineering Foundation has appropriated its income to the National Research Council, a brief summary of what has been accomplished seems called for. The Research Council was organized Sept. 19, 1916. The Executive Committee was appointed at that meeting; since that date two other meetings of the Council have been held, one in Boston, on Nov. 13 and 14, the other in Washington on April 19. During the intervals between the meetings of the Research Council, the Executive Committee has conducted all of the business of the Council. There have been 29 meetings of the Executive Committee, 13 in New York up to the first of May, 15 in Washington subsequently, and one in Boston. The meetings in New York were devoted to the organization of the Research Council and especially to appointment of committees. At the outset, the Council had no very clear idea of the way in which it was to organize; there were several other groups of scientific men at work, among them, the Research Committee of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Engineering Committee of the Advisory Commission to the Council of National Defense. Time was spent in straightening out these two principal complications, both of which were satisfactorily adjusted. The upshot of these negotiations is to leave the Research Council as the only representative, national body of research men, assisting the Government. During the period up to May, the Executive Committee in New York selected carefully the personnel of some 25 principal committees, and of a large number of sub-committees; so carefully were these chosen that of the entire number, several hundred, there have been only one or two declinations. Some of the important steps in the development of the Research Council are the establishment of the Military Section, composed. of the members of the Council connected with the Government and resident in Washington. This Section put the Research Council into close contact with the most important officials of the Army and Navy. From it has grown the Washington office of the Council, and the recognition of the Research Council as the "Department of Science and Research of the Council of National Defense; " and the establishment of the Washington office after the Council of National Defense had officially recognized the Research Council. About this time Dr. Hale, Chairman of the Council, appointed Dr. Millikan to be Vice-Chairman to represent the Council in Washington, and Dr. Millikan has since then been in charge of the work of the Council. At the request of the Secretary, Dr. Millikan has prepared a brief report of some of the work of the Research Council during its first year, which is appended to this report. It shows that the Research Council has been active in much of the important work. under way in our preparations for war, and that it has rendered effective services to the Government.

A miscible displacement pilot using a slug of LPG driven by separator gas was conducted in the Cardiurn reservoir of the Pembina field. The injection pattern was a 10-acre, inverted, isolated five-spot. Upon completion of the LPG-gar phase, an experiment was conducted using a slug of water followed by gas. Calculated performance of the pilot is compared with actual performance. Equations are developed to calculate the distribution of LPG into zones of varying permeability, to estimate the progress of the flood at different times in the various zones and to estimate gas rates after breakthrough. The analysis indicates that permeability stratification was a dominant factor in controlling oil recovery and that oil was completely displaced from the swept pore volume. The results of the pilot indicated that miscible flooding is a practical means of pressure maintenance in this reservoir. The total recovery from the pilot area was good in spite of the early breakthrough of LPG. The effects of stratification were reduced by injecting a slug of water into the partially swept reservoir. INTRODUCTION The Pembina field,' located in Alberta, is the largest oil field in Canada and one of the largest in the North American continent. The reservoir is a stratigraphic trap producing from the Cardium sand. Neither bottom water nor free gas has been found. The recovery of oil by the natural depletion mechanism has been estimated at 12.5 per cent. Pressure maintenance studies of various areas have indicated that the recovery can be increased 21/2 times by water flooding, and a large area of the field is presently under water flood. However, reservoir studies of the North Pembina area indicated that miscible flooding might be competitive with water flooding. A pilot test was conducted to evaluate the performance of a miscible flood. A 10-acre, inverted, isolated, five-spot pattern was selected for the pilot. The pattern area was large enough to minimize wellbore fracturing effects and contained sufficient oil to provide significant working numbers. The performance of each of the four producers could be evaluated individually and compared. In the event of breakthrough in one direction, the effect would be isolated from the other producers. The use of a single injector minimized the volume of LPG required, and, because of the high mobility of gas, one well was sufficient to inject the necessary daily volume to replace the high rate of production. With four producers, the test could be completed in time for results to be evaluated, additional engineering studies to be made and a unit to be formed before the reservoir pressure in the North Pembina area declined below the bubble point. The pilot was located in an area developed on staggered, 80-acre spacing. The injection well was drilled at a regular location, while the four producers were drilled 467-ft north, east, south and west of the injector. Each quadrant and its associated producer were identified according to their direction from the injector— that is, north, east, south or west. The eight surrounding producers on 80-acre spacing were shut in to isolate the pilot area and provide for reservoir pressure observation. The pilot wells were completed using permanent-type completion techniques. After coring, casing was run through the pay section and cemented. Inside 51/2-in. casing, 2 1/2-in. tubing was hung. The wells were perforated opposite the Upper Cardium sand and lightly fractured. Fracturing volumes, rates and pressures were low to minimize the extent of the fractures. The fracturing treatments average 1,000 lb of 20-40 mesh sand in 700 gal of a low fluid-loss sand-carrying agent. Feed rates and wellhead fracturing pressures averaged 5.5 bbl/min at 2,535 psig, respectively. After fracturing, the productivity index was measured in each of the five pilot wells. The average PI of the four producers was 0.41 BOPD/psig drawdown. The measured PI'S were approximately the same as PI'S calculated from core analysis data, indicating that the fracturing treatments were just sufficient to overcome

"The Amalgamated Kirkland gold deposit is located at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, within the Archean Abitibi Greenstone belt of the Canadian Shield. It lies on a fault or “break”, termed the Cyprus Break, which is a splay off a regional structure termed the Cyprus-Battle Mountain Break. The Cyprus Break merges with the Cyprus – Battle Mountain Break above the -250 m level, as it was not encountered in shallow drilling or surface exploration. These structures lie 1.5 km south of the 727 000 kg (23 million ounce) Kirkland Lake Main Break and 0.5 km north of the 872 000 kg(30 million ounce) Larder Lake Break.The deposit is hosted by alkalic Timiskaming Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks which are overthrust by older Larder Lake Group tholeiitic and komatiitic fows along the Larder Lake Break. Timiskaming syenitic intrusives, similar to the host rocks for the Kirkland Lake Main Break gold deposit, intrude both suites.The Amalgamated Kirkland deposit consists of lode-style gold mineralization which is mainly hosted by altered and pyritized Timiskaming trachytic volcanics which wedge out or thin at depth, between two sedimentary units. The intersection of the Cyprus – Battle Mountain and Cyprus Breaks, in conjunction with the westward plunge of the volcanic wedge, appears to control the westerly plunge of the Amalgamated Kirkland deposit at approximately 50º.Mineralization is characterized by blue-gray brecciated and “wormy” quartz-ankerite veinswhich contain up to 10% fne-grained pyrite and, in decreasing order of abundance, minor galena,chalcopyrite, sphalerite, molybdenite and visible gold. The sulfdes and gold commonly occur alongfractures and wallrock inclusions within the veins. Native gold occurs as fne pinpoints distributed in 1-mm to 5-mm size clusters of up to ten or more grains.The auriferous veins occur within a quartz-ankerite-sericite-pyrite alteration assemblage which is enveloped by a broader zone of ankerite-sericite±hematite±quartz-pyrite alteration up to 60 m wide. This latter assemblage overprints the regional greenschist-facies chlorite-calcite assemblage.The Amalgamated Kirkland property has had a long history of exploration activity beginning with the first discovery of mineralization in 1911 on the Hunton Shaft claim located in the northeast corner of the property. Since that time various prospecting, mapping, trenching, geophysical surveys and diamond drilling programs have concentrated on either carbonate zones along the Larder Lake Break or quartz veins along the northern side of the property in association with complex trachyte flows and syenite dikes.Battle Mountain Canada Inc. located the Cyprus – Battle Mountain Break through a prospecting, trenching and geophysical program in 1989. Drilling by Battle Mountain and Cyprus Canada under the surface showing, coupled with several revisions to the structural interpretation of the Cyprus –Battle Mountain and Cyprus Breaks, resulted in delineation of the Amalgamated Kirkland deposit. Location of an auriferous structure through basic surface exploration within 1 km of a world-class orebody demonstrates both the subtle nature of Archean gold deposits and the potential for finding new mineralization in heavily prospected camps."

At present, in Japan, the application of in-place leaching technique to the mined-out stopes has been carried out at two copper mines in a comparatively large scale. These mines are the Kosaka mine and the Tsuchihata mine, both are situated in the north-east district of Japan. At first, the author would like to tell about the in-place leaching operations and their results at these two mines. Then, the problems involved in the application of in-place leaching technique to the Japanese metal mines and the possibility of the future development of this technique in Japan are referred, too. Next, as to the research works, the author would like to explain briefly about some of the important results obtained in the recent studies on in-place leaching as well as on bacterial leaching in Japan.
