This paper briefly describes the construction in 1979/80 of a 70m deep trial open pit coal mine near Bowmans S.A. and describes more fully the hydrogeological aspects of the exercise. The primary purpose of the Trial Pit was to provide a large sample (700 tonnes) of coal for combustion tests to be carried out in West Germany and the United States of America. Consideration was given to obtaining the sample of coal by drilling and by shaft sinking as alternatives to open pit methods. It was expected that economic mining of the deposit on an operational scale could only be achieved by open cut methods and it was recognised that major uncertainties existed in planning such a mine in the deep unconsolidated multi-aquifer deposit. It was therefore elected to obtain the bulk sample by constructing a trial open pit, which would be closely monitored to provide as much data as possible for future planning of a full scale mine. The dewatering of the Trial Pit was achieved using 26 deep pumping wells, assisted in the later stages by several hundred well points. This was probably the largest dewatering project currently in operation in Australia.

"A convective dispersion model has been utilized to calculate the real-time airborne dust concentration in mine airways using re-entrainment as the only source term for airborne dust. It incorporates two important sources of re-entrainment in mines -- air velocity and movement of objects. The model has a sink term accounting for the deposition of particles along the airway. The model is solved using a finite difference scheme which is coded for computer. The computer model outputs airborne respirable and total dust concentrations along the airway as a function of time. The real-time and average gravimetric concentrations from several in-mine experiments were compared with the results from the simulation of the experimental conditions. This model can be used for estimating airborne dust entrainment due to air velocity, equipment movement, and persons walking. INTRODUCTIONEdwards and Ford (1988) developed a model for coal dust explosion suppression and utilized a predetermined value of threshold velocity for flowing air to pick up dust from floor. Depending on the strength of the removal forces, re-entrainment can increase the airborne dust concentration in mine airways. The most prevalent forces causing re-entrainment in mine airways are the drag and lift forces due to flowing air, and removal forces due to the movement of persons and vehicles. Shankar and Ramani (1991) have investigated the unique characteristics of the re-entrainment phenomenon in mine airways. Experiments on re-entrainment of coal dust particles were conducted in mine airways, and in a wind tunnel (Shankar and Ramani, 1994a, and 1994b). The results from the two experimental studies were found to compare well (Shankar and Ramani, 1995). There is no reported model to determine the airborne dust concentrations due to airflow or persons walking under conditions existing in mines. The present study is a part of a continuing research project in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust on the spatial and temporal behavior of airborne dust in mine airways (Ramani, 1983)."

This circular discusses the application of these various types of equipment to the different types of sand and gravel deposits and contains a reference bibliography. It completes the discussion of excavating problems.

Specimens of a hydrided Mg-0.5 Zr alloy were strained in tension at 500°C and constant rates of 2 x10-3 5 x 10-3, and 2 X 10" min-1. Hydride-denuded zones formed at grain boundaries normal to the tensile-stress direction as a result of magnesium transport during difusional flow. The width of the zones could be measured and the measurement used for calculating the diffusional component of the imposed tensile strain. The strain from diffusional flow was found to increase with imposed strain at a diminishing rate, tending to saturate at approximately 12 pct. Strain rate sensitivity of flow stress was low. The apparent non Newtonian character of the diffusional flow is attributed to a non Newtonian process acting in parallel with it which could be boundary shear. Fracture grows out of voids that form in the denuded zones. DEFORMATION of a grain by diffusion of atoms from boundaries stressed in compression to boundaries stressed in tension is Newtonian viscous,1-3 and evidence has accumulated in recent years that such a process may be responsible for the high strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress of super-plastic alloys.4"7 One piece of evidence is that experimental stress: strain-rate relationships can be quantitatively explained.5-7 There is also metallo-graphic evidence of diffusional flow in superplas-ticity, but in a limited amount. The formation of striated bands on the surface of superplastically deformed specimens has been attributed to diffusional flow.5"7 The basis of that attribution came from experiments on a coarse-grained, nonsuperplastic and hydrided Mg-½ wt pct Zr alloy which formed hydride-denuded, light etching zones at tension-stressed boundaries when strained in tension at 270?C.6 The origin of these zones had already been traced to the diffusional flow of magnesium atoms to the boundaries.' The particular observations in the more recent work were of striated-band formation on the surface and denuded-zone formation internally, with both the bands and zones having the same width and appearing at tension-stressed boundaries. It was argued that the bands were a surface manifestation of the zones and hence of diffusional flow. Of course in superplastic alloys which do not contain internal metallographic "markers", the surface bands can be the only metallographic indication. In the present work, denuded-zone formation was utilized, as it has been by others,9-11 to extend the observations of diffusional flow and to measure the strain, ed, resulting from it. Grain size had to be large to measure ed with accuracy. The grain size chosen for this study was -30 , and with that a strain of 10 pct from diffusional flow produces a denuded zone only 3 µ in width. The large grain size naturally precludes superplasticity. The observations of diffusional flow were complemented by determining the strain from the other operative deformation modes: slip, e,, and grain boundary shear, egb. An incremental specimen extension is the sum of increments from slip, and grain boundary shear as well as diffusional flow. Division by a common length is required to convert to strain. If this length is taken as the initial specimen length, then imposed engineering strain, e, is given in terms of the component engineering strains by e = ed + es + egb [1] Stress:strain-rate relationships are determined by the way in which this "strain balance" is made up. EXPERIMENTAL Material. Zirconium hydride markers were introduced into the Mg-0.5Zr alloy by annealing in hydrogen at 450°C for 30 min. The hydride concentration was particularly high at zirconium rich stringers, which was fortunate in that the transverse boundaries at which denuded zones form lie perpendicular to the stringers. Grain size after annealing was 30 µ. Photomicrographs of unstrained and strained material are shown in Fig. 1. Procedure. Specimens were strained in tension with an Instron machine at crosshead velocities of either 2 x 10"3, 5 x X or 1 x 10-2 in. min-'. Specimen length and diameter were 1.0 and 0.2 in., respectively, so that initial strain rates in tests at constant crosshead speed were 2 x 10"3, 5 x X and 1 X l0-2 min-1. Tests were made at 500°C which is a compromise temperature at which diffusional flow is still measurable but grain growth is not active enough to interfere with metallographic measurements. The tests were made in a hydrogen atmosphere. Strain Balance. An equation additional to [I] is eg = ed + es [2] where eg is strain measured from grain elongation. Measurement was made of ed, eg, and, of course, e, which enabled all the strains in Eq. [I] to be determined. For this purpose, strained specimens were sectioned longitudinally, polished, and etched. The strain from diffusional flow, ed, was computed by measuring on photomicrographs the width in the tensile direction of denuded zones at either end of a grain XI, X2, adding them, and dividing by twice the initial longitudinal grain dimension L0, Fig. 2. Reported values are the results of measurements on seventy randomly selected grains; 95 pct confidence limits on ed were +1.5 pct strain. Basic premises for evaluating special characteristics of gold-bearing porphyry metal systems stem from their contrasts with properties of the class as a whole. Included features are differences in geologic, thus tectonic, environments, subtle but real differences in the proportions of accessory metals Mo-Ag-Au that are regionally and within some regions, tempo-rally distinct, contrasts in the Ag:Au ratios, petrological-geo-chemical as well as isotopic differences between intrusive suites, the age and nature of host terranes, contrasts in alter-ation style, and zoning variations of mineralogical and physical properties of rocks. These properties are linked in various ways in different regions and suggest that in large gold-bearing systems where gold may be uniformly distributed, environ-ments of emplacement, and compositions or sources of igneous "progenitors" may dominate in importance over processes, and that systems in which gold is zoned are processes-dominant.

"The successful introduction of new high intensity stirred milling technologies (e.g. IsaMill, SMDetritor) to the mining industry in recent years prompted Noranda-Falconbridge to initiate a study comparing these technologies to the conventional technologies of ball milling and existing vertical stirred mills (e.g. VertiMill). The study was unique in that it utilized the same material (Brunswick Mine zinc cleaner regrind mill feed), the same sizing instrument (a Malvern laser difractometer) and sampling protocol, and media size and type (for the high intensity stirred mills). The paper compares the net energy efficiency (kWh/t) of the various technologies, their power intensity (kW/m3) and product size distribution spread (P80/P20). A key finding is that media size is critical to achieving optimal performance. As part of the performance comparison, an analysis of the four methods of power measurement was made (Prony brake, shaft torque, grinding chamber reaction torque, “no-load” correction) and followed-up with an experimental test procedure using three of these methods. The findings include divergent results for power measurements and some explanations based on the observations are proposed. The direct shaft torque and Prony brake calibration methods are shown to be the methods most suitable for stirred mills.INTRODUCTIONThe motivation for the investigation reported here was the lack of a suitable comparison within the available literature of relative grinding efficiency for the emerging crop of new industrial fine grinding technologies. Such comparisons are potentially fraught with inconsistency, from ore samples and grinding media used, to testing methodology, to size measurement techniques, to the power measurements themselves. The collaboration of the industrial suppliers (at the time MIM Technologies and Svedala, now Xstrada Technologies and Metso Minerals) and McGill University (P. Radsiszewski) were sought in order to ensure as valid a comparison as possible. The work was performed between October 2000 and November 2002, led by the mineral processing group at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. The paper is presented in two sections; Part A considers the different power measurement methods and a comparison of the results for the SMDetritor (SMD) technology, while Part B reviews the grinding performance of the 5 technologies investigated using the selected performance criteria."

High stacking-faullL densilies weve found in the GuAsi_xpx layers. These are not observed in heavily dolled epitaxial layers tzar in layers with low phosphorus compositions. The dislocatiorz density in GuAsi-x px was highest at the sub-stvate- epilaxia1 layer interface. Composilion changes introduced dislocations in the epitaxial layers. ManY semiconductor p-n junction lasers of Group TIT-Group V compounds and their alloys have been reported in the past several years. Laser action at visible wavelengths in GaAsl-x,Px was first reported by Holonyak and Bevacqua. GaAs, a direct transition semiconductor which lases, and Gap, an indirect transition semiconductor which does not lase, form a continuous series of solid solutions.2 Laser junctions can be fabricated in GaAsl-xPx crystals with phosphorus compositions up to about 40 mol pct. In addition to the production of coherent radiation in these crystals, the efficient recombination radiation of p-n junctions in this material has equally important potential in the development of low-power semiconductor lamps. To achieve a high conversion efficiency of electrical to optical energy in p-n junctions in this material, the relation of physical properties of the crystal to luminescence efficiency must be better understood. Although the electrical, optical, and device properties of GaAsl -xPx junction lasers are understandably of considerable interest, the work to date indicates that the more serious problems are the chemical and metallurgical difficulties encountered in the growth of this material.3 In addition to the problems of chemical purity, crystal imperfections, such as dislocations and stacking faults, can be expected to affect both the efficiency of the radiative recombination process and the perfection of the p-n junction.3 The last requirement, i.c., that of the perfection of the p-n junction, is a particularly troublesome one in the fabrication of laser diodes. To obtain good laser diodes, the p-n junction must be flat, which permits the radiation to be reflected from the resonant cavity boundaries. Junction planarity is extremely sensitive to the crystal perfection of the semiconductor material. Also, it is known that at high dislocation densities (-105 per sq cm) it has not been possible to build laser junctions in GaAsl-xPx . Few studies have been reported on the crystal defect structure of GaAsl-,P,. The first serious study seems to be that of Wolfe, Nuese, and Holonyak,3 who examined the dislocation structure of monocrystalline bulk (nonepitaxial) material grown by halogen vapor transport. In this paper are reported some observations on the dislocation and stacking-fault structure of GaAsl_,P, crystals grown by a vapor transport process on substrates of GaAs. EXPERIMENTAL Crystal Growth. The GaAsl-xPx crystals were grown in an open-tube flow system, using two sets of reagents. GaAs, Pr(red), and HC1 were employed in one method. The transport reaction is =950JC GaAs+HC1 = GaCl +1/4As4 +1/2H2 and the deposition reaction is 2GaAs1-xPx +GaCl3 Composition control is obtained by the flow rate of the HC1 and the vapor pressure of the P4, which is maintained in a separately controlled furnace. The second method has been described by Ruehr-wein4 and utilizes gallium, AsH3, PH3, and HC1. The same transport and deposition reactions as above are involved. Composition control is obtained solely by the flow rates of the three gases involved. All of the crystals were grown on chemically polished GaAs substrates oriented on the (100) plane. The thicknesses of the epitaxial layers were typically 100 to 300p. Revealing of Dislocations. Dislocations were re-vealed on both the( 111 ) and { l l l }b faces by chemical etching. When lime and magnesia are used as fluxes in the smelting of titaniferous ores fluid, digestible slags low in iron oxide and high in titanium dioxide are produced. The mineral phases present in such slags are (Fe,Mg)O.ZTiOp, CaTiO3, and minor amounts of silicate glass (or its devitrification products). The flux additions are added to the ore in relative amounts to crystallize a ratio of (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 to CaTiO, of near the eutectic proportions of 60 pct (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 and 40 pct CaTiOl. FeO.TiOz (ilmenite) remains present in the slag until the FeO content is reduced to approximately 8 pct. Optimum slag composition is obtained by reducing the FeO content to between 2 and 6 pct. Continued reduction shifts the (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 to oxygen deficient structures classified as MgTi306 and MgTi2O.. Further reduction yields titanium oxycarbides and freezes the melts. The(Fe,Mg)0.2TiO2 structure shows a complete isomorphous replacement of iron by magnesium. It also forms a solid solution compound with as high as 12 mols of TiO2 under reducing conditions without the occurrence of rutile or reduced titanium oxides in the slag.

Disposal of mine tailings in "waters of the United States" is presently prohibited even though case studies indicate that the practice may be environmentally viable. To simulate disposal in the natural environment, nine containers of tailings and sediment were instrumented and placed on the ocean floor near Juneau, AK as were ninety-six biosample containers. Pore water concentrations of five metals were determined, and biota populations were characterized for both materials. After 500 days of exposure there were no statistical macro scale differences between tailings and sediment biota populations or Cu, Pb, and Zn pore water concentrations. Tailings released slightly more Fe than sediment, but sediment released significantly more Mn than tailings. Disposal of mine tailings in marine waters may be environmentally safe.

This report describes results of beneficiation and smelting studies conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines on chromite samples from the Emma Belle and Seiad Creek prospects in the Seiad Creek area, northern California. Samples were chosen from this area because the ore is typical of disseminated types that represent a sizable domestic reserve. The two samples were similar in composition, and both responded in like manner to gravity beneficiation. As the ore was banded, considerable coarse gangue was rejected in laboratory sink-float from a minus-3/4-inch, plus-6-mesh fraction without excessive chromium loss at a medium density of 3.32. An average of 85.6 percent of the chromium was recovered in the sink product, which analyzed 35 percent chromic oxide (Cr203). Tabling yielded concentrates containing 49 percent or more Cr203; however, recoveries, ranged from only 33 to 45 percent. A combination of tabling and electrostatic separation of the table middlings showed that the chromium recovery could be increased to about 73 percent; the composite concentrate averaged 53 percent Cr203.

"In general, there is a strong correlation between dislocation characteristics and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys. In this study, dislocation characteristics of tensile deformed Al-Mg alloys were examined by transmission electron microscopy. An Increase in the solute concentration, ranging between 0.3 and 1.1%, Mg leads to increase in strength and decrease in uniform elongation. The accumulation of dislocations during the tensile deformation is observed in lower strain as the concentration of solute Mg in the alloy is higher. It is believed that the solute Mg in Al-Mg alloy promotes the accumulation of dislocation during the tensile deformation resulting in the decrease in elongation.INTRODUCTION The influences of the amount of Mg concentration on the tensile properties of Al-Mg alloys has been investigated by many researchers. It has been understood that the tensile ductility of Al-Mg alloy is higher for the Al-Mg alloys with higher Mg concentration beyond 2 mass% (Mukai, Higashi, Hirano & Tanimura, 1993). Uchida and Yoshida (1995) reported the formation of microbands during the tensile deformation due to the localization of dislocations, and the amount of microbands were reduced when the Mg concentration of the Al-Mg alloy was increased from 3 to 9 mass%. Their study suggested that the dynamic recovery of dislocation was retarded due to the increase of the Mg concentration during the tensile deformation, which resulted the increase in ductility. On the other hand, in the case of Al-Mg alloys with the Mg concentration less than 3 mass%, the reason why the ductility of Al-Mg alloys decreases with increasing Mg concentration has not been sufficiently investigated. In general, the Mg concentration used for automotive usage is less than 1 mass%, in the case of Al-Mg-Si alloys (Aoki, 2013). Therefore, to clarify the roles of Mg in the low concentration range on ductility of aluminum alloys and to elucidate its mechanism contribute to alloy design of Al-Mg-Si alloys having good formability."

The ConSep ACACIA Reactor is a device, which utilises a high intensity cyanidation process to achieve very high, usually near total, recovery of gold from gravity concentrates. The process utilises a fluidised bed and a chemical oxidant to enhance the gold dissolution kinetics to the point where the bulk of the dissolution occurs in a few hours. For convenience and security, most plants operate a 24-hour turn around. The product from the process is in the form of cathode gold ready for smelting by traditional means. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor performs a two-fold role. Firstly it increases gravity gold production, leading to a decreased CIP feed grade. Secondly, it removes slow leaching components from the plant leaching circuit. This two fold benefit leads to the following efficiencies: enhancement of the dissolution kinetics; enhancement of the adsorption kinetics; reduction of the gold load reporting to the carbon; a significant reduction of the ægold in circuitÆ lockup; and removal of slow leaching entities which can also result in a lowering of the required cyanide concentrations in the leaching circuit and a subsequent reduction in overall cyanide consumption. The above benefits are discussed in this paper, with a particular focus on the ConSep ACACIA ReactorÆs role in removing slow leaching components, with data generated over a 21-month period. Improvement in overall plant recovery via removal of slow leaching gold species is achieved in two ways. Firstly, some of the slow leaching entities, successfully leached under intensive cyanidation, are not always fully leached under plant conditions. This results in a lowering of the solid tailing. Secondly, the faster leaching kinetics achieved in the plant as a result of the removal of slow leaching entities results in faster and more complete adsorption of the dissolved gold onto activated carbon. This results in a lowering of the solution tailings. The construction and operation of the ConSep ACACIA Reactor is simple. Apart from the reactor body, which is a proprietary design, all components of the system are æoff the shelfÆ or specific to the siteÆs requirements. In operation of the fully automated version, a PLC controls a series of valves and pumps but except for a daily changeover process the only operating component for the bulk of the time is a relatively small solution pump. The process can be totally automated giving the security of a æhands freeÆ concentrate handling process up to the point where the product is presented as cathode gold. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor was developed by Anglogold Australia (formerly Acacia Resources) for Union ReefÆs Gold Plant and has been in production since February 1999. It has proven to be a low cost, high recovery, mechanically reliable method for the processing of gold concentrates. Such has been the success of the plant, as of June 2003 there are eighteen full installations of the processing plant installed at mines owned and/or managed by Anglogold, Newmont, Placer Dome, Independence (formerly Lonrho), Sons of Gwalia and Harmony.

A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine problems associated with the use of ferrous fractions from urban refuse as melting stock for steelmaking and to evaluate the resulting steel products. The study involved 50-pound ingots from laboratory melts and 50-pound ingots from 1-ton electric-arc-furnace melts. The 50 pound ingots from the laboratory melts and the arc-furnace melts were hot rolled to provide material for mechanical and corrosion testing. Results obtained in the study include the following: Most steels rolled successfully and exhibited acceptable surface and edge condition. Tensile strengths of the plain carbon steels were not significantly affected by copper up to concentrations of 0.65 pct and were not affected by tin content up to 0.16 pct. Yield strength increased with increasing copper and tin contents, and impact strength decreased with increasing tin content. Hardness increased slightly with increasing copper content. In general, properties of the steel produced were not measurably affected by charge composition (that is, melting stock), melting practice, or method of scrap preparation.

The existing main mine ventilation system for the production areas to the Kiruna mine was constructed during the period 1994-1996 and extended with 4 more shafts, including fan stations, for the sea ore body from 1997-1998. Two papers have been presented from this project at the 7th US Mine Ventilation Symposium in 1995 and at The 6th International Mine Ventilation Congress in 1997. In 2005, pre-studies for a new main haulage level were started. Different haulage methods were presented including ventilation systems. The pre-studies showed that the existing ventilation system, including fan stations for the new main haulage system in the production area, could be extended. However, a new system for the central area, which was not in the initial investment program, would be needed. In the beginning of 2006, a decision was made to design a new ventilation system for the central area to make it possible to get air to the development work for the new main haulage system, independent of the haulage method. This system was operational by the beginning of 2007. The new main haulage system, which was decided to be located on level 1365 m, only requires that the existing shafts be extended - the capacity of the fans seems to be enough. However, the problem is that the existing level 1045 m and the new level 1365 m have to be in operation in parallel for approximately 7-8 years. The challenge for the moment is determining how to ventilate the production areas for both levels at the same time, while simultaneously constructing the extended system. This paper will describe the problems associated with the extension of the main ventilation system and some potential solutions for these problems. The new main haulage level 1365 m must be in operation by 2012.

One of the most striking features of the coal series passing from peat through brown coal, lignite, etc., up to anthracite is the gradual reduction of moisture content with the increased coalification of the original plant material. Thus drained peat from a bog may contain 90 per cent water, brown coal contain 50 per cent, lignite 30 per cent, while a bituminous coal may contain only 1 per cent moisture. Moisture, therefore, is one of the important factors to be considered in coal classification, especially with the lower rank coals. With bituminous and higher rank coals the moisture content is less satisfactory for classification; it may even pass a minimum value and then increase with increasing rank to anthracite and superanthracite. Coal in an undisturbed seam contains moisture which is an integral part of the coal, but it may also be wet with free, underground water percolating through the seam. Only the former must be considered in evaluating the moisture content of the coal for classification purposes; this will be called the "true moisture" of the coal. When the seam is mined and sampled the sample taken may show the true moisture; on the contrary, it may contain in addition free mine water or, especially in dry, well ventilated mines, it may contain less than the true moisture. Coal contains unstable organic compounds which may decompose, with the production of moisture, when the coal is exposed to air at ordinary temperatures, or is heated with or without exposure to air. The potential moisture of a coal therefore is higher than its actual moisture. The lower the rank of the coal, the greater its instability, as a rule, and the greater the care necessary to avoid oxidation or decomposition in any investigation of moisture content. The majority of coal workers have preferred, on account of the difficulty in evaluating the true moisture of a coal, and for other reasons, to classify coals by analyses calculated to the dry-coal basis. A number of workers familiar with lower rank coals have recently insisted that the classification of such coals can be satisfactory only if analyses on the moist-coal basis are employed. The moisture-holding capacity of coal is therefore intimately connected with coal classification, and in this paper a procedure is outlined for determining the true moisture of a coal,

"The Ni/Co arbitrary ratios of fibrous precursor were investigated during coordinated coprecipitation by changing the precipitating medium. The results show that the original molar ratio ofNi2+ to Co2+ in reaction solution can be maintained in the coprecipitate at pH'.'05.0 and the coprecipitate is single phase solid solution using water and water-X precipitating medium. But the original Ni/Co ratios are no longer kept and composition of the coprecipitate is not uniform at pH>5.0 in water precipitation medium. In order to obtain the precursors with the required morphology and accuracy Ni/Co ratios, the optimum conditions of fibrous precursors were chosen as follows: ammonia used as complex agent and pH adjustor, water-X solvent as precipiting medium, oxalate as coprecipitated agent, 8.0-8.4 for pH value, 50-70°C of reaction temperature, 0.5-0.8 mol/L of initial nickel and cobalt salt concentrations and excesses of oxalic acid of 10% - 20%.IntroductionNi-Co alloy as an important transition metal alloy with high mechanical strength, good anti-deformation, corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, thermal stability, electrical conductivity, electrical contact, and special magnetic properties indicates that it can be used as high-temperature catalyst, special magnetic material, high-temperature electrochemical devices, and so on [1-6]. An ideal composite powder should have an appropriate stoichiometric ratio, good uniformity of chemical composition, appropriate phase, low impurity content and small particle size [7]. Similarly, the composition of nickel-cobalt alloy powder has an important impact on its crystal structure, properties and applications. Guo[8] found that magnetisms of CoxNi1-x such as magnetic anisotropy, curie temperature, and the shifts of the spin steering are very sensitive to the composition of alloy powder."
