In the presence of oxygen, galena is oxidized in an aqueous medium containing ammonium acetate in accordance with the following reaction: PbS + 1/2 0, + 2 NH~Ac -» PbAc, + So + 2 NH: + H2O. This reaction was studied in an autoclave under oxygen pressure by polarographic measurement of the concentration of lead ion in solution. Oxidation rate is parabolic. The reaction products are lead acetote and elemental sulfur, the latter forming a film on the galena crystal. Reaction kinetics appear to be determined by the diffusion of lead from the galena phase to the solution interface through the film of sulfur. RECENT applications of pressure leaching on a commercial scale have emphasized the metallurgical importance of the oxidation of sulfide minerals in aqueous media by oxygen under pressure. Research experience has shown that sulfates, thio-nates, and metal oxides are the products of humid oxidation of sulfide minerals in basic solutions. The metal oxides may be solubilized in the presence of a complexing ion.' Certain oxide minerals are also amenable to treatment by this type of oxidation.' Several kinetic studies have been made of reactions of this type. Stenhouse' found that pyrite (FeS?) oxidized in a sodium hydroxide solution to produce a soluble sulfate and an insoluble layer of iron oxide and that the kinetics of the reaction were controlled by oxygen diffusion through the oxide layer. Andersen' studied the oxidation of galena (PbS) in a sodium hydroxide solution under oxygen pressure. He found the lead and sulfur to be simultaneously oxidized to produce plum bite ions and sulfate ions, and that the reaction rate was proportional to the surface area of the galena. The kinetics appeared to be determined by the reaction of oxygen and water with the galena surface. In each of the above reactions the metal and sulfur components of the mineral were oxidized simultaneously and at equal rates. In the present study the alkaline medium has been replaced by an approximately neutral solution of ammonium acetate in which lead sulfate is soluble. Under the conditions no sulfate was produced and no sulfur could be detected in the solution. The metal component of the mineral was solubilized and the liberated sulfur remained as a film of elemental sulfur on the surface of the galena crystal. A kinetic study of this reaction was undertaken to establish the kinetic mechanism and to determine the rate controlling step. Specific reaction rates were determined by oxidizing crystals of galena of measured surface areas in an autoclave maintained at the desired temperature and oxygen pressure. The rate of reaction was followed by measuring the concentration of lead in the ammonium acetate solution with a cathode ray polarograph, employing stationary platinum electrodes incorporated in the autoclave. "Expanding upon one aspect of a recent paper on ""Fluid Column Roasting at Sherbrooke Metallurgical Co. Ltd.,"" the present paper deals with the operation of the fluid column process to achieve substantial elimination of cadmium and lead during the roasting of pelletized zinc concentrates. Designed to meet the need for additional feed for Matthiessen and Regeler Zinc Company's vertical retort zinc smelter in West Virginia, without recourse to a sintering operation, the plant is capable of simultaneously attaining very low lead and cadmium levels on demand, through operation in the manner described. Fluidizing air admitted via the wind box is supplemented by natural gas admitted via a tuyere bank 15 ins. above the hearth, in quantities adjusted to maintain a reducing atmosphere within the interstices of the bed. In addition, careful attention is paid to bed temperatures, which run from 1,080° to 1,100°C. Under these reducing conditions, 90 per cent of the cadmium and 92 per cent of the lead in the feed are eliminated, the sulphate sulphur content is decreased by 0.5 per cent, sulphide sulphur is held at 0.6 to 0.08 per cent, and the zinc content correspondingly in-creases. The fuel value of the natural gas is recovered as extra steam, which carries a credit. There are some added difficulties with fume accretions, gas conditioning and gas -cleaning, some of which have yet to be overcome."

In August 1998, a truck loaded with 18 tons of blasting explosives, including over 13 tons of ANFO, left the road near Walden, Ontario. The crash caused a fire; approximately 30 minutes later a large detonation occurred, causing substantial damage to the roadway and local property. Although nobody was injured in the explosion, the consequences of a similar incident in a heavily populated area could have been catastrophic. Following the Walden incident, Transport Canada and Natural Resources Canada embarked on an extensive experimental program to determine the cause of the detonation. This paper describes part of that experimental program, designed to understand better the thermal decomposition of ANFO.

This report summarizes Bureau of Mines laboratory tests of four tungsten¬-bearing materials of various grades, The test work has demonstrated that the dry reaction between sodium carbonate and scheelite is best conducted at 900° C. or a few degrees less. The sodium carbonate requirement, in addition to the stoichiometric equivalent of the scheelite, is in some inverse relationship to the grade of tungsten in the ore. Residence time and particle size exert a definite but minor control on the reaction. Pressure-digestion tests on an impure concentrate indicate the technical feasibility of extraction by this process. INTRDUCTION Over 100 years ago Oxland discovered that tungstic oxide could be removed from wolframite and converted to a soluble form by reacting the mineral with a soluble alkaline salt at elevated temperatures. He patented this discovery, and this patent 4/ since has been the basis for most tungsten extraction. Much literature exists on this process and its modifications, and the characteristics and possibilities of the reaction are quite well defined.

In a recent paper,1 the solid-solution strengthening of tungsten and tantalum in a portion of the W-T;-MO-C~ alloy system was described. Additions of tantalum and columbium to tungsten led to significant strengthening, and the introduction of dispersions into these alloys was suggested as a means of further increasing strength. Dispersion strengthening of columbium and molybdenum alloys has been studied extensively.2-4 The approach used to dispersion-strengthen molybdenum alloys appeared equally suitable for tungsten alloys, and, therefore, a brief study was undertaken to determine to what extent the introduction of carbide dispersions would strengthen a solid-solution tungsten-base alloy. A base composition of tungsten and 10 to 12 pet Cb was selected; previous work1 had shown that the tensile strength of this solid-solution alloy was 50,000 psi at 3000°F. An oxide ore heap (80,000 ton assaying 2 per cent copper) and a sulphide ore heap (300,000 ton assaying 1·7 per cent copper) are being leached in series in a closed circuit system. The ore is friable and weatherseasily giving severe percolation problems. These were eased by applying liquors at 235 gal/min to trenches 2 ft wide and 6 ft deep along the full length of the heaps.Cementation recovery was improved from 20 per cent to over 80 per cent by regular intermittent agitation of the iron using a back hoe unit.Liquor pH is controlled by acid addition, and iron content is controlled by a bleed-off set according to predictions made from a pH-Eh diagram drawn for the liquor components. These controls, together with acyclic wetting and draining procedure, have raised production from 6 ton/week to 10 tdn/week of 80 per cent copper.

Proper scaling of unsteady-state flow in laboratory gas reservoir models can be achieved if the permeability/fractional porosity ratio is less than 0.5 md. Porous media meeting this specification can be obtained from mixtures of sand and Portland cement provided (1) the water/cement ratio is in the range of 0.35 to 0.40, (2) the sand/cement ratio is in the range of 1/1 to 2/1, (3) the sand grain size is in the range of 48-100 to 18-28 mesh, (4) the mortar curing time is 7 days or more and (5) the cured mortar is dried under vacuum to reduce the temperature level employed during the drying process. The areal homogeneity of the mortars tested is reasonably good, although significant trends in vertical permeability were noted. The Klinkenberg and non-Darcy coefficients of mortar are such that proper scaling of these effects in the laboratory model could be expected. INTRODUCTION A long term deliverability prediction for a gas well is generally based on data determined from flow tests that are of short duration relative to the producing life of the well. These data, together with an estimate of gas reserves in place, form the basis for establishing the parameters of the mathematical model used to predict performance at future times. Results obtained from a mathematical model represent only an interpretation of the physical process being modeled. Experimental verification of the production process from discovery to abandonment is needed where production occurs under carefully controlled conditions. Ideally, one might consider such an experiment to be conducted in the field. Even if the cost of such an experiment could be justified, the time required would make it impractical to consider. However, if the time scaling problem could be handled properly, an experimental model of the gas reservoir production process could provide the necessary data to study the mechanisms of the production process in a reasonable time period. An experimental model has been designed and constructed using the data of this study as a basis. The model reservoir system consists of one producing well located at the center of a right-circular cylinder of porous material. Ten to 15 observation wells are located at strategic offset positions from the producing well. These wells, and the producing well, are fitted with pressure transducers so that the pressure-time history can be recorded at various radial and azimuthal positions in the drainage area during the entire production life of the system. Time is scaled in the model so that the time required to produce gas from discovery pressure to abandonment pressure is about 2 hours. This compares with a 20-year producing life in the model's field counterpart and gives a time scale factor of approximately 1:100,000. DESIGN CRITERIA To establish design criteria for the experimental model, the reservoir is considered to be a finite right-circular cylinder of radius rr, and height h with a producing well of radius rw located at the center and completed through the producing formation. This reservoir consists of a porous medium which has a uniform permeability k and gas porosity and the gas contained in the reservoir has density p, viscosity µ and molecular weight M. J. Chipman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.)—The fact that the experimental work has been applied to copper rather than iron and that the paper is presented to the Iron and Steel Division, I regard as rather significant. It shows the unity of metallurgy and the fallacy of trying to cut it up by metals. This result for the solubility of sulphur in molten copper correlates with Professor Schuhmann's finding that the published data on the other side of the copper-sulphur miscibility gap are also in error. I should like to ask the author to say a little bit more about the sulphur capacity of the slag. T. Rosenqvist (author's reply)-—I hope that Dr. Chipman will find the derivation of the expression for sulphur capacity more clearly explained in the printed version of the paper than in the oral discussion at the meeting. I feel that this quantity, which actually is the ratio of two activities, can be measured more easily than the individual activities. Even if the ratio CaO/CaS is chosen as the standard state, the expression can be used for any slag, even for slags completely free of lime, and it represents a way to put the desulphurizing power of all slag constituents into one bag. Some doubt has been expressed as to whether oxygen ions really exist in calcium oxide and in molten slags. From a thermodynamic view point that question is of minor importance. The term oxygen ion activity, or any activity for that matter, is defined rigorously by the equation: activity = exp u/RT, where u is the change in free energy connected with the transfer of one mol of ions from the standard state into the slag. Whatever happens to the ion in the slag is of no concern to the thermodynamicist. Regardless of whether the ion is "free" in the slag or not, or whether it is present in a very small amount, its activity can always be expressed, and for a thermo- dynamic calculation that is all we need. However, ionic activities will only be of some real value if they are simple functions of the slag composition, or can be measured easily. Concerning the real nature of the oxygen in the slag, my feeling is that the oxygen atom has a rather multiplex nature depending on how strongly it is tied by covalent forces or polarized by the other atoms or ions present. The oxides of iron, cobalt, and nickel differ from calcium oxide and blast furnace slags as to the amount of free electrons that can give rise to electronic conductivity. In slags we know that the conductivity is mostly ionic. The fact that reversible emf's can be obtained with oxygen electrodes in certain salt melts, indicates a significant amount of oxygen ions in these melts. But extended work, e.g. polaragraphic studies and measurements of transference number; are needed to obtain quantitative information about the real structure of the slags. D. E. Babcock (Republic Steel Corp., Youngstown, Ohio)—-With reference to the ion, it might be well to remember Dr. Moses Gomberg. All of his life he had no use for the ionization theory and he contributed greatly to the field of chemistry on the assumption there was no such thing as ions. I do not think we have to worry about whether the oxygen is ionic or not. I think one thing specifically should be brought to your attention and this I think is one of the important contributions of Dr. Rosenqvist. He pointed out what we know as oxygen potentials or what is described as oxygen potentials. I have used this concept for a long period of time and I want to state that if this concept is properly applied, it vitiates much of what we have in the literature, or makes our usual ideas regarding oxidation seem primitive. This paper examines the effect of prill size consistency, internal panicle density, and oil absorbency on Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO)-emulsion blends. By analyzing these physical properties of prill and the nature of the blending process, a mathematical model has been developed to theoretically predict blend densities. Calculated densities can now be compared to actual field densities to give an operator a basis for comparing various manufacturers’ emssions and Ammonium Nitrate (AN) during bid solicitation. The lowest priced emulsion and/or AN may not be the most economical, due to the impact of specific physical characteristics. These factors dictate the blending mechanics and resulting density yields for various mixes. The research was driven from observed ‘field’ mixing relationships and data. Ultimately, such a model can be an effective tool in evaluating blends from a cost and performance basis.

Introduction The incentives for developing a distributed form of the comminution model include: • for describing the heterogeneous comminution behavior of multiphase mineral systems (i.e. realistic ore bodies, such as complex sulfide ores consisting of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and siliceous minerals) and •for generating, for various locked and free particles, in situ, microscopic, breakage behavior such as the mode of fracture (intergranular vs. transgranular), the relative rates of breakage and the breakage distribution. However, the computational difficulty and the effort made in estimating a large number of parameters (Andrews and Mika, 1975; Wiegel, 1976; Herbst et al., 1985, 1988) do not justify the utility of this approach. Also, obtaining the results experimentally is very tedious and time consuming if using this approach. Although recent work in this area (Choi, Adel and Yoon, 1987; Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990) showed good results for liberated particles, the quality of the estimation and prediction was poor for locked particles. Attributing this to the complex breakage behavior of locked particles, it was concluded that additional constraints, and possibly modification in the breakage distribution functional form for locked particles, were necessary. However, further mathematical analysis revealed that the method previously used was in error. The purpose of this technical note is to present the correct solution methodology used in solving the general model equations of a multicomponent mineral system containing multiple classes of locked particles. Previous work and connection The general form of the comprehensive, distributed-component comminution model has been described as (Herbst et al., 1985) [d (m (0) -[ I - B ] S_ m(t) = A m(t) (1)] where [A] is the fundamental matrix/state companion matrix, commonly referred to, in the comminution literature, as the "mill matrix." Note that for a distributed-component comminution model, this is a full, general, real matrix, unlike a lower triangular matrix for a simple grinding model or a lumped-binary grinding model with one locked-particle class (Herbst et al., 1985, 1988). Also note that all of the underlined letters refer to matrices. Herbst et al. addressed the difficulty in arriving at a closed form of the analytical solution of Eq. (1) via similarity transformation [IT J inv (T)]]. This difficulty occurs for several reasons: •[A], as a general real matrix, may have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. •More importantly, there is no guarantee that a set of eigenvectors of [A] will turn out to be independent. An attempt was made to solve this problem by implementing a decomposition method. With this technique, the mill matrix was decomposed into a sum of lower and upper triangular matrices [(i.e., A = L + U)]. Then the solution was obtained using similarity transformation (Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990). The Red Dog massive sulfide deposit is located in the western Brooks Range of Alaska 100 miles north of the village of Kotzebue. It contains the largest zinc reserve in the world. Reserves were doubled in 1995 with the discovery of the Aqqaluk deposit and significantly increased in 1996, with the discovery of a deep zone of mineralization to the north. At present the global reserve and resource is 143 million tonnes of 16.1 % zinc and 4.3% lead. Red Dog is a silica + sulfide synsedimentary replacement deposit hosted in barite and black shale of the Mississippian Kuna Formation. Red Dog was thrust northward during the late Mesozoic Brookian orogeny. Understanding the setting of the deposit at the time of formation and its subsequent deformation history is critical to current exploration efforts and to future discoveries in the district.

The ternary Ni2MnGa intermetallic compound is an intelligent material which has both a ferromagnetic property and a shape memory effect (SMB), The use of the shape memory alloy films for an actuator of micro-machines is very attractive because of its large recovery force, The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of fabrication conditions and to clarify the relationships between these properties and fabrication conditions of the Ni-Mn-Ga films, The Ni-Mn-Ga films with a thickness of nearly 5 um were deposited with a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering apparatus using a NisoMn2sGa25 or Nis2Mn24Ga24 target. They were heat-treated at various temperatures between 873 and 1273 K for homogenization and ordering and then cooled in a furnace, The composition of the films depended on the sputtering power. The as-deposited films were crystalline and had columnar grains, After the heat treatment the grains widened and the grain boundary became indistinct with the increasing heat treatment temperature, The martcnsitie transformation temperature of the heat-treated films increased with increasing nickel content. Furthermore the effect of plastic deformation and constraint aging on SME is also investigated, After plastic deformation, the two-way SME was shown through the martensitie transformation and its reversion, The intensity of X-ray diffraction peaks from stress-induced martensitie phase was found, The constraint-aged films also showed the two-way 5MB by thermal cycling,

A 500kg aluminium AlSi7Mg03 casting has been poured and the metallurgical quality at different locations inside the casting has been thoroughly investigated. It included measuring the local tensile properties (YS, UTS, El) in the T6 condition, the dendrite fineness (DAS) and the level of microporosity. A correlation was found between the microporosity level, the local solidification time and solidus front velocity; this correlation allows to predict the porosity level in large aluminium castings (solidification times between 20 and 200 minutes). Quite expectedly, properties varied widely within the casting and the actual mechanical properties were much less than the "textbook values" based on measurements carried out on separately cast standard specimens. A correlation between the secondary dendrite arm spacing (DAS) and the local solidification time was in keeping with previously published data. Finally the conditions to obtain an acceptable finish on machined surface were determined.

Coal-cleaning operations commonly produce a fine-waste stream containing a considerable amount of coal. The recovery of this coal is normally not economical because the coal is mixed with large amounts of difficult-to remove clay slimes and is often heavily oxidized or contaminated. Conventional froth-flotation machines cannot, in a single flotation stage, produce an acceptable product from such material, and even flotation columns often have difficulty cleaning this type of feed. A new type of flotation column was designed specifically to deal with these problems, and a column of this design was installed and tested in a coal-cleaning plant in Ohio. The feed coal tested was the plant&apos;s tailings-thickener product. The coal was 80% -176 µm and had a heating value of 8401 Btu/ lb. The coal contained 39.8% ash, as fine clay, and 2.83% total sulfur. Because previous attempts at conventional flotation of this type of material had been abandoned, plant personnel believed that the coal was too heavily oxidized and contaminated for flotation to be effective. However, by using the new column it was possible to recover up to 85% of the calorific value in a product containing < 11 % ash, and it was possible to recover 60% of the calorific value in a product containing <8% ash. In addition, the bulk of the pyritic sulfur was also rejected from the coat.

One possible alternative for disposal of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-products is use as backfilling support material in highwall mine adits. The finite element method was used to analyze the variation of stresses and displacements within and around a highwall adit backfilled with FGD materials. The engineering properties of the rock material and the optimum mix proportioning of the FGD materials were obtained from laboratory tests. Finite element analyses show that, for the case in question, the roof displacement would decrease about 48 percent and the peak stress could be decreased about 58 percent. The study indicates that fairly weak FGD materials can eventually lead to stability of backfilled highwall adits.

In preparation for this presentation, 193 organizations were asked to describe their mining research efforts. 60% responded, The meaning of "research" was taken in several different ways. The continual efforts of progressive companies to improve themselves were reported as research. We will call this and any effort to solve specific and immediate problems "practical research". The continuing investigation of subjects of long range interest will be called "basic research".
