The high gas emissions associated with the depth of mining and very high coal extraction at some Australian Collieries have provided a need to investigate the influence of geological and mining conditions on levels of gassiness. The introduction of longwall extraction in particular is associated with complex strata control problems and quick changes in gassiness. To this stage of Australian coal mining, no standard method has been developed to predict the different levels of gassiness associated with the various geological and mining conditions; and the relationship between coal output and total methane make has not been established. For local conditions, with a large number of coal seams lying in close proximity to the working seam, the significant contribution of gas emissions from adjacent strata was expected, especially as strata relaxation occurred during longwall mining. This depends mainly on geological conditions, strata control and coal production. For the deepest of the B.H.P. Collieries in the Newcastle region, the relationship between coal output and total methane make has been investigated by systematic gas balance measurement during longwall extraction. The computer method of iteration was used to approximate the mathematical equation from the initial graphs of coal production versus quantity of methane in the ventilation system for various strata conditions. The angle of caving was established for local geological and mining conditions, for planning and design of the positions of cross measure boreholes.

The Alpala porphyry copper-gold deposit is a recent discovery located in the Imbabura Province of northwestern Ecuador. The drilling of seventeen diamond core holes over a 900 m by 400 m area has defined a northwesterly-trending, steeply northeast-dipping dike-stock complex of diorite to quartz diorite that exceeds 1300 m in height. This intrusive complex is hosted by a sequence of andesitic volcaniclastic rocks and lavas. The host-rocks are interpreted to be part of the Paleocene to Late Eocene Macuchi Formation (BGS-CODIGEM, 1997; Cruz, 2007). The best drill intercept to date is 1312 m at 0.67 % Cu and 0.63 g/t Au from 128 m depth in CSD-15-012, which includes 576 m at 1.03 % Cu and 1.19 g/t Au.

San Francisco meeting, September, 1915) IN an article in the General Electric Review, January, 1915, reference was made to the X-ray examination of a steel casting 9/16 in. thick. Fig. 1 shows one of the radiographs thus obtained. All these radiographs showed plainly the tool marks on the surface of the casting. All but one showed peculiar markings the shape of which strongly suggested that they were indeed the pictures of holes in the interior. A circular piece, 1 in. in diameter, was punched from the casting at a point where the radiograph shown in Fig. 1 indicated that a blow-hole should be found. (Location of sample shown by circle in Fig. 1.) Fig. 2 is a photograph of the end of the punching, showing the .hole that was found. Since that article was written it has seemed desirable: (1) to obtain data from which the exposure necessary for any thickness of steel could be at once calculated; (2) to find the thickness of the smallest air inclusion which could be radiographed in a given thickness of steel; (3) to determine in what direction to hope for further progress; and (4) to develop the technique of, radiographing metals. In order to gain some preliminary data, several pieces of ½ -in(12.5mm.) boiler plate were obtained, 5 by 7 in. (12.5 by 17.5 cm.) in size. In one of these, holes were drilled in such a way that the axis of each hole was midway between the faces of the steel and parallel to those faces. The diameters of these holes were as follows: Hole number Diameter 1 1/4 in. = 6.3 mm 2 1/8 in. = 3.1 mm. 3 1/16 in. = 1.6 mm. 4 1/32 in. = 0.8 mm. 5 1/64 in. = 0.4 mm.

THE Salt Creek oil field in Natrona County, Wyo., is the largest pool that has been found in the Rocky Mountain region and one of the largest in the United States. Many features of its production records are of peculiar interest, because of the unusual slowness with which it has been developed. This paper is published by the permission of the Midwest Refining Co., whose records have been freely drawn upon. Many mem¬bers of the Midwest organization have assisted in the collection of the material, but Messrs. F. E. Wood and L. E. Smith have been particularly helpful. The Salt Creek oil field is situated on a great dome with a closure of about 1500 ft., which rises at the northern end of a long anticline extending north-northwest by south-southeast for fully 25 miles. The productive area includes parts of townships 39 and 40 north and ranges 78 and 79 west of the sixth principal meridian. The Teapot oil field occupies a minor dome at about the center of the same anticline and adjoins the Salt Creek oil field on the southeast. The Teapot Naval Reserve includes the Teapot Dome and about 760 acres of the Salt Creek dome. In this paper, the Salt Creek oil field will be considered as' including all of the dome, except that part which lies within the Teapot Naval Reserve and the area west of the dome where oil is produced from shale crevices.

Spontaneous oxidation and combustion of sulfides and resultant fires are serious problems in underground mines. The Bureau of Mines has con-ducted fundamental thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) research to deter-mine the mechanisms and factors governing the rate of low-temperature pyrite oxidation, and to identify possible inhibitors to spontaneous oxidation and combustion. The mechanism of low-temperature pyrite oxidation was found to be topochemical, meaning that the oxidation process is controlled by the chemical reaction at the interface between pyrite (FeS2) and iron sulfate (FeS04)' An activation energy of 8.9 kcal/mol FeS2 was obtained for oxidation of minus 500-mesh pyrite in an atmosphere of 60 vol pct water vapor and 40 vol pct . Water-vapor content of the atmosphere was found to be the critical factor in the rate of spontaneous oxidation of pyrite, with a water-vapor content greater than 20 vol pct needed for accelerated oxidation. An atmosphere of pure oxygen resulted in negligible oxidation. The rate of pyrite oxidation is also greatly affected by the particle size of pyrite. Pyrite-oxidation rate increased drastically for particles less than 40 ~m. Room-temperature pyrophoric behavior was observed for freshly ground unoxidized pyrite (55 pct minus 5 ~m) upon exposure to air. Addition of water-adsorbing materials such as activated alumina (Alz03) decreased the rate of pyrite oxidation.

Using an instrumented laboratory high-pressure grinding rolls mill, the grinding force, gap dimension, mass flow rate and net mill power were measured for six coals and a crystalline quartz. A technique was developed to estimate the compressive stress-strain curves for compression of the materials in the mill plus the effects of elastic decompression. To reconcile the mill power and grinding pressure results, it was necessary to allow for the energy recovery on decompression. No clear correlation was obtained between the form of the stress-strain curves or the variation of specific mill power factor with the Hardgrove grindability index (HGI), although coals with the lowest and highest HGIs (i.e., 44 and 106) gave results significantly different from the other coals. Feeds below 140 mesh (105 µm) flowed more rapidly than coarser feeds and would not build up high grinding pressures. This indicated shearing and fluidlike properties rather than compression as a locked bed.

The Pit Lake at Island Copper has evolved into a 3-layered meromictic system. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) is collected and injected into the lake at 220 m depth via 2 diffuser systems. In situ dye studies were conducted during 2 differing hydrological regimes in order to determine the behavior of the ARD plume within the Pit Lake. Results indicated that when runoff from the waste dumps was low, the injected ARD remained within the bottom half of the intermediate layer of the Pit Lake, initially below depths of 90 m. However, when runoff from the waste dumps was high, the injected ARD at -220 m depth rose through the intermediate water column layer rapidly, but did not breach the top pycnocline at -10 m depth. Overall, the system is currently performing as a mixing bowl with a strong boundary or cap at the upper pycnocline. maintaining mixing below the 10 m depth water level.

MULSIM/NL (multiple scams, nonlinear) is a three-dimensional boundary-element method (BEM) program developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines for stress and displacement analysis of coal mines and thin metalliferous veins. It can analyze one to four parallel seams that can have any orientation with respect to the Earth's surface. Three main new features distinguish MULSIM/NL from its predecessors: (1) nonlinear material models, (2) multiple mining steps, and (3) energy release and strain energy computations. MULSIM/NL has six material models for the in-seam material: (1) linear elastic for coal, (2) strain softening, (3) elastic plastic, (4) bilinear hardening, (5) strain hardening, and (6) linear elastic for gob. Detailed checks show that numerical stress and displacement calculations compare well to known analytic solutions for simple problems. The total energy release calculated by MULSIM/NL is comprised of three basic terms: (1) strain energy release from the mined-out material, (2) linear kinetic energy release due to change in gravitational potential over the mined-out area, and (3) nonlinear kinetic energy release due to nonlinear materials in the total backfill and gob area. The strain energy release term is modified to account for nonlinear stress-strain behavior in the unmined materials. Comparisons of these numerical energy release rate calculations with known analytic solutions show excellent agreement.

The shale response to moisture changes and the major finding of the appropriate research concerning this subject are briefly reported in this paper. Also described are mine ambient atmospheric conditions which are responsible for moisture changes in mines. The need for a quantitative measure of the weathering potential of roof. rock is demonstrated in relation to its influence on safety and the potential for increasing the cost of mine operations. The weatherability test presented in this paper has been developed and used in many mines. It imitates the natural process in a mine by subjecting the rock sample to alternating wet and dry cycles. The natural changes are thus accelerated, but are similar to the natural conditions to which the surrounding excavation rock will be exposed. The measure of the weatherability index is the percentage of the initial sample mass remaining after the test as the largest fragment of the sample. Thus, the index changes, from 100% for rock affected by moisture changes which disintegrates completely, to 0% for rock totally unaffected. In this paper, the apparatus and testing procedures are described. Also presented are examples of test results. with a discussion of the design implication to he considered by mine planners.

A study of the effect of small amounts of interstitial impurities on recovery and re crystallization in high-purity iron (99.995 pct) has been undertaken. This paper gives results on the effect of carbon, introduced in small-dosed amounts @om 0.0005 to 0.0086 wt pct) by heating iron specimens of high purity m a static atmosphere of CO + ,. The materials prepared in this way, cold-worked 80 pct and subjected to a series of isochronal and isothermal annealings, were submitted to examinations by X-rays, micrographs, and hardness tests. It was observed that effect of carbon is remarkable in the sense of blocking recovery of mechanical properties up to the temperature at which re crystallization begins. On the contrary, carbon has a negligible effect on primary re crystallization temperature, when compared with the known effect of substitutional impurities. This is in agreement with the high mobility of interstitials. In effect, only a slight decrease, -20 pct, of the grain-boundary motion rate was noted, due to the interaction between the grain boundary and the carbon atoms. On the other hand, in the samples in which the carbon content is above the solubility limit at the temperature at which re crystallization occurs, a slight increase of nucleation frequency is noted due to the presence of precipitated carbides. ThE effect of purity on recovery and recrystalli-zation phenomena has been known for a long time; however, recently, new attention has been given to the problem since new methods for obtaining metals with extremely low impurity contents have become available. Most of this research work essentially concerns the effects of impurities which cause precipitates or give rise to substitutional solid solutions. The works of Bolling and winegard1 and Aust and utter' on lead, and Vandermeer and orddon' on aluminum, 01sen4 on nickel, and Abrahamson and Blakeney on iron should in particular be referred to. On the effect of this type of impurities a quantitative theory has been formulated by Detert and Lucke6 and has lately been discussed critically by Cahn7 and Gordon and vandermeer.' Interstitial solid solutions in iron have not as yet been studied. As the study of the effect of interstitials is of great interest both from a theoretical and practical standpoint, it was deemed useful to examine the effects of carbon, nitrogen, and boron on recovery and primary recrystallization of iron. There already is some work by Chaudron et al.,1-" on the effect of interstitials on iron; their work, however, mainly concerns secondary recrystallization. The present paper refers in particular to the effect of carbon. EXPERIMENTAL PART Preparation of Materials. The pure iron used for this research was obtained from FeCIS recrystal-lized and purified by extraction with isopropylic ether. From the ferric chloride purified in this manner, hydroxide was precipitated with a solution of very pure ammonia, and, by calcination in pure sintered alumina crucibles, oxide was obtained. Reduction of the oxide to iron sponge was performed in sintered alumina tubes with very pure hydrogen at 650°C; at the end of the operation temperature was increased to 900°C. Specimens for the experiments were obtained by sintering the sponge at 1480°C in pure Hz after a pre sinter ing treatment at 900° C. It is important to note that the treatment at 1480°C in Ha produces a further purification from more volatile elements such as zinc, cadmium, arsenic, lead, and tin. Details on the preparation and characteristics of this type of very pure iron are given in a previous work.'' Only the complete analysis performed by neutron-activation methodsz3 is given here, Table I. Some of the specimens prepared in this way were carburized in the 0 region with very low amounts of carbon by treating them at 700°C in a static atmosphere of Ha containing a definite amount of CO. In today?s environment, the availability of production equipment is a must to increase throughput and profits. For a number of mining organizations around the world, spare parts availability is key to achieving this goal. Fortunately, having less production equipment immobilized by a lack of spare parts does not equate to increases in inventory levels or in carrying costs. Advance operations research has shown a number of avenues to increase equipment availability while reducing total investment in stock. The presentation will explore these avenues by focusing on key inventory management changes that can be implemented by organizations to optimize their service and stocking levels. We have successfully applied our approaches in start-up mining projects, in mature projects and in end of life mining operations. We will illustrate our methodology using examples from our work with > 30 mining sites around the world.

This paper shows how technology developed to analyse stabilised slurries can be applied to paste flows. The rheological characterisation of paste mixtures using the generalised yield pseudoplastic rheological model is described. It is noted that the slump test does not provide a complete rheological characterisation of a paste. Methods for calculating pipeline pressure gradients for laminar and turbulent flow are presented. The minimum pressure gradient is an important consideration to ensure that solids do not settle on the pipe invert. Important points to be considered for a pipe loop test programme are noted. The usefulness of the pseudo shear diagram for scaling pipe loop test measurements is demonstrated. Issues to be considered for the design of paste reticulation systems are discussed.

This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for Zambia for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work done through the Bureau of&apos; Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J0225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) timber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and blasting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau&apos;s Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.

INTRODUCTION Since 1975, Union Carbide Corporation has been conducting uranium exploration in southwestern South Dakota. This program has resulted in the discovery of an ore body about eight miles north of Edgemont in Fall River County. The site which was previously mined for uranium in the 1950&apos;s and 1960&apos;s consists of 950 lode claims (approximately 20,000 acres) and is within the Black Hills National Forest. Preliminary development plans indicate that fewer than 200 surface acres will be involved in the mining and heap leaching of the ore. The ore occurs in both the Fall River and Lakota formations. The exploration to date has developed something in excess of two million tons of ore averaging -0.1% U308. About 75% of the ore is expected to be mined from underground with 25% coming from five to seven small pits. The surface mining will be extensions of previously mined areas with a disturbance of 35-40 new acres near 35-40 previously disturbed acres requiring a total reclamation of 70-80 acres. Several options for processing the ore including conventional milling by UCC, conventional milling in joint venture with another producer, and heap leaching are under consideration. This paper is concerned with the preliminary assessment of the heap leaching option based on the limited test work conducted on surface samples and on available cores from the deeper ones. The final design for a commercial operation will not be available until an underground bulk sample has been obtained and evaluated. Union Carbide has been operating heap leach facilities commercially since 1973 at Gas Hills, Wyoming and Maybell, Colorado. The Bureau of Mines conducted investigations on extracting phosphate values from fine-particle wastes generated during the mining and beneficiation of phosphate ore by leaching dried wastes using a H2SO4-methanol mixture. Although phosphatic clay waste contains up to a third of the phosphate originally present in the ore, recovery of these values represents a significant challenge due to the fine grain size of the material, the particles averaging less than one micrometer in diameter. Waste samples obtained from two Florida producers yielded phosphate extractions of 71 and 84 pct, respectively, when leached under ambient conditions and at a stoichiometric acid ratio of 1.4:l. Elevated temperatures did not improve the amount of phosphate extracted. Undesirable A12O3, Fe2O3, and PlgO impurities were largely rejected; higher grade wastes gave acids that meet established industry impurity standards and lower grade samples yielded acids that marginally fell short of the standard. Separation of the crude acids from the insoluble residues was accomplished via vacuum filtration through either filter paper or commercial filter cloths. Both filtration rates and solids retention were improved by the addition of 0.5 lb/ton of poly(viny1 acetate) (PVAc) or poly(ethy1ene oxide) (PEO) to the methanol-acid slurries. These results show potential for substantially increasing the reserves of an important domestic resource.
