THE milling practice at Mascot, at present, consists of dry crushing to 5/8 in., jigging, fine grinding, and flotation. The ore arrives at the mill from two mines, No. 1 mine shaft being located in the mill proper, and No. 2 mine shaft being situated about 2000 ft. east of the mill. No. 2 mine is served by a coarse-crushing plant and aerial tramway to the mill bins. In jigging the No. 2 mine ore, 50 per cent. of the mill feed is rejected by the jigs as a jig tailing ranging from 5/8 in. to 10 mesh; the balance of this ore, after removing a jig concentrate, is ground to flotation feed. In jigging No. 1 mine ore, approximately 80 per. cent. of the mill feed is rejected as a coarse jig tailing, and the balance is ground to flotation feed without the removal of a jig concentrate. The difference in the treatment is due to the fact that No. 2 mine ore carries a higher content of zinc than that from No. 1 mine. Of the total concentrates produced, 30 per cent. are made on jigs and 70 per cent. by flotation. At present, 1350 tons of No. 2 ore and 800 tons of No. 1 ore are treated each 24 hours. The recoveries for a typical week are as follows: Heads 3.55 Jig concentrates 61.30 Jig tails 0.80 Flotation concentrates 60.60 Flotation tails 0.09 Extraction 86.50 The associated minerals are a straw-colored sphalerite, dolomite, calcite, pyrite, quartz, and a small amount of greenockite, which occurs as a stain and sometimes small crystals along with sphalerite, but is comparatively rare. Numerous supergene manganese oxide deposits are developed inSouth China as a result of weathering of a thick sequence of Paleozoic marine Mn-bearing sedimentary rocks, consisting mainly of limestones, cherts and black shales that were intensely folded and faulted due to multiple episodes of tectonism since the late Triassic. The ore minerals are dominantly pyrolusite, cryptomelane, nsutite, lithiophorite and braunite. The supergene manganese ores contain Mn ranging from 20 to 44 wt per cent; manganese oxide deposits derived from cherts and black shales also contain recoverable levels of Co, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn. 40Ar/39Ar dating of potassium-bearing manganese oxides reveals that extensive supergene manganese ore formation started at least in the earliest Miocene and persisted to the Present. Ages of the deposits show a close correlation to tectonic stability, with the oldest in tectonically quiescent areas and the youngest in active areas that have subjected to continuous uplift and thus significant denudation. The prolonged wet and hot climate since Oligocene and the balance between weathering and erosion, which is parameter to the tectonic stability, are the ultimate controls on the formation and distribution of South China supergene manganese oxide deposits. Results of detailed analyses of four cores from the Threemile Canyon area in the P. R. Spring tar sand deposit in Utah are reported by the Bureau of Mines. The cores were obtained by the Utah Geological and Mineralogical Sur-vey as part of a l7-corehole evaluation program in the P. R. Spring, Hill Creek, and Rim Rock tar sand deposits. Average properties of the oil zone in the Threemile Canyon area as deter-mined from these cores are as follows: Oil saturation, 67.4 pet of pore volume; porosity, 29.2 pct; permeability before oil extraction, 133 millidarcies; and permeability after oil extraction, 2,855 millidarcies. Average net thickness of the oil zone is 23.8 ft and average depth to the top of the oil zone is 189 ft.

"INTRODUCTION Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (Anadarko) owns a region of oil shale properties acquired as part of the original Union Pacific Land Grant of the 1800’s in southern Wyoming. These holdings are greater than 2 million acres and occur throughout the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. One area was prioritized for further study by Anadarko Minerals called the Kinney Rim in the Washakie Basin due to low environmental impact, proximity to infrastructure, high ore grade, and low mining cost. The area is a low-overburden oil shale resource that can be developed using surface mining methods, processed by conventional surface retort, and placing waste rock disposal back on the bench for a design capacity of 10,000 barrel per day. The purpose of this papers is to present the results of environmental analysis and timeline, the mine plan, and surface ore processing to offer a resource-ready energy source.Mineral rights for the Kinney Rim area are owned by Anadarko, the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the State of Wyoming. Mining of oil shale for this study targets Anadarko owned mineral resources.GEOLOGY The study area is in the Green River and Washakie Basins in western Wyoming. The host geologic member is the Laney Oil Shale. Figure 2 illustrates the Laney shale within a generalized lithologic cross section.OIL SHALE LEASING The proposed Kinney Rim oil shale mining project is located in an area dominated by a 1 square mile checkerboard landownership pattern with every other section typically administered by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Anadarko. An error occurred in the preparation of Fig. 3, p. 249, of Basic Statistical Measures Used in Geo-chemical Investigations of Colorado Plateau Uranium Deposits. This figure shows the relation of the arithmetic mean: geometric mean ratio to the geometric deviation. Curves for the cases where n, the number of samples, is 100, 10, and 5 are too high with respect to the ordinate. The error is negligible at low geometric deviations, but becomes increasingly greater wi,th higher values of geometric deviation. As part of its risk management plan, the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority (RWA) is assessing the condition of its system of raw water conveyance tunnels and connecting pipelines. In 2006, the RWA inspected one of the system?s main tunnels, a 4-mi, 1950s-era tunnel that had not been inspected since its construction. The inspection team prepared extensively for the unknown conditions in the tunnel, and the inspection was completed safely and successfully. This paper describes the team?s pre-entry preparations, dewatering and ventilation efforts, surface-to-tunnel communication, access, physical inspection of the tunnel, and the lessons learned throughout the process. Additionally, this paper will preview planning for the subsequent inspections.

INTRODUCTION The utilization of longwall mining technology in the United States has steadily increased since the first longwall plow system was installed in 1952. At the errs of FY 1992, some 76 coal mines were employing longwall mining systems for coal extraction, and approximately 78 shearer and 3 plow faces are operating nationwide at any given time. Although the number of operating longwalls has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. During the same timeframe, the number of continuous miner sections has decreased by 13 pct., from approximately 1438 in FY 1988 to less than 1250 in FY 1992. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, the average production of longwall sections increased from approximately 2400 tons per shift (tps) in FY 1988 to more than 3100 tps FY 1992. In fact, the average production has more than tripled since 1978, when it was only 850 tps. Approximately 25 pct. of operating longwalls are capable of producing in excess of 4000 tps. Longwall production currently accounts for nearly 36 percent of U.S. underground coal production, compared to 4 pct. in 1978. These improvements are attributed to improved longwall equipment and increased availability, larger longwall panels and automation. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems more frequently than other mining system. Although dust levels have remained relatively unchanged over the past five years, averaging 1.6 mg/m3 and 1.9 mg/m3 based on results of operator and inspector sampling, respectively, during FY 1992, approximately 25 pct. of the operating longwalls were in noncompliance during any given bimonthly sampling cycle. Although modest gains in longwall dust control technology have been made, these have been overshadowed by significant increases in production rates. As more coal is mined, more dust is generated (Figure 1). Therefore, the increase in longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced which must be controlled. [ ] In view of the current compliance record, any efforts to further increase longwall output, as has been forecasted, must be accompanied by: (1) the reduction of dust levels at existing operations through the proper installation and maintenance of suitable engineering dust controls; and (2) the advancement of dust control technology for today's and future longwalls that will enable all face personnel o work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of respirable coal mine dust. MSHA'S RESPIRABLE DUST CONTROL PROGRAM Since 1972, federal regulations have required each coal mine operator to continuously maintain the average concentration of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere during each shift in the active workings at or below 2.0 mg/m3 through the application of environmental dust control methods. "This paper deals with the organization of the central office technical areas and the role played during the feasibility studies, construction and operating phases of Les Mines Selbaie.HistoryThe Engineering Department was originally formed as a part of the Exploration Department, to examine the feasibility of advanced exploration prospects being brought to the company. In 1968, with the discovery of the South Bay property in northwestern Ontario, the department became part of a Mining Division and was expanded, so that it could provide more advanced mine feasibility studies, control of construction engineering and procurement and initial mine design. As is generally the case, the mine design function was handled with in-house capability, while plant, mill and const ruction functions used outside consultants.The 1974 discovery of the Selbaie deposits, started a period o f growth in the capabilities o f the department. The complex nature of these deposits, required that skills were added in the mining, metallurgical and plant areas. During the early feasibility study period these skills were provided by the engineering company of the parent group, but when it was realized that production from the deposits was likely, permanent staff was added."

A graphic method has been devised for three-di-mensional analysis of hot deformation and for correlating the amount and directionality of the deformation with resulting directional properties. Deformation is evaluated in terms of dimensional change ratios referred to three orthogonal axes. Since all combinations of the three ratios can be represented in a triangular coordinate field with logarithmic scales, a two-dimensional chart of extent of deformation and degree of asymetry is possible. The entire gamut of shape changes from upsetting through flat-rolling to rod-rolling is accommodated. The resulting coordinate system is a base upon which can be represented the properties of the wrought products measured in the directions of the axes employed fir evaluating the deformation. When property data are available for many types and amounts of deformation, a three-dimensional figure can be constructed, and the projection of this figure is referred to as a ''3d'' chart. Experience in using such charts to plan fabricating operations for a variety of thick-section forged and rolled products of heat-treated aluminum alloys has verified its practical value for optimizing directionality relationships. MechANICAL anisotropy of thick section products of heat-treatable aluminum alloys is recognized by producers and users of these products, and the extent of the directional differences is apparent in property tabulations included in handbooks, standards, and specifications.' Attention has also been directed to the existence of important directional differences in the resistance of these products to stress-corrosion cracking. Metallurgical structure factors responsible for these directional differences include, among other possibilities, shape and alignment of grains, voids and nonmetallic inclusions (when present), volume fraction and spatial distribution of secondary phase particles and solid-state precipitates, crystal-lographic textures, and Bauschinger effect. The contributions of the individual factors vary with alloy composition, heat-treated temper, type of working process (forging, rolling, extrusion), and the amount and directional nature of the deformation. In general, the cast ingot used as the starting material for producing these wrought products exhibits only a modest degree of directionality. A monotonic and continuous transition from this nearly isotropic state with progressive hot deformation would appear probable, assuming that the working temperature is sufficiently high to cause continuous dynamic recovery. Several years ago a project was undertaken to evaluate the effects of hot deformation and metallurgical structures on the directionality of thick wrought aluminum alloy products, and the method to be described was developed as an analytical tool in this investigation. DIRECTION NOMENCLATURE The nomenclature system adopted by industry for the three mutually perpendicular directions employed in testing aluminum alloy products includes four terms: "longitudinal", "transverse", "long transverse", and "short transverse". These terms are conventionally related to the external geometry of the product but also by implication to the deformation and resulting metallurgical structure. Occasions arise in which through use of unusual fabricating methods, intentional or otherwise, the structure does not have the usual relationship to external geometry or may be very complex because of inhomogeneity of deformation throughout the piece. The longitudinal direction is generally parallel to the primary rolling direction or to the direction of extrusion. In the case of forging, it is parallel to the direction of maximum extension (not maximum "working" or "flow", as frequently stated). The term transverse is applied to any direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction in a product having symmetry about the longitudinal axis, and generally, although not always, the deformation to produce these forms is nearly symmetrical in the transverse plane. This term then may be applied to a round, square, hexagon, or other polygonal, symmetrical shape produced by extrusion or rolling or by forging, if produced by a simple, symmetrical drawing procedure. Introduction Coeur d'Alene Mines Corp.'s largest precious metals property is located in the historic Rochester Mining District 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Lovelock, NV. The property encountered cold weather operational problems soon after its fall start-up in 1986 due to its elevation of over 1830 m (6000 ft). The problem of ice buildup on the heaps because of sprayed solution application was faced immediately. It was felt that allowing ice to build up all winter long until a spring thaw was impractical due to the large area under leach. Further, the operating cost and delivery schedule for a solution heating system was unacceptable. The development and installation of a leach solution distribution system using drip emitters made efficient, cost-effective winter operation possible. Other benefits of this system have also been observed and are discussed here. General process description 15,422 kt/day (17,000 stpd) of - 1.27-cm (-1 /2-in) crushed ore from the three-stage crushing plant are delivered to the leach pad using 77.1 t (85 st) rear dump haul trucks. The ore is drifted into place with a D-9 bulldozer. Leach panels are contiguous and are approximately 8861 m'(90,000 square ft) in area built in 6-m (20-ft) lifts. New panels are built on top of older areas to a final height of 61 m (200 ft). Each panel is ripped and cross-ripped prior to leaching. Barren solution is distributed to the heap using drip emitters at rates of 0.02 to 0.41 L/min/m2 (0.0005 to 0.01 gpm per sq ft), depending on the age of the panels. The pH of the leach solution is 10.7 with a cyanide concentration of 0.75 kg/t (1.5 lb per st). Approximately 50% of the silver and 80% of the gold are finally recovered. Pregnant solution percolates though the heap and flows by gravity into one of two 9.46 ML (2.5 million gal) pregnant solution ponds. The solution is then pumped to a conventional Merrill-Crowe process plant. Clarification takes place in three 9464 L/min (2,500 gpm) capacity filters. The solution is then pumped to a packed vacuum deareation tower for the removal of dissolved oxygen. Typical deareated solution contains 0.7 parts per million dissolved oxygen. Precipitation of gold and silver is accomplished by adding a zinc dust slurry to the deareated solution at the suction of the filter press feed pump. Precipitated gold and silver are recovered in three recessed plate and frame filter presses. Barren solution is discharged into a 11.7 ML (3.1 million gal) pond where cyanide makeup occurs. This solution is pumped back to the heap for further leaching. The precipitate filter cake, containing approximately 75% dore (Ag + Au), is then fluxed with anhydrous borax, soda ash, sodium nitrate and fluorspar to yield a neutral, bisilicate slag. The fluxed precipitate is then charged into a propane-fired melting furnace and heated to 1150° C (2100° F) for 3 1/2 hours. Slag and dore bullion are poured into conical cast iron pots yielding buttons of 800 to 1000 troy oz. The dore typically contains 98.5% silver and 1 % gold. Slag is crushed and tabled to recover the trapped dore blebs and beads. Concentrate from the table is returned to the furnace. Table tails are sent to the crushing circuit and out to the leach pad. Solution application The area kept under leach at Rochester is approximately 130 000 m2 (1.4 million sq ft). Barren solution is delivered to the pad at 21.2 kL/min (5600 gpm) for a resultant application rate of 0.16 L/min/m2 (0.004 gpm per sq ft). A traditional solution sprinkling system using No. 12 Senninger Wobblers with individual pressure regulators was installed at the onset of leaching activities. The Wobblers were placed at 9.1-m (30¬ft) staggered centers and were fed off of a gridwork of Yellowmine plastic piping. Solution flow rates were moni¬tored to each panel. The onset of cold weather with an average nighttime temperature of -12° C (10° F) made it apparent that continual operation would not be possible with the sprinklers. A significant amount of ice was built up on top of the heap, making maintenance and pipe removal dangerous, if not impossible. Leach solution application was restricted to daylight hours to inhibit ice formation. Process plant flow rates were reduced to maintain steady-state operating conditions. However, as daylight temperatures dropped below freezing, ice continued to accumulate due to the sprays. Besides the obvious operating hazards brought on by the growing icefield, there was also the potential environmental hazard associated with an early thaw melting the ice too rapidly for the solution containment facilities. One other option for preventing ice formation was heating of the barren solution prior to spraying. Initial plant design allowed for expansion of the propane storage and distribution system as well as modification of the barren piping for a solution heater. This option was not exercised because the operating costs for an adequate system would have been prohibitive, and timely delivery of a system was not available. An investigation was conducted on the various drip irriga¬tion products available, since subsurface solution applicators would eliminate ice formation altogether. Systems utilizing external flow emitters were ruled out because of their ten¬dency to clog when buried. Emitter systems using perforated tubing were also eliminated from consideration due to their inability to adequately control flow over required lengths of tubing. An in-line emitter system was finally selected which demonstrated clog resistance and adequate flow control, enabling direct burial.

Experimental animal studies comparing asbestos and non-asbestos varieties of tremolite indicate tremolite asbestos is markedly more carcinogenic. By direct analogy, the differences in carcinogenicity between tremolite asbestos and non-asbestos prismatic tremolite should be the same for the other types of amphibole that also crystallize in the asbestos and non-asbestos habits. The earliest of the experiment animal studies, done more than 25 years ago, have design limitations by modern standards including the use of injection or surgical implantation as the route of administration rather than the more relevant route of inhalation. However, the differences in the carcinogenicity of amphibole asbestos and non-asbestos amphiboles are sufficiently large to be clearly discernable even with the study limitations. Together with later studies on these and related minerals, there is strong evidence of a much lower hazard associated with the shorter, thicker fibers of the non-asbestos amphiboles, than is found for the asbestos analogues of the same mineral. It is possible that the non-asbestos amphiboles are no more hazardous than other silicate minerals widely considered nuisance dusts. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. MINING interests in the Western mountains are very seriously affected by the danger to property and life from destructive snowslides and avalanches. This is a danger which the miner has largely brought upon himself by an improvident stripping of the timber from the mountain slopes, and, therefore, he might be expected to take an interest in the reforestation of the areas thus devastated. A canvass was lately undertaken by the writer to ascertain approximately the extent of the damage suffered from this source, but the difficulty of obtaining reliable data has proved too great to permit, as yet, even an approximation. So much, however, is certain : that the loss of life is considerable, and that much property is destroyed almost every winter. True, neither the number of avalanches, nor their destructiveness, nor the amount of loss compares with what Switzerland experiences. This is due not only to the greater precipitousness of the Alps and to different climatic conditions, but also to the fact that in Switzerland a larger number of settlements is exposed to these dangers. A very complete and interesting official report on the very numerous and destructive avalanches occurring in Switzerland during the season of 1887-1888 has just been published as a contribution to the inquiry, whether and how these dangers can be averted. Peculiar weather-conditions, in addition to heavy falls of snow, were the reasons for the frequency of the phenomenon during that winter. This report records 1094 avalauches, by which 850 houses were destroyed or severely damaged; 84 persons and 752 cattle were buried; traffic on railroads and on highways was greatly interrupted, and the damage to personal property alone was valued at over $100,000. One of these snow-masses covered about half an acre, with a cone 250 feet in height. During the same year in Tyrol the number of avalanches was 3647. COMBUSTION of coal and transfer of heat from flames and gases to boiler surfaces continue to be of great interest to engineers here and abroad. Numerous investigations have been in progress to improve furnace and boiler performance and economy. The importance of better understanding of the processes and opportunities for improvement is apparent when it is remembered that heat from at least 500 million tons of coal a year the world over is being transferred to boiler water at efficiencies ranging mostly between 50 and 90 pct. Even slight gains in efficiency, economy, and labor saving become very significant when multiplied by the enormous quantity of fuel consumed. Also the competitive position of the large coal, oil, and gas industries in satisfying the fuel consumers is greatly affected by the achievements made through technical progress with each fuel. This paper is part of a continuing activity of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to extend the knowledge of coal utilization for steam generation and to seek promising directions for future research and development in cooperation with others. Particularly in the latter regard, numerous interviews were held during the last three years to seek the experience and advice of boiler and combustion-equipment manufacturers, electric-utility executives, and fuel engineers. A wealth of published information was also reviewed, which together with the interviews pointed to the advisability of further work on ash and sulphur control. For the present purpose a number of factors important to efficient heat liberation and recovery have been grouped as follows: 1—combustion, temperatures, and rates of heat liberation; 2—radiation, convection, and furnace and boiler configuration; 3—sponge ash, slag, and hard-bonded deposits; 4— low-temperature deposits and corrosion (cooling flue gas below dew point and air-pollution control); 5—the limitations of coal cleaning and boiler size and cost as related to fuel characteristics; 6—future possibilities and conclusions. The development of combustion apparatus for power boilers is progressing at a lively pace. There has been no letup in improvements in design of pulverized-coal-fired boilers, and there is a strong trend at present toward improving dry-bottom units. Spreader stokers with overfire jets and dust collectors as standard equipment are gaining favor. Less than 10 years in commercial use, cyclone burners are going into numerous installations here' and abroad.' Underfeed and traveling-grate stokers have long since been developed for heavy-duty operation, yet new developments in overfire jets and humidification of air blast have improved their performance. A water-cooled vibrating-grate stoker of German origin is being introduced into the United States and Canada." The primary objectives of an ideal coal combustion device are: capacity to burn the variety and sizes of coals likely to be economically available during the life of the unit; capacity to burn the coals automatically for a wide load range and rapid load fluctuations and to burn the coals completely to CO2, H2O, and SO2, which means without smoke and cinders, or carbon in the refuse; capacity to control and discharge all the ash in final granular form without ash adhesion to walls or tubes, and without flue dust; minimum furnace volume; minimum labor and maintenance; low initial and operating cost. Regardless of the method of burning, the gaseous products of coal combustion are N2, CO2, O2, H20, and SO?. By way of illustration, the coal analyses in Table I is assumed from an installation described by E. McCarthy.' When coal is burned with 20 pct excess air (theoretical air, 9.23 lb per lb of coal), the quantities of combustion gas shown in Table II are produced. In addition, the gases carry particles of fly ash, unconsumed cinders, soot particles, and small but significant amounts of vaporized oxides and sulphates of sodium, potassium, lithium, phosghorous, iron, and other metals. In recent years, germanium, one of the rare metals found in coal, has been shown to oxidize and vaporize at combustion temperatures and to be concentrated by reconden-sation at lower temperatures." Pulverized coal and cyclone flames" have peak temperatures of 3000' to 3500°F. Temperatures in fuel beds of large underfeed stokers reach maxima of 3000°F, sufficient to fuse almost any ash and to volatilize some of it. These peak temperatures are above the optimum necessary for rapid combustion, but they hasten heat transfer for ignition as well as boiler heat absorption. Furnace and gas temperatures increase with combustion air preheat. Low excess air has the same effect.
