Asimismo, el diseño de la voladura debe optimizar las operaciones posteriores tales como chancado, zarandas, clasificación, molienda, flotación y lixiviación. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la metodología de optimización de procesos de la miina Antamina hasta la oncentradora a través de la recolección de datos de campo, caracterización, modelación matemática y simulación de las operaciones, donde además se utilizan sistemas de rastreamento de minerales y de análisis continuo de imágenes.

In cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines and the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology, the University of Idaho offers in the School of Mines a number of fellowships. These fellowships are open to college graduates who have had good training in mining, metallurgy, or chemistry, and who are qualified to undertake research work. The income of each fellowship is $720 a year for the 12 mo. beginning July 1, 1919. Fellows will register as students in the University of Idaho and become candidates for the degree of Master of Science in Mining or Metallurgy (unless this or an equivalent degree has been earned). Their class work-will he directed by the heads of the departments of instruction, but the greater portion of their time will be spent in research work under the direction of the Bureau of Mines staff resident at the University. The purpose f this work is to undertake the solution of definite problems confronting the mining and metallurgical industries of the State of Idaho. For 1919-20 the following subjects are being considered: 1. Flotation-with especial reference to differential separation of various minerals. 2. Availability of western wood oils for flotation purposes. 3. Treatment of the complex gold-silver ores of southern Idaho. 4. Ore-dressing problems. 5. Mining problems. First of all I will explain the method of preparing the ore1 ; for since Nature usually creates metals in an impure state, mixed with earth, stones, and solidified juices, it is necessary to separate most of these impurities from the ores as far as can be, before they are smelted, and therefore I will now describe the methods by which the ores are sorted, broken with hammers, burnt, crushed with stamps, ground into powder, sifted, washed, roasted, and calcineda.

PRIOR to 1908 the oil production in the State of California, had been almost entirely a heavy fuel, oil, with a high flash point, hut changed within a-short period to a large percentage of refining oil with a low flash, by reason of the coming in of the Santa Maria field, the Midway field, and the increased production of the Fullerton field. This is clearly shown in the following tabulation of California's production: Year Barrels . The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3 m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.   The tailings impoundment is built with an underdrainage system that collects groundwaters and waters that seep through the impoundment. The embankment and impoundment are both built to withstand the Maximum Credible Earthquake and the Probable Maximum Flood. Tailings are treated to remove cyanide and to decrease metal solubility to reduce long term risk to water quality after mining. A state-of-the-art water treatment plant is utilised to treat water from the underdrainage system and water decanted from the top of the tailings pond and stormwaters to remove residual cyanide and metals to extremely high standards with a great deal of reliability and at reasonable cost. Closure of the facility addresses long term post mining water quality issues, and rehabilitation of the area with wildlife habitat as a priority.

Solid-state electrochemical measurements by three alternative experimental procedures were made with the cell FeO, Fe3O4 |Zro.85Cao.15O1.85 |Cu| Zr0.85CaO.15O1.85 | FeO, Fe304 to establish the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper in the temperature range 800" to 1030°C. The solubility of oxygen in solid copper and the diflusivity of oxygen in solid copper Dgu = 1.7 X 10-2 exp(-16,000/RT) Cm2/sec were determined and confirmed in alternative experiments. The enthalpy of solution of oxygen in solid copper equals —10,000 cal per mole; the partial excess entropy of the oxygen atoms in the Cu-O dilute solution is approximately the same as that found for interstitial atoms in other metals. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper is consistent with that expected for an interstitial atom. RELIABLE values for the saturation solubility N(s) and diffusivity DO of oxygen in solid copper have not been unambiguously established in the literature. Following three early determinations by others,1"3 Rhines and Mathewson4 reported that the solubility of oxygen in solid copper increased from 0.007 at. pct 0 at 600°C to about 0.015 pct at 1050°C. Phillips and skinner,, using essentiially the same analytical procedure, reported that the solid solubility increases from 0.0018 at. pct 0 at 550°C to about 0.0075 pct at 1050OC. The only previous value for the diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper was reported by Ransley.6 Ransley deoxidized Cu-Cu2O alloys in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide gas to yield a solubility-diffusivity product. He used the solubility data of Rhines and Mathewson to calculate the diffusivity values. Another method for obtaining the solubility-diffusivity product (N(s) DO) is by measuring the widths of internal-oxidation zones in copper alloys as reported by Verfurth and Rapp.7 However, the calculated N(S)Do products depend upon the alloy content of the specimen, so that the internal oxidation of copper alloys does not follow ideal internal oxidation kinetics. As a result, unequivocal values for the N(s) DO product were not obtained by this procedure. A solid-state coulometric titration technique similar to that employed in this work was introduced by C. Wagner8 to study the dependence on silver activity of the Ag/S ratio in silver sulfide in the temperature range of 160" to 300°C. Similar experiments have been carried out by C. Wagner and co-workers9-11 to study the stoichiometry range of silver and copper tellurides, cuprous sulfide, and cuprous selenide. Numerous authors have carried out electrochemical measurements with a solid oxygen-ion-conducting electrolyte to determine the solubility and/or diffusivity of dissolved oxygen in several liquid metals.12-l6 Rickert and Steiner17,18 have used solid-state electrochemical measurements to determine the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver from 760" to 900°C. Two different cell geometries were used. In the cell of linear geometry Fe, FeO | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [1] oxygen diffused from the interior of the silver electrode to the silver/electrolyte interface where the oxygen activity had been lowered from a fixed initial value to practically zero by the application of voltage to the cell. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver was determined from the solution of the diffusion equation and the time dependence of the cell current. However, this determination of the diffusion coefficient depended upon a knowledge of the solubility of oxygen in solid silver. A cylindrical geometry was used for the cell Pt, O2(Po2 = 0.21 atm) | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [II] which also allowed the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver to be determined. These values were in agreement with other available data.l9 Recently, Raleigh20,21 used a method involving the measurement of diffusion-limited currents in a cell involving the AgBr solid electrolyte to determine the diffusion coefficient of silver in Ag-Au alloys at 400°C. Diffusivity values on the order of l0-14 sq cm per sec were measured in the alloy composition range 10 to 60 at. pct Ag in a single experiment. From numerous electrical conductivity and galvanic cell measurements,9'22"26 the solid solution Zr0.85 Ca0.15 O1.85 has been established as an electrolyte with predominant oxygen ion conduction over a wide range of intermediate and high oxygen activities. For interrelating the thermodynamics and the kinetics of the dissolution of oxygen in solid copper in this investigation, a galvanic cell was constructed with FeO-Fe3O4 as the reversible reference electrode, the Zr0.85Ca0.15 O1.85 electrolyte, and a pure copper specimen under-saturated in oxygen as the other electrode. Without adequate soil available, it is difficult to rehabilitate a large area of acid mine waste dump with sustainable plant communities, which has a strong potential acid generation. In the present project, paste tailings capping method has been put forward to reconstruct plant ecosystem on acid mine waste rock dump. This rehabilitation method uses paste tailings as capillary break and plant growth media. The tailings used contained 26.3 per cent of particles of less than 20 ¦m which satisfy the requirement of grain of paste tailings preparation. The tailings are not acid- producing materials. In addition to Cu, total contents of Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, As and Ni in tailings are lower than those in local soil. Paste tailings concentration 70 per cent ~ 72 per cent was prepared by concentrating ten per cent tailings by using polypropylenecrylic sodium as flocculation. The potential pollution risks are low by using paste tailings as capillary break layer. Plants directly grown in the tailings did not particularly accumulate Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, As, Ni in roots, stem and leaves, which were 0.01 ~ 1.6 times of those grown in soil.CITATION:Yibin, Z, Lianbi, Z, Bin, P and Youhong, Z, 2012. "The Early YearsThe Grand Lake coal fields in New Brunswick undoubtedly can claim the distinction of being the first part of North America from which coal was mined and exported. The diaries of the Governor of Massachusetts during the first half of the 17th century clearly establish this fact. There is also a reference in the Massachusetts Colonial Records which indicate that coal exports to New England were carried on as early as 1639.It has generally been believed that Cape Breton mined and exported the first coal; but no account has yet been found to show that this took place earlier than 1676. Both at Grand Lake and Cape Breton the coal was near the surface and removed by hand.When the country passed entirely into British control, Joseph Garrison, a grantee of Maugerville in 1765 moved to Jemseg. While surveying the north side of Grand Lake he discovered outcroppings of coal on the shore of the lake and further inland along the banks of streams. It was he who named Newcastle Creek in reference to Newcastle in England, which was widely known for its coal mines. Joseph Garrison died in 1783, the same year that an influx of United Empire Loyalists increased settlement in Newcastle Creek in the area now known as Minto. Many Loyalists also settled on the shores on both sides of Grand Lake.At a number of points where streams cut channels through the overlying strata, the coal seams were exposed and it was at such outcroppings that the early operations were carried on. A tunnel was driven in the seam from the foot of the bank, affording both an outlet for the coal and natural drainage from the workings. The coal was loaded into boxes and wheeled over wooden tracks to a point on the surface where it could be dumped into wagons and hauled either direct to destination or to where it could be loaded into boats and conveyed via Grand Lake, Jemseg and Saint John river to points of distribution.In the latter part of the 18th century and first years of the 19th century, farmers were undisturbed by mining the coal found on their lands. This was soon to change and resulted in many years of contention between landowners and the Legislative Assembly.New Brunswick became a separate province from Nova Scotia in 1784 and the seat of government moved from Saint John to Fredericton in 1788. The new province had its first priorities; the establishment of counties, the building of roads, and the development of its natural resources. From 1805, records of coal and land development are fairly complete. These records show the increasing interest of the Province in developing the coal fields. This interest resulted in the granting of coal leases to many friends of the government, without any regard for the wishes of the farmers who owned and had occupied the land for many years. The farmers fought back with lawsuits and other forms of dissension but with little success. By the end of the 19th century there were very few farm operators left in the area."

The nickel-chromium alloys of importance are those containing iron and those free from iron. The most important alloys containing iron, with regard to high tonnage, are the nickel-chromium steels. Straight nickel steel was introduced about the year 1889, but it was not until 1895, when it was found that the addition of chromium greatly increased the strength and resistance to shock, that nickel-chromium steels came into use. The three types of nickel-chromium steels developed at this time were: Type 1, containing 3.,50 per cent. nickel and 1.50 per cent. chromium; type 2, containing 2.00 per cent. nickel and 1.00 per cent. chromium; and type 3, containing 1.50 per cent. nickel and 0.50 per cent. chromium.

The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

A NOTABLE amount of fossil resin exists in many of the bituminous coal beds of Utah. The upper part of these show a marked concentration of resin, which occurs primarily in the fracture seams. In general, these seams are less than 1/8 in. thick, but it is not uncommon to find coal with areas as thick as 3/8inches. The resin is of the hard kauri variety, with coloration varying from deep blood red to lemon yellow and almost colorless. There is also an almost black variety, which is not readily soluble in the same solvents as the lighter colored resins. These resins are valuable for many industrial purposes. When refined, they are suitable for uses similar to those for which lac resins are usually employed. They are particularly desirable for preparing dielectric varnishes. They are also desirable in preparing printing inks, waterproofing agents, special synthetic rubbers and rubber cements. They are especially suitable as an admixture in synthetic rubbers and cements, as they supply the essential tackiness the synthetics lack. Completely soluble in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Insoluble in alcohols, ethyl acetate and other commonly used alcohols and esters. Compatible with natural and synthetic rubbers, chlorinated and cyclized rubbers, waxes, vegetable oils, mineral oils, rosin, ester gum, phenolic and modified phenolic resins and other natural and synthetic resins of like solvent solubility. The recovery and refining of these fossil resins has been the subject of much research work and has intrigued many investigators. Broadly speaking, the problem involves separation of the resin from the coal into a very high-grade concentrate, and subsequent treatment of this concentrate to produce an acceptable refined resin for its various usages. "High pressure (up to 50 MPa) isotropic compression tests were performed on marble, gneiss and sandstone specimens, of which represents the typical rocks, to investigate isotropic compression deformation characterization at room temperature. Experimental data with respect to volume change in loading and unloading are presented. An apparent volume change inflection point (sensitive stress) was observed at a lower pressure range for porous sandstone, indicating that the elastic-plastic behaviour arising in the isotropic compression stage, but for tight crystalline rock, the sensitive stress is much higher, not probed prior to 50 MPa. The irrecoverable volumetric strain in the unloading can be seen for sandstone as well. The anisotropic deformation was discussed in terms of the axial and radial strain measurement. It was found that essential features of mechanical anisotropy are the irreversible in deformation range. The deformation feature in the isotropic compression tests is a very complex issue due to the factors concerning the stress history, unloading in sampling and in-situ stress. INTRODUCTIONThe isotropic or hydrostatic compression condition that stress is compressive and has the same magnitude for all direction, which is expressed as s1=s2=s3 in principal stress space. A yield locus of soils subjected to the isotropic and anisotropic compression was widely known, for instance Cam Clay model, which forms a closure cap model. However, the similar isotropic compression yield curves for rocks, especially for hard rock, was not established due to the geo-stress in the rock mass is much less than the socalled isotropic yield stress. And hence, the previous experimental studies on the hard rock have been made tend to on the stress-strain-strength relationship (Handin & Hager, 1957; Edmond & Paterson, 1972; Menéndez et al., 1996). Perhaps the yield curves related to an increasing in the hydrostatic pressure is not forced to construct for hard rocks, undoubtedly, the deformation data in this processing is valuable to assess the bulk module (Fabre & Gustkiewicz, 1997), anisotropy (Niandou et al., 1997), field stress (Hakala et al., 2007). Furthermore, many rocks store much elastic volume strain energy link to the hydrostatic pressure exerted, following a deviator stress applying, to drive the unstable brittle fracture for hard rock. Latter was studied to interpret the incentive of rock burst. However, volume change characteristic in the isotropic compression behaviour have been scarcely studied experimentally to our knowledge, less application related to the fracture in hard rock as well. The mechanical behaviour in the isotropic compression of hard rock is notably affected by the original structure anisotropy, stress history and stress condition before sampling, all of which need reasonably assess. It is also a useful understanding to study isotropic compression that elastic and plastic volume change in the isotropic loading and unloading, and the micro crack evolution throughout it."

Edmund Gybbon SpilsbURy, mining and metallurgical engineer of international reputation, died suddenly of heart failure on May 28, 1920, in the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, following an operation for cataract, which had been successfully performed a few days before. Mr. Spilsbury was one of the early members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, which he joined in 1873. During all this time he contributed freely of his time and ability. He was manager of the Institute from 1885 to 1887, vice-president, 1893 and 1894, and president in 1896. He was also a member of the Engineers Club, of which he was president in 1916 and 1917, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, American Electrochemical Society and the Rocky Mountain Club of New York. He was a trustee of the United Engineering Society from 1916 to his death; a member of United Engineering Society Library Board from its organization in 1913 until his death, being its chairman from 1918 to January, 1920; a trustee of Engineering Foundation Board from 1916 until his death; and member of the John Fritz Medal Board of Award. He was also a member of the Division of Engineering of the National Research Council. Born in London, England, in 1845, Mr. Spilsbury went to Liege, Belgium, at an early age, where he received his preliminary education. For his technical education he attended the University of Louvain, Belgium, graduating in 1862, and later he took a practical course at Clausthal, Germany. In 1864 he became assistant engineer for the Eschweiler Zinc Co., of Stolberg, one of the largest miners and smelters of lead and zinc in the world at that time, and the next year he took charge of that company's mines and works on the Island of Sardinia. From Sardinia he went to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. In 1867 he entered the service of McClean & Stilman, of London, and had charge of the construction of the iron gates for the Surrey Commercial Docks. In 1868 he was designing engineer with J. Casper Harkort, and had charge of most of the detail work of the Keulenberg Bridge in Holland, the Danube Bridge in Vienna, and the Rhine Bridge at Düsseldorf. In 1870 Mr. Spilsbury came to the United States to investigate the lead and zinc resources for the Austro-Belgian Metallurgical Co. After spending two years in this work, he resigned in order to practice in the United States, and he was the first to introduce the Harz system of ore

The basic principles of mineral valuation were recognised and propounded at the beginning of this century and have remained virtually unchanged since then. Valuation is seen as a two part process commencing with a technical examination of the mineral property followed by a manipulation of the results of the technical examination in order to determine the monetary value of the project. A thorough and competent technical examination was seen then and remains now as the essential but not sufficient foundation for reliable valuation. All authors stressed the need to maintain the integrity of the data base and to ensure adequate coverage of all relevant aspects. The monetary valuation process through most of the first half of this century was mainly based on the Hoskold two rate method, derived from the formulae for valuing annuities but modified to provide explicitly for recovery of capital. Though the basic principles of valuation have not changed significantly, the means of implementing the components of the technical examination, the styles of deposits being evaluated and the mechanisms of monetary valuation have changed dramatically. Despite all the technological improvements, however, mineral valuations are still as apt to vary from realised performance as at any time in the past. As well, mineral property valuations are now being extended to cover all assets of potential value, including valuation of exploration tenements with or without identified resources. Valuation of exploration tenements will continue to be one of the most difficult and contentious of valuation tasks.

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is becoming more popular as the reserves of good quality, mineable coal are starting to diminish, and yet the global energy demand from coal is still increasing. The purpose of this research project was to investigate cavity formation within a coal block due to the combustion reactions in the context of UCG. The cavity plays a pivotal role in the UCG process, as it is essentially the gasification reactor. Cavity formation in an in situ gasification process using the forward combustion linking method (FCL) had been investigated, and a laboratory model was created to simulate the process. The experiment was performed by drilling a U-shaped tunnel into a coal block, which was then combusted internally with air that was fed through an injection hole. A heating element (at approximately 500°C) was used to supply the required heat for combustion at the base of the injection well. The coal blocks were analysed using micro-focus X-ray tomography. The tomography results showed that the coal tended to crack along the bedding plane after a short duration of combustion, due to either the formation of clinker or the expansion of swelling vitrinite along the horizontal tunnel. The deposit was thicker at the base of the injection well compared to the base of the production well; this may have been caused by the turbulence of the air flow and the relatively high oxygen concentration at the base of the injection well. A comparison of the results with work by Daggupati et al. (2010) showed the same trend, despite the slightly different methodology applied.

Kinetic Dependence of Refractory Gold Sulfide Biooxidation Using Different Microorganism Association In this investigation, refractory sulfide concentrate from a deposit located in northern Russia was treated using biohydrometallurgical technology. The objective of this work was to compare the accelerated refractory sulfide concentrate biooxidation abilities of the pure and mixed mesophilic and moderately termophilic acidophiles cultures. Pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and two associations of the: Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans + Leptospirillum + Sulfobacillus were used in this investigation. Results of sulfide concentrate bioleaching were analysed using the enzyme catalysis theory. Different effective kinetics parameters were calculated for Michaelis-Menten equation, such as Michaelis' constant and maximum rate of the enzymatic reaction. It was shown that the increase of microorganisms' species decreased Michaelis' constant. Lower Michaelis' constant characterises increasing bacteria ferment affinity to substrate (treated concentrate). As a result, the rates of sulfide minerals biooxidation have increased. This investigation has demonstrated that cultures of the different microorganism species, including moderately termophilic, allow to enhance different parameters of the biohydrometallurgical technology for the refractory gold sulfide concentrate treatment. We can see that bacterial leaching stage duration decreased and sulfide minerals oxidation increased. When the bioresidues were subjected to the hydrometallurgical stage, which includes aeration and sorption cyanidation, the operation factors were also enhanced. The decrease of aeration duration and the growth of the precious metal extraction by sorption cyanidation was achieved. Cyanide consumption was also reduced. The results of this investigation were used in design of an industrial plant.

When a thin film of volatile matter is deposited under vacuum on a polished coal surface, and the coated surface is examined microscopically in piano--polarized reflected light, colour changes are observed characteristic of the various macerals present. The colour changes appear to be mainly due to interference between light reflected at the upper surface of the film and at the film/coal interface. A variety of source materials for the volatile matter required have been tested, including powdered bituminous coal, coal tars, boron oxide, and certain resins.

The evolution of surface mine layout configuration is a function of the schedules and sequence of material excavation within the optimized layouts. The production schedules and sequence of materials movement from multi-bench and multi-face operations are difficult to plan and execute. However, the ability to maximize the profit or net present value of an orebody is largely dependent on the mining schedule. The mining schedule will determine the life of the mine, the projected cashflows, and the investment requirements over the mine life. The pit geometries, pit expansion rates and the periodic volume of materials from different benches in a multi-bench, multi-face open pit mine determine the equipment requirements. The volume of materials excavated, as well as pit layout changes from circular and elliptical geometries of an oil sands mine were modeled using analytical geometric and parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) and solved within Matlab. The results show that the geometric values are almost the same as those obtained from PDEs for different pit configurations. The economic analysis shows that both the current mining system (CMS) and the cyclic excavator conveyor belt control system (CycEx CBCS) are viable with high NPV (= $3.20 × 1010), PI (> 19%) and IRR (> 29.02%) with short discounted payback periods (= 3.24 months). The CycEx CBCS option is more economic than the CMS option. Its NPV is 1.27 times that of the CMS option. The PI and IRR for the CycEx CBCS option are respectively 2.24 and 1.13 times that of the CMS option. As well, the CycEx CBCS option has almost half the DPBP of the CMS option. The CMS option has an operating cost of $1.386 per tonne ($2.774/barrel) while that of the CycEx CBCS option is $0.779/tonne ($1.558/barrel). These results show that the CycEx CBCS option is the better option for mining companies working on oil sands deposits to invest in.
