The amount of published literature in the field of mechanical properties of magnesium alloys is not great; particularly with respect to rolled alloys. Haughton and Prytherchl have summarized most of the articles to 1937, including their own work on sheet. Although many papers can be found dealing with the technology of magnesium and the alloys now in commercial use, there does not seem to be any work dealing exclusively with the variation in properties of rolled alloys as caused by changes in alloy composition. Comparison of published data reveals considerable discrepancies in properties of alloys of the same composition, probably due to differences in the details of working and heat-treating followed by different workers. The purpose of this paper is to study the properties of alloys in conditions where the effects of such differences have been eliminated. It is well known that the strength and ductility of metals are functions of the working and heat-treating they have received, as well as of their chemical composition. In comparing alloys with respect to these properties, therefore, all possible combinations of the variables of the fabrication procedure ought to be carried out on each alloy. One or more of these treatments mill produce the highest ductility, or strength, or both. These highest properties would then be selected as characteristic of each alloy, and alloys would be compared on the basis of those properties. Thus a separation of the effect of composition and that of workiiig and heat-treating would be achieved. In this paper, however, a compromise with completeness has been made by carrying out a restricted number of treatments. As a consequence, the properties obtained are not necessarily the best that the alloy is capable of exhibiting; but since all alloy3 have been treated by the same method, the results ought to be comparable. The elements selected for the study comprise a class that will alloy easily with magnesium, and that are reblatively cheap. Each was added in different amounts, up to a limit that varied with the element.

I have attended these meetings, every year, since 1926 and have served on both the Pittsburgh and the National Executive Committees, so that I am fully aware - of the ruling of this organization regarding, "No Papers by Vendors". Since I am now classified as a VENDOR, I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the invitation to formally discuss these very interesting papers --all of which herald the coming of an entirely new era in the manufacture of quality steels. I also appreciate the references by Mr. Mosser and Dr. Swinkels to my first paper on the oxygen probe which was presented at the meeting of this group, here in Chicago, in 1966 and was subsequently published in the NOH Proceedings of that year. "Under existing conditions in the treatment of oxidized lead ores containing small quantities of molybdenum no provision is made for the recovery of the molybdenum. Considerable quantities of this important element are lost in the slags of the lead smelters and constitute an economic waste. There is little or no probability that slag dumps containing molybdenum in small quantities could be economically treated for the recovery of the element, and steps for the prevention of waste in this respect must be taken prior to smelter treatment.Wulfenite, lead molybdate (PbMo04), and molybdite, molybdic ocher (Mo03), are the molybdenum minerals most abundantly found in deposits of oxidized lead ores. Wulfenite contains 39.3 per cent molybdenum trioxide and 60.7 per cent lead oxide; molybdite contains 66.7 per cent molybdenum and 33.3 per cent oxygen. Plumbojarosite, argentojarosite, cerussite, and occasionally anglesite are commonly associated with wulfenite ores, and the oxidized iron content is usually fairly high.The recent discovery and development of a body of wulfenite ore in the Star district near Milford led to a cursory microscopic examination of samples of the ore, followed by a few preliminary tests which had for their object the separation and recovery of the lead and molybdenum in separate products.The microscopic examination showed that the samples used in the work were composed of wulfenite, plumbojarosite, and a small quantity of cerussite, and indicated that the iron content was quite high. The ore was porous and yellowish-brown; crystals of wulfenite appeared to be quite uniformly distributed through it, and this mineral and plumbojarosite (Pb0.3Fe203.4S03.6H20) apparently accounted for the major part of the lead content, although lead"

Most engineering firms engaged in the design and manufacture of milling components and systems have established, through the years, a relatively well defined system design procedure. The process design engineer has at his disposal several alternative approaches to the successful completion of this task. Unfortunately, while these alternatives, at first glance, appear to be rather straight Forward, any attempt to implement them into a fully integrated commuter design program becomes increasingly more complex when one addresses himself to the problem in total. This paper summarizes Kennedy Van Saun's approach to the solution of this problem through a planned system design. Following the problem definition and discussion, a detailed analysis and system design synthesis is presented; the major aim here being to provide a system design which may be programmed and run on a relatively inexpensive computer installation such as the IBM 1130 system currently in use at Kennedy Van Saun. A summary section is also included, which Provides a general outline guide to the program systems design of equipment which, while quite different from milling system functionally, nevertheless lends itself to the approach used in this paper.

The following letter was received from Prof. Kemp in reply to a telegram expressing the greetings of the members attending the Annual Meeting in New York. "Melbourne Beach, Fla. Feb. 17, 1916. Dear Mr. Stoughton: The welcome telgram from the members of the Institute, which you kindly trans-mitted to me, came safely yesterday and I catch the next available mail with a heart-felt acknowledgment. I cannot express to you how greatly the remembrance cheers and braces me during the days of patient waiting for the feeling of over-strain to fully pass, and for the time when I can again be back among the friends in the Institute who are very clear to me. While I cannot reach all the members who joined in the telegram I will ask you to say to such as are available that I am profoundly sensible of the thoughtfulness which prompted the message. I write from a little bungalow on the ocean. side of the half mile or more of sand dunes, thickly grown with palmetto, which separate the ocean from the Indian River. Two miles or more of Indian River still intervene between the little colony of Melbourne Beach and Melbourne on the mainland and on the Florida East Coast R. R. where the telegraph station is. ABSTRACT: Despite many years of practical applications in mineral processing plants, the potential of column flotation has still not been fully exploited. The challenge in measuring some key variables is certainly an important contributing factor to this situation. Reliable online measurement of variables, such as the froth depth, bias, gas hold-up, frother concentration, bubble surface area flux, and bubble size distribution, provides opportunities for the application of various advanced control strategies and real-time optimization based on an economic criterion. For several years, Université Laval’sLaboratoire d’observation et d’optimisation des procédés researchers have been working on these opportunities. This paper describes the most recent advances and current research trends.

Without having asked for it, the writer has apparently been drawn into the discussion regarding relative hoisting capacities which was started by Woodward Iron, egged on by Joe Haller of Cleveland-Cliffs [Mining Engineering, August p. 642] and Axel Kjelgaard [November p. 919], who took exception to Mr. Haller's remarks of tonnage hoisted and avers that they do better in Sweden. It does not appear to the writer that Mr. Haller was inclined to refer to the tonnage hoisted at Cleveland-Cliffs in a manner to imply that they claimed any hoisting record, but rather as a statement that they had hoisted a certain amount of ore during the year 1950. Mr. Haller has been in the mining game long enough to appreciate what Mr. Kjelgaard did not apparently take into consideration, that length of haul, shifts hoisted, nature of ore, method of loading and the many other factors which influence the hoisting cycle make a comparison of tonnages hoisted of two given mines almost an impossibility. Mr. Cheyette sent you .a copy of his letter to Bob Manegold relative to the capacities of the Orient #2 mine. There are several mines around the Country which constantly set up records about which little or nothing at all is ever heard. We cite the Snow Hill Coal Co. mine at Terre Haute, Ind., which has an automatic Nordberg hoist and which hoists 12 tons per trip or 700 tons per hr from 700 ft. This is a counter-weighted installation and a complete cycle is made every 62 seconds or 58 trips per hr. Another mine, The Potash Company of America mine at Carlsbad, N. Mex., has a Nordberg automatic hoist, hoisting eight tons per trip from 1150 ft on a one minute cycle. The materials hoisted in these two mines are ideal for automatic hoisting-they are free flowing so that no hang up is anticipated and hoisting is continuous. Multiplying out the above figures you will find that it is possible to hoist 11,000 tons in two shifts at Snow Hill or over 3 million tons in 300 days per year and over 2 million tons at Potash. Other mines have records which can be pointed to with pride. When a record for one year is established, it doesn't stand too long as here in America the ambition of all the men connected with the operation forces them on to larger tonnages. T. C. "The idea for this talk came to me last year when I was attending the Canadian Gold Metallurgists Meeting. I talked about it to a friend of mine who is an authority on mineral dressing, particularly the theoretical end of the business. He remarked that this was an excellent technical note, why don't you write it up. This is what I have for presentation this morning. I hope in presenting this type of idea in this way it is in keeping with the tradition of the Canadian Gold Metallurgists which was to function on a not too sophisticated level and where operators could get together and trade ideas in an informal way.My basic thesis is that it should be possible to evaluate screen analyses by the application of the standard statistical probability theory. In any statistical analysis the sample is the first consideration. If we look at existing methods of size evaluation we find it is usually based on the fact that a given particle will pass one square aperature and not another. One system of standardizing how these aperatures will be set up is based on Rittenger' s work with the ratio of hole sizes proportional to the square root of 2. Keeping in mind the limitation we have accepted this as our method of 11 sizing"" in attempting to apply standard statistical methods to screen analysis."

ThE eutectoid decomposition of 6 phase in the Cu-Sn system (32.53 wt pct Sn) has been studied by several investigators.1-6 On the basis of X-ray work, Iball and 0wen1 reported complete decomposition of 6 in powder specimens after 7 days at 300°C. Wang and Hansen followed the micro-structural changes during heat treatment of lump specimens and estimated 5 pct decomposition after 63 days at 300°C. Wang and Hansen suggested that the discrepancy between the decomposition rates of powder and lump specimens might be due to the excess surface free energy of powders. The present work involved 6 decomposition in copper-tin alloy powders containing 32.6 wt pct Sn. Alloy lump specimens exhibited entirely 6 phase after fairly slow cooling (air cooling) from above 350°C and were so brittle that they could be easily crushed to-200 mesh in a percussion mortar. X-ray diffraction study of the as-crushed powders (-200 mesh) revealed 100 pct 6 phase with very slight line broadening effects due to strain introduced by crushing. "Seepage is a major cause of earth-rockfill dam failure. Numerical simulation of infiltration process, distribution of drift, flow velocity and direction after the impoundment can guide seepage control and evaluate its effects. A double field coupling model is established based on soil consolidation theory and the interaction between the seepage field and the temperature field. The simulation is implemented under the situation of core wall setted, core wall not setted, and core wall setted with concentrated leakage. The results indicated that the saturation line height was significantly reduced due to impervious core wall, and the temperature distribution is uniform above the saturation line. If concentrated leakage occurs, temperature distribution of dam was significantly changed, which is consistent with theoretical inference.INTRODUCTIONEngineering seepage field distribution must be calculated in seepage control design, optimization, and correction of new engineering construction of earth dams, as well as in seepage monitoring and evaluation of existing earth-rockfill dams. The aim of calculation is to identify the important parameters in seepage field, such as the coefficient of permeability, seepage flow, pressure, head, and allowable seepage slope, for effectively implementing seepage control design, correction, safety assessment, and anti-seepage reinforcement. These seepage parameters usually can be obtained by in-situ test and back-analysis based on reliable monitoring data.In order to obtain reliable monitoring data and reflect the earth-rockfill dam seepage state and change process, appropriate monitoring technology and monitoring method is necessary. The traditional seepage monitoring method is through site inspection and sensors (e.g., osmometer, piezometric tube and measuring weir) that buried in the structure and its foundation. The Coal Creek Preparation Plant is the coal cleaning facility of Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company. Located three miles west of Redstone, Colorado, and at an elevation of 8,040 feet the preparation plant cleans coal produced at the company's Dutch Creek Mine and L. S. Wood Mine. (See Fig.1.) Current production is at the rate of 2500 tons per day clean coal. Plant capacity is rated 350 TPH raw coal. Reject rates vary with mining conditions from 8% to 25%. Factors which influenced the design of the coal cleaning facility were the characteristics of the coal, the location in a tourist oriented resort area, and the extreme winters of the area. Lack of areas suitable for settling ponds and the necessity of keeping effluent waters out of the fishing streams dictated a closed circuit plant. Severe winter conditions, which last six to seven months out of the year and temperatures which have dropped to 40° F. below zero on occasions demanded that the plant be totally insulated and enclosed indoors.

The laser sorting technique for replacing the handpicking of the non-ferrous metal scrap from auto shredders was first introduced 1990, The process is based on the use of atomic emission spectroscopy induced by lasers to identify the scrap particles and sort them with adequate systems into main fractions of Al-, Zn-and Cu-alloys, stainless steel and lead, In the meantime the handling technique for the scrap, i.e. the singling and sorting technique as well as the analytical detector were further developed for more efficiency and higher reliability, i,e. less maintenance, minor sorting errors etc. These developments were mainly based, on and initiated by operational experiences from the startup phase of a first production plant. Part of the on going research work was the development of an ,aluminium detector which makes it the first time possible to sort mixed aluminium scrap automatically into specific alloy fractions.

DURING the last 30 years the inductive electromagnetic method has been used chiefly in the search for massive sulphide mineralization. This application has met with varying degrees of success and in recent years has resulted in discovery of several large orebodies. Little has been written concerning its use in exploration for soft iron ores, but one of the present authors has reported on experiments with massive magnetic deposits.' To augment the exploration tools available to geologists in delineating iron orebodies, Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. and McPhar Geophysics Ltd. undertook in 1953 to apply the inductive electromagnetic method to Cleveland-Cliffs properties in the Lake Superior region. As a result of this project, equipment has been developed that enables simultaneous transmission of two audio frequency waves, and the field technique and interpretative procedure involved have furthered exploration in the district significantly. Thus far, inductive electromagnetic application in the Lake Superior region has been only a development tool, that is, it is used to locate obscured contacts and faults as a part of property expansion and development. However, its application to primary reconnaissance of unexplored areas may be feasible in the future. The method has assisted in placing drillholes efficiently, and the elimination of excess drilling foot-ages and/or actual elimination of unnecessary holes has amply justified the expense of the geophysical survey. Cost of the field work involved is comparable on a per station basis to the cost of a magnetometer or superdip survey. Since observations require no reduction, i.e., are directly interpretable, overall expenditure is low, and the scope and detail of the survey can be adjusted in the field as geological- geophysical correlation becomes evident. To a great extent, this eliminates the second-guessing so commonly arising after office calculations are completed on data obtained with other types of geophysical surveys. This unique feature of field interpretation and its associated intimate feel of the project area, is, perhaps, one of the most valuable aspects of the inductive electromagnetic method as applied to iron ore exploration. Basis of Method Fundamentally, the method involves transmission of an alternating electromagnetic wave, of a chosen audio frequency, which permeates the ground materials in the vicinity of a transmitting, or primary, coil, see Fig. 1. This wave, or field, induces an electric current in any conductor on which it is incident. The flow of an alternating current in a conductor sets up its own, or secondary, radiating electromagnetic field. These two fields form a resultant whose configuration depends on the following characteristics of the subsurface conductors: 1) size, 2) shape, 3) electrical conductivity, 4) magnetic permeability, and 5) frequency of the transmitted wave. To a lesser extent the resultant is also dependent on material adjacent to the conductor, topography, and surface conductivity. For illustrative purposes, the primary, secondary, and resultant fields may be represented by vectors. In operation, the direction of the resultant vector is measured by a small receiving coil tuned to the frequency of the transmitted wave. Generally speaking, the method can be compared to the transmission and reception of the familiar radio broadcast, with special variations permitting measurement of the effect on reception of intervening materials. Field Technique Mechanics of field operation are simple. The mast is set up in a vertical position and is then guyed in place. The transmitting loop then is raised by means of a sheave at the top of the mast and the coil connected to the motor-generator. A special plane table is clamped into position on the mast and the loop is plumbed. The plane table is oriented according to a grid system established over the project area. In most copper refineries, addition agents are added at predetermined rates with no further monitoring of their activity or concentration in the electrolyte. Increasingly stringent cathode quality requirements, and a desire for better process control in tankhouse operations, have recently directed a number of refineries to search for a better addition agent control strategy. Extensive development work has been carried out at the Noranda Technology Centre for the monitor in of glue and thiourea in copper refinery electrolyte using cyclic voltammetry (cv~. Data from both synthetrc and commercial electrolytes are presented, showing the ability of CV to produce reliable and easily identifiable fingerprints of addition agent concentrations in copper refinery electrolyte.

"The Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) is a federal Crown corporation which operates two coal mines (Phalen and Prince Collieries), a coal preparation plant, a railway, a central workshop and a deep water shipping facility.The Sydney coal field consists of 11 major seams, which range from 0.8 m to over 3.7 m in thickness. Of the 2.4 billion tonnes of known coal resources in the field, approximately 550 million tonnes can be mined with present mining technology. These parameters define reserves which extend more than 8 km beneath the ocean to a depth of 1200 m. With today’s design and present high production faces, the colliery life is projected at approximately 20 years."

This requirement has stimulated a search for ways and means of applying modern management techniques to the design and construction of mineral processing plants.This search by consulting firms has resulted in the evolution of the concept of project management and the development of planning and con trolling techniques with the result that Owners can seek and obtain better assurance that their project objectives will be fulfilled.This paper will attempt to outline how a mineral processing plant can be brought into production through the implementation of project management techniques.Definition And Objectives Of Project ManagementThe design and construction of mineral processing plants is subject to the restraints of three inter-related parameters -Quality, Cost and Time each of which influences and is influenced by the other two.Project management is a technique where the Owner delegates complete responsibility to a single organization for all phases of a project (design, procurement, construction and commissioning) for the above parameters but retains freedom for major decision making. Normally, the consultant under-takes full responsibility for all phases, but partial project management services can be provided when the Owner so desires.The objective of project management is first to devise and define and then to implement a program in which the relationship between the three parameters of Quality, Cost and Time is optimized, i.e., the desired functional and other requirements are attained (but not exceeded) at the lowest practicable overall cost in the shortest practicable time. The measure of success of a project lies in the degree to which this objective is achieved."

The aim of the research was to investigate the feasibility of using an impedance cell and ratio-transformer bridge to measure solids content in coal slurry pipelines. It appeared that this technique could be developed to measure variations in conductance which correlate with solids content. Successful implementation of the measurement technique would have a variety of applications in existing coal wash plants and the potential for automatic process control. A small pilot plant was designed for a feasibility study. This was a closed loop system in which the coal was uniformly dispersed in a tank with a variable speed agitator and then circulated through an external pipe returning to the top of the tank. The impedance cell was located near the end of the external pipe. Slurry concentrations were varied from clean tap water to 50 per cent solids by weight with the addition of weighed quantities of dry coal dust. Ratio-transformer bridge measurements showed that variations in individual observations were equivalent to measurement errors of about two per cent. These probably reflect variations in concentration of the mixture in the pipe. Data for increments in concentration of one per cent indicate that this is about the limit of resolution of the current system. The paper discusses the principles of operation of the impedance cell and measurement system. Results from the pilot study and proposed improvements in the impedance cell design are examined.

Antes de determinar la construcción de una represa de relaves, es necesario evaluar la locación y el procedimiento a utilizar para el depósito de los mismos. En este sentido, el objetivo del trabajo describe la rehabilitación de dos represas en la zonas mineras del país, donde una ejemplifica el aspecto del lugar en que fue situada, mientras que la otra, describe el procedimiento de su construcción. La primera de las represas de relaves se sitúa en el lecho de una quebrada, donde previamente se excavó hasta encontrar una roca firme, construyéndose un acueducto de concreto que sirve para decantar las aguas provenientes de relaves y lluvias. El depósito de relaves se realizó por una tubería elevada sobre la represa, separando las arenas segregadas debajo de los pitones para formar los bancos de la represas con ese material. A diferencia de otras represas convencionales, la filtración del agua es necesaria para lograr una distribución en cantidades que no afecten la estabilidad de la empresa. Así, esta primera represa cuenta con un reservorio adecuado y un acueducto de piedra que filtra la humedad, aunque no logró filtrar completamente el agua de la represa, desequilibrando el contenido de la arena con el agua. Para subsanar dicha situación, se tuvo que perforar con brocas diamantinas la roca debajo de la represa, concluyéndose que la estabilidad de la represa es un elemento necesario para la construcción de la locación. De otro lado, la segunda represa está situada sobre una quebrada angosta, donde el terreno en el que se depositan los relaves es detrítico sobre la roca permeable. Para el procedimiento de su construcción se excavó una zanja sobre el piso de la quebrada y se colocó una tubería de doce pulgadas para tomar el agua que posteriormente se decantaría por las chimeneas de concreto. En la rinconada de la quebrada se excavó una hoya con suficiente pendiente, a fin de contener huaycos y asi evitar que la sedimentación obstruya el canal. Luego se realizó una modificación a través de la deposición de arena de los ciclones en la construcción de bancos de reservas, adoptándose la estructura de una represa sobre otra, de forma que la arena nunca descansa sobre la lama, la filtración se hace más lenta a través de ambas represas y el riesgo de roturas del banco es menor, obteniendo un mayor espacio de área para la decantación y el almacenamiento de aguas en la represa. Así, los ciclones se convierten en un elemento de ayuda para la represa auxiliar, rehabilitando a la represa anterior y permitiendo que esté activa nuevamente.
