The Enterprise Mine Project (EMP) is being developed by Mount IsaMines Limited as the future source of copper ore at the Mt Isa miningand processing complex. Environmental engineering is one of the majortechnical challenges facing the project because of the depth of theorebodies, high virgin rock temperatures and hot ambient surfacetemperatures in summer. This paper discusses the engineering principles adopted by EMP to manage the risks associated with working in these adverse thermal conditions.

The requirements of today's and tomorrow's markets led to a new generation of facilities which handles large tonnages annually, loading them into larger vessels, at higher rates, efficiently and reliably, with minimum labor input, and significantly greater attention to the environment. A great variety of products are handled, including various grades of metallurgical and steaming coal, coke, iron ore in its many forms, shapes and moisture content, phosphates and fertilizer products, bauxite and alumina ores, limestone, sugar and grains, cement and many other products. When we examine the annual tonnages involved in these movements the economic value of handling these products on a bulk basis can be readily seen. Although nearly all these products have been handled by continuous bulk conveyors for many years, recent governmental response to environmental concerns require a re-evaluation of previous procedures. Most air pollution and emission control regulations and ordinances have recognized several specific sources of pollution. Detailed regulations and requirements have been developed concerning smoke emissions, emissions of visible air contaminants and particulate matter from power plants, heating plants, refuse burning equipment, coke ovens, steel furnaces, kilns, and other industrial installations. Although fugitive dust is also an environmental pollutant it is governed by regulations that are more general and therefore, more difficult to apply. A general definition of a "fugitive particle" is any matter which escapes or becomes airborne from an operation or which is emitted into the atmosphere without passing or being conducted through a flue, pipe, stack or other structure designed for the purpose of emitting air pollutants into the atmosphere. This paper deals with the aspects of fugitive dust emissions as they apply to shiploading. Fugitive dust emissions control is important not only because of environmental regulations but also to prevent the loss of valuable product, reduce housekeeping, and reduce breakdown and maintenance problems to land and vessel equipment. The environmental controls for a belt conveyor system are those which will restrict the emission of fugitive dust particles and can be considered as follows:

In North Vietnam, large ductile shear zones are observed along the Red river fault and the Dienbien fault. Left-lateral sense of the Red river shear zone is related to the direction of shortening E-W. NE dipping foliation planes is subvertical. Stretching lineation is subhorizontal ( 25¦). Left-lateral slip observed in the Oligocene Yansun granites demonstrates the major tectonic phase in Neogene, The stress field established from microfaults observed in triassic limestones, Oligocene granites and Neogene Conglomerates. Measurements of striations on fault mirors are used for calculating the stress tensor and for separating tectonic phases. Two tectonic phases in tertiary are separated : first tectonic phase related to the compressive direction E-W corresponds to the major tectonic phase represented by NW left-lateral shear zone. Second phase having the compressive direction N-S associated with the right-lateral movement of the Red-river fault zone opening of the Eastern sea and the Red-river and the Red-river delta is associated with the left-lateral movement along the Red-river.

PrioR to 1902, the tramming of ore from the stopes to the shafts, in the Butte mines, was done by man or animal power, but the demand for greater tonnage and the need for more improved methods of tramming the ore resulted in the installation of the compressed-air locomotive in a few mines. Some of the objections to animal haulage were thus eliminated, but this locomotive was not generally adopted, because of a number of limiting features. It was superseded by the electric trolley locomotive. The early types of trolley locomotives were not satisfactory from the operators' viewpoint, but they had many economic advantages and after a number of years, in which improvements were constantly made in the structural details, they became dependable, so that the use of animals for main haulage in the mines has now been practically abandoned. There are now operating in the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., 185 trolley-type locomotives, each of which has replaced five animals. It cost approximately $50 per month to keep an animal, hence the economies that resulted fully justified the expenditure of electrifying the haulage systems. The haulage conditions in this company's mines possess many advantageous features that arc not always found in underground mine workings. The drifts and crosscuts are large, approximately 5 ft. (1.5 m.) wide by 71/2 ft. (2.3 m.) high, and have curves of no less than 18 ft. (5.5 m.) radius; and the roadbeds of the drifts and crosscuts have a uniform grade of 0.5 per cent. toward the shaft, or in favor of the loaded trips. In all of the mines, except two, the track gage is 18 in. (45.7 cm.): and all tracks in the main haulageways are laid with 25-lb. (11.3 kg.) rails. The stations at the shaft are large, well-lighted, clean, and cool. The average temperature of the stations, however, is about 75" F. (24" C.), while the average temperature in some of the drifts and crosscuts is 92" I?. (33.5" C.). As the orebodies lie at varying distances from the hoisting shafts,

The mechanical properties and the phase-temperature relationships of magnesium-lithium-aluminum, magnesium-lithium-zinc, and magnesium-lithium-aluminum-zinc alloys are presented. It is shown that the strengths of some of these alloys can be tripled by heat treating and aging but that the high strength is accompanied by brittleness and lack of stability. MAGNESIUM-LITHIUM alloys are interesting because the hexagonal structure of magnesium can be changed into the more ductile and workable body-centered cubic structure by the addition of only 10 pct lithium.1 After Loonam2 determined that the ductility of the magnesium-lithium alloys is destroyed by even trace quantities of sodium, it was possible to prepare ductile alioys and study their mechanical properties. Jackson3 and coworkers have ably described their results with both the binary and polynary magnesium-lithium alloys. The present paper is a report of the mechanical properties of wrought magnesium-lithium-aluminurn, magnesium-lithium-zinc, and magnesium-lithium-aluminum-zinc alloys. Experimental Procedure The alloys were made by melting 7 lb of magnesium in a steel crucible under a molten flux of 75 pct LiCl + 25 pct LiF3 previously dried at 1600°F. The metal was heated to 1300°F for alloying aluminum and zinc and then cooled to 1250°F for adding lithium (sodium content: 0.01 to 0.04 pct). After the lithium had been alloyed, dry LiF powder was sprinkled on the melt to thicken the excess flux. After a 15 min holding period, the flux was skimmed off. Paraffin vapors were used to protect the metal as it was poured into 3 in. diam by 11 in. long magnesium molds. Billets were extruded into 3/8-in. diam rod and 1/16 x 3/4-in. strip; sheet was prepared from 1/8x 7/8-in. extruded strip, first by hot rolling and then by cold rolling 2 pct per pass. Hot rollability, or the temperature range through which the alloys could be rolled, was determined by rolling the strip two passes at 30 pct reduction per pass. Cold rollability, or the percentage of cold reduction to cause detrimental cracking, was determined on 0.064-in. hot-rolled sheet. Standard ASTM procedures were followed to obtain the mechanical properties, using 0.2 pct offset for the yield strengths. The level of properties produced with commercial magnesium alloys using the procedure described is given in a previous publication." Results Magnesium - Lithium - Aluminum System: The good workability of magnesium-lithium alloys is illustrated by the data in table I, which shows approximately how the extrusion pressure decreases as the amount of cubic phase increases. The desulphurization process has been proposed over the last few years for acid mine drainage control at certain mines, which generate low to medium grade sulphidic tailings (-3 to +25 wt% S). The environmental sulphur recovery, which means the sulphur to be floated to produce a non-acid generating final tailings, depends mainly on the intrinsic neutralizing potential of the tailings. However, in some cases the sulphur cleaning is complicated by other parameters which affect the flotation probability of the sulphide particles. In this study, a number of tests were conducted with a Hallimond tube and Denver Cell on both pure mineral and mine tailings. To develop a better understanding of the mechanisms of non-selective sulphide flotation, three types of approach were investigated in this work: (i) pure pyrite at progressive milling degrees, (ii) artificial mix of pyrite and quartz at different calibrated granulometry and (iii) same composition tailings with 26 % wt sulphur at progressive milling degrees. The effect of the granulometry on the sulphide flotation was demonstrated both. The results allow us to define a granulometry model, which can then be considered in the whole desulphurization modeling.

A series of X ray experiments conducted by G. I. Taylor' in 1927 and later substantiated in 1939 by J. A. Collins2 both on axially strained aluminum single crystals, revealed evidence that during single slip crystallite rotation occurs in such a manner that " all parts of the material rotated about the transverse direction in the plane of slip."l The actual method of preparing the specimens for X ray examination is not discussed in detail by Taylor except to say that "this specimen was cut parallel to the plane of slip, as calculated from measurements of marks in the surface of the specimen. It was ground and etched till the effect of the new cuts had disappeared. This was verified by applying the same treatment to an un-distorted specimen. The X ray reflectionsl in this case were perfect ones."' Collins, on the other hand, cut his crystals in a mechanical shaper. These surfaces were polished on No. 1, No. 1/0, No. 2/0 and No. 3/0 papers and on a broadcloth lap using No. 600 alundum as a polishing medium. "Finally, the surface was deeply etched in Tucker's reagent. An unde-formed crystal was prepared in the manner described and X rayed to determine whether or not the machining and polishing operations had produced any strain or distortion in the crystal. The Laue spots all seem to be sharp, free from tails and streaks indicating no detectable strains had been introduced in the crystals." Taylor's X ray technique involved the use of "homogeneous X rays from an iron anti-cathode"; whereas Collins used Ka radiation of copper at 31kv and 20 milliamperes. Glancing angle X ray photograms were taken (1) with the axis of rotation of the spectrometer table in the plane of slip and at right angles to the slip direction, and (2) with the axis of the spectrometer table lying along the slip direction. However, eight minute exposures were used in each case and the angle setting of the spectrometer table was increased by one degree for each exposure. "Archean lode gold deposits of both vein and chemical sedimentary types typically have major enrichments of certain rare elements, including Au, Ag, As, Sb, B, W, Se, Te and Bi, coupled with low or negative enrichments of the more abundant and mobile base metals, Cu, Pb and Zn. On the other hand, in massive base metal sulphide deposits Au, Ag, Cu, Zn and in some instances Pb are all enriched by a factor of 200 to 2000 t:'Jf'1pared to background and there is no large separation of gold relative to the base metals.The fluids from which gold was precipitated in veins were at temperatures of 320 to 480°C, at lithostatic pressure, had significant C02, and Na """" K; whereas the fluids which generated base metal deposits were at 250-300°C, at hydrostatic pressure, had C02 < < H20 and Na > > K.Many lode gold deposits are characterized by K, C02 and Si additions to their enveloping rocks, whereas base metal deposits typically have a fixation of Fe, Mg, Si and S in footwall rocks. Lode gold deposits may also have a relatively large halo of low-temperature oxidative, sadie spilitization in enclosing volcanic rocks, where seawater has later streamed into cooling stocks or flows that have initially acted to focus gold mineralizing fluids along thermal contraction fractures. The submarine environment is one hydrologically appropriate for the mixing of two initially independent hydrothermal systems, and the blending of their separate characteristics. Hence, lode gold and base metal massive sulphide deposits appear to be products of two distinctly different crustal and hydrological regimes. The former involves a high-temperature, high-pressure discharge of fluids which probably were generated during dehydration accompanying burial and progressive accumulation of volcanic-sedimentary sequences, with an additional influence of marine water in the near-sea-floor environment. The latter represents thermally driven convection of ocean water at lower temperatures and under hydrostatic conditions.Auriferous fluid systems with only minor base metal content could plausibly be generated during dehydration accompanying burial and metamorphism, when the water-to-rock ratio is low and halogen availability is limited by crustal abundance (- 60 ppm Cl). These two factors may constrain the uptake of the abundant base metals into fluids, but the solubility of rare elements is not constrained by limited fluid; and preferential uptake of Au along with other rare elements may be promoted if such elements compete more successfully for the limited halogens than the base metals, and/or have an alternative complexing agent such as CO or C()j-."

Abstract Spectrographic methods for the analysis of minor constituents such as platinum-group metals, gold, silver, and silica in palladium and platinum refinery sponge are described. These involve the conversion of the sponge metals to the black form by reduction with high purity aluminum filings in either acid or alkaline media. Standards of known composition are prepared in the same manner from either refinery or spectrographically standardized sponge metals. Samples of the black metals are mounted in pellet form and a multisource spark discharge used for excitation. The range of concentrations of impurities studied are those common to refinery samples. Excellent reproducibility of intensity ratios using major constituents as internal standards, is demonstrated and two methods have noted by which the accuracy of the procedures are shown to be of the order of 3 per cent, on the basis of synthetic preparations. Introduction During the past two years an investigation has been carried out in the Spectrographic Laboratory, Queen&apos;s University, to determine the suitability of modern spectrographic techniques for the precise analysis of the platinum-group metals palladium, platinum, rhodium, iridium, and ruthenium in the form of refinery sponge analyzing about 99 per cent of the major constituent.

BARITE, naturally occurring barium sulphate, is the chief barium mineral that is produced commercially. Barite is also called "barytes," "heavy spar," sometimes "baryta" and, locally in Missouri, "tiff." Pure barite is white, opaque to transparent. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, frequently with twinning. Impurities cause a wide variation in color, commonly buff, gray and white with irregular reddish iron stains. Less frequently found are shades of yellow, green, blue, brown, and black. The rock is brittle and breaks with an uneven fracture, although specimens from some of the residual deposits, particularly in Missouri, appear to have a cleavage due to the separation of the different layers of deposition. The hardness varies from 2.5 to 3.5 on Mohs&apos; scale and different localities are said to produce either "hard" or "soft" barite. This generally refers to the ease of grinding of the product. The specific gravity of pure barite is 4.5 and this will vary downward, depending on the impurities present. The mineral has a white streak and a pearly to vitreous or sometimes stony luster. Pure barite contains 65.7 pct BaO and 34.3 pct SO3. Witherite, native barium carbonate, is not mined in the United States at the present time although a number of occurrences have been reported. A small quantity of witherite has been removed from a mine at El Portal, California, but the area high in witherite was small and soon depleted. The bulk of the deposit is predominantly barite. Great Britain is the world source of witherite and small quantities are imported into the United States. DISTRIBUTION OF DEPOSITS Occurrence of barite is widespread; it has been reported on all the continents and in all the major countries of the world. The influence of precipitation from solid solution on the subsequent deformation resistance of alloys is well known. However, the influence of precipitation or aging that occurs simultaneously with deformation may be entirely different and of considerable importance. It is thought1 that the presence or absence of a yield point jog in impure iron at room temperature and the presence or absence of discontinuous flow at higher temperatures may be directly related to aging phenomena, particularly since the yield point jog is absent when the carbon and nitrogen are sufficiently removed.2 As a preliminary attack on the problem of simultaneous aging and deformation, three kinds of tests—constant strain rate tensile tests, constant load creep tests, and variable strain rate tensile tests—were carried out on an age hardenahle aluminum alloy. Constant Strain Rate Tensile Tests Stress-strain curves at a strain rale of about 0.001 min-1 were obtained for specimens of 61S that had been quenched into liquid nitrogen after a one-hour solution treatment at 521°C, then aged at room temperature 10 min., 20 min., 4 hr, and 26.5 hr before testing. Strain-time curves were obtained on the same chart with the stress-strain curve by means of an auxiliary pen, driven parallel to the axis of the chart drum at constant speed by a synchronous motor and gear chain. The angle of rotation of the chart drum was proportional to strain. The strain rates reported are the measured slopes of the strain time curves. Constant strain rate was approximated (within a factor of 2) by manual adjustment of the oil inlet valve of the hydraulic testing machine in such a way that the course of the recorder pen was parallel to pre-drawn strain-time lines of the desired slope. The early and reliable detection of the self-heating of combustible substances in mines is of considerable importance to the mining community. This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of a variety of studies of incipient combustion and its detection. Heated samples of coal, wood, and various polymers were used to evaluate the relative sensitivities of several types of detectors. The laboratory results indicate that submicrometer particulate detection is the most universal and sensitive method. Carbon monoxide detection was as sensitive as submicrometer particulate detection for pyrolyzing coal but was relatively insensitive to pyrolyzing wood or plastics. The conventional type of ionization smoke detector was the least sensitive for coal and of intermediate sensitivity for wood and plastics. Self-heating experiments with Pittsburgh seam coal piles of varying particle sizes gave ignition temperatures of 170° C for 4-to 7-µm dust, which increased monotonically with particle size. The measured heating rates were compared with data from an adiabatic calorimeter to obtain preexponential rate constants. The preexponential rate constants varied linearly with the surface area per unit mass of sample as would be expected for heterogeneous surface oxidation. The propagation behavior of ignition waves and the overall self-heating appears to depend critically on the magnitude of the convective flows induced, which counteract the depletion of oxygen in the void spaces of the pile. Classical theories of thermal ignition require substantial modification to be applied reliably to such cases.

The electrochemical reactions involved in a zinc sulfide flotation concentrate leaching with sulfuric acid in presence and absence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, as well as with ferric chloride - hydrochloric acid containing media, have been investigated. The cyclic voltammetric measurements revealed that many intermediate electrochemical reactions are involved in the zinc sulfide leaching. Using chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric techniques, it was found that the leaching process is controlled by solid - state diffusion. The activation energy of solid - state diffusion process was determined by the Price&apos;s approach to be 21.3 kJ. The leaching mechanism is discussed in terms of solid - state properties (energy bondings) of the high energy gap solid zinc sulfide semiconductor and energy density states of redox systems of acidic leach media. A generalized model for the mechanism of zinc sulfide oxidation is present.

The mining industry is generally regarded as a high risk industry, mainly because of the difficulties in estimating the tonnage and grade of mineral resources, the fluctuations in metal prices, mining problems and other problems which occur with mining in offshore and remote locations, such as appropriation or disruption to supply. As a consequence, finance providers require a high reward from mining projects. In the past two decades, the development of "mega" projects has led to the packaging of the finance becoming more sophisticated. Some would see this move as a measure of the evolution of banking rather than an intrinsic facet of mining finance itself. Project financial managers now require a thorough knowledge of all the financial tools which are available and have to be aware of the funding options so that they can put together a finance package which minimises the cost of the financing with the risk spread adequately between the partners of the financing. The different sources and types of finance for mining projects are described herein along with the factors which determine their costs. To understand the ramifications of financing mining projects, it is essential to appreciate the fundamental difference between debt and equity, which illustrates the importance of gearing. Costs of finance are determined by the interaction of supply and demand forces. Bankers and other financiers have become more adept at isolating a wide selection of risk elements and have devised a formidable range of insurance mechanisms. There is still a lot of money looking for good project risks and if a good project is properly presented and structured, financing can be obtained in today&apos;s market.

"The Moose Mountain mine is located in a belt of Precambrian volcanic rocks situated 20 miles north of Sudbury, Ontario. It was the first iron mining operation in the Archean iron-formations of the Canadian Shield.The ore is believed to have been formed in an environment of active volcanism, being part of a pyroclastic and volcanic series where only the iron-formation and chert qualify as chemical sediments. The volcanic environment, subsequent regional tectonics and metamorphism produced orebodies which differ from the main sedimentary iron ranges of the world in such features as continuity, grade, structure and metallurgical characteristics. The orebodies occur as relatively small lenses which have been complexly folded, faulted and intruded by acidic and basic dykesAlthough the basic mining and beneficiation methods are simple, detailed geological control in exploration, planning and operation has been necessary to apply detailed selective techniques to the large-scale open-pit methods necessary in profitable iron mining.The milling and pelletizing processes are sensitive to minor variations in ore grade, grain size, fabric and mineralogy. Although detailed correlations of geological information and mill performance are still not entirely satisfactory, general working relationships have been determined with simple testing procedures. These are of in-creasing use in forecasting production and in ore-blending processes.The application of geology to mining and milling operations at Moose Mountain represents a departure from general practice in iron ore operations."

Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Consolidation Coal Company, through the mining research division of Continental Oil Company, is now undertaking the installation of a full-scale hydraulic transportation system to carry coarse coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The facility will include all elements of a fully integrated haulage system including face haulage for both longwall and continuous miner sections, multiple slurry feeds, hydraulic hoisting and 2.4 miles of overland slurry transport. This undertaking is a result of more than six years of extensive research and testing, some of which has been previously releasted to the literature. To provide a reference framework for system description, a brief history of recent coal mining technological developments will be discussed. Following World War II, mechanization resulted in mining machines that were bigger, faster, more powerful, and more reliable. These changes were essentially refinements in an established mining system. They made mining more efficient than before, but they did not change the system itself. By about the mid-1960&apos;s, it was apparent that further improvements in the extraction machinery would have a declining payoff, simply because .the worst bottlenecks were in other components of the mining system. A modern continuous miner cannot be run continuously because other operations underground cannot keep pace. In fact, most continuous miners today run at less than 20% of capacity. Consequently, in 1969 Consol and its parent company, Continental Oil, undertook a long-range R&D program to try to change the basic haulage system for the better. Most coal at present is removed from the mine by a hand-off system in which the coal is transferred from the continuous miner to a shuttle car, often with the aid of a separate loader; then from the shuttle car to a system of conveyor belts; and finally from the conveyors to rail cars. The system involves a large amount of moving equipment underground, many transfer points, and the everpresent chance of operational delays and safety hazards. By removing the haulage bottleneck, we believe we can speed up underground operations substantially; and perhaps more important, we could make it feasible to develop a whole new generation of mining equipment that is inherently safer. What we wanted was a truly flexible, continuous haulage system with inherent safety advantages. Ideally the system had to meet three major requirements: First, the coal had to enter the transport system at the face, and remain in that same system all the way to the preparation plant. Second, the system had to be flexible and extensible so that it could- follow the mining machine as it advances and retracts. And, third, the system must be inherently safer than current haulage technology.
