NATURE has provided us with many metals, but with few really good ones, and frequently the better metals are the rarer. It is to this circumstance that many physical metallurgists, inventors, and just plain experimenters owe their employment, for much of their work is directed, consciously or otherwise, toward the alleviation of some of the more serious shortcomings of the cheaper, less noble, and weaker metals; by alloying, age-hardening, passivating, cladding, plating, and other useful dodges, which sometimes permit the substitution of one of the less gifted metals for one of the really good ones. As a matter of fact, the varied needs of our complex civilization could be quite well met with only five metals, if they were sufficiently abundant, and one of the five would certainly be platinum, the most noble and versatile that nature provides. Many metals are difficult to handle and seem to take pleasure in defying their investigators to find good uses for them, and finally when a use is found it is frequently quite a specific one; in other words, a hole has to be found--or perhaps made-to fit the peg. It is for this reason that a large amount of research must be con- ducted before the more recalcitrant metals become really useful. In platinum, however, we have a metal that inherently possesses so many valuable attributes that it became useful as soon as methods for producing it in massive ductile form were devised, and once its complicated chemical behavior was understood it became principally an aid to research rather than the subject thereof. The Anglovaal Group has released details concerning its new processes for recovering platinum group metals, stating that the Group's system, which involves batch processing and precipitation methods for these metals (PGM's), leads to faster recovery times, increased recoveries, and higher purities than the conventional process. Insofar as South Africa's Merensky Reef is concerned, the Anglovaal method of recovering palladium first (as opposed to platinum in the conventional process) enables it to use a much simpler process in the subsequent recovery of platinum and other metals. Because the processes give cleaner separations, the volume of material to be recirculated -and therefore the total volume of material in the recovery circuits- is reduced substantially.

REAM is a unique and promising method of rock breaking using high energy, inert projectiles to impart mechanical energy to the rock. This paper describes a demonstration of the application of this new technology to two specific problems in open pit mining: secondary breakage and the scaling of loose material from pit walls. Under previous government contracts, Physics International Company developed the projectile impact method for a large variety of commercial and military rock excavation tasks. A 4 meter (13 foot) diameter by 16.8 meters (55 foot) long tunnel was driven at the Hope Valley Mine in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California in 1972 and 1973. An average of 1100 kg (1 ¼ tons) of a 172 MN/m2 (25,000-psi) granodiorite formation was broken by each of 590 shots used to drive the tunnel.l Based on these results it is estimated that REAM can drive over 60 meters (200 feet) of tunnel per day at about 88 percent of the cost of drilling and blasting. In addition, repeated axial impact by high energy projectiles was used to drill a 0.4 meter (16 inch) diameter horizontal hole in the same granodiorite formation. Each shot advanced the hole an average of 0.2 meter (8 inches).

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP) has been issuing surface mining permits since 1984 that authorize remining in areas that will affect preexisting pollutional discharges. These permits require the mine operator to employ best management practices to reduce pollution loading from abandoned mine discharges. A total of 110 completed mining operations with 233 discharges were evaluated to determine the impact to water quality. Overall, acid loading from these discharges was reduced by 7,200 kg (15,900 lbs) per day or 61%. Metals loadings were also reduced. For acidity, 49% of discharges improved or were eliminated, 52% showed no significant change, and fewer than 1% got worse. Loading reductions resulted from a combination of reduced concentrations and lower flows.

FABRICATION of semiconductor devices.requires the formation of electrical contacts, often involving the use of lead, tin, and lead-tin solders. In several recent instances when germanium had been bonded to nickel with lead, a new metallic phase appeared, unattached to either germanium or nickel, but rather suspended as a continuous foil wholly contained within the lead matrix. Since such metallic structures do not form in nickel-lead or lead-germanium systems under identical conditions, a brief study was made of the characteristics and possible formation mechanisms of this material. The Duval Corporation porphyry copper deposits at Copper Canyon and Copper Basin, though widely separated, form an economic unit requiring integrated exploitation. Contrasts in mineralization, host rocks, and mode of occurrence present unique mining and milling problems. Mixed oxide-sulfide ore is treated in extensive dump leaching facilities in both areas. Complex copper-gold-silver ore is treated in a 4,000 tpd mill at Copper Canyon. In both areas, hypogene metallization occurs within large aureoles of metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration related to quartz monzonite intrusions of mid-Tertiary age. Supergene processes further altered the rocks and enriched the hypogene protore. At Copper Canyon, hypogene copper and iron sulfides with gold and silver occur in fractures, as partial replacement of favorable beds, and as disseminations in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The lower part of the Pennsylvanian Battle Formation was a particularly favorable host. Metallization occurs to a lesser extent in quartz monzonite. Metal zoning is well developed. The deposits at Copper Basin consist principally of supergene copper minerals in arenites of the Cambrian Harmony Formation. Oxidation of hypogene copper and iron sulfides in tactite zones has formed at least two commercial deposits; intersections of fractures with favorable beds exerted important ore controls.

This address was delivered at the Annual Conference Presidential Dinner held in Sydney on 11 July 1988.The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy brings together, voluntarily, people with a professional interest in the disciplines and skills which are employed in the mineral industry, and in relation to that industry.We come together because we have a mutual interest in improving what is done by the mineral industry, in all its aspects. It is this sense of continuing improvement, of doing better, of doing as well as we can, as our knowledge and skills improve, that unites us in creating and fostering a professional association of likeminded people.We know from our professional training and experience that enormous progress has been made, at an ever-increasing rate, in the mineral industry, particularly this century. We know that the mineral industry has played a very major role in providing the means by which so many more people survive to live longer, healthier ,and more interesting lives, than ever before. Indeed, together with the oil and gas industry, which is an integral part of the mineral industry but has achieved its own commercial distinction, it is fair to claim that the mineral industry has played the major role in providing the means for the advancement of the human, quality of life.We do not need to make any great claims on human society in consequence of our statement of these contributions. The facts, for those who are aware of them, speak for themselves. Our more modest interest, as members of our professional association, is to look to the future, while conscious of our heritage as a guide to what more might be done, in that future.We certainly do not claim that this indisputable contribution made to human welfare by the mineral industry gives us some moral position of superiority from which to claim greater support or understanding from the wider community of people.On the other hand we know that as members of the mineral industry we have a responsibility to do what we can to help other people to be aware of, and to understand the significance of, those facts which will only speak for themselves if we take the trouble to make them known. And we have a number of organisations. The Institute itself, The Australian Mining Industry Council, the various State Chambers of Mines, the industrial relations body, The Australian Mines and Metals Association, and others, each of which in its own way endeavours to add strength to the individual efforts which we each should make.We may look at these facts about our mineral industry as simple dry statistics, even with their undoubtedly improving trends, or we can see them, and portray them to others, as expressing something which is much more. We can portray them as expressing the outcomes of our professional determination to strive to do better, whatever it i,s we find ourselves doing in this mineralindustry.We may seek to describe our efforts as being in pursuit of excellence, or by other such high-sounding phrases, but I prefer to describe those efforts as simply our strivings to make everything we do better next time-much as the dedicated golfer tries to do, but with, may I suggest, more evident success achieved in the mineral industry; which is one reason why I don't try to play golf.May I suggest to you that trying to do better, is very simply the true basis of professionalism? We are trained and practised to see the opportunity for improvement-not to be static in a world which we know is changing so rapidly in every aspect around us. We must be dynamic, which means optimistic, about improving the world in which we find ourselves.

In 1882, The Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., acquired producing copper mines at Metcalf and Morenci (locally called Longfellow). Metcalf is situated a distance of 7 miles, and Morenci a distance of 6 miles from the general office of the company at Clifton, Ariz. A reduction works with five blast furnaces was built in the center of the town of Clifton in 1884 and operated until January, 1914. Concentration of oxidized ores was begun in 1890-1891, in a mill built adjoining the smelter, and id October, 1893, a leaching process was started for treating tailings from the oxide mill. A sulphide concentrator with 300 tons capacity was built at Clifton and started treating chalcocite ores in July, 1896. This was the first mill to treat low-grade copper-siilphide ores successfully. Another concentration mill for sulphide ores was erected at Morenci in 1900. The sulphide mills are now being remodeled to treat ores by concentration and flotation, with a capacity of 4,000 tons at Morenci and 500 tons at Clifton. The leaching plant has not been running since September, 1914. Epithermal Ag-Au deposits form at low to moderate temperatures in near-surface environments. Historically, these deposits have been the source of high-grade ores. Increases in the market prices for gold and silver make lower-grade ores economically viable when available in large tonnages. Both the high-grade and bulk-tonnage ores are a consequence of the same processes, and general models of epithermal systems can be useful in the search for new precious-metal resources. A detailed study of deposits at Round Mountain, Nevada; Balei, Russia; Creede, Colorado; Guanajuato, Mexico; and Chanarcillo, Chile, indicates that the hydrodynamics of the fluid systems as determined by fracture geometries, the permeability, and composition of the host rocks are the key factors in the creation of both high-grade and bulk-tonnage epithermal deposits. End-member models that explain the range of observed deposit characteristics are: (1) the hot-springs deposition model; (2) the stacked-cell convection model (where mineral deposition occurs laterally along the interface of two partially separated fluid reservoirs); and, (3) the closed-cell convection model (where deposition occurs in vertical zones due to the relatively unimpeded vertical flow of hydrothermal fluids). Boiling and fluid mixing appear to be agents of precious-metal deposition with the self-sealing of the hydrothermal system being an important adjunct to boiling. Imaginative application of model concepts in exploration has led and can lead to the discovery of new high-grade and/or bulk-tonnage precious-metal deposits.

The application of single liquid cement for fracture grouting in base rock may have history more than 120 years. The disadvantage of it is difficult to increase the grouting efficiency, because the jelling time of it is very long and hard to control. The double liquid grout, such as chemical grouts and cement water glass grout was developed at the end of 1960.'s Although the jelling time of this kind of grout can be controlled, it mast adopt double liquid grouting technology, use complicated equipment and is not easy to control component's ratio of the grout. Another disadvantage for chemical grout is high price, and have pollution to environment. OCE series single liquid grout is the effective grout material developed recently by making large efforts in Ohina. Main feature of it is that the jelling time is easy to control, materials from cement and clay are very cheap and without pollution to environment, and the grout can be injected by single liquid technology. The effect of QCE series grout has been proven by its application in China. It can be believed that QCE grout has great economic efficiency and will give a push to develop grout material.

OWING to the nature of the die-casting process, freshly cast alloys are undoubtedly not at equilibrium from the standpoint of alloy phase relationships. After casting, therefore, they tend to undergo phase changes, with the ultimate effect of reaching a state of equilibrium at the aging temperature, beyond which no further change takes place. This phase alteration undoubtedly is one of the primary causes of the changes in dimensions and physical properties that zinc-alloy die castings undergo during aging. It is planned to report on this problem in a series of papers of which this is the first. The writers have made a study of commercial zinc die-casting alloys over a period of several years, utilizing the X-ray diffraction technic of determining the phase composition changes in the alloys. Up to the present, two principal phase changes have been observed which are capable of causing dimensional changes: (1) the segregation of secondary constituents from the zinc-base solid solution and (2) the beta aluminum-zinc decomposition. The latter is the subject of the present paper and studies on the former will be reported upon at a future time.

The optimisation of a mining operation requires precise ore grade control, metallurgical accounting, and laboratory sampling protocols, which are implemented by using accurate and flawless sampling systems. Good sampling practices, and sampling technologies in these fields have been historically poor and too many existing sampling systems available on the market are flawed in many ways. This is mainly the result of a poor understanding of the Sampling Theory, and the natural result of international standards on sampling that fail to present the Sampling Theory in a logical way, that still promote non-probabilistic sampling, and that fail to address the important details that make a correct sampling system. Many standards barely mention the Sampling Theory in appendices when it should be clearly the main body of a reliable standard on sampling. As a result, many standards show only little expertise in the Sampling Theory. Conventional statistics should only be a scientific tool for the Sampling Theory to reach its height, which has always been well understood by its creators. Conventional statistics can indeed be addressed in appendices of standards in sampling, but not the other way around. Until the Sampling Theory is recognised as the main body of a standard on sampling, incorrect sampling technologies will plague the market, and make it impossible for mining operations to optimise their mining and metallurgical processes. This paper makes a short list of correct new sampling technologies that have been created with respect to the principles taught in the Sampling Theory. Also, suggestions are presented to create better international standards on sampling, which would provide a stronger incentive for manufacturers to build correct sampling systems, and for engineering firms to install only sampling systems that respect the rules of sampling correctness listed in the Sampling Theory.

Deep sewer tunnels are required to meet future growth demands of the City of Austin?s down-town redevelopment. The tunnel is 18,000 ft long and varies in finished diameter from 54 inches to 96 inches. The tunnel crosses under Austin?s Town Lake three times and there are four main work shaft sites. Geology, groundwater, foundations, downtown redevelopment, and an active, healthy community put significant constraints on the design. This paper discusses a major underground project for downtown Austin and discusses the risk considerations and the opportunities the design team took toward optimizing the project design for the construction phase.

THE Enos Coal Mining Co. owns an area underlaid by coal, of approximately 5000 acres. This property is situated 9 miles from Oakland City, in the southern part of Indiana. The mine has been in operation 5 years, during which time some 350 acres have been stripped, and stripping is now proceeding at the rate of about 100 acres per year. TOPOGRAPHY These coal lands consist of gently-rolling agricultural fields which in times past were farmed for wheat. There is no timber and but very little brush to contend with. The overburden varies from 10 to 60 ft. in depth. A thin bed of slate overlies the coal, followed by limestone, which varies from 3 to 15 ft.; this, in turn, is followed by sandstone, slate, shale and clay. There is a very wide variation in the thickness of all of these beds. The coal has an average thickness of 5 ft., and is a good grade of high-volatile bituminous. MINING OPERATIONS Briefly, the sequence of operations is: drilling holes with churn drills; blasting with L. 0. X.; stripping overburden to, uncover coal and, finally taking up the coal, which is sent to a tipple for cleaning and sizing. In order to show what is being accomplished by the use of L. 0. X., results will be shown from May to November, 1926, inclusive, and compared to the same period in 1925. No work was done in No. 1 pit during May, 1925, hence all figures are unduly low for this month.

Based on the underground measurements, physical model test of simulated materials in the laboratory and finite element analysis, this paper demonstrates the pattern and process of roof fall over the tip-to-face area in the fully mechanized coalfaces. The main factors that affect the stability of the immediate roof are thoroughly studied including the fracture position and tilt angle of the main roof, the tensile strength (Rt) and cohesive force (c) of the immediate roof, and type and resistance of the powered support. Based on these factors, this paper proposes the basic process of immediate roof breakage a. follows: As the longwall farm advances, the main roof breaks and then rotates. A tensile fracture zone will be formed in the immediate roof under the fracture line of the main roof. A caving zone (plastic zone) will be formed in unsupported area between coalface and canopy tip. If these two zones overlap the immediate roof will be completely unstable. Under this condition, powered support will have difficulties lo control the rod. Therefore it is necessary to study the process of immediate roof breakage and look for effective methods for controlling the roof.

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 in New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be widespread through much of the Tasman fold belts of Eastern Australia. Production is estimated to be some 500,000 carats from several small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration, though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond content has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia during the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives. Of those, 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe, however, the 1200 Ma high-grade Argyle lamproite and associated nearby alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable. Its current annual production is 40 million carats valued at about US$400 million. Production from the open pit will be sustainable until at least 2003.

THE gravity magnitudes obtained by means of observations with the Eötvös balance in the field are necessarily resultant or total effects due to all abnormalities of mass distribution, including even the effects due to the ellipticity and rotational motion of the whole earth. Since the object of the survey is to isolate the effects which arise solely from some particular subterranean feature, and to deduce therefrom the configuration and extent of this feature, the first step is to eliminate from the observed effects all those due to "disturbing" (i, e., unwanted) features, whether above or below the surface of the ground. The disturbing features have different characteristics, according to their situation relative to the center of the balance and to the horizontal plane through the foot of the balance, or station point; this diversity was recognized by Eötvös, who divided the total effects into so-called Normal, Terrain, Topographical, Cartographical and Subterranean effects. This classification has been adhered to by most subsequent investigators, but the writer prefers to employ the term "three-dimensional," which really indicates the essential character of the class of effect known as "Subterranean," at any, rate from the standpoint of the computer of effects. Before disturbing effects can be eliminated, the features must be measured up or surveyed, whether by topographical, mining, or boring methods, and then the effects of each feature calculated and subtracted from the total observed effects. After this the problem of interpreting the residual effects will itself necessitate the computation of the assumed feature, or even a series of trial features.
