Soon after the Broken Hill Limited started operations at their Iron and Steel Works at Newcastle, NSW, it was found necessary to install a mill for rolling small merchant bars, rounds, etc.An arrangement of the first mill laid down is shown on Plate 1., Fig. 1. This mill commenced operations on the 18th July, 1917.The feed for this mill was rolled in the existing 18-in. mill and sheared to the lengths required before being delivered to the billet storage yard. The billet storage yard is 90 ft. span, and is served by one 10-ton electric overhead travelling crane. Billets were placed on the billet bed preparatory to being charged into the heating furnace.The heating furnace was of the continuous recuperative with end discharge and had a hearth 40 ft. long by 10 ft. wide. The billets were pushed through the furnace by means of two hydraulic rams, which could either act together and push one row of billets, or act singly and push two rows of billets. This furnace was fired by producer gas from the producers shown on Plate I., Fig. l.The gas was conveyed to the furnace by means of a brick underground flue.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines utilized a central composite experimental design to investigate leaching kinetics of pure chalcopyrite in the sulfuric acid-oxygen system. The six factors studied were oxygen pressures of 150, 300 and 450 PSI, leach temperatures of 35O, 65O, and 95O C, oxygen-to-chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5, leach times of 8, 16 and 24 hours, initial acid strengths of 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 g H,SO,/g chalcopyrite and pyrite to chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0, 1, and 2. Chemical analysis and oxygen consumption measurements indicatedthat leaching occurs through three consecutive reactions. Temperature was the primary determinant of leach rate and solution acidity was the primary determinant of oxygen consumption, sulfur oxidation, and activation energy.

The Smelter Control Research Association, Inc. (SCRA) was established in 1971 by domestic primary copper producers to investigate processes for removal of sulfur oxides and particulates from copper reverberatory furnace stack gases. The Association maintains a continuing review of developments related to sulfur oxide and particulate control technology, and conducts pilot-plant-investigations of scrubbing processes with feed streams of copper reverberatory furnace off-gases. In its first year of operation, SCRA reviewed over 100 processes proposed for sulfur dioxide removal. As could be anticipated, the frequency of receipt of proposals relating to improvements in sulfur, dioxide control technology has now declined. However, the number of such proposals still being received indicates continuing research on both wet and dry scrubbing systems, and indicates a widespread awareness, of shortcomings of proposed control. Despite the fact that an almost unbelievable number of processes has been proposed for sulfur dioxide control, few have progressed beyond the conceptual stage, and only a limited few have been subjected to thorough pilot-scale evaluation. The most extensive pilot-scale and demonstration-scale investigations have been. devoted to the so-called throwaway processes employing limestone or lime slurry scrubbing. This work has, in turn, for the most part been on utility plant stack gases, containing from 500 to 3,000 ppm sulfur dioxide.

Whilst the fossil fuel-based power industry moves towards carbon capture and storage (CCS) or so-called 'geosequestration', the minerals industry should adapt to reap the benefits of the new technology. If CCS becomes viable, the door is open to potential key developments in mineral processing. For example, truly continuous steelmaking could at last be realised using natural or manufactured gas combined with generic melt circulation. Iron ore fines would form a thin molten layer moving countercurrent to the gaseous reductant on one side of a melt circulation loop with efficient post-combustion without deleterious effects of slag accumulation on the other. This eliminates oxygen steelmaking because carbon has no access to the circulating molten iron. Steelmaking merely requires addition of the appropriate low level of carbon and in-line impurities removal to meet product specification. Concerning non-ferrous smelting, nothing short of virtually zero gas emission will be acceptable in the future. For dolomite-hosted Zn/Pb sulfide ores, typified by those in the Carpentaria region of Northern Australia, the way forward proposed is sulfur fixation at the mine site employing the highly exothermic reaction of SO2 with dolomite, followed by encapsulation of sulfated dolomite in fused ore slag. This releases enough energy for direct ore smelting to individual metal products. However, without CCS the strategy would be unacceptable because of greenhouse gas emissions. The scheme is advocated for direct ore smelting at McArthur River. As a result, the environmental problems of disposal of flotation tailings are avoided. Also, highly energy intensive ultra-fine grinding is eliminated, as indeed froth flotation itself, with overall very significant energy savings and exceptionally high increases in metals recovery. Zinc and lead recoveries approaching 99 per cent are predicted to be entirely feasible.

"Cement" means binding agent or glue. It is derived from the Latin word "Caementum," the name of a limestone, chips of which were used in mortar more than 2,000 years ago in Italy. During the middle ages "cement" or "cement" generally denoted mortar. Today it means any binding material. The Thomas Register lists nearly 200 classifications for "cement" including automobile cement, household cement, rubber cement, etc. The material most commonly associated with this word, however, is portland cement which, when mixed with water and allowed to hydrate, is a ceramic binding material used to cement aggregates (crushed stone, gravel and sand) together in "concrete," the most universally used building material of today. It is estimated that more tons of concrete are used annually than all other building materials put together including steel, lumber, gypsum, bricks, tiles, aluminum and glass. Its use in foundations, building construction, sanitary work, dams, railroads, and highways, makes it difficult to conceive of modem civilization without concrete. A survey made in October 1955 showed the following uses of portland cement: [Percent Highways20 Nonresidential buildings20 Residential buildings15 Military construction10 Sewer and water works8 Public utilities10 Other (conservation, farm, and maintenance and repair)17 100] As of today, the percentage for highways is probably even higher. Ceramic binding materials have unquestionably been used in construction work for thousands of years. The mortar between the blocks of the great pyramids was calcined gypsum (plaster of paris). The use of calcined and slaked limestone goes back earlier than the Roman Empire. Gypsum, however, is relatively soft, and common lime mortar is not "hydraulic," i.e., it does not harden under water. The Greeks and Romans discovered later that an addition of a finely divided active siliceous material (Santorin earth or Pozzolana) would react with slaked lime to form a stronger, and hydraulic, cement. The Appian Way in Italy, Colosseum, and the great Aqueducts built by the Romans were made with this type cement, and some of these structures are still in existence today. However, not until 1756 did some serious research result in the development of better cements. In that year the English engineer, John Smeaton produced a stronger cement by burning a limestone containing considerable proportions of clayey impurities. Other investigations and improvements were made by Bryan Higgins, Bergmann, Joseph Parker, L. J. Vicat, J. F. John, James Frost, and I. C. Johnson.2 Traditionally, but perhaps unfairly to others, the invention of the prototype of today's portland cement is credited to the English mason Joseph Aspdin who in 1824 obtained a patent and gave the product its name, because in color the mortar produced from it resembled a natural building stone obtained from the British Isle of Portland. The contributions of Johnson and Aspdin were primarily the important step of preparing a synthetic mixture of lime and clay without depending on raw materials found in nature which might contain such elements in desirable proportions. "Audrey Resources' Mobrun Mine is located in Dufresnoy Township some 30 km to the northeast of Rouyn-Noranda. The Mobrun tine deposits consist of two major massive sulphide lenses; the newly discovered 1100 lens located 450 m south of the Main zone, and one ntellite lens, the 850-870-930 complex.The 1100 lens is hosted in a large pyroclastic unit bounded to the mouth by rhyolite and andesite flows and by a thick rhyolite unit to the art h. stratigraphically belon the three lenses. It consists of approximately 15 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 10.4 Mt are of economic ade. The Main lens lies comformably above thick rhyolite flows, ecciated and pyritized by the sulphide horizon, and is overlain by ttercalated ash tuffs and rhyolites which host the over-lying satellite ns. The Main lens consists of 3,3 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 523 000 tgrade0.80% Cu, 2.44%Zn,30.19 g/t Ag, and2.2 g/t Au he richer satellite lens (180 000 t) is part of the same volcanic stem and resulted from a resurgence of hydrothermal activity. ructure played a role in the final geometry of the deposits but did not eatly affect the volcanogenic and stratabound nature of the lens. Total production since the start of operations in 1985 amounts to 58 000 t and is restricted to the Main lens. his volume records the "clay symposium" that featured the geology side of the Annual Meeting of the Institute at St. Louis, February 19-22, 1951. The symposium consisted of four sessions held under the joint sponsorship of the Geology Subdivision and the Industrial Minerals Division AIME and the Society of Economic Geologists. Its main purpose was to define or outline certain problems of clay and laterite genesis, and the papers herein, which were presented at the first three sessions, deal for the most part with individual deposits or special problems. The fourth session was a seminar concerned almost wholly with a discussion of "problems." The discussion follows the papers in the volume. The clay symposium was not the work of an appointed committee. It was thought up and inspired by John J. Collins, who so ably supervised and co- ordinated the mining, geology, and geophysics program for the 1950 annual meeting of the Institute. After requesting Dr. A. F. Frederickson to get material together on clay and laterites for the St. Louis meeting, Mr. Collins visited Dr. Frederickson and discussed this project with him in greater detail. By that time their interest and enthusiasm had spread to others in the field. The Geology Subdivision, the Industrial Minerals Division, and the Society of Economic Geologists by common consent turned over the organization of the program to Dr. Frederickson. Mr. Collins continued in active touch with Dr. Frederickson and gave him every assistance. Dr. E. C. Harder and Dr. W. D. Keller read all the material comprising the symposium, and their comment was made available to Dr. Frederickson, who did much to put papers and discussion in final shape for publication. To the Karl Eilers Memorial Fund--one of the Funds that enables the Institute to publish books of this kind, to the authors of the various papers, to the contributors to the discussion, and to Messrs. Collins and Frederickson the Institute and readers of this book are indebted.

Impacts of mining on surface water and groundwater occur frequently not only in active mines but in abandoned mines, then the establishment of effective legal mechanisms for the regulation and control of mine waters is a necessary step in order to avoid pollution from mine waters and in consequence to contribute for a sustainable development of the mining industry. Currently there is a lack of a specific European legislation about mine waters and this absence of legislation occurs too at national level in many European countries. This absence of an European specific regulatory framework for mine water pollution questions the effectiveness and the applicability of the current legislation and this fact has led the EC to put forward proposals legislation to adequately deal with environmental and social consequences of mining, and among those proposals is a draft for a directive on waste from the extractive industry that includes provisions for mine water pollution.

Intensive uranium mining activities at the Curilo deposit in Bulgaria has caused widespread contamination over a wide area. A number of receptors including soils and watercourses as well as the ecosystems in the area have been severely affected. Even today, 10 years after the cease of activities, acidic waters generated from the abandoned mining works, the low-grade ore and waste dumps contaminate soil, surface- and groundwater. The present paper describes in general the environmental status of the wider Curilo area and examines the potential of preventive and remedial measures that can be applied in situ to rehabilitate the site and restore the ecosystem. The main rehabilitation technologies examined include modification of the acid generation potential of the pollution sources, treatment of the acidic drainage by means of a natural wetland and in situ bioremediation the of contaminated soils. Finally, a number of efficient indicators are proposed so that the rehabilitation potential at Curilo and similar heavily contaminated sites is assessed.

Electrospark Deposition (ESD) is a low heat-input, high energy density, micro-welding process. The short pulse duration and high-pulse frequency, in combination with the small amount of material transferred during each pulse, results in the evolution of extremely rapid cooling rates, believed to approach 105-106 °C/s [1]. This rapid solidification event results in the refinement of the microstructure to the nanostructured or amorphous level [2, 3]. Figure 1 displays the resultant microstructure of an Al-17%Si alloy deposited by the ESD process. Furthermore, it was determined that the microstructure of the deposit remained unchanged after subsequent layers were welded onto the presented layer. Freeforming of materials is a rapid prototyping process in which the deposited feedstock is built-up to the desired geometry in a near-net shape manner. Figure 2 displays the automated set-up employed produce three dimensional freeformed objects via multiple deposition trials of the ESD process. The automated XYZ table is equipped with CNC software to transform CAD renderings into three dimensional tool paths. Figure 3 displays an Al-12Si freeformed gear (2" diameter, 12 teeth) produced by the ESD process, prior to removal from the substrate. An SEM analysis of the freeformed component showed that the microstructure did not coarsen during the deposition of subsequent layers during the freeforming process, as depicted in Figure 4, resulting in the production of a bulk nanostructured component. This paper represents a summary of the capabilities of ESD to fabricate advanced materials possessing refined microstructure. In particular, results on the microstructural evolution obtainable for various wear-related systems will be presented. In addition, the feasibility of using the ESD process to freeform three-dimensional objects via multiple deposition passes will be presented and accompanied by a characterization of the properties of the freeformed component. This paper describes rock slope remediation performed along America’s first Superhighway, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and in particular, the specialized drilling equipment designed and built by Pacific Blasting to complete this work. This S-month project was performed on an existing rock cut slope within the Bedford Narrows, a gap formed by the Juniata River through Evitts Mountain. These rocks are in the folded Juniata and Tuscarora Formations within the Valley and Ridge Province and strike northeast with near vertical to slightly overturned bedding.

Between 1989 and 1991, the greatest number of accidents in surface coal and metal/nonmetal mines involved haulage trucks. In 1995, the most frequently cited factor contributing to the 100 fatalities in these mines was powered haulage. In 1996, over 50% of the 84 Fatalities in mining that year were in surface mining. Because some of the world's largest mobile equipment is used in surface mines, and this equipment is involved in so many accidents and fatalities, new technologies are needed to alert truck drivers and people in spaces around the truck to the possibilities of collisions.

Remote control systems for industrial applications have advanced since the early 20 years, increasing its capabilities by utilizing new electronic technology. This electronic “tool” has benefited many mining operations, making them a safer place to work and at the same time more productive. Almost any operation that presently uses a man at the controls of the machine or using a wired tether control, is a candidate for improvement by the addition of a remote control. Remote control systems add safety, reliability and productivity at a cost that is usually recovered in mere months after installation.

The diffusivity of carbon (0.1 wt pct C) in Fe-Nz alloys (0 to 100 pct Ni) has been determined for the temperature range 860° to 1100°C. As a function of nickel content, the diffusivity has a maximum near 60 pct Ni (the maximum diffusivity being about 1.3 times that in the absence of nickel); the activation energy has a maximum between 40 and 50 pct Ni and a maximum between 80 and 90 pct Ni. The difference between the minimum activation energy and that in iron is about 3000 cal pev g-atom; Do has a minimum between 40 and 50 pct Ni and a maximum between 80 and 90 pct Ni. The results cannot be rationalized by an approximate thermodynamic treatment. THE diffusivity of carbon has been determined in a number of iron alloys over a limited concentration range. It seemed desirable to investigate a system which allows an extended range of alloy composition within a single-phase region. The Fe-Ni system is ideal in this respect, in that all alloys from 100 pct Fe to 100 pct Ni are fee in a convenient temperature range.&apos; The carbon diffusivity was determined by a decar-burization method. The experimental procedure was identical with that used to determine the diffusivity of carbon in y Fe-Co alloys.2 The experimental data are given in Table I. A small correction (order of a few percent) has been made to the measured carbon loss to correct for the carbon lost from the ends of the cylinders.&apos; Since the diffusivity of carbon varies with carbon content the measured diffusivity is an average value for a carbon content between zero (surface) and that at the center of the sample at the end of the decarburization periods. In making the correction in D to 0.1 wt pct C it is assumed that the measured D corresponds to the arithmetical mean of the carbon content at the surface and at the center of the sample at the end of the decarburization period.3 Since this correction is small (<4 pct in D) and since for our decarburization times the changes in carbon content at the center of the sample was small the mean carbon content could have been taken as half the initial value. It is further assumed that the change in D with carbon content for the alloys is the same as that for the diffusion of carbon in iron. From the data of Wells, Batz, and Mehl4 and of smith5 the correction of D from the mean carbon content to 0.1 wt pct C is 0.3 (0.1 - mean wt pct C). The results for iron are given in Ref. 2. Within the experimental error log Do.l%C for each alloy is a linear function of 1/T; the constants for the equation determined by the method of least squares are given in Table I. The deviations of the experimental points from the least-squares line are of the order of 2 pct in D. A comparison of our results for the diffusivity of carbon in nickel with those of other investigations is shown in Fig. 1. The lower curve in Fig. 1 is a linear extrapolation of values calculated* from the equation of Diamond6 for the relaxation time (temperature range 100° to 500°C). The results indicate a small increase in the activation energy over the temperature range 100° to 1400°C; however, it is difficult to say whether the change in Q is real or experimental error. Certainly the change in Q is less than the variation of 5 kcal per g-atom in the diffusivity of carbon in a iron.6 The experimental data for all the alloys are plotted in Fig. 2. As a function of nickel content the diffusivity has a maximum near 60 wt pct Ni at all temperatures investigated and possibly a minimum between 80 and 90 wt pct Ni for temperatures below 1000°C. The activation energy, Q, and log Do are plotted as a function of the nickel content in Fig. 3. Due to the limited temperature range of our experiments neither Q nor Do can be determined precisely; the activation energies appear to be consistent to ±0.3 kcal per g-atom; however the deviation from the absolute values may be considerably larger, see Table II. The Do values probably have little significance. The solid line for Do in Fig. 3 represents the values required to reproduce the experimental values for D when Q has values represented by the upper solid line The diffusivity of carbon may be expressed in terms of the mobility B22, the activity coefficient r2,

I would like to start this paper by looking back about twenty years to see where we have been in the mining industry. We will also look forward a bit and talk about what lies ahead. Here is what has happened to the world economy since the 1970s. Economic growth was strong in the early 70s, but slipped into a recession in the middle of the decade. Then, after a fairly decent recovery recession struck again in the early 80s and since then growth has been rather sporadic. All in all, it has been a real roller coaster ride. There will continue to be plenty of ups and downs in the world economy in the future.

Combustion energies of barium and strontium were measured by means of the combustion bomb calorimeter. The heats of formation obtained for the oxides were ?H298.15 = -139,060 ± 700 cal/mole of barium oxide (BaO) and ?H298.15 = -144,440 ± 400 cal/mole of strontium oxide (SrO). Tables containing heats and free energies of formation from 298.15° to 2,000° K were prepared.

"General *The mining experiences of the coal mining industry in Western Canada have been extremely varied, with the mining companies having to adjust their operations or fail due to the harsh economy of the country in the first part of the century. The bituminous or mountain mines had the railways as main consumers with, at times, optimism that potential steel producers would require metallurgical coal. The prairie and foothills mines mainly provided household fuels, with the fine coal sold to local thermal power plants at discounted prices. In practically all cases fuel competition was very keen, and the less successful mines ceased operations in short-time spans. Knowledge of the parameters that governed the success or failures of the past coal operations should be of value to the present and future mining companies. The initial coal mines were small and were started to supply local demand. These mines had little in the way of capital machinery, engineering, or transportation equipment; therefore the mining methods and mine plans were very simple. The first industrial-sized mines imported most of their management and mining methods from other mining areas, mainly Great Britain. It took time to change the bias of management and mining methods to the requirements of strata characteristics, with rapid closure to those mines that were slow to adapt working methods. The main markets for coal were for household fuel, thermal power plants and railways, with very few other industrial markets developed. The economy of the period was harsh and cyclic and the coal mines were affected more than most industries by these boom and bust periods. It led to the survival of the fittest or the most efficient. Due to the economy, mechanization was introduced to the mines very slowly, with the inability to sell coal fines at a profit being another reason for the delay. Manual labour with hand tools was the main means of production. The work was heavy and arduous, and the pay was based on contract coal tonnage; therefore both men and management paid close attention to details so that nonessential work could be eliminated. Mine openings were dimensioned so that coal could be loaded easily by hand and support requirements were kept to the minimum. Transporting and handling the timber supports required heavy labour; thus the most efficient dimensions were chosen to suit the strata. On the other hand, during the main production seasons the mines tried to make the strata stress work for them so that the pressure was kept on the coal face to keep the coal loose while the strata, a short distance back, was induced to cave to minimize the abutment stresses. This caused mining to be an art, using skills developed by experience with the strata. This led to the development of efficient mine layouts with the openings dimensioned to the strength of the strata and the type of support available. The lack of capital and mechanization, and the manual labour, induced the mines to correlate their service and haulage systems with their mining methods. This caused many innovations that proved very practical."

The choice of equipment to be applied to a given installation by the Application Engineer begins with the data as presented to him by the user. This point in the relationship establishes a communication link, which will decide whether or not the correct piece of Overhead Equipment is applied at the most economic advantage to the user. The role played by the user cannot be minimized. No one knows better than he, just what work he expects to accomplish with this piece of machinery. However, all too often, he oversimplifies the requirements, and along with minimal crane and building parameters, merely refers to one of the following crane classifications as defined by The Crane Manufacturing Association of America, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. This approach places the ultimate user in an unfair position, since he has then assumed the status of the machinery designer and must, therefore, assume the responsibility of the success or failure of the operation of that piece of machinery. If the user selects a Class "C" crane for his job requirement, when actually a Class "B" crane can adequately handle the work load, he is not offering the most economic solution to his company and added little to the cranes service capabilities.

Many publications to date have advocated under- seas mining operations, optimistically overlooking the paucity of information on mineral distribution and the ocean environments in which minerals occur. Such articles (smattered with opinion, as is this article) are herein tempered by my more conservative views on the economics of mining under the seas. For purposes of this paper, underseas mining refers only to the deeper surficial deposits of the continental shelf and the deep sea floor, i.e., the deposits of phosphorite and manganese nodules.
