"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines began a broad program of exploration of various proportion in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in the fall of 1943. As a part of this project, exploring was done at theLittle Pittsburg property in 1945. The work included driving a 500-foot crosscut from the No, 6 level and drilling four diamond core drill holes to test the behavior of the Little Pittsburg vein at depth. This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. "PEC uranium deposit, 100 km southwest of Coppermine, was discovered by diamond drilling in 1976 following ground and airborne geophysical surveys, geological mapping, geochemical surveys and boulder prospecting that were initiated as the result of the discovery of uraniferous sandstone outcrops in 1969 by geologists of Aquitaine Company of Canada Ltd.The deposit is within gently northeasterly dipping medium to coarse-grained Unit 11 quartzitic sandstone of Neohelikian Dismal Lakes Group. The deposit is from 10 m to 70 m above the base of the sandstone which, beneath the deposit, non-conformably overlies weathered and altered Aphebian granite of Great Bear Batholith or unconformably overlies rubble breccia, conglomerate and medium-grained Unit 8 sandstone of Paleohelikian Hornby Bay Group.A northeasterly trending, 500 m wide graben, bounded by the steeply dipping northeasterly striking Imperial and Aquitaine faults, contains the deposit which is 1.1 km long by up to 340 m wide. The deposit overlies a post-Hornby Bay Group, pre-Dismal Lakes Group topographic high. Uranium principally occurs as stratabound, often peneconcordant bands; a lesser amount of uranium is fracture controlled.Stratabound uranium exists in gently easterly dipping, subparallel bands ranging in thickness from 1.5 m to 6.0 m. Pitchblende, coffinite and sooty black uranium oxides occur as interstitial disseminations and grain coatings subparallel to bedding; they also replace pyrite and form narrow veinlets.Small amounts of torbernite, carnotite and cuprosklodowskite coat pitchblende and are disseminated within mineralized bands. Pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, cove/lite, digenite, azurite, malachite, arsenopyrite, glaucodot, niccolite, bravoite (? ), goethite, hematite and magnetite as well as quartz, barite, calcite, biotite, chlorite and clay minerals exist within the mineralized bands. Uranium grades of 0.1 % to 0.3 % U3O8 over thicknesses of 1 m to 2 m are typical.A steeply dipping fracture zone near the Imperial fault contains sooty black uranium oxides, torbernite, carnotite and cuprosklowdowskite as well as sulphides, cobalt arsenides, quartz and carbonate. The zone may reach 70 m long; its true width is about 1.9 m. Uranium grades range up to 5.18% up, over0.9m.Pitchblende and coffinite from PEC deposit have been dated at 1.08 ± .10 Ga with possible remobilization at .45 Ga. The deposit contains an inferred 3,150 tonnes of U3O8."

When shaft sinking was begun on the Vendome Mines property in the Barraute area of north-western Quebec, there was no indication of the flat mud seam that was later encountered, and no special precautions were taken in applying conventional methods of grouting. Failure of the first cementing attempt emphasized the important fact that mud is an adverse condition in grouting. A method was then devised that would remove the clay from those portions of the seam adjacent to the shaft, replacing it by a bulky mixture of cement and sawdust. Tests were carried out to insure that the seam had been properly sealed and that excavation could be resumed without endangering the shaft.

The Queens Bored Tunnels consist of 11,000 feet of 19'-6" inside diameter tunnels mined through rock, mixed face and dense glacial till, constructed with bolted gasketed one pass reinforced concrete liner. The tunnels are to be excavated with a pressurized face TBM, either EPB or slurry. The construction of the tunnels will require ground stabilization in the mixed face area, instrumentation and monitoring of railway infrastructure, underpinning of bridges, relocation and protection of utilities, demolition of some industrial buildings, construction of open-cut approach tunnels and emergency exits and vent plants. The purpose of this paper is to describe the scope of work, the suggested methodology and the proposed construction schedule.

A series of performance studies were conducted using countercurrent column flotation to recover a marketable clean coal product from existing preparation plant fine waste streams. The test work was conducted at several preparation plant sites in Kentucky and Virginia using a 150-mm (6-in.) inside diameter column that was 5.8 m (19 ft) high. Both thickener feed and classifying cyclone overflow with a typical size distribution of 150 µm (100 mesh) X 0 were tested. The percent solids of the column flotation feed varied from 1.5% to 15% while the ash content ranged from about 30% to 60%. The concentrates produced contained 2% to 10% ash with Btu recoveries of nearly 90% using 0.12 to 1.25 kg/t (0.25 to 2.5 lbs per st) fuel oil and 0.12 kg/t (0.25 lbs per st) MIBC. These results were consistent with or better than results obtained in preliminary laboratory scale column flotation evaluation. Test results from seven different seams are discussed as well as scale-up relationships used to design a full-scale installation presently in operation.

Introduction A staccato beat rings out across the Australian bush. The stamps are at work, slowly pulverizing gold-bearing ore for a patient, grizzled prospector. This is the State Battery near Marvel Loch, a tiny 22.6-t/d (25-stpd) capacity gold plant operated by the Western Australia government. It is one of many such plants located in remote corners of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. They are miniature custom mills operated for the benefit of prospectors and small mine operators. These state batteries are so called because they are operated by state governments and because the principal item of machinery in the plants are stamp batteries. They are fascinating anachronisms - throwbacks to times past, a century ago, to the hard and heady existence of gold rush days. Marvel Loch plant Typical of these operations, and perhaps a trifle more sophisticated than most, is the plant near Marvel Loch, a small center for mining and farming about 400 km (250 miles) due east of Perth. Marvel Loch. The name evokes visions of a pristine lake set in a cool, green, misty glen of the Scottish highlands. Actually, it is probably a hot, dry salt pan somewhere nearby. Just where the "loch" is difficult to discern. There is no sign of it on the map.

The South Texas Mineral Trend is now estimated to contain uranium reserves of 150 million pounds U308 . Within the past year, an estimated 10 million pounds U308 have been added to this gross reserve. It is probable that a similar amount has been identified in previously unknown orebodies that, as yet, have not been delimited or announced. Exploration that was limited in the past to a narrow band containing only the known trend has now expanded into older sediments updip and into younger units towards the coast. Uranium host formations are also now being explored at a considerable depth and distance eastward from known deposits. Only about 30 percent of the potential uranium host rocks in South Texas have been adequately explored. Geology The South Texas uranium deposits are confined mainly to sediments of the Tertiary system. Reserves are divided almost equally between the Whitsett Formation of the Jackson Group, the Catahoula Formation, and the Oakville Formation. A minor amount of the reserves occurs in sands of the Goliad Formation which may be either in the Tertiary or Quaternary Epoch. Figure 1 is a geologic column of the South Texas uranium host formations. These producing formations are marked with a mine symbol but there are also several prospect symbols that denote potentially favorable uranium host formations both younger and older from the producing formations. It is generally accepted by most workers in South Texas that the source for the uranium is the volcanic ash that is abundant within several of the formations. Likewise, the required reductant is considered to be hydrogen sulfide gas, derived from deeper seated hydrocarbon accumulations, that emanate upward along fault zones into favorable host-rock sand units. Within this basic framework of source, host, structure and hydrocarbons is where most of the reserves have been discovered and where most of the current exploration is either concentrating or expanding. Structure in South Texas is predominantly faults. Swarms of faults exist in zones paralleling the coast and running from the Rio Grande to the Sabine River. These faults are usually growth faults with the down-dropped block on the coastward side. Displacement may range from a few feet to a few hundred feet. Dips are near vertical in the younger rocks at the surface but become flatter as the fault cuts older beds in the subsurface. A map of the oil and gas fields in South Texas indicates a correlation between these fault swarms and accumulations of hydrocarbons. It is not coincidental that the known uranium trends closely follow the hydrocarbon accumulations and the faults swarms, all of which supports the theory of uranium concentration by groundwater movement through volcanic ash-rich beds into favorable host rocks impregnated with reducing hydrogen sulfide gases that migrate upward along fault planes from hydrocarbon accumulations. History Newcomers to South Texas are often amazed that active entry is possible in a district that has produced uranium for over 20 years. Understanding the conditions and occurrences of the past would explain why the opportunity still exists for companies not now active in South Texas to become active. Uranium was discovered in the middle 1950's in sandstone units of the Jackson Group at Tordillo Hill in Karnes County. This discovery was followed by a rush involving most of the major uranium exploration companies as well as several of the not-so-major. Those western prospectors who were used to numerous outcrops and neat land subdivisions were further discouraged by the small size and low grade of the deposits. Then after a brief blast, they left South Texas as they found it and returned to the richer diggings of New Mexico and Wyoming. Susquehanna Western was the only one to stay and develop mines in the area. Eventually they discovered enough ore along the Jackson outcrop to warrant constructing a small mill. They managed, with limited budget and diligent effort, to find enough ore to keep the mill going and eventually expanded into exploration in other formations. By the late 1960's, Susquehanna was mining from both the Jackson and Oakville deposits. About this time, the oil companies began to enter the uranium industry and found, that because of sound forward planning, they controlled the uranium on vast tracts of acreage. At this time, which was more than ten years after discovery, there was so little literature on South Texas uranium deposits that the oil companies began following the known trends and off-setting known orebodies. This, and a few kicks on some well gammaray logs, lead to the discovery of new areas in formations that previously had n o uranium discoveries. Still, the following of the trend as it crossed from one formation to another was the main geologic guide. Nowadays, we in South Texas feel that science has entered into the quest to discover new orebodies. The work of Galloway has indicated new pathways to explore. The understanding of multiple stages of oxidation and reduction has created some doubt about areas drilled in the past and abandoned. The expanded use of oil well logs and geochemical prospecting has lured the more progressive exploration companies off the mineral trend and into unexplored areas. Prognostication The fact that uranium exploration in South Texas has been active for only the past ten years is not an indication that South Texas is not a major uranium district. The geology of the South Texas uranium deposits as described here serves only to indicate that similar geology extends in all directions from the known mineral trend as can be seen on Figure 2.

Drilling at Ipswich during the last twelve years by the Queensland Department of Mines has proved large quantities of reserves which have assured the security of the field for many years to come. This is perhaps the greatest contribution to the development of the field since its discovery in 1827.The drilling campaign commenced in 1950 and by the end of 1961 comprised 242 holes totalling 180,220 ft.Intersections of formations and seams, accompanied by detailed surface mapping, led to more precise knowledge of the geology of the field than was previously possible, and clarified many problems of correlation. Productive formations are part of the Middle Triassic Ipswich Coal Measures, a 4,300 ft sequence of fresh-water sediments with some interbedded volcanics. They are overlain by the Upper Triassic Bundamba Group and the Lower Tertiary Booval Group.Reserves disclosed by drilling amount to 171,487,000 tons, comprising 109,407,000 tons "measured" and 62,080,000 tons "indicated". The security of these reserves encouraged many collieries to instal modern efficient mining machinery and washing plants.The climax of recent development of the resources of the field will be the commissioning in 1966 of a £33 million 360 MW power station in the Swanbank district which will consume 14 million tons of coal during its 30 year life and will have a peak demand of some 20,000 tons per week.Drilling is continuing and is expected to prove additional reserves which will justify further development of the field.INTRODUCTIONUntil 1949 there had been no concerted effort to test systematically the resources of the whole Ipswich field. Fifty two known holes totalling 30,500 ft had been drilled, eight of them by the Department of Mines, but because of poor core recovery and inadequate records most of them were of little use in a comprehensive assessment.Development of the field was being retarded by uncertainty regarding reserves and by the general state of the coal mining industry. This paper presents the development of a regrind facility design at BHP BillitonÆs Leinster Nickel Operations (LNO) in Western Australia. The recovery opportunity was identified from an analysis of plant operating data together with scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements on relevant tailings streams from LNO. A laboratory procedure was developed to determine the potential recovery improvement of installing a regrind facility at LNO. The last step in formulating the process flow sheet and defining the process design criteria was to construct and operate a pilot plant, which incorporated four banks of flotation cells and an Xstrata M20 Isa Mill. Pilot plant on/off trials were used to define the expected metallurgical benefit. A prefeasibility engineering design and cost estimate was completed. Following a successful internal business evaluation, a feasibility study is currently underway.

It cannot be said that accurate and reliable ore reserve estimation is the fundamental of any mining operation success. Estimation techniques which are used to estimate the grade distribution of an orebody together with the assessment of uncertainty and risk have a vital influence on the success of any optimisation algorithm. Traditional estimation techniques such as kriging or inverse distance weighting are frequently used for assigning grade values to blocks. Various attempts have been made in order to compare geostatistical estimated methods for ore reserve estimation. This paper aims to evaluate the sensitivity of different estimation methods over changing the block dimension. For this reason, several block models with different dimensions were derived in Chador Malu iron ore mine which is located in 180 km northeast of Yazd in the centre of Iran. Each block model was estimated by different estimation methods such as nearest neighbours (NN), inverse distance (ID) and ordinary kriging (OK). The results of each estimation methods were compared against a control block file created by using the assay results of all blastholes drilled in the ore over four benches of the pit. The results signify that by estimating the large block size, no significant improvement occurred due to the employment of different estimation techniques. Furthermore, the grades estimated based on ID method is more reliable, but OK methods estimated more accurate tonnage.

For the 36th consecutive summer, the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation and the Colorado School of Mines have sponsored “A Total Concept of the Mining Industry” for kindergarten through grade 12 teachers. Teachers from 34 states, plus the District of Columbia and two foreign countries, have graduated from the four-week course. They received six hours of recertification credit. This summer 31 teachers from Colorado, Kentucky, Virginia and Alaska completed the program. The course is unique from other shorter courses in that it solicits teachers of all disciplines from all K-12classes. In addition to the expected earth science and mathematics teachers, the Class of 2004 consisted of educators who teach music, chemistry, biology, social studies, history, basic English and world history. Others in the program included those who teach American history, physical and life science, remedial reading, consumer/family studies, “world of work,” language arts, engineering technology, environmental science, world geography, human anatomy and physiology, and business.

As in organic nature certain animal and vegetable forms have undergone modifications, and thus, as it were, fitted themselves to live in a new environment, so it has been found possible in certain instances to form new metallic combinations which are practically immune to the natural conditions that exist on the earth at the present time. A few of the metals, such as gold, silver, and the metals of the platinum group, are found native, but the commoner heavy metals are nearly always found in the form of oxides or sulphides. For a number of years I have made experiments with a view to finding certain metallic combinations or alloys which would not only resist oxidation and other harmful influences, but would also possess valuable physical properties, which would render them fit for special service. The first decisive step made in this direction was the discovery of an alloy of nickel and chromium in 1898. The properties of this alloy have already been described in a previous paper.' Immediately following the discovery of the nickel-chromium alloy, I produced an alloy of cobalt and chromium, which has likewise been described in the reference given, but the range of proportion between the cobalt and chromium is so great, and the combination is modified to such a marked degree by the introduction of other substances, that I have felt justified in reading another paper on this subject, describing more fully my researches in this particular direction. Acknowledgments I am honored to be named as a recipient of the Antoine M. Gaudin Award, and I would like to briefly single out four groups who deserve a special thank-you relative to this award. The first group consists of Professor Kawatra, the many international support references that he gathered and the Gaudin Committee itself. I know such things don't come without considerable effort by many individuals, and I'm grateful for their support. The second group consists of the management of The Dow Chemical Company, the managements of various mining companies and, in recent years, the management of G. S. Technologies, all of whom supported me, financially and otherwise, in my grinding, flotation and other particle-processing work. Operations people are the most overworked and under recognized people in the world, whether they be in the mining or chemical industry. Obviously, without extensive industrial support, especially from operating personnel in the mining industry, almost nothing about the work contained in this lecture would have, or could have, happened. The third group consists of a number of coworkers who have played key roles in specifically implementing the new flotation-product portion of this lecture. Of these, Bob Hansen, Don Leonard, Basil Fee, Simon Isherwood, Fernando Cones and Marty Meulendyke deserve special recognition. They have not only been dedicated, but they have been great to work with. Also in this third group are many members of the international academic community, especially those at Penn State. Professor Leonard Austin must be singled out because he took me as a young mathematically oriented chemist and taught me to be an effective process-oriented engineer. Without this experience, I would not have had the over 30-year career as an engineer, which I have loved. In addition, Len planted the size-reduction-research virus in my blood, which I can't seem to get rid of. I also need to mention Professor Frank Aplan, whose obvious love of mineral processing and froth flotation helped to create my interest in flotation. Thus, for those of you who don't like my approach to flotation, it's all Frank's fault. The fourth, and certainly not the least, group to thank is my wife, Charlene, and our two sons, Richard and Steven. No one could have a more supportive family. In every sense of the word, my wife has been my partner from the beginningwe were married at the end of my freshman year in college. She has sacrificed much for me, and I will never really be able to express the depth of my gratitude for Charlene's encouragement, loyalty and support over the past 36 years. General comments on froth flotation The industrial process of froth flotation: Where is it going? I'm here to tell you loud and clear that froth flotation is alive, well, and growing. The inherent characteristics of high mineral throughput per unit of capital, low operating cost per unit of feed, high mineral specificity and high operating flexibility have guaranteed froth flotation an important past and a growing future. As with any evolving technology, there are always trends at the industrial level that are primarily driven by economics. INTRODUCTION In the last twelve years, underground stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine have evolved from open cut-and-fill with jacklegs, cribbed raises and electric slushers to ramp-based mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR) with dieselpowered loaders, trucks and drill jumbos. The evolution was swift. Unfortunately, ventilation practices have had trouble keeping pace. Stope ventilation is still too dependent on auxiliary fans and coolers. A single large MCF stope might contain up to eight headings, each of which requires significant ventilation resources when a diesel loader is present. Air is shortcircuited all too frequently through mined-out VCR panels. These factors and the recent rapid decent of the center of mining prompted a study to improve ventilation practices and to more accurately project future requirements. BACKGROUND In 1992, the underground portion of the Homestake Gold Mine produced 8336 kg of gold from 1407 ktons of ore (268,000 oz from 1,551,000 st). The ore is hosted in low to medium grade meta-sediments. Stoping took place from 420 to 2347 m below the surface (1400 to 7700-ft levels). The weighted center of mining was 1662 m deep (5450-ft level) in 1990 and is projected to be 1890 m (6200-ft) in 1993. The deepest level is 2440 m (8000-ft) where the virgin rock temperature (VRT) is 56.1°C (133F). The mine is ventilated by 504 m3/s (1,069,000 cfm) measured at mid-exhaust-circuit density. The air-conditioning system includes an 8.1 MWR (2300 ton) controlled recirculation plant, a 2.0 MWR (580 ton) chilled water plant, a 1.0 MWR (290 ton) exploration drift refrigeration plant, 28 spot-coolers totaling 3.4 MWR (960 tons) and 35 spray coolers totaling 1.5 MWR (420 tons). The mine employs 117 diesel units with a total nameplate rating of 7961 kW (10,672 hp). These units include twenty-four 1.5m3 (2-yd) loaders, twenty-six 2.7m3 (3.5-yd) loaders, fourteen 3.8m3 (5-yd) and two 7.6m3 (10-yd) trucks, and assorted utility vehicles and drill jumbos. THE STUDY In April 1991, the University of Nevada-Reno (Mackay School of Mines) and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology cooperated with Homestake on an MCF study. Mackay instrumented a stope with thermocouples, air velocity meters and hygrometers (Duckworth, 1992). South Dakota Tech conducted a finite-elements computer analysis of a back-filled MCF stope with/without light-weight shotcrete insulation on the sidewalls and back (Chellam, 1992). Homestake conducted an empirical analysis of deep-level MCF stoping. This paper describes the Homestake study. Twenty-three of the forty MCF stopes deeper than 1800 m were surveyed at least once during the last quarter of 1992. The stopes not included were being cable-bolted or back-filled. Figure 1 shows the complexity of one of the ramp-based stoping areas included in the survey. This particular stope has six separate production headings. A baseline wallrock heat load was derived for each stope or heading from psychrometric calculations. Broken ore, waste rock fill and fissure water were noted when present and the effects included in the baseline heat load. Other heat sources often mentioned in the literature such as metabolic heat from workers, heat from explosives and small electric loads were neglected. Fan heat was considered part of the ramp & crosscut heat load and thus not included in the study. Diesel heat was addressed separately. RESULTS Survey results, plotted as the heat flux against VRT, are shown in Figure 2. The equation for the regression line is: W/m2 = 2.1236*VRT - 75.405 The 0.31 correlation coefficient is poor which implies that the results should be used cautiously. Previous experience strongly suggests that differences in productivity are most likely responsible for the scatter in data points. A rapidly advancing stope will have a

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the short wave infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420 nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a quartz-sericite-pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

[The Bureau of Mines well-bore caliper was designed to provide an instrument that could be operated through 2-inch tubing, which 'a used particularly in many input wells on water-flooding projects of eastern, Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma. It should find wide application elsewhere under many other conditions where it has not been possible previously to make caliper logs with the larger probes used on other instruments. The caliper has three additional advantages over other instruments of this type: (1) It measures 4 radii (up to 18 inches) 90° apart with an accuracy of ± 1/4 inch; (2) the measuring arms can be opened and closed at will by remote control; and (3) it is run and operated on a single-conductor, armored electric cable (Amergraph, type 1-H-0). The caliper probe is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and approximately 6 feet in length. The electrical control and measuring circuits are encased in a stainless-steel tubular case. Measuring arms, made of 5/16-inch aluminum tubing, are attached near the lower end of the instrument. Distances the arms are extended are indicated t the surface by a meter calibrated to read directly in inches. Depths at which the radii measurements are taken are indicated by a wireline depth indicator on the cable-reeling. The instrument is not affected by pressure or temperature, it can be run open hole or under pressure through a lubricator. This paper describes and illustrates the instrument and outlines the operating procedures. "Drill and blast represent the most important, and sometimes the costliest processes in the mine. The cost of drilling and blasting operations greatly contributes to the “high cost trends of the overall mining operations” (Afum and Temeng, 2015). The use of available information to improve the drill and blast processes can be the difference between a wasteful process and one that is optimized for costs, safety and desired fragmentation. Mining operations have access to several types of data sets that include a variety of different systems. This information can be used to improve, evaluate and apply processes for drilling and blasting. This may include different types of data from the different stages of the process (before, during and after the drilling and blasting operations), such as hole locations (planned and actual), penetration rates, drill operators, fragmentation (expected and resulting), explosive (design and usage), geology, vibration and others. This information can be used on its own or combined for further analysis to reduce costs, improve safety and evaluate results. Fortunately, due to advances in mining software, drill and blast engineers can exploit this data and create reports to evaluate results and improve the drill and blast process. However, as users start combining information from multiple datasets and establishing standard operating procedures for reporting across multiple sites, it becomes valuable to create auditable, automated and sustainable workflows for handling the information.In some cases, the task of aggregating and standardizing the data formats has already been completed and is available to consumers via the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). A data warehouse team extracts data from the source systems and transforms it so that it is meaningful for decision support (Wixom, Watson, 2007). The author’s initial implementation plan for the drill and blast solution included using data stored at the sites on local servers. However, we learned early in the process that much of the work for aggregating and supplying the required data was already completed and was available in the EDW ready for use. This saved time, reduced risk and added value to the system.The goal for this case study is two-fold: to show how information can be used to make decisions and improve processes, especially highlighting the value of using an EDW for managing drill blast information; and to discuss how technical challenges encountered during the implementations were resolved. This article targets users that want to better manage their drill and blast data or try to set up standardized workflows for using this information.This case study will discuss the process of implementing a drill-and-blast workflow at multiple sites within Freeport-McMoRan (FMI) using both data at the sites and information available from the EDW."

Virtually all mineable Appalachian coal seams exist in a multi-seam environment. This makes it inevitable that most seams will eventually experience interaction induced ground control and mining problems. Indeed, it has been estimated that every working face will experience interaction effects from previous or current workings at least once during its lifetime (1), and that these problems are considerably exaggerated when seams are in close proximity -- a distance of less than 110 feet. The continued increase in multi-seam problems has resulted in considerable research activities over many years (2,3,4,1). Theoretical analysis, numerical and physical model studies, statistical and empirical analysis of numerous interaction related field data have been applied to multi-seam mining situations and have identified many useful trends and design criteria (4,5,6,7). To fully utilize research results and transfer multi-seam mining technology to field engineers, a design model -- USEAM was constructed (8). This model, designed for close seam under-mining situations, was computerized to facilitate utilization. In the current research, a new computer program "MSEAM" was developed to produce a model for both under- and overmining close seam situations. It is hoped that both of these software packages will aid field engineers in using important interactive design criteria to gain a better understanding of interaction mechanisms. Through advance planning with these programs, detrimental interaction may be avoided and minimized, and occasionally a design can be selected which will allow interaction effects to be utilized to the benefit of mining operations.
