13.7-1. General. Iron ore mining in western Europe is mostly carried out underground and only a minor part is mined by open pit methods. Actual open pits of importance in this connection are, among others, Svappavaara in Sweden, Mo i Rana and Sydvaranger in Norway, Corby Mines, Colsterworth, and Scunthorpe in Great Britain, and in western Africa, Nimba and Bong Range in Liberia, and Kedia d’Idjil in Mauritania. The open pit mines of western Africa are of great interest in this connection as they are designed according to European practice and have accepted the same techniques, methods, equipment, etc. as the European mines. In the surface mining of limestone, granite, shale, etc., the technical conditions generally are similar with those in the iron ore mines. Some information will therefore be submitted from typical quarries. The geological conditions at the various iron ore mines and limestone and other quarries vary extensively. In Scandinavia the iron ores occur exclusively in Precambrian rocks. The ore is hard, mostly magnetite or hematite, folded and steep dipping, and hence accessible to surface mining only in the shallow sections. In the mines referred to, open pit mining will last for another 10 to 30 years, whereupon mining has to be continued by underground methods. In France the Minette iron ore has previously been mined in open pits but, because of increased overburden, mining underground with room and pillar methods now dominates. The iron ores are Jurassic, flatlying strata of oolitic type, containing chamosite, siderite, and brown hematite. The British iron ores are mostly of the same origin and appearance as the French deposits, but despite heavy overburden they are preferably mined from the surface. In western Africa, the iron ores are of the same type as in Brazil, i.e., itabirites with high-grade portions resulting from silica-leaching and weathering. The ore contains mostly brown and blue hematite and magnetite. Nimba and Kedia d’Idjil are very similar regarding ore quality and geology. Bong Range is a deposit of low-grade ore which has to be concentrated.

This paper presents a review of computer techniques for the automatic contouring of geological and geophysical data with output as interactive display on graph plotters or graphics terminals and passive display on automatic drafting tables. The advantages of the method of fitting a triangulated surface to randomly distributed data using an advancing front algorithm are described, as well as the technique for determining interpolated values for the production of contour line segments and a contour smoothing algorithm. This contouring method is employed by the Geological Survey of Queensland and is implemented as an interactive system. An alternative method ideally suited to randomly distributed data involves the use of piecewise parametric cubic splines. This method which is ideal for sharp variations in magnitude and areal extent typical of geophysical anomalies is discussed. The mathematics of surface interpolation using non-parametric splines and an explicit piecewise surface fitting technique are discussed. Curve tracing techniques which are suitable for automatic contouring are also presented and the inherent advantages of interactive contouring using on-line plotters and graphics terminals for previewing of displays are described.

INTRODUCTION. IN a previous paper upon the enrichment of mineral veins by later metallic sulphides,† the writer has shown that certain masses of rich ores, such as are found in many mines, either near the water-line or as bonanzas in depth, are of secondary origin, and are due to a leaching of lean ore and the concentration of the material by reaction between the solution and the unaltered ore below. The geological and mineralogical evidence is believed to form an adequate basis for a chemical and physical explanation of the phenomenon. In the present paper the writer will give a brief synopsis of this theory, and will apply it more particularly to deposits of the precious metals, laying special emphasis upon the dependence of such enrichments upon the presence of iron sulphide (as pyrite, etc.) in the primary ore, and upon structural features which control the circulation of the enriching solutions below the water-level. It is believed that many, though not all, of the bonanzas and pay-shoots of rich sulphide ores, especially those carrying gold and silver, which are encountered in ore-deposits, are of such secondary origin. Apparently it is essential that the occurrence and structural relations of such ore-masses should be understood, as the success of the mine is often dependent upon the finding and extraction of these ores. A legitimate deduction, too, is that such ore-deposits decrease in value with depth. As my own studies have been mainly in Montana, my illustrations must be drawn from the ore-deposits of this and adjacent States, with such as I have noted in hurried visits elsewhere. Quartz dust is one of the most significant ongoing health concerns in coal mining today. Since the early 1980's, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted numerous studies in underground and surface coal mines to identify the sources of quartz dust and its fundamental characteristics. This report presents data and conclusions obtained from these studies. The two most significant quartz dust sources were found to be the continuous miner excavating rock and the highwall drill operating in a rock overburden. The percentage of quartz was found to be higher in the smaller size fractions of dust when significant amounts of rock were mined by the continuous miner. Another factor theorized to affect quartz dust generation and size characteristics is the morphology of the quartz-bearing rock. Several laboratory studies were conducted to investigate capture efficiency of water spray technology and flooded-bed scrubbers with respect to the particle size of the dust. Water sprays and flooded-bed scrubbers were both found to be less efficient on smaller dust particles, and the scrubber was particularly less efficient on quartz dust. These results indicate that quartz control technology should be directed at controlling smaller sized dust particles.

Since the introduction of the relative permeability concept in the middle thirties1,2 various investigators have shown3,10,11,12,15 how the basic equations for the flow of oil and gas through porous media can he utilized to compute the recovery from depletion type or solution gas drive type reservoirs under certain conditions, when the necessary physical data pertaining to the reservoir rock and its reservoir fluids are known. In the study by Muskat and Taylor" in 1945, the effects of viscosity, gas solubility, shrinkage, and the permeability-saturation characteristics of the producing formation on the production histories and the recovery of gas drive reservoirs were analyzed. Each parameter was varied a limited number of times, while keeping the others constant. The work was not carried to the point where the data could be used directly to estimate the primary recovery in those cases where certain rock and fluid characteristics were known or could be assumed. Since the publication of this classic study, the work by Beal in 194616 and Standing in 1952'" has established general correlations of oil viscosity and shrinkage with gas solubility and oil gravity. In addition. a considerable number of relative permeability relationships for different types of reservoir rocks has been published2,5,13,17,19,20. Also, the burden of the numerical work required in the solutions of the differential equation has. during the last few years, been greatly reduced with the availability of modern electronic computing facilities. The purpose of this paper is therefore to present the results of a large number of such recovery computations covering the normal range of variation of the main parameters such as the type of rock, the API gravity of the oil, and the amount of gas in solution. As is to be expected, the ultimate recovery is found to increase with the oil gravity. except for the higher solution gas-oil ratios. Within the normal range of solubilities, the ultimate recovery generally appears to decrease with the amount of gas in solution for the higher oil gravities, and to show a slight increase for the lower oil gravities. Intermediate oil gravities seem to fall between the two trends. The type of reservoir rock, as identified by its relative permeability relationship, appears to have a very pronounced effect on the ultimate recovery. In general, sands and sandstones show higher recoveries than limestones and dolomites, although certain intergranular limestones seem to show a higher theoretical recovery than unconsolidated sand. The recovery from sands and sandstones generally decreases with increasing cementation and consolidation, while the recoveries from limestones and dolomites are highest for the intergranular type and lowest for the fracture type porosity.

The length of the vertical axis expresses properly the axial ratio of a : c, a being uniformly taken as equal to unity. It is well known that the major fractures and lineaments presently recorded in Western North America are preferentially oriented along a general northwest direction (Figure 1). There are other features, however, more subtle, more elusive as a rule and which can only be inferred, occurring at right angle to this broad NW direction. It is intended a) to examine some of these NE or transverse trends, b) to compare these regional NE breaks to similar ones that transversally cut through the eastern part of the European Tethys, more specifically in Iran and Turkey, and c) to study their potential relationship to mineralization in both areas.

The past 15 years have seen rapid advances in the metallurgy of materials for drill machinery and bits, but rock drilling itself continues to be largely an art. Jet piercing, roller bit rotary drilling, and rotary percussion are all promising new techniques, but the percussion rock drill, still used for 90 pct of the blastholes in U. S. hard-rock mining, has under- gone no major modification since pneumatic machines were first used successfully in the 1860's. This singular lack of progress stems directly from ignorance of the nature of impact failure of rock and the fundamentals of rock penetration in general. For nearly three-quarters of a century, mining engineers did not know what went on at the bottom of a drillhole.

Chondrite-normalized rare earth elements (REEs) profiles and high field strength elements (HFSEs) in rocks and minerals represent important tracers of geological processes. Of these the birdwing-shaped profile with negatively-sloped light REE ((La/Sm)N >1), positively-sloped heavy REE ((Tb/Yb)N <1), and strong negative Eu anomalies is commonly associated with large-scale hydrothermal systems or granitic intrusions. In a different way, severe deviation of Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios from those of chondrite may also indicate hydrothermal signatures in the rocks involved as these ratios are generally stable and chondritic in normal magmatism as a result of their nearly identical ionic radii and charge. In this study, we present a typical setting where birdwing-shaped REE profiles together with Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios unusually higher than those of chondrite, are systematically developed in a series of garnetite, quartzofeldspathic gneiss, Fe- or Mg-rich aluminous gneiss, and sulfides and magnetite. These units and associated Cu-Au mineralization form a VHMS-style hydrothermal system in the granulite-facies 1.4 Ga -1.35 Ga volcano-plutonic, arc-related Bondy gneiss complex (BGC), western Grenville Province, Canada. Outside the recognized hydrothermal system of the BGC, such REE profiles are not observed. Instead the surrounding felsic and mafic gneisses display primary trace element characteristics of island-arc magmas, suggesting that granulitefacies metamorphism did not modify significantly the trace element signatures of the protoliths. Although magmatic fractionation of accessory minerals can produce birdwing-shaped profiles, it cannot explain the extreme fractionation of isovalent trace elements (Nb-Ta) and the high Zr content of the hydrothermal rocks. Neither is it compatible with the lack of significant Nd depletion that would normally incur during this process. Following our study, we demonstrate that F-rich fluid and mineral phases enriched in LREEs and HREEs respectively must have been involved in the main hydrothermal alteration and REE fractionation process in the BGC. Preferential removal of REEs from the interstitial glass of the volcanic protoliths together with dissolution of plagioclase and subsequent external influx of HREEs and HFSEs can produce birdwing-shaped REE profiles. In turn, such profiles and/or unusual Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios can be used as a sensitive marker of hydrothermally altered rocks in targeting mineral exploration.

Since coal has been designated as the short-term answer to the threatening world energy crisis, improved surface mining techniques, along with improved extraction and handling equipment, are needed to increase the amounts that can economically be mined by open pit methods. A dwindling supply of low cost oil and gas have dictated a major rethinking of our energy sources and their use. New methods for open pit coal mining have to be found to increase coal production and to meet more stringent reclamation laws. Modern twin-engine elevating scrapers can play a vital role in meeting these needs. They are readily available, with short delivery times, from several experienced manufacturers of earthmoving equipment. Recent developments of the elevator system have extended its working range to include many of the materials commonly encountered in open pit mining. The paper deals with the advantages of using twin-engine elevating scrapers in the performance of various mining tasks. These tasks range from utility work to the major task of using the scrapers as a primary stripping toot and, of even more importance, a stripping- reclamation tool for, with scrapers, the overburden can be moved and redeposited in the same strata sequence or soil horizon as in its natural state. A recap of current applications of the elevating scraper will be presented, along with proposed uses.

From aluminum to zirconium, the quantitative preponderance of quartz as a gangue material is well recognized. lf this material is to be efficiently removed, its variations must be understood. Variations with temperature are especially important. Too little attention has been given to the thermal polarization of quartz. Under closely controlled conditions, electrostatic upgrading is very reliable. For efficient separation, contact charges must be fostered and charges due to radiation, surface coatings, or thermal polarization avoided. This paper lists thermal transition points of quartz and shows their effect on actual separations. Simple separation tests with all factors except temperature held constant are recommended for determining transition points. With silica making up more than 27% of the earth&apos;s crust, its oxides comprising more than 59% of all igneous rocks, and quartz accounting for most of the main free oxides, the mining engineer is in constant contact with quartz, which may occur as a valuable mineral to be purified or, far more frequently, as a gangue material to be removed as completely and economically as possible. As a means of effecting such purification or removal, dry beneficiation is becoming more and more desirable owing to local water scarcities, wet waste disposal problems, or freezing conditions. One method that has been gaining particularly rapid acceptance is electrostatic beneficiation, or the separation of dry free-flowing materials by means of opposite surface charges, differences in potential, or differences in conductivity. Electrostatic beneficiation dates back to the 1870&apos;s, but only in recent years have newly developed methods and apparatus and a growing knowledge of solid-state physics widened the field for its economical application. Because the term "electrostatic beneficiation" has been rather loosely used in the literature, it has come to include both electrostatic and electrodynamic procedures. Attracting type separators, however, in which oper- ation is based on differences of surface charge or potential, are truly electrostatic, because the separation occurs in a substantially static field set up between oppositely charged surfaces. Separations with this type of equipment may occur at potentials as low as 1000 v and seldom require potentials as high as 30,000 v. In the new contact charge dielectric separators1 the variation in charge is produced by continuous contact and separation of the particles in the moving feed stream and these charges are fostered by the use of non-conducting support and feed surfaces and by handling the feed in the form of streams of appreciable depth. This favors uniformity of feed and allows higher production rates. The distinctive surface charge differences are set up on the separation of the particles according to Coehn&apos;s Law,2 which states that equal and opposite charges are generated on the separation of any two materials in contact and that the substance having the highest dielectric constant will be positively charged. The basic contact charge concept is reliable, but all electrical charges are transient and modified by the electrical conditions of the surroundings. Pyro-electric, photoelectric and radiant effects may modify or totally destroy the contact charges necessary for efficient separation, or contact with conducting surfaces may neutralize them. Such hostile conditions must be carefully guarded against, since they have led to many costly failures in the past. The most consistent difference in surface charges to insure good separation is produced by repeated uniform contact and separation of particles in the moving stream. The thickness of the feed stream possible with this method reduces the effect of contact with the supporting surfaces, but as some contact is inevitable, the best results may be assured by having the dielectric constants of the supporting surfaces between the dielectric constants of the substances to be separated. In general, the hard smooth surface of quartz makes it an ideal substance for electrostatic separation from most minerals. For instance, with calcite, starting with a feed containing 1.9% acid insolubles, one can produce a concentrate containing 0.30% acid insolubles with a tailings containing 21.7% acid insolubles and a yield of 92.8%. The color can be held at 92 or above and the tint at 1.7 or lower. Working with specularite iron ore, laboratory work has given a concentrate of 68.8% Fe., with an iron unit recovery of 96.7%. The USSR, over the last 20 years, has continued to increase its out-put year by year and it is now almost four times what it was at the end of the Second World War. In 1975, it exceeded 700 million tons of run-oi-mine coal (all ranks) which amounts to over 20 percent of world output. This rapid progress has been due to modernization of the industry, by means of increased mechanization and automation and the development of new machines and systems for underground workings and by the expansion of open-pit workings and the development and implementation of larger earthmoving machines.

Two bench scale biochemical reactors (BCRs) were operated over a period of 3 months for the removal of uranium, radium, and selenium from mining influenced water (MIW). A BCR is an anaerobic reactor comprised of organic and inorganic substrate including woodchips, straw, sawdust, and limestone. Uranium and selenium are removed in a BCR by biological reduction of oxidized species (i.e., selenite, selenate) to less soluble forms (Pahler et al. 2007, Blumenstein et al. 2008, Rutkowski et al. 2013). It is believed that radium may be removed through absorption to the biomass in the BCR. The bench scale BCRs were constructed of 6 inch PVC columns with a top to bottom flow configuration. The bench influent water consisted of three different water ratios from two adit seeps. BCR hydraulic retention times of 24 to 36 hours were targeted during the study. Influent concentrations ranged from 19 ug/L to 1.86 mg/L for dissolved uranium, 12 ug/L to 270 ug/L for dissolved selenium, and 4.9 pCi/L to 24 pCi/L for radium 226. The average and maximum dissolved uranium removal was 93.6% and 98.5% respectively, the average and maximum dissolved selenium removal was 93.3% and 98.9% respectively, and the average and maximum radium 226 removal was 89.5% and 100% respectively.

Copper is one of the most widely used metals in industrial processes and is also present in most mining operations. Extraction of copper from solutions often proves difficult due to the presence of complexing agents. ChromatoChem, Inc. has developed a Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) support (HiPAC) for removal and recovery of metals from wastewater. The HiPAC SPE support employs chelating agents covalently coupled to a long linker molecule. Several solutions containing copper and complexing agents were tested including 1) copper and carbonate, pH 9.8, 2) mixed metals and anions with copper and cyanide, pH 11, and 3) copper and the chelating agent EDTA, pH 11. The copper was extracted from solutions one and two at high pH, but the EDTA containing solution needed the pH lowered to make the copper available for capture. In each example, the copper concentration was significantly reduced by HiPAC SPE treatment.

The design and construction of a new 140-ton-per-day R. O. M. phosphate rock scrubbing and washing plant was undertaken by Western Knapp Engineering Company, a Division of Arthur G. McKee and Company, for the J. R. Simplot Company, Minerals and Chemical Division, Pocatello, Idaho. The new plant replaces the owner&apos;s existing facilities at Conda, Idaho, seven miles northeast of Soda Springs in the southeast corner of Idaho. Replacement of the existing facilities became necessary because of loss in production and recovery. These losses were due in part to varying grades of raw ore from the mine and to the type of process equipment used in the old plant to upgrade the ore. Increase In production and grade was further necessary by demands created by expansion of facilities in Pocatello, Idaho, where all process ore from this plant is shipped. The new process scheme includes an ore-feeding system, scrubbing, screening, classification, wet cycloning, attritioning, filtering, drying, storage and shipping facilities. Space was also left for future increases of scrubbing and classification capacity and for heavy media separation. It is the purpose of this paper to take up some of the considerations necessary in the design of small mills in order to achieve the desired objectives of a successful plant, such as production, minimum operating cost and maintenance cost.

The key to the successful use of any tool, more than anything else, depends upon proper application assignment. To achieve this, the individual having such machine responsibility must maintain fresh knowledge of technical improvements that broaden machine uses. 8.3-1. Tractor Shovel. This type machine is available in a wide range of sizes mounted either on crawler tracks or rubber-tired wheels, with both two-wheel and four-wheel drive. The original concept in both crawler and rubber mounting was that of an attachment to be added to a tractor already in existence. This served as an important expedient for the introduction of the tool, but the basic tractor proved to be inadequately designed for the additional loads. In spite of these structural inadequencies, customer acceptance generated sufficient revenue that further development could be financed for product improvement. The evolution of the product is continuing in many ways-including engines, drive line components, tires, hydraulic pumps, hydraulic valves, structural steel, etc. With each improvement, the operating capability of the machine is extended. This is resulting in the rubber-tired, four-wheel-drive concept making an invasion of the job applications that were formerly considered suitable only for crawler-track mounted machines. Both rubber- and crawler-mounted tractor shovels have invaded the market of small excavator shovels. Larger tractor shovels are challenging the larger size excavators. It is important that each job application be carefully considered so that the proper machine is put in operation. The performance varies widely in operating cost, production efficiency, and job flexibility. Factors to be considered in equipment selection are: 1. Nature of material to be moved 3. Distance material must be moved 2. Surface over which material must be moved 4. Quantity to be moved 5. Secondary or alternate use capability

The US Bureau of Mines investigated cold-cutting alternatives to oxyacetylene torch cutting of metal. The alternatives examined were a pneumatic circular saw with an abrasive cutting wheel, a handheld abrasive water-jet cutting tool, an ultrathermic-cutting system, hydraulic punches and cutters, and a pneumatic reciprocating hacksaw. Sparks generated with the pneumatic circular saw or ultrathermic-cutting system were not completely eliminated with the use of water sprays. The water sprays also reduced the cutting rate of the pneumatic circular saw by 70%. The safety and performance of a handheld abrasive water jet cutting system requires additional research. The hydraulic cutters and punches are readily available and do not introduce any hazards. However, they are not comparable in price to the oxyacetylene gas torch and many different attachments would be needed to replace the torch. The pneumatic reciprocating hacksaw, which did not produce any sparks, is an acceptable alternative in terms of cutting rates. However, the price of the saw and blades is not comparable to that of the oxyacetylene gas torch. The results of this study will further the advancement of safe, efficient alternatives to oxyacetylene gas torches, which will improve miner safety.

A cyanidation study was conducted on a mild refractory gold ore sample from the Central zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. Gold, at a grade of 8.00 g/t, is present as native gold, electrum and aurostibite. The ore also contains 2.8 per cent pyrrhotite, together with several antimony minerals (0.8 per cent berthierite and gudmundite, 0.18 per cent native antimony and stibnite). It also exhibits weak preg-robbing properties with 0.16 per cent organic carbon. Aurostibite, a gold antimony compound, is particularly known to be insoluble in cyanide solution. The antimony dissolves in cyanide solution to form antimonates, which retards gold dissolution. Industrial practice of extracting gold from aurostibite generally consists of producing a flotation concentrate, which is leached in a pipe reactor at low alkalinity and high oxygen pressure with about 20 g/L cyanide. The proposed new approach is efficient and allows the extraction of gold directly from an ore at atmospheric pressure and a low cyanide concentration at pH 10.5. The effects of grinding, pretreatment, lead nitrate, kerosene and cyanide concentrations have been investigated. The maximum gold extraction obtained on the ore was 87.9 per cent using 800 ppm NaCN, 500 g/t lead nitrate, 30 g/t kerosene, DO 10 ppm and pH 10.5 in 168 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.3 kg/t. The additions of lead nitrate and kerosene increased gold extraction. In comparison to a P80 of 74 ¦m, a P80 of 30 ¦m significantly increased gold extraction. Gold in solid solution in gudmundite and arsenopyrite was believed to be responsible for the unleached fraction until mineralogical analysis of hydroseparation concentrates of leach residues showed that most of the unleached gold occurs as aurostibite, either as locked grains in sulfides/sulfarsenides or as grains with passivation rims of an Au-Sb-O phase. Coarse gold was also found. Gold extraction was not sensitive to cyanide concentration from 250 ppm to 1200 ppm NaCN and high pH was detrimental. Decreasing the cyanide concentration reduced the cyanide consumption to 0.85 kg/t. The removal of coarse gold using a Knelson concentrator and a Mosley table prior to leaching increased the gold extraction to 90.4 per cent (leach residue at 0.77 g/t).
