By the death of Prof. Pettee the Institute has lost one of its earliest, most distinguished, most useful and most beloved members. Among those who survive him there are few who have rendered services of equal professional value or unselfish devotion. The warrant for this statement will be amply furnished in the present brief notice of his life and work. William Henry Pettee was born, January 13,1838, at Newton Upper Falls, Mass., where hie childhood and youth were spent. His father, Otis Pettee, a manufacturer of cotton cloth and of cotton-mill machinery, died in 1853. Up to that time, the son had been educated mainly in the district school; but, being inclined by temperament and constitution rather to books and study than to physical exertion, he had been wisely rest,rained in mental activity, and required, for a season, to work regularly in the foundry and machine-shop of his father. Unquestionably, this discipline not only benefited his health, but also constituted a valoable preparation for his subsequent professional career. In 1857, after suitable preliminary study at various New England academies, he entered Harvard College, where he took high rank in the classical course then required, was selected in his Junior gear to deliver a Latin oration; was elected a mem-

Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.'s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). Mr. Brown : .That part of the Standard Company's plant which has been added since the publication of Mr. Leggett's paper, and is described in mine, renders the single-phase, alternating system, which Mr. Hale has called " unelastic," much more elastic than it had been. The original plant at Bodie was substantially the same as the Telluride plant mentioned in his paper. The machines came from the same shops, and were practically the same; but while the Telluride Company has changed completely to a polyphase system, the Standard Company has retained its original plant, but has belted on a directcurrent generator at the receiving end, thereby converting the water-power into electricity, electricity into power, the power into electricity, and finally again electricity into power for use in the mines. This is a roundabout course, to be sure, but it shows that there are possibilities even in the out-of-date single-phase system. Extraction of gold and silver from two refractory concentrates using cyanide and bromine reagents was reported at the 12th International Precious Metal Conference (1). The objective of this paper is to present the gold extraction, recovery, and economics for two refractory concentrates using cyanide and bromine reagents. Gold extractions for cyanide leaching (24- 48 hours) and bromine leaching (6 hours) were the same and ranged from 94% to 96%. Gold recoveries from bromine pregnant solutions using carbon adsorption, ion exchange, solvent extraction, and zinc and aluminum precipitation methods, were better than 99.9%. A preliminary economic analysis indicates that chemical costs? for cyanidation and bromine process are $9.50 and $10.50, respectively per ton of calcine processed.

The management of waste materials in the aluminum industry is as important as in other basic industries. Due to the high value of the-by products of the melting process and their toxic properties we took the challenge to develop a process technology to reduce the environmental impact and to help industry to get a better yield of their by products/raw materials. In melting operations metal losses due to oxidation are nearly unavoidable, the amount of such losses, however, can be controlled. Aluminum dross actually is a by product and any shop would like to get rid of it in the most economic way. This by product still contains up to 70% valuable metal! In the present work we describe possibilities to separate metal and residues for further processing. Recycling of metal concentrates, selling of dross and dumping of the residues have been the typical solutions up to now. But there are technologies available which are designed to reduce the waste to a minimum or even avoid it altogether. Such alternatives are processing of the dross into materials which can be reused in other industrial processes in order to avoid any dumping. This can be done by separating the metal and the residues by centrifuging and further use of the residues in the chemical or refractory industry. ECOCENT means economical and ecological recovery of aluminum by centrifuging of hot dross. This process, developed by FOCON Austria, is based on the idea of treating the hot dross as quick as possible in a single operation to avoid exothermic losses, intermediate storage and unnecessary handling as well as to save energy. In the ECOCENT process the hot dross is fed without any fluxing salt additions into a converter where the relevant parameters for separation, like temperature and viscosity, will be adjusted. Further big lumps of dross are ground into smaller pieces in order to improve the later separation of the metal. After homogenizing and adjusting the temperature, the hot dross is poured as quickly as possible into a centrifuge. In the ladle or alternatively the mould of the centrifuge the centrifugal forces are used for the separation of aluminum from aluminum oxide, the major constituents of dross. The separated pure metal can either be discharged liquid or as solidified aluminum ring. The design of the device for the production of liquid or solid metal is almost identical. As soon as the centrifuging is finished the liquid aluminum can be poured back into the furnace or can be used for ingot pouring. After the pouring of the metal the "dry" residues are removed just by turning the ladle. Alternatively the aluminum solidifies in the mould and is discharged as a compact ring. The separation of the residues from the aluminum ring is automatic. Due to the batchwise operation the composition of the metal is the same as in the skimmed furnace of origin. The complete treatment cycle needs about 40 minutes. The recovery rate of aluminum is better than 90% of pure metal. This technology is highly flexible by its nature and can easily accomodate various operational requirements. The consumption of energy is more than 50% lower compared to conventional dross processing as the ECOCENT process is using the inherent energy of the hot dross. These extremely good results are not dependent on the aluminum content of the dross even from very dry dross most of the metal can be recovered. The main advantages compared to conventional dross processing are the high recovery rate, the known analysis of the metal and the immediate reuse of the recovered aluminum. The high recovery rate and the pure metal result in a short amortization period. The compact ECOCENT unit needs a minimum of space since extensive handling can be avoided. The electronically controlled process needs no cooling water and is simple, safe and environmentally sound. The residues are free of fluxing salts, their content of metallic aluminum is low and the environmental problems are thus greatly reduced.

Among the many compositional parameters used to judge the quality of a steam coal is the fouling factor of Attig and Duzy1 [% base in ash % acid in ash X % Na20] in ash. The higher the fouling factor, the more likely the heat transfer surfaces of the boiler will acquire a deleterious deposit of sintered ash. While examining the elemental composition of ash from various size and gravity fractions of coals from Illinois, we noticed that variations in the fouling factor were attributable mostly to variations in the sodium content. Further, sodium content was essentially the same in all sink-float fractions from a given coal. In other words, sodium was related neither to the ash nor to the organic material. We therefore concluded that the sodium was most likely in the pore water, which was approximately a constant proportion of all fractions. This led to the supposition that the sodium might be removable through water extraction. This supposition tended to confirm the observations of Daybell,2 Daybell and Gillham,3 and Gluskoter and Ruch4 that much of the sodium in coals existed as water soluble sodium ions. In passing, it should be noted that most sodium in Western U.S. coals (i.e., Wyoming, North Dakota, Montana) is not water soluble, but rather is fairly strongly held in association with the organic material (ion-exchanged).5 Because data reported in the literature were not very conclusive about the typical proportions of sodium that might be removed by water extraction, and because there were few data indicating extraction rates, and finally, because our calculations showed a favorable economic incentive to lower sodium contents, we initiated an experimental program to investigate water extraction of sodium from Illinois coals.

RESULTS presented in a previous paper1 have shown that the strength of fired pellets made from eastern Mesabi magnetite concentrates containing 8 to 9 pct Si02 as quartz and silicates is due to several processes which occur during firing. These are: l-recrystallization and cementation of the fragmented magnetite grains; 2-formation of slag from reaction between the quartz, silicates, and available ferrous iron, followed by slag-bonding of the magnetite grains; and 3-oxidation of the magnetite to hematite and subsequent recrystallization and grain growth of this constituent. Microscopic examination of all magnetite pellets fired in one operation in small and large-scale pilot plant furnaces and possessing normal strengths shows that the processes 1,2, and 3 have taken place; where strengths are low and the pellets are otherwise sub- normal, one or more of the processes has not occurred. For example, soft and friable red pellets may contain a central core of slag-bonded recrystallized magnetite which is strong enough in itself, but the shell contains only slightly recrystallized hematite, indicating that the maximum temperature reached was too low. Processes 1 and 2 can occur only under reducing conditions, as for example, when coal is intention- ally added to the original pellets; under neutral conditions, when pellets are fired in an inert atmosphere; or when pellets are brought so rapidly to temperature in an oxidizing atmosphere that oxygen diffusion to the core lags behind the recrystallization and slagging effects. The complex mineralogy of the Porgera resource has a pronounced effect on process selection for the recovery of refractory gold and silver. Intimate association of gold with pyrite necessitates a high degree of sulphur preoxidation to achieve acceptable levels of gold recovery. Acid pressure oxidation has been demonstrated to be the only commercially proven process capable of achieving the required level of pyrite oxidation. Gangue mineralization dictates preconcentration of the sulphides to limit the acid consuming capacity and carbon dioxide generation during oxidation. However, the relationship between concentrate sulphur grade and gold recovery to concentrate ultimately governs the optimum degree of sulphide preconcentration. Minipiloting of the preconcentration and oxidation stages of the Porgera flowsheet are described. The influence of these processes on subsequent recovery of precious metals together with the technical and economic necessity of concentrate pretreatment prior to oxidation are discussed.

A.C. Noble presents a clear and concise summary of the factors pertinent to a competent reserve evaluation of a mineral occurrence. However, I believe that he confuses the difference between a resource and a reserve. By definition, a reserve estimate includes all known economic, legal, mining, metallurgical and environmental factors impacting the recovery of the product(s) found in the deposit. A resource estimate, however, is an estimate of what is there - what is available for exploitation and should not include economic and other considerations. Only after defining the resource, its extent, location, physical and chemical properties, can an intelligent selection process begin of the extraction and processing technologies most appropriate to the circumstances encountered. The early and almost certainly inappropriate application of these often cookbook choices has probably lead many companies to walk away from good properties. (How many mines have been found in others rejects?) An example of the process is the early selection of metallurgical samples, after encouraging values are found in a few holes or surface samples, in an attempt to determine the economics of the prospect. Unfortunately, the sampler does not know how representative of the occurrence the sample is because he does not know what the deposit looks like. As a consequence, the property becomes saddled with a bad metallurgical sample that is often inappropriately used in evaluating the deposit which it does not represent.

The southeastern region of the United States is becoming more important as a petroleum-producing area, and it is receiving increasing attention from oil operators. In 1948 total production of crude oil from six southeastern States - Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Virginia - was 55,244,000 barrels, which represents 2.7 percent of the Nation's output during that year. Kentucky and Tennessee have produced crude oil since the early days of the industry, but the remaining four States have had production only few years. Data on annual production of crude petroleum in the six States are given in table 1.

To reduce operator exposure to noise from vibrating screens at coal preparation plants. Background Hearing loss is one of the most common occupational illnesses in the United States. In the U.S. mining industry, hearing loss is 2.5 to 3 times greater than what is expected for the average population that is not exposed to occupational noise. Furthermore, studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed that by age 50, 90% of coal miners have a hearing impairment versus only 10% of the population that is not exposed to occupational noise. A NIOSH cross-sectional survey of coal preparation plants showed that 43.5% of employees were overexposed to noise. The study also found that vibrating screens were one of the top five loudest types of equipment at these plants?as well as the most numerous?making them a key noise source to address.

Roots of many hydroponically grown terrestrial plants, including sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) effectively remove toxic metals such as Cu+2, Cd+2, Cr+6, Ni+2, Pb+2 and Zn+2 2 from aqueous solutions. It should be possible to scale up this process such that plant roots can be used to treat large volume aqueous waste streams. It can be extrapolated from laboratory results that to reduce the Cd concentration in a waste stream, from 1 ppm to below 4 ppb, with a flow rate of 4000 L/min, would require 3500 sq. m of plant roots with a density 5 kg fresh weight per sq. m. These results suggest that the roots of hydroponically grown terrestrial plants may provide an attractive alternative to the accepted water treatment technologies.

It is generally recognized that geologic input is required for the results of a geostatistical study to be meaningful. However the link between geology and geostatistics is often complex and not well understood. A geostatistical evaluation can be divided into four phases: Background discussions, computation, reserve reporting and reserve audit. Each one of these phases is described, as well as the role the geologist should play during their completion. This role will vary depending on the geology of the deposit being studied, the geostatistical method chosen and the computer hardware and software being used. The geologist's acceptance of the results is needed if the geostatistical model is to have any credibility. The most significant obstacle to a meaningful study comes from the difficulties geologists and geostatisticians often encounter when attempting to communicate with each other.

"Sensor based sorting faces two main challenges related to limited capacity/throughput and the ability of sensors to accurately discriminate based on estimated grades. This paper is aimed at improving sensor discrimination. Sensors have the ability to measure more than a single response. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) can detect and provide concentration information about a range of elements. Similarly, electromagnetic sensors (EMs) can generate magnetic susceptibility and conductivity responses over a range of frequency levels. The sensors thereby provide a response signature rather than a simply a single response that is a proxy for a metal grade. Furthermore, integrating sensor responses can improve the discrimination of metal bearing rock from waste. A study was conducted on a gold ore to assess sortability using XRF and EM sensors. A multi-variable regression approach was used to develop models that included a range of responses. Correlations improved significantly when compared to single response correlations. The approach showed that both positive and negative correlations contributed to the improved correlations. Stepwise regression simplified the models and showed that 2nd order interaction effects can be important. The approach also showed that combining different responses can improve discrimination accuracy. An important outcome of the study was that an ore that had been consider not to be sortable was determined to be sortable through the application of an approach that used the sensor responses in a more intelligent manner.INTRODUCTIONMining is aimed at recovering valuable minerals from their host rocks. Many methods are used to recover valuable minerals, and finding efficient and cost-effective ways is the key in research and production. . Ore sorting technology is fitting this definition. It not only discards waste rocks away from the concentrator but also recovers metal bearing ore particles that could be lost to the waste dump. The benefits of ore sorting include increased energy efficiency and reduced water and reagent usage in the downstream operations (Bamber, 2008; Gunson, Klein, Veiga, & Dunbar, 2012; Mazhary & Klein, 2015; Robben, Wotruba, Robben, von Ketelhodt, & Kowalzcyk, 2013)."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted benchmarking surveys at longwall operations across the country to identify current operating practices and the types of controls being used. Gravimetric and instantaneous dust sampling was completed to quantify dust generation from major sources and determine the relative effectiveness of the different control technologies. Results from the underground dust surveys will be presented as an update on longwall dust control technology and operating practices.

THE production of isotropic fine-grained ingot iron would be most useful since physical measurements associated with the elastic properties of iron are influenced by the size and orientation of the individual grains. This can be accomplished at present for small samples by established metallurgical procedures, but for large samples (in excess of 2 in. diam by 1 in. thick) it is virtually impossible to produce reasonably small uniform grains with random orientation. Such pieces can, however, be produced by impulsive loading followed by a suitable recrystallization treatment. The shock loading system employed is diagrammed in Fig. l. Here the 3/8-in. iron plate is accelerated by the plane-wave initiated high explosive charge through a 1 5/8-in. air space. Collision of this plate and the specimen of interest generates a shock wave in excess of 300 kbars which passes through the specimen. For this type of work it is not necessary to use machined parts: for example, the ingot iron pieces are saw cut from the billet so that they can be inserted in short sections of iron pipe. The recovered specimens are less distorted, however, if the air gap between the iron sample and pipe is filled with Woods metal. "Water and cyanide are highly contentious and conflict issues that many gold mining companies encounter worldwide when dealing with local farming communities, industries and cities competing for water as well as non-government and government organizations. Historically, the gold industry has used processes that required minimum amounts of water to treat and recover gold at locations around the world. Examples are dry grinding for refractory gold treatment in the late 1800s and early 1900s and dry blowing in arid/desert regions to recover alluvial gold. In recent times, new dry processing equipment has been developed and include equipment such as air tables and jigs. Researchers have also modified a Knelson concentrator to concentrate gold from dry solids. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) with air classifiers are used to treat industrial minerals and pilot trials have shown that the technology can be applied to comminute refractory gold ores ahead of roasting. Dry stacked tailings is being applied on gold mines to reduce overall water consumption This paper will review the available technologies that in combination may be able to substantially reduce the quantity of water used in the processing of gold ores.INTRODUCTION Water makes up most of the world: the planet is 75% water. Some 97.5% is saline water largely in the oceans, so that only 2.5% is fresh water and useful for human needs. The demand for water is driven primarily by population and concomitant economic growth. Overall, some 70% of the water withdrawn from the environment is used in agriculture, 20% by industry, 7% by households and 3% for mining (Brown, 2003: Maupin et al., 2010). Whilst the water needs of the mining industry are minor compared to those of agriculture, an operating mine requires a relatively large quantity of water on a daily basis to carry out operations. Mining activities are often located in remote, arid environments, with limited access to water. There are a multitude of water resources available to the mining industry for its needs. However, much of this water is saline and over the last two decades there has been a continual decline in water quality (i.e. salinity has increased). In today‘s world, there are enormous internal and external pressures to reduce water consumption at a mine, and/or alternatively use water not considered a resource by the local community. Strategies to meet these objectives can be achieved by implementing good water management practices, by recycling process water, reducing water losses by evaporation and seepage (i.e. by increasing and improving dewatering practices) and employing new technologies such as dry stacking and dry processing (Dunne, 2010)."
