In the extractive industry the term ‘continuous improvement’ (CI) usually means procurement of the latest state of the art equipment. This is generally perceived as the only way to add further value to the supply chain, with the driving philosophy of increased tonnage to dilute operational costs. However, not all market places can facilitate this approach. RJB lives in a fiercely competitive market and has targeted the standard efficiency drivers of rationalisation and stock management with a vengeance; and also operate CMMS (Computer Maintenance Management System), RCM (Routine Condition Monitoring)and CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) methodologies. Ultimately though, these systems are only as good as the people who operate and manage them and to add further value without procurement, people must be re-introduced back into the operation. Through TPM (Total Productive Mining), that is what RJB have set out to do.

The development of a water accounting framework that enables consistent and contextual reporting of minerals operationsÆ water use, represents a key sustainable development objective that many Australian minerals companies have committed to. A future water accounting framework will require: key terms and definitions for water metrics for use in the Australian minerals industry that are consistent with the wider water sector, a suite of metrics representing key components of an operationÆs water balance, a calculation method for some of the metrics, and a reporting protocol. This paper presents the methodology that was used to derive these four components. Existing accounting frameworks were reviewed and key terms and definitions that were consistent with current regulatory requirements and voluntary approaches were proposed. A calculation methodology was developed to obtain some of the key indicators and variables that cannot be easily measured directly (eg water loss through evaporation). The adopted terms and definitions typically require a combination of empirical and estimated data. To test the proposed definitions and calculation methodology, values for water metrics were derived for eight sites, selected to test a variety of commodity and biophysical situations. The proposed framework and definitions could deal with the specific situations selected as case studies. The associated calculation methodology produced complete accounts at various levels. Some elements of the accounts could be directly checked against available data and simulations. The framework captured well variations in the reuse efficiencies; reuse efficiency could even vary for similar processes. It is concluded that this preliminary accounting framework provides a consistent language and metrics for quantifying and communicating water management, both at the intersection of the site with the surrounding landscape (through detailed reporting of site inputs and outputs) and within operational activities. Using this consistent framework for quantifying and documenting water use within an operation will provide a platform for compiling and comparing minerals industry water use with other sectors. This may support benchmarking activities within regions or companies and help demonstrate leadership amongst water users in water resource stewardship. The approach presented here is applicable to a wide variety of mining and processing activities, and biophysical environments, and following a period of stakeholder engagement and third party review, is being refined as a first step towards developing nationally consistent water use reporting for the Australian minerals industry.

Florida Power and Light is the fifth largest investor-owned electric utility in the country. It has a service territory that covers 35 counties, or 28,000 square miles, 2.5 million customers, and serves 5.6 million people. The total installed capacity is 13,470 MW, generated by four nuclear units, 36 oil and/or gas fired units, and 48 gas turbine units. Traditionally, FPL has been an oil-based utility. In 1979, this dependency on oil became obvious when 42 million barrels of oil were burned during the year. At that time, it was also projected that, based on the current estimates of customer growth and available generation capacity through 1990, FPL's residual fuel oil consumption would increase from the 1979 level of 42 million barrels (6.7 million m3) per year to approximately 55 million barrels (8.7 million m3) per year by the mid-1990's. Concern over this was further aggravated by the fact that it was difficult to estimate both the price and quantity of fuel oil that would be available over the next decade since changes in the world market, decisions by oil producers and refiners, and international political developments would all affect the availability of oil. Also, at that time, the price of residual fuel oil had increased drastically, and there was no reason to think that these prices would soon stabilize. Thus, oil back-out became a primary objective of FPL and since then, FPL has been actively investigating ways to decrease fuel oil consumption.

Despite technological improvements and better understanding of the hazards, coal dust explosions stilI occur. Experimental explosions in galleries in various countries extend knowledge with the constant aim of providing safer working conditions. The inadvertent ignition of an accumulation of methane is the traditional initiator of the coal dust explosion.There are specific parameters of coal dust explosibility and explosion propagation, including the important volatile matter in the coal, fineness and dispersibility of the dust and its concentration. Accepting that initiation cannot be absolutely prevented, it is necessary to consider explosion suppression. While both limestone dust and water are the chosen explosion suppressants, in practice water has more limitations to its efficacy when related to the degree of explosion violence. These data give rise to the criteria for explosion suppression, differences in favoured mining geometries, and using the same principles, to differences in suppression treatments.

The definition of precipitation-hardening1 is well understood and its principles have been subjected to study for some time. However, the variation of properties with double aging, combined with strain-hardening, gives promise of new and useful phenomena. Properly to understand these distinctions, definitions of these terms are necessary. Precipitation-hardening1.—This reaction usually depends upon an alloy having such a composition that it consists only, or in major part, of but one phase, a solid solution, at a high temperature, so that, upon slow cooling, this solution breaks down into two phases, the solid solution and a compound. By heating the alloy to the temperature for maximum solution of the compound, quenching, and reheating to a suitable lower temperature for critical dispersion precipitation of the compound, useful properties of the alloy may be developed to a maximum. Double Aging.—Dougle aging in part is similar to the process for precipitation-hardening, consisting of heating a precipitation-hardening alloy to the solution temperature, quenching, reheating to the suitable dispersion precipitation temperature, strain-hardening, and again reheating to a suitable temperature to develop certain useful properties to a maximum. The strain-hardening may be induced by two methods: (I) a rate of cooling from the first reheat may suffice to strain the solid solution lattice of the alloy; or (2) the alloy may be cold-worked to a suitable degree between the two reheats. Pkecipitation-hardening of Copper-cobalt-beryllium Alloys1.2 The composition of principal interest is that of 2.6 per cent Co, 0.4 per cent Be, 97 per cent Cu. Completion of the H-3 Highway Tunnel Project was a critical element in opening this award winning project. The exploratory tunnel was completed as a maintenance tunnel and included difficult shafts extending into the main tunnel cross passages. The project also involved a major addition to the traffic operations center including a deep excavation in close proximity to the tunnel portal structures. The projects also included various completions and improvements to the main tunnels, such as paving, drainage, maintenance, and a variety of critical life-safety issues, such as radio systems, telephones, etc. The highway opened in December 1997.

Rio Tinto is committed to proactive mineral waste and acid rock drainage management. Corporate requirements are closely aligned with the GARD Guide principles of early geochemical characterization and prediction followed by selection and implementation of management strategies to prevent or minimize ARD. Each operation is required to design and implement an ARD and Mineral Waste Management Plan. Successful implementation of the plan requires commitment at all levels of the company, from senior management, to geologists, mine planners, environmental staff and equipment operators. Examples of the successful integration of ARD management strategies into mine operations are cited from several mines.

"Enormous deposits of gypsum of exceptionally high grade are readily accessible in southwestern Newfoundland. Coming large-scale production from one of these is resulting in renewed interest in deposits which have been known for more than a hundred and twenty years. General stratigraphy and structure of the Carboniferous rocks in which the gypsum occurs are de-scribed. The stratigraphic position of the basal gypsum-anhydrite zone is described. This massive evaporite horizon, which reaches a thickness of about 1,0001 feet, appears at Fishels-Heatherton, where it is largely undeveloped, and again on the nose of an anticline east of Flat bay, where a present production of 20,000 to 40,000 tons per annum is soon to be expanded to make it one of Canada's major producers. Detailed descriptions are given of the several types of gypsum, the relation of the gypsum and anhydrite, and the distribution of sodium chloride in the evaporite beds, and the bearing of all these on the origin of the gypsum are discussed. Brief reference is made to relation to world markets, mining and transportation, grade, and reserves."

This paper summarizes fly rock and blast area security fatalities from 1989 to 1999 and examines the causative factors. Coal and nonmetal mining used about 43 billion pounds of explosives and blasting agents between1989 to 1999. A majority of this consumption was used at surface mines. Accident data indicates that fly rock and lack of blast area security were the primary causes of blasting related injuries in surface mining. Fatal injuries due to lack of blast area security were attributed to: failure to clear blast area; failure to follow instructions; inadequate guarding; inadequate blasting shelter; and unsafe location. Seven fatalities due to fly rock and lack of blast area security were reported in surface coal mines and six in nonmetal mines. Out of these, two fatalities (one each in coal and nonmetal mines) occurred outside the mine property. In the coal mining sector, two fatalities were attributed to fly rock, and five to lack of blast area security. In the nonmetal mining sector, three fatalities were attributed to fly rock, and three to lack of blast area security. Preventive measures include: ensuring that all personnel have evacuated the blast area during shot firing; using adequate blasting shelters for employees whose presence is required in the blast area; controlling and monitoring all entrances to the blast area; ensuring that the blast is properly designed, drilled, and loaded; and emphasizing education and training to enhance skill levels for implementation of engineering control techniques.

During the last twenty years, the company has been interested in developing a gold mine, the Duport Project, on Stevens Island in Shoal Lake . The lake straddles the border between Ontario and Manitoba and is a drinking water supply for Winnipeg and environs.The Duport Project involves the mining of 450 t/day grading an average of 0.35 oz Ault of ore . At the minesite, located on Steven s Island in Shoal Lake, only preliminary processing of the ore will take place, to produce gravity and flotation concentrates for final gold recover y at a mainland plant well removed from the Shoal Lake watershed. No hazardous chemicals will be used at the island site."

The mine is located on Highway 117 connecting Val d'Or to Montreal and very close to the main railway networkHistoryFive successive exploration attempts by Aur Resources resulted in the discovery of the large Louvicourt orebody in June 1989. Construction of the surface and underground infrastructures commenced in the spring of 1991. Milling operations commenced in July 1994. The entire project cost CDN$290 million, almost CDN$20 million less than initially estimated. The concentrator infrastructure cost CDN$64 million.Louvicourt mine is owned in partnership by Novicourt Inc. (45%), Teck Corporation (25%), and Aur Resources Inc., the administrator (30%).Brief DescriptionLouvicourt mine is the largest producer of base metals (Cu and Zn) in Abitibi-Temiscamingue. Its average daily production is nearly 4300 t of ore, for an annual production of 200 000 t of copper concentrate (28% Cu) and 33 000 t of zinc concentrate (57% Zn). After only a few weeks of operation, it had attained its objectives for the most part, and operations continue to be improved."

INTEREST is currently being directed toward grain boundary morphologies in zinc in terms of grain boundary facetingl and grain boundary energies.' The interfacial free energy of the high angle grain boundary and of the stacking fault is assumed to be thermodynamically equivalent to the corresponding in-terfacial tensions. In terms of the true dihedral angles & between the intersecting interfaces, the equilibrium of interfacial tensions in the direction parallel to the stacking fault yields: ysF = -ygb(cos F1+ cos ±cosF2) Here, ysF is the stacking fault free energy and ygb is the grain boundary free energy, assumed equal on both sides of the intersection. Forces acting normal to the grain boundary, of the form ??gb/?F,l are assumed negligible as the grain boundary remains straight for a considerable distance on either side of the intersection. NFPA 502, Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges and Other Limited Access Highways establishes minimum fire protection and fire life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and other roadways where access by emergency responders is physically limited. The 2008 edition of NFPA 502 represents the Technical Committee?s consensus of current best practice for fire protection and life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and similarly limited access highways. Research of national and international test programs, design guidelines and regulating standards was per-formed and considered in an effort to establish a singular, comprehensive document representing a recognized base threshold of fire safety in these type facilities. This paper provides an overview of the more significant revisions including the application of fixed fire suppression systems, guidance on tenable environment, protection of structure and dangerous goods transport.

"2.1. General Considerations and Properties2.1.1. IntroductionOur present knowledge of the platinum-group elements (POE) is extensive, the reason being two-fold. The elements have many uses and, moreover, they exhibit extremely varied chemical behaviour, depending on their state of oxidation and chemical environment. The present chapter reviews a selected body of material which is of particular relevance to mineralogy and geochemistry.Comprehensive treatises on the POE include those by Mellor (1956-1957), Gmelin (1938-1957) and Pascal (1958). The inorganic chemistry, particularly coordination chemistry, has been dealt with in works by Griffith (1967), Hartley (1973) and Livingstone (1975), and the analytical chemistry by Walsh and Hausman (1963), Beamish (1966) and Beamish and Van Loon (1972, 1977). Darling (1973) and Savitsky (1978) have reviewed the metallurgical properties and applications of the metals. Goldberg and Helper (1968) have reviewed the thermochemistry and oxidation potentials of POE systems, and Wagman et at. (1969) have also provided selected values of their thermodynamic properties. The geochemistry of the POE has been reviewed by Yushko-Zakharova et at. (1967), Cousins (1973), Cabri (1974), and Naldrett and Duke (1980).Platinum was used briefly as a coinage metal in ImperialRussia. Otherwise, the principal early use for platinum and its alloys was in the fabrication of chemically resistant apparatus. Subsequently, a large part of platinum production was utilized for catalysts in the sulphuric acid and ammonia industries. Platinum has been replaced by vanadium pentoxide in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, but, in recent times, catalytic upgrading of petroleum and emission control systems for automobiles have opened further huge markets for the metal. All of the POE find uses either as reagents or catalysts in the synthesis of organic compounds, e.g., in the Wacker process, which uses palladium chloride to catalyze the production of acetaldehyde from ethylene. There are, of course, a large number of specialized uses for the elements, particularly in alloys, temperature measurement devices, cancer therapy and so on."

The current financial climate has given rise to fears that falling mineral prices and tight credit will force mining companies to cut back on production and new project development in a bid to cut costs and conserve cash. However, a prolonged squeeze on global supply can have only one result: a massive and potentially explosive demand for metals in the not-too-distant future. A resurgent global economy will also generate dramatic new demand for oil and energy, with a return to higher oil prices likely. How then should the mining industry plan for the future? In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) could lead the way as a partial or complete substitute for trucks. In 13 of 15 studies undertaken by Sandvik and Snowden, comparing IPCC with truck-optimised pit designs, IPCC generated operating savings ranging from US$0.18 to US$0.82 per tonne moved, compared to trucks. Trucks have higher operating, maintenance and energy costs than conveyors. New emission standards on diesel engines may make them more emission friendly but less efficient in terms of energy usage. With far more efficient energy use and cheaper operating costs per tonne moved than trucks, conveying offers an attractive alternative for the bad times ahead and into the apparent energy depleted future. When evaluating alternatives, a reasonable first step would be to conduct a scoping level study which analyses the differences in capital and operating costs between a truck and shovel operation and an IPCC solution. The study can also determine what type of IPCC is best suited to the particular mining application. The results can then be used to decide whether a more detailed study is justifiable. IPCC is a proven process that, with a fresh mindset, can make a significant improvement to mining operations. Sandvik (as an OEM with a full suite of IPCC equipment) can undertake these studies in ten working days in conjunction with Snowden or any other independent mine planner who knows how to schedule for IPCC. Because most mining industry personnel have been æborn and bredÆ on trucks and shovels û this paper focuses on some of the practical considerations necessary to make IPCC systems work that the Sandvik Technical Services Group has encountered during these studies.

The practical application of a post-processing modeling procedure to simulate progressive rock failure around the periphery of coal mine entries is presented. This numerical scheme utilizes a simple rock model that incorporates easily obtainable input parameters consistent with basic rock mechanics principles. These parameters include the cohesion, angle of internal friction, modulus of elasticity, and Poisson's ratio of the bedded deposits that comprise the imediate roof, coal seam, and immediate floor. The geometry of the entry, along with the in situ stresses existing at a mine site prior to mining, are also considered in the analysis. The potential of this procedure as a predictive tool in determining the extent of pillar rib fracturing and yielding of the immediate roof and floor is evaluated assuming a Mohr- Coulomb failure criterion. The procedure is designed to be user oriented and is adaptable to any finite element code with linear elastic capability, making it particularly attractive to users with limited budgets and computer size.

THE terms surface tension .and surface energy are well known when applied to liquids and are generally described by referring to the excess energy of the air: liquid interface as a result of unsaturated molecular forces surrounding the surface molecules of the liquid due to the presence of the air phase on one side. Such unbalanced forces produce the familiar water droplet of spherical form and are generally summed up as a surface tension measured in dynes per centimeter which can be shown mathematically to be equal numerically to a corresponding surface energy expressed in ergs per square centimeter. A specific surface energy, however, is best thought of as the energy necessary to produce one unit of new surface on a substance. Hence, in producing a bubble in a flotation cell the impeller must supply surface energy corresponding to the air: liquid interfacial area on the interior of the bubble. Inasmuch as it is relatively easy to extend or contract the surface of a liquid, there are a number of successful methods for liquid surface tension, or energy, measurement based upon surface deformation. This happy state of affairs does not, however, extend to solids, which are considered to possess surface energies for the same reasons as do liquids, i.e. because of unsaturated ionic bonds at the solid gas interface. As in the case of the flotation cell producing surface on liquids as new bubbles, it takes energy to produce new surface on solids as new particles. As every mill man knows, this surface is produced on mineral solids in a grinding mill by the action of a tumbling mass of iron balls. But here so much energy usually is wasted by the inefficient action of these balls that a large amount of heat is generated, and the surface energy production may be easily confused with the energy necessary to produce this ineffective heat. The tumbling balls and fracturing minerals ultimately take their energy from a rather large electric motor. It has been variously estimated that from 10 to 20 pct" only of this energy from the motor does not appear as heat and may be presumed to appear as surface energy on the minerals present.. Such a production of new surface on the mineral phases is accompanied, of course, by a size reduction that is inevitable as more and more mineral interior molecules become surface molecules by the fracture exposure. This size reduction of mineral particles, although the most obvious feature and perhaps the sole object of the milling operation, is from this energy viewpoint the outward manifestation of the production of surface energy only. Measurement of the characteristic surface energies of pure minerals and their various mixtures in ores would be a step towards understanding of the energetics of the commercial grinding operation. In addition, the characteristic surface energy of a mineral is probably a physical property specific for that mineral, and therefore, from a scientific standpoint, should be measured. It is interesting to note that, in contrast to the large body of work on the surface tensions of liquid systems and biological systems, the field of solid surface energies has been neglected. Prior to. 1920 it is difficult to find more than one or two references to work on solid surface energies in Chemical Abstracts. Since 1920 such references number somewhat less than 100, while those on liquid systems are numbered in the thousands. Much of this apparent neglect of the field of solid surface energies (the term is intended to be somewhat inclusive at this point and refers both to the solid: gas, and the solid: liquid interface) is because of the lack of a reliable method of measurement rather than any lack of scientific curiosity. It was, and still is, difficult to produce new surface on a solid without the simultaneous production of interior changes in the same solid which may consume part of the energy used.
