"The Star Lake Mill was commissioned by Cameco (formerly Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation) in 1986 to process a small high grade gold deposit in a remote location of Northern Saskatchewan. The lean approach to the 200 t. p. d. CIP mill to minimize capital and operating costs employs a number of unique features which are described along with highlights from the initial two years of operation.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe Star Lake Mine is located 520 kilometers north of the City of Saskatoon (Fig. l) with the nearest population centre in La Ronge 130 km to the south. Gold showings were first discovered in the area in the 1940's with the Star Lake ""21 Zone"" ore body discovered in 1983. The Star Lake Mine started operations in 1986 becoming the first primary gold producer in Saskatchewan in over 40 years. The mine is operated by Cameco (formerly SMOC) with 50\ ownership in a joint venture with starrex Mining Corporation (35\) and Uranerz Exploration and Mining (15%).The limited reserves coupled with the remote location and the price of gold ($300-$350 u.s./oz) at the time the project feasibility was being assessed required a lean approach to make the short term operation successful. This paper describes the approach taken in the design and construction of the Star Lake Mill and describes the mill operation with highlights of the initial two years of operation."

The disposal of end-of-life electronics is an issue receiving increasing scrutiny. This paper evaluates several alternatives for recycling cathode ray tubes (CRTs) within monitors and televisions. The primary recycling options for the glass, reuse in new CRTs or as a smelter flux, are examined from economic and environmental standpoints. The economics are modeled using a cost model that includes dependencies on processing costs, transportation logistics, and incoming material composition. The environmental consequences are modeled using life cycle assessment methodologies to determine the energy embodied in each processing alternative. Results map out preferred processing alternatives across a range of technological and operational conditions. The results indicate that economic costs and environmental consequences are heavily impacted by transportation. The preferred destination of CRT glass for a recycler is highly dependent on the proximity of the consumer to the recycler, although it is generally economically advantageous for the recycler to extensively dismantle the CRTs.

The size and complexity of modern surface haulage trucks has resulted in an increased reliance upon sensors and electronic-based instrumentation for safe and efficient operation. Design engineers need accurate information about the equipment vibration environment to efficiently and effectively build components for installation on mobile mining equipment capable of withstanding the mine environment. Examples of such components include backup alarms, communication equipment, microprocessor-based controllers, and a wide variety of sensors. Unfortunately, this information is not available to the majority of both original equipment and aftermarket equipment manufacturers. To address this problem, the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed field vibration measurements on a variety of surface mining haulage trucks. The vibration measurements were then analyzed and test specifications were developed in the form of envelopes. In conjunction with test specifications, recommendations to aid manufacturers in implementing a vibration environment test program have been included with an illustrative example.

Aim of the present work is to continue the theoretical evaluation of the slags of the fundamental system CaO-SiO2-CrOx-MgO (Ca-O-Cr-Si-Mg quinary system) at the temperature of 1,873 [K], with the help of a computational thermodynamic tool. Driving force for this and the previous research works is the understanding of chromium losses from the molten bath into the slag. Especially motivating is the presence of solid phases in the slag, since they may prevent refractory degradation and help in the production of foaming slags. Nevertheless, Cr-bearing solid phases can lead to Cr losses, being therefore detrimental. Determination of the states of thermodynamic equilibrium for this system using a slag with fixed composition as a start material were made using MgO amount as variable. Results show the impact of the MgO content on the equilibrium phases (molten metal, liquid slag, solids) and their composition for this system.

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The forestry reclamation approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes (i.e., greater than 23°) could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. During this first phase of investigation, there has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analysis indicates that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope. In most resource recovery plants the incoming solid waste material is first shredded and then air classified into a light and a heavy fraction. The light fraction which contains mostly paper, cardboard, etc., can be used either as a fuel for power generation or in the production of new paper products. The heavy fraction which remains consists mostly of glass, ceramics, wood, ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals. The ferrous metals may be removed from the heavy fraction by conventional magnetic separators. After primary shredding, most of the glass and ceramic is fine in size and may be screened away leaving a residue of wood, cardboard, and non-ferrous metals. This residual heavy fraction is the input material for the separator described in the present paper. A new metal separator was recently reported by t. Schlömann1. The author described the theoretical relationships and presented results of tests on samples of the residual fraction of municipal solid waste. This paper describes the operation of the metal separator and develops the basic separation relationships controlling the process.

The increasing interest in the subject of electrical separation warrants the addition to what has already been written of a few lines covering the practical workings of the Tilly Foster mill under the direction of Mr. E. S. Moffat, General Manager. Since my last paper was presented to the Institute, Mr. S. P. Tomkins, the superintendent, has had thrust upon him for solution several problems complicated by the introduction of new conditions. 1. The richer portion of the lean ore dump, and that nearest the railroad track, having been worked up in 1890, the handling of the balance, including a largely increased amount of rock, could only be accomplished at an increased cost. 2. The tailings had accumulated close about the mill to such an extent that arrangements had to be perfected to move them further away.

"The closure of the iron and steel making plant at Consett in Durham in 1980 marked the end of an era-a long era in the world's iron and steel making history. Iron had been smelted in the Tyne-Wear area of the United Kingdom since before the Roman period, but apart from evidence of smithing in the Roman period, the historical evidence for iron production on a large scale dates from the 14th century.The paper describes sites in the area that first worked the bloomery process and then, in the 16th century, as did most of Europe, graduated to the blast furnace process. The main emphasis is on the early introduction of coal to iron making at the end of the 18th century and the use of the steam engine to render integrated sites possible.IntroductionIron has been smelted in the Tyne-Wear area of the United Kingdom since before the Roman period, but apart from clear evidence of smithing in the Roman period, the historical evidence for iron production on a large scale dates from the 14th century. Like many other countries, the United Kingdom benefitted from the visits of foreign observers, such as Jars, Svedenstierna, de la Houliere and Dufrenoy, who left detailed records. Iron ore, limestone, wood, coal and water power were all found a short distance away from the main valleys of the Tyne and Wear. The main sources of iron ore were the coal measures, with rider ores from the lead vein s in Alston and Weardale, and carbonate ores from shale horizons in the Carboniferous limestone. Good coking coal was available from West Durham and reasonable coal from the Tyne valley and Northumberland limestone. Limestone was plentiful."

Sulfur has been one of the most troublesome elements encountered since the earliest days of iron smelting, and this problem will become of increasing importance as the higher sulfur coke is used, because of the rapidly diminishing supply of low-sulfur coals suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The deleterious effect of sulfur in iron and steel is well known; therefore, except in special cases, it is desirable to make the iron produced by the blast furnace as low in sulfur as possible. Sulfur enters the furnace in all of the raw materials, but principally in the coke. It comes out of the blast furnace distributed between the iron and the slag; very little passes out of the furnace with the gases. The mechanism of the reactions that cause the sulfur of the coke to pass into the slag and iron has not been studied to any great extent, although the character of the end products, and the conditions controlling the distribution of the sulfur between the iron and slag, are fairly well known. In the iron, the sulfur occurs as ferrous sulfide; or manganese sulfide in case of iron high in manganese. In the slag, the sulfur is present mostly as calcium sulfide. The presence of free sulfur1 and sulfates in blast-furnace slags is to be accounted for on the basis of oxidation of the calcium sulfide after the slag is tapped. The generally accepted reaction for the relation between the ferrous sulfide in the iron and in the coke, and the calcium sulfide in the slag, is that given by Howe? FeS + CaO + CDFe + CaS + CO

A few years ago somebody connected with one of those self-constituted bodies of unofficial character, like a Chamber of Commerce, Board of Trade, or State Development Board, started a catch-phrase referring to California as a The Land of Sunshine, Fruit, and Flowers," and the railroad magazines and folders keep it steadily in use, working day and night. Yet it altogether ignores the substance which brought the State into the Union, which peopled it, and which made it famous thronghout the world. You ladies and gentlemen who have come from what wc here call "the East," have in your own States, no matter which one, sunshine, fruit, and flowers. But your Eastern States, having these things as we do, have not the gold that we do. Therefore, the old designation of " The Golden State," applied to California, should be revived, as being the most distinctive term. It is worthy of remembrance, too, that during the dark days of the civil war this State handed over $172,000,000 in yellow gold, and saved the credit of the nation. Gold-mining has been carried on in California since '' The days of old, The days of gold, The days of '49," and it still continues. Since that historic year, and up to the end of 1910, the State has produced, in gold alone, $1,530,214,468. Since 1792 the entire United States production of gold has been $3,261,573,500, so that the single State of California has, in that period, produced within $201,144,564 of one-half of all the gold from Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and the Southern and scattering States. The early history of the mining and metallurgical industries of Pennsylvania is so intimately associated with the section of the State in which we meet, that a brief resume of a few of the important historical facts, and a reference to some of the more modern enterprises, in which members of the Institute have been largely concerned, seem appropriate to this occasion. It is just two hundred years since the publication of the earliest mention of the manufacture of iron in Pennsylvania. What kind of iron this was, or where or by whom it was produced, is uncertain. The only record of it is the following verse, quoted in the admirable work of Mr. James M. Swank,* from a poem published in 1692: " A certain place here is, where some begun To try some Mettle, and have made it run, Wherein was Iron absolutely found, At once was known about some Forty Pound." One who stood one hundred and seventy years ago on the summit of this Neversink Mountain † (had the atmospheric conditions been favorable, and the timber somewhat removed) might have noticed in the daytime the smoke, or at night the reflection, from the fires of the first successful Pennsylvania iron enterprises, scarcely 15 miles to the south, viz.: Rutter's bloomary forge, built in 1716, and the Colebrookdale blast-furnace erected in 1720, respectively 3 and 8 miles distant from Pottstown. Here the pioneers of iron production in the State which has so long led, and still leads all others in this manufacture, had their trials and successes ; and it may be a satisfaction to some who bewail a present depression in trade, and the low prices now ruling, to recall the fact that in 1731 pig-iron is reported to have been sold ''in large quantities" at the Colebrook-

The direct injection of cement grout into water-bearing fissures as a means of checking or stopping the flow of water into shafts and tunnels has been experimented with for a decade or longer and seems to have been first attempted in Europe. The earliest application of which the writer has found a record was at a shaft sunk by the Mining Society of Lens; this is described by C. Dinoire in the Transactions of the Institution of Mining Engineers.1 It is only lately, however, that the process has been entirely successful. This success has been accomplished on the Catskill Aqueduct, now under construction by the city of New York. This aqueduct includes a number of deep pressure tunnels, reached by shafts for both waterway and construction purposes. In portions of these shafts and tunnels considerable underground water was met. The contract for the first of these deep pressure tunnels was let to the T. A. Gillespie Co.; this section is known as the Rondout Siphon. It leads under the Rondout valley at a depth of from 400 to 800 ft. and is about 5 miles long. The engineers expected that considerable water would be encountered, but fortunately this was not the case except at one shaft, known as No. 4, which penetrated the rock at a junction between limestone and conglomerate. Water-bearing fissures were encountered almost immediately. At a depth of about 200 ft. a flow of 1,500 gal. per minute was struck. The. shaft then contained as many pumps as could be used, and it seemed impossible to sink it further. After vain efforts had been made to proceed, John P. Hogan, a division engineer of the Board of Water Supply, suggested that cementation of the fissures be tried. The process was attempted for the first time in this country. Since the shaft was partly full of water it was necessary to drill grout holes with a diamond drill. Platforms were placed on the timbers at the water level, the diamond drill was installed and six 90-ft. holes were drilled in the bottom of the shaft. Several car loads of cement were pumped through these holes into the fissures, the drill casings being used for grout pipes. After the discovery of the rare-earth mineral deposit in the Clark Mountain area near Mountain Pass, San Bernardino County, Calif., two samples wore obtained through the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines for investigation of possible method of concentration. Three other samples were received later from different locations in the same area. The rare-earth mineral in this ore had been identified by E. T. Schonk as bastnaesite, a fluocarbonate of the rare-earth metals containing cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium, thorium, uranium, etc. Associated with the bastnaesite were barite, silica, and some calcite. The bastnaesite contained a small amount of iron as a coloration and some manganese. Twenty to fifty percent of the weight of the samples studied was bastnaesite, or ten to twenty-five percent total rare-earth oxides; about half was cerium oxide. Apparently, none of this mineral occurred in pure form. Even the highest-grade particles 'wore contaminated by fine, interlocked grains of barite, calcite, and silica; barite contamination predominated, and the barite was interlocked with varying amounts of bastnaesite. While the specific gravities of pure bastnaesite and barite (approximately 5.0 and 4.50 respectively) differ enough to allow separation by gravity, the interlocking of the minerals nullified this difference. Consequently, only a partial separation could be made by gravity concentration. The extremely fine grained texture of most of the ore prevented grinding to a size that would make concentration by flotation practicable; a partial separation of barite by this means was effected.

In the last two decades we have witnessed many new developments in the art and science of mineral beneficiation. Competition and the pressures of inflation have caused operating managements to search for every possible way to squeeze out a few more cents savings per ton of product. One illustration of this is the trend toward the use of larger grinding mills. A few years ago a 1000 hp ball mill was considered a giant. Now we have many examples of successful grinding mill installations of 3000 to 4400 hp connected load per mill. The trend toward these larger mills is increasing every year, and we have not seen the upper limit yet. For example, three 6600 hp cement finish mills are presently being built for a plant in Missouri.

IN 1923 a Western mining company was experimenting with the device of an inventor designed to locate buried ores by radio. Because the progress was slow and the results were confusing, the company began to doubt the usefulness of the method and invited me to review the whole question of the application of physics to ore detection. I was fortunate in securing the cooperation of several physicists who had worked with me during the war on the problem of submarine detection. This group has been increased and has been studying the problem of physical exploration for ores since that time. It was evident that the problem is a big one, with many angles of approach. Its general features may be set down, in rough outline, as follows: The soils, rocks and ores hidden beneath the surface differ one from another in many respects. These differences may be made to furnish a clew for the physicists working from the surface. To bring these differences into action the physicist creates some kind of an effect which penetrates into the ground and is distorted and reflected when it meets boundaries between different sorts of underground structure. In other words, he sends a message down, and the rocks and ore send back signals in reply. In picturing this process, we should not regard the ground as dense and impenetrable. The kind of messages used pass through the earth about as readily as a sound wave travels the air. If, then, the fundamental procedure is to shout down questions in the hope that an orebody will hear and answer back to us, it is clear that a large part of the expert's study must relate to the kind of questions best suited to the temperament and intelligence of orebodies. It will be easier for the ore to reply to some of our questions than to others, and it is for us to find the right questions. In certain cases, we are spared the necessity of using a messenger; because nature has already provided one. For example, we already have a terrestrial magnetic field which auto-matically and continually conveys messages from underneath. The dispersion model of nonideal flow was applied to describe the hydrodynamic state within the flotation column. Residence time distribution (RTD) data of a laboratory flotation column were measured to determine the parameters of the model. The effects of operating variables and column geometry on the Peclet number which reflects the extent of axial dispersion were investigated and a semi-empirical expression of Pe was formulated. The dispersion model was validated for the column flotation of ultrafines coal. Under the conditions of sufficient aeration rate and frother addition, a good agreement between the measured recoveries and predicted data was obtained. The dispersion model with first-order flotation rate process of the flotation column developed in this study is useful in predicting the collection zone recovery of fine coal, and for the flotation column scale-up.

The effects of grain size and shape on alloys of titanium with nitrogen and aluminum have been determined. Increasing a grain size decreases strength and hardness and increases impact resistance. Quenching from the ß field produces subgrain markings delineating a plates in Ti-N alloys but not in Ti-AI alloys. This suggests a precipitation from the high nitrogen alloys. ALPHA titanium alloys are single-phase alloys with the hexagonal-close-packed structure of a titanium. If these alloys are worked and annealed within the a field, equiaxed structures result in which strength is derived from the solid solution of the alloying elements present. Strain hardening can be used to increase further the strength of a titanium alloys. This is the only other mode of strengthening the a type of alloy. Quenching from the ß field has been noted by many investigators to have little effect on the strength of iodide titanium and on commercial titanium. Ti-A1 alloys were found to be little different in hardness, whether annealed in the a field or quenched from the ß field.' These facts illustrate a characteristic of a titanium alloys: they are insensitive to heat treatments from the ß field. Underlying this heat-treatment insensitivity are the facts that the a-ß field is generally narrow in a titanium alloys, the transformation-temperature range increases with a-stabilizing content, and the a solubilities of the alloying elements are greater than the ß solubilities. When quenching is done from the ß field, there is no supersaturation of the alloying elements in the acicular transformation structure produced. Welds in a titanium alloys generally are ductile, because no transformation hardening occurs during cooling.1,2 Other desirable features of a alloys are: no thermal-stability problem, excellent toughness, and retention of strength at elevated temperatures better than a-ß or ß alloys of comparable room-temperature strength. The prime factors governing the properties of a titanium alloys are the amount and kind of solute present. This can change the a phase from a soft, tough material into a hard, brittle material with no apparent change in microstructure. Moreover, brit-tleness can exist over a wider alloy-content range, without change of phase, than in most other metals. The solutes for a titanium may be divided into interstitial and substitutional types. Oxygen and nitrogen dissolve interstitially in rather large amounts, extending well through the brittle range, and the transformation-temverature ranges are raised in the process.:' , carbon has a maximum interstitial solubility of about 0.5 pct at the peritectoid temperature, while at lower temperatures the solubility decreases to about 0.2 pct.3,5 Substitutional a solutes include aluminum and tin. Aluminum has a high a solubility of 25 pct Al, and increases the transformation-temperature range markedly.6,7 Tin has a high a solubility of about 20 pct, but has a relatively innocuous effect on the transformation-temperature range.' The choice between interstitial and substitutional solutes generally has been conceded to the substitutional solutes because of a belief that they do not have as adverse an effect on ductility and notch toughness. However, a recent investigation8 on the effect of hydrogen on titanium has shown that this element, which is not under compositional control, has a powerful detrimental effect on notch toughness. Hydrogen was shown to form a hydride which is practically insoluble (about 0.002 pct) in a titanium at room temperature, although the solubility at the eutectoid temperature of about 300°C is relatively high, about 0.16 pct. Limited data were presented on the effect of hydrogen on a alloys, where the same impairment of toughness as in unalloyed titanium is found. The work reported here describes the effects of interstitial and substitutional solutes on 1—the mechanical properties of high purity titanium free of titanium hydride and 2—the influence of structural variables on these properties. Nitrogen was selected as an example of an interstitial solute with high solubility and aluminum as a substitutional solute with high solubility. All compositions were well within the ductile range, since it was not intended to study the brittleness problem here, but to study only the factors influencing optimum mechanical properties. Procedures The alloys were prepared from iodide titanium as 1/2 Ib ingots double melted to insure homogeneity.

Over the past 25 years hard-rock mining companies have developed a number of profitable computer applications which appear applicable to operations in the coal industry. The evolution of these applications are described and the most profitable discussed. The basic nature of these systems is that they must cut across organizational boundaries. While technological advances contributed significantly to the successful implementation of computers within mining, the human aspects related to organization, management and control of systems projects remain as key to future success in coal as they were and still are in hard-rock mining.

The trace element geochemistry of the cherty, clay-rich carbonate residuum. Covering much of southern Missouri and adjacent parts of Arkansas was investigated during the early 1970's as part of a statewide geochemical survey of Missouri-1/2/3 The study was environmentally oriented and focused on the character of the "natural' geochemical environment of the state. A great deal of effort was made to collect samples that would represent the geochemical variability of the near-surface environment in an unbiased way. In general, this was accomplished by use of randomization procedures in both collection and analysis. Most of the sampling sites were selected randomly to prevent personal bias from entering into sample selection. In the laboratory, samples were analyzed in a randomized sequence to circumvent the effects of any systematic bias that may have entered into the laboratory procedures. Several residuum samples contained 1 000 parts per million (ppm) or more of Pb, Zn and Ba. All these samples were collected in Washington County in or near the barite district. The frequency distributions shown in figure 1 indicate just how unusual the residuum in Washington County is with regard to these three metals and copper. The shaded parts of the histograms represent the samples from Washington County. The histograms are based on analyses of 141 samples from 38 localities scattered over the subcrop of the Cambrian and Ordovician Formations of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Eight localities were selected randomly from over each of four bedrock units--Bonneterre Dolomite, Potosi and Eminence Dolomites, Roubidoux Formation, and the Jefferson City, Powell and Cotter Dolomites. Six localities were selected randomly from over the Gasconade Dolomite. The geochemical "background" for these elements in residuum is defined by samples from outside of Washington County (unshaded part of the histogram); lognormal distribution curves have been fitted to the corresponding parts of each histogram. The thermodynamic properties of hedenbergite, of composition [(Ca0,9516) (Mg0,0583Fe2+0.7134 Fe3+0.0934 Mn0,1366) (Si206)], were experimentally determined at the Bureau of Mines. The standard enthalpy of formation determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry is AHf298 = -680.96±0.855 kcal/mol. The standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides is AR-96 = -24.55±0.485 kcal/mol. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined by adiabatic calorimetry from 12.3 to 300.1 K. The derived standard entropy is S-98 - 41.218±0.148 cal/mol-K. High-temperature heat capacities were measured with a differential scanning calorim¬eter from 397 to 1,147 K. These experimentally determined data were combined with data from the literature to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of formation over the temperature range of measurements. Standard enthalpies of formation are given as a function of temperature. The standard Gibbs energy of formation at 298.15 K is AGf298 = -641.90±0.86 kcal/mol.
