"The Murray Brook gold mine operated from September 1989 to March 1991. Approximately 1.2 million tonnes of gossan were mined from an open pit and treated at a rate of 900 tonnes per day. The facility applied an agglomeration vat-leaching cyanidation plant for gold and silver recovery. The leached ore or tailings were rinsed of residual gold and cyanide and placed on an adjacent clay lined pad for storage and containment. A 50,000 tonne heap-leach demonstration project was constructed at Murray Brook in 1992 to recover copper and zinc from ore located in a sulfide-rich zone occurring beneath the gossan. The operation proved unsuccessful because of poor recoveries and low metal prices. The project terminated in the same year.A corporate decision was made in September 1999 to undertake complete and final reclamation of the Murray Brook site. Jacques Whitford and Associates Limited were contracted to develop the final reclamation plan and to assist the company in presenting the plan to the New Brunswick government for approval. The government approved the plan in January 2000. Two important reclamation issues were the mobility of mercury from the gossan tailings and the potential of acid mine drainage from exposed sulfides. The mine site is situated upstream of a productive river system, and the issue or impact of chemistry changes to the environment over the long term became an overriding factor in the development of the reclamation plan.A resource assessment of the gossan tailings in 1999 indicated an average concentration of mercury of 40 ppm. The mercury occurred naturally as the mineral cinnabar, but the exposure to residual cyanide (less than 10 ppm) over several years in the pile has likely caused much of the cinnabar to decompose into more soluble mercury forms. The reclamation plan specified the replacement of all sulfides to the pit followed by approximately 600,000 tonnes of gossan. To ensure “fixing” of the mercury, the gossan was replaced in compacted lifts and both the remaining pile and that replaced to the pit covered with available till and compacted. The reclamation work was successfully completed in September 2000 and the chemistry of the receiving environment will be monitored over a three-year period, after which the company expects to achieve walk away conditions."

There was less activity in the petroleum industry in Indiana in 1933 than in previous years, owing largely to adverse market conditions. The only development of any consequence was for oil in Perry and Vander-burgh counties in southwestern Indiana, a few gas wells being brought in in Jay County in northeastern Indiana. Indications are that there will be more activity in southwestern Indiana in 1934. Little change may be expected in northeastern Indiana. One hundred and sixty wells were drilled in Indiana in 1933, of which 57 were dry, 44 produced oil, 38 produced gas and 21 either were not completed or information on them was lacking. There were 153 wells abandoned and plugged in 1933, as compared to 205 in 1932. Southwestern Indiana This area centers about Gibson County and is the principal source of oil and gas production in the state. Production is from the Lower Pennsylvanian and Upper Mississippian formations. Oil production for 1932 was approximately 847,000 bbl. and for 1933 was 804,000 bbl. Gas production for 1933 was 942,000,000 cubic feet. The Siosi field, in southwestern Vigo County and northwestern Sullivan County, discovered six years ago, produced approximately 244,000 bbl. in 1932 and 223,000 bbl. in 1933. Production is from Devonian and Silurian formations. The oil is high gravity, but contains considerable sulfur. The Shelburn and other small pools in central Sullivan County produced approximately 68,000 bbl. in 1932 and 2,000 bbl. less in 1933. Production is from one or more of five horizons in the Pottsville and is obtained at 600 to 800 ft. This area also produces approximately 19,000,000 cu. ft. of gas a year, supplying the city of Sullivan. The field is over 20 years old. The Gibson-Pike County area, made up of many small pools, including several in southern Knox and southwestern Daviess counties, produced approximately 486,000 bbl. in 1932 and 450,000 bbl. in 1933. The movphology of the Mg-32 wt pct Al eutectic has been studied as a function of freezing- rate and temperature gradient. At slow freezing rates a lamellar eutectic was formed; whereas, a rod-like eutectic was generated at fast rates. The inter-lamellar spacing increased as the freezing rate decreased in aggreement with theoretical predictions. Lamellar faults, morphologically similar to edge dislocation models in crystals, were responsible for the subgrain structures in the eutectic mixture. A linear increase in fault density with freezing rate was observed. Fault concentl-ations of the order of 10 per sq cm for a range of freezing rates from 0.6 to -3.0 x 10 cm per sec were estimated. The transformation from lamella?, to rod-like morphologies was determined experimentally to be dependent on the freezing rate and independent of the temperature gradient. Moreover, the number of rods formed per- unit cross-sectional area increased exponentiallv with increasing freezing rote. BRADY' and portevin2 classified eutectic structures into lamellar, rod-like, and globular according to the morphology of the solid phases present. Although this classification is quite descriptive, very little has been reported on the details of the mechanism by which the eutectic structures are formed. Recent work by Winegard, Majka, Thall, and chalmers3 and by chalmers4 on lamellar eutectic solidification suggest that the maximum thickness of the lamellae decreases with increasing rate of solidification due to inadequate time for lateral diffusion. scheilS and Tiller' have shown theoretically that the lamellar widths indeed depend on the solidification rate. However, there has been no experimental evidence to support the theory. Chilten and winegard7 have studied the interface morphology of a eutectic alloy of zone-refined lead and tin. They found that the lamellar width decreased as the freezing rate increased in agreement with the theoretical predictions of scheils and Tiller.' More recently, Kraft and Albright' have investigated the microstructures of the A1-CuA12 eutectic as a function of growth variables. They observed lamellar faults present in the lamellar eutectic, similar to edge dislocation models in crystals. Furthermore, Kraft and Albright reported that they could not designate which extra lamellar was responsible for the formation of a lamellar fault even under electron microscopic magnification. In this paper, the morphology of the Mg-A1 eutectic structure is described. The effects of freez- ing rate on the interlamellar spacing and on the lamellar fault density are presented in detail. The transformation from lamellar to rod-like eutectics is discussed in terms of the freezing rate and the temperature gradient. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental details of alloy preparation, the decanting mechanism and the determinations of the freezing rate and the temperature gradient have been reported elsewhere. Measurements of plate-edge angles were made with a microscope. The true angles used to determine the interlamellar spacings were determined by a two surface analysis technique.'' Since the decanted interface structure does not represent the true eutectic morphology on the solid,g all measurements were made from an area in the solidified bar behind the interface. Measurements of the apparent interlamellar spacings between the two phases of the eutectic were made on a photographic negative by means of a calibrated magnifier. Each value listed in Table I represents the average of thirty measurements on one negative. In general, these measurements are approximately equal with an error of less than pct. The average rod diameter for each specimen was also measured on a magnified photomicrograph. Each value of the diameter represents the average of fifty measurements. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The experimental observations and their discussion to be presented here are restricted to the morphology of the eutectic structure and to the effects of the freezing rate and the temperature gradient on the solidification of eutectics. INTERLAMELLAR SPACING It has been shown previouslyg that the micro-structure of the decanted interface and the longitudinal section of the Mg-A1 eutectic is characterized by the presence of both lamellar and rod-like morphologies. The lamellae become more regular as the freezing rate is decreased. A three-dimensional photomicrograph representing a perfect lamellar morphology is illustrated in Fig. 1. The lamellae of the top and longitudinal sections of the specimen are regularly spaced while those in the transverse section are not quite straight and parallel. Both of our parent companies have a long history of commitment to the fertilizer industry. This year, Farmland Industry celebrates its 71st year in the business, and Norsk Hydro celebrates its 100th operating year! We employ approximately 300 associates in Central Florida. What We Do Farmland has been active in Hardee County, FL since the 1970’s as a large landowner and citrus grower. We plan to expand this activity into phosphate rock mining. The phosphate rock produced here will be shipped to our nearby chemical fertilizer complex in Polk County, where we produce quality phosphate products - liquid and granular fertilizers. Of the phosphate rock mined, 90% is used to make fertilizer. AustraliaÆs current interest in renewable energy is based on a desire to reduce the countryÆs greenhouse gas emissions. Wood from sustainable sources offers a unique opportunity to combine greenhouse gas benefits with other significant environmental and social benefits, including salinity mitigation, carbon sequestration, soil replenishment and rural industry. The challenge is to make renewable energy from wood in a cost competitive manner, so that this broad range of benefits may be best realised. Bioenergy and carbon products are of great interest as new, commercial forestry products that can drive large-scale environmental tree planting:In Western Australia, Enecon has worked with Western Power Corporation to build the first full-scale plant for integrated processing of mallee eucalypts, to produce activated carbon, renewable power and eucalyptus oil. It is intended that this plant is the first of a number of such plants to help catalyse environmental tree planting in Western Australia. New technologies being developed overseas may provide competitive bioenergy in areas where traditional markets for wood do not exist. For example, pyrolysis converts wood into a bio-oil that may be transported to remote sites for power generation in gas turbines. Pyrolysis also produces wood char. Pyrolysis and wood-to-ethanol technologies, coupled with short rotation coppicing trees, offer the long-term prospect of large-scale production of renewable fuels around the country.

Mineral properties and mineral firms often trade at a market value that is significantly greater than the value indicated by discounted cash flow (DCF) techniques. A possible explanation is that DCF analysis does not consider the value derived from managerial flexibility. Presumably, then, at least some of the difference between DCF value and market value is due to managerial flexibility. This paper surveys the recent attempts to empirically quantify the value of managerial flexibility using option pricing theory. The results indicate that managerial flexibility, at least as measured by the option pricing methodology, falls well short of explaining the gap between DCF value and market value.

Ore handling improvements at Mount Isa Mines Limited were necessary to keep abreast of technological advances in all phases of sublevel stoping practice.In the early 1930s an efficient ore handling system was in operation.However in 1936 excessive water encountered in deepening the hoisting shaft necessitated the sinking of a second hoisting shaft. Financial difficulties prevented abandoning the original shaft and surface ore handling and crushing facilities, so ore was transferred underground and underground crushing deferred. It was not until 1951 Jhat multilevel crushing permitted increased efficiency in the handling of ore from stopes. Ore was then hoisted in one shaft and transferred on the surface by conveyor belt to a new crushing plant.In 1956 a planned production increase from 5,000 to 11,000 tons per mining day made possible further improvements in ore handling. Larger equipment was installed and existing equipment modified to capacitate the handling of larger sized ore at increased daily tonnages.INTRODUCTIONThe intensive exploratory programme commenced in 1954 disclosed large reserves of both lead and copper ores and in 1956 an expansion programme was initiated to increase production from 5,000 to 11,000 tons per mining day. The increased tonnage would result in decreased costs per ton and further cost reductions would result from increased mechanisation underground. The combined effect would permit larger tonnages of lower grade ores to be included in ore reserves. The control of Florida phosphate flotation plants is largely based on the visual observations of experienced operators, both in recognizing good and bad froth conditions and in making judgments about the composition of feed, concentrate and tailing streams. Chemical analyses lag the process by at least two hours and, therefore, only assist in recalibrating the operators' vision when major deviations occur. An image analysis system was developed by IMC Fertilizer to improve the accuracy and precision of the composition estimation process. It still relies on the operator taking a representative sample, but provides a measurement in about 15 minutes after that sample is obtained. Background The search for a quick and inexpensive technique for estimating phosphate flotation stream composition continues. There have been attempts at using "wet chemistry," nuclearmagnetic resonance, neutron activation, X-ray diffraction and other techniques reported on in the past several years. None of these have yet found its permanent place in the flotation plants of the Florida phosphate industry. IMC attempted to use wet chemistry to provide 7.5-minute estimates of final concentrate insol and tailings BPL. This was aborted after 36 months of plant operation due to the high operating costs for chemicals and an operator. There was also no significant economic improvement in the plant's operation. Another factor was the necessity to limit these crude analyses to only a few process streams, which were insufficient to achieve improved plant operation.

The heat flow processes determining the injection and shut-in temperature logs in a water injection well have been analyzed and the theoretical basis for determining the water injectivity profiles from the temperature logs has been presented. Both the injection and the subsequent shut-in logs are necessary to resolve the injection interval into relative water intake strata; the former, to provide an accurate estimation of the thicknesses of the strata, and the latter to indicate the major and minor intake rates into the strata. A procedure is described for estimating the injectivity profile from the temperature logs and is applied to several temperature logs. For a water injection well, a comparison is made of the injectivity profiles obtained from the core analysis, the spinner survey, and the temperature logs. INTRODUCTION In secondary recovery of oil by water flooding, the injectivity profile is needed to obtain diagnostic evaluation of water intake distribution over the injection interval. If the distribution is unfavorable among the various strata, corrective measures can be taken to provide better control. Numerous methods have been developed for determining the injectivity profile from water velocity measurements in well bores. Often, dependence is placed upon core analyses and/or electric logs for estimating the relative water intakes over the injection interval. In many cases, the temperature log method described herein will give results more diagnostic than those obtained through use of the other available methods inasmuch as it is based upon the study of temperature disturbances in and around the well bore as a function of water flow in the well bore and in the formation. This method is the result of analyses of a number of temperature surveys made in water injection wells to determine the point of entry of the water into the formation. The material in this paper is presented in two sections: the first deals with the theoretical study of temperature survey data, and the second deals with the field application. PART I — THEORETICAL TREATMENT OF TEMPERATURE LOG DATA Before discussing the various aspects of heat flow relative to temperature log data, the phenomena that give rise to well bore temperatures — namely, the indigenous formation temperature and the associated rates of heat flow — will be considered. Geothermal Gradient The geothermal gradient is defined as the increment of depth at which the indigenous subsurface temperature increases by l°. It is caused by the continuous flow of heat outward from the interior of the earth. The flow of heat is an equilibrium process between the heat sources, the thermal conductivities of the formations, and the mean surface temperature. Therefore, there is no accumulation of heat energy in the path of heat transmission, and the geothermal gradient for a given formation will depend upon its thermal conductivity.

The performance of RETIMET metal foam as a flame arrester on explosion-proof enclosures was investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines both in laboratory tests and at the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) Approval and Certification Center, Triadelphia, WV. The objective of this research was to develop a permissible pressure vent for use on lightweight, vented, explosion- proof enclosures. In laboratory tests, four grades of RETIMET, a stainless steel foam material, were evaluated: (1) 45 NC-7, (2) 45 NC-13, (3) 80 NC-7, and (4) 80 NC-13. Explosive gas mixtures were prepared by a dynamic flow system. Ignition was by a low-voltage arc. Each grade of RETIMET metal foam successfully arrested the flame front in all methane-air tests. To evaluate RETIMET metal foam on large, commercial size enclosures, a multicompartmented enclosure was designed and tested in MSHA's explosion gallery in Triadelphia, WV. Extensive explosion testing revealed that a minimum vent-area-to-enclosure-volume ratio of 11.33 in2/ft3 is required to keep internal pressure rises below 3 psig. The RETIMET metal foam functioned satisfactorily in all tests as evidenced by the absence of external ignitions.

THE crystal structure of Zral, the compound richest in zirconium (91.03 pct Zr by weight) in the system Zr-Al, has been found to be ordered face-centered-cubic. This compound is of particular interest, since it is encountered as the precipitated phase in potentially useful zirconium-rich alloys. It forms peritectoidally from body-centered-cubic zirconium and Zr,Al at about 975°C. The Zr-A1 constitution diagram has been reported by McPherson and Hansen.' For the primary determination a 100 g ingot was prepared by arc-melting in a water-cooled copper crucible under purified argon. The raw materials were crystal-bar zirconium (a purity of better than 99.7 pct) and spectroscopically pure aluminum. The ingot was double melted, examined metallographi-cally, and found to be quite uniform as shown in Fig. 1. The hardness of the as-cast button was VHN 390 to 445. A 20 mil diam specimen was prepared from annealed (900°C) filings of Zr,Al. The specimen was mounted in a 5 cm radius powder camera and an 8 hr exposure was taken using copper radiation with a nickel filter. The structure of the compound Zral was found to be ordered face-centered-cubic of the Cuau type, with an a,, value of 4.37220.003A. Its calculated density is 5.976e0.013 g per cu cm. The relative intensities for the lines were calculated using the formula 1+cos2 20 I oc----------------- • p • /F7 sin2 0 cos 0 1 + COS' 20 where----------------is the Lorentz polarization fac- sin2 0 cos 0 tor, p is the multiplicity factor, and F is the structure factor. The X-ray data are given in Table I. The compound has exhibited plasticity when present as particles in a matrix of a zirconium. During hot working at about 900°C, the compound has been found to deform plastically to the extent that some of the particles exhibit a length-to-width ratio greater than 4:1 as shown in Fig. 2. In answer to the discussion of ref. 1, McPherson and Hansen pointed out that the compound may be cold rolled and reduced as much as 33 pct. Zr,Al has also been found2 under certain conditions to precipitate in lamellar form at grain boundaries of the a phase of hexagonal-close-packed zirconium. The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service port construction, transshipment and environmental control. The major problem is the transshipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and/or new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. The present report reviews progress in slurry transportation research which has been done in Japan since the 1960s when large scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are discussed.

In recent years, especially in the last decade, great interest has been shown and many advances have been made in the preparation and cleaning of coal. In the major coal-producing countries, the percentage of tonnage cleaned has been increasing ever since 1924. As separating media, both liquids and gases are used, these generally being water and air respectively. Some systems, instead of obtaining separation by the velocity of the medium in which the coal is cleaned, depend on the density of water mixed with sand, or coal dust and shale, or with chemicals such as calcium chloride. In studying the results of coal-cleaning equipment, it will be observed that the efficiency of the cleaning apparatus lowers as the size of the coal decreases. This inability to obtain any marked improvement in the fines has been partly responsible for the installation of dedusting equipment, to remove the fine sizes from the raw coal prior to cleaning. When considering the possibility of installing dedusting equipment, many factors must be taken into account. Very often, but not always, both the ash and sulfur content of the coal increase as the coal size decreases. When bituminous coal, containing soft powdery fusain, is subjected to a wet washing process, the porous fines of the fusain remain in the small coal or in the wash water and delay the dewatering of the washed coal and increase the difficulty of clarification in settling tanks or thickeners. When a dedusted coal is cleaned by a wet process, the sludge recovered from the settling tank often runs so high in ash that the sludge can be discarded without further treatment and still the loss is small. Where treatment of the sludge is desired, however, froth flotation may be used to advantage if the size of the feed is below 1/10 in. Dust from the deduster can be treated in a similar manner. Fusain, which is usually found in the fine sizes, has often a much larger ash content than other coal. Illustrative of this condition is a table of ash contents for the various petrographic constituents of Illinois coal (No. 5 bed) as given by Mitchell' (Table 1).

(written discussion?).-A few months ago we became interested in deter-mining the properties of. pure nickel as a metal for certain uses and arranged, in cooperation with the International Nickel Co., a series of tests on cold-rolled so-called pure nickel and both longitudinal and transverse specimens annealed at 100° intervals from 250° to 1050° C. Since our tests confirmed; in a general way, the observation put forth by Messrs. Browne and Thompson, they are given at this time. A bar of hot-rolled nickel about 9 in. (23 cm.) wide and 1/2 in. (12.7 mm.) thick made by the International Nickel Co. -of grade A stock, analyzing nickel plus cobalt 98.48 per cent., iron 0.67 per cent., manganese 0.27 per cent., carbon 0.07 per cent., silicon 0.162 per cent., sulfur 0.033 per cent., and copper 0.22 per cent., was cold-rolled down to a final thickness of 0.134 in., malting a 73.2 per cent. reduction by rolling. Test specimens, 9 by 1 in., cut parallel (marked longitudinal) and normal (marked transverse) to the direction of rolling were milled to give a test section 2 5/8 in. long by 0.5 in. wide. Three specimens each, longitudinal and transverse, were annealed at one time in a nichrome-ribbon-wound tube furnace. The temperatures were taken with a Pt-PtRh thermo-couple in conjunction with an Engelhard millivoltmeter. An annealing period of .) 2 hr. plus 25 min. preheating was used in all cases. Sclero-scopic and Brinell hardness tests and static tensile tests were made on the rolled and annealed specimens. The tensile tests are shown in graphic form in Fig. 7. The Brinell and scleroscopic values are given herewith.

Large deposits of titaniferous iron-ore occur at Caribou, an old silver-mining camp in Boulder county, Colo., 17 miles west by south of Boulder, and a few miles northwest of the tungsten-mines. Professor Regis Chauvenet1 published a part analysis of the ore many years ago, but gave no description of the wall-rock. Caribou hill, which contains both the silver-bearing veins and the iron-ore deposits, is a low dome of gabbro surrounded by the Archæan schists and gneisses of the Front range of the Rocky mountains, the peaks of which, a few miles west of Caribou, attain an elevation exceeding 12,000 ft. The gabbro stock is roughly elliptical in outline, with approximate diameters of 1 and 3 miles. The crest of the dome is 10,500 ft. above sea-level, and the town and ore-cleposits are 500 ft. lower. Outcrops of the iron-ore occur in the town and extend NW. for 2,000 ft., where they disappear under the swampy meadows of Caribou park. Portions of the deposit are covered by drift, but one continuous outcrop is 900 ft. long and from 200 to 250 ft. wide. A second deposit is 0.25 mile south of the town along the eastern slope of the hill. It is not as well defined as the north bed, but is approximately 1,000 ft. long and from 100 to 200 ft. wide. The easily disintegrated ore does not form prominent outcrops, but the outlines of the deposits are readily traced by the large amount of ore fragments that cover the ground. Trenches and pits sunk on the outcrop expose a roughly banded magnetic iron-ore, with pyroxene as the principal gangue-mineral. The Gabbro. This rock was classified in the field as a gabbro from the presence of pyroxene and striated feldspars, and for convenience the field-name will be retained.

The relationship between areas of iron powders, briquettes, and sintered compacts and tensile strength has been determined. It has been found necessary to distinguish between two types of areas which exist in such powders—a macroscopic area due to the shape and size of particles and a microscopic area due to pores and cracks in the surface. Only the macroscopic area, specifically the area due to particle irregularity, contributes to tensile strength; the microscopic area cannot be forced into contact with adjacent particles ond does not participate in bond formation. Of the two methods of area measurement employed in this study—permeability to liquids and gas-phase adsorption—only the former is useful for determining the roughness factor. A measure of this roughness, (area measured by permeability to liquid) -f- (orea of powder with the same size distribution, but made up of spherical particles), is shown to be uniquely related to tensile strength at constant density. The other important factors in determining the strength of sintered-metal compacts are the density and presence or absence of surface oxide. THE manufacture of metal parts by the process of powder metallurgy is an important and rapidly growing industry. Progress has been rapid and continuous, largely because of the excellent research in the field. Nevertheless, the process remains inherently complex and empirical. Several investigators have shown that the properties of the final compact must depend on many variables; namely, shape,' size distribution,"-" nd compositiona of the original particles, the pressure necessary to compress to the desired density, the density of the compact, the time and temperature of sintering, and so on. Through the application of some new techniques to the study of powders and compacts, and the correlation of a number of observations of known variables, the present paper attempts to clarify and simplify the underlying theory of the powder-metallurgy process. Any theory must start with the obvious fact that the strength of a compact, its most useful property, is due to the formation of welded areas between adjacent particles, and attempt to deduce what effect other variables will have on (a) the area and (b) the intrinsic strength of these welds. Such welded areas can be demonstrated by electron micrographs, as in Fig. 1. It was believed that (a) could be most directly studied by means of surface-area measurements on the original powders and on the compacts made from them; the area decrease should be related closely to the welded area. A representative group of eleven iron powders from commercial sources, and made by a variety of processes, was chosen for this study. In addition to the surface-area measurements, correlations were established between the tensile strength and all the known variables which might possibly affect it. The results are quite unexpected. They indicate that the situation is much simpler than the authors had anticipated. The strength of the sintered compact is determined, indeed, by no more than three variables; viz., the irregularity of the original particles, the density of the compact and, in exceptional cases, the amount of surface oxide. All three had been recognized previously as having some effect on the tensile strength, but in the absence of the special techniques and interpretations to be developed here, there could be no suspicion that they were the only relevant variables. Materials and Methods Material—All the iron powders were commercial products obtained from the Amplex Division of Chrysler Corporation. Powders A, B, C, and J were very pure electrolytic iron. Powder D was made from oxidized scrap reduced by heating with an excess of cast iron. Powder E was a high-grade iron ore reduced by hydrogen. Powder I was prepared by atomizing molten cast iron in an air blast, quenching the droplets in cold water, and crushing the coarse powder. Mill scale (oxide) is added and the mixture heated to reduce the high carbon content. The other powders were all prepared by reduction of iron oxides, such as mill scale. They
