"In the cement deep mixing (CDM) method, one approach to joint construction is creating a surface-contact joint. In this study, an unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression test was performed on cement-treated soil specimens with joints artificially created by successive pouring. The effects of the presence or absence of such successive pouring joints on the strength of the specimens were then examined. The results showed that the compressive strength of the specimen decreased by approximately 0%–30% with a successive pouring joint.INTRODUCTIONIn the block type and wall type improvement patterns of the CDM(Cement Deep Mixing Method) application, an integrated body of soil-cement columns is constructed by partially overlapping individual treated soil columns. The overlapping operation should be implemented before the hardening of soils by cement progresses and thus, this operation is routinely performed in construction sites usually within 24 hours or within 48 hours at a maximum. However, when the operation is forced to be interrupted on account of a typhoon or any other adverse weather conditions, it is impossible to carry out the overlapping operation within the above time limitations. In such a case, it is necessary to improve the integrity between the treated soil columns solidified first and the treated soil columns to be constructed later.One of the methods that can be adopted is to prior agitate the target area by mixing blades “without cement”, integrating the preceding treated soil columns and the subsequently treated soil columns at construction joints. This method has been adopted so far in numerous sites because no additional materials or equipment are necessary. However, its effectiveness has scarcely been evaluated quantitatively in conventional studies.In the circumstances, the authors investigated in the present research the effect of the presence or absence of construction joints on the specimen strength by performing unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests using specimens of cement treated soil artificially provided with surface-abutting construction joints.Therefore, this study examined the effects of the presence or absence of artificially created successive pouring joints on the strength of cement-treated soil specimens through an unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression test."

Zinc monocrystals, when compressed nearly parallel to their basal planes (within 20), deform in a new way; and certain deformation markings, called "-bands," are typical of this new mode. Characteristics of these bands are described. Mechanical behavior of low angle zinc monocrystals was investigated in some detail. Recrystallization did not occur upon annealing of banded specimens that were free of deformation twins. -Bands do not seem to be the result of nonbasal slip, but rather, a result of a microbuckling mechanism. u-Bands differ qualitatively and quantitatively from ortho kink bands. A dislocation model, consistent with some of the features of u-bands, is described. THE plastic deformation of zinc monocrystals with slip planes (0001) nearly parallel to the stress axis was studied in this investigation. In a previous investigation, it was shown that some low angle zinc crystals (those with slip planes making angles of more than about 2.5+1° with the compression axis), deform by ortho kinking while others (those with slip planes making angles of less than 2.5+1° with the compression axis) deform in a new way.' This new mode of deformation will be described in some detail here. Some of its striking features are: 1—it operates only for compressive stresses, 2—its temperature dependence is anomalous, and 3—it exhibits a new type of "yield-point" behavior. The mode of deformation to be discussed is not new in the sense that no previous evidence of its existence had been reported. The markings that it creates on the cleavage surfaces of zinc crystals have been described by several investigators.'" However, this is the first time that it has been made to operate under controlled conditions so that its response to mechanical variables, temperature, and aging treatments could be investigated and its geometry completely described. Apparently. Jillson' as well as Holden3 and Pratt" believed that the small bands they observed were simply small versions of ortho kink bands. In fact, two of these authors3,6 "alled the markings "micro kink bands." In spite of the precedence, it is felt that this term is not entirely suitable because these bands do not have the same genesis as kink bands, and they are qualitatively different in structure. As will be indicated by later discussion, the bands seem to be related to the tensile deformation bands observed in aluminum. The present author has chosen to call the bands "micro deformation bands," or simply ",ubands," and the deformation process, ''p-banding." Experimental Methods Crystals were grown from 99.999+ pct Zn obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. The details of the technique are given elsewhere." It should suffice to say that the crystals were seeded for orientation control, and precision pyrex tubes were used for molding them. About 40 crystals were used, yielding some 130 specimens. Fig. 1 illustrates the typical form of the specimens and shows how the orientation angles are defined. The crystal specimens were usually 1 3/4 in. long and about 150 mil in diameter. The angle between the slip or cleavage plane (0001) and the specimen axis is designated by xo, while a is the angle between the maximum slope of the (0001) plane and the nearest close-packed direction [1210], vary ing from 0°to 30°. The crystals were cut into specimens with a jeweler's saw and the ends were squared by filing (specimens held in V-block). Crystals of this orientation are stiff toward bending, so this procedure introduced only deformation localized at the ends. Then the specimens were polished either chemically in 50 pct HNO³ or electrolytically in 20 pct chromic acid. The mechanical tests were made with an Instron testing machine. This machine weighs by means of electric strain gages on elastic bars and is quite stiff, since the full-load deflection of its load cells is at most 0.002 in. Most of the testing was done at a

A career in the mining industry is both challenging and rewarding but comes with some unique complications. Few other industries have such a far reaching effect on individualsÆ lifestyles. Furthermore, few people working within the resource sector could say their job has had no effect on their lifestyle. Mineral deposits in Australia seem to exist predominantly in remote locations like Telfer, Mount Isa and Olympic Dam. With this comes a choice for young professionals; one that is not easy to make, with either alternative often having its pitfalls. This remote nature usually requires professionals (especially graduates and juniors) to choose between a fly-in, fly-out location or relocation to a remote town with less facilities (and some may argue attractions) than their coastal cousins. The challenge for young professionals is to pursue a career that will satisfy their professional goals while developing and maintaining away of life that is emotionally fulfilling.

Hydrologic assessments of existing and proposed waste rock stockpiles are typically required for application of operating and closure permits at mine sites. A hydrologic assessment should include an evaluation of climatic data and prediction of the net infiltration rate through the waste rock stockpile surface. In addition, hydrologic factors such as the time required to deplete available moisture storage in the stockpiles and the time required for potential seepage to migrate to the underlying aquifer should also be predicted.

Effective recycling or disposal of flue dusts is a continuing problem for copper, brass, and bronze smelters. Over 300,000 short tons (st) of dust is generated annually by U.S. secondary copper, brass, and bronze smelters. The Bureau of Mines has developed an alkaline leach method for recovering metal values from copper converter flue dust containing zinc, tin, lead, and copper. The dust was leached with a hot solution of ammonium chloride and ammonium hydroxide to solubilize ZnO. All of the tin (as Sn02) and the metallic copper, lead, and zinc, as well as possible insoluble compounds of each, report to the residue. Dissolved copper and lead salts are removed from the leachate by cementation with granular zinc. Zinc oxide is precipitated by diluting the leachate with water. The tin-rich (9.8 pct) residue has a ready market. The cement product is recyclable to the smelting operation. The ZnO is at least 97 pct pure and has potential marketability.

Longwall mine layouts with their entries, chain pillars, face support systems, advancing mining faces and compacting gobs represent a geomechanically complex mining operation. Geomechanical aspects are further complicated if mining occurs at depths exceeding 350 m, as stresses induced adjacent to the excavations exceed the unconfined strength of the coal and result in fracturing of the sidewalls of entries and chain pillars during development. Traditional methods of geomechanical analysis, whether empirical or numerical, are unable to represent such behavior satisfactorily. Achieving some meaningful results requires explicit representation of the three-dimensional boundary conditions and implementation of appropriate constitutive models for the rock mass. This paper describes a numerical modeling methodology for deep longwall mines operation using the FLAC3D finite difference de, which incorporates a strain softening constitutive law for modeling failure of coal. An important aspect of the modeling method includes accounting for stress relief provided to the pillars and entries due to the increasing load applied to the compacting gob.

Investigation of the Gilley fluorite deposit was based upon examinations made by several of the Bureau's mining engineers. Fluorspar was found in the dump talus of sloughed and water-filled trenches and shafts, and there were indications that faulting or other dynamic distortions favorable to deposition of this mineral in minable quality and quantity might exist. The inference was based upon a field study of the area and its comparison with fluorspar deposits in Kentucky. The proximity of this deposit to the iron furnaces at Gadsden and Birmingham was a factor that influenced its investigation, as the demand for metallurgical grades of this critical mineral is acute. The present supply for the district is obtained from out-of-State sources, and the value of any local deposit would be enhanced by the saving in freight charges. The Gilley fluorspar deposit is 17 miles east of Gadsden and 50 miles northeast of Birmingham, Ala. Mineral deposits occur as thin veinlets and small bunches of fluorite in upturned bode of siliceous limestone. The ore-bearing structure is a reverse fold, and the mineral deposit appears as a replacement along crumbled zone fractures of the contorted limestone.

Because trade increased among various nations after World War II, the Coal Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe established a Classification Working Party in 1949 to develop an International system for classifying coal. Although national classification systems existed, they had been developed in accordance with characteristics of domestic coals without reference to coals of other countries. Terms for describing similar or identical coals differed in each nation. This caused confusion in evaluating coals shipped in international trade and also hampered exchange of technical information on problems of coal utilization. Experts4/ participating in the classification project early in their work agreed that two systems should be formulated, one for the higher rank coals or so-called "hard" coals in European terminology and the other one for the lower rank coals, the latter designated mainly as brown coals and lignites in the various countries. Rank refers to the degree of metamorphism (progressive alteration) in the natural coalification series from lignite and brown coal to anthracite. The system for classification of hard coals was published late in 1956 as a document of the United Nations.5/ Results of a study for applying this system to American coals were published in 1958.6/

In situ leaching, initiated in 1986 at the San Manuel Mine, was economically developed in 1989. The primary reason for this lag time between startup and viable production was the time required for technical development. The technical development pursued comprised detailed design, development and implementation of in situ well construction methods, formulation of suitable well pattern arrays and the development of extensive hydrogeologic and geochemical knowledge of the mineral deposit. Since 1989, the in situ leaching program has become a viable and cost-effective method to extract copper from the supergene mineralized zone of the San Manuel deposit. The in situ leaching methods that are currently used have been progressively expanded and continually developed. They will become the cornerstone of copper production from the San Manuel oxide mineral deposit. This paper presents an overview of the supergene hydrogeology, current design techniques, drilling methods and well completion, pump determination and setting, solution management and future plans for the increased extraction of copper by in situ leaching methods at the San Manuel Mine.

The inadequacy of traditional geostatistical methods for estimating some precious metals deposits has become apparent in the last few years. New methods or estimation such as Indicator, Probability and Multigaussian Kriging are difficult to understand and apply. Case studies using a new method of variogram calculation proposed by Srivastava show the method valuable for variogram estimation in precious metal deposits. Some simple, sometimes unorthodox. estimation methods that have proved useful in Some situations are presented.

In order to conduct these investigations in an orderly manner they are carried out under a published schedule of tests known as Schedule 20, which specifies detailed requirements for motors, controllers, etc., and fees covering the various inspections and tests made as part of a routine investigation.

This paper has been written to summarize the laboratory and field studies leading to injection of Pacific Ocean water into the Third Grubb formation. Laboratory tests for studying the permeabilities of cores to Pacific Ocean water are described. Resu1ts of these tests showed that the water could be successfully injected if it is chertzically stable, sterile, and properly filtered. Clay swelling was shown to be a comparatively minor factor in permeability reduction. Studies leading to development of an economical system for properly conditioning the ocean water are discussed. It was necessary to control pH, calcium carbonate deposition, bacterial growth, iron solubility. oxygen, and suspended .solids. A relatively simple system combining the use of sulifur dioxide, a quaternary rlmmonium chloride, and filtration was shown to adeqrrately control all these factors. This combination has not previozrsly been used as a water treating technique. Evaluation tests of the water conditioning system prior to injection are described, and results of such tests are presented. Control measures needed to insure a continusously adequate water treatment are reviewed. INTRODUCTION The utilization of sea water for waterflooding has only recently been attempted. Knowledge of treating requirements has been limited, and in most cases no water treating has been done. Prior to the initiation of the Third Grubb zone pilot water flood at Ventura, Calif.,1,2 extensive laboratory research was done in an effort to define the treatment necessary to provide a suitable injection fluid. Close coordination and cooperation between field and research personnel were found to be the foremost requisites in developing the most economical and practical method for treating ocean water. LABORATORY STUDIES Plugging Tendencies of Untreated Ocean Water A program of laboratory studies was initiated for the purpose of evaluating whether ocean water could be injected into the formation for prolonged periods of time without causing plugging of the pore spaces of the formation. Because of the fairly low permeability of the formation (averaging about 40 md), it was realized from the outset that a water of exceptionally high quality was needed. Ocean water used in the laboratory studies was carefully filtered through ultrafine fritted glass filters, having nominal maximum pore sizes of 1.4 microns. Permeability tests were then performed on representative core material from the formation. It soon became apparent in these tests that filtration alone was not a sufficient treatment for the ocean water. Prolonged injection of the filtered water caused rapid plugging of the core samples. The permeability decline of a typical sample is illustrated by Curve A in Fig. 1. The several factors which can contribute to this plugging tendency are briefly reviewed below: Interaction with Formation Clays An evaluation of clay swelling effects on liquid permeability was made using core samples from the Grubb formation. An oil was chosen for determining the reference liquid permeability because it would not tend to react with any clays that might be present in the formation. The samples were then extracted, dried, and resat-urated with either treated ocean water, formation water, or fresh water. Permeabilities to the various waters were then determined. Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners. Compressive and shear stresses induced in liners not protected by coarse ore are so severe that deformation or minute subsurface cracking are inevitable in all but the small production grinding mills, regardless of mill liner alloy strength or hardness.

The object of this paper is to describe the adaptation of electrical resistivity measurements to the particular case of exploration in which the surface is an expanse of water (river, lake, sea). Water in itself does not constitute an obstacle to electrical exploration. It is merely an overburden, which is fluid instead of being solid, and as a consequence the routine of the measurements has to be modified. Also, in many instances, the liquid under consideration is highly conductive (salt water). This introduces an additional difficulty into exploration work, and has to be overcome by the geophysicist. We do not propose to discuss here the basic principles of electrical resistivity measurements, which have been dealt with in various previous papers,' but will simply recall the two fundamental techniques which govern its field application: 1. Horizontal exploration, or method of the resistivity map, in which a series of electrical measurements are carried out at various stations, keeping the same electrode spacing. Thus, a horizontal layer of the subsoil, of a practically constant thickness, is explored. 2. Vertical exploration, or "vertical sounding"2 method, in which a seriesr of measurements is made with increasing electrode spacings at one or several stations. In this way, the apparent resistivity is determined at a given station for various increasing thicknesses of the ground.

A SATISFACTORY mathematical relationship between shear, elongation and change of orientation in the axial straining of a single crystalline rod or wire may be based on a simple model in which blocks, representing glide lamellae, glide over one another and rotate so as to maintain the original fixed position of the axis as the wire elongates.1 Obviously such a model gives no information concerning strain-hardening or the atomic adjustments at the sliding surfaces and their influence on the internal structure of the blocks. Moreover such an operation could be conducted with rigid blocks only by using self-aligning grips or a flexible attachment which would permit the adjacent blocks to freely assume their changing orientations. There are many unsolved problems (see Andrade2) concerning the manner in which nature departs from the simple model in permitting the essentials of slip, rotation and elongation to occur along with strain-hardening and the appearance of glide lamellae of various dimensions and special characteristics, not fully appreciated at the present time. This paper describes part of an extensive investigation on the development and characteristics of glide ellipses in single crystalline alpha brass rods and is especially concerned with the observation of cross-slip in crystals oriented wholly within the range of slip on a single system according to the generalizations first presented by Taylor and Elam in 1923.3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Half inch rods of alpha brass (nominally 70 pct Cu, 30 pct Zn) * were converted into single crystals by melting and gradual solidification in a graphite mold according to the Bridgman method.' In order to remove any coring, the crystals were homogenized at 800°C for 16 hr and tested by etching with a 50 pct nitric acid solution. The back-reflection Laue technique as described by Greninger5 was used for determining the orientations of the crystals. Standard stereographic operations were employed to locate the specimen axis in a triangle of the Taylor and Elam3 projection so that the slip plane and direction could be predicted. The lineage structure reported by Buerger6 was present in the crystals used in this investigation. However, only crystals were used in which the internal differences in orientation did not exceed two degrees. Very little is known concerning the effect of the presence of a lineage structure on the detailed mechanism of plastic deformation.

Two problems which are common to nearly every branch of applied physics, including geophysics, are the ‘Dirichlet Problem’ and the ‘Poisson Problem.’ A numerical method for their solution is derived and a problem of heat flow in a plate is solved using a high-speed digital computer. The solution to this problem is presented in a form which illustrates the versatility of computer output.

Brown and Yant6/ recently described a microprojection method for determining the particle-size distribution and number concentration of samples of dust collected from the air by such samplers as the Owens jet dust counter7/ and the thermal precipitator8/. This method was developed to obviate or reduce the eyestrain consequent to the regular filar-micrometer method9/ and to save time and work. The article stated that work was in progress on a microprojection method for courting impinger dust samples; this article describes the method developed. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The assistance of the personnel of the Ventilation Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., Butte, Mont., in developing this method and particularly in suggesting a suitable material to use for the microprojector screen is sincerely appreciated.
