Most of the Indian coking coals are medium coking and of very high ash content. Beneficiation of these coals is a must for their utilisation in coke making. During washing while the ash content of the coal is reduced, the same is expected to affect the reactive-inert ratio and the proportion of various petrographic constituents in the clean coal. This will affect the coking behaviour, including the expansion characteristics, of such coal. An increase in expansion behaviour of coal increases the wall pressure and may damage the battery wall. Therefore, close monitoring of coking properties along with drop in ash is necessary for smooth use of the coal in coke ovens. An effort is, therefore, essential to understand the impact of washing on its coking properties. The studies were carried out with captive coals of Tata Steel, India. Three medium coking coal samples namely, VII A, VI A and XI SEB seam coals of West Bokaro Colliery were used for the study. The coal samples after washing to different ash levels were subjected to the following analysis: proximate, crucible swelling number (CSN), LT GK test, dilatometer and plastometer tests and petrography. The experimental data were then analysed to assess the relationship of various coking properties of the coal with its ash content. The studies clearly show that there is a strong impact of beneficiation of the coal on its coking behaviour. The impacts are more at lower level of ash in the clean coal. In general, the coking properties increase with a decrease in ash. This is primarily due to an enrichment of vitrinte materials in the clean coal and an increase in the reactive-inert ratio in the coals. However, the most important impact of the lowering ash is on the increase in the swelling nature of the coal. The coals with lower ash become highly expanding in nature. This may be very critical from operations of coke ovens point of view, especially stamp charged coke ovens. Necessary precaution should be taken in selecting the other coal blend constituents when these coals are beneficiated to a very low level of ash content.

The outstanding features of 1926 in the petroleum industry included the following: 1. Stocks of all oils (crude and refined) were reduced, making the first annual decline since 1918. 2. Domestic crude oil production increased steadily during the last 11 months of the year, accelerating during the fourth quarter, and ending the year at the highest level ever attained. 3. Three new major oil fields were developed—Panhandle, Spindle-top and Seminole. 4. Important advances were registered in production technique, tending to retard the declines of old wells and to maintain the flush periods of new wells. 5. The problem of gaining greater economic control of production through unit operations and gas conservation received growing recognition by the industry and the Federal Oil Conservation Board. 6. The rate of drilling was sharply increased during the second quarter of the year and suffered only a very slight retardation during the closing months. 7. The runs of crude oil to stills were maintained above normal throughout the year and underwent acceleration during the fourth quarter. 8. The gasoline situation was marked by a continuous and substantial increase in the rate of production of cracked gasoline, and by an improvement in the statistical position of the commodity. 9. Prices of both crude petroleum and its principal derivatives were characterized by more profitable levels and greater stability than for a number of years past; and, while showing declines during the fourth quarter, prices did not recede sufficiently to slow down materially either drilling or refinery operations. SUNNARY AND CONCLUSIONS Argentina presents to the foreign and local investors a mineral wealth that is largely unexplored, untested, underdeveloped and therefore incompletely evaluated. In view of the above, the new administration of President Raul Alfonsin through its Department of nines has designed and implemented a strategy ( Plan de Expansión Ninera P.E.M.), whose main objective aims at improving the "investment climate" in the sector. It is the Government's basic intention to apply the Mining Promotion Law with responsibility but with generosity to encourage the attraction of investment (local and foreign) to the sector. The establishment of a Data Bank system to evaluate possible new potential ore mining developments will help to connect the owners of potential projects with investors outside the sector. Argentina has an interesting gold ore potential. Estimated reserves of individual projects already known amount to almost 300 tonnes of gold for potential production. The government strongly believes and present information indicates that more systematic exploration has to be undertaken in the Jurassic areas that almost cover the whole of Patagonia. Two recent gold discoveries (Angela in the Chubut province, and Cerro Vanguardia in Santa Cruz province) indicate the potential of this area.

Fluid energy grinding, or jet pulverization, refers to the process of entraining solid particles in high velocity gaseous or vaporous streams and reducing their size by impact and attrition against other particles or some sort of target. Since all desired size reduction is not achieved in one pass through the zone where energy is applied, some form of classification is necessary to return oversize particles to the grinding zone for further size reduction. Applications Fluid energy mills have normally been used to produce products where the particle size is basically finer than 325 mesh. Products having particle size distributions with a maximum size of 4 or 5 µm, and with a high percentage finer than I µm, can be produced using fluid energy mills. More recently, some fluid energy grinding units have been applied economically to produce ground products with 1 or 2% coarser than 200 mesh. It is also possible to consider usage of a jet-pulverizing zone, without the usual integrated air classi¬fier, operated either in open circuit or in conjunction with a screen. Feed sizes to be delivered to the fluid energy mill depend on the material involved, the type of jet pulverizer used, the finished product size requirement, and the upstream process. In some units feed sizes up to l in. or larger can be accepted, but practical economics usually require the starting material to be -4 mesh or smaller and some pulverizers are typically fed at 20 mesh top size. It is not unusual to find feed materials at essentially -325 mesh when extremely fine products are needed, since capacities are improved with finer feeds. Conventionally the fluid energy grinding process has been used for relatively soft and nonabrasive materials. This includes very low¬melting-point and temperature-sensitive materials or coatings, since there is no measurable temperature rise during fluid energy milling. More recently, however, jet pulverizers are being used on highly abra¬sive materials such as silica, feldspar, glass, zircon, calcined alumina, coke, boron carbide, and similar materials. Since the primary energy application is by impact of particles against themselves, there is a low rate of wear resulting in a small amount of product contamination and in low maintenance costs. Usually the fluid energy pulverizer produces a more narrow particle size distribution than other mills provide, and this is useful where such a requirement exists. It is possible, within limits, to adjust classifi¬cation and other functions of the overall fluid energy system to vary the particle size distribution curve and thereby approach the broader distribution obtained from other grinding methods. By controlling the temperature, composition, and humidity of the fluid used, it is possible to incorporate other functions with the size-reduction process. These include drying or adding moisture, coating, mixing and blend¬ing, and even oxidation or reduction and other chemical reactions or their inhibition. The finished product is discharged in the fluid stream and is conveyed pneumatically to the desired point, where a suitable dust collector must be provided. Operation and Mechanical Features One of the earliest fluid energy mills is the Micronizer now manu¬factured by the Sturtevant Mill Co. Similar units are also manufac¬tured by Jet Pulverizer Co. and others. As shown in Fig. 81, the micronizer consists of a shallow circular grinding chamber with noz¬zles arranged at the outer periphery to discharge tangentially inward. Fluid (usually compressed air or superheated steam) is provided to the nozzles from a manifold at pressures normally in the range of 100-150 psig and at temperatures up to 800°F or higher, depending on the raw material, required results, and economic factors. A technique for collecting and analyzing the small quantities of gases desorbed on heating metal powders has been developed. The gases collected from copper powders of various types of manufacture have been analyzed and found to contain H2O, CO2, and SO2. The quantities of gas evolved vary from 0.05 to 1.0 milliliter, under standard con-ditons of temperature and pressure, per gram of powder. The source of the gas has been traced to surface films on the powder. IN the powder-metal industry it is recognized that the presence of gases in the powders affects the processing and resulting properties of the sintered product. Several sources for these gases are possible; namely, chemical reactions with the sintering atmospheres, inclusion. of gases during compacting, dissolved gases in the metal powder, and sorbed gases on the metal-,powder surfaces.1, 2, 3 Since the quantities of the gases are relatively small, no direct attempt has been made to collect and analyze them nor to isolate their source. The work that has been done has been concerned with the dimensional stability of the product., its porosity, density, or mechanical and physical properties. Conclusions are drawn on the basis of studies of this type as to the probable effect of gases on these properties. 4, 5, 0 In the present investigation an attempt has been made to obtain quantitative data on the analysis and quantities of gases associated with copper powders manufactured in different ways. Apparatus was constructed to collect gases evolved from loosely packed powder samples on heating to various temperatures under a reduced pressure of helium. The powders were outgassed thoroughly in a vacuum prior to starting the collection operation in order to eliminate mechanically entrapped gases and to prevent the possible reaction of the powder with these gases. Experimental Procedures Materials—The major portion of the investigation was carried out on a single heat of water-atomized, oxygen-free, high-conductivity copper. A relatively coarse fraction of this powder, 20 to 100 mesh, was tested as a mixed powder and as various graded size fractions. THE writer of this article has not attempted to write a technical paper; on the contrary, he has tried to express in "steel-plant English," for steel men, a viewpoint drawn from his practice and experience. It is not his thought that it shall be taken as the "last word" in the making of this class of steel, or that good rimming steel cannot be made by any other practice. The paper was written to serve as the basis of a discussion from which it is hoped much benefit may be derived. The paper deals only with rimming steel made by the open-hearth process, and with the lower carbon steels, such as sheet and tin bar, rivet stock, skelp, etc., although good rimming steel as high as 40 to 50 carbon can be made by having good open slags and giving proper attention to working and tapping temperatures.

September 1981 I'm here today to report on a revolution -- a revolution in the way the Federal Government looks at energy. I'm not talking about a simple change in the relative emphasis on sources -- such as more recognition for coal and nuclear power, with less rhetoric about "soft- technology." Nor am I describing a mere change in focus -- from the demand side to the supply side. And I am not referring exclusively to our obvious goal of budget cuts. No, I'm here to discuss a fundamental change in Federal direction -- one that started as soon as President Reagan was inaugurated, and one that is articulated in the National Energy Policy Plan he sent to Congress in July. That brief policy document was backed up by three volumes of supporting data; but I think I can catch it's flavor for you in just three phrases: * First, various energy forms complete with each other and complement one another. * Second, fair competition among them (which includes honest pricing) will give us the best "energy mix." • And, finally there may be ligitimate arguments about where Federal responsibility in regard to energy spills over into Federal interference; but it's about time we drew the distinction -- and eliminated the latter. This Administration's national energy policy is quite different from any we have had in recent years. It is tuned to human nature and changing times. We are seeking the best practical solutions in the energy -a lot better than the ones we have been offered before, but still something less than perfection. One way we do that is by counting on a fully informed public to guide it's own destiny. And, instead of treating energy as an isolated entity, we recognize it as part of the overall economy. The President's Program for Economic Recovery is as much a factor in energy policy as the specific actions of the Department of Energy. One striking difference from the past energy policy 1s that this policy plan does not say: "In 1985 we will -produce so many hundreds of millions of tons of coal: . . . or . . . "By the end of this century the Nation will be deriving X percent of it's electricity from wind generators." Unfortunately, targets like these are what many people have come to expect from the Federal Government -- and what they think of as energy policy, whether the figures hold up in the long run or not. But . . . think about it! Nether the Department of Energy nor any other part of the Federal Government produces coal, or mines uranium, or manufactures solar collectors. There are only a few sections of the country where the Federal Government generates and sells electricity. So it does not take any great insight to recognize that the amount of energy we will produce or consume as a Nation In the future depends on many factors beyond direct government action. And those future totals cannot be predicted precisely, anyway -- by the Government or by anybody else. According to our way of thinking, the choices should be up to the people. When the free market works within a healthy economy, individuals express their preferences in the marketplace -- adjusting the balance of all energy factors continually in a way that no computer could be programmed to reflect perfectly. So, instead of having the Government issue a rigid set of numerical goals, our main concern simply is that there be enough energy. We want the Nation itself to decide how much that should be, what form it should take, and how that energy should reach consumers. The marketplace decides. Considering the recent past, this is indeed a revolutionary idea. It has some pitfalls, and we won't reach this ideal of free choice overnight. But that is where we are headed. And I'll offer some evidence in a few minutes that the policy has already started working. First, let me give you some of it's highlights: 1) Nobody who appreciates the philosophical underpinnings of this Administration will be surprised that the energy policy shows faith In domestic energy production and the supply side of the economy; but it also recognizes the important role of energy conservation -- the wise and efficient use of energy resources.

The Gabbs magnesite-brucite deposit is unique in size and is one of two magnesite deposits being exploited in the United States. It is near the town of Gabbs, which is one hundred miles southeast of Reno, in west-central Nevada. The brucite was discovered in 1927; the magnesite was found while exploring the brucite. During World War II, more than 80,000 tons of magnesium metal was produced from about 900,000 tons of magnesite ore mined from these deposits. An additional 5,000,000 tons of magnesite and 1,000,000 tons of brucite have been produced for use in making magnesia refractories and chemicals. Basic Inc., presently the only producer, mines 1.5 ± 0.25 million tons of ore and waste annually using high-selective open-pit rriethods; the ore is up-graded, calcined, and processed into a variety of products. Known reserves of highgrade (less than 5 per cent CaO) magnesite ore total more than 25,000,000 tons, and there are larger tonnages of lower-grade material; brucite reserves are small. The magnesite and brucite are in generally west-dipping dolomite of the upper member of the late Triassic Luning Formation, in the over-riding plate of the Paradise thrust fault. A great variety of dikes and a stock of Cretaceous granodiorite intrude the Luning Formation in the vicinity of the magnesite-brucite deposit. The magnesite bodies are scattered over an area of about a square mile around a prong of granodiorite which extends north from the stock. The brucite is mainly in two bodies in contact with the prong of granodiorite; at the surface and along deeper cracks the brucite has weathered to hydromagnesite and artinite. In the area of magnesite-brucite mineralization, much of the dark, fine-grained, schistose, regionally-metamorphosed dolomite of the Luning Formation has been marmorized to a lighter-colored, coarser-grained, massive dolomite that is intergrown in varying proportions with the magnesite. The magnesite and marmorized dolomite can not be distinguished visually. In addition to the two varieties of dolomite, the gangue in the magnesite and brucite bodies mainly is the various varieties of dike rock, serpentine and a variety of other "contact" minerals, and "post-ore" dolomite and calcite. The magnesite ( and recrystallized dolomite) is believed to have formed by the hydrothermal replacement of the regionally metamorphosed sedimentary dolomite; alternatively it has been suggested that the magnesite is sedimentarv and formed contemporaneously with the dolomite in an embayment of the Triassic sea. Because all the igneous rocks exposed in the immediate vicinity of the magnesite deposits appear to be younger than the magnesite, the ore-forming solutions are thought to be related to a somewhat older granite which crops out elsewhere in the area. The brucite is the result of contact-metasomatic replacement of magnesite during the emplacement of the granodiorite stock.

An earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) and pipe jacking were used to construct a 430-meter-long segment of sanitary sewer force main. The force main was constructed by first jacking a 2045-mm-outside-diameter, reinforced concrete cylinder pipe (RCCP) casing through alluvial sands and gravels. Later, a 1220-mm-diameter, ductile iron carrier pipe was installed within the casing pipe. The main concern affecting the construction method selection was the elimination of the need for dewatering, which could cause groundwater flow from deeper, contaminated sands up across a silt aquitard into cleaner, shallower sands. In addition, the method selected reduced the volume of soil to be handled and, consequentially, the potential amount of contaminated soil to be managed. Items discussed in the paper include provisions for handling boulders and controlling ground movements as excavation and jacking occurred approximately 300 mm beneath an active,4800 kPa, 254-mm-diameter natural gas transmission pipeline.

A practical method is described for determining or checking whether underground supports such as props, posts and mechanized longwall supports have bearing areas of proper size in relation to the type of ground or floor strata on which they are standing, It is felt that this information provides an approach to eliminate, as much as possible, a potential grave source of error during the selection of roof supports. This would also affect the choice of costly mechanized longwall equipment where it is possible that the size of the bearing area is not as carefully determined as, for instance, the design strength of structural components.

In the course of the preparation of my paper on " The Occurrence and Treatment of the Argentiferous Manganese Ores of Tombstone District, Arizona" (Dam., xvii., 767), my attention was called to two patents which have been issued for the use of a diaphragm at the upper end of a Howell furnace, whose importance merits more than a passing reference. Mr. J. K. Pardee invented and first put into use in the Algon quin mill, at Philipsburg, Mon., in 1880, a ('new' and useful im provement in rotary ore-roasting furnaces," which was intended "to increase the capacity, effectiveness and working economies of such furnaces." The following description and accompanying figures are taken from the patent papers, dated December 21st, 1880: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the feed-end of the Howell rotary furnace, with parts broken away, the better to exhibit my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same, showing a modification of my invention. In operating a furnace of this kind, of the capacity of one ton of ore an hour, it was found that for the best work the two fire-places (one at each end of the revolv ing cylinder) consumed about ten cords of wood every twenty-four hours, and that about twenty-fonr tons of silver-ore were introduced through the feed-pipe. It was also found that of the amount of ore, fully one-third did not go through the revolv ing cylinder, but went into the dust-chanibers about the feed-end of the furnace or cylinder, and this ore going into the dust-chambers was found not to be sufficiently chloridized for amalgamation, but had to be re-roasted. I then caused to be made, out of boiler-plate iron, a segment of a circle, the height of which was about one third of the diameter of. the cylinder or furnace, the circumference of the circle being smaller than the circumference of the furnace, so that about a half-inch space would be left between the plate and the furnace, when said plate or segment was in position. This segment or plate of iron was then fastened to the bottom of the feed pipe, as shown in the drawings, wherein A represents the revolving cylinder or furnace; B, the fire-place and dust-chambers at the feed-end of said furnace; C, the inclined feed-pipe, and D, the diaphragm, partition, or plate fixed within said furnace, A. With the diaphragm or plate, D, in the position shown, the furnace was run for about a month, and it was found that with the furnace in best working condition only four cords of wood every twenty-four hours were consumed, that no fire was required at the feed-end of the furnace, that not one-twelfth of the ore

One who has been trained in belief in the law of supply and demand and its effect upon prices finds it difficult to adjust himself to the minute regulations imposed by the New Deal, and also to the bewildering changes of government policy as expressed within a short period of time between the antitrust laws and the N.R.A., and later by the Bituminous Coal Conservation Act of 1935. A survey of the coal industry since the World War, both in this country and Great Britain, however, shows that regulation of some sort is needed if any stabilization is to be achieved and if the wage structure and economic welfare of the many communities dependent solely upon coal are to be maintained. Let us look at what has happened to the industry since 1920, which can be considered as the end of the period affected by the war influence. This discussion will be confined solely to bituminous coal, although many of the general conditions are equally applicable to anthracite, the position of which now is at least as bad as that of the softer variety. Since 1920—to the end of 1934—the production of coal has decreased from 568.7 million to 358.4 million tons, or 37 per cent; the number of mines from 14,766 to 6,258, or 58 per cent; the average annual production per mine has changed from 38,512 to 57,425 tons, or 50 per cent. The number of large mines has increased considerably, and the number of men employed has decreased from 639,547 to 458,011, a reduction of 28 per cent, while the average output per employee has changed from 4.0 to 4.4 tons, or an increase of 10 per cent. The average price per ton of coal at the mine has varied from $3.75 to $1.75. During that time wages decreased largely until 1933 and since that time have increased, until now the rates paid are considerably above those in other occupations, although the actual yearly earnings are low, because of part-time work. From 1920 to the signing of the Jacksonville wage agreement in 1924, about two-thirds of the men were union members and practically all of the nonunion mines were south of the Ohio River; with the fixing of the high wage scale of that agreement, which soon proved to be an uneconomic one, many of the mines found that they could not retain their business, so gradually changed to nonunion. Brine produced from subsurface formations may be employed successfully instead of fresh water as a flooding, medium in the secondary recovery of oil. The feasibility of this substitution has been proved in the shallow "shoestring" area of eastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, where the supply of fresh water often is limited. In this procedure all brine produced with the oil is returned to the formation and thus is prevented from contaminating streams and fresh-water supplies. This report includes a detailed description of a "flood project" in eastern Kansas studied by the Bureau of Mines. In an attempt to determine whether brine, when handled properly, can be used as effectively as fresh water in flooding oil from partly depleted formations, an analysis was made of all known conditions that influence flooding.

IIT Research Institute has investigated the potential of high pressure water jets for rapid rock excavation. During this study, an attempt was made to correlate the extent of breakage effected to the mechanical properties of rocks. Six rock types were used in these experiments and nine properties were determined for each rock variety. A regression equation using the two most significant rock properties and one jet parameter (pressure) was established. Although tests were conducted to specific pressures of 35, no minimum in the specific energy consumption was noted.

Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. Wilson M.Sc., M.I.M.M., F.S.A.I.M.M., M.A.I.M.E. and P. C. Graham M.Sc. (Eng.) Gold mining is being carried out at ever-increasing depths in South Africa. For reasons of safety and human comfort, it is becoming imperative for raises to be developed by means other than conventional drilling and blasting. Raise-boring is an attractive alternative method. Initial raise-boring experiences in South African gold mines showed disappointingly high costs due to the abrasivity and difficulty of drilling Witwatersrand quartzites. Consequently, a research and development project was instigated with the objective of making raise-boring an economically viable technique in hard abrasive rock. A Robbins 61R raise-borer was made available to the Research and Development team and a number of raises have been drilled. During these trials two advances in cutter design were tested. This paper presents the results obtained, including drilling costs, and provides details of the equipment used.

Anode vessels are often relined with refractory every one to two years and a typical reline time can take between 16-20 days. Modem refractory designs using dense, corrosion resistant brick applied directly to the vessel shell in the high wear areas around and above the tuyeres and at the slagline can yield a lining life of up to 4-5 years before a complete reline is necessary. Installation methods using brick delivery on roller conveyors through an endwall access port and complete anchoring of the brick to allow for lining self-support can take days off the installation time. It is possible, therefore, to reduce the refractory relining period by 50% and increase lining life by 100% compared to typical anode repair schemes. Cu2007

A series of batch flotation tests was performed on chalcopyrite-quartzite, on pyrrhotite-quartzite and on chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-quartzite mixtures. Pulp potential measurements in the flotation tests with single sulfide minerals indicated that each sulfide mineral had its own optimal potential range for flotation. When these results were used to select the potential ranges for the separation of the two minerals from their mixture, their flotation responses changed, and the selectivity of separation was adversely affected. A possible mechanism involving surface alteration through galvanic interaction is discussed, and a method to improve the selectivity of flotation separation is proposed.

EXPLANATIONS of the basic procedure for making earth-conductivity studies by the Eltran method have already appeared in several places.1,2,3 In its essentials, this method consists of applying step functions of voltage to one pair of earth grounds and measuring the transient potential resulting at a separate pair of ground points. As previously pointed out,4 the transient potential resulting from a suddenly applied steady voltage is the indicial transfer function of Carson,5 which has been extensively studied in network theory. [ ] The discussion here, with one special exception, will ignore the problem of how the physical configuration of the earth affects the transient response voltage; it appears that this phase of the problem has been solved in only a few special cases having any direct bearing on the prospecting problem. Entirely distinct from the potential theory aspect of the conductivity problem is the interesting material that can be had from studying the well-known network relations between cause and effect in linear circuits, and thus deducing criteria for the application of the several experimental methods available. To do this, only one assumption need be made about the nature of the earth. The earth is to be considered a linear conductor within the tolerance of ordinary measurements. The discussion will be restricted to collinear electrode configuration like that of Fig. I, since this is the only type of spread practical for use with driving currents that vary with time. Here one pair of grounds carries the driving current, and in line with these and external to them is a [ ] pair of potential probes. The problem will be to consider the relation between the different voltages appearing between the potential circuit terminals when various types of driving voltage sources are inserted in the current circuit. Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. Case studies are presented for a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided.The auditing process as described here for coal mines, and coal handling and preparation plants, is equally applicable to the processing of other mineral ores, metalliferous mines, quarries, and oil and gas projects.
