In accordance with provisions of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939, the Bureau of Mines surveyed the chromite occurrences in California. The Seiad Creek deposit afforded excellent opportunity for developing reserves that could be used by the nation in case of critical shortages of the mineral. Subsequently an exploration and development program was undertaken in April 1941, which was concluded in October of the same year. Work included road construction, diamond drilling, drifting and crosscutting, surface trenching, and sampling.

Structure is an important control in the localisation of gold mineralisation in epithermal systems. There has been, however, only limited investigation of the structural elements involved; such a study is currently directed at the gold deposits of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). Here, mineralised veining and brecciation ranges up to tens of metres in thickness. Dips of veins are mostly steep, but not vertical, and there is a significant number of low angle veins. The structural control of epithermal deposits may be considered on four scales. At the mega-tectonic scale, pre-volcanism fault patterns mostly relate to separation of the New Zealand micro-continent from Gondwana. The major structural controls on mineralisation at this scale, however, are associated with the volcanic arc processes responsible for the CVZ. Post-mineralisation faulting are linked to the Hauraki Rift and the Colville Ridge-Havre Trough system. Regional scale faults controlling the distribution of gold deposits are the product of these tectonic events; much of the faulting may relate to rifting and calderas, but further work is required to demonstrate this. Detailed study is also needed on vein systems at the prospect scale to validate models of brittle deformation responsible for such systems. Evidence that a variety of structural mechanisms dominated in different deposits is found at the vein scale, with Coromandel gold deposits being classified according to their different styles of vein-fill texture.

"During the previous decade, the role of spray-on liners within the mining industry was limited to providing a corrosion resistant coating to screen and bolts; however, increasingly, liners are being used as ground support products. Expanding use and testing of liners have demonstrated their ground support function, yet the definitive support mechanism is still under debate. The most promising theory is the retain/hold/reinforcement concept (Kaiser et al.,1992). This conceptual theory has been the basis for the recent underground trials at INCO where, specifically, shotcrete and MIROC Mineguard were tested in two trials to further define limitations and applications of each liner.In a cursory overview, shotcrete is becoming accepted as a support product, while Mineguard is only slowly gaining acceptance.This discrepancy is the result of the corresponding life-spans within the industry, whereby shotcrete has had wide-spread use for decades, yet Mineguard has only recently been introduced. Currently at INCO, shotcrete is primarily used: to provide support in poor ground conditions, to add stability when developing through backfill, and to provide damage control in seismically active mines. It is also used to protect production headings and secondary-blasting chambers from fly-rock damage during blasting. Despite an obvious support function of the liner, shotcrete has always been used in addition to bolts and screen. Comparatively, Mineguard is still in the testing stage, where the greatest potential is increased productivity for applications in multi-tasking development headings. In this scenario, Mineguard provides instant support to replace screen, and bolts temporarily. When the heading has advanced, the drill and support crews work in tandem, drilling off the next round and installing bolts for long-term radial support, respectively. Other potential applications of Mineguard are within production headings to replace screen in the back, and screen and bolts in walls. The potential for both liners to replace conventional support is clearly war-ranted, such that defining the support role was the primary goal of the two underground trials."

Water-cooled parts of submerged arc furnaces are potentially dangerous, especially if molten matte or slag contacts the water. Explosion hazards and metal run-outs generate high costs for production loss and repairs - not mentioning the possible loss of human life. This paper reports about practical results of wear measurement on intensive water-cooled tap-holes and spray-cooled side walls. On the one hand an embedding technology has been developed, that is used e.g. in water-cooled copper tap blocks or copper side wall coolers. Second the application of the sensor installation on the inner side of a water-cooled steel shell will be discussed. The fibre-optic sensor is fed through a specially arranged piping system and measures numerous temperatures over its entire length. By using the thermal conductivity of the installed refractory materials the lining thickness is calculated. The practical installation of the sensors will be discussed and the results of the wear measurement will be compared to the theoretical FEM calculations. The highly sensitive and accurate temperature measurement, as well as the recalculation of the impact of differences in the cooling water temperature, allows the exact determination of the remaining lining thickness. The discussed technologies offer efficient and safe monitoring of tap-holes, side walls and other endangered parts of pyro-metallurgical smelters.

The Ortiz Mountains lie 25 mi (40 km) northeast of Albuquerque, New Mexico in Santa Fe County (Figure 1). Approximately 350,000 ounces (11,000 kgs) of gold have been produced from the Ortiz Mountains since the 1820s. The 100 square mile (260 square km) Ortiz Mine Grant was secured from the Mexican government in 1833 by Jose Francisco Ortiz for the purpose of mining gold. The Grant has remained more or less intact to the present. The mineral rights are currently owned by Ortiz Mines, Inc. of Joplin, Missouri and are leased to LAC Minerals, USA, Inc. (west half) and to Gold Fields Mining Corporation (east half).

"Room-temperature tunable diode laser (TDL) analyzers are gaining in acceptance for highly critical safety monitoring applications in a variety of industries. This paper describes the testing, evaluation and deployment of a laser-based hydrogen cyanide monitoring system at the Campbell Complex of Goldcorp’s Red Lake Gold Mines in Balmertown, Ontario, Canada.A trial, single channel installation was followed by a staged multi-channel installation. Unexpected technical issues with the multi-channel installation were addressed and resolved.INTRODUCTIONLaser-based gas detection has several advantages over existing gas detection techniques (Ballangrud, 1993; Silver, 1992; Bomse, 1995; Table 1). For practical purposes, lasers generate light at a single wavelength. Room temperature tunable diode lasers (TDL) emit light in the near infrared (NIR) part of the electro-magnetic spectrum. Many gases of interest, including HCN, NH3 and others, absorb energy in the near infrared (NIR). Each gas has a unique absorption signature, or spectrum, made up of a large number of individual “absorption lines”. A TDL can be tuned to select a single absorption line of a target gas, which does not overlap with absorption lines from any other gases. Therefore, laser gas sensing is selective and does not suffer from interference from other gases. The single-wavelength nature of laser light also means that laser gas analysers have a linear response over a wide dynamic range.Tunable Diode Lasers (TDL) generate only a few mW of power. However, all this power is concentrated at one wavelength, the wavelength where gas absorption occurs, resulting in high signal-to-noise ratios and short response times, typically of about 1 or 2 seconds (Ballangrud, 1993). This also means that long path lengths can be used, enabling accurate measurements of very low concentrations, even with weakly absorbing gases. Tunable Diode Lasers provide all the advantages of other semiconductor devices: they are small, solid-state devices, operate at room temperature, and have long-term reliability (over 15 years). Currently, they can be obtained for any wavelength throughout the NIR (700nm to 2000nm). Because many gases absorb in the NIR, the technique is widely applicable."

Hoses provide a variety of critical functions in nearly every mining operation. Care must be taken when selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses to insure maximum hose life. This article provides some tips on selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses, and gives some background on hose construction and safety. In the mining industry, hoses are used for everything from hydraulic systems that power drills and hammers, to suction systems that carry away dust and debris. Hoses are used on such a large scale that a detailed discussion of specific applications would require many volumes. Dayco Corp. has, however, provided these basic and brief guidelines on how to select and maintain hoses for mining applications. Hose Construction Industrial hoses are classified as much by construction as they are by application. So, it is a good idea to start any discussion of hoses with a description of their basic construction. There are four basic components to hoses: the tube, reinforcement, cover, and couplings. The tube is the inner core or lining, and is usually made of smooth rubber or plastic. Rubber or plastic composition is scientifically determined to be compatible with the materials passing through it, such as fluids, chemicals, gases, or substances. Other considerations in compounding rubber or plastic for the tube are temperature ranges and stresses. In practice, the required compound can be precisely chosen from various charts listing them according to application. There are, however, applications where the compounding of tube rubber or plastic must be customized. The reinforcement hose layer immediately surrounds the tube. As its name implies, this layer gives the hose strength and provides protection for the tube component. Reinforcement must be able to contain the inner forces-pressure and shock-transmitted through the tube, and such external forces as twisting, bending, and crushing. So it is usually made of high tensile strength cord, fabric, or wire that is wrapped, wound, or braided around the tube. The cover is the outermost layer, so it may encounter oils, acids, water, dust, abrasion, and other potentially damaging influences depending, of course, on the application. An appropriate cover material must be selected, usually a rubber compound. Couplings, even though they are a hose attachment, are as vital as any other component and should be considered part of the hose. Couplings are usually made of carbon steel or malleable iron; however, bronze or stainless steel might be used if corrosive chemicals are involved and brass or aluminum might be used for flammable fluids. A coupling is usually in two parts: an insert that fits into the hose bore and contains the threaded male, female, or other type of connection, and the ferrule or collar that fits over the hose and secures the coupling in place. There are, however, some one-part couplings that fit securely into the hose without a ferrule. These are usually limited to low pressure applications and are secured to the hose by clamps or metal bands. Some fittings can also be permanently "built-in" as the hose is made. Couplings can be classified as reusable or permanent. The reusables can be removed when the old hose expires and used again on a new hose. The permanent types are crimped or swaged on at the factory or in the field (using special equipment) and must be discarded with the hose. Although couplings are most commonly thought of as having threaded fittings, there is another type called "quick connect." In the past decade Australia has seen the development, construction and commissioning of three complex processing plants for the treatment of lateritic nickel ores. These have all been based on high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) for extraction of nickel and cobalt into solution, followed by solid liquid separation in a CCD circuit. However, flowsheets for separation and purification of the nickel and cobalt diverge markedly. The existing plants have been commissioned with varying degrees of success, with a variety of problems ranging from materials of construction to inadequate design. While the process problems are not insurmountable, there is much room for improvement. Currently there are several new HPAL plants at the feasibility or financing stage. All of these have adopted one of the existing flowsheets. Most of the enhancements have focused on increasing autoclave size. It is now time to assess the success and failures of the three existing plants and incorporate this experience in a design for productivity, efficiency and reliability. Towards this end, this paper discusses aspects of flowsheet optimization, materials of construction and engineering design.

Cold drawing of copper wire rod is usually combined with an in-line annealing process to adjust the ductile microstructure of the wire again. One important key factor for successful annealing is the quality of the copper itself. Rod producers can check the recrystallization behaviour of the rod by different methods: chemical analysis, Spiral Elongation Test (SEN) as well as the Rapid Elongation Test (AR) are some examples of common testing methods. The comparison of the results of these methods does not always show sufficient correlations. The paper introduces firstly the SEN and AR-Tests and their different approaches to the mentioned task. The second step is to compare some results of the SEN-Test with the results of the AR-Test and identify causes of deviations. Thirdly, the effect of pre-annealing is discussed, which is especially common for wire rod with diameters of more than 8 mm.

Material and energy balances for stockpiled lignite were calculated by computer simulation techniques to determine the occurrence of spontaneous heating. Data on properties of lignite which affect spontaneous heating were required. In some cases, best values from reported data were utilized; in other cases, new data were developed. These include specific studies on the rate and conditions that influence oxidation, heat of oxidation, heat of wetting, specific heat, thermal conductivity, and permeability of stockpiles to air. These data are presented and discussed in detail for possible application to other studies. Results of computer simulations confirm past field experience on the storage of lignite containing as-mined moisture, and predict a greater risk of heat occurrence in stockpiles of dried lignite where experience is lacking. Successful storage was predicted for dried lignite of 20 pct moisture content, if it were cooled after drying and compacted to an interparticle void fraction of 9 pct (bulk density of 67 lb/cu ft) compared to 10 pet void fraction (72 lb/cu ft) for as-mined lignite.

Conversion of Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves requires a multidisciplinary approach and application of a number of Modifying Factors. The Modifying Factors for mining, particularly dilution and recovery in a caving mine are complex and can be difficult to determine. Cave flow modelling software is widely used for mine planning, scheduling and forecasting metal production. However, the conversion of Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves remains a difficult and subjective process and a consistent approach to convert Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves as part of the cave flow modelling process is not published in the literature. This is due to the difficulty in estimating the Ore Reserve that remains as cave stocks at a particular point in the mine schedule, the recovered tonnage and grade of the diluting material at various stages in the mine life, as well as the Mineral Resource classification of both the recovered and diluting material that forms the Ore Reserve. The key principle of this paper is the tracking of the Mineral Resource classification in the flow model used to estimate the Ore Reserves. This is critical to defining the Ore Reserve as Proved or Probable and enabling transparency in the reporting process. An approach for dealing with mineralised external dilution in the Ore Reserve estimation process is also provided.This paper outlines the approach to convert Mineral Resources into Ore Reserves developed at the Ernest Henry mine sublevel cave (EHM SLC). The same method could be used in any cave mine and applied at any stage of the mine life. The process replaces broad-brush assumptions for the mining Modifying Factors, such as dilution and recovery, as these are determined numerically as part of the model computation. This paper explains the Ore Reserve estimation method with a worked example to enable the reader to adopt the process at any caving mine. Mineral Resource classification within the block model is embedded in the cave flow model and the flow model results used to attribute tonnes, grade and the mixed proportions of the Mineral Resource classification for material extracted from each drawpoint. This information is then used to convert planned mine production into the appropriate Ore Reserve classification. Since the flow model simulation follows the mine schedule, it can be used to predict depletion and cave stocks at any stage of the mine life, and can calculate a residual block model at the end of the mine life. The accuracy of the flow model is checked by validating the forecast ore grade and metal tonne with reconciliation data from the concentrator which is also used to calibrate the flow model.CITATION:Campbell, A D, 2017. This Bureau of Mines report describes in detail the design and operation of a test apparatus for measuring the sound power levels of drills used by the mining industry. The two major components of the test apparatus are a computer-controlled automated drill test fixture (ADTF) and a large (45,000-ft3) reverberation chamber that houses the ADTF. Design specifications and performance capabilities of the ADTF and the reverberation room are given. Initial test results for three types of drills--a pneumatic percussion drill, a hydraulic percussion drill, and a pneumatic rotary drill--are given to illustrate the types of experiments that can be conducted with the test appartus.

The industry of producing and processing boron compounds is called the borax industry because the chief product is borax, the decahydrate of disodium tetraborate. For the same reason, it is common to speak of borax mining. Reference to borate mining also is common, and while appropriate where it emphasizes the diversity of borate minerals that are mined in various countries, it is rather unsatisfactory where used in a general sense, because it seems to exclude the important production of borax from brine at Searles Lake, California, and of boric acid from steam vents in Tuscany, Italy. The terms "boron industry" and "boron mining" might seem more comprehensive, but are little used, and this is fortunate because they would be misleading-the element boron is manufactured only in small amounts for special uses, and it is not found free in nature. In most occurrences, boron is combined with oxygen and is in a borate or borosilicate material. The history of the modem borax industry starts with the introduction into Europe of borax from Tibet in the 13th century, about the time of Marco Polo, if not actually by him. The discovery that borax has unique value as a flux in metal soldering and ceramic glazing must have been made at some unknown time much earlier. As a rule, any mineral that has been used so long that its early history is lost must occur in deposits that are easily recognized and worked, and this is undoubtedly true of borax in Tibet. According to meager accounts,9 the borax occurs there in arid mountain basins as surficial crusts that coat the ground about thermal springs and seeps of mineralized water, and as coarser crystals in the bottom muds of shallow pools and lakes. Much the same essential features of surface exposures and minerals easy to recognize and recover characterize most of the deposits later found and worked elsewhere. The borax industry at the present time is faced with rising demands for its products, and consequently is increasing its productive capacity and appraising its borate resources.18 The areas that contain the known borate deposits are most likely to yield additional production, hence their distribution in the world is of interest, and is summarized later in this chapter. Mineralogy The mineral raw materials used by the borax industry include various borates mined in several countries, borax extracted from brines at Searles Lake in California, and boric acid extracted from the steam of vents in Tuscany in Italy. The hydrated borates[$] of chief commercial importance are listed in Table 1, which also shows their chemical composition. The properties of only the four most important borates are summarized here, but detailed descriptions of the borates and the minerals commonly found with them can be found in mineralogy textbooks.41 Ulexite generally forms clusters of silky fibers rather than large individual crystals. Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, a O2- , and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of a O2- , which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. The patterns of iso-optical basicity lines in ternary systems are shown to agree well with the pattern of iso-activity and iso-capacity lines under appropriate conditions. * Originally published in the Proceedings of MINPREX 2000, published by The AusIMM.

MODELLING FOR DESIGN AND CONTROL AT KALGOORLIE NICKEL SMELTER Modelling at KNS has been driven by a need to have better tools to answer questions about control, design and optimisation of the plant. This paper describes a number of modelling tools developed for use at KNS and how the development of modelling tools fits with a design and control strategy. In the area of control, a thermodynamic model has been developed to allow process parameters to be calculated. The model allows for the automatic selection of data from a laboratory data base, desired operating set points are input and the operating parameters are calculated. The model has the ability to adjust the burner efficiency and the furnace heat loss depending upon conditions. To assist with the testing of proposed furnace design changes, various mathematical models of the burner and shaft have been created using PHOENICS. These models are particularly well suited to combustion heat transfer and flow aspects of both the burners and shaft. Validation of these models have been based on novel sampling and measuring techniques in the shaft and also by using scale and cold models. Overall plant energy and cost structures can be analysed using a flowsheet simulation, developed to evaluate potential alterations to the plant flowsheet. This model system allows the global evaluation of process changes.

INTRODUCTION At the end of 1959, high levels of radioactivity attributed to radon and its daughter products were discovered in the fluorspar mines at St. Lawrence, Newfoundland. These levels were presumed to be the cause of an unusually high incidence of lung cancer among the fluorspar miners (deVilliers & Windish, 1964) (Parsons et al. 1964). The mining of fluorspar (calcium fluoride) began in 1933 as open pit operations but converted to standard underground mining procedures in 1936. During the second world war, production was greatly expanded as a result of increased demand for fluorspar used in the production of steel. Wet drilling was first introduced into general use in 1942. Ventilation was mainly by natural draft occasionally supplemented by small blowers. The amount of ventilation varied greatly between mines as well as over time. For example, one large mine, the Iron Springs mine, had only a single small raise to the surface some 600' from the central shaft. Other mines, such as the Director mine, had a number of raises to the surface and, as a result, had far better ventilation. Mines also varied by the amount of ground-water which seeped into them. In the early 1950's, an unusually large number of lung cancer cases were diagnosed among the fluorspar miners. As a result, in 1956 and 1957, J.P. Windish of Canada's Department of Health and Welfare tested for possible causative agents in the mines. Unfortunately, radon measurements were not conducted until 1959 and 1960 when Windish tested Director mine as did the A.D. Little company in 1960. As a result of the high radon levels found, mechanical ventilation was introduced and the concentration of radon dauthers fell, on the average to well below 1 WL. During this period, lung cancer cases continued to be diagnosed with 29 lung cancer deaths recorded by 1964 and 71 by 1971. As of July 1981, 105 lung cancer cases had been identified (Hollywood, 1981). Previous reports concerning the fluorspar miners have dealt in detail with the factors in the occupational environment and discussed occupational mortality patterns. The purpose of this paper is to review further the mortality experience with particular reference to lung cancer in relation to cumulated radiation exposure and to describe briefly our ongoing study of this group. METHODS Occupational histories were prepared for men who had been employed by the mining companies at St. Lawrence during the period 1933 to 1977. The histories were compiled from company records except for the period 1933 to 1936, records for which were lost in a fire; however, the occupational histories for this period were completed by searching census records and interviewing company officials, ex-employees and others. In addition, occupational and smoking histories were also obtained for some miners during a survey conducted in 1978. Occupational records included name and date of birth as well as the type, place and hours of work by year. For each year prior to 1960, hours of work were converted to working months (1 WM = 167 hours) and were multiplied by the estimated average radon daughter concentration in working levels (WL) to yield the annual radiation exposure in working level months (WLM). Pre-1960 radiation levels were estimated on the basis of the history of mining methods employed, ventilation history of the mine, type and place of work and conditions under which the first radiation measurements were made in 1959 and 1960 (deVilliers and Windish, 1964). During the period from 1960 to 1967, the average exposure was about 0.5 WL. Beginning in 1968, radiation levels were measured more frequently, and, beginning in 1969, daily exposures for each worker were recorded based on radiation levels in the place worked on a given day. Mortality data were obtained from medical certificates of death. In a small number of cases, medically certified death certificates were unavailable. In these cases, probable cause of death were obtained from forms completed by the local clergyman (returns of death), parish records, information obtained from interviews with family members of the deceased and/or hospital information, before assigning a cause of death. Data obtained from these sources were found in Tables 1, 2 and 4, cover the time period 1933 to 1971. Data in Table 3 as well as in Figures 1 through 3 cover deaths from 1933 to 1977, and includes only those miners for whom medical certificates of death were available. Two medically certified causes of death were changed from other causes to lung cancer on the basis of pathology reports.
